I was so worried before I got my tongue pierced that it might become a big sensory issue and I’m honestly surprised because while it’s impossible to forget it’s there, it’s almost like.. good? It’s comforting to have it there, same with my lip piercing. Like a weighted blanket
#just waiting for a dentist to tell me all about how my mouth is going to become a fucked up mess because of itjust like they did with my#lip piercing which does not even touch my teeth or gums the majority of the time#they’d have more of a point with this one of course but I still don’t particularly wanna hear how it’s going to irreversibly fuck me up and#i’ll have to take it out. my dental hygiene has actually been better since I got it so ironically it’s actually improving things

Top 10 Tips for Maintaining Optimal Oral Health
Maintaining optimal oral health is essential for overall well-being and can significantly impact your quality of life. A bright smile not only enhances your confidence but also helps prevent various health issues. To ensure your oral hygiene is up to par, here are the top 10 tips for maintaining optimal oral health.
1. Brush Your Teeth Twice a Day
Brushing your teeth is the cornerstone of dental hygiene. It is important to brush your teeth at least twice a day—once in the morning and once before bed. Use a fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Spend at least two minutes brushing, making sure to clean every surface of your teeth.
2. Floss Daily
While brushing removes plaque from the surface of your teeth, flossing is essential for removing food particles and plaque from between your teeth and along the gum line. This crucial step in oral care helps prevent gum disease and cavities. Make it a habit to floss daily for optimal results.
3. Rinse with Mouthwash
Incorporating mouthwash into your oral care routine can further enhance your oral health. Mouthwashes with antibacterial properties help reduce plaque and gingivitis while freshening your breath. Choose an alcohol-free mouthwash to avoid drying out your mouth.
4. Eat a Balanced Diet
Your diet plays a significant role in your oral health. Incorporate plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and low-fat dairy products into your meals. Avoid sugary snacks and drinks that can lead to cavities. Choosing the right foods not only keeps your teeth healthy but also contributes to your overall health.
5. Stay Hydrated
Drinking plenty of water throughout the day is vital for maintaining a healthy mouth. Water helps wash away food particles and bacteria, preventing dry mouth—a condition that can lead to bad breath, cavities, and gum disease. Aim to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day.
6. Quit Smoking
Smoking is detrimental not only to your overall health but also to your oral health. It can lead to gum disease, tooth loss, and oral cancer. If you smoke, seek help to quit. Your mouth—and your entire body—will thank you for it.
7. Schedule Regular Dental Checkups
Regular dental visits are crucial for maintaining optimal oral health. The American Dental Association recommends that you see your dentist at least once every six months. During these checkups, your dentist can identify potential issues before they become serious. If you’re looking for the Best Dental Clinic in Kolkata, the Dean Dental Clinic offers comprehensive dental services to keep your smile healthy.
8. Choose the Right Dentist
Choose the right dentist who meets your needs and makes you feel comfortable is a key to maintaining oral health. Research local dental practices, read reviews, and consider visiting the clinic for an initial consultation. The Dean Dental Clinic is renowned for its patient-centric approach and cutting-edge technology. They stay updated on Latest Advances in Dental Technology, ensuring you receive the best care possible.
9. Protect Your Teeth
In activities that pose a risk of dental injury, such as sports, consider using a mouthguard. This simple step can prevent fractures, dislocations, or even tooth loss. If you grind your teeth at night, talk to your dentist about getting a custom night guard to protect your teeth from excessive wear.
10. Educate Yourself
Staying informed about oral health practices is vital for maintaining excellent dental hygiene. Participate in educational workshops, follow reputable dental health blogs, and consult your dentist if you have questions. Knowledge empowers you to make better decisions about your oral health.
Conclusion:
Achieving optimal oral health requires a commitment to proper care and regular dental visits. By following these top 10 tips, you can prevent problems before they arise and maintain a healthy, dazzling smile. Forgotten Items
Leona Kingscholar is a lot of things, but forgetful isn’t one of them. So why does he keep leaving behind his wallet at your dorm?
Leona Kingscholar x gn!reader. Unestablished relationship. Leona cares about you more than he wants to admit.

A significant amount of time had passed since you and Grim first started fixing up the guest room in Ramshackle Dorm. The two of you had worked tirelessly (or rather, you had done most of the work while that lazy furball lounged around devouring endless cans of tuna leaving the empty ones scattered everywhere, creating even more work for you…) But, despite the setbacks, you managed to gather the right materials and use your newly acquired magitool to craft intricate pieces of furniture. Eventually, you furnished the guest room exactly as you envisioned, feeling satisfied with how everything had come together.
