I hear you're where to go for Witcher fic recs! How about some with Geralt being protective over Jaskier? Shippy, if you can find any, but I wouldn't mind platonic! I just want Geralt to look out for his bard. Thank you for your time!
Hello!! Here's what I've got! There's a wide variety of settings and levels of angst, so hopefully there should be something for everone :D
As always, please feel free to add more recs or promote your own work in the notes!
~
Don't Leave Me by @geraskierficrecs (Rated M, 6.2k)
Jaskier’s hands tighten around Geralt before slowly losing their grip, spasming where they fall limp. “Ger--geralt--” “Don’t you dare,” he snarls back, “Don’t you dare try to give me your fucking goodbyes. You are not dying.” “S--silly man.” Jaskier’s smile is full of painful fondness. “Would you fight death for me?” Geralt swings him up into his arms and nearly weeps at the sound of familiar hooves running in his direction. “Every. Fucking. Time.”
If You Give a Bard a Lute by @ghostinthelibrarywrites (Rated T, 10k)
After Jaskier’s father disowns him, confiscates all his possessions— including Filavandrel’s lute— and kicks him out with nothing but the clothes on his back, Jaskier spends a long, hungry winter barely surviving. When he reunites with Geralt in the spring, his witcher is determined to get his lute back, even if it means recruiting his fellow witchers to stage a heist.
Wild Blue Yonder by @jaskierswolf (Rated T, 5.3k)
Geralt's bookshop is slowly falling apart and he's ready to give up when Jaskier wanders into the store
remember me I sing by @echo-bleu (Rated G, 3.1k - also includes Yennnefer)
Filavandrel's gift was so much more than a simple lute. It seemed fitting, that Jaskier’s soul would be made of wood and strings and beautiful sounds. The problem is that now Rience has his lute and is threatening to burn it if they don't hand over Ciri. And Jaskier has never told anyone that his very life is tied to his beloved instrument.
This Is How I Disappear by @stacyholmes (Rated T, 5.4k)
Jaskier keeps texting unknown number. Geralt keeps reading said texts without answering.
The Footsteps We Follow by thiswildheart (Rated T, 16.5k)
Look, Jaskier's got a lot going on. He's painfully aware that there are cataclysmic events happening and that the troubled teenager he knows might save the world or speed along the end of days. He's also in love with a man who's never even admitted that they're friends, which is almost as bad. Oh, and he's still working as the Sandpiper, only now a terrifying eldritch creature has entrusted him with the Song of the Seven to give hope to the elves and help them fight back against their oppression. It's probably the bravest thing he's ever done, but not everyone sees it that way. Luckily he knows some people who excel at last minute rescues. ... then he just has to figure out how to tell Geralt why so many people are trying to kill him. This is going to go great.
Getting Warmer (orphaned) (Rated T, 8.2k)
Injured and freezing after a kikimora hunt gone wrong, Geralt and Jaskier must wait out a thunderstorm at the bottom of a cliff, huddling for warmth. It is here that Geralt finally confronts his feelings for the bard.
Jaskier and Mountains Just Don't Mix by C4t1l1n4 (Rated G, 3.8k)
Despite the other Witchers' positive reaction to Geralt's bard, Vesemir is reluctant to have a human stay with them at Kaer Morhen so Jaskier attempts to leave and ends up almost freezing to death on the side of the mountain. Hypothermia fic
Immediately, I Love Him (He's Doing His Best) by @hum-my-name (Rated G, 26.5k)
"In which Greg is some sort of guardian angel, I don't know" <><> A few days ago, Joey Batey did an interview in which he created a lovely little character named Greg. A few days ago, I decided to write a cute little thing about Greg and Jaskier being the best of friends throughout the years, with a dash of Geralt and Jaskier friendship as a treat. 13k words later, here we are. Enjoy.
Broken Mirror by happy_hermit (Rated G, 2.1k)
To Geralt’s credit, he waits until they’re well away from Kaer Morhen to ask the question. He also waits until Yennefer and Ciri have gone to bed, which makes the whole thing feel a bit too calculated for Jaskier’s liking, which is to say that he doesn’t like it at all. “Where’s your lute, Jaskier?” Jaskier doesn’t quite flinch, though his heart does something of the sort all on its own. It is very much a wound that hasn’t healed; as is most of him, these days.
Echo by @kingthunder (Rated E, 29.5k)
Jaskier loses his voice the morning after a concert. As he and Geralt find new ways to fill the silence between them, they realize it isn't only Jaskier's voice that's been lost—and getting it back will bring them closer than they've ever been before.
If There's Any Sleep At Night by @smolalienbee (Rated T, 22.8k)
The mare is but a silhouette of a human and yet at his words something passes through her expression - whether it’s surprise, joy, fear, Geralt doesn’t know. But it’s clear that what he said has struck her in some way. (“She is not some mindless monster, Geralt.” He remembers Jaskier’s words.) A mare, also known as a mara or a zmora - a malicious entity, a bringer of nightmares and a demon of the night. An easy enough contract to fulfill, if only frustrating, or at least that’s what Geralt believes when he first sets out to hunt down one such mare. What he doesn’t expect is to be wrapped up in a tale of a wronged soul, of love and of joy.
Also, because I'm not above reccing my own fics, here's a few I've written!
Wash Away the Blood and Tears by me (Rated T, 1.8k)
Jaskier re-injures his fingers while distracting Nilfgaard from Ciri. Afterward, Geralt volunteers to help wash his hair. Or: In which Jaskier gets a bath and a nap, and Geralt gets a new role in the group.
We'll Build a Den Out of Pillows (And Get Drunk Again) by me (Rated G, 2k)
Jaskier gets sick. When Geralt asks how to help, Jaskier jokingly suggests that he build a pillow fort. He does not expect Geralt to take it seriously. Geralt takes it seriously.
~
If you want more, there’s a Protective Geralt tag on AO3 that I’m sure has many lovely works I haven’t read!

A few hours were gone by but Sukuna was gone after it started to heavily rain seeing the clouds forming. Warden Kinie was silent looking from the window but her golden eyes were glowing as she looks quiet hearing some thunder.
"........"
~~~~Flashback/Two hours ago~~~~~
'What are you implying here? You wish to-'
"As I said; I wish to know more about you Kinie. So how about a simple..meet up at my main office you and me. I really would love to know more about you. Even with us speaking to business. So, here is my deal. After you see what I'm willing to offer, you can get to know me better and I'll help you with whatever you ask. Anything at all." He was holding her hand again but she looks quiet then down.
What is his deal? Kinie wasn't sure how to feel about this given the fact she was one of the toughest wardens here in New York. However, this man..he had more power around his little finger and it was terrifying. But she wouldn't let him know that!
"..I said I would think about it remember? I don't....I still need time to think of a answer."
"I know you do..but take all the time you need. I can be of some help to you my princess. I mean, after all.." He then did something she was not expecting. He pulls her close against his strong form, making her tense as he feels her hand held so delicately while touching her cheek.
"I know that I'm willing to help someone as beautiful as you." he said with his red eyes looking down at her. He was way too close but she only looks away from his gaze that Sukuna smiled. Still cute. In a moment, he gently lets go but looks still holding her hand.
"I hope to hear from you again, Miss Warden but don't take too long..I tend to be.....curious of your choice. And I Hope to hear about more of my baby brother's release sooner than I hoped....." he said getting ready to leave but in that moment, he kissed her cheek making her quickly hold it. He smiled to her then turns to leave the office and a speechless Kinie.
"......."
~~~~~~~~~End of Flashback~~~~~~~~~
Kinie said nothing but she only grits her teeth growling deeply to herself. Damn it. She will not show weakness even to a man like that. Though, she was curious to what he means by what he said. Even so, she only sighed to cover her face for a moment while wondering. What will she do now?
~~~~~~Meanwhile with Jinx & Ink~~~~~~~~
They were taking a slight break but Ink was happily eating some food that luckily had pizza bites here! She was smiling chewing on one she enjoyed with Jinx eating some calazone for herself.
"Hey Ink?" she sees her swallow the pizza bite to look at her.
"Yeah, what's up?"
"Have you heard anything from Kali? She's been gone for a while now." she mutters thinking about where she is. However, Ink thinks a bit then shrugs.
"I don't know. I think she might be doing something really important right now so she isn't here with us. But, I'm hoping she is alright. Knowing her.." she smiled eating another pizza bite. Of course Jinx thinks about that but she also was checking her phone seeing that her other officers; Melinda, Vivi, Breezy, Mouse, Echo, and Ping were alright. Each still busy from their group chat messages. She smiled knowing her friends and officer sisters were good.
"Oh well, I'm sure she will be fine and what about the six claws? Are they behaving themselves?" she asked.
"Huh? They are but they are all pretty funny though. Even though six of them have done bad things..they seem like good guys somehow. I don't know, it's just a feeling in a way." she laughed rubbing the back of her head that Jinx blinks to laugh.
"True but knowing that I bet it's true. Even if some of these prisoners are evil and cold, not all of them are...bad. Though, it's hard to find which one is which.." she said thinking about Yuji again but when she did her cheeks flushed pink that Ink noticed.
"Uhhh you okay Jinx? Your face is red-"
"Ah! I'm fine! Sorry just thinking about something silly." she said waving her hand laughing that Ink tilts her head to blink. "Though, have you heard from your officers too?"
"I have. I already talked to Rust but he sounded busy. Hellmare is working with getting one prisoner to turn his ways back. It was said he was in a gang where the head leader is the baby sister of that other guy." Ink said thinking.
"Hold on, baby sister?" Jinx asked seeing Ink nod.
"Uhhhh what else? Oh! I heard Maggie was watching a wild ice fire user prisoner but he's pretty tough. She and him already got into some fights so far but she is tough to take him on. Fosh is alright working with officer mouse uhhh.....I heard Gerald and Taz were still in the study board and helping two new young officers. Ping and Timmy were their names......." Ink was thinking.
"Navarro is working with another special bomber I think that's on your time Echo right? He and her are working the bomb squad together and their doing well. OF course Jaron is alright working with Melinda from what he told me though he sounded worried about something." Ink said.
"Then Ophelia is working with another doctor named Hex I believe his name was but he seems to be a bit silent for one. He might be a bit nervous working around officers but she is getting close and hoping he is with her too.
"Hmmmm seems their all busy. Oh! But what about Shdwkyz? Have you heard from him?"
"As for him..No. I have tried to call him but his phone goes to voice mail. He's always busy even so but I understand. I heard the one he's watching over is also going through some investigation..."
"Geez..they all are busy alright. Well, hopefully they are all doing alright though Ink." she said smiling but Ink smiled knowing her fellow officers were alright. However, as the two were eating, they look seeing the heavy rain geez, it's coming down like crazy.
"Seems we might be in if this keeps up to tomorrow."
"Yeah...though, the rain is nice.." Jinx said with a hum seeing Ink smiling to nod. However, their break was over. Seems it was time to head back to work.
"I'll see you later Ink and be careful ya hear." Jinx smiled as Ink grins doing a fistbump with her as the two leave to head to their locations.
~~~With Jinx~~~
She was walking down the hallway thinking to herself but hearing the heavy downpours along with the storm passing by. "Wow, they were not kidding when they said it was going to be heavy rain today..guess this means it will go into tonight. Seems it will be loud during dinner." she sighed to keep walking. However, as she did, she looks seeing she's near Itadori's cell.
"........" She remains quiet thinking about it but looks away shaking her head. 'No no, your fine Jinx. Just keep moving along. I need to get to my location regarding keeping a eye on him. Or was he still doing his daily workout near the Gym? No, he as the other inmates are back in their cells till dinner comes around......so what is....' she thought as she was able to take a step.
A slight noise was heard making her stop. Her eyes widen hearing that and looks to the area where the cell was. She wonders if she was hearing things. Maybe she was. She turns to walk but the next noise was a weak moan this time to her eyes widen.
'Ohhhh no..no no not again...just ignore it Jinx..I need to....but what if something is wrong?' she thought hearing the really soft moans now coming out but they seem to be muffled? Biting her cheek, she goes to check it out. 'I'll just take a slight look see. It couldn't be that.....right?'
In a while, she gets to the same area again but Jinx made sure she was careful. She could just go and check on them just a quick look. 'You can do this. Just look and that's it......I need to be sure to show I'm-' as she was about to, the sound was more clear hearing a whimpering moan that made her quiet to press up against where she was before that night.
"Easy Kisho...don't struggle so much. You might end up getting hurting your wrists if you keep moving.." A familiar voice. Wasn't that Fushiguro? She heard nothing from him but heard another voice.
"Damn, you really got him tied up Megumi. I thought you said you were not into this sort of thing.."
"It's trying new things Itadori. Besides, he don't seem to mind it given the fact he's being punished again."
She blinks confused hearing this but given her better judgement, she goes to take a peak. Right away, her red eyes widen seeing what she did. Itadori and Megumi were there but Kisho too. However, he seems to be tied up using some of the sheets in their cell. He was sitting up against the wall with something covering his eyes and mouth a gag maybe? He was twitching and shaking with his head down but the sound of buzzing is heard.
'Hold on..what the fuck?! what are they doing to him!' she thought but saw some things were inside of him. It twitched quivering as he was shaking and whimpering through the gag they got him in.
"Mfffnnnnnn!! Mmmm!! Mmmmfffnnmmmm!!!" He was struggling from the binds Megumi put him in but he only looks holding the collar while he was near him.
"What's wrong? Feels good? You seem to be squirming there Kisho.." He said this into his ear but he lowers one hand to brush against the hole that he tenses up crying behind the gag.
"Mffnnn!!!"
"Hmmm, that's not a clear answer. Though...you seem to like it." He speaks against his neck but Yuji was looking at his cell phone while relaxing. However, he gets the feeling someone was watching that he only smirked.
"Or maybe we need to increase the vibrations.." he said seeing Megumi look till he held up a main remove and turns the dial. The vibrations got stronger that made Kisho throw his head back screaming behind his gag.
"MMMMMMMM!!!!!!! MMMMMMMM!!!!!!!" Right away, Kisho accidentally came again right on both Megumi and a bit on Yuji. The two blink seeing this but looks to him as Kisho falls back, panting through his nose deeply with tears running down his cheeks. Drool was even seeping past the gag that Yuji whistled.
"That was a big one.....I think we might have made him too sensitive."
"Maybe but he knows what I warned him. He was being punished because of today..and I'm sticking to it. Though, seeing him like this is still arousing..I think he'll sing nicely.." he said already hard.
"I figure but remember, he can't be too loud..you can do that later tonight after everyone is sent to bed Megumi.."
"Fine fine.." he grumbled but looks to him. "Hey Kisho, you still with us..." he asked but he pulls him close but he saw he was shaking still feeling the hard vibrations. He was squirming in pleasure not able to think that Yuji smiled.
"Hey Megumi, how about we ask him? Remove the gag for a second." Jinx blinks hearing this from her hiding spot, hearing some shuffling but heard heavy panting with weak moans now coming out.
"Ahhh~ Naahhh nuggnnnnn!!!" Kisho was shaking looking like he really was out of it. Even if he came twice, his body was aching and throbbing.
"Haaa...haaaaa...n..no....ah!! N..no more..No more p..pleasure please..I..I said I was..s..s..sorry.....mmmm..." He was twitching claming down on the vibrators inside of him. They were just going nuts and he's having trouble focusing right now.
