Thieves in Inaba Part 82

Footsteps of the user group echo through the mostly empty halls. Metallic clangs of Agis and Labrys’ feet mix in with the steps of the humans. The air had grown unnervingly tense since their take down of the Strega duo. Garbled muttering from shadows seemed to be much too far off to be a threat.

But Ren is unfocused, as if a sound was constantly playing in his head. Shrugging it off upon realizing no one else was reacting, he chalks it up to stress. A faint humm sounds not to far away.

“Yo, are those the trip lasers from Madarame’s?” Ryuji points out, causing the others to stop in their tracks.

“This is familiar, yes.” Yusuke nods, looking closely at the device.”But why would this be here?”

“Well regardless, it’s blocking our way to the stairs.” Minato points out. “But we can’t see where the triggers are so we’ll be going in this blindly.”

“Not really, I can see them.” Ren smirks. “It’s…one of my own personal perks. Third Eye and all.”

“What? So some of you wild cards have special skills that only you can do? Okay that’s so unfair…” Yosuke shake his head before refocusing. “Well regardless, we’ll need to follow your lead.”

Ren concentrates and nods. “Crawl, but keep as low to the ground as you can.”

With that he and the Thieves go through easy. But the others are a bit wary. Koromaru goes in, crawling as low as a shiba could. But Labrys realizes she can’t crawl and have her axe with her at the same time.

“Well great…how am I gonna get by? My axe is too big.” She shakes her head.

“Just watch and learn.” Sho laughs, crawling with no trouble.

Pretty soon everyone figures out a way, more or less… until only Yosuke remains.

“Okay, if Teddie could get by I should have this easy!” He starts to go, only for Ren to hold up a hand.

“You’re close to triggering it Hanamura be careful and don-” But he suddenly pauses again. The sound in his head becomes just a bit louder…and it sounds like a church bell sounding off in a ominous manner.

Yosuke looks worried by his sudden pause. “D-Did I set it off?!”

The Phantom shakes his head. “N-No…it’s just…my head…”

Yosuke gets low and makes it across, going over to check him. “You don’t look so hot man…”

Akechi holds his head slightly, seemingly trying to keep his own pain hidden to save face. “Do any of you…hear that ringing at all?”

The group shakes their heads…except for Ren.

“Just the two of us then…”

Making it through the lasers, the group soon finds them selves at a stair well…with footsteps heard above. A whole group.

But the ringing…Ren and Akechi can’t stop hearing it. And it’s now started to be heard by Yu and Minato as well.

Sho being the only one out of the five to not be affected, looks at them with confusion. “You guys aren’t all wimping out right now are you?”

“Guys…stay on guard.” Yosuke states, drawing his kunai. “Our foe might be trying to pull something again…”

The Maze of the Holding Block

Ryoji calmly leads the captives through the maze, but as they walk his posture depicts reluctance and frustration. He’s got something on his mind, but doesn’t wish to speak it aloud.

This doesn’t go unnoticed by Sojiro however. Despite still being wary of the young man, he felt he had to ask. So with a quiet nod, he decides to. “Say, everything alright kid? You’ve been a bit quiet for about twenty minutes now.”

“Me?” Ryoji asks, seemingly snapping out of his thoughts. “Yeah I’m fine, don’t worry. Just trying to stay on guard in case a shadow attacks us.”

“But they haven’t, not since you’ve been guiding us.” Hifumi points out, arms crossed.

Ryoji is silent once again, which only creates more questions about him for the group as a whole.

The Fox sniffs Ryoji, growling slightly.

“Not a very friendly Fox are you?” Ryoji states in a slightly glum yet hushed tone. “Believe me, I get why..”

Stair Well To Next Block

“Can you all describe what’s going on?!” Mitsuru asks, worry pouring into her voice like water.

“It’s like…bells.” Yu states, trying his best to focus on the conversion despite the sound’s increasing volume in his and the other’s heads.

“It has the same feeling as….in the Castle.” Minato winces. “But is he trying to take control…or just madden us?”

“B-Both..I’d wager.” Akechi adds. “When you two stabbed us…it must have…passed on something to-”

But his statement is cut short by Ren drawing his pistol on him. The air is suddenly cold, as it seems Ren subccomed to it first.

