I have no where to mention this in fic but Y/N's nickname "Omi" is short for Omelette. Sort of how as a kid I loved eating bananas so they called me Monkey lol. Just my OC's name, but I want people to read this as their own character 🤷.

You were a young wolf mink living on the island of Zou. As a wolf, you served under Nekomamushi thus awoke by night, training to keep your country safe as part of your customary training. Unfortunately among the mink tribe you weren’t quite perfect. For one, your electro simply did not live up to expectations despite it coming naturally to most. Secondly, your combat skills were better than standard for your age, but your kind nature made it difficult to fight real opponents; your punches and kicks would stop short of landing. Thirdly, you were one of few piebald minks to have lived and the only piebald wolf mink… The younger mink around you made fun of you for your selfless nature and for your beautiful coloration, insisting you were weak and unnatural. If you can’t hit us, how can we trust you to hit an intruder?! You were failing Zunesha! You weren’t the protector Zou required each citizen to be.

In private the bullying would only worsen. They would assault you when you were playing with them alone. Without adults around it was easy for them to take advantage of your kindness. You made it home often with your hair in tatters, your fur ragged, your paws and face caked in blood & dirt. Your parents would question you: your mother – excessively worried – helping you clean up, but your father was enraged. Your father often yelled at you, scolding you for not having fought back or suggesting you simply never go out again. He increase your anxiety, causing you to shut down and sob in a ball, insisting he’d go out and make the adults of those children pay despite your protesting. The embarrassment would burn in your cheeks, the thought anyone would get hurt and it was your fault augmented your already fragile adolescent self esteem.

It was often that you found yourself at the center of Zou’s Whale Forest under the Whale Tree. You liked to sit along the whale’s underbelly and – using your excellent night vision – you would read a book. You did this to escape home and escape your “friends”. Despite your struggles, Zou truly was one of the safest islands on the Grand Line. Other than the looming threat of your classmates following you, you found this spot to be a sanctuary. The Whale Tree had spurred you to begin researching baleen whales, igniting your fascination with sea life. The books you typically read contained tales about lesser minks that inhabited most of the planet—however vast that was. It enthralled you to learn about pirates who traveled the stormy seas surrounding Zunesha. Most importantly, the topic that piqued your curiosity most were the sea kings.

You dreamt of diving deep into the sea and making new discoveries. I want to know how sea kings tick, you told yourself. Do they eat? Do they impact the diversity of the oceans positively or negatively? Why were so many of them in the calm belt? Which was the biggest?! Your mind swirled with these thoughts day after day until the fateful moment your dreams were shattered.

On the trek home one night you found yourself confronting a familiar group if mink kits. The leader of the group, a jaguar mink named Pedro, held up an odd looking item as he spat insults at you. Frozen in fear and taken by the sight of said object, you momentarily lose your sense of time. The item was some sort of melon—or was it a brain? It was a pale grey color, the little green stem at the top curled into a crescent. It took your lagging mind a few moments to absorb what you were looking at – what you were hearing, too – before the jaguar kit commanded the other hoodlums to tackle you to the ground.

Overpowered by the combined strength of several older mink kits, you scream and struggle to break free only to have your jaws forced open. Pedro walked over and shoved the fruit into your mouth. Angered - released from their grip temporarily - you bite down and destroy the fruit, scattering pieces everywhere, but – most importantly – you ended up swallowing some of it. You spat and coughed, not expecting the fruit to taste like mold. Suddenly, the world looked larger to you. Something was wrong.

While distracted the primate mink named Keith ran at you with a big bucket of water. The others once again grabbed you, essentially allowing the monkey kit to water board you. Not only did you feel like you were drowning, but you felt the energy drain from your body. Your vision began to blur, blood rushing in your ears deafening sound; your body tried to find some way to expel the water in order to breathe. Spots formed in your eyes, unconsciousness threatening to overtake you.

“Enough!” a gruff voice barely broke through your minds haze. An adult mink’s heavy body rushed towards the clearing thru the underbrush. The kits panicked and scattered, leaving the back of your head to hit the floor with a sharp clatter. Water pooled on the ground around your head as you weakly gargled. “Are you alright?!” A massive polar bear mink knelt beside you. He had a black tuft of hair at the top of his head and a black beard, but the rest of his visible fur was snow white. He placed his two paws just under your diaphragm, administering CPR to encourage your lungs to fully clear out. Once he was confident you had had spat all of the water out, he helped you sit up. The bear’s voice came clear now, “You’ve eaten a devil fruit.”

A devil what now? Oh, a devil fruit. You had read about them, but had never seen one in person before. You looked down at your legs and hands, your lungs still heaving as you tried to regain your composure. You had the same pigmentation as your fur, but said fur was gone. Your hair, however, remained. The spotted separations between your skin patches were much more prominent, you saw spots you’d never noticed before. Your wolf claws had become flat like a primates. Holding your head in your new hands, you scream.

The bear mink watched you panic at first, then placed his hands on your shoulders. He guided you through deep breathing exercises to stop your hyperventilating. When you had calmed enough, he finally introduced himself. “My name is Grepo, one of the Guardians. I know your father, but I don’t think I’ve ever met you in person, Y/N. Can you talk to me?” Using a cloth, Grepo had gone on to pat you down. The less water on your skin, the more aware you felt, the easier it was to calm your nerves. You managed to stand on your own two paws, luckily those still resembled proper wolf minks paws and had fur. You check the paw pad, they were still there, but shaped to fit a human-like sole.

“What… am I?” You weren’t sure if the question was for Grepo or yourself. You reach up atop your head and find fluffy wolf ears where they belong. Behind you, your tail still twitched from stress.

Grepo thoughtfully tilted his head, “You look like a lesser mink.” Seeing your big eyes look up at him, almost desperate, he became quickly depressed. “Oh, I’m sorry. It felt rude calling you lesser…” he recovered almost instantly, “But you know it means fine-furred, right? You look like an ape mink to be precise.”

Tears welled up in your eyes, you hug yourself, feeling your now bare and smooth arms with cold hands. At a mere 7 years of age you wanted to die. Now you really were a monster. Besides, the other kits would definitely kill you now. Worst of all, the one thing you knew about Devil Fruits was… you couldn’t swim anymore. For just a moment you wonder if they were trying to poison you or they were trying to take away your dreams. You felt your heart skip, your chest felt as though it was full of tar, your head hurt from the abuse you’d just suffered. You fell to your knees, resting your forehead against the dirt. Bear mink paws pat your back gently, petting you soothingly. As you didn’t move, sobbing uncontrollably, Grepo lifts you and gently cradles you against his chest.