But what was a guest room without guests? Naturally, you began inviting your friends over to hang out. The Heartslabyul duo, Ace and Deuce, were among the first, followed by plenty of others. Soon enough, you had a steady stream of visitors from all seven dorms
With guests came feedback, and you gladly considered their suggestions to improve the space. This was especially important to you because there was one particular guest you hadn’t invited just yet — this was none other than Leona Kingscholar, the notoriously picky Savanaclaw dorm leader.
You knew Leona had high standards when it came to his lounging spots, so you wanted to create a space even the particular lion prince would find comfortable. Once you were satisfied with the room’s cozy atmosphere, you extended more invitations — including one to Leona himself.
What was his reaction to the guest room you ask? Well in his exact words:
“Hm. It's less dusty than the lounge. Guess you're serious about hostin' people here.”
He said with a sly, teasing smile, his gaze sweeping over the room with apparent indifference. Sure, it wasn’t exactly glowing praise — but coming from Leona, you’d take it.
However, despite his seeming indifference to the room, after the first few invitations, Leona started showing up frequently — and unannounced. Not that you minded. In fact, you found it pretty amusing (and oddly endearing) to see the lion prince sprawled out on your couch, napping away as if the room were his own. Chances were, he was dodging his dorm leader responsibilities. Or maybe Ruggie’s nagging — but either way, you didn’t complain.
As more of your friends would visit you and use the space as either a hangout spot, a place to relax, or as a study room it wasn’t uncommon for them to leave things behind. Some of the things you would find ranged from Ace’s playing cards (that boy never tired of showing off his card tricks), Vil’s mauve nail polish, Ortho’s power cable, Jade’s tea guide and…Trey’s portable dental hygiene kit? (Okay…well someone certainly cares about their teeth it seems! That’s not weird at all…Good for him!)
Like the good host and friend you were, you always made sure to return everyone’s belongings as soon as you saw them again. And after misplacing their things a couple of times, most of your friends got the message and stopped forgetting their stuff so frequently.
Except for him…
Leona, for some reason, no matter how many times you returned his designer wallet, would always, always, always forget it somewhere in your guest room. It was strange, really. There was no way he was that careless. Aloof as he may be, he wasn’t the type to be so absentminded, especially with something as important as his wallet.
But, little did you know that the lion prince was doing it on purpose. Obviously, someone as observant as Leona wouldn’t constantly leave his belongings behind unless… it was intentional. And in this case, it definitely was. Just like how he’d “accidentally” overpay Ruggie or “carelessly” leave his wallet out in his room for his sticky fingers to find, he was doing the same thing with you. He wanted you to take the hint and use it to fix up this dingy dorm of yours. But you just weren’t getting it.
The first time you returned his wallet, he was a little confused but didn’t outright show it.
“My wallet? Oh, I left it in your dorm?… thanks I guess…”
Alright. Maybe it just didn’t click for you yet. He’d try again.
“Ah, again…thanks…”
The second time, he expected you to understand. But no. You just handed it back to him like before.
Fine. Maybe he had to be more obvious. This time, he’d leave it right in plain sight—on the coffee table that Grim had proudly dedicated to displaying his empty tuna cans (his contribution to the décor, if that wasn’t obvious enough).
But there you were, cleaning the guest room again only to find that once again, Leona had forgotten his wallet. You have to return it to him of course!
And so the cycle continued. Over and over again. Each time, he made it more obvious, certain that this time, you’d finally take the hint. But no. You just kept giving it back.
At this point, Leona was exasperated.
Alright, herbivore, just how dense are you?! Do you seriously need me to spell it out for you?! He thought internally.
He felt like his intentions were so obvious. But was he going to outright tell you? No, of course not. He’d rather keep up this nonsense than admit—out loud, that… he cared about you enough to want to subtly provide for you. He wanted you to have enough to buy yourself something nice, to make this dorm a little nicer, or even buy Grim that fancy tuna if it makes you happy. But since you were clearly too dense to understand, he’d just keep “forgetting” his wallet until you finally got the message.
Or were you really that dense?…
Little did the poor, frustrated lion prince know—you were well aware of what he was doing. You had figured it out long ago. But, well… watching the gradual frustration build on his face every time you handed his wallet back was just a little too entertaining for you to end the game so soon!