Meanwhile in Tokyo, the fortune teller checks Ren’s fate again and gasps.

“The Chariot…he will take a risk…and it may prove bad..”

“Didn’t you mention him before? He’s connected to Ren right? What’ll happen?” Ohya looks worried.

“He will take another shot…fired by his own friend.”

Joker smirks, reading his gun. Ryuji moves to push Akechi out of the way. He wouldn’t do this normally, not to a person who’d killed so many. But he just felt he had to…no he must. His death means the real villain wins…

“Revenge is sweet.” The controlled Ren laughs.

A gasp is heard from the teller. “The cards feel wrong suddenly!”

She re does the fortune. “It still feels off. Fool is here yes…but it feels like…there should be more…”

“Then he has like minded people among him.” An older man’s voice states, walking up to the do.

“You’re Yoshida! But what is a politician doing out here?” Ohya asks, confuesed.

“Checking up on the people who are still out..” He nods. “Ren aided me as well. So I figured I’d help once more…by placing my trust that he will make it through this.”

Yu and Minato try their hardest to fend off the frenzied Ren, blocking gunshots and knife swipes.

“They’re fighting him and the control?! That’s gonna put a lot of strain on them!” Rise points out. “At that rate…they won’t be able to use their Persona.”

Sho nods, parrying attacks as Akechi too subcomes to the control. “I think that’s the point. They’re gonna brute force it.”

“It’s all they can do really..” Yosuke shakes his head. “Weaken Ren and Akechi! Toss as many debuffs as you can! Slow their impact.”

The training center feels heavy with the same air. Sae looks around. “I have a bad feeling suddenly…” She looks out a window to notice a faint glow from the tower. “That can’t be good…”

“Snap out of it Ren!” Yu yells, trying to parry his strikes. “You know what’s going on!”

The fortune shifts again.

“The fool…will be hurt.”

“PARTNER!” Yosuke pushes Yu out of the way, taking the hit himself.

“Yosuke! NGH! …no…you won’t win… I refuse!” Yu shakes off the pain in his head and goes to attack Ren.

Yosuke holds his stomach. “Keep the debuffs going! It’s working!”

Sho and Akechi exchange strikes. “For a bird brain with a toy sword you sure have some skill, I’ll give you that. But I still call myself the better between us.”

“Don’t buff the wild cards.” Mitsuru states, drawing her evoker. “Should they fall under control it won’t be good.”

Minato nods. “Mitsuru, now would be a good time to try Mari Karin. It might shake off the control.”

Ohya and Yoshida observe as the fortune is checked again very carefully.

“The outcome keeps switching between positive and negative.”

“Yo! If they’re moving too much to get it off, I can try paralyzing them!” Ryuji suggests.

“Are you sure? You’d be attacking Ren…” Futaba states, worried.

“I know…but if it saves him in the end then I can deal with the guilt later.”

Kanji steps up and places a hand on Ryuji’s shoulder. “Let me help then. We only have a slight chance of doing it right?”

“Yeah. Let’s do it.”

They stand shoulder to shoulder.

“Seiten Taisei!”

“Takeji Zaiten!”

Last day of the year. I’ll be working like an asshole. I need to innovate my way out of this.

How long have I been saying that?

I found some old goal sheets going through stuff yesterday:

“Piano virtuoso” - I don’t even have a keyboard in the house to mess with. Haven’t played on anything since I was in Alaska.

“Published writer” - ain’t done shit with that. Although I do love writing and of course it’s always on the list. Been working on lyrics one line at a time haha

So, it got me depressed to look at these things. But goddamn if it doesn’t have me inspired also.

I hate being one of those ‘new year new me’ people but I just want to use the new year as a springboard to gain some momentum on what I already have going.

I’ve got some pain in my neck for the last two or probably three days. Probably from sleeping in a weird bed for the last few nights, maybe the stress from seeing Saul again (whether I relapse it or not?), and also from Axxxxx ending things again due to my past transgressions (this time involving her cousin; remind me to tell you the story)

I’ve been sleeping in weird beds for quite some time now.

My brother and Saul have their homes. They’ve had that base for years. I’ve always been moving, albeit in Orlando, every couple of years.

