EASTON, Windenburg (SNN) - - The Windenburg royal household published its financial report for the year 2022-2023, giving a glimpse of how the monarch and the working members of her family get from A to B and how much it all costs.
In total, over the last financial year the royals spent §4.5 million simoleons on travel, including the official tours undertaken by George I, Queen consort Rowena, (then) Princess Katherine, and Prince Louis, as well as some minor working royals.
But how do the Windenburg royals travel, and what methods do they have at their disposal? SNN has the answers.
Helicopters

One of the main methods of domestic travel for the queen and the working members of her family is by helicopter.
The queen currently relies on one main helicopter at her disposal, The Queen's Helicopter Flight (TQHF), which is painted in a deep blue color with royal cyphers on each side. The craft is a model EC155 from Americreek manufacturer LorySims and has been in use by the royals since 2009.
Though helicopters are capable of landing in the gardens of Buckingsim Palace, the main central Easton landing hub for members of the royal family is at Kently Estate in a large field at the northern end of the complex.
The 2022-2023 royal household financial statement revealed that over 179 journeys were made via helicopters by the working royals throughout the year.
As the expense for this is paid from the allocation of funds the queen receives from the government to pay for her official duties, she retains the right to approve each use of her aircraft by family members.
Private Jets
In the same way that the queen has the use of helicopters to help her travel quickly and safely within the U.K. for short haul flights, she also has access to private jets both for her personal use, as well as for the use of working members of her family and government officials.
RAF Voyager

In the 2022-2023 financial year the royals undertook a number of foreign tours. The queen and other members of her family are regularly asked by the Foreign Office to undertake international visits, in promoting Windenburg assets around the globe.
For their journey, the royals travel aboard RAF Voyager, the U.K government's VIP jet. While it maintains a military function as a mid-air refueling craft, it's also used to transport high-ranking government officials and members of the royal family. The Duke and Duchess of Kent used it the most as they undertook the most international visits on behalf of the Crown during the year.
RAF Voyager is maintained and manned by the Royal Air Force, which oversees all of the royals' air travel.
The Royal Train

The Royal Train comprises a dedicated set of claret liveried sleeper, dining and lounge carriages reserved for the use of senior members of the royal family when traveling around Windenburg. There has been a royal train since the reign of Edward I and the current one was presented to King George I in 1994, though it has had its interiors updated in the years since.
Total expenditure on the royal train, including operating lease payments, for 2021-2022 was §1 million simoleons.
Royal Yacht

The royal yacht of the Windenburg monarchy, also known as The Royal Yacht Windenburgia, has been in service since 1978. It is the second royal yacht to bear the name, the first being the racing cutter built for the Prince of Brindleton Bay in 1813. The yacht travels more than five-hundred thousand nautical miles around the sims world to more than 120 ports in 16 countries.

As well as helicopters, planes and trains, the royals also have a fleet of luxury motor cars that are used for official events such as the State Opening of Parliament, as well as regular engagements around the United Kingdom of Windenburg.
The Rolls Royce State Limousines are official state cars manufactured by Rolls Royce as a gift for the late King George I on the occasion of his Silver Jubilee in 2017. The two cars produced, in navy and black, were in service for the King up until his death in 2023. They have most recently been in service for Queen Katherine I. The Queen Mother (then Queen consort) used the car while accompanying the King's coffin. Both cars are kept in the Royal Mews.
In 2022-2023, the official expenditure on motor vehicle journeys undertaken by the queen and senior royals was §200,000.

I have this delusion that if I can make real life Doc Ock arms she'll become real and love me. So I'm gonna try and do that before I get bored and it becomes another discarded folder of CAD on my desktop.
I'm going to use electromagnets to do it, because that's one of the only ways I could think of trying to replicate the soft robotic arms from Spiderverse. (I know that's not how actual soft robotics work, but I just have a 3d printer so I'm working with what I've got) I'm starting off with a proof of concept, basically just taking an electromagnet, putting it at one end of a shell with some metal on the other end and seeing if I can compress and extend it.

I made an electromagnet calculator to get the dimensions and power requirements needed for the force I want. I originally wanted to get 100N at 75mm gap between top and bottom but that would either require a way beefier power supply or really large coils, so I reduced my expectations. I have some DC motor drivers ordered to actually run the coils and I have a old laptop power supply combined with a buck converter to drop the voltage to the correct level.