So, you decided to keep it going.
Whether you’d take pity on his frustration or wait until he finally snapped and admitted he cared about you—that remained to be seen. But for now, you were more than happy to let him suffer just a little bit longer.
✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦ ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦ .
Author’s Note: So I was struck with inspiration to write! My school work lessened up a bit too! I wrote this based off a post I saw that said that Leona leaving his wallet behind in the guest room in the game was really on brand for him. So, I came up with this! I hope you enjoy! - 🍬 (also posted to ao3 :)

A while back, I remember you talking about a toothbrush that was so good you almost didn't need to floss? Do you remember what toothbrush it was? Thank you!
Oh sure! Although you may be slightly misremembering, I've definitely posted about that.
For context, as with many people with ADHD I have trouble managing dental hygiene, and while I usually manage to brush twice a day, flossing is beyond me. Especially because I also have unusually sensitive gums -- I've had dentists in the past who were like "Yeah, I can see why you don't floss." There are some people for whom the whole "if you floss regularly it'll toughen your gums" thing simply isn't true. (It's...possible that's true for everyone, there have been very few actual studies with good data on the efficacy and impact of flossing.)
My current dentist recommended that if I wasn't going to floss, I should get an electric toothbrush -- she said any electric toothbrush is at least better than only manual brushing without flossing, but the Phillips Sonicare is the one she recommended. She said that using the Sonicare, as long as you use it for at least two minutes solid and make sure you hit your gumlines, was almost as good as flossing.
I think it's a great indication of how people who struggle with certain tasks and also the medical professionals treating them can sometimes focus so hard on what you ought to be doing that they miss what you are capable of doing -- sure it would probably actually be best if I flossed, but since that's not really on the table, my dentist and I chose to seek almost-as-good alternatives rather than just go back into the cycle of "I don't floss and you scold me for it" which dominated the first 35 years or so of my life. It's one of those perfect is the enemy of good things, where your options seem to be "success or failure" but are actually "success, moderate improvement, or failure".

I apologize for the long ask and if this question is a bit juvenile but objectively, how can one “gain” pretty privilege/gauge how they are viewed? I’ve done well in career pursuits for how early on I am ( I graduated in 2020) but started noticing that the invites to events/opportunities where one can really establish themselves not only professionally but socially, I was getting passed over by some higher up colleagues. In speaking to a female mentor who is related to my field and the same background as me (Black), she alluded that while my race may play a small factor in it, it’s more so my appearance that may be holding me back as the personality and poise is there. Some coworkers of mine who are brilliant and POC have similar credentials and positions as I and while we are all wonderful and hard working, they (who I feel are more beautiful and put together looks-wise) have discussed privately to me they have noticed a difference in treatment between us. While it’s not right, I am adult enough to know not to let things that can be fixed hinder the life I want. Your page is a wealth of information and I appreciate how encouraging you are!!
well. I’m going to be very blunt.
it’s all fun and games to say “oh fuck the beauty standards they’re terrible and they shouldn’t exist” yes, true, unfortunately they do exist and they play a bigger role than we imagine it to be.
the first thing you have to get right is your mindset.
you need to be strong enough to admit that you need changes in X, Y, Z area but not in A, B, C area. You also need to be a little loyal towards your racial identity (for the better or worse) because that’s what is going to make you stand out.
if you have a sensitive, overly emotional mindset and you get hurt very easily / become obsessive by nature, I highly recommend you to STOP reading now.
Understand what is considered pretty in your country and area. Even in one country, beauty standards can different from the north and south. Don’t exactly try to become attractive for the opposite sex but understand what they find attractive because these guys are your primary responders to your pretty privilege. Women will be kind on the surface and so it can be difficult to get constructive criticism from them.
Understand what YOU consider pretty. Who are the women who you think are crazy beautiful? What do they look like, dress like, how’s their hair and their make up, can you replicate any of it? Rule of thumb when it comes to hair and beauty - look at influencers / celebs who are of your racial background for the best fit.
there are always a few things that are universally considered “respectfully attractive” not “you wanna fuck me attractive”- semi modesty/ modesty outfits (my father always told me that when in doubt, go for a more conservative look), hygiene, well kept hair, clean nails and toe nails, soft skin, natural make up, natural hair colour, perfume, clothes that fit, skin care, a workout routine.