I’ve had a storage space in the same building since January 2012. So this place is basically my home haha. Also all my shit is here. So yes.

Spent some time at the space. Took pics of the rest of the records I found at the vinyl garage sale at BAMF

Been trying to hang with my girl Genesis the whole weekend. She was gonna stay last night but didn’t. Tonite is also supposed to happen, but now I’m gonna meet up with Axxxxx as, she always takes precedence haha. And she’ll be done early because she has to wake up early.

And Genesis is flaky, but she seems to want to.

Hung out with Axxxxx fur a good chunk of time. We went to our usual rounds: goodwill, Walmart, Ross, DD, Plato’s closet. We had some good laughs and she even touched me when joking. She hasn’t really been like that since we started hanging again.

I wonder what it means. Is she opening back up to me? Shall we continue down this road?

She wants to go to Disney on Wednesday or Thursday when I’m off. I’m down always to spend some time with her.

Waiting in line at my P.O. Box post office. Apparently I have a windfall of packages being held back there. Which isn’t too uncommon but it says there’s something too big for the box. Which everything is too big for the box, that’s why they have the lockers.

My sister sent me a snap asking when I was coming to Bradenton for Christmas. I have to respond.

She’s going through a divorce. Well she’s at the end of it. She’s ok, so no worries. She didn’t want to get married in the first place.

I just texted her ex husband Ryan. I’ve always liked the kid.

Long story short the divorce is probably gonna work out for my mother in terms of her health because now the three grandchildren won’t be there half the week.

Ryan wrote back. He’s ok, and appreciative I wrote. Well good.

So, once again the universe works in interesting ways. I decided to take the scenic route to my space from my P.O. Box; I wanted to drive by where the old studio apartment I used to live (c. 2004) in was. It’s since become a 4 unit rental property. But I wanted to drive by it for the nostalgia.

So I get to where it is, and one house over, on the corner house, I see the Sushi and Seoul on a Roll sushi truck parked in the driveway.

This truck is own by one Alfred Ruiz, also known to me and Aaron Tobin as our ex best friend and one time bandmate.

A rush of blood came over me. Perpetuated by the fact that as I drove by, Al himself walked out of the house and popped into the truck, presumable with some provisions in tow under his arm.

I drove on by.

Halfway up the road I said to myself, fuck it, I’m going to go back and say hey to him. So I threw the Altima in reverse and rolled back.

The was still in the truck so I honked twice and came the popped out.

I’ll say that he and I haven’t spoken in years. Properly anyway.

So I basically made my peace with him. I’ll have to tell you the backstory at some point. I’ll add it to the list.

I told him if the ever wanted to open a dialog that I as open to it.

I know I really shocked the shit out of him showing up randomly.

Sorry to have sprung that on him but damn, to randomly drive by a place, and then for a landmark (the food truck) to say hey, here’s your boy occupying the same space you have earlier in time, and further, for him to be walking out as I was drying by… I had to stop. I felt compelled.

And I spoke to Aaron Tobin today. He hit me up on the phone earlier and we chatted, but the got interrupted by a phone call. I called back but no answer. I told him I was just gonna come over if the kept acting like this, and I did.

Showed up to the house and he was just getting out of the shower. I chatted with his mom for awhile, let her know I’m thinking about cutting my hair, and i’ll have to get back to her on a day I’m free.

So we went on our normal rounds: Starbucks, and Walmart. I was messaging with Axxxxx all the while, and it was at this point that she took the time to mention that I drink too much coffee. I can easily confirm that, especially the last two days where I havent been eating much of anything until the later hours in the day, and as sci have been feeling the effects of too much caffeine on an empty stomach. it just gives me an all over general icky feeling.

So Tobin. he’s been seeing a girl, as it turns out. Now he mentioned this a few weeks back, that he was going on a date with someone. This is still the same someone. Ashley is her name.

Story here is that it seems to have been little hot and heavy between them, which I can support this for him because its been a hot minute since he’s had some nice chemistry with a girl.

Interesting day. Currently at a Christmas get together at this girl I’ve been mentioning Sxxxxxxxx house.