For the physical design I went with two half circles intersecting, this was to hopefully make it bend near the middle instead of the ends. I've run some basic FEA on it, but I don't have the material properties for TPU so it mostly just helped to beef up the areas near the threads to prevent them from buckling rather than getting a good simulation of how it will fold. Once I get the magnets working I'll play around with some more exotic shapes to see what works the best. I might even try adjusting the wall thickness through the height.
I just realized that I need to actually find a way to secure the spools to the little caps because right now they're just indexed with the nubs. I thought about super gluing them but I do want to be able to retrieve them at some point for use in future versions.
To actually test them I'm going to hook them up to an Arduino Nano or something with the motor drivers. To actually test how much force they're outputting I though about using a kitchen scale and seeing that way. Another though was to just get a 2kg weight and put it on it. That way if it can lift that up it fulfills the requirements I set up (20N at 75mm gap between magnet and metal). I've also though about making some sort of jig with a load cell. It would let me get more precise data but means I spend time designing and manufacturing more testing infrastructure rather than the actual project.

If I am going to be making more coils, then I might need to think about making a jig or machine for winding them. My calcs say I need coils with a couple hundred turns at least, so making a simple machine to turn them for me would save a lot of time if I want to make a lot of nodules. The main issues I see are getting
If the tests works then I'll move onto a version with four sets of magnets so I can bend the nodule (I'm calling them nodules) in any direction. I'd also like to get some PCBs for controlling them, that way I can connect them up to each other a main hub through I2C or something and collect data like temp. I also have to think about power dissipation because they could sink a good number of Watts, so if I do something funky, like have cut outs for airflow in the PCBs, then have fan at the end of the limb to push air through it could solve that. This is all way in the future though. I need to wait for all the stuff to come in and actually test it.

Iota Magazine: Mis Arnott, your association with motor racing is unique. This season Arnott cars have raced frequently, and your activities have extended beyond manufacture to servicing and to team management. Did you intend to go into production when you built your first 500, or was that just an expression of your inherent interest in racing? Daphne Arnott: George Thornton and I made the prototype for fun. One day at Brands Hatch Bob Brown of Bromley saw the car and fell in love with it. He drove the car to win its first race, and then, encouraged by his enthusiasm we decided to manufacture some more. Bob Brown has been our main supporter through many trials, for which we are very grateful. Iota: We referred to your inherent interest in motor racing. Did your early association with racing through your father's activities first arouse your enthusiasm? Arnott: Yes. I come from a long line of engineers dating back to my great grandfather, who was Captain and Secretary of the Bath Road Club. He was also in control of Werner Motor Cycles, who were the originators of the vertical twin. My father is designer of the Arnott supercharger and markets them through his company, Carburettors, Ltd. Iota: But when did you become interested enough in racing to want to take some active part in it? Arnott: In my early days at Brooklands and then as a spectator at Brands Hatch during 1951, when two makes of cars predominated, and it seemed to me there was room for another. Iota: Did you do all the design work on the Arnott yourself? Arnott: No. It was the combined effort of George Thornton and myself. Iota: What have you learned from this season's racing? Arnott: Enough to write a book, but primarily to stick to one's own decisions and not be sidetracked by well-meaning helpers.