pretty privilege is not just the art of looking pretty. It’s also bringing in something of value on the table. Value = money / connections / knowledge/ humour / being the fun social person / whatever value the target group considers to be the most important for you to be relevant to them. Work on your soft skills. It’s better to look half baked but have solid soft skills than to look amazing and not know how to converse.
things that one normally notices when meeting someone new:
Skin - is it clear, is the make up overdone?
hair - is it messy or does it suit your face structure?
how you smell
teeth, when you talk - and dental hygiene
shoes - are they filthy?
shirt/ top - does it fit you well (always check that the seams on your shoulder and your actual shoulder line up), the colour of your clothes
body type, posture, how you carry yourself
start with incremental changes. Make a list of things you think you could improve on (this is not a list of “ugly” things, it’s an “improvement/ potential” list). Sort them according to ease of improvement (is this going to be expensive and difficult or affordable and easy?) and time (can this be done overnight or will it take some time).
Use point 1 and 2 only as launching pads. You do not have to look like Beyoncé, you’re simply understanding what her MUA and hair stylist does for her that could work for you. After a point, you have to ensure that YOUR identify sticks out and is still there, you’re not born to imitate someone else and also, it’s very obvious when someone is trying to be someone they’re not.
again. I repeat. If you’re going to get obsessive and make yourself sick over this it’s NOT WORTH IT. If you’re not mentally capable of making these changes, do not go through it.

Cannot stand what has happened. If people could just imagine being you in gaza, canaan that would make them care or to just look at what you have gone through and ask themselves would I want to be done this way? Here’s some dental related headcanons because my teeth are my biggest insecurity
Florida has literal shark teeth, but he takes decent care of them. Maybe it’s not daily but he does brush them often enough
OG 13 have strangely large canines and sharp incisors and premolars
New York dodges the dentist like a pro due to dental shame. He’s insecure in the fact he hasn’t taken much care of his teeth, especially after a dentist made comments about how many cavities he had to fill for him
California prides himself in his teeth. He takes very good care of them since he’s always been praised for his smile(motherfucker 🥊). He buys anything that’ll improve his teeth
Utah makes sure every kid in his house is at least brushing their teeth every day. The ones who don’t live at home anymore gets the questions of “are you brushing? Behind the teeth? Down to the gums?” when they call
Ohio has buck teeth. He’s not very insecure about them but he doesn’t take kindly to comments on it
Colorado definitely lost a tooth or two to sports, but otherwise he keeps them clean and healthy. Any lost or chipped teeth are taken in stride
Illinois has had literal dreams of his teeth falling out, anxious since he has a history of poor dental hygiene(he was depressed alright? It was an effort to maintain them)
Alaska’s teeth are actually good. California needs to know his secret
Massachusetts has crooked teeth
North Dakota has crowded teeth, where his upper cuspids kind of sit over his lateral incisors. He got it fixed though
Lots of the states have yellowed teeth for various reasons, food stains being the prevalent reason(smoking second probably)
Many states are missing or have replaced teeth. Here are some examples
Rhode Island has that amalgam filling in his left first molar, and is missing both his top canines(also silver)
Pennsylvania has a bridge(traditional) on his lower right teeth his. The crowns are on his canine and first molar
Georgia lost all his central incisors. He got replacements made with composite resin
New York has several fillings(lower second molars, upper right premolar, upper right first molar, lower left first molar). The older ones are filled with amalgam while the newer ones are composite resin. His right lateral incisor is missing
Alabama born(?) with hypodontia, specifically missing his upper lateral incisors
Colorado chipped his right central incisor and lateral incisor. He also shattered a premolar from getting slammed on his head in an accident and it grew back imperfectly, creating a very small gap in his teeth. Also his lower right cuspid is missing
Louisiana is missing his lower right lateral incisor
Ran out of steam but yeah
#teeth mention#not sure if I need to tag for that#wttt#welcome to the table#ben brainard#wttt headcanons

Story at-a-glance
Vitamin D3, synthesized from sunlight, plays a key role in oral health by promoting the remineralization of weakened tooth enamel, helping to reverse early-stage cavities and strengthen teeth
Research demonstrates that vitamin D3 improves calcium absorption and availability, which are essential for the natural repair and strengthening of tooth enamel, thus reducing cavity risk
Epidemiological research reveals a correlation between low vitamin D levels in adolescents and an increased risk of developing cavities, highlighting the importance of adequate vitamin D for dental health
Vitamin D contributes to healthy tooth development even before birth and strengthens your body's defenses against cavity-causing bacteria by boosting antimicrobial proteins in saliva
Maintaining optimal vitamin D levels through sun exposure or supplementation, combined with consistent oral hygiene practices, is essential for protecting and maintaining a healthy, strong smile

Everything You Need to Know About Fluoride Treatment for Healthy Teeth

Fluoride is the most effective agent available to help prevent tooth decay. It is a mineral that is naturally present in varying amounts in almost all foods and water supplies.