Before that I was with Axxxxx. She hit me up today while she was at work and wanted to hang afterward. She was initially going to get food with her friends from work or some other, but she ended up linking up with me directly after work to get food. She doesn’t have to put on a game face she said, or something along that line.

She and I chatted. We met at a steak and shake off Semoran and then went to a Chinese buffet which was horrible, we both agreed on that.

We chatted and smoked in my car afterward. She doesn’t know what to make of her feelings. I can respect that. We have a history and while she says she currently hates me, we seem to be getting along when we do meet up.

5:30 am and driving home from Winter Garden to Altamonte Springs. I ended up getting Starbucks because it was so damn late/early that they’re open. Made it all the way home from Winter Garden, late as shit.

6:40 am and I have FFXIV up and running.

So Axxxxx messaged me earlier in the afternoon, chatting about this and that. She had been crying and hysterical about the loss of our child (refer to the Alaska diary)

Long story short we are now meeting for a late lunch at her behest. Again I don’t know what to expect. She says she hates me but I feel like she says it to try and remind herself that she does. But I don’t think she has it in her heart to harbor such feelings, not on any permanent basis.

Met with frank yesterday. Always a good chat. He is coming around finally to the idea of getting me caught up with music. Also we are going to work on him getting more success with Tokyo Elvis. Meaning, were gonna work on the marketing aspect etc.

That being said it’s going on ten years.

This is going to be interesting how this plays out. She wants to steal me away from Tina as a roommate, which I am on board with.

Things to Know Before Travelling to Japan for the First Time.

I can close my eyes and picture myself standing awestruck on the fascinatingly busy Shibuya crossing in Tokyo. Gaping at the dazzling lights, fancy skyscrapers and scores of businessmen darting about in dark suits. I was travelling to Japan for the first time, and it was my first day in Tokyo. In equal parts, I felt excited, intrigued and apprehensive, recalling all the Japan travel tips I’d read online. I had dreamt about Japan for so long, but now that I was finally here, I couldn’t help but wonder what spending an entire month exploring the country would be like.

In the months since I left Japan, I faced a strange melancholy… and a barrage of reader questions. Many of you reached out to me to ask, “When is the best time to visit Japan?” “Is the Japan Rail pass worth it?” “Do they speak in English in Japan?” “How to survive as a vegetarian / vegan in Japan?” “Do you have any Japan travel tips?”

Until 2016, it was a pain to get a Japan tourist visa for Indians. We had to get an invitation letter from a sponsor in Japan and go through a tedious application process.

Luckily, the Japan visa requirements for Indians have finally been relaxed. Although a Japan visa on arrival for Indian citizens is still a distant dream, the Japan visa application now takes only 4 working days to be processed, without the need for a sponsor. The application must be filed at VFS Japan – the official visa application centre for the Japan Embassy in India. The process is similar to the Schengen visa application, with return flights, accommodation bookings, and bank statements needed to score the visa.

While travelling to Japan for the first time, I received a single-entry Japan visa on my Indian passport. It allowed me to stay in the country for 30 days. I was given 2.5 months from the application date to use it.

When is the best time to go to Japan?

Most people tend to plan their trip during the much-anticipated cherry blossom season in Japan. It’s a beautiful time, but it’s also when Japan tends to get the most crowded and expensive.

I landed up in Japan in early March 2018 and stayed exactly a month. Although Honshu, the main island home to Tokyo and Kyoto, was quite chilly, I enjoyed the quiet shoulder season. And I got a chance to catch the Ume – plum blossom – almost as beautiful as the cherry blossom yet somehow more introspective. I then headed south to Kyushu Island, which was warmer, with many offbeat places to explore.

Japan travel tips: Avoid the busy cherry blossom season in Japan!

My plan was to leave just before the cherry blossom began in Japan. But as luck (and climate change) would have it, the cherry trees bloomed early that year!

One of my most important Japan travel tips – even if you’re travelling to Japan for the first time – is don’t be hell bent on seeing the cherry blossom. Nature won’t time itself according to our dates. And Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka are seriously crowded during that time. There is so much more to Japan that I highly recommend visiting in late winter, autumn or early summer.