“My son, Zepo, sees you during class,” Grepo said softly. “He’s upset with how the others treat you, I didn’t know it was so extreme. I’m glad I was patrolling near by and heard the commotion. Would you like to visit my family? We could get you some new clothes as yours are too damp and dirty now. A warm bath and a meal should help…” Face buried in Grepo’s soft neck fur, back suddenly feeling very cold anywhere his hands weren’t touching, you meekly nod.

With your response, the Whale Forest Guardian walks in the direction he had come from, using the path of flattened underbrush instead of trampling more plants. Luckily the clearing he had been in hadn’t been too far. The walk to Grepo’s home was calming, the bear mink trying his best not to rock you too mucj. The sun was slowly rising over the horizon. 6 AM was right around the corner, prompting everyone under Nekomamushi’s ruling to grow sleepier as the minutes ticked by.

The sound of a baby mewling woke you that night. It was 6 PM again, the Guardian Residential District began to buzz with activity. You stare at the ceiling, a breeze passing by your face. You tremble and bring the blankets up to your chin- your smooth skinned chin. You experimentally pinch your own cheek. It seemed lesser mink had a very thin outline of hair; so light they can barely be seen. It felt pleasant on your fingertips. You liked the sensations, you realized your sense of touch was stronger, too. The weirdest aspect was your flat face, much different than your snout- much flatter than any primate mink you’ve ever encountered.

Glancing around the room you spot a bed with a polar bear kit sleeping in it. It was Zepo, you recognized him from school. He was all white besides a black spot of fur on his chin and a black stripe on his head. Beyond his bed you spot a cradle, a much smaller, pure white bear kit gripped the bars, crying for attention. Zepo had started to stir in his sleep like you, then sits up and yawns. He gets out of the bed – wearing a set of green pajamas – and walks over to the cradle. He isn’t quite tall enough to get the baby out, but the baby is smiling and reaching for his brother. Zepo gently plays with his baby brother’s paws. “Good morning, Bepo,” his sing-song voice made you smile.

“Oh,” Zepo turned to see you staring. “Good evening, Y/N,” he yawns again loudly into his hand. “I had to get ready for bed so I didn’t ask my father what happened. He did tell me you ate a devil fruit, though. Are you okay? How does it feel?” You glance under your covers, noticing you were given one of Zepo’s pajama sets to wear after a much needed bath. It was a little baggy, but it hadn’t hindered your sleep. The straps to make sure your pants didn’t fall off had already been adjusted for you. You stand and immediately miss the plush mattress, but resist the urge to climb back in, turning your attention back to Zepo.

“Wow,” Zepo walked over. He was staring at your arms, your legs. “I’ve never seen a lesser mink in person before.” He reaches out to give you a big hug. You smile and hug him back.

“Garchu!” You both greet, rubbing into each others faces affectionately as all minks did. He was warm, you were instantly much happier. He was about double your size, considering he was a bear kit. His dressed chest and belly felt so plush even with fabric in front of it. This brought memories to you; sometimes the kits at the school would refuse to minkship with you, assuming your piebaldism was somehow spreadable. Zepo clearly knew better; it was rare you made such a good friend your age.

“You feel nice!” Zepo mused. “Very smooth but still soft.” You giggle as he explores your skin, grazing your ticklish spots unintentionally. He leaned down and rubbed his face into yours again. You push him away when you’d had enough, blushing brightly but still beaming. He grins his toothy grin in return, then gently takes your hand to guides you over to his brother, Bepo. “Hey, baby brother,” Zepo touched the paws the restless kit had wrapped firmly on the bars. “This is my classmate, (Y/N).” Bepo smiles brightly at you. Your heart melts. Soft… incredibly so. Bear kits were always some of the cutest kits, even if they were huge and would only get bigger. The bars of the crib were extra tall and woven tight and strong, sure not to get torn by the bite force of a bear kit. Zepo tore his eyes away from his adorable baby brother and looked at you, “So, are you ready to wash up and eat breakfast? I need to tell my mother Bepo’s awake.”

“Yes, of course,” you respond. Zepo lead you to the laboratory to wash up. He affectionately nuzzles you, then heads out to find his mother. You felt nervous being alone, but you bore it, finishing up quickly to meet Zepo back in his bedroom. As you pass the kitchen on the way back, you notice a newspaper on the table. Chills run down your spine as you realize it was news about the outside world! The largest article on the front cover was about the destruction of an island called Ohara. The report declared that the people of Ohara were researching forbidden knowledge that could have destroyed the world; it painted the marines as the heroes. An image of a young girl’s bounty crossed your vision as you skimmed. Nico Robin, a girl no older than you had earned a bounty of 79 million berries. If a lesser mink of only 9 years old could sink five marine ships… civilization outside of Zou was far more grandiose than you could have ever imagined.

“Good evening, Omi!” Your head snaps to attention at the sound of the nickname your father gave you, looking up to meet Grepo’s eyes. You nod awkwardly, feeling as though you’d done something wrong. “I see you’ve been reading the news,” Grepo mused, “That’s good that you’ve shown interest. The world is vast and many world changing events happen every day. But don’t worry about it for now… Would you like some breakfast?”

You nod again, eyeing Grepo as he reaches up to pull some fruit from a net that hung over the kitchen’s counter. He pulled out a few bananas, grapes and apples. He lay them on the table, then walked into the cold storage pantry to fetch what looked to be a coconut with the cutout piece replaced at the top. He took out the cut out portion after a good shake, then poured some for you in a cup. You notice the liquid is more viscus than coconut water. “What is this?” you ask.

“It’s coconut milk,” Grepo informs you, smiling as he watches you pick out a banana and a apple. He sits across from you at the table and sighs. “Omi, in a short while I will return you to your parents. They must be terribly worried you aren’t home.”

You swallow a piece of the banana, looking very nervous now. You stare at your apple, focusing on its textures before speaking. “Papa will be so angry… I’m scared.”

Grepo laughed breathily, brows stitched in concern. “I hear your father is a tough guy, but I’m sure it’s because he loves you. I’ll speak to him and your teacher. I do have a proposal for you though.” Your ears perk towards him but you don’t look up, too anxious to make eye contact. He continues, “What if I helped you learn to use gauntlets to fight? Zepo told me you had problems landing hits, so I thought extensions would help. They make focusing on the flow of electro easier, too.”

You look up in surprise. “You want to train me?” He nods. You look down at your ape hands, observing the flat nails you weren’t used to. “I… I can try.”

Grepo nodded, “Wonderful to hear. I’m sure you’ll be able to change back soon.” He stood and headed over to the next room, the living room, to pick out a book from the shelf. He placed it on the dining room table in front of you and sat back down. “This is the encyclopedia of devil fruits. What did your fruit look like?”

