All Just a Dream

The reveal that a certain plotline was all a dream.

Propaganda:

It immediately kills all stakes, breaks audience immersion, and basically makes the case 'you should never have been invested in that plotline'. An incredibly unsatisfying ending.

It's just so lazy and makes everything pointless! What changed? Everyone is exactly the same as before the story. Not to mention that's not how dreams work, unless you immediately write it down you're gonna forget the vast majority of the dream really quick, if you even remember it at all. And dreams are messy and don't make sense, they jump from location to location and don't follow a coherent plot. If a character is dreaming, it should be very obvious because they're so different from reality.

😞I'm so disappointed with this one. I dislike the wording and the illustrations. I'm frustrated with the fact that the main text doesn't introduce Harry Houdini by his full name at first. Only calling him young Ehrich, his name was Ehrich Weisz/Weiss for 16 years. The pacing of the story feels off as in there are jumps, though that may have actually happened. It just all feels a bit off for me.

I adore the expression Vido has used on Houdini on the cover and the broken link in the chain as a focal point. One thing I will give Vido is she has a gift for expressions, Houdini is one of the more expressive subjects in an LPBD book (think actually seeing 🤨 frequently). She did a great job maintaining his freckles too. I really like the outfits Bess is in, and I really want them so pretty. But it is the wider scenes that I have issues with. They are bright but disjointed. That might suit him, given his prolific travelling as he tries to make a name for himself. But somehow they just don't work for me, that and the style a more sketchy one just isn't for me. I do like the end pages though chains, handcuffs and padlocks and yellows and whites on black.

On the design (done by Karissa Santos) there are some moments where the contrast is awful. Black writing on a dark blue or dark red background might be ok for younglings but for adults, it might be difficult for adults to read if this is being read as a bedtime story.