"Ah ah ah remember what I said Kisho? You are being punished for today remember?...and it seems like a fun idea don't you think?" He gets near him that Kisho backs up shaking but he feels his chin grabbed to be pulled up.
"B..b...but it..eeeiiii!" He feels him pushing fingers into him now messing with his hole again. He shudders biting down on his bottom lip with Megumi kissing his neck.
"But what? Your not fighting back..so maybe you don't mind. You seem to Love the punishments I give you...naughty little phoenix.." he growls seeing Kisho shaking again.
"P..Pl...ease..please s..spare me...I.....Mfffnn!" He got kissed by him to keep him silent but Yuji saw this only to look at the door. Jinx was silent in hiding but her face was red again. Not again! She just took care of it but she was shaking where she stood hearing this.
'I have t..to stop this..I have to tell Warden Kinie b..but...why won't my legs move? I can't move..' she thought looking down hearing the moans from Kisho.
Yuji decided to smile having a idea even with the thunder outside. "Hey, let me have a go again..I think he really needs to be punished Megumi." He blinks to hear but Kisho's eyes widen. Again!?
"Hmmmm...fine...though knowing you, you'll end up maybe breaking him." he said but he carefully lets him go that Yuji pulls him against his chest looking down at him. Now Kisho was shaking with Megumi behind him to grab the vibrators.
"Y..Yuji?"
"It's alright....besides, I can give you something else. Think of it as another mini lesson...." he said before Megumi pulls them out hearing a yelp from Kisho that moans out loudly by mistake before Yuji covers his mouth.
"Mfffmm!?"
"Shhhhhhh....naughty phoenix. You'll make too much noise......." he chuckled but makes him lay down right on his back looking down at him. Even if Kisho was shaking, twitching and already aching he was too weak to move.
"Y..Yuji..w..wait please..I...I don't know if I'll st..stay sane if you d..do it again."
"Hmmm but that's the point. Since you wanna misbehave and keep getting in trouble...maybe we need to keep showing you that it's not good to be bad like that." he said to shift his position. He could see Kisho's half lidded eyes looking up at him shaking but he knew Megumi was watching seeing what he will do. He already lowers his own pants down showing himself off that Kisho was shaking worse.
"And since you came so much..you'll really be moaning just like a girl being so sensitive...." he teased.
"I..Itadori..I....wait a s...second I'm.." Before he could, he tenses feeling something hot slam into him that he arches his back crying out with eyes wide but they were hidden with the brown bangs that his lips were parted drooling as he quickly tightens around him. Yuji twitched feeling the hotter heat again that he chuckled to look at him.
"What was that? Seems you almost came from that. And the moan was blocked off thanks to the thunder. It's always hot to do it even during a storm..." he said keeping him down before pulling his hips back then thrusts down into him hearing weak moans from Kisho again.
"Ahhhhh....ahhhhhh.......hhaaaaa...N..No no..n.not a..a..ahhhhhhh...a...again..not a..again..mmmmmmm...."
"Not again? But your liking it...your already sucking me in so nicely...that means you must really want it." he said but Kisho was already in a daze gripping the sheets as Itadori was thrusting into him.
"I..I never said I..nuggghhhh!! Ahhhhh....ahhhhhhh......Ohhhh f..fuck....f..fu..mmmmmm!!"
"Don't lie to me Kisho..your tightening around me..and moaning out even if I'm not going hard..your already losing it. Besides, it feels good..don't it?" he said seeing him shaking but not answer. Growling, Yuji keeps looking down at him before quickening his hips.
"Answer me Kisho. Does it feel good?"
"Ahhhhhhh!!!! Y...Yes s..sir! F..fuck it f..feels good! It feels s..so good..I can f...feel it so d....deep..it's really deep!" he moans twitching as he was keeping his head back into the pillow while thrusting hard into him.
"mmmm good boy...even if you say you want to stop..your already submitting to me." he teased still slamming into him that Kisho was crying out still crying in pleasure shaking. Megumi was watching even if he was excited himself but he got hard already wanting a turn but he will wait. That and he'll have time to play with him tonight.
In the hall, Jinx was shocked hearing the moans but the storm was cutting out Kisho's moans with the rain. Though, he sounded so lost from this. These guys were just punishing him like nothing. She should do something but..she couldn't move. She couldn't speak thinking how Itadori would have dominated her if he wanted to!
"......"
However, she hears more moans and crying out as Kisho was moaning.
"Y..Yuji w..wait wait wait!" He struggles but he was shaking trying to clear his thoughts.
N..Not t..this position...N..Not this oooohhhhh!!!" He was shaking feeling Yuji's hands on his thighs holding them down as he thrusts now rougher into him. He was panting still punishing him but he only closed his eyes ripping the sheets due to the roughness.
"Ohhhhhh D...deep! T..too deep!!" he moans twitching that his tongue was out slightly while looking dazed out in pleasure.
"Damn Itadori.."
"Sorry, seeing him like this sorta got me wanna break him...though if you broke him it would be fun. I see that Miko will have fun breaking him herself if she wanted to." he teased seeing Kisho twitching but he only leans down to kiss him as he muffled the moans and yet he didn't stop.
When he breaks the kiss, he sees Kisho twitching again with his cries being worse. "Though, you would love that..wouldn't you?" he said against his neck but Kisho couldn't help it that his hands were about to move but Megumi held them down.
"Ahhhhhhh!!! ahhhhh!!!!...f..fuck m..me...fuck me!! Fuck fuck fuck fuck-FUCK!!" He moans wrapping his legs around Itadori's waist.
"Haaaaa so greedy....what do you want now Kisho?" Yuji teased but he looks at him showing a primal expression like his own eyes were glowing.
"Ohhhhh m..more..f.fuck m..me more! Please I w..wanna c..cum! Let me cum!" he begs but Megumi looks to him as he was still being rammed into.
"What was that?" Itadori said snapping his hips forward to stop seeing Kisho shaking as he was panting.
"P..Please......"
"Please..what Kisho?" he said in a low tone but he gulps shaking tightening more around him. Damn that voice was already hitting him.
"...P..Please f..fuck me more...b..break me please......" Hearing this, Yuji smiled to hold his hips pulling him.
"Grrrrr..fine.....I'll break you. I'll break you over and over till you cum non stop." he said now jackhammering into him that he screams looking dazed again.
"AHHHH Y..YESSSS YES PLEASE HARDER! I WANT IT HARDER!!" he begs but Megumi was kissing him to hush him but he only kisses back with Yuji still punishing him. He seriously was a mess but he didn't mind. He tries to stay sane even if his body was throbbing all over. Yuji was a beast in bed but he feels the kiss break panting out moaning that his eyes were hidden.
"Y..Yuji..Yuji....hhaaaa Y..Yuji!!!!!!"
"That's it..just savor it Kisho..let it all come out...." he teased thrusting into him. "That way, you'll feel even better won't you?" he said against his neck but he latches onto it kissing him there but he won't bite him.
"Y..Yes sir..oh god y..yes sir!!" he moans out of it but he felt something burning in his stomach as he throbs like he was going to cum.
"Hmm? He's close...did you wanna cum Kisho?" he asked but he only nods to squirm.
"Y...yes..s..so close! I'm close!" he begs but Yuji smiled still quickening his hips. "Y..Yes right there! I..I wanna cum..I wanna cum......." He only laughed that he suddenly uses his strength to lift him up and hold him in his arms now ramming up as Kisho screams holding onto him. He looks up at the ceiling clawing his back feeling the monster thrusts.
"Then go ahead and cum Kisho..let it out. We wanna see you cum." he growls that Kisho was shaking.
"I...I'm c...cumming..I'm cumming..I..I'm gonna!" as he threw his head back screaming he came violently on himself and Itadori's chest as he clams around him only to cum inside hard. He panted holding his hips down making sure he took every drop as the two were heavily panting sweaty.
Megumi was impressed but he only sees Kisho twitching feeling some of the hot cum dripping out even if he was shaking.
"I think I broke him a bit..but..at least he'll be more fun later tonight for you." he teased Megumi who rolls his eyes to look. However, while holding Kisho his eyes looks to the door and wonders if his guest liked the second show.
In the hallway, jinx was gone but their was a slight puddle there where she stood.
~~~~~~~~Meanwhile at Fin's prison~~~~~~~~~~
Fin was speaking with Winter again to check on her but it seems she was just as quiet as usual. She's been doing something but with the tempting towards him, it was getting harder not to be mad at her.
"For the last time, will you please stop? I only came to check on you and here you are trying to-"
"I said I wasn't doing anything warden..I'm behaving as you said...besides, you keep checking on me meaning you must care hmm?" she giggled that Fin sighed. Yeah, she was just as worse as the other.
"......"
"Or are you here for another reason? Finally give into your urges to have a-"
"No! Look just....I'm here to give you your food for dinner..I'm asking that you stay at the wall and wait till I leave to get it." he said but Winter smiled unsure about that. However, she held her hands up to show she might 'behave'. Seeing this, he goes to unlock the cell and opens it. He walks in with the tray but goes to look at her who looks back.
Both her Cobalt ice blue eyes meets with his cold blue eyes. A lycan and a fallen maiden demon. Almost like a werewolf against a vampire. Ready to rip at each other's throats due to their blood aggravating one another. They said nothing looking to one another but he only looks away trying not to do anything. He sets her food down showing it was just made but he only turns to leave her cell. However, as he did he felt something only to quickly turn showing a ice hatchets that blocks a ice daggers.
"!?" What the fuck was she doing!? "The hell are you-" He feels her ram him against the cell door but she only looks to him as their eyes glow to one another.
"You really are strong..how fun. You really are a strong one~" she purrs to look right at him. Gritting he shoves her back as she rolls on the ground quickly rebounding to see him trying to get out. However, she trips him as he slams against the wall of her prison making him wince. However, he hears something stab into the wall trapping him by the collar of his uniform sleeves. She was sitting on top of his lap looking down at him.
"The hell!? Get off of me!"
"Now now..I won't kill you..your way too much fun to. Besides..I only wanted to say sorry." she pouts in a kid like voice that he glares at her.
"How the hell is this saying sorry! Get the hell off of me!"
"Hmmmm...I will. Though..I would love to give you something in case you wanna play again.." she said.
"The hell are you saying? As the warden I order you to get off of-" However, his words were stopped by her. His eyes widen to feel her soft lips against his own. She kissed him while gripping his uniform. He closed his eyes and closed his hands into fists but he also tasted something like copper that made had her break the kiss. She panted to smile, licking her lips showing she bit him.
"Not bad your one cute kisser." she teased but he only growls to shove her off but gets free from the daggers. He leaves the cell relocking it and leaves quickly. Winter sits there looking at him but she only looks to her fingers then touches her bottom lip. She still tasted some of his blood licking her lip clean slowly.
"Oh my warden..you really are going to be fun to tease..." she giggled. Meanwhile, as Ahmed was heading back from giving Summer her dinner, he spots Fin who was rushing off.
"Fin? Hey! Where are you going?" he asked.
"Just to the office! I just....I need to sit down."
"But we-hold on, are you okay? What happened to your uniform?!" he asked seeing it but Fin said nothing to sigh covering his face.
"It's nothing I......" as he turns to tell him that, he stops noticing that Ahmed was holding his neck. Was he hurt? "Hold on, are you-"
"....Lets just say Summer is a biter.." he said in a cold tone but the two knew they were getting worse. This might be a problem.
~~~~~~Later at dinnertime~~~~~
Finally, the plan was set. Seeing that all the prisoners were eating now. All officers were standing guard or some being on break. Right now, Melinda was sitting with Jaron eating some food while hearing other officers talking about today. It was crazy given the close riot happening but lucky it didn't.
"I'm telling you guys it's true! I think we might need to rethink of a new plan here." one officer said but Jaron blinks to look.
"Maybe but we could always try another way." he said pointing his fork at the other who thinks.
"Well, I think how you persway others works really well. You were able to stop so many random fights thanks to it, officer Jackal." a male officer said but Jaron smiled.
"I don't got a mind for violence but I try to use that more than the violent way." he said as Melinda laughs to agree.
"Knowing you Jaron you always had a good heart. Though, violent never fixes anything even when one tries to cause it. That's why I'm glad to know that you always have that caring side about you." she said that Jaron scratches his cheek blushing a bit.
"Thanks Melinda." he said.
While they were eating, the few prisoners that was able to hide the drug was happily waiting for the plan to work. They said their would be a special desert for everyone but they were seeing the officers talking.
"Are you sure the chef in that kitchen put the drug in her food? It's not working."
"Trust me, it takes a bit to kick in but I made sure he got enough to do it. We just need to wait." he said eating some food as the other prisoners were curious. Would the drugs work? So far, everyone was talking or eating more as the time passes......until Melinda felt off for some reason.
"Hmm?" she held her head but she was confused.
"Hey, you okay?" Jaron asked.
"Yeah..I'm okay. Just a slight headache.." she said smiling to him but he blinks wondering that.
"Huh? But you were fine just now. Did you need one of us to take you to the infirmary?" Haliee said worried.
"No no, I'm fine. I'm sure it will go away on it's own. That and the fact I never eaten breakfast due to the roll call." she said smiling. However, Haliee and Jaron was worried knowing if she was alright she would be. So they left it alone. As Dinner kept going, the headache got worse, that Melinda stops eating to hold her head but now she felt like something was wrong.
"........." Somehow, she felt hot and she didn't know why to make her rest her head against Jaron's shoulder.
"Hmm? Melinda? What's the matter? Are you alright?" he asked worried.
"...I.....I said I'm fine. I just..my headache went away but I...don't feel.." she mutters but he noticed she looked flushed that made the other officers worry. The prisoner that had the drug put in her food smiled. Seems like it worked.
"Heh, time to go gentlemen...do it." he said as one nods before another begins to signal two others. One quickly goes to see the generator of power for the cafeteria before the light went out!
"WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED!"
"IT'S A BLACKOUT!"
Right away, prisoners got up now shouting to start fighting the officers while some others were causing confusion. However, Jaron was looking about with Haliee getting up trying to stop them. Though, that's when a few prisoners quickly attack with one grabbing Melinda who struggles trying to push them away but he picks her up over his shoulder rushing out.
"MELINDA!!" two officers shouted but Jaron noticed.
"HEY, PUT HER DOWN!" he said giving chase but he got through now following after the prisoner that took her. Everywhere was a black out even with two officers trying to get the generator back up. Jaron runs following the prisoner before he sees him make a left turn. Though, in a way, as he did, he looks to see the two were gone.
"Melinda!?...Melinda!!!...Damn it! Where did he go!" he hissed but that's when one shows up behind him and suddenly hits him hard behind the head to knock him out. He passed out before being taken as well.
~~~~~~~Somewhere else~~~~~~
Something splashes against Jaron waking him up with a gasp coughing slightly. He winces from the headache he got and a stinging throbbing pain. With a groan he opens his eyes to blink but his vision was fuzzy. "...What...where.." he looks to move but he couldn't feeling his wrists tied up.
"Well, good to see you can join us.." he looks up quickly hearing a voice but stops seeing who. A prisoner was there but he was smiling. However, that's not what got him worried. He saw another officer but she had her wrists tied up, sitting in the corner but her head was tilted to the side while softly breathing like she was ill. Whatever was going on, something happened that Jaron looks worried to see the prisoner look at him.
"Lets have a little...chat, officer Jackal."
Who Are You?