You both spend several minutes talking back and forth. You vaguely explain what you remember, a white melon with swirls- as most devil fruit had. Grepo searched the Zoan fruit section, knowing this had to be some sort of Human-Human fruit, but which? After much deliberating, Grepo flipped to the section exclusively about mythical devil fruits. Some were likely out of date by now, fake, renamed or information expanded upon… but he eventually found the one you recognize.

“The Human-Human fruit: Mythical model Werewolf,” Grepo said, excitement shining in his eyes. “A mythical Zoan… Incredible. The kits at your school will be envious when they realize they’ve given away such a power.” At first you didn’t look convinced. Looking down at yourself you only saw a cosmetic change. What was the use of this humiliation? Maybe being smaller, you could be faster? Maybe you could camouflage among humans- hardly, with your ears and tail. It didn’t matter; what mattered to you is you couldn’t swim.

“It’s almost like sulong,” Grepo recaptures your attention. “It makes you stronger under moonlight, Y/N. While in sulong, I bet it makes you even stronger than other sulong. Isn’t that exciting?”

“But why am I like this, then?”

“Look at it this way,” Grepo gripped his chin between his thumb and pointer finger. “If it powers you up, this could be a dormant state for you. I wonder what kind of form lesser mink would get…”

Zepo and his mother, a snow white polar bear like Bepo appeared and introduced herself to you. Ada was her name. She went to fetch Bepo, bring the baby to meet you before feeding him her milk. You smile at the little bear, looking forward to seeing him often during your training.

“It’s great you’ve decided to train with Grepo,” Ada adjusted Bepo, “It will be wonderful for my boys to have a sparring partner. I know you’ll make all of Zou proud of you and your uniqueness. The mink are a diverse people, you know the adults accept you and the kits are simply learning…”

You nod along to Ada’s encouragement. You had never expected to have a family that treated you so kindly… To top it off, your father wouldn’t be angry if someone protected you, especially one of the Guardians. Maybe someday, somehow, you’d be able to follow your dreams again, too.

It Is present day, 20 days before life changed for everyone on Zou. In your mink form, you eyed the swarm of newcomers. You couldn’t believe your eyes; it was the Heart Pirates. Since the day you began training as a child, you read the newspaper each month for years. You came to find out there was a new crew making headlines. The Heart Pirates: man known as the Surgeon of Death and his submarine. It fascinated you. Eventually, you even found out your long lost childhood friend, Bepo, was on the sub, although he was offensively listed as a pet. How on earth he’d managed to survive jumping off Zunesha at age 8 was beyond you. At some point, you had to accept the kit had died at sea… Yet he was still alive and now he was here!

Your heart rate rose, watching the crew be guided into the Guardian’s Residential District led by Nekomamushi himself. You approach the mass of minks, spotting the familiar large figure of Ada who greeted Bepo with a big bear hug and flowing tears. Bepo had never seen your mink form, at least not often, since it had taken until your later teen years to figure out how to control the strength of your devil fruit. He may not recognize you, but you certainly remembered that little kit who made you laugh, who trained with you, who reminded you of your mentor. For now, you stand back until the mink begin preparing a feast for the newcomers, incredibly happy to see one of their own return.

At the table you sat beside Ada, who gently pat your paw in greeting. “Have you said hello to Bepo?” she asked, her voice laced with a jolly hum you hadn’t heard in a while. You shake your head, taking a bite of the hippo meat on your plate. “I see,” Ada continued, “Well, we can ease you into it, yes? It’s true he may not remember you… and we do need to have a talk with him about our men.” A pain shoots through your chest, realizing what she meant almost immediately. Bepo had left because Zepo had set out to sea. You wonder if Bepo found Zepo or if he knew what had happened to him. If he didn’t, it was even less likely he knew about Grepo, either.

“Didn’t you tell him anything?” You ask Ada, although you felt awkward doing so at the table.

“No,” Ada gently pat you on the head, “He’s quite happy right now, darling. I don’t think he noticed, he was so overwhelmed by the attention. The minks hadn’t expected them to arrive; it’s wonderful that Bepo protected his vivre card of Zunesha all this time, otherwise I doubt he would have made it back.”

“Oh, right,” you reach into your pant pocket, pulling out a small piece of Zunesha’s vivre card. It was kept inside a small bottle with a necklace attached in case you ever wanted to wear or secure it to something on your person. All minks eventually had this in the case they left Zou for whatever reason. “Yes, it’s amazing he kept it safe,” you conclude, “That’s quite incredible, considering how vast this world is.”

After the meal, the Heart Pirates were escorted to their temporary living accommodation. They were told that early the next night, they would meet with Nekomamushi and Pedro to discuss their plans. Disappointed you were likely not going to be a part of that conversation, the curiosity making your skin itch, you focused on the next best thing: Bepo and two of his crew mates were following Ada back home. You walked behind them quietly, not wanting to introduce yourself in such a somber state. You knew that when he realized not only Zepo was dead, but Grepo was as well, Bepo would need space anyway.

Bepo laughed with his two rowdy crew mates. They both bore hats adorned with their namesakes, Shachi – Orca – and Penguin. Shachi was clearly pretty drunk, while Penguin was tipsy. You felt a bit drawn to the Penguin fellow, more than just the fact they were lesser minks but he was rather cute. You sigh, scolding yourself for worrying about that now. Bepo leapt in excitement when he saw the old bamboo hut nestled between two great fruit trees not too distant from the base of the Whale. Your mind flashes back to the day Grepo found you as you look from Bepo, then the Whale. Your felt the tears begin to threaten to escape you yet again.

“Amazing!” Bepo hollered. “Isn’t it cool, guys? It’s just how I remember it,” Bepo led his friends over, eagerly beginning a story from his childhood. Ada stepped back to stand with you, a worried expression on her face. “And then, Dad hunted us this huge alligator for dinner to celebrate, right at this table!” Bepo placed his paws on the wooden table you had sat at the first time you had breakfast here. Bepo whirled around to look towards his room where he and his sibling had slept. The two large beds were neatly made inside, one of which you sometimes used when visiting Ada, the room generally void of anything but some of your own belongings you left there to groom yourself, read, or change clothing. “Man,” Bepo sighed, “This place feel so… empty.”

Ada cleared her throat, “Bepo,” she said gently. “Can we sit at the table a few minutes?”

Bepo turned towards her and gave her a bright smile, “Y-yes, ma’am—I mean, mom!” he saluted her, too used to doing so to his captain, then sat down along with Shachi and Penguin. You reluctantly sat at the end of the table, not wanting to be in focus too much. Bepo finally noticed you existed, tilting his head a bit, “Who’re you, wolf?”

You wince, he didn’t remember. You raise both arms, revealing them fully to him. He seemed to perk up, recognizing your piebaldism. “It’s me, Y/N, you remember, right?”