Topical fluoride strengthens the teeth once they have erupted by seeping into the outer surface of the tooth enamel, making the teeth more resistant to decay. We gain topical fluoride by using fluoride containing dental products such as toothpaste, mouth rinses, and gels. Dr. Poulos and My Scottsdale Dentist recommends that children have a professional application of fluoride twice a year during dental check-ups.
For healthier, stronger teeth, it's essential to include fluoride in your daily oral care routine. Fluoride plays a vital role in protecting your enamel and reducing the risk of cavities, and for many people, it's naturally added to public water supplies. Fluoride toothpaste is another common source of fluoride in your everyday hygiene. However, there are times when a dentist may recommend additional fluoride treatments to boost the protection and strength of your teeth.
We'll dive into what fluoride treatments are, why they're important, how they work, and the benefits they provide. Plus, we'll address some common concerns and questions people have about fluoride.
What Is Fluoride Treatment?
Fluoride treatment is a dental procedure where a dentist or hygienist applies a high concentration of fluoride to the teeth to improve their health and prevent cavities. It helps fortify tooth enamel, making your teeth more resistant to decay. Fluoride treatments can take the form of gels, foams, or varnishes that are applied directly to the teeth during a routine dental visit.
Fluoride treatments are often recommended for individuals who are at higher risk for dental cavities, such as those with dry mouth, poor oral hygiene, or a history of frequent tooth decay.
How Long Does Fluoride Treatment Last?
The effects of fluoride treatment typically last for several months, depending on the method used. For example, fluoride varnish—which is commonly applied during dental visits—can remain on the teeth for about 4 to 6 hours. During this time, the fluoride gets absorbed into the enamel, providing long-lasting protection.
Dentists usually recommend that fluoride treatments be repeated every 3 to 6 months to maintain the effectiveness, especially for individuals who have a higher risk of cavities.
The Benefits of Fluoride Treatments
Fluoride has numerous advantages when it comes to maintaining strong, healthy teeth. Here are some of the key benefits:
1. Helps Prevent Cavities and Tooth Decay
Fluoride treatment helps reduce the risk of cavities by reinforcing tooth enamel and preventing demineralization—the process that causes your enamel to break down. By making enamel stronger and more resistant to decay, fluoride treatment can reduce the chances of cavities forming.
2. Protects Tooth Enamel
Enamel is the outer protective layer of your teeth, and once it’s damaged, it doesn't grow back. Fluoride treatment helps protect and strengthen enamel, ensuring your teeth remain resilient against acids and bacteria in the mouth.
3. Reverses Early Stages of Tooth Decay
If you've noticed early signs of tooth decay (like small white spots on the enamel), fluoride treatments can help remineralize the enamel and even reverse early cavities, preventing them from becoming full-blown cavities that need fillings.
4. Reduces Acidity in the Mouth
Fluoride reduces the amount of acid in the mouth, which is produced by bacteria feeding on sugars. This is crucial because acidic environments can erode tooth enamel, leading to cavities and tooth decay.
5. Helps Mineralize Teeth
When fluoride is absorbed into the enamel, it helps restore vital minerals, such as calcium and phosphate, to the tooth surface. This remineralization process helps keep your teeth strong and resistant to future damage.
Are Fluoride Treatments Safe?
Yes, fluoride treatments are generally safe for most people. They’re commonly recommended by dental professionals and have been shown to be effective in reducing the risk of cavities. However, as with any dental procedure, there are a few things to keep in mind:
Allergic Reactions: Though rare, some individuals may have a mild allergic reaction to fluoride. If this occurs, it’s essential to let your dentist know immediately.
Fluorosis: One potential concern, especially for young children, is dental fluorosis, a condition caused by excessive fluoride intake during tooth development. This can result in white spots or streaks on the teeth. To prevent this, ensure children under the age of 6 don't swallow toothpaste containing fluoride and avoid fluoride supplements unless recommended by a dentist.
Fluoride is safe and beneficial when used in the proper amounts. Dentists carefully monitor fluoride treatment amounts to ensure there is no risk of overdose or side effects.