The first encounter
🖇pairing(s): sunghoon x female reader, jake x female reader, sunghoon x female reader x jake
🖇genre: angst, smut, some fluff
🖇warnings: language, cheating, drug and alcohol usage etc etc
🖇 summary: y/n and sunghoon have been besties since the sandbox days. they eventually fall in love with each other and ultimately start dating. y/n soon meets the foreign exchange student jake, who's from australia, and ends up being his partner for a lab in chemistry. not too long after her encounter with jake, she begins to slowly start to fall for him. she lies to jake about not being in a relationship and secretly meets up with him behind sunghoon's back. sunghoon finds the couple together at a party that y/n lied about being sick, thinking he still wouldn't go without her. she finds herself being confronted by both the boys which resulted in sunghoon and jake leaving her upset and broken, crying on the bathroom floor. she doesn't know who to choose. the boy she has known and loved all her life or the cute aussie boy she met in chem class who makes her feel alive. she does all that she can to try to make things right again.
♠️smut warning in the beginning!!
y/n woke up to her face being smothered in kisses by her boyfriend sunghoon. it's been almost two years since she confessed and started dating the raven haired boy.
she smiled, wrapping her all of her limps around him. "good morning princess. how'd you sleep?" sunghoon asked and he hovered above her. "good since i woke up next to you." she responded, pulling him down for a short but passionate kiss.
sunghoon hummed, before pulling away. he moved a strand of y/n's hair out of her face as he stared lovingly at her. "maybe you should move in and this can be an everyday thing, hm?" he asked.
"maybe i should? plus it's always so lonely at my apartment. winter is always gone with her boyfriend chenle and it's been awhile since me and her hung out one on one." she said, a little frown on her face, causing sunghoon to chuckle and place a chastise kiss on her pout. "maybe try talking to her. tell her how much you miss her. i'm sure things will change and you'll get to spend time with your bestie again."
y/n couldn't help but smile. she was so happy to have a boyfriend so sweet and caring. sometimes it's hard to believe that her best friend since preschool would eventually end up as her boyfriend.
"i'll try to talk to her sometime today at the university. i have my first class with her-" y/n's sentence was soon interrupted by her alarm going off, causing her to jump from the sudden sound.
"guess that means we should get ready and head to school then." sunghoon said before kissing her one last time and heading to his closet. "finna go shower, want to join me?" he asked, grabbing out his neatly ironed uniform at the bottom of the bed. y/n nodded her head, getting out of his bed and took her uniform out of her overnight bag and placed them on his bed alongside with his.
by the time she had gotten all ger things out, sunghoon had already head towards the bathroom at had the shower running.
y/n headed in the direction of the bathroom, walking as sunghoon was undressing himself from the last bit of clothing he had on. she joined him, stripping out her clothes and hopping in the shower right along with him.
he let her stand under the shower head, the warm water pouring down on the both of them. they begin to wash each other. sunghoon let his hand with the sudded up face towel run along her body, lathering up every inch of her, staring into her eyes.
as if some force was upon them, they begin to lean in, connecting their lips together. their lips moved in sync, tongues battling for dominance which resulted in sunghoon winning and earning a whiny moan from y/n.
she wrapped her arms around his neck pulling him close. he grabbed onto the back of her thighs, lifting her up. y/n took the initiative to wrap her legged around his waist as they kissed.
sunghoon trailed his lips down to her neck, sucking and nipping at the skin, leaving marks all along her neck.
y/n felt the tip of his cock rubbing against her ass cheek. "please hoon," she begged. he chuckled and looked at her. "please what?" he asked teasingly. she whined more, hating but also loving it when he does that. "fuck me please," she said softly and hid her face in his neck immediately afterwards, causing another laugh to escape from him lips. "as you wish princess." he said.
not even a moment later, he slammed his member deep inside her. she gasped from the sudded intrusion. he pulled out slowly, leaving just the tip in before thrusting back into her and a good pace to help steady y/n.
she moaned from the pleasure as he accurately hit her spot with each thrust. after a while, sunghoon picked up his speed, thrusting into her hard and deep, making y/n lose her mind.
her moans now turning into incoherent sounds and gasps. she felt that familiar pit in her stomach. "i- i'm gonna-ah~" she came hard as sunghoon pounded into her, fucking her through her orgasm.
he thrusted a few more times before he came undone as well, shooting his warm and thick seed deep inside her.
y/n shook and whined from the feeling of being overstimulated.
sunghoon pulled out, his cum dripping out of her as they both caught their breath. he put y/n down, helping with cleaned his cum out of her and they both finished washing up and headed back into the room to get ready for school.
they quickly got ready, grabbing a snack from his kitchen for the both of them to share as they left his apartment and head out to his car.
y/n decided to just do her makeup on the way to school since they were behind schedule from their shower session that happened. she began covering up the marks on her neck. sunghoon looked over as they were at a stoplight, "why do you always cover them?" he asked, turing his attention back to the road as soon as the light turned green. "because i don't want people in my business and i don't want people knowing what we do behind closed doors." she said and she finished perfecting it and starting on her face.
sunghoon furrowed his brows, glancing at her from the side of his eyes for a bit as he drove. "what's wrong with that? i want people to know that we're together and that you're mine." he spoke honestly, placing his hand on her thighs and rubbing them gently.
y/n smiled, placing her hand onto of his once she finished her makeup.
they arrived at the school and sunghoon parked in his usual spot. they both got out and sunghoon quickly placed a small kiss on her forehead before leaving. "i'll see you later, okay? i have to head to class before mr. lee gets on me for being late again." he said laughing as he walked away.
y/n did the same, heading to her first class which was chemistry and she dreaded it because today she had a lab to do and when the do labs, the teacher always assigns the groups and/or partners.
she walked into class, looking around for her bestfriend winter and to her luck she saw her in the back. she smiled and happily made her way to her.
"hey booo! i missed you!" y/n said as she sat next to the other girl and pulled her into a hug. winter smiled and hugged her back. "i missed you too!" she said, pulling away from the hug and looking at y/n. "you sure about that? you've been spending a lot of time with chenle lately." y/n said, raising her brow and she teased the other girl.
winter scoffed playfully and folded her arms. "as if you haven't been doing the same with sunghoon." she responded. "well you've got me there... but i do miss spending time with you. we need a girl's day out. no boyfriends allowed." y/n said and winter agreed nodding her head. "how about tomorrow since it is the weekend?" winter asked. "yes of course! i'll tell hoon he isn't invited and you tell chenle to kick rocks cause it's only for us girlies." she said and both her and winter bursted out in a fit of giggles.
they calmed down after the professor finally arrived but with an unfamiliar boy at his side.
y/n has never seen this boy before. she turned to winter and to her surprise, witer shared the same look of confusion as her and winter knows everyone on campus.
"hello class. this is our new student. he's from australia and he'll be joining our class today."  the professor said as he introduced the boy to the class. "why don't you tell the class your name and three interesting things about you." the professor added.
the boy in front of that class smile and oh boy did he have a beautiful smile. "of course sir." he said, earning a nod of approval from the professor. "hello everyone. i'm sim jaeyun but i go by jake so please call me that. i'm nineteen years old, i love to play soccer and i love to listen to music but who doesn't?" he said, laughing to himself and gaining a few chuckles and giggles from the class.
y/n laughed as well. he seemed like a cool guy.
the professor had him sit down as he talked about today's lesson. "so today we'll be working in partners again for an upcoming project thats due next month on the 16th." the class verbally sighed out loud. "well don't get too excited now." he stated sarcastically. "I've already picked that partners. once i call you and your partners name, please get together and begin discussing on what you'll be doing" he added.
one by one he called people names. winter was partnered up with beomgyu and it kind of made y/n made since she hoped that by chance she'd be partners with her bestie for once. "jake and y/n. y/n raise your hand for jake to see please." the professor said.
y/n did as she was told, raising her hand up. jake looked back and noticed her. they made eye contact and y/n completely froze up. he smiled, making his way over to the seat next to her. "y/n right?" he asked, placing his bag down. she nodded, shyly looking at him. "cute name. i'm jake." he said, holding his hand out. y/n looked down at his hand for a moment. "don't be shy, i don't bite. unless you want me too." he joked and winked at her. y/n giggled, taking his hand in hers and shaking it.
his hands were a bit rough and calloused and he held a firm grip. "so what should we do for this project?" he asked. "uhh i'm not quite sure if i'm being honest." she stated once they realsed each other's hands.
jake reached in his bag, grabbing out his laptop and notebook along with something to write with. "how about do some searching and hopefully we'll come across something that piques our interest, that sounds good?" he asked and y/n nodded. he placed the laptop in between them, and they both searched for loads of things before finally deciding on something. jake took the initiative to jot down some notes that they could use and hopefully get some information to proceed with the project.
after sometime the professor spoke, gaining everyone's attention. "okay class is about to end a few minutes so lets wrap this up and you guys can leave. class is dismissed."
everyone started packing up there things.  y/n watched as winter walked out thr classroom, talking up a storm with beomgyu, her partner.  she shook her head at the fact that her friend didn't even wait for her.
she packed up her things up and was going to leave to catch up with winter but was stopped by a hand holding onto her arm. she turned around to see that it was jake. she felt her face get hot from.the contact and how close he was. he looked even better up close. his brown eyes staring down at her through his fluffy looking bangs.
"sorry i don't mean to hold you back but i was wondering if i can have your number? we'll need to make plans to actually meet up and get this project done." he said, letting go of her arm and handing his phone over to her. "oh uh yes of course" she said, grabbing his phone and quickly adding her number. "thank you. i'll text you sometime later on." he said, flashing her a smile that gave her a weird sense of butterflies in her stomach before he walked off.
she shook off that weird feeling and decided to head to her next class.
Mmm... what about Lambert trying to impress his crush with a thoughtful birthday or Christmas present? (It doesn't really have to be christmasy I just remembered where in that time of the year), but he sorta struggles to find the right moment to give it to them since he doesn't really want everyone to see him being vulnerable :)
A/N: As we all know, I’ve been shit at writing lately but RDR2 has me fucking up and I’ve gotta distract myself from that for a sec so this is what happened when I did that. I hope you like this babe!! And I’m sorry it took so long!!
***
Lambert groaned, running a hand over his face. He sat at a table in the library as he gave himself a pep talk.
Just try one more time, Lambert. One more time to give Y/N the stupid gift and if it doesn’t work out, then maybe it’s the Universe saying Y/N wouldn’t like the gift.
He let out a sigh and put his head down on the table.
The young wolf had tried three times already today to give you a gift he bought while in Novigrad, but each time he was interrupted.
First, it was Ciri barging in to tell him how she had mastered working two daggers and begging him to come watch her. Then it was Eskel and Jaskier walking into the room and not leaving. Then it was Jaskier being too nosey and friendly for his own good and just lingering in the room.
Lambert sat up and rubbed his face again.
It was a stupid idea to spend money on a stupid gift that you probably wouldn’t like anyways. You wouldn’t feel the same way about him, not about a witcher. You were too good for a witcher, for a beast like him.
It was a stupid and childish idea that Eskel had fed into last winter when Lambert confessed to Eskel in a slightly drunken stupor that he harbored feelings for you. He wasn’t even that drunk, Eskel was just easy to talk to. It was Eskel who suggested a small gift to start the courting process, to get an understanding of your feelings towards Lambert.
But now Lambert had the stupid gift so he had no choice but to give it to you, right?
“Damn it, wolf.” Lambert cursed to himself, hitting his fist against the table. Now was the time to do it. He just had to get it over with before the anxiety ate him up inside.
***
He found you in the kitchen with Eskel and Vesemir.
“Y/N?”
You turned your head and looked at him. The way your face lit up and a smile tugged at the corners of your lips didn’t go unnoticed by him.
The two of you had flirted and shared rather intimate nonsexual moments here and there over the last year, but nothing had ever come of it. Neither of you had taken the next step in the relationship. Every time Lambert thought he was ready to do so, he would chicken out at the last minute, allowing all of the negative thoughts and voices in his head to tell him it would end badly, that there was no reason to even try.
“Can I, uh, talk to you for a second?” He rubbed the side of his neck.
“Of course.” You nodded, standing from the table.
You followed him for quite some time down the maze of hallways until it seemed like you were at a dead end.
“Lambert, where in the world are you taking me?”
Silently, he dug his hand into his pocket and pulled out a sachet.
“Here.” He placed the dark blue velvet in your hand and turned to walk away. He wasn’t prepared for your reaction, for your rejection. But he only managed to get a few paces past you before your hand clasped the back of his doublet.
“Hold on just a second.”
“Y/N, really, it isn’t a big deal. Just saw the stupid thing in Novigrad and thought you’d like it. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got a den of drowners-,”
“Lambert.” You cut him off, your voice soft and tender.
The way you said his name was so sweet he swore it could make him sick if you said it too much.
You pulled the necklace from the sachet and admired it, a smile tugging at the corners of your lips. A tear drop sapphire hung from a golden chain.
“Oh, Lambert. It’s…. It’s absolutely beautiful.”
“It’s nothing.” He muttered, stuffing his hands into his pockets.
“Will you help me put it on?” You asked him.
“You…. You’ll wear it?” Lambert furrowed his brows together.
“Of course.” You looked up at him. “Isn’t that what you’re supposed to do with a necklace?”
He rolled his eyes, taking the necklace from you.
“Turn around, smart ass.”
You turned around so that your back was to him.
“Has this been what’s been making you act silly all day?” You asked quietly, turning your head to the side as he clasped the chain together.
“Didn’t know when the best time to give it to you was.” He muttered, crossing his arms over his chest as you turned back to face him.
“Well, I think it would’ve been perfectly fine had you given it to me in front of everyone.” You placed your hand on his arm and leaned in to kiss his cheek. “I think it’s absolutely gorgeous, Lambert. Thank you.”
As you moved to walk down the hall, you missed the rosy pink that came to Lambert’s cheeks. He watched you for a few moments, then scrunched his nose up and followed you.
part 10 of the Nomad Nie AU // On AO3
Huaisang has a surprise for his husband, who tries to surprise him in return
It took nearly another week after Cunzhi’s little adventure before the Nie finally arrived at their winter camp. The entire time, Nie Huaisang stuck close to his husband, in case Lan Xichen had developed a taste for confronting wolves unarmed and needed to be stopped. Lan Xichen was both amused and touched by this, and didn’t complain.
He thought that Khan Mingjue too seemed rather entertained by this turn of events, and acted perhaps a little less angry toward him these days. When they arrived at the winter camp, Lan Xichen was bossed around by the Khan just the same way as everyone else as they rebuilt the gers, and he was trusted with helping Huaisang and a few others check whether any of the animals had sustained wounds during the long journey. He also was a little warmer when the three of them retired for the night, and constantly teased him about the wolf. This greatly annoyed Huaisang, which seemed to be the aim, but Lan Xichen found he rather enjoyed the Khan’s dry humour. It reminded him of Lan Wangji.
When they reached the place they would spend the winter, it took very little time to set everything up, at least in Lan Xichen’s opinion. In less than a day, there was a whole village standing, looking exactly as if it had always been there. The herds were then separated, which led to a few small disputes here and there. The Khan ordered his brother and Zonghui to take care of those if they could. As for himself, Mingjue was only giving the horses a chance to rest a little, and then he would head with a few men toward the other camp, to make sure that everything was alright with them.