Bepo nodded enthusiastically, “Omi! It’s amazing to see you again. You look strange as a mink. I thought about you, but I was trying to figure out what you’d look like as an adult human.”

“Human?” the two boys said in unison. “Can we see?!” They stand up, their hands on the table and mouths agape, leaning towards you. You laugh lightly, Bepo made them sit.

“Focus, guys,” Bepo said. “Mom wants to talk.”

“Right!” said Penguin.

“Mom!” said Shachi.

“Not your mom, my mom!” Bepo protested. The three laughed. Ada laughed as well.

Silence fell in the room, the two bears and the lesser mink staring at one another. You observe Ada’s nervous state, touching both her paws to stroke her snout. “Bepo,” she began, “I have difficult news. I’m sorry, I can’t hide it from you.” Bepo sat silently, brows stitched together in concern. His friends remained leaning back in their chairs, deep frowns etching their features. Ada sighs, seemingly sorting her thoughts, then began speaking, “Your father, Grepo… He died of heart failure.”

“What?!” Bepo stood quickly, “Papa is dead? When did this happen?”

Ada cleared her throat, notably uncomfortable. She knew the question was coming, but wasn’t sure whether she should tell the truth. Knowing someone else within the family – cousins – or the other guardians like Pedro would likely eventually comment on it she realized she had to. “About a year and half after you left,” Ada said. She seemed reluctant to go any further, worried Bepo would blame himself. The young bear mink stared down at the table, tears dripping down his snout. His two friends had gotten up and were gently patting his back and shoulders, doing their best to comfort him.

You look at Ada again, rubbing water out of your eyes. She was crying quietly, too. She likely wouldn’t continue to inform him about Zepo. Pedro would likely drop the news the next morning and only he could accurately recount the events best. There had been no prolonging not telling Bepo about his father as he stood in the very house he grew up in, void of one of the closest people of his earliest childhood life. Ada stood to comfort her son after a few minutes, nuzzling his soaked face gently, in which he obliged to the affection.

“I’m going to bed,” Bepo announced. It wasn’t late that night for the minks of Whale Forest, but it was late to the newcomers. The clock was at around 3 AM from what you could see; the men looked rather exhausted. Bepo walked into the room he once shared with Zepo, allowing Shachi and Penguin to enter with him. Penguin gives you and Ada a meek wave goodbye and closes the door behind them. Ada finally breathes again, wiping her tears away, and begins preparing tea for the both of you. You’d accompany Ada for a while, only leaving if she wanted space.

A few weeks would pass. Bepo felt a bit better after a while, or appeared to be better, and got to know you passively during meals with Ada. On occasion, a new Heart Pirate would accompany Bepo, introducing them personally to you. “Say, I have an idea,” said a woman – Ikkaku – he invited one day, “We’ve been busying prepping for our captain’s return, but how about we have a camp out together. Should be fun, then we can talk for longer!”

“Sounds great!” Your black lips spread into a wide, toothy grin. “Maybe I’ll show you my human form.” Ikkaku clapped enthusiastically. Bepo shared her sentiment, beaming ear to ear.

“How exciting,” Ada laughed softly. “I’m surprised you hadn’t shown them yet.”

You shrug, “I try not to turn into it often, I still don’t have full control of my energy levels in mink form. It’s good to keep practicing, after all. I need a good reason to be in human form the majority of the time.”

Ikkaku laughed, “I’m sure human form is much easier to maintain than all that fur, though.” A giggle escapes you in agreement; it certainly had that type of benefit. Zou was humid so you could do without the fur most days. Not to mention, it was easier to sleep in this warm weather that way.

Ikkaku claps her hands together, “Alright! That settles that, then. Prepare yourself, you might get a stitch in your side after you’ve been faced with 18 idiot men…”

Despite the safety Zunesha provided, this event with the Heart Pirates never occurred. A sound rang in your ears one fateful morning, stirring you from your deep slumber. You open your human eyes and look around the room, the sound becoming clearer as your awareness honed in. The Raiding Bell? You sat up, breathing heavily as panic began to set in. What was happening to Zunesha? Almost on cue, you cover your ears as Zunesha trumpeted, the ground – it’s back – shook. The sound reverberated through your house, hurting your sensitive ears even as you covered them.

“Darling!” your mother appears at the entrance of your room once the sound died away. “Zunesha is being raided. Ready yourself, Nekomamushi is bound to call us out!” Your mind flashes to your father a moment as you got up. It had been several years since he’d moved out from your home, but you wondered how he was reacting to this alarm. Next was, of course, Ada, her son and his crew. Surely, they were all headed to Nekomamushi and preparing for a fight. Whatever was attacking it must be huge, considering even Zunesha was responding.

In your wolf form once again, you dress quickly and rush out the door. As expected, the Ruler of the Night was waiting for everyone to show up, standing at the center of the Guardian’s District. Bepo stood before him with his crew already assembled. Being pirates, you were sure they were used to emergencies and trained to be ready at a moments notice. Nekomamushi cleared his throat as the last of his people appeared. “Goro nya, nya!” His toothy mouth was strained into a grimace. “Prepare yourselves, all warriors under my ruling will fight. For now, we must trust in the Idiot of the Day’s people to hold them off. Once prepared, rest! It isn’t my country until night fall. Full force, we will take them down!” turning away, he called out, “Go!” At that, you gaze at Bepo for a moment, seeing him turn to his crew mates and give out some orders. Pride warmed your chest, seeing Bepo fully grown, second in command to a pirate crew was not what you expected of the 8 year old you had grown up with. It was beyond incredible.

Returning to your home you quickly prep your uniform and gauntlets for the fight. It was an understatement to say you were restless throughout the day; sleep was practically impossible. You did your best to meditate, the familiar sound of Zunesha flooding the streets with sea water sending relief through you. Eventually, you did manage to fall asleep, but you were ready to jump at any given notice.

“It’s my country when the moon is up!” Nekomamushi howled as he replaced Inuarashi on the battlefield, flanked by all of us from the Whale Forest, the Guardians running at his front. “I won’t let any invaders get away!” He jumped and lunged immediately at the enemy, Jack the Drought, with his claws poised and glowing. “Don’t think you can get out of here alive!” Jack lifted his mammoth trunk to retaliate, only for Nekomamushi to leap, spin, and grab said trunk. With an indescribable ease, Nekomamushi flips the entire mammoth onto it’s back.

“Master, the city!” Called one of the Guardians, standing beside him now, looking over the scene passed Jack’s stunned form.

