January 3, 2023 Happy New Year, all! Not much to report from our New Year’s Eve—we stayed in and shared a bottle of halfway decent sparkling rose from Sula, one of the Indian wineries.
Made it to New Year’s barely- and when that struck, we were glad we’d decided to stay in. The fireworks were pretty intense (and without regulation, I’m sure.) It sounded like bombs going off at the party across the street.
We did return to our new favorite place Housewood Villas on New Year’s Night for a celebratory drink and some of their truly amazing food (including a mushroom soup that would have sent my dear old dad into rapture.)
As we left, a guy at the host station (who had neither greeted us, seated us, or had anything else to do with us) said “I need tip.” I asked, “For what?” Foreigners are rare here- I know that by how I am stared at everywhere I go. That doesn’t bother me. But the assumption that David and I are handing out cash to everyone we encounter does get challenging sometimes.
Yesterday, we visited the SSSS College of the Arts for Women where I will be doing some teaching while we are here. In 2018, when I visited Amritsar, I met Ms. Manpreet Kaur (then a teacher at Khalsa College for Women.) She and I have stayed in touch, and she facilitated a letter of invitation from SSSS College, where she now serves on the board since retirement. She is a force of nature and a force for good.
Greeting Manpreet after four years with a big hug:
This college is very different from Khalsa College. It is in a part of the city where young people, and especially young women, usually do not get the chance to go to college. All students are on scholarship, as their families do not have the funds to pay the fees (about $150 U.S.)I didn’t meet the students, as they are currently in exams. But I hope that by working with them on theatre exercises and “taking up a little more space in the world with their voices” (one of my favorite mottoes)—I can contribute in some small way to the important work that Manpreet and co-coordinator Shaveta are doing.