Mingjue left early the next morning, just as Lan Xichen was starting to wake up. He groggily bid his brother-in-law a safe trip, then decided it was really too early to be up yet and tried to pull Huaisang back under the covers with him to cuddle for a while. Huaisang indulged him at first, but before long he was escaping to eat something, saying he had a busy day ahead. He was clearly very proud of having been tasked with helping settle any disputes that might have arisen due to the migration, and refused to let his brother down when Mingjue was finally trusting him with something.
Any hope Lan Xichen might still have had about a quiet morning together was fully ruined when Meng Yao came to check on them. Huaisang and Lan Xichen were still having breakfast, but invited him to sit with them if he wished and share their meal. Lan Xichen was delighted to see his friend, as always. So was Huaisang, though he still left before long, eager for this chance to prove how very useful and mature he could be.
“We’ll chat later,” Nie Huaisang said in Hanyu, his accent much better than it used to be. “Keep my husband company, Menyao. Make sure he does nothing stupid. No more wolves for him!”
Meng Yao laughed, and promised to keep an eye on Lan Xichen. Satisfied with this, Huaisang dropped a quick kiss on his husband’s forehead and hopped out of the ger. Lan Xichen watched him go, unable to refrain a fond smile as he passed some cheese to Meng Yao.
“Do you think he minds that we are friends?” Meng Yao asked as he took the food.
Lan Xichen shot him a surprised look. “Of course not. Why would he?”
Meng Yao appeared to hesitate, the way he sometimes did when he feared he had some unpleasant information to share. He stalled a moment, nibbling on his piece of cheese, before diving in.
“These barbarians can be rather possessive,” he explained. “And I am right in guessing you are still refusing him his marital rights, are you not?”
Lan Xichen nodded and looked away, heat rushing to his face. It really wasn’t a matter of refusing anything at this point, and just that the occasion for it couldn’t be found. With Nie Mingjue gone for a few days, Lan Xichen was hoping they’d seize their chance at last… but of course he couldn’t have said that to Meng Yao, it was too private a matter.
“Huaisang is much sweeter than the others,” Meng Yao said, “but even he could get jealous. Lan gongzi should keep that in mind, and tell me if I create problems for him.” He sighed, his expression pained. “Lan gongzi is dear to me, but I will distance myself if it is needed. I do not want to provoke Huaisang into anger.”
Lan Xichen laughed awkwardly, and drank to hide his embarrassment.
“It’s fine, it’s quite fine,” he said. “Huaisang doesn’t mind at all. You’re his friend too, in spite of his brother.”
Meng Yao looked unconvinced. “These people will turn on their friends over anything. Even among brothers there is strife sometimes. If Huaisang weren’t so indolent, he would probably have been killed a long while ago, just so he wouldn’t pose a threat to the Khan’s power. Their grandfather killed his own father for power, it runs in their blood. So please, be careful, and tell me if I can ever do anything for you. You’re the only true friend I have, I don’t want for any harm to come to you.”
The story of Huaisang’s grandfather wasn’t unknown to Lan Xichen. Huaisang had told it to him, not without some pride, because the murdered father had been a cruel man who abused people and animals alike. Mingjue, who had been with them in the ger, had added that an unjust Khan could not be allowed to rule, and he would expect the same if he took a turn for the worse.
It had disturbed Lan Xichen at first, that anyone could talk so lightly of killing one’s father, one’s superior. In the end, he figured that perhaps the Nie too had a version of the Mandate of Heaven at play, and that Huaisang’s great-grandfather had lost heaven’s favour with his misconduct.
“I’m glad Meng gongzi feels this way,” Lan Xichen said. “I also see you as a true friend. If you had not been here to help me, I don’t know what I would have done. And I hope you know that I would be happy to help you as well, should you ever require it.” He hesitated a moment, then added: “For example if there might be a way to mend things between you and the Khan…”
Meng Yao failed to contain a slight grimace, and shook his head.
“No, the chance for that has passed,” he sighed. “He hates me too much now, and is too ready to blame me for everything that goes wrong in the clan. I’m sure he blames me for what happened with Cunzhi too, wouldn’t you say?”
Lan Xichen, quite awkwardly, didn’t know what to answer.
It wasn’t that Meng Yao had caused that situation on purpose, of course. Still, Lan Xichen had become quite convinced that Cunzhi had escaped his mother’s care and hidden this way specifically because he had been so upset at losing Meng Yao’s company, and somehow hoped that making his displeasure obvious enough would allow him to get his way. It was likely that Khan Mingjue had come to the same conclusion, but was less kind with regards to Meng Yao’s intentions in that situation.
“Misunderstandings have happened in the past,” Lan Xichen said at last. “They can be corrected. I’m sure there must be ways to let the Khan see that you’ve never had ill intentions, only bad luck.”
“You think too kindly of the Khan,” Meng Yao scoffed.
And you think too ill of him, Lan Xichen thought with some disappointment.
Khan Mingjue could be somewhat unreasonable when worrying for his brother, but even in his dislike he wasn’t unjust. He treated Meng Yao coldly and refused to deal with him more than necessary, but he didn’t go out of his way to be cruel to him, nor did he allow for him to be treated poorly by others. Aside from Huaisang, nobody was forbidden from associating with him. Lan Xichen was certain that if both parties had only made a small effort, they could have reconciled and returned to the friendship Huaisang told him used to exist between them. At first he’d thought all the efforts would have to come from the Khan, but he now saw that Meng Yao too would have to be a little more forgiving.
It would take time, Lan Xichen knew, and no small amount of work.
“It’s fine anyway,” Meng Yao insisted, chewing on the last of his cheese. “I’m only biding my time until I can go home. I know someday my father will return for me, just as you must hope your family will do. When my father comes to get me back, it won’t matter much what the Khan thinks of me.”
The barely restrained fierceness in Meng Yao’s voice surprised Lan Xichen. His friend rarely spoke of his father, or indeed of anything about his life before joining the Nie. Lan Xichen was under the impression he had perhaps been less well treated in their home country than he was among nomads. From some of the things he said, Lan Xichen suspected that Meng Yao was either the child of a concubine or a servant who had been noticed for his intelligence and given an education, but never treated as truly part of the family. If so, it was unlikely that his father would ever bother to attempt to buy him back from the Nie, not the way Lan Xichen thought his own family might attempt once they’d built enough of a fortune with this new trade route opened to them.
It wouldn’t be for a few years at best, but Lan Xichen was unsure what he’d do if this happened. Of course he missed his home and family no less than Meng Yao did, yet he wouldn’t want to leave Huaisang behind. But it might be a pointless question anyway. Meng Yao might hope for his father’s return, Lan Qiren might attempt to buy back his nephew, but Khan Mingjue probably wouldn’t want to let anyone go who knew too much about his people.
Overtaken by a mild melancholy, Lan Xichen changed the topic and quickly finished eating so Meng Yao and him could go out and take care of their chores. Busy hands helped him empty his mind, though his mood remained a little off all morning. It was only when he returned to the ger for lunch that he started feeling better again, knowing he would see Huaisang.
Just as he had hoped, Lan Xichen found himself smiling happily as he entered the ger and started preparing for lunch. That smile only widened when Huaisang finally joined him, holding a bowl of dumplings in one hand, and carrying a dark wooden box under his other arm. The dumplings were carefully set aside, and the box presented to Lan Xichen.
“It’s for you!” Huaisang announced. “A gift for my husband.”
Lan Xichen glanced at the box, then at Huaisang’s excited face.
“Where did you get this?”
“I made a trade with old Xianjun,” Huaisang explained, handing the box to his husband. “Foals for three of his mares from my best racing stallion in spring, and he gave me this. It’s a Han thing, right?”
Inspecting the box more closely confirmed it was of Han origin. Its style had a southern flair to it, and Lan Xichen wondered how it had arrived so far north. It wasn’t a luxurious box, a little rough here and there, but still beautiful and made with obvious care by a competent artisan, and seeing this trace from home tugged at his heart. To distract himself from this renewed melancholy Lan Xichen opened the box while Huaisang peered curiously over his shoulder.
Lan Xichen gasped.
“Is it bad?” Huaisang asked, a note of worry in his voice.
“It’s very good,” Lan Xichen replied, sitting down to more comfortably admire his present. “Why did they have this?”
Huaisang chuckled nervously. “Old Xianjun followed my father on a raid against Han people when he was young,” he admitted. “He traded away many things, kept a few. Nobody wanted this and he found it pretty, so he kept it. What is it?”
“The four treasures of the study,” Lan Xichen said, only to be met with a blank look. “Ah, hm. It is used to write things, like in my books?”
Among Lan Xichen’s few possessions when he arrived with the Nie had been two books he’d taken with him. A caprice, his uncle had called it when they were getting to leave home, telling him he wouldn’t have any use for poetry, nor for that short history treaty he’d picked up some weeks earlier and never made time to study. A few months later and he knew those books by heart, as did Meng Yao who had nearly cried from joy upon being allowed to borrow them. As for Huaisang, he showed little interest in the books themselves, but enjoyed having the poetry read to him and explained, and he liked also the few printed illustrations.
“You can make a book with this?” Huaisang asked, looking doubtful.
“If I had something to say. I could also paint something,” Lan Xichen suggested, guessing that might amuse his husband more. The paper was of good enough quality that its age hadn’t made it too fragile, and the ink still seemed good at well. The inkstone was intact, its square shape simple but elegant. Only the pair of brushes wasn’t perfectly to Lan Xichen’s liking, since they were clearly made for writing rather than painting, but their quality was good, and his skill wasn’t high enough that the wrong tool would really hinder him.
“Paint something for me!” Huaisang predictably demanded, eyeing the box’s content with more interest now.
“Gladly. What should I paint?”
Huaisang barely hesitated. “Something you would miss if you went home.”
Hearing this, Lan Xichen’s smile faltered. It seemed he really couldn’t avoid thinking of home that day. At the same time, this had the advantage of being an easy request to fulfil, because there was only one thing he could think of painting after being asked this.
“I will do that. But it has to be a surprise. You can’t look at it until it’s done, Huaisang.”
“But I want to see how you do it!”
“After this, I teach you how to paint,” Lan Xichen offered. There were about three dozen sheets of paper in the box, which didn’t feel like much, but it would be enough. He’d just have to ask his family to bring him more next time he saw them. “This one will be a gift for you, so you can’t see.”
Huaisang went from pouting to grinning in an instant. Lan Xichen took a moment more to admire his own gift, then closed the box and asked his husband about his morning. They sat down and ate together, chatting about this and that, making plans for the rest of the day. When they were done with food, Lan Xichen took his box and started carefully preparing some paper and ink. Huaisang watched with fascination the process of grinding ink, asking questions about it that Lan Xichen answered as well as he could. Once he started actually painting, Huaisang was chased away to the other side of the ger where he worked for a while with leather.
Lan Xichen found it quite nice to be together like this, each of them occupied with their own work, occasionally trading a few words, but mostly silent and focused on what they were doing. He had never expected that it would be so comfortable to be in someone else’s company this way, least of all under such circumstances, but it made him glad once more than Huaisang and him had been brought together. Fate had really found him a perfect partner.
All too soon though, this moment of peace was interrupted. Someone came to ask Huaisang to help them with a dispute regarding cattle, and Lan Xichen had his own chores to attend. They both put away their work and went out, knowing they would meet again for dinner.
When afternoon reached its end, Xichen returned to the ger and found it empty. After tidying a bit, he took this chance and went back to working on his painting. It was no masterpiece, not when he had never received the education to create great works and hadn't touched a brush in months, but Lan Xichen was still happy enough with his work. He was putting the finishing touches when Huaisang returned, dusted with snow that had started falling, and carrying again some food.
"Can I see soon?" Huaisang asked, staring toward the sheet of paper but keeping his distance, as he'd been asked.
The painting wasn’t quite done, there were a few details to add, but Huaisang’s barely contained curiosity was too adorable. Lan Xichen motioned for his husband to come closer, which Huaisang immediately obeyed, rushing to his side and dropping on his knees right next to him.
“Here it is,” Lan Xichen announced, revealing the painting and handing it to Huaisang.
Just as he had hoped, Huaisang’s initially excited expression quickly turned to astonishment as he discovered that on the paper was a portrait of himself, painted as faithfully as Lan Xichen’s skill would allow. Huaisang’s face took on a very sweet pinkish hue that grew more intense the longer he gazed at the portrait, while his eyes shone with emotion.
“Something you would miss,” he mumbled, tearing his eyes from the painting to look at Lan Xichen. “Really?”
“Really,” Xichen said, putting away his brush in its proper place, telling himself he would clean it in a moment. First, though, he needed to kiss his husband. Huaisang, seeing him lean closer, hurriedly set aside the painting and threw his arms around Lan Xichen’s neck.
It wasn’t rare these days for the two of them to get passionate while kissing, and like many times before, Huaisang quickly ended up straddling Lan Xichen’s lap as he licked into his mouth, his hands wandering under the layers of his husband’s clothes. Usually that was the moment Mingjue would pick to come home and glare at them, but…
But Mingjue wasn’t there at all this time, and at this time of day nobody would come looking for them. So Lan Xichen let himself fall back on the carpeted ground, and looked up at Huaisang, still straddling him.
Huaisang let out a strangled noise, but didn’t move. “Do you want…”
Lan Xichen quickly nodded. However much it had once terrified him to be wanted by Huaisang, he’d more than made his peace with it, his desire now matching his husband’s. There was no one else in the world he could imagine wanting as much as he wanted Huaisang, no one he would trust as much.
That nod was all the invitation Huaisang needed. He leaned down to kiss Lan Xichen with renewed passion, clumsily trying to untie his husband’s clothes while Lan Xichen did the same for him.
It was, to put it mildly, a fun night for both of them.
Twice: Confessing + being rejected
Jihyo
Tumblr media
Jihyo and you would have always been really, really good friends. You guys would've met when you were around 12 and have been inseparable ever since. Once college came around you were glad you were accepted into the same one. You loved your friendship and you obviously loved Jihyo too, but you loved her like a sister. Once winter came around and exam season started you both didn't really have time to do anything besides studying but you still were able to meet occasionally and just talk about everything that's happening in your lifes, it was always really casual and easy between the both of you, but today would seem different to you. Jihyo would be weirdly nervous and looking at everyone and everything except for you. After a while you'd simply just ask her what's going on. You would be worried that she'd put too much pressure onto herself due to the exams. "Don't stress yourself Jihyo... it's gonna be okay!", you'd simply say after she wouldn't answer you, you would take her hand like you'd always do and that would be the moment she'd look up into your eyes with an expression on her face you couldn't really define but it made your heart sink. "It's... I'm not nervous because of the exams...", her voice would be shaky as if she was freezing right now. "What is it then?", you'd ask her unknowingly which would make her sigh and close her eyes. "I have to tell you something y/n... lately I've come to the conclusion that I just can't keep it in anymore, I have to get this out of my system no matter what, no matter the consequences.. maybe you'll hate me but-" "I could never hate you Jihyo... please tell me, is it this bad?", you'd ask her, completely confused, what could your best friend do to make you hate her? She takes a deep, shaky breath and opens her eyes again, looking at you as if you were the only person in the café. "I'm in love with you and I'm sorry.", she'd finally say with a rather steady voice which surprised you, but after realizing what she said you'd be completely shocked. Due to the shock you would let go of her hand which would make her whole expression change. Her rather nervous and kinda hopeful expression would change into a sad and broken one. "Jihyo I-" "it's okay! I'm sorry, haha...", she'd interrupt you, quickly shaking her head and standing up while putting her stuff into her bag with shaky fingers and tears in her eyes. She tried to overplay her obvious sadness with a smile on her face like she always would do, but you know her. "I'm sorry Jihyo... You're just.. I love you as a friend..." "I know, I-i know.. it was ridiculous of me to think you might want me too...", she'd say with a shaky voice, still with a smile on her face while trying her best not to cry. She would quickly turn around wanting to leave the place as fast as possible. "We're... we're still friends, right?", you'd ask her while holding onto her hand again to stop her from moving which would make her flinch slightly. "Uhm... yeah, of course..", she'd whisper, not looking back and letting go of your hand.