“Never mind, I heard what’s going on,” Nekomamushi took out his pipe and lit it, “You came looking for a warrior from the Land of Wano, haven’t you?” He looked down at Jack, a sneer spreading across his face, “I wouldn’t let any samurai step onto this island. If they came in, I’d be the first to bite them to death!” He opened his toothy mouth wide to make his voice most clear, “For I am Nekomamushi, the man who awaits the dawn of this world!” Thus Nekomamushi calmly mocks Jack, cleaning his face with his wrists, and Jack – clearly agitated – rumbled and stood. Morphing back into his equally massive human form, his long blonde hair was in braids and a pony tail; his outfit’s spikes and his mammoth horns sharp, his muscles rippling.

“Captain Jack!” cheered his minions, encircling around him in all of his 27 feet of height, double the height of Nekomamushi.

“That must be the ancient version of the Elephant-Elephant fruit. You’ve eaten such a rare fruit,” Nekomamushi mused calmly, taking a puff from his pipe.

Ignoring his words, Jack’s piercing glare stared down at your people. “They have still got this many soldiers…” Jack removed the two extra ‘horns’ dangling around his neck, revealing them to be dramatically curved shotel blades.

“You fools are about to experience a terror like you’ve never known before!” One of his minions closest to him barked out.

Nekomamushi scoffs, “You should’ve withdrawn while that dog was treating you nicely.”

“Master!” one of the Guardians – Roddy – hands Nekomaushi his staff.

Taking the staff graciously, Nekomamushi faced Jack with the weapon poised in both hands. “We have just as many soldiers as some major countries!” A moment of silence passes, the two groups glaring each other down.

“And then there’s us, too!” You perk up from the center of your group, glancing back to see Bepo run passed you with his crew. Bepo spins and lands effortlessly some few feet behind Nekomamushi.

“Bepo,” Nekomamushi greeted him, “You guys are still under my care. You don’t have to fight!”

“It’s not going to work that way, Master!” Bepo eyes narrow at Jack, then he made his classic pose with both arms in the air and one leg up, “Though I became a pirate, this is still my home!” Penguin and Shachi adjusted their weapons behind him, “And to us – “ said Penguin, “ – this is our friends home!” Shachi finished. The crew cheered in agreement.

“Hah!” Nekomamushi smirked, turning his eyes back to Jack. “Don’t act like you’re fully fledged,” he said to the Heart Pirates.

Anger flashed in Jack’s soulless eyes, “I’ll destroy everything!”

“And we will fight back,” Nekomamushi retorted. Leaping, his spear clashes with Jack’s blades, igniting the beginning of the fight. Bepo and co rush into battle alongside the Guardians, while you nimbly run to catch up alongside the other fighters. Sparks flare from the impact of the two leaders’ weapons, causing an explosion.

You strain to see through the dirt and debris kicked up by the explosion, shielding your eyes. A figure appeared before you, a gifter with wings struck you across the face with a swift kick. Staggering only a second, you swiftly twist your body, throwing out an arm to slash the gifter with your spiked gauntlet. Blood splattered from the cuts on the enemies face, you back away to give yourself some distance from them as they writhe from the shock of your electro. The dust was beginning to clear, allowing your keen vision to catch the gifter in your sights before they could take off. Fast on your feet under the moonlight, you launch yourself at them and tear one of their wings to be assured they couldn’t get away. With a thud you hit the ground with the bat-mans body. Your fur bristles and electricity washes through the enemy, smoke bursting from their mouth as their struggling stops.

This encounter quickly followed by yet another gifter wielding a sword. You leapt up high, then dove down kicked your heel into the back of their head, throwing them straight to the ground, ultimately knocking them out. You spot Bepo not too far off, fighting a particularly nasty dude with what appeared to be a fox for a leg, it managed to catch Bepo’s arm in its teeth, though his boiler suit was plenty sturdy and did not rip. Using the gifters body weight for leverage he swung his own body to kick them straight in the face, sending them spinning away. Yet another enemy appears to tackle you: a pleasure with an axe. You roar, the sound having force to it, causing the enemy to reel back and lose balance. Biting into a part of their clothing, you lift them and throw them to the side, tossing them into the fray away from you. Your fur sparkled with energy, the moon visible enough to cast light over the battle field.

“Hyah!” Bepo effortlessly kicks an enemy away from you, sending them flying. “You look very pretty,” he complimented. “Super strong, too. It reminds me of sulong…”

“It boosts me in a similar way,” you remark, maiming another enemy as they swooped in. “Of course, it isn’t quite to the level of sulong, but its better than my base form.”

Bepo nods, acknowledging you. “My fathers been gone a long time,” he began, his voice unwavering. He stood behind you, guarding your back as you fought together. “I’m impressed with how much stronger you’ve become with only the beginnings of his training,” he kicked up, flipping back after making impact with a chin, “We should spar sometime- if we live!” You both duck, a sword swiping over you both.

With lightning speed you intercept Bepo and stab the pleasure with your electro charged gauntlet, splattering you with blood. The electricity causes them to writhe in pain before falling unconscious on the ground. “Alright!” You finally respond to Bepo, determination washing over you.

Bepo grinned. “Don’t think I’ve forgotten about Ikkaku’s proposal. We can do it when my captain returns.”

“I’d like that,” your heart raced, your mind venturing to Trafalgar Law. You admired him, the thought of meeting him still felt impossible.

You fought together throughout the first night, eventually growing apart on the field. As long as the moon was up you felt energy flowing. While others were beginning to waver from exhaustion, you continued pushing. Without the moon six hours of fighting would be unbearable; you were sure that the moment you relaxed moving would be difficult. At least this all assured you that you would sleep during Inuarashi’s turn.

The five days of battle were generally the same. Fight, rest, fight then rest. The waves of enemies were waning, but the strongest were slowly appearing. You knew you had to be more careful, you kept close to Bepo and his friends, using teamwork to take down stronger foes. At some point, Bepo managed to help out Nekomamushi. Unfortunately, before things took the worst turn, Bepo barely dodged Jack’s blade, a nasty gash forming along his forehead. Seeing him hurt, you and others make your way to him. Fastest, you get his head in your lap.

“Hold on!” You cried, nervously looking over the blood covered gash. Penguin fights off an enemy coming toward you; Shachi joins close beside him. Ikkaku reaches you both and quickly applies a cloth to help stop the bleeding.

As you sat helplessly pressing the cloth down on the wound, Jack suddenly transforms and trumpets out: “Get the gas!” You realize the sun was now rising, meaning Inuarashi’s group should be out soon… but you were certainly not returning home to the forest. A bomb explodes the very moment Inuarashi arrives at the edge of the field, Nekomamushi still standing, glaring at Jack with narrowed eyes. Then the town fills with noxious fumes. You cover your nose, trying not to inhale it, but you quickly find your vision spotting and you faint.