Cheapest time to visit Japan / low season in Japan

I witnessed accommodation prices in Tokyo skyrocketing and availability falling drastically between the beginning (winter) and end (spring) of my trip. It gets exorbitantly expensive in Japan in spring and I was forced to downgrade myself from a charming ryokan (traditional inn) to a pod hostel to financially survive the last few days of my trip. Autumn and summer are fairly popular too. That leaves winter as the low season.

If you enjoy winter, prepare to be spellbound as popular cities turn into winter wonderlands from November to February. With heating indoors, good clothes, few tourists and relatively low prices, it’ll be quite a delight.

Early spring and late autumn are beautiful and wonderfully warm across the country. They aren’t the busiest, especially away from the main cities.

What to pack for Japan

What you pack for Japan totally depends on when you travel there. And where you plan to go. If you’re travelling to Japan for the first time, chances are, you’ll spend time on Honshu, exploring Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. The island distinctly experiences all four seasons – and can get very hot or very cold, even in spring or autumn.

Among my Japan travel tips, I always say pack in layers. Carry clothes that you can add on or remove. In my bags, I always have warm inner wear, t-shirts / tops, a couple of sweaters, a rain jacket and a light winter jacket. If you’re travelling in winter, definitely carry warm socks, boots and a real winter jacket. As someone who tries to avoid wool and down feathers for ethical reasons, I recommend the synthetic fabric jackets at Decathalon and those made with recycled plastic at Save the Duck.

Essentials to pack for Japan:

Towel: I was surprised to find out that most accommodations in Japan don’t offer towels! If they do, you have to rent them at an additional cost. Definitely carry your own.

Adapter: I used my universal travel adapter that works pretty much everywhere around the world, including Japan.

How to access the internet in Japan?

Japan is the land of modern technology and high speed internet. But it comes at quite a cost. Outside of the big cities and train stations, Wifi is not as readily available as I’d hoped. And yet I found it important to have internet in Japan to use Google Maps, Google Translate and other apps to make life easier – especially since I was travelling in Japan for the first time.

Airtel international roaming plans for Japan

Before I began collaborating with Airtel last year, I had no idea it was actually possible to buy an international roaming plan for Japan. Compared to SIM card costs in Japan, the offers looks very promising (and is valid across 82 countries):

1 GB data with 100 minutes of incoming and outgoing calls – valid for 30 days – costs INR 1199. Data usage can be tracked on the Airtel App.

1 GB data per day with unlimited incoming calls and 500 minutes of outgoing calls – valid for 10 days – costs INR 4999 (coming soon).

Local sim card in Japan

Japan is probably one of the most expensive countries when it comes to buying a local SIM card! Mine cost 6000 yen (INR 3850) for 1 GB for a month – data only. The other option was 7000 yen (INR 4500) for 200 MB/day. Local SIM cards are available at international airports and 7-11s across the country.

Wifi in Japan

Many accommodations and restaurants in Tokyo offer fast and free Wifi. But unfortunately, Wifi availability steadily decreases as you to head to the countryside.

Where to go if you’re travelling to Japan for the first time?

Japan travel tips: Choose a mix of popular and offbeat places in Japan.

Japan is a huge country and it can be quite overwhelming to figure out where to go! I spent the first week in the city on assignment for Japan Tourism Board. We explored the Kantou region of Honshu, including Tokyo, Matsumoto, Nagano and Nikko. After that, my partner and I spent two weeks travelling south to Fukuoka and Hiroshima on Kyushu island, and then all the way to Yakushima island. And I spent the last week exploring more of the Honshu countryside and a bit of Kyoto on my own.

If you’re travelling to Japan for the first time, I recommend splitting your time between the popular cities and getting a glimpse of offbeat Japan:

First time in Tokyo

I stayed in three different areas of Tokyo, and most enjoyed the vibe of the Asakusa neighborhood. It retains the old world charm of the city with old Buddhist temples, little shops, a walkway along the river and charming sushi bars and izakayas (local bars). It’s also home to the stunning 14th century Sensoji temple – Tokyo’s oldest. I remember hanging out there late at night, when the crowds were gone, and witnessing breathtaking “sakura rain” on the way back. Oh how I miss Japan!

First time in Kyoto

I unintentionally hit Kyoto during the cherry blossom season – and must confess it was way too touristy for my liking. I borrowed my host’s bicycle for beautiful early morning rides to some parks and temples. But the overtourism thereafter killed the vibe. I imagine it must be a delight in winter though.