Nayeon
Tumblr media
You would be in the cafeteria with your friends just eating lunch and studying for some midterms when something, or rather someone would grab your attention. A few feets away from you would be a group of friends talking quite energetic about probably something really interesting, there was one girl that grabbed your attention the most tho, Nayeon. The pretty girl was in your Maths class and you have talked to her occasionally, small talk and just general school stuff, saying you'd know her wouldn't be the right thing to say tho. The reason the girl grabbed your attention wasn't really her undeniable beautyful face but rather the way everyone was talking to her and basically circling her. The group of girls would occasionally look in your direction but you wouldn't really understand what was going on so you'd just continue eating your sandwich as if nothing is happening. After a while you'd look up to the group once again just to see Nayeon walking towards you slowly with hesitation. You'd frown a little bit at first but the smile politely at her when she would arrive in front of you. She shyly would put her hair behind her ear and smile at you too. "Hello!" "Hi!", you guys would talk a little bit before Nayeon would finally take a deep breath and start talking about what she actually wanted to talk about. "Look... I know we don't know each other that well but, well, I kinda have a crush on you?", she would say with determination on her face to finally bring that out, hope in her eyes and a smile on her face. You would be shocked for a few seconds, not really knowing how to react but after some seconds which were filled with the slowly creeping awkwardness you'd look at her with an expression which slowly made her understand. "Nayeon, I-" "it's okay! Totally okay! Definitely! Sorry, I didn't want to bother you!" "You didn-" "it's okay! Have a nice day!", she would then fastly walk away from you, still with a smile on her face but also obviously sad and close to her tears. The expression in her face actually made you feel horrible, so you'd want to go after her but her friends were faster and followed her to comfort her. You'd see her around the whole day, she would try to not look into your direction at all but you'd clearly see the hurt expression and her eyes which gave away that she's been crying.
Jeongyeon
Tumblr media
To be that nervous like Jeongyeon was right now, wasn‘t usual for the confident, mature girl. Until now she just enjoyed talking to you about the most random things in the middle of the afternoon when she finally had time for something else than work. She loved the way you laughed, told jokes, got embarrassed about it. How your cheeks blush. Just how you seem to care for her. That night, you were both in bed, there was something new to her feelings. She wanted more, more than what you had now. She wanted you to be hers. „Y/n?“ „Yes?“, suddenly, her heart skipped a beat and she fisted the blanket. Was it so hard? „Do you want a deeper relationship? Like, two lovers?“, it was silent for a while and the longer the pause got, the more she realized the truth. „I...maybe it‘s too early, don‘t you think? I‘m not ready yet“, there was a shaking tone in your voice, you were scared you upset her but she quickly grabbed your hand and leaned against you. „It‘s okay, no pressure. But know that I‘ll be waiting.“
Momo
Tumblr media
You and Momo would be in the same dance class together and you actually got along pretty well. She would be really nice to basically everyone and also the other way around, she's just so lovable, people just had to love her. She would be especially nice to you tho, she would always make sure to fill up your bottle and to bring you some snacks too. She would also compliment you on your dancing and never miss a chance to talk to you for some time after practice. All your friends would tell you that she definitely had some feelings for you but you'd just ignore those rumours since you genuinely thought that she was just like that, so you didn't think much of it. One day she would be extra nice to you the whole day and even walk with you to your bus station, the whole way there she would be quite nervous and much more fast paced than normally so you'd be kinda confused about the whole situation. Once you arrived at your station you still had about 3 minutes left until your bus would come. You would just laugh at some jokes she would be making and listen to her rambling as you look into her eyes. After a while she would become even more visibly nervous which would make you finally stop her rambling. "Momo, why are you so nervous? It's just me!", you'd just say with a smile on your face which would make ger fall silent for a while until she would continue. "You.. you make me kinda nervous y/n..." "why?", you'd look at her confused now which would make her sigh slightly and look away from you. "Isn't that obvious at this point?", she would ask quietly. You thought for a while and then frowned a little, were the rumours true? "Wait.. do you.. do you like me?", you'd ask her quietly too while still looking at her. She wouldn't answer you but just look at her hands while playing with them which showed how nervous she still was. "Momo, look, I really like you..", you would slowly start your sentence and you'd be interrupted by her eyes which met yours, they would be full of hope which made what you were about to say even harder. ".. but I don't like you that way, you know?", you'd basically see her whole exoression change once again and her eyes which were before filled with hope were now filled with sadness and disappointment. "But I still like you and appreciate you as a friend!" "Y-yeah, yeah I know.. it was ridiculous of me to think that you might actually like me back.." "Momo, no look-" "Your bus is here, you should get in" "Please, I don't wanna leave you here while you're still sad" "Get in the bus, please..", she would seem tired of the whole situation and also kind of humiliated in a way which would make you feel even more sorry but you'd get onto the bus after seeing how serious she was. Once you were in the bus you'd just see her sitting there at the bus station with an empty gaze and you'd hope that the next day, she won't feel as bad. (She would still continue being nice to you and complimenting you, but due to the now bitter rather than sweet taste which her words carried, really made you feel bad than good, but you in a way thought that you kinda deserved it)
Sana
Tumblr media
Sana and you would have been working at the same café for a long time and actually got along pretty well, she would often cover shifts for you and you'd also get to work together more with her than anyone else in the team which would actually make you happy, since she really was an adorable and funny human being you enjoyed having around. Between Espressos and Americanos you guys were able to become something people would consider as close collegues and you liked it that way. Sana would be really popular amongst the customers since she was really pretty and charming so she would get hit on a lot which would always make you laugh slightly but also protect her from the sometimes creepy men that were coming in. She would always be thankful and make sure to bring you some chocolate the next time you'd work together. Eventually Sana got a little clingier towards you, which you didn't really mind but you were questioning her actions towards you a lot, did she maybe catch feels for you? You didn't really want to think of that and took it rather as a cute gesture and friendship she tried to built with you, you just hoped that she wouldn't actually make a move on you since you were in a new relationship and didn't want things to get awkward so you'd decide to tell Sana about your new relationship just to make sure you guys were on a common ground when it comes to your feelings. One day you guys were behind the counter cleaning up the coffeemaker together while there weren't too many customers and it was a pretty chill day. You were joking around occasionally when suddenly you'd hear your name being called by a familiar voice. You'd turn around confused and would be met by the bright smile of your s/o, you'd immediately return the smile and hug them tightly. They wouldn't have lots of time so you guys just talked for a little bit before they left you again after they softly pecked your lips. You would smile brightly while turning back to cleaning the coffeemaker not really noticing Sana's sudden mood change. "So... you're in a relationship?", she would ask after a while which wouldmake you look at her. "Oh, yeah! I forgot to tell you!", you'd simply say which would make her nod slightly. The whole day long she would then ignore you as much as she can or just answer you shortly. Once it was time to close the café and clean up the whole place you were left alone and you decided to confront her about her behaviour. "Sana? Did I do something or?" "No" "Are you sure?" "Yes" "... are you mad because of my partner?", you'd finally ask, you assumed it before but you were hoping that it wasn't really that, she wouldn't reply at all but simply continue cleaning. "Sana, come on, talk to me.." "I have nothing to say, it's obvious, you don't like me that way and it's okay.", she would say, surprisingly cold which would shock you for a second, she didn't openly seem really fazed but you knew she was deeply hurt. You didn't know what to say so you just continued cleaning up quietly next to her. After some quick goodbyes you parted ways. After that day you'd see her less and less, she wouldn't cover your shifts anymore and barely talk to you, you were sad about losing a precious friend, but you knew she needed the distance.
Mina
Tumblr media
Mina usually was a pretty calm, rational thinking person that could talk to you about everything, even if it was the dumbest or most random thing or idea ever. You had plenty of text messages that were from the middle of the night. And now? Mina was lying in her bed, just had come home from your place where you had been hanging out all day, eating popcorn and watching movies while chatting about everything. A smile appeared on Mina‘s lips when she thought about the way you were crunching your nose and closing your eyes tightly whenever you had to laugh loudly. You then would clap and move your feet in a cute way. Ugh, how Mina loved the little things about you. But also the way you could always listen to what she wanted to tell you, how she was such a good listener and advice-giver. The way you were looking at her with so much interest and care. She felt safe and welcome when you were around her, a feeling that nobody else ever made her feel but you. It made her realize that she wanted to share another thing with you tonight. A thing she carried on her tongue for a while now but just couldn‘t bring herself to actually saying the words out loud, at least not in your presence. Frustrated, Mina watched the clock: 02:31am. She couldn‘t sleep and she knew that she wouldn‘t until you knew her secret. She then took out her phone and typed in your name, going to the chat. „Hey“, she typed and widened her eyes when you texted immediately back. „Hey :) What‘s up?“ What should she say? How should she say it? „Uhm..can I tell you something completely random?“ „Shoot!“ „I love...you?“ After clicking the send button, Mina‘s heart stopped beating. Oh god, it was out. Finally. She could hear her loud breathing, she was beyond nervous. 2 minutes, 5 minutes, 16 minutes passed after you had sent the message. You knew that she had read it. Suddenly, her screen was glowing but the words were going to break Mina‘s tension. „Mina you know I love you too...but definetely in a more than friendship-way. Is this awkward now? I hope you still wanna be friends?“ „Sure, of course! Don‘t mind what I said, actually. It‘s fine!“
Dahyun
Tumblr media
„Thank you so much for coming over, I really need a good grade in this maths exam“, your brother told Dahyun and let her in your house. Your brother and her would be in the same class and have been friends since you three used to play together as a child. Dahyun followed him through the haqll in direction of his room when suddenly Dahyun‘s eyes were busy with something else. She couldn‘t help but peek in your room, you on the bed with your laptop and headphones on. Everytime when she was around you, she got those lightly blushed cheeks. „Hey!“, she didn‘t realize that she actually stared at you until you called her and flashed your smile at the overwhelmed girl. Your brother sighed and went to his room, he‘d wait until you two girls would be done talking. Hesitating, she came into your room, her hands playing with the shirt as she sat down on your bed, eyes immediately on you. „H-hi“, she could barely speak confidently, it was so hard not to panic when she was around you. Ever since she realised her deep feelings for you, she was aftaid of rejection, what if you didn‘t want her around anymore? What if you laughed? You definetely saw the concern on Dahyun‘s face. „What‘s wrong?“, how should she start? „I h-have to tell you something. Remember those times, we three, friends for life?“, you were confused but laughed. „Yes, what about it? Are we not friends anymore?“ „W-we are but something changed, I....feel more for-“ „No way, you have a crush on my brother!“, you gasped while Dahyun‘s eyes widened. No. „That‘s why you hang out here so much! Aww i love this!“ „No“, Dahyun interrupted you and was nearly crying. „It‘s you. I love you.“ The silence was thick and was soon a sign for her, Dahyun knew the answer. „But...we‘re friends..“ „I know, i know, this was stupid, sorry for this...Uhm I‘ll go, have to study“, she stood up from the bed, wiping her face and faking a smile which was hard to hold. She laughed through the pain in her chest. „It‘s fine! Really, it was stupid of me to bring that up...“
Chaeyoung
Tumblr media
You would be in school at your locker trying to menage to transfer all your books from your bag to the inside of your locker without dropping too many onto the ground when you'd suddenly feel someone slightly tap your shoulder. You would simply let out a 'hm?' while you were still focused on your books and locker. You'd hear a girl voice behind you saying things but due to your locker which was taking up your whole attention you weren't properly able to catch any sort of proper words or sentences. Once you finished that really difficult task you turned around and faced the rather small girl in front of you. "Oh sorry, I didn't hear you, could you repeat what you said?", you'd ask her with a smile on your face while you scanned her quickly to see if you recognized her. You didn't really know the girl in front of you, you knew that you bumped into her once or twice and that she once helped you carry a massive amount of books into the school library but other than that you didn't really know her neither her name. "Oh... I'm okay I-" "Wait, what's your name again?", you'd ask her while closing your locker, once you faced her again you'd see how much she had actually blushed and how nervous she was which made you feel a little bit bad, you really should have remembered her name. "Uh.. I'm.. I'm Chaeyoung!", she'd say hesitatingly which would make you nod. "Yeah! Right! Exactly! Sorry, I totally forgot? So, what's up!", you'd lean against your locker and look at her with curiousity in your eyes. "Ah.. nevermind, it doesn't matter..", she'd say after a while but you simply shook your head. "No, no, tell me! Now you made me curious!", you'd say with a grin on your face which would make her look away from you. "I-" "I mean you obviously don't have to tell me anything if you don't feel comfortable, but I'm a really curious person and I-" "Ihaveacrushonyou", you would look at her with a confused expression, you didn't properly understand her since she talked really quietly and fastly. "Sorry, again?", you'd look at her while her cheeks were basically burning and taking the color of tomatoes. "I have a crush on you...", she'd say, still quietly but now a little slower so you were able to finally understand her. Since that wasn't really anything you expected to hear you fell silent for a few seconds until you spoke up. "Oh..." "I feel so stupid.." "No! No, no, please don't, it's really cute of you! It's adorable I just...", you weren't able to find the right words so you just looked into her eyes, hoping she'd understand what you were trying to bring across. She'd just nod her head slightly and force a smile onto her face. "Yeah, yeah, don't worry I-I get it!" "Please don't be sad.. I'm sorry I just-" "No it's fine..", she would bow to you slightly before she'd leave quickly. Chaeyoung would feel extremely embarrassed about the whole situation and try to get over it as quickly as possible, she would try to avoid you as much as possible not being able to handle the humiliation too well.
Tzuyu
Tumblr media
Your birthdayparty. Tzuyu held the invitation in her shaking hand as she was looking down on her to check if her dress was good enough for the party at your house. As she went in, she immediately was greeted by the loud music in the living room and a lot of people dancing around, talking, laughing, having drinks in their hand. Tzuyu barely knew anyone else except for you, who she was destined to confess tonight. You barely knew eachother since you only had one class together. But ever since you began to playfully flirt with her, Tzuyu‘s heart was yours. You always said things like ‚The prettiest girl, my Tzuyu, babygirl, you know i love you‘ she just couldn‘t help but fall deeper and deeper for you. Where were you? She needed to find you, finally say the words she wanted you to know for so long now. After ten minutes of desperately looking for the one, Tzuyu almost wanted to give up when she heard the most beautiful laugh that had ever filler her ears. There you were. Throwing your head back, laughing while the girl in front of you was laughing too, seemed like that girl just told you a joke. Tzuyu gulped, panic filled her when she made her way to you, straight through the people, only seeing you. She repeated the words in her head for the millionth time now. She started to getting confident, knowing what she wanted you to know, to finally making the step. But as soon as you turned around and realized the girl in the a bit too fancy dress for this kind of party, her whole confidence was blown away. „Babygirl, you made it!“, she gasped when you hugged her. „Looking like the prettiest of them all once more“, you winked at her, making her blush. Tzuyu laughed nervously and was flustered by your kind words. „Uhm...y/n? I wanted to-“ „Want a drink? Or snack, we have pizza“, you cut her off and made your way to the kitchen. Tzuyu frowned and followed you. She didn‘t want anything before the words had left her lips. „No, actually, I wanted to tell you something...“, her voice was shaking too much. This was way harder than she thought. „It‘s about..you and me, I-“ „Oh my god, I love that song, come, dance with me!“, she had no chance of explaining herself before you pulled her to the livingroom, right into the crowd. The music was too loud. Would she have to scream the words? She didn‘t like the atmosphere. Still, something in her pushed her once more. She wanted you to know by tonight. Not tomorrow, not in a year. As you were dancing and singing in front of her, she had her eyes on you, barely moving to the music. „Y/n.. I kinda have a crush on you....I have it for a long time now and it makes me crazy. I just have to let you know to feel relieved, to maybe take a step further and to consider...“, Tzuyu cut herself off when she had to realize that you weren‘t even listening. You were dancing, still singing. It was like a hit in her belly. She confessed and didn‘t even pay attention. She felt hot tears filling her eyes. When the song was done, you smiled in satisfaction and turned your eyes to her sad, pale face. You immediately frowned. „What‘s wrong, baby? Hey“, before you could reach her arm, she flinched away and after showing you a weak smile, she thanked for the invitation and went out. Maybe this wasn‘t a good idea.