[This is art from an actual Pathfinder product! These menehune appeared in Razor Coast, a long delayed (and sadly, not very good) 3pp Pathfinder module. The mechanics that game used for menehune was as a variant of gnomes, which makes a certain amount of sense, with fire themed powers, which doesn't. That kind of sums up all of Razor Coast: it was more interested in stereotypes about Pacific Islanders and riffing on vaguely Hawaiian themes (like Pele and volcanoes) than it was about actual Pacific Island cultures.

Interestingly, there's a fair amount of debate about the age and origins of menehune legends. Some folklorists believe that they're syncretic, a combination of Native Hawaiian stories with European fairy lore. Others say that, because "manahune" is Tahitian for "commoner", that the original menehunes were an ethnic minority that was disenfranchised and displaced following Tahitian immigration to Hawaii. I was unable to find a scholarly or semi-scholarly reference to the idea that menehune use arrows, Cupid style, to make people fall in love, but it's commonly reported on Hawaiian tourism websites. Plus, it gives them a unique ability.]

Menehune are especially human-like fey who live on tropical islands. They are expert craftsmen and builders, and their monuments and achievements crop up overnight. Literally—menehune are strangely perfectionist, and if a construction job takes them more than a single night, they will abandon it. Fortunately, they work with supernatural speed, and a team of menehune can create roads, aquifers or ramparts in a matter of hours. Menehune dislike being interrupted or observed in this work. Menehune sleep during the day and work at night, typically in hollow trees, caves or other places that are comfortably dark. They are omnivorous, and feed on a diet of fruit, tubers and fish. Bananas are a particular favorite. Menehune are afraid of owls.

Few menehune relish a fight, but their incredible strength makes them relatively skilled combatants.  If interlopers attempt to spy on their work, the menehune will usually flee, although they may fire magical charming arrows as they go. These arrows do not charm the struck creature to the menehune, but instead cause brief, rapturous love towards the first compatible person the victim sees. If the menehune are pursued, or if their constructions are damaged, they may well respond with lethal force.

A menehune stands between two and three feet tall. Most have brown skin and red hair. They may be mistaken for especially burly halflings, especially at a distance.

favorite song: A song that I’ll never get tired of is "count me in” by early winters! It’s a very hmm quiet song. I think the feeling the song gives off is something that won’t ever really disappear in my life, so maybe that’s why I love it so much (this makes no sense LOL).

favorite instrument: I loveeee string instruments! Every time I hear it in a song I just think it makes it sound 1000% better haha. I got a personal soft spot for the Viola since I played it back in middle school! I also really love the piano, so that’ll be an honorable mention hah.

wearing: wonder woman pj shorts, a white loose t-shirt with purple flowers around the collar, oversized blue cardigan, black knitted crew socks! So like, pjs :~)

aesthetic: I change with the seasons tbh... I think during Summer it ranges between casual-boho and then Fall/Winter/Spring is just... grandma vibes LOL. I’m a big fan of loose clothes! It makes me feel very comfy haha.

favorite authors: Hmmmm Alexandra Bracken had a big impact on me! Her series “The Darkest Minds” is the trilogy that made me want to continue writing in high school! I also love William Blake because of his poetry book “the marriage between heaven and hell”, I loved it so much!

favorite animal sounds: I love the sound of a hummingbirds wings flapping! (idk if that counts as animal sounds?? but maybe I can get away with it huhu) We used to get a lot of humming birds in my front yard haha, they were very cute!

Remember that teaser I did a week ago or so? Well, its done now, presenting the stupidest thing ever: the staircase truck from Arrested Development, but Mad-Maxed. Significant inspiration comes from Scott Park’s illustration.

As a small tutorial, from that model seen earlier, I dissembled it into parts, stripped the paint from the main body, and got ready for the conversion

The basic conversion was done with plastic from those cards that businesses try to sell you by sending them in the mail. Makes for a decent plastic card substitute. The stairs were done with heavily corrugated cardboard, they should have been lower down, but meh, that would mean significantly cutting into the body and that was meh. Railings are bits of wire

Next up was some basic mad-max stuff, at this stage I added rockets (nail tips and more of that cardboard), a front spike-ram thing (more credit card material but cut and bent), and glass replacement (that netting stuff you get around fruit and such... most fiddly thing ever to glue in there)

Next up was painting, I primed in black with the idea that the cracks for the doors and hood would show through after painting it white... kind of worked? but from there I dry-brushed layer after layer of white, mainly to get a decently constant coat and to not fill in the cracks, sadly I didn’t get a pic of it in the white, but w/e.

Next was to paint the details from the show: namely the stripes and the logos. I was tempted to try and print all this out on stickers (or other decal-esque things), but I decided to just free-hand it, I already had put like, 3 hours into the car at this point, and I didn’t want it to go on forever... its mostly a joke car, I doubt I’ll ever get a chance to use it in game (partly b/c trucks aren’t that great in gaslands imo, they’re slow, hard to maneuver, and the extra hp and crew is barely offset by the additional cost compared to a car), and its also an excuse to get used to tiny detail (which isn’t a strong suit of mine, my hands are kind of shaky)

I wanted to add graffiti to the panels, mainly to continue the gaslands/ mad max aesthetic, so I went with gags from the show, “NVR NUDE”, “$ banana graphic”, “CORN BALLR” were what I went with, which are probably my fav. 3 running gags (and the staircase car obv).

I also rusted and dusted the car... wasn’t going for super good paint job here, more just speed, I think the graffiti and the rust/ dust was about 1.5-2 hours of work? Finally, I made the little grenades-on-sticks that I’m fond of (mad max wiki says they’re Thunder sticks). This is pretty fiddly to, its basically cutting a nail with ribs (using a hacksaw), then glueing a bit of wire to it (after it cools down, the hacksaw leaves it pretty hot)

Repeat that 10 times, and you have the grenades. These were glued onto the stair case, and flags made of scraps of cloth were glued to the wires as well... these smell bad when you do it, but they stay in w/e shape you make them, so you can make it look like they’re flapping in the wind or w/e.

And thats all for now! I have another build in mind, a bit larger than this one, a lot more mad-max, and hopefully will become the flag-ship of my group, until then, happy waste landing!

Talks Machina Highlights - Episode 109

Covering for @eponymous-rose​ because she has just moved and has one chair in her apartment, and also her ceiling is apparently making it rain inside. Also, I’m still riding the high of seeing this show live, so let’s get this going! 

Tonight’s guests: Liam, Taliesin, and Marisha! Late start; Brian blames Spectrum. I blame Sam.

Regular Critical Role this week; Sam’s oneshot is next week! Tonight’s After Dark will be a rebroadcast of the panel from GenCon. 