What Is Fluoride and How Does It Work?
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral found in water, soil, and some foods. It works by strengthening tooth enamel and making it more resistant to the acids that can lead to cavities. Fluoride can help reverse early tooth decay by stimulating the remineralization process—replacing lost minerals in the enamel.
Demineralization vs. Remineralization
Tooth enamel is constantly undergoing two processes: demineralization and remineralization. Demineralization occurs when acids produced by bacteria in the mouth attack enamel, causing it to lose minerals. Remineralization happens when minerals like fluoride, calcium, and phosphate are redeposited into the enamel, helping to repair and strengthen it. Fluoride plays a critical role in promoting remineralization and stopping the cycle of damage that leads to tooth decay.
Types of Fluoride Used in Dentistry
Many foods and water contain fluoride. You can also purchase fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash. You can buy low-strength fluoride mouthwash over the counter. Stronger concentrations in liquid or tablet form need a healthcare provider’s prescription.
Varnish, which they’ll paint directly on your teeth.
Gel, which they’ll either paint on your teeth or dispense in a custom tray.
Foam, which they’ll dispense into a custom tray, then place over your teeth.
At what age is fluoride intake most important?
Infants and children between the ages of 6 months and 16 years need an appropriate amount of fluoride. Developing teeth benefit from fluoride just as much as teeth that have already erupted (grown in).
The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends watching the intake of too much fluoride in infants and young children. The ADA specifically recommends avoiding reconstituted liquid formulas, such as liquid concentrate or powdered baby formulas that require mixing with fluoridated water.
Instead, the ADA recommends breast milk (chest milk), ready-to-feed formula or prepared formula mixed with fluoride-free water. These recommendations are to guard against enamel fluorosis — faint white streaks that can appear on tooth enamel during a child’s developmental years, even before the teeth erupt through the gums.
For young children, the ADA also recommends:
Using a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste at each brushing.
Spitting out rather than swallowing the toothpaste.
Not allowing children under age 6 to use fluoride mouth rinses unless recommended by a dentist or other healthcare provider.
Not giving fluoride-containing dietary supplements to children under 6 months of age.
Do Adults Benefit from Fluoride?
Absolutely! While fluoride is often associated with children, adults can also benefit from fluoride treatments, especially if they face oral health challenges like:
Dry Mouth (Xerostomia): A common condition caused by certain medications or health issues that leads to reduced saliva production, making the teeth more vulnerable to decay.
A History of Tooth Decay: If you have frequent cavities, fluoride treatments can offer extra protection for your teeth.
Gum Disease or Braces: These can expose more of your teeth and make them more prone to decay, so fluoride can help prevent cavities in these vulnerable areas.
What are the benefits of fluoride?
Fluoride strengthens teeth and reduces your risk of cavities by approximately 25%.
Remineralizes your tooth enamel.
Reverses early tooth decay.
Slows down the process of demineralization.
Prevents the growth of cavity-causing bacteria.

Is fluoride toxic?
When used properly, fluoride is safe and effective. But it can be hazardous at high doses.
Avoid flavored toothpaste. (Children are more likely to swallow flavored toothpaste.)
Use only a pea-sized amount of fluoridated toothpaste on your child’s toothbrush.
Be cautious about using fluoridated toothpaste in children under age 6. (Children under 6 years of age are more likely to swallow toothpaste instead of spitting it out.)
It’s very difficult to reach dangerous fluoride levels due to the low levels of fluoride in over-the-counter products. But if you have concerns, talk to your dentist, pediatrician or primary care provider (PCP).
How Often Should You Have Fluoride Treatments?
The frequency of fluoride treatments depends on your personal oral health needs. Generally, people with a higher risk of cavities may need fluoride treatments every 3 to 6 months. If you're someone who is not prone to decay and maintains good oral hygiene, treatments once a year might suffice.
Are there risks or side effects of fluoride?
The most common side effect of fluoride is fluorosis (fluoride-induced tooth discoloration). People with fluorosis develop spots on their teeth that can range from light white to dark brown. These spots typically occur during tooth development, usually in children under the age of 6.
Fluorosis most often results from consuming naturally occurring fluoride, like that found in well water. If you have well water, testing a sample can help determine how much fluoride is in your water.
You can’t brush fluorosis away, but a dentist might be able to use special bleaching methods to address the issue. If professional whitening doesn’t work, you can opt for dental bonding or porcelain veneers.