Reflections | #32 | March 2020
While in transit to, on and between flights on my journey from Mongolia through Europe to America, I reflected. I processed with ample free hours the Lenten days that met me. I considered how God led my steps.
So this story runs parallel to the handful I’ve written lately. We’ll backtrack before we move forward, then reaching a huge moment for my leaving Mongolia.
That pre-dawn, Thursday, March 5 morning, the 49 of my group rode the coach bus from near our Peace Corps office, out of town to the airport. In time, we’d be above the clouds again and again. From the stillness of transiting, came my reflections.
First Friday of Lent
Hard to believe my journey began Ash Wednesday night, a mere week prior to takeoff. Now I take us back to my city of service last Friday, Feb. 28.
Like I shared before, I felt pretty exhausted by the time I reached church, with my frantic 36 hours since our evacuation command. And so, with Lent’s first Friday of Lent, a Catholic day of fasting and prayer, I figured no better time to pray off stress.
I’d come by earlier that day to drop off the Mongolian missal and hymnal books I borrowed the month before. I also gifted the church my copy of, “Rediscover the Saints,” having finished it my week before Tsagaan Sar. Parish staff thanked me and invited me to come back that day if I had free time.
So I returned. Before I could settle in, staff invited me for lunch. I’d never turn down Mongolians’ hospitality. But the food definitely had meat. So, I thought a quick prayer on it—Should I eat meat on a Friday in Lent, if Catholics offer?
My response feeling from God seemed to be to, “Just love.” So I smiled, figuring to enjoy their offer was probably the most loving thing to do. And it would be the last meal they’d have with me.
They invited I say grace in English. Their English teacher was there with staff, so she understood, at least. I really enjoyed the food, too. It was among my Mongolian favorites, банштай цай /bansh-tahy tsahy/, dumplings in the salty Mongolian milk tea. We took a selfie to commemorate our pleasant hour.
I tried declining seconds, with Friday being for fasting and all, but they still served more, haha. I mused with wonder how Mongolian Christians take hospitality to the next level, in the best ways. And yet, with staff talking about how the government banned seeing their families at Lunar New Year to prevent Coronavirus possibilities, I felt I was leaving a Mongolia very different from the one where I first arrived. I’d miss our days of fellowship after Mass in this little sunlit room.
Afterward, I had my time alone in the sanctuary to decompress. I wandered before the statue to our Blessed Mother. Then I walked the room, photographing Stations of the Cross’ Mongolian descriptions in case I wanted to learn them in the States.
My supervisor to drive me to our next location. I graciously thanked everyone and departed.
Last Supper, Friday Night
Later that Friday night in my city of service, I enjoyed a Last Supper with the American couple who’d supported me so much.
Here, too, we had amazing food, this time American-style. With sundown, I could indulge a bit!
I felt especially joyful to meet yet another woman from Brian Hogan’s memoir, “There’s a Sheep in My Bathtub.” (Recall, I finished this book on the Second New Day of Tsagaan Sar, which was Tuesday earlier that week.) This woman recounted stories of her travels around the world for God, including standout details for me.
She mentioned pretty harrowing experiences with the Hong Kong and Moscow airports. Particularly, she said Moscow’s security just spoke Russian, even in the international airport! So I braced myself. She also suggested I bring snacks so I wouldn’t have to fret on currency conversion. She didn’t like her Moscow airport experience there much.
As for Hong Kong, she mentioned writing in her devotional journal. Then I realized, I had one of those, too. A parishioner in Reno, Nev. gifted one to me before I graduated uni and joined Peace Corps. In fact, the journal’s been where I’ve penned my usual entries daily since Jan. 1. Fittingly, “Pray continuously” appeared recently, matching my 2020 Lenten aspiration. How cool!
With the American couple and their friend, I also considered my future. If I return to Mongolia, life would feel different. Mongolia will have entered spring, maybe summer. I'd redecorate my apartment. Maybe I'd bring things new from the States. I'd be wiser, a little older.
But I'll be loving, all the same.
By the night’s end, I resolved, if there's one thing God's been consistent with me when I've discerned the past couple years, it's to love. For, no matter what, we're beloved. Love, I will.
My American friends gifted me delicious chocolate cake to take home. They know I love their cooking. I’d keep in touch with this bunch long after returning to America.
Last Suppers with spiritual people fill me with such peace. And Christ’s command rang true: “As I have loved you, so you must love one another” (John 13:34).
Saturday Morning Guests
The next morning, Saturday, Feb. 29, the older friend with whom I spent my Lunar New Year’s Eve and First New Day came by to fetch me for his friend he introduced me to during the holiday.
Like old times, my friend came up to my apartment. This time he brought that friend over. And I felt so pleased when my friend, upon entering, explained to his friend, who saw my cross on the wall, that although I’m Christian and a Peace Corps Volunteer, Peace Corps is non-religious.
It’s so important locals understand this distinction… I am who I am, but Peace Corps is what it is. I loved that a local could explain it to another without confusion.
My friend had just gotten off a long night shift. So I readied the instant coffees I saved for guests and switched on my Korean electric kettle that sat upon my short refrigerator. I also shared with the guys some Chinese snacks my 重庆 Chóngqìng friend mailed me when I visited relatives in 北京 Běijīng after Christmas. I liked the spiciness, but I cautioned my friends to be careful. Many Mongolians don’t do spicy, but this older friend does.
Meeting My Older Friend’s Friend
I first met my friend’s friend earlier that week, Sunday, Feb. 23, on the morning of Lunar New Year’s Eve.
Before my older friend dropped me off in his own frigid home. He drove me to the then-crowded indoor market. There he took me inside to meet his friendly shop-owning friend. The friendly man sells a brand of хевийн боов (pronounced like /hyehVEEN b-awe-v/), firm biscuit bricks stacked to form Mongolians’ traditional food tower displays. My supervisor Wednesday night gifted me some of these, actually.
Because all Mongolian families make these towers, the friend saw great business. Apparently the man’s son attends the Chinese school, also. So the friend invited me to visit his home sometime. I said sure, sounds fun. Then my older friend took me back to the car. I waited there alone while he shopped some more. Felt like just another day shopping with my actual dad...
Anyway, when Peace Corps Mongolia’s evacuation crisis broke out, I totally forgot about meeting my friend’s friend. But Mongolians find ways.
Final Full Saturday, Among Friends
Saturday morning, kicking off my last full day in my city of service, we drove to my friend’s friend’s house, in the city’s district closer to the mountain’s base. Coincidentally, I’d probably walked by this house Monday morning, while walking with the Mongolian Christian toward Mt. Bayan-Undur. That day, my same older friend drove to pick me up for the rest of my adventures, that First New Day of Tsagaan Sar.
Entering my friend’s friend’s place this Saturday, I felt the interior could have passed for a small American home, just with fewer walls to divide rooms.
My friend’s friend treated me to a wonderful brunch, I felt so glad to needn’t cook, that busy day. He also gifted me instant Mongolian milk tea, which I felt really excited to try in the States!
Meanwhile, the man’s Chinese-studying son was in an unsurprisingly unsocial mood. The lad distracted himself instead by watching a colorfully animated film dubbed in Mongolian that played on the TV nearby. The film’s art style reminded me of some mix between Disney’s “Avatar” and Dr. Seuss. Weeks later, I chanced upon its name, “Mune.”
I ate to fullness as usual. I hadn’t realized, even on Mongolian Lunar New Year’s Sixth New Day, people still stuff themselves with the same wonderful traditional things they eat the first few days. I loved it.
But during a lull, I felt surprised.
My older friend, suddenly a tad emotional, said how his English improved so much with me.
He spoke smiling, saying how he felt grateful I came to Mongolia. I hadn’t expected my rapid departure would move a grown man. I responded with gratitude to have met him and spoke again my hope to return.
Once More Upon Bayan-Undur
After brunch, since I wouldn’t meet my other friends till later that afternoon, the men I ate with joined me instead. And so, after waiting in the cold nearly an hour wondering whether the others might show, we ascended.
Our trio walked up past the place where I walked Monday, and we summited. I’d miss this snow, knowing I’d return to a desert in the States.
We came down the front side, somewhat like the path I’d taken with the weekly hiking group I accompanied winter weekend mornings. On the walk down, I found my pace faster than the other men’s. I wondered if this resulted from my weeks of hikes. Ahead, I realized I followed the овоо /aw-vaw/ stone shrines to know the way down.
I considered in self-reflection how during my final week in Mongolia, I felt like Aang or Korra meeting their past lives' friends. My ‘past lives’ were Peace Corps Volunteers before me. Our community’s common affection for our service remains.
Our trio took a route down into the ger (home) district, where we parted with my older friend. He needed rest but would visit me that evening. I returned to his friend’s home. The kind man served me a stir-fry with rice that tasted of my summer host family's cooking. I miss them… Little did I know, the night after, I’d ride through my host family’s town during evacuation.
My friend’s friend drove me around town to pick up my community friends to visit my apartment and say farewells. Later that night, I’d embark on the sunset trek to end my last city day.
Thursday Leaving Mongolia: The Airport
Now fast-forward to Thursday, March 5, my departure from Mongolia. After half a week of resilience in the capital followed by an all-nighter to conclude it, I felt a profound experience at the airport.
Our Peace Corps group of 49 reached Chinggis Khaan International Airport long before daybreak. My past blur here flying out two months before felt stressful, traveling alone. But now I felt calm. For now, I traveled among friends.
I entered Mongolia’s international terminal early, recalling its location. I settled smoothly into the check-in line then turned behind. I scanned our face-masked crowd to see if I could find the senior TEFL friend I ran into throughout the week. I’d hoped I might see her the night before during Volunteer farewells, but we’d be on the same flight anyway.
Some time later, I saw my friend and waved. She waved back, but not as expected—I thought she looked as though sobbing. I felt troubled. So, tugging my luggage, I left my spot in the line to join her in back.
I stood beside her, wishing I could offer something. I waited in silence, trying to feel her pain.
When speaking, my friend sounded as though with grief. This country has been everything to her. This is what she committed to, as a Peace Corps Volunteer. And she's leaving too soon. She hoped I will get the chance to come back, to finish my service and one day know the pain she feels to leave these people.
I felt solemn. She was right.
And while I might be able to return, her service ended.
Around us, I wondered if anyone noticed, but plenty seemed preoccupied with making our flight. So I reckoned I needn’t worry, since I came to do good.
My friend held my hand and thanked me for coming. From beneath her face mask, she commented about needing tissues and not having any. I remembered mine and quickly emptied my pocket tissue pouch. She laughed a little and looked glad. She continued to squeeze my hand as we pushed our luggage to move forward in line.
Trials Leaving Mongolia: The Airport
Crisis! When we reached the line's front, turns out we both had overweight luggage.
We lugged our luggage aside. I was 2 kg over—must have been the extra gifts, we figured. So I shifted books and denser snacks to my personal item and carry-on then wore my blazer as an addition to my already five layers. I’d fly with six layers, whatever. Thus, I checked in my luggage.
But my friend wasn't so lucky. She needed to pay extra to get her luggage through. So she left upset to another window outside the line. With my things in order and feeling quite familiar with the airport, I decided to accompany her.
We waited an awful long time. Another senior cohort friend we’d evacuated our provinces with needed to pay a similar fee. A couple more senior cohort friends joined the line, for they had pets traveling. So I waited among the four. They were such inspirations to me.
Meanwhile I tried to help my friend, who sat on her luggage and looked a little disheveled. She said something of her amazement how we kept getting stuck together. I agreed. I remembered the fall conference, our evacuation caravan and the week’s surprise meet-ups at Peace Corps’ office. Lovely coincidences.
During our wait, I felt moved by the love and loss my friend felt toward her community and service. I remembered my grief amid flights three years ago, when Mom was killed and stressfully I had to fly home. So I wished I could say something to help my friend. I prayed this affliction might leave her. I prayed to have the right words. But I knew, sometimes the better words are those unsaid.
Sometimes my friend forgot whether she grabbed something or didn't, whether I grabbed something or didn't. I replied patiently. I wanted to say it'd be OK soon, but such words mean little. I offered my water, offered to cover the expense, even. She accepted my water.
Eventually my friend noticed I didn’t have an expense to pay and that I just wanted to support her. Her anxiety seemed to lighten, and she smiled again. She insisted I'm so kind. She added I didn't have to stay for her. But I reaffirmed I'm comfortable with the airport and felt I’d nowhere to be more urgently. I wanted her to feel OK. She said although she doesn't believe in God, God would reward me very much for helping. I wasn't sure what to make of that. But it felt kind.
As we neared less than an hour till takeoff, the couple senior cohort friends behind us, too, grew anxious whether we'd make our flight. They said since I didn't need to be in line, I should head to our gate. Still, I knew we'd plenty of time, considering my previous rush through airport security on a crowded day here with less time. But, going ahead would make our group happiest. So I wished everyone well and calmly went in.
Leaving Mongolia: The Airport
After a smooth clear through passport control, friends from our evacuation group asked me if I'd seen the others. I explained they were at the payment window. Behind me, I noticed my friend already entering security. I felt glad to give others peace.
I ran into a couple evacuation friends shortly after. One commented I was better than him, for waiting behind to help. I appreciated his compliment. I didn’t blame anyone for going ahead, anyway. We’re all trying to be prudent.
I had plenty time to get my bearings as boarding began, too. God always has a way.
I pick up my next story right where this leaves off, bringing you with me aboard my flights from Mongolia through Europe and back to America. We’re off to Moscow, Berlin and Amsterdam, so get ready for a cultural odyssey like none of mine before!
Two years ago this month, when Elon Musk revealed the unfinished Tesla Model 3 to the world, I plunked down my thousand bucks for a spot on the list. Now, the (more) affordable Tesla has become a real car, one that just won Popular Mechanics Car of the Year. The factory is cranking out more than 2,000 per week. And my number has come up.
Sort of. Here's what happens when Tesla emails you that "Your Model 3 Is Ready to Order."
