Solace lingers in the cold walls of the morgue this evening. Though most would consider a place like this one to be eerie, Celeste finds it to be the opposite. There’s a secret she knows that most of the living are lost on, she knows there’s comfort in the company of the dead. Luckily for the witch, there’s no shortage of death in a town like Port Leiry. Death harbored different forms and there’s  two she knows well. The undead and the dead dead.

Both had their purposes.

Tonight, she’s working late on a  dead dead decedent, preparing him for the funeral he is owed tomorrow morning. What is lost on Celeste is sympathy, that’s disappeared long before her days at the morgue. She won’t even try to fake it for this one below her. He’s got wrinkled skin and white hair. Whether he had lead a full and happy life is meaningless. The only thing worth noting is, that it was long. Longer than what a lot of people get in this life.

She’s so lost in her work, Celeste doesn’t hear her mentor enter the room. Blame it on her concentration or blame it on the music blaring out of her Airpods. They both play a role in her distraction. 

“Jesus Christ,” she breathes out when she catches him in the corner of her eye. For a split second, she mistakes him for a ghost. Stranger things have happened.  “You startled me,” Celeste continues when she’s caught her breath and pulls out her earbuds.  “I could’ve sworn you said you were taking off for the night.”

( jenna ortega / cis female / she/her ) — CELESTE LADRÒN  has been living in Port Leiry for TWENTY TWO YEARS. They currently work as a BUDTENDER AT HIGH HOPES, and are TWENTY TWO years old. No one is sure if they’re actually a WITCH or if they’re connected to FENG-LINDON  They tend to be quite SELFISH and CRUEL, but can also be CUNNING and VIGILANT.

tldr: when she was a baby, her entire family was killed by a hunter. as she's grown up, she's had a morbid curiosity with death. so much so.... she wants to trade in her witch card for a vampire one.

they say you were born angry. that you were born cruel. for a long time, you believed them. that this is what you had always been, what you would have always been. now, you know that isn't true. monsters aren't born. they are created.

like how bees are drawn to flowers, you were a little girl attracted to death. your interest in destruction would come later, but you had an affinity for forgotten roadkills, bloodied corpses, and the town cemetery you'd pass by everyday on your way home for as long as you could remember.

perhaps, it's because you became acquainted with it early on. you're the last of your lineage. mother, father, sister, brother, aunt, and uncle, anyone who could've held the ladròn name are gone and that's no accident. no fluke. it took calculation. it took time. it took execution.

you're the fluke.

you've known this your entire life. not every point needs an explanation. there's always been an understanding that you should've died with the rest of them. you've never been grateful for your survival. sometimes, you believe it would've been best for you to follow them.

what good is it being a witch? what good is it to have all the magic at the tips of your finger, if it can't save you? maybe it isn't anger that lingers in your chest, maybe it's resentment. if they had been stronger. if they had been skilled. if they had been something else, maybe they'd still be here. is it better to be the hunter rather than the hunted?

yes, you carry this obsession with death. as the years go on, it's evolved into an obsession with the living dead. you, little witch, have a curiosity with vampires. how wonderful would it be to shake hands with death and come back to tell the tale?