Everyone is a little stunned at how much they packed into last weekend. Marisha is amazed that they’ve gone from 250 people to 2500 people in the audience, especially considering the number of volunteers and staff they need to run a show like this. Brian is very surprised it had so few hitches in the production. 

Marisha helped Brian piece together his outfit (it was Ashley’s shirt and pants from New York that Ashley made him get).

No one knew what Sam would be wearing until fifteen minutes before showtime. He originally used a Chessex dice box, but Liam “didn’t feel it would read in the back row” so he used a larger, hollow box. 

A fan offered Brian ten thousand dollars for that box after the show. Yikes.

The art book has been in planning for a year; the first official meeting was at the last ComicCon. Liam’s favorite piece is a group portrait that has not been seen before. Taliesin loves that there are bits of “ephemera” scattered throughout the book.

Neither Liam nor Taliesin anticipated how much work the book would be. No release date yet.

Liam had no plan to make sure the potion went to Sam. He just wanted a lighthearted moment, and hadn’t planned to use it until the Raven Queen’s trammel almost broke the episode before. 

Keyleth suspected foul play on the love potion because she knows Vax well enough by now, but wasn’t worried because she likes lighthearted trickster Vax.

Brian was hoping Scanlan would see a mirror first. Taliesin hoped for Keyleth or Grog. Marisha hoped for Vax. 

The Gif of the Week is Matt tearing up his notes. It’s still hilarious.

Liam feels like the whole night was a scene from 300, including the chant of Vax’ildan. It was overwhelming in a good way.

Liam thinks some of Sam’s song/speech schtick was prepared before the show, but Taliesin and Marisha think he was adlibbing some of it as he went. Everyone marvels at his ability to improv so quickly.

Taliesin thinks Vex would have taken a finger or two if Scanlan hadn’t backed off. 

Marisha thinks Keyleth has come to the acceptance that death is likely, even though she’s hopeful they will survive. 

Marisha was slightly concerned that Scanlan would be angry at the prank and leave again. 

Liam doesn’t intend the pranks to be as good as they are, he just trusts Sam Riegel. “I just had to hold the football for Riegel and let him kick it.”

If Scanlan had seen Vex first, Percy would have been amused at first and then quickly annoyed. Taliesin also notes that Percy doesn’t know there was a love potion involved and is vain enough to think it was genuine.

There will be a Talks Machina next week even though a lot of people will be at Burning Man; it just “won’t be a traditional Talks.” 

Brian was excited to emcee the live show even though he had to stall a few minutes at the beginning because the merch line was so long. He felt like he had a contact high from how many Critters were excited to see him and the crew, the crowd singing All-Star before the show, and everyone just being generally enthusiastic. 

The guy who owns the theater said they have had rock concerts that were less exciting; he apparently thought something had happened after the first cheer and came out to check that everything was okay.

Keyleth is okay plummeting to her death these days. 

Taliesin, Marisha, and Liam all feel they will be battling Vecna on top of the titan. They don’t think it will stop until he’s defeated. 

Liam was certain he was going unconscious when Matt said he didn’t have the dice for the damage. Vax’s HP dipped to the 30s. 

Brian sat next to Andrew from CritRoleStats during the show. Hi, Andrew! He does the math in his head for the HP tracking and Brian kept interrupting him by accident. 

Percy is very much looking forward to killing Delilah again. “She’s the gift that keeps on giving.” He also says something about keeping her in a dungeon and killing her every week. Marisha: “Geez louise, that’s dark!”

Keyleth thinks it’s better for her to be down a high-level spell slot than for Scanlan to be, since he has so many high level Hail Marys. 

Brian marvels again at how intense the crowd was. The pre-show panel helped amp them up as well. 

Favorite GenCon moments for everyone! Brian: watching the live show in the audience and going to the Logic show. Brian got to lose at MarioKart on that stage as well. He came in 7th out of 8, and six of the other competitors were bots. Liam loved Bobby pulling Hannah Banana onstage to rap. I’m missing a lot of these references, so apologies if any of this is misspelled! The guy behind Brian’s empty seat apparently cheered very hard for him, even though he lost. Brian also loved Travis’s face when they walked out onto the football field on Sunday. Taliesin loved photobombing Critters. 

During the standing ovation, Marisha felt “pure, distilled, emotional ecstasy.” Liam was very humbled by the love for something they created around Marisha’s dining room table. Taliesin can’t find words for it. Brian felt like it was a wall of love. 

Right before he came out to do the initial announcements, Brian gave Matt a hug and unexpectedly started crying, so he had to compose himself before starting the show. At the end of the show, he looked over and saw Matt had tears in his eyes as well.

Liam loves that events from the game feel like real memories, and that what they do matters so much to so many people. 

After Dark: aka That Pre-Show Panel From the Con

Everyone is nervous about the show except Travis, who’s stoked. Everyone had a strategy session beforehand, except the rules of the game kept getting in the way. Matt: “Antimagic field does not work against spells cast by deities, sorry!”

Marisha and Laura love the game because of the roleplaying elements. Marisha notes there’s still a problem with D&D being perceived as a boy’s game. Liam runs a game for five small girls who love it because it’s not treated as a game for girls; “get ‘em while they’re as young as possible.” 

Any two NPCs in a cage match: Marisha picks Kevdak and Groon. Laura picks Trish the Dish and Kima. Matt: “Now we’re just me at home playing with my action figures, and I’m okay with that.” 

Marisha notes that Critical Role builds every week, which is different than the pre-produced final product from Dread. She loves Dread’s team-building aspect for the puzzles and atmosphere. Matt: “It felt weirdly magical.”

Taliesin and Marisha are very proud of Dread; there will be more to come.

An audience member asks about favorite one-liners: “Your secret is safe with my indifference.” “Life needs things to live.” “Where’s Larkin?”

They talk about how weird it is to have their game so big. They’re constantly amazed by the fan productions of love. 

Matt works hard on the balance between grandiose successes, failures, and heroism, and the importance of grounding the adventure in realism. Liam loves that it runs the gamut from an argument over a pair of shoes to a beloved city crumbling around them. 

Matt never imagined this world he made up would end up in a campaign guide. It was originally a generic fantasy land for his friends to play in, but the more life he put into it the more life his players put into it, and it was very daunting to try to capture all that collaboration into a book for other people to play in. He talks a bit about Joey, his co-writer, who helped him with the overwhelming load of work and created some ideas of his own.

If Laura could reroll one roll from the whole campaign, she describes a moment pre-show where she was trying to slide on her knees through a troll’s legs to shoot up, except she rolled a 1 and the troll stepped on her stomach. Travis would reroll the skull spike. “I wanted that one bad.” Taliesin feels bad rolls are character-building. Matt mentions the roll in the Sunken Tomb, and apparently Laura has never realized how much hinged on that one roll before this moment. Matt thinks of the roll Raishan failed against the Feeblemind. “Thanks, Keyleth!”