Conclusion
Fluoride treatments are a powerful tool for maintaining optimal dental health. They help protect enamel, prevent cavities, and even reverse early stages of decay. While fluoride is generally safe and beneficial, it’s important to follow your dentist’s advice about how much fluoride you need, particularly for children and adults with specific oral health needs.
Is fluoride good for your teeth?
Yes. When used properly, fluoride is one of the best ways to strengthen your enamel and reduce your risk of cavities. Ask your dentist for product recommendations and how often you should get fluoride treatments.

Life Hack: Oil pulling
This is a life hack to take more proper care of our oral hygiene and is something that I am actually testing out, and I can actually see incredible results in only one week.
What is oil pulling?
Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic practice that involves swishing oil around in your mouth for several minutes to promote oral health. The process is believed to draw out toxins from the body and improve dental hygiene. The scientific community has mixed opinions on oil pulling. Some small studies have shown reductions in oral bacteria, plaque, and gingivitis, comparable to mouthwash. However, more extensive and rigorous studies are needed to confirm these benefits conclusively.
What are the benefits that oil pulling can have on you?
Improved Oral Hygiene: It is said to reduce plaque, gingivitis, and bad breath.
Whitening of Teeth: Regular practice is believed to help whiten teeth.
Detoxification: Proponents claim it helps detoxify the body, although scientific evidence supporting this is limited only to the part of the mouth.
Relief from Jaw Pain: Some report reduced jaw pain and improved jaw strength.
How do i do oil pulling?
Choose your oil: Coconut oil is a popular choice due to its antimicrobial properties. even though every vegetable oil can be good for this practice.
Measure a tablespoon: Use about a tablespoon or two of oil.
Swish the oil: Swish it around your mouth for 15-20 minutes. Make sure not to swallow it. and it is suggested to do this first thing in the morning to get rid of all the bacteria that accumulates throughout the night. (This is the part that makes your jaw pain go away because you actually exercise your mouth muscles while you do that.)
Spit it out: Spit the oil into a trash can (not the sink, as it can clog pipes).
Rinse and brush: Rinse your mouth with water and then brush your teeth as usual.
Oil pulling is generally considered safe, but it should not replace traditional oral care practices like brushing and flossing.
My thoughts and experiences:
I always had problems keeping my oral igine costant because of my adhd. Since I started oil pulling, not only did I see an improvement in my teeth, as they are more white, but I also saw an improvement in my routine because, in general, I see it as an easy way to clean my teeth, which includes actually brushing my teeth. i also have notice improvements with my jawline but that could be the gua sha too.

root canal pt. 1 of 2 complete. I have extremely shitty dental hygiene and have been living in fear of like, needing six root canals and the rest of my teeth crumbling irreparably my entire adult life, so it was actually kind of reassuring to learn that the actual physical procedure of a root canal is like, fine.
I expected it to be torture, but honestly it was pretty dentistry standard. The biggest difference between root canal and a deep filling was that they use a little rubber mat to isolate the tooth, which means you're not getting constantly waterboarded by the spray-y wand, which is honestly a huge improvement as someone who struggles to breathe through their nose. The worst part was probably the pressure of him poking the file-y things into the canals, but honestly that was Also Fine, it was just like 'damn how deep are you gettin in there'.
I feel like a lot of posts go around exhorting (and therefore kind of backhand shaming if you don't) depressed people to Have Better Dental Hygiene so this post is more intended to be like 'hey, sometimes you've neglected your teeth for decades, and even that isn't so bad'. Obviously money is a huge factor, but provided you have the means to access dental treatment, don't avoid it out of shame. It's mildly inconvenient and scrapey, but it's not Literal Hell and you most likely will not need a full mouth of extractions.
#I'm putting this in the tags because I'm ashamed but deadly serious about not feeling Dental Shame#I probably brush my teeth once a month on average. And I don't floss. AND I drink a tonne of soda.#I've needed a few fillings in my life and now one root canal#Part of that is genetic luck but I would like to use my position to gently cup your face and say:#'your dental hygiene? Is not that bad.'#No dentist I have ever been to has EVER mentioned it.#so if I can get away with that you should not feel shame at all. and do not be afraid of the dentist. It's Fine.

Did You Know? Your Mouth Produces Over 25,000 Liters of Saliva in a Lifetime
Saliva is one of the most underrated yet essential fluids produced by the human body. Over the course of a lifetime, the average person produces more than 25,000 liters of saliva — enough to fill two swimming pools! While saliva might seem like a mundane topic, it plays a vital role in maintaining your oral health and overall well-being. Let’s explore this fascinating subject in depth.