First of all, your Model 3 is not ready-not unless you want the tricked-out "First Production" version that features 310 miles of range and all the premium upgrades, which jacks up the cost to $49,000. This much we knew. If you want a dual-motor all-wheel-drive 3, you've got to wait a little longer. I want the base model with 220 miles of range, the one that costs 35 grand before the options, which means I'll be waiting until late 2018.
Upon seeing GER for the first time what do you think DIO would do? I think he would try to test the arrow on himself and his minions. I mean who wouldn't want The World Requiem, Cream Requiem, and MIH Requiem. (God that'd be terrifying.)
I think Giorno wouldn’t let him, probably. Unless Dio has his own arrow at this point in time, in which case, Za Warudo Requieum is gonna fuck us all up exponentially.
Therefore, I will make this a cute, silly, and out of character headcanon before we behold how truly terrifying this will be talking about power levels and what would really happen.
(feel free to tell me what you think would really happen though)
Dio hears Giorno marching up to the doorway. He sounds tired. He sounds mafia’d out, like he had to kill a subordinate today for  betrayal and it emotionally exhausts him to do stuff like that. Dio pierces The World with the arrow (who always :(’s because what the fuck master) and screams [ZA WARUDO REQUIEM]
He spends the extra hours that this stand gives him in stopped time to make sure everything is perfect for his son when he gets home. Because he can manipulate time now according to location, he brews him tea and sets it back outside in stopped time. He fluffs a pillow. He sets out his favorite book and turns on the television to a favorite movie. He leaves the house and comes back with a nice winter robe that Giorno’s been wanting for a while to lay out. He resumes time, and the relief on Giorno’s face when he looks inside and smells his favorite tea, sees a dish of pudding and his favorite chair ready for him helps him relax.
(high five, za warudo. don’t give me that look. you’ve gotten worse than stabbed before)
"Shocking", "Nightmare" - Many Rangers fans react as winger nears exit door
Glenn Middleton is set for a medical at Hibs with a view to a season-long loan move, according to The Daily Record, but Rangers fans aren’t quite sure what to think.
Middleton had previously looked like he was heading to the Dutch second tier with NAC Breda, but could now be turning out at Easter Road next season.
The 19-year-old also saw a move to Doncaster Rovers fall through in this window, according to The Scottish Sun.
The winger started last season well, impressing in the Europa League, but struggled for game time in the second half of the season, playing only three times after the winter break.
And with The Daily Record reporting that he’s on the brink of a temporary switch to Paul Heckingbottom’s side, the Gers faithful can’t make up their minds on the deal.
Some see it as a chance for one of their talented youngsters to earn some game time at a high level. Others aren’t too happy to be loaning a player to a league rival in Hibs.
Here’s how they reacted to the news on Twitter:
Agree – as long as he’s not allowed to play against us.
— Ryan Gilbert (@RyanGilbert79) August 5, 2019
He’d arguably come back a better player from a season in Holland and that’s the main thing. But if he helped hibs take points off that lot then I wouldn’t complain.
— Robert West (@rapwest) August 4, 2019
I think he will do really well and we will see how good he actually is and if hes ready. Hibs have got a good manager also.
But what if Lambert's SO has a phobia of reptiles and she's trying to be supportive of his hobbies but she just can't and passes out? oh no.
A/N: I love this!! I hope I wrote it good enough!! I’m not scared of snakes.... Or really any “creepy” animals, so I wasn’t too sure how to write it, but I hope you like it!! We can add Clea the ball python to Lambert’s list of animals!
***
You shifted around on the bed, whining a little.
“Lambert?” You called his name. You reached out for him. The room was cold even underneath your multiple blankets. A draft was blowing in from somewhere.
The witcher didn’t answer you.
You lifted your head and called his name again, ready to kick the back of his leg. However, you found that his side of the bed was empty.
You sat up, brushing your hair back out of your eyes, and frowned.
The fire in the hearth across the room was out which explained why the room was so cold. How long had Lambert been gone?
Climbing out of bed, you put on a pair of trousers and boots as well as one of Lambert’s shirts. That wasn’t enough, so you pulled out your cloak from the wardrobe. Out of the corner of your eye, you caught sight of the terrarium that Clea, Lambert’s ball python, resided in during the night. She was brown with tan splotches.
Goosebumps rose on your skin as you realized you were alone in the room with her. Lambert did his best to never leave you alone with her. You were deathly afraid of snakes. You knew Clea wasn’t dangerous, but you were still terrified of snakes nonetheless. Lambert was trying to get you more comfortable with her, but it was a slow process.
You knew the cold wasn’t good for her. He usually kept the room warm enough for her during the harsh winters at the keep. You knew a fire needed to be started, but it would be better if Lambert did it.
You chewed on your lip as you decided on what to do. Should you go get Lambert first? Or see if Clea was okay?
You chose the latter, taking a few hesitant steps towards the terrarium. The top was closed, so she couldn’t get out. You’d just have to search for her.
You looked and looked, but had no luck. Sometimes she liked to really hide to get away from everyone. But maybe something was wrong. Maybe it was too cold for her.
***
It wasn’t too hard to find Lambert. He was in the kitchen with Eskel and Vesemir. Lambert was sitting at the table while Vesemir and Eskel made breakfast.
“Lambert, the fire in our room went out.” You told him as you walked into the kitchen. “Is Clea going to be okay?”
“Yeah, bug. She’ll be fine.” Lambert nodded his head. The corner of his lips turned up as he looked at you. “Did you sleep good?”
“I did. Would’ve slept better if that draft wasn’t so bad.” You straddled the bench that Lambert sat on and faced him.
“M’gonna get it fixed.”
“M’still sleepy.” You whined, brows drawing together as you offered him a pitiful frown.
“Poor baby.” Lambert teased you softly, letting you lean your head against his shoulder. You loosely wrapped your arms around his toros and closed your eyes.
You stayed like that for a few moments, enjoying his presence, listening to the sounds of Eskel and Vesemir talking and to Lambert breathing.
But then you felt something in Lambert’s doublet move. It wasn’t just him breathing. Something was moving, and it was moving in an odd way.
You lifted your head up and peered around his arm, looking at the chest of his doublet. It was opened a little and his undershirt peeked out.
“Staring isn’t nice, you know.” He teased.
“Are you okay?” You found the bottom of his doublet and began to reach underneath, searching for whatever might have been feeling funny.
“You might not want to do that, bug.” Lambert started, reaching for your arm but he didn’t get to you in time.
Your hand made contact with a smooth warm surface and instantly, you pulled back. A gasp was sucked through your lips and you jumped out of your seat. You knew what Clea felt like from the very, very few times you had petted her and you knew you had just touched her.
“La-Lambert!” You said his name, your breathing labored as your heart began to pound in your chest.
“I tried to warn you, bug.” He said, reaching out for your hand. “Clea’s in there. She won’t hurt you.”
“Is she okay?” You heard someone ask. It could’ve been Vesemir or Eskel. Hell, it could’ve even been Yennefer. You couldn’t think straight at the moment.
As you looked at the witcher in front of you, the python’s head poked out of the top of his doublet and her tongue flicked out.
The room began to move around you like you were spinning in a circle and the noises were muffled. You brought your hand up to try to balance yourself on the table, but you missed the table all together. You watched as the floor came closer and closer to your face and then suddenly, everything was black.
***
“She’s waking up.” Eskel spoke. A cold hand pressed against your forehead. You whined.
“She should be fine.” Vesemir said. “Didn’t hit her head. Clea just surprised her is all.”
“Your hand is cold.” You thought out loud, bringing your own hand up to rub your eyes.
“Sorry, Y/N.” Eskel apologized. “Didn’t want to pour water on you with it being so cold.”
“Geralt and Ciri should be back with firewood soon.” Lambert sighed.
You lifted your head to see him sitting at the table. Clea was comfortably draped around his shoulders.
You were laying on the floor just behind him. Underneath your head was a folded up cloak to provide support.
“How are you feeling, bug?”
“M’okay.” You pushed yourself into a sitting position. “Should’ve expected you to have Clea in your doublet.”
“I tried to warn you.” He grinned a little.
“How long was I out?”
“Maybe two minutes. Shorter than last time.”
“You’re keeping track?”
“Of course.” He held his hand out for you. You put your hand in his and let him help you to your feet.
Your eyes stayed on Clea the entire time, watching the snake carefully.
“You wanna sit down by me, bug?” Lambert asked quietly, still holding your hand. “Or you wanna sit across from me?”
You chewed on the inside of your cheek for a moment, looking from the seat beside Lambert to the one across from him. You really wanted to sit beside him, but you didn’t want to be so fidgety and uncomfortable with Clea right there. You also didn’t want to make him take her upstairs to the cold bedroom.
“I can sit across from you.” You told him, giving him a little smile. He nodded but didn’t let your hand go.
“Can I get a kiss?”
“Not with her around your neck.”
part 9 of the Nomad Nie AU // On AO3
the nomads move for the winter, and encounter some trouble on the way
After some consideration, Lan Xichen and Huaisang decided that Mingjue did not need to know that his brother had hurt himself for the time being. Though the wound was healing slowly, Huaisang swore that it was getting better at what was a normal speed for him, and Lan Xichen believed him. After all, Huaisang had stopped fighting his husband on that subject, and allowed Lan Xichen to help him keep the wound clean and to check on it when they were alone. It did seem healthy enough, as long as Huaisang didn't poke it too much.
They also decided that, until Mingjue had forgiven Lan Xichen for the hunting trip, it would be best if he didn’t know that Huaisang had shared his secret with his husband. Lan Xichen felt somewhat uncomfortable about what seemed like a lie to him, but trusted Huaisang to know his brother’s temper.
There were more pressing things to think about anyway. A few days after that conversation, the time came for the whole clan to move toward their winter dwellings, and such an endeavour left little time for personal problems. Lan Xichen had never even moved houses, except for the summer after his mother’s death which his brother and him spent at a relative’s home. Taking what amounted to an entire village and putting it on wheels was particularly impressive to him. He asked as many questions as he could, and Huaisang patiently answered them all, with Mingjue or Meng Yao adding details if one of thel was around.
As Huaisang explained, for their clan moving was a more complicated thing than for most others, because they were a larger group than most nomads. If Mingjue had not been Khan, it was likely that some of their most distant cousins would have broken off in search of their own territory. Even like this, they usually separated in two smaller groups during the winter so that their respective herds didn’t compete for food and exhaust the winter grass too soon.
“You don’t prepare hay for the winter?” Lan Xichen asked upon hearing this.
“Hay?” Huaisang repeated. “Hay… I don’t know that word.”
“It’s… cutting grass and putting it to dry so animals have something to eat in winter,” Lan Xichen explained.
“Ah… no, they manage on their own. Our animals are smart enough for that,” Huaisang proudly said. “If Han beasts are too stupid to feed themselves, it must be so bothersome.”
“We just raise them differently,” Lan Xichen protested, though having lived most of his life in the city before this trip with his uncle, he couldn’t be sure. Perhaps Han animals were really lazy and pampered. He would have to ask Meng Yao if he was more educated in these matters. “Isn’t it dangerous to break into groups like this? Aren’t you at war with the Wen?”
Huaisang laughed, and nodded before explaining that it would have been rude for anyone to attack in winter. It offended the heavens, and unless there was some very great dispute happening between two clans or two tribes, then usually even enemies could be expected to offer hospitality once the first snows started. In the same manner, attacking while people were moving camp was such a repulsive concept that Huaisang actually shivered when Lan Xichen expressed that worry.
“What honour is there in a victory over weakened people?” Huaisang asked.
“But then, less soldiers die,” Lan Xichen pointed out, which got him a horrified look. Sun Zi possibly wouldn’t be a popular read here, he figured, and quickly changed the subject before offending his husband’s sensibilities any further.
When the big day came, it took barely more than a sichen for each family to dismantle their ger, and only a little more time to place the different components on carts pulled by oxen. For personal items, crates had been put on the back of other oxen. Those crates were also used to carry those too young or too old to be riding horses. Cattle could carry more weight than horses, Huaisang had explained, and they were usually more even tempered. At the same time, they were more dangerous when their temper did change, and it was not unusual for people to die or be wounded during the move. They did everything they could to prevent that, but the risk could never be fully eliminated.
Because the migration could be dangerous, young people often took it as a matter of pride to help keep everyone safe. Almost everyone had a story about some disaster or other that they had prevented, be it calming an ox before it could throw off the babies it carried, or killing wolves that had been chasing one of the herds. Everyone except Huaisang, who Khan Mingjue kept close to himself and forbade from putting himself in danger.
That year, like every year apparently, Huaisang begged his brother to put him in charge of something. He promised to be careful, to let someone else handle the oxen if they were too agitated, to only shoot from a distance if there were wolves, but his brother refused to listen, and even threatened to have him ride on an ox like a child if he wouldn’t stop being unreasonable.
Having said this, Khan Mingjue braced himself for his brother to explode with anger, as did everyone around them. Yet Huaisang, in spite of his obvious humiliation at being dismissed that way, managed to keep his calm this time.
“If that’s my Khan’s decision, I’ll respect it,” he hissed. Then, after a glance at Lan Xichen who nodded encouragingly, he added. “Still, do consider it, if the need arises. We need everyone to do their part, and I don’t want to do any less than others. If there’s something I can do, I hope you’ll let me.”
“I will,” Mingjue promised, taken aback by that reasonable reaction.
Satisfied for the time being by that progress, Huaisang dropped the matter and went away with his husband to show him the cart containing their own ger. When they were far enough from the Khan, Huaisang kicked some clump of yellowed grass with enough force to send it flying, and launched into a long rant against his brother’s tyrannical tendencies. Lan Xichen counted this as a victory anyway. If Huaisang could learn to keep his temper in check around his brother, then the Khan might start to accept that his brother was more than just a capricious child.
Huaisang’s promise to be well behaved and not put himself in danger was soon put to the test. Even within the first few days, there were already incidents happening. Nothing too big on the whole, but only because it was caught on time: oxen getting annoyed, herds being spooked by somethings and nearly running in panic, and a pack of wolves that seemed to be following them from a safe distance, clearly waiting for a chance to strike.
“We’ll lose a few horses, probably some cows as well,” Huaisang predicted, before his face turned dark. “In bad years, we lose a child that wandered off.”
Lan Xichen shivered upon hearing this. He knew wolves were dangerous, of course, but they had never been part of his daily life. His uncle had warned him they might encounter some as they travelled west, but he had made it sound like a small risk compared to what some nomads might do to them if caught. Lan Xichen hoped he wouldn’t have to come anywhere near wolves, not when even someone as fearless as Zonghui would show caution when chasing them away from the herds.
Of course, younger men showed less fear. About a week into the start of the journey, one boy a little younger than Huaisang managed to shoot a wolf that had attacked a heifer under the cover of night. He proudly showed off his kill to the entire clan, and was treated like a hero by his peers. Even though the Khan advised against needless acts of courage, he too congratulated the boy for his success. Huaisang watched, clearly devoured by envy, but said nothing.
A few nights after, when there was another attack while Huaisang was keeping watch. It was a normal chore for young people, but for Huaisang it was a first, and the Khan had made it quite clear he shouldn't take it as an excuse to be reckless. So when he heard wolves, Huaisang dutifully told others to go after the animals and stayed safely behind. This time two wolves were killed, and again the Khan thanked the young people who had protected the herds while his brother seethed quietly.
