Can you tell me why Frodo is so important in lotr? Why can't someone else, anyone else, carry the ring to mordor?

that’s the whole point of frodo—there is nothing special about him, he’s a hobbit, he’s short and likes stories, smokes pipeweed and makes mischief, he’s a young man like other young men, except for the singularly important fact that he is the one who volunteers. there is this terrible thing that must be done, the magnitude of which no one fully understands and can never understand before it is done, but frodo says me and frodo says I will.

(when boromir is thinking of how he can use the ring to defend gondor, when aragorn is thinking of how it brought down proud isildur, when elrond is holding council and gandalf is thinking of how twisted he would become, if he ever dared—)

but then there’s frodo, who desires nothing except what he has already left behind him, and says, I will take the Ring.

it is an offer made out of absolute innocence, utter sincerity. It is made without knowing what it will make of him—and frodo loses everything to the ring, he loses peace and himself and the shire, he loses the ability to be in the world. It’s cruel, the ring is cruel, it searches out every weakness you have and feeds on it, drinks you dry and fills you with its poison instead, the ring is so cruel.

and frodo picks it up willingly. for no other reason except that it has to be done.

(the ring warps boromir into a hopeless grasping dead thing, the power of the palantir turns denethor into an old man, jealous and suspicious, it bends even saruman, once the proudest of the istari, into a mechanised warlord, sitting in his fortress and bent over his perverse creations—all the best of intentions, laid waste)

but there’s a reason gollum exists in the narrative, which is to show—well, to show what frodo might have been. because even as frodo grows mistrustful and wearied, as the burden of this ring grows heavier and heavier, he is never gollum. he is gentle to gollum. he is afraid—god frodo is so afraid for 2/3 of these books he is so tired and afraid, but he keeps moving, he walks though it would pull him into the ground, because he asked for this, he said he would.

someone else could have carried the ring to mordor, I suppose. the idea of a martyr is not dependent on the particular flesh and blood person dying for some greater purpose. but such a thing has to be chosen, lifted onto your shoulders for the right reason, the truest reasons, and followed into the dark, though it would see you burnt through and bled out.

favorite thing about them

His sense of humour. It's dark and dry. Absolutely spot on. He's so understated and quiet, and I just love that about him.

Also, his loyalty to Price. That co-dependent loyal attack dog and handler shit does it for me. Makes the hottest, most desperate smut, and some of the hardest hitting relationship dynamics.

I think Ghost balances on the precipice of self implosion, all his wounds are still open, but they're hidden deep, the proverbial blood being soaked up by that bally. The only thing standing between Ghost and the abyss is a shitty Mohawk, a tacky baseball cap, and a boonie hat holding them all together.

least favorite thing about them

Not really least favourite, but most challenging to portray. Ghost doesn't trust anyone. Not even Johnny or Price. I think deep down he is waiting for them to turn on him too, because it would be life's final laugh at his expense. It would be the end of him, it would tear him to pieces, and once his mag was empty, he'd reload and put the final shot in his own head. Just how quickly he starts shooting Shadows when they betray him, no hesitation. Savage.

In my view, the problem with being brought up in an environment where the people you love (and are meant to love you) are constantly hurting you is that you think the two are linked. It's part and parcel for Price and Johnny to eventually betray him because that's what love is. He's just trying to savour it a little without letting his guard down. It's a constant war in his head between his trauma and his desperate desire to trust and heal.

His moral compass is fucked. Absolutely, well and truly. He uses Price's on loan. Ghost knows he is, and sees himself as, a bad guy, but that's only partially his fault (he could do the work to heal after all). He is hugely fucking traumatised, and the Ministry of Defence gave him a gun.

I want Genesis to go mad scientist.

Genesis, who misses Angeal and Sephiroth so much that he's willing to "Play Hojo" to get them back.

First, he brings back Angeal. Angeal is deeply uncomfortable with it. He shouldn't be alive and he knows it. Maybe for fun, Angeal still remembers being dead.

Bringing Sephiroth back is harder. His mind was so fragile, and then so corrupted by JENOVA that they need to use his physical body to get rid of the...mess made of his soul.

In order to try and "fix" Sephiroth's mind he tries to rework his memories. According to Sephiroth's memories, he had been in a coma for like, eight years after an accident in Nibelheim (when Sephiroth learns Genesis was there, and there was a fire his immediate response is "What did you DO, Genesis?!"). He already knew his mother, Doctor Lucrezia Crescent, years before the incident, but no one knows what happened to her.

Angeal doesn't like lying to Sephiroth, but he admits that it's better than losing him to instability. (Sephiroth still gets flashes of things he doesn't remember. And probably eventually runs into Cloud while running errands or something)

Well, it's obvious what you should do now.

You proceed deeper into the ruins, past fluted columns and corroded copper machinery. The sense of stillness that pervades the place is giving you the willies, but you're sure if you just keep going, you'll eventually find your partner and daughter.

One thing you do find is the letter R, fallen from one of the carved signs reminding you of the name of the AORETH RUINS. You dutifully add it to your inventory. D, C, O, H, O, 7, X, O, A, R. What if these could be used somehow?

The place seems totally empty, but there's a few hallucinations you might be able to mine for ideas:

A pool of- it's gotta be hallucinatory water, you're already underwater- is playing A POOL'S PEACE LEITMOTIF, a nice little piano theme that makes you feel relaxed.

There's a small group of environmentalists who've pivoted into organized crime! Stealing from the birch to feed the pear! Should you OPPOSE LITTLE ECO-MAFIA?

There's a smaller palace inside this ruined palace that seems to be made entirely of plant matter, which seems like it'd pop into nothingness if you touched it. I POOF MISTLETOE PALACE?