Iota: Why did you choose torsion bar suspension for the Arnott 500? Arnott: For Formula III cars I believe it is the suspension of the future. Iota: We hear you are going to use Albion gearboxes in the 1953 cars. Why is this? Arnott: Because the Albion has proved to be the most reliable in every way and it has the best selection of ration to offer. In our prototype car the Albion completed 2,000 hard racing miles without trouble. Iota: What other new features are to be incorporated in next season's car? Arnott: Recent trials have proved to us that the design we have settled on is fast, devoid of roll and virtually unspinnable. There will only be minor modifications - including considerably lighter road wheels. Iota: Do you make these wheels yourself? Arnott: Yes. We machine the entire wheel at our Edgware works and the weight of our newest front wheel is only 10 lb., including hub and races. Iota: In view of your father's long experience, have you any special carburation modifications in view? Arnott: Next season we shall be using a special Arnott carburretor, but I cannot give you any details of that just yet. Iota: What are your views on swing-axle rear suspension? Arnott: Although I think the swing axle system has much to recommend it - it is light and simple - I believe that durability is the important factor in the long run. The main criticism I have against swing axles is the extreme stresses thrown on the driving shafts which tend to fracture at the hub ends. I base my opinion on this season's record, when wheels have been lost on swing-axle cars on numerous occasions, luckily with no fatality to drivers, but there have been very awkward moments for spectators and for other competitors. Iota: Did you find that the long-chassis car was superior to the short-chassis prototype? Arnott: It all depends on the driver's preference. The short chassis prototype does not drift. The longer chassis does. Iota: How many cars have you produced? Arnott: Six cars last season. Our intended production rate was hampered by various modifications incorporated during the year - inevitable with a new design. Iota: What are your future production plans? Arnott: During this winter we intend to build twenty new cars for delivery early in February. Iota: Have you done any competition driving? Arnott: No. To date I have had little time for competition driving. Iota: Do you intend to drive an Arnott in competition? Arnott: Yes but I am one of the few females who agree with men about "Women drivers." A great deal of unwarranted publicity surrounds a woman racing driver, and whether or not she can drive seems unimportant. When I feel I am competent enough to enter a race I will, but I shall be heavily disguised as a man. Iota: Are you running a "works" team next year? Arnott: Yes, but we have not decided how it will be done. Iota: Do you intend to continue indefinitely with a "works" team or will you confine your racing to one "works" entry when your cars have stronger numerical representation? Arnott: We have never run a "works" team, I should like to make that clear. One of the cars in the team has always belonged to me and I will continue to race one car next year. If a team proves to be a commercial proposition for all participants, then I shall certainly continue with it. Iota: It is apparent from your answers that you are a business woman, an engineer and a 500 c.c. motor racing enthusiast. You combine these activities very successfully, but do you find it an advantage or otherwise in being a woman in such [a] competitive sphere? Arnott: It took some time to convince people that a woman could take motor racing seriously.

Other cars built by Arnott in its seven years as a constructor included a supercharged Austin A30-powered sportscar, a streamliner for record-breaking attempts, and a GT car, although a variety of other cars were also made.                                                          While Arnott did not blow away the field in races, they did manage to break nine International Class I records at Montlhery in October 1953. John Brise, father of Formula 1 driver Tony Brise, piloted the 500cc streamliner – based on the standard 500cc chassis but with beautifully sculpted bodywork – to a fastest lap of 122mph, and set new records for 50km, 50 miles, 100km, 100 miles, 200km, 200 miles, 500km, 1 hour, and 3 hours. In 1955, Daphne Arnott took an eight-person team to the ill-fated 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race. Their 1,100cc Coventry-Climax powered car suffered an accident in practice, and so the team did not start the race. Only two of the eight drivers had completed any running at the time of the accident, and Arnott was not one of them.
Arnott was more slightly successful at the 1957 Le Mans event, when the team ran a Cooper-Climax powered version of their GT car – the team did not finish the race, thanks to a dropped valve, but they were able to start it. It would be Arnott’s last attempt at the legendary endurance event, and the failure led to the end of the marque.

1939 Gillet Herstal 720 AB | Belgium 🇧🇪
In 1919, the Ateliers Gillet, S.A. motorcycle factory appeared in Liège, Belgium. Ateliers Gillet's first motorcycles were hard to distinguish from the competition, but soon it became one of Belgium's three largest motorcycle manufacturers, along with such well-known companies as Saroléa and Fabrique Nationale de Herstal. Of course, like other market leaders, Ateliers Gillet, S.A. supplied two-wheelers to the Belgian army.
The crisis of the late 1920's and early 30's had a significant impact on the Belgian economy and the country was not prepared for a new world war. The last funds were thrown into the development of military production. Despite the Belgian King Leopold III declared neutrality, he still feared a surprise attack by Nazis. Mindful of the lightning-fast motorized German army, the Belgians immediately began replenishing the ranks of military motorcycles for their country's needs.
When the requirements for a new military two-wheelers were made before the outbreak of World War II, Ateliers Gillet, S.A. was the first company to supply the army. Belgian engineers from Ateliers Gillet, S.A., who had vast experience with two-stroke engines, came up with their own design – the Gillet Herstal 720 AB.
The motorcycle is proudly called as the Golden Age model with the biggest 2-stroke motor. Well, does not 728 ccm engine sounds serious? The crankshaft has two cranks, turned 180° to each other. The motorcycle has a 4-speed gearbox with an additional reverse gear. The rear wheel is driven by a chain, and from the rear wheel hub to the sidecar wheel comes a shaft located inside the rear tube of the sidecar frame.
Already in 1940, due to the occupation of Belgium by Germany, production of the 720 AB model was stopped. All new-produced motorcycles were mobilized to the Wehrmacht with the corresponding instructions for operation and maintenance.