The morning after, Huaisang was in a predictably dreadful mood as they resumed their journey. Sitting on his horse more stiffly than usual, Huaisang kept glaring at everyone, and looked ready to snap at whoever would dare to talk to him. Lan Xichen felt dreadfully sorry for his husband, especially as he was beginning to understand just how important that sort of heroism was among the nomads. The wolves’ pelts had been prepared to be kept right away both times, and Lan Xichen had been explained they’d either be sold for a very high price or kept as precious courting gifts, valued as highly as a good racing horse.
“You’ll have your turn too,” Lan Xichen told Huaisang when his husband kept glancing toward the heroes of the day. “Your brother will come to reason, sooner or later.”
Huaisang shrugged, his expression only becoming darker at that reassurance. Lan Xichen turned to Meng Yao, who was riding with them that day. He hoped that his friend would support him and encourage Huaisang to obedience, since he was so scared of the Khan himself, but Meng Yao shook his head.
“If the Khan was to ever trust Huaisang, it would have happened already,” he said, turning to Huaisang. “If you wait for his permission, you will be an elder and you will never have killed anything fiercer than a rabbit. Of course I’m not encouraging you to put yourself in danger,” Meng Yao quickly added when Lan Xichen frowned at him. “It would be very unwise to cross him, especially when he already has so many worries, trying to get everyone safely to the winter dwellings. Still… things are what they are.”
Huaisang sighed deeply.
“I really don’t want to bother him, but also… I could have killed one of those wolves last night. I could have!”he exploded, slightly startling his horse. “If Yasheng could, then anyone might have managed. It wasn’t even that big of a wolf, probably a pup born this spring!”
“Then why didn’t you try?” Meng Yao asked. “Don’t tell me you’re really expecting your brother to notice your obedience? He never pays attention to what you do, unless it crosses him, you know that.”
Lan Xichen felt a little annoyed at Meng Yao for saying that. It was a great misunderstanding of the Khan’s character in his opinion. Of course Meng Yao couldn’t understand how much Mingjue cared about his brother, and there was bad blood between him and the Khan. Still, even before learning of Huaisang’s secret, Lan Xichen wouldn’t have accused the Khan of being uncaring. A little clumsy in handling his emotions, yes, but right from the first moment he had known that Mingjue loved his brother dearly, and wanted nothing but his happiness.
“I’m trying something,” Huaisang evasively answered. “I’m a married man now, I can’t continue acting like a child. I have to show an example for my poor, unmarried brother so that he too can see the appeal of settling down.”
Meng Yao smiled indulgently at the weak joke, but he did not appear quite convinced by that explanation. Lan Xichen then promptly asked about a mountain range in the distance, eager to change the topic. Even if Huaisang had been doing well so far at keeping himself out of trouble, Lan Xichen worried that talking too much about this would tempt him to do something stupid.
For a few days, there were no more attacks on the herd. The pack of wolves that had followed them for a while seemed to have given up on pursuing them after such heavy losses. But this didn’t mean the animals were safe: soon enough, a few people spotted a solitary male trailing them, which Lan Xichen learned was far more worrying than a pack. Wolves did not do well on their own, and so that lone male might get desperate and attack just anything it would get close to -or anyone.
Still, this wasn’t the biggest worry on everyone’s mind. It had started snowing, and that was a more urgent concern. The snow remained light so far, but it was also constant, and everyone was worried they’d struggle to reach their wintering location. Everyone also kept a close eye on children and elderly people to make sure they did not suffer too much from the cold. Lan Xichen himself had some trouble with those temperatures, and was given as warm of a deel as could be found to wear under his Han robes and help him withstand this weather he wasn’t used to.
Quite shamelessly, Nie Huaisang also kept offering to help keep him warm, a devious smile on his lips. Lan Xichen always mildly scolded him for suggesting something so improper, while his husband laughed at his reaction. Mostly, Lan Xichen was annoyed that there was even less privacy than usual as they travelled, which meant they barely managed to kiss, let alone think of other things.
Not that he wasn’t happy with the time they spent together. Lan Xichen was glad that they could ride their horses together, that Huaisang was teaching him how to help around and be an active member of the clan, that they could chat whenever there was a moment of quiet. He enjoyed all this greatly. It was just that he had the ever growing certainty he’d also enjoy being perfectly alone with Huaisang to slowly peel away every layer of clothing on his husband’s body so he could kiss every inch of warm skin and…
And that was not a train of thought he ought to have had in public, Lan Xichen had to remind himself several times every day. The time for it would come, hopefully, but the time just wasn’t now.
On one snowy morning, it was decided that the time had come for the group to divide into two, since they were approaching one of the wintering spots that the clan used. They spent most of that morning checking who was going in what direction, whether nobody would be taking something that wasn’t theirs, and how soon someone should ride between the two camps to check that everyone had managed to settle according to plan.
While Lan Xichen was rather untouched by all this activity, it wasn’t so for Meng Yao. It had initially been decided that he would go with the other group, but at the last moment Khan Mingjue changed his mind. Meng Yao would stay where the Khan could keep an eye on him, which meant all his possessions would have to be transferred to a different cart. So far he had been sharing the cart of Wenyan, a widow with whom he got along fairly well, and whose toddler was particularly attached to him. The child cried heavy tears the entire time Meng Yao moved his possessions, but the Khan had made up his mind and wouldn’t be moved.
It really was unfair, Lan Xichen thought. Maybe once the Khan had been convinced to trust his brother a little more, they would have to work on making him do the same with poor Meng Yao. When they started moving again around noon, Lan Xichen shared that idea with Huaisang who agreed that the situation was ridiculous, and they tried to find ideas on how to make the two reconcile.
It kept them busy for a good half of the afternoon, until they had the surprise of being joined by Meng Yao who should have been very far away already.
“Wenyan says that Cunzhi is missing,” Meng Yao urgently said when they asked why he had returned. “Nobody has seen him nearly since we separated, and she was afraid he managed to escape to come see me so she rode all the way here. Someone needs to warn the Khan, but her horse is tired and I… well, I can’t,” he sighed. “I’m already going to be blamed for this, I don’t want to be the one to tell him.”
“I’ll tell him,” Huaisang immediately said, already preparing to dash ahead, but Meng Yao shook his head.
“Isn’t it better if you send Lan gongzi and come with me to look for Cunzhi? He could be just anywhere, and you’re one of the best riders of the clan. If he’s out in the wild, I’m sure you’ll be the one to find him.”
This gave Huaisang pause. His hands tightened on his reins, and he glanced at Lan Xichen, to ask for his opinion. It was obvious that he desperately wanted to go. After all, finding that child would show people that he wasn’t just lazy and pampered, while also being far less dangerous than hunting wolves or calming an ox.
“Your brother won’t be happy if you go without his permission,” Lan Xichen still said. Huaisang’s face fell at the reminder. “The child is probably just hiding on a cart. I’ll go with Meng Yao to check if he wandered off, you warn your brother and see what he thinks should be done.”
With great reluctance, Huaisang agreed and sent his horse galloping toward the front of the group. Meng Yao watched him go with an unreadable expression, before turning his own horse around to go in search of the child while Lan Xichen followed suit. They joined up with a few others to check that the child hadn't been found, then quickly separated after agreeing to meet at a certain place. Meng Yao and two others went riding in the direction the other group ought to be while Lan Xichen retraced their steps. They all thought it unlikely that Cunzhi would have been just left behind, so it seemed enough to have just one person go that way. Meng Yao had volunteered, but the Khan did not allow for him to ride alone, so Lan Xichen was picked instead.
Just as expected, Lan Xichen reached the site where they had camped for the night without seeing a trace of the child. He could easily have turned around then, but decided instead to check carefully. Unlikely didn't mean impossible. Jumping down from Shuoyue, Lan Xichen called Cunzhi’s name until he thought he spotted something in a small bush, a touch of red hidden under the snow covered branches. It could have been nothing more than a bird, or a scrap of fabric, but Lan Xichen thought it prudent to check.
Inside the bush, he found Cunzhi.
In spite of the warm clothes he wore, the child’s face and hands were a concerning shade of purple, and it was rather obvious that he had been crying a lot. Lan Xichen didn’t lose a moment. He fell to his knees and plunged his hands into the bush to retrieve the child, not noticing the way sharp thorns were tearing at his skin and sleeves. He was only glad to be wearing some of his own clothes over the deel lended to him, since it made it easier to protect the child’s face from those same thorns.
“No!” Cunzhi weakly cried out, refusing to leave his hiding place. He struggled without much strength, sluggish from the cold. “Cunzhi want Menyao!”
“I’ll take you to Meng Yao,” Lan Xichen replied, without much effect. The child started crying again, and wriggled with all that he had, trying to escape his rescuer. “Please, Cunzhi, calm down. Meng Yao is looking for you, don’t you want to see him again?”
“Cunzhi wait here! Cunzhi is good!”
Lan Xichen sighed, and tried to get up again. It was not an easy task with the toddler fighting against his grasp, and riding Shuoyue would be even worse. The horse had a good temperament and shouldn’t get spooked by the cries of a child on his back, but if Cunzhi managed to escape Lan Xichen’s grasp and fell, he might get seriously hurt. Not only was Lan Xichen worried for the child, but more selfishly he feared the Khan’s reaction, should something of the sort happen.
Hoping to calm the toddler and buy his cooperation, Lan Xichen started looking into his clothes for a snack of some sort. “Do you want something to eat, Cunzhi?” he asked. “If you’re good, you will get a treat, and you will also see Meng Yao and your mother.”
“Mama?” Cunzhi sobbed, clumsily wiping his eyes. “Cunzhi want mama. Cunzhi want mama now!”
“Then Cunzhi comes with Xichen,” Lan Xichen said, dangling a piece of aarduul in front of the child. “You’re going to be good, right? Your mother is very worried.”
To Lan Xichen’s immense relief, the food had the intended effect. Cunzhi’s tears slowed down a little as he stared at the aarduul, making a grabbing movement. The toddler had finally started to calm down when Shuoyue decided it was its turn to become agitated. The horse whined and neighing with ever increasing alarm. When Lan Xichen turned to see what the matter was, he found himself face to face with a wolf.
If Lan Xichen had known more about wolves, he might have noticed that the animal was rather thin, as if it hadn’t eaten well for a long while, and not a particularly impressive specimen overall. But for Lan Xichen, who had been expecting wolves to be nothing but a bigger and meaner sort of dogs, the encounter was terrifying. He was unarmed, away from anyone who might have helped him, and hindered by a child who, after seeing the wolf, had just started crying again from fright.
Lan Xichen’s first impulse was to run for it and try to reach Shuoyue, but the wolf stood between him and his nervous horse. The animal looked ready to bolt away at the first excuse anyway, making that option unsafe.
The wolf growled, and stepped closer.
Overcome by terror, Lan Xichen glared at it and shushed it.
“Quiet!” he ordered in the same annoyed tone he once used on his brother when they were children and Wangji had decided to learn the guqin on his own. The wolf growled again. Lan Xichen stomped his foot and changed his hold on Cunzhi so he could wave one arm menacingly, making his long sleeve waver before him. “I said quiet! I don’t have time to deal with this, so you’d better leave me alone!”
Noticing that the wolf seemed to be following the movements of his sleeve, Lan Xichen waved his arm more menacingly.
“Go!” he shouted. “Or else we’re both going to regret it! Go! Go now!”
The wolf hesitated, snarling at Lan Xichen who continued shouting, stomping, and waving his free arm until the animal decided that this prey wouldn’t be worth the effort. It walked away, turning to check on Lan Xichen every few steps. Lan Xichen continued shouting until he figured that the wolf was far enough, at which point he ran to Shuoyue, jumped on its back, and sent it running. The horse, just as terrified as its riders, galloped for longer than was safe, until they reached the place where he was supposed to meet the others looking for Cunzhi.
Lan Xichen was the first one there, though Cunzhi and him were not alone for very long. After a little while, a group of riders joined him coming from the main group of nomad rather than those who had split off, among which were Khan Mingjue and Huaisang.
“You found him!” Huaisang said, bringing his horse closer. He looked at Shuoyue, drenched in sweat, trembling with exhaustion, and frowned. “Which did you push your horse so hard? It was not so urgent.”
“I was worried Cunshi would become sick,” Lan Xichen said, figuring there was no need to reveal his encounter with a wolf. “He seems unwell, no?”
“Cunzhi cold,” the toddler mumbled. “Was scary. Snow, and big dog.”
“Big dog?” Khan Mingjue remarked, coming close as well and taking the child from Lan Xichen. “What big dog?”
“It’s nothing,” Lan Xichen said, looking away. “We had an encounter, but nothing to worry at all. Cunzhi is safe, yes?”
Huaisang turned pale, and grabbed his husband’s wrist.
“You fought a wolf?” he asked. For a moment, Lan Xichen feared that his husband would get jealous over that chance for glory, but Huaisang’s face showed nothing but open concern. “Are you hurt? Did it bite you? Your hands are bleeding!”
“Not from the wolf,” Lan Xichen replied, a little embarrassed. “I’m fine, really. I just shouted at the wolf until it went away.”
The nomads, at first, stared at him as if he had insulted their ancestors. Before too long, Khan Mingjue burst out laughing, followed in this by the entire group except Huaisang who only looked more worried. They were all still laughing when Meng Yao and the others with him reached the meeting point. After being brought up to date on the situation, they started laughing as well, though at that point everyone was also complimenting Lan Xichen for handling that situation so well. Lan Xichen, who had just been terrified, accepted the compliments with humility, convinced he had just been lucky. If the wolf had been a little hungrier, or a little stronger, both him and Cunzhi would have been in trouble.
Later on, as they were alone in their tent and getting ready for the night, Huaisang cuddled against his husband’s side and made him give a more detailed account of the encounter. Huaisang shivered the whole time, and by the end of the story his expression was quite grim.
“You were very unlucky to have met that wolf,” he said, “but very lucky that things went so well. From now on, you need to carry a sword.”
Lan Xichen agreed. Several people had already told him the same thing, including the Khan himself.
“I guess now I understand a little better why my brother is like this,” Huaisang said. He paused a moment, pressing himself harder against Lan Xichen’s side who wrapped his arms around him. “Don’t tell Mingjue I said that. He’ll be awful if he hears I can agree with him sometimes.”
“Isn’t he always awful?” Lan Xichen teased.
“Only when he’s right,” Huaisang retorted with a pout. “Which happens far too often.”
Lan Xichen chuckled, and pulled Huaisang closer to him, until his husband was almost sitting on his lap. He’d get embarrassed in a moment when the Khan returned to their tent, but right then, as it finally hit him just how much danger he’d been in, Lan Xichen needed this too much to care about shame.
The Mongolian Fur Game
Merino is a high quality sheepskin sometimes known as Spanish lamb. The finest quality wool, fur, diary goods, and meat are made in Mongolia on account of the simple fact that the animals are raised humanely and healthily. After the cashmere was spun, it’s prepared to be knitted into a lovely cashmere wrap. Be certain you have a variety of scarves in your house, which means you will be ready to visit any occasion. Make certain you have a number of scarves in your closet, so you’ll be prepared to visit any occasion. Mongolian fur scarves are found in many distinctive colours and are made from Tibetan or Mongolian lamb fur. Whatever the case, even in the event that you choose to purchase an extremely big and long fur scarf you’ll be surprised by how little they weigh.
The purest cashmere yarn is created out of goat hair that arrives from under the belly or the neck region of the goat. Fauxfur fabric was used for many years to help people stay warm during winter. For minor and light spots, you may use a damp cloth to wash things off. Minky fabric is created entirely of polyester, which usually means that you don’t need to be worried about prewashing.