Travis prevented Laura from taking a gift earlier, but totally accepts a gift beer from an audience member. The same person brings up how good D&D is for blind and low-vision players since it’s theater of the mind, and as my residency was in low-vision rehabilitation, this means a lot to me. Matt also brings up Critical Role Transcripts as another great method of accessibility. They have over 60% of the whole show completely transcribed, which is over $50,000 in transcribing time. Matt talks about the importance of writing down details for NPCs you create on the fly and fleshing them out after the campaign if you think they might recur, because the players will remember every time if you don’t. 

Senokir was made up on the spot. Serious Alpha technical issues, so I’m sorry if I miss some stuff here. 

Matt does not believe in punishing players for being clever. He would rather throw away material and reuse it later. 

Sam is proud of the Washington Football Team inspiration and the library sequence with Laura. He liked the pressure of coming up with so many songs on the spot. 

Grog would take the Deck over the Alchemy Jug without a thought.

Travis will always choose character-based leveling for Grog over meta-gaming every time, especially if it makes Grog dumber. Sam looked up good spells for bards and the mansion was not one of them, but he took it because he loved the idea and hasn’t regretted it. Laura feels the same way about keeping Trinket through the Pathfinder transition. Taliesin never took Luck for the same reason; he feels the potential of the gun backfiring is the price he should pay. “I don’t want to undo my weaknesses.”

Liam’s choice of Fated is why Matt started thinking about him being fate-touched. 

More serious technical issues, sorry. Matt talks about the fact that all DMs will make mistakes and that it’s important to find creative solutions within the bounds of the world you’ve made. 

If Vex could reincarnate as anything, she’d pick “angel babyyyy!” Marisha would like to see Keyleth as a half-orc.

Laura is very disappointed Matt didn’t haggle the last time they went to the flea market together.

Coronavirus: Brand Moves for Thursday April 29

As some US states begin to reopen non-essential businesses, the National Retail Federation has announced Operation Open Doors, which provides guidelines and assistance for brands trying to bring their brick-and-mortar stores back into operation during the pandemic. The NRF separated retailers’ priorities into four areas: health and safety, people and personnel, logistics and supply chain and litigation and liability, and has resources available online to help with each. But the group stressed that it needs government help with such efforts.

Mattel’s latest special edition action figure collection, #ThankYouHeroes, is commemorating delivery drivers, nurses, EMTs, doctors and grocery workers. Proceeds from the new Fisher-Price line of 16 action figures and five Little People Community Champions will go to#FirstRespondersFirst, an initiative created by the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Thrive Global and the CAA Foundation to support first responders. Mattel is also providing toys to Bright Horizons daycare centers, which recently opened in partnership with #FirstRespondersFirst for the children of first responders. According to Mattel, these topical toys will be the first of several brand efforts designed to support today’s everyday heroes, with others kicking off in the coming weeks as part of the California-based company’s broader platform for social responsibility.

On Monday, fashion retailer J. Crew and its sibling brand Madewell started advertising packages of three masks made in their popular gingham and stripe patterns, and both brands’ products sold out in less than a day. By Tuesday morning, the product page on J. Crew’s site for the nonmedical face masks advised consumers to “Please check back for a restock soon.” Sales were limited to two per customer. Banana Republic (which has also been advertising “video chat” accessories) is another retailer to have run out of masks.

Bakery chain Panera Bread has re-thought the way it provides services to consumers during the pandemic. Panera Grocery offers contactless pickup or delivery of grocery items at a time when individuals are attempting to shop less to reduce exposure to coronavirus. Consumers can order produce and dairy items as well as bread, bagels, sandwiches and soups through Panera’s website, app or GrubHub.

HP Inc. and its partners are working to close the homework and digital access gap during the pandemic: HP has launched HP Turn to Learn – a program that will deliver educational content curated from leading scientific, publishing and media companies to support teachers and students in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. HP is partnering with TIME for Kids, Britannica and NASA on the program, which will focus on providing critical resources to Title I school districts and underserved students across the US. HP has removed the paywall from its TIME for Kids digital content and will ensure immediate access to printed classroom materials (textbooks, workbooks and other paper-based assignments). The program will ensure K-Grade 3 learners in select school districts will have access to TIME for Kids, Britannica and NASA for the rest of the school year, with the program expanding to K-12 soon.

Google is opening up its Google Meet videoconferencing service to anybody who wants to use it, instead of just offering it to enterprise and education customers via G Suite. The company says anybody with a Google account will now be able to create free meetings of up to 100 people that can last any amount of time, though after September 30th it may restrict meeting length to 60 minutes. Users won’t be able to just click a link and join a meeting; they’ll need to be logged in so meetings can be better controlled by their hosts. Google will also introduce other safety measures as a way of differentiating its Meet product from Zoom, which has had a meteoric rise that over the past few months and caught both Google and Microsoft flat-footed but suffered a series of security problems, which the fast-growing company has scrambled to address. Meet is also to be integrated into Gmail.

WhatsApp has launched an eight-person group video chat feature, up from the previous four participants. WhatsApp reports that over the last month, people on average spent over 15 billion minutes talking daily on WhatsApp calls. To utilize the new higher participant limit, users need to update to the latest version of WhatsApp.

Facebook is to broadcast a live graduation day ceremony titled #Graduation2020 with a commencement address from Oprah Winfrey and other celebrity appearances and performances. The virtual ceremony will acknowledge US high schools and colleges by name, state by state, including photos and videos of graduating classes. The ceremony video will be shared on Facebook Watch, with highlights posted to Instagram’s eponymous account. Facebook’s virtual activation will give both Facebook and Instagram grads a reason to celebrate graduation on social media despite schools being closed throughout summer. Facebook and Instagram are also adding a variety of creative tools to help grads celebrate the occasion, including a virtual graduation hub and custom filters on Facebook, as well as a grad countdown sticker, AR effects and grad-related songs added to music stickers on Instagram.

Footwear brand Hush Puppies is debuting a giveaway program for seniors who may be lonely and in need of support—both emotionally and physically. The company is giving away 5,000 pairs of Power Walker shoes, what it describes as “grandpa style,” in a program that asks customers to send the shoes via a form on their website to those seniors in their lives who could use a lift. According to a Hush Puppies spokeswoman citing a report in the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, 43 percent of U.S. adults who are at least 60 years old were already feeling lonely prior to the pandemic. Hush Puppies will also give 500 pairs of Power Walkers, which retail for about $100, to a retirement home in Grand Rapids, Michigan that is near its Rockford, Michigan headquarters.