What is Saliva and Why is it Important?
Saliva is a clear, watery fluid secreted by the salivary glands in your mouth. Composed mostly of water, it also contains essential enzymes, proteins, minerals, and antibacterial compounds that help maintain oral and overall health. Here are some key functions of saliva:
Protects Your Teeth and Gums: Saliva neutralizes acids in your mouth, helping to prevent tooth decay and gum disease.
Aids in Digestion: It contains enzymes like amylase that help break down carbohydrates before swallowing.
Moistens and Lubricates: Saliva ensures that your mouth stays moist, making it easier to chew, swallow, and speak.
Fights Bacteria: Its antimicrobial properties combat harmful bacteria, reducing the risk of infections.
Supports Taste Sensation: Without saliva, your ability to taste food would be significantly diminished.
How Does Saliva Production Work?
Saliva is produced by three major pairs of salivary glands:
Parotid Glands: Located near the ears, these glands produce a watery secretion rich in enzymes.
Submandibular Glands: Found under the lower jaw, these glands produce a mix of enzymes and mucus.
Sublingual Glands: Situated beneath the tongue, these glands produce a mucus-rich saliva.
In addition to these, minor salivary glands throughout the mouth contribute to saliva production. On average, a healthy person produces about 1 to 1.5 liters of saliva per day.
25,000 Liters Over a Lifetime: Why So Much?
Producing over 25,000 liters of saliva in a lifetime may seem excessive, but when broken down, it makes sense:
Daily Production: Roughly 1.5 liters per day.
Lifespan: Over 70 years, this adds up to the astounding total of 25,000 liters or more.
Saliva production is continuous but varies throughout the day. It increases when eating, drinking, or even thinking about food and decreases during sleep. This consistent production is crucial for keeping your mouth healthy and functioning.
What Happens When Saliva Production is Insufficient?
A lack of adequate saliva, known as xerostomia or dry mouth, can lead to a range of oral health issues, including:
Increased risk of cavities and gum disease
Difficulty in chewing, swallowing, and speaking
Bad breath (halitosis)
Altered sense of taste
Dry mouth can result from dehydration, medication side effects, or underlying medical conditions. If you experience persistent dry mouth, consult a dental professional.
Dental Hygienist vs Dentist: What’s the Difference?
While both dental hygienists and dentists work to improve oral health, their roles differ significantly.
Dental Hygienist
A dental hygienist specializes in preventative care, focusing on maintaining oral health. Their responsibilities include:
Performing professional teeth cleanings
Educating patients on proper oral hygiene practices
Taking X-rays and assessing gum health
Applying fluoride treatments and sealants
Dentist
Dentists are medical professionals trained to diagnose and treat oral diseases and conditions. Their tasks include:
Filling cavities and treating tooth decay
Performing root canals, crowns, and extractions
Diagnosing oral diseases like gum disease or oral cancer
Developing comprehensive treatment plans
Both professionals are essential in ensuring optimal oral health, working together to provide comprehensive care. Deepak Kansal, a skilled dental hygienist, emphasizes the importance of regular cleanings and proper oral hygiene as the foundation for a healthy smile. Learn more about his work at www.deepakkansal.com.
How to Support Saliva Production Naturally
Ensuring healthy saliva production is key to maintaining oral health. Here are some tips:
Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your salivary glands active.
Chew Sugar-Free Gum: Stimulates saliva flow, especially after meals.
Consume a Balanced Diet: Foods rich in vitamins and minerals, like fruits and vegetables, promote salivary gland health.
Avoid Tobacco and Alcohol: These can dry out your mouth and reduce saliva production.
Use a Humidifier: Helps maintain moisture in your mouth, especially while sleeping.
Fascinating Facts About Saliva
Saliva contains enzymes that begin digestion right in your mouth.
It plays a crucial role in wound healing within the oral cavity.
The average person swallows around 2,000 times a day, with saliva playing a major role in this process.
Saliva can be used for diagnostic purposes, including detecting diseases like diabetes and even COVID-19.
Final Thoughts
Saliva is much more than a simple liquid in your mouth. Its protective, digestive, and antibacterial properties are essential for overall health. By staying hydrated, practicing good oral hygiene, and consulting professionals like Deepak Kansal, Dental Hygienist, you can ensure your mouth remains healthy for years to come.