First time in Osaka

Osaka is just a short train ride from Kyoto – and a regular Japanese city without much of the old-world charm. I’d suggest picking one of Kyoto or Osaka – if at all, for your first time in Japan. I hopped over to Osaka for a vegan cooking lesson, based on macrobiotics and yin and yang principles, with a local Japanese family – and it was definitely one of the highlights of my trip!

Offbeat places to visit in Japan

Outside of the cherry blossom season, you are unlikely to encounter the crowds of Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka anywhere else in Japan. Places like Nara, Nagano, Hiroshima and Matsumoto, though not offbeat, are beautiful enough to spend a while getting into the Japan vibe while still having access to the comforts of tourism. Some people speak English, restaurants have English menus and there are plenty of accommodations to choose from.

If you really want to stray off the beaten path, head south. Some places I loved:

Aso: A little town in Kyushu, home to Mount Aso, an active volcano and plenty of hiking nearby.

Kurokawa: A charming onsen town, literally home to tens of onsens (Japanese baths). Some in the mountains, some in the forest, one even under a waterfall!

Yakushima: A difficult and expensive island to get to, but one of the last remaining truly wild frontiers of Japan. Great for hiking and moss forests.

Kambayashi: A region on the countryside of the Kyoto prefecture, home to charming little villages and slow life.

Where to stay in Japan

Staying at a 100-year-old Hakata townhouse in Fukuoka.

Airbnb, my favorite go-to platform for unique accommodations, is complicated in Japan. After a government crackdown, only places with a tourism license are allowed to rent on Airbnb. And only for 180 days of the year. This might make sense in tackling overtourism in places like Kyoto, but is a lost opportunity for the less-explored countryside villages.

Anyway, travelling to Japan for the first time, I relied mostly on booking.com and direct google search to find traditional ryokans, small B&BS, guesthouses, hostel pods and homestays.

Important Japan travel tip: Most accommodations allow check-in only after 4 pm and expect check-out by 10 am. This is to allow for their rigorous cleaning schedule!

Accommodations to try if you’re travelling to Japan for the first time

Ryokan: Traditional Japanese inns, typically home to tatami (woven straw) flooring with futon bedding and an onsen (hot spring bath). Here you indulge in a Japenese bath, then settle in for a lavish Japanese meal. If you afford it, I recommend splurging on atleast one ryokan experience while you’re in Japan! I tried mine as part of the JNTO assignment in Nikko.

Homestay / small guesthouse: We stayed in small guesthouses and homestays across the country. These typically had shared (but extremely clean) bathrooms and comfy DIY futon bedding on tatami floors. Most of our hosts were really friendly and even invited us to local events or secret hideouts nearby.

Hostel pod: I was nearby broke on my last transit through Tokyo, and decided to stay in a pod hostel is Asakusa. The walls were thin, but the beds comfy enough for a good night’s sleep!

My favorite accommodations in Japan

Guest House Asora in Aso: A simple guesthouse with a great location in Aso town and a sweet owner who invited us to a local fire festival.

Satoyama Guest House Couture in Ayabe: Run by the sweetest young Japanese host who reminded me of a typical Murakami character!

Heartland House in Yakushima: A family-run guesthouse on the island, hosted by a friendly couple. They speak very little English though.

Harborside Guest House Minato in Fukuoka: A restored Hakata townhouse dating back a 100 years, managed by a friendly host.

Bunka Hostel Tokyo: Budget bunk bed pods in the hip Asakusa neighborhood of Tokyo.

How expensive is Japan?

I hate to break it to you, but compared to most places in the world, Japan is expensive. Getting a local SIM, accommodation even in guesthouses / hostels, public transport, even food, can be a bit of a shock to the wallet, especially when you’re travelling to Japan for the first time.

Average costs in Japan

Hostels: ~INR 2000 for a bunk bed in a dorm in Tokyo.

Guesthouses: ~INR 3500 for a double room with shared bathroom

Food: ~INR 1000 – 3000 for a local meal in a small restaurant or izakaya

Transport: ~INR 8000+ for a 2-3 hour bullet train ride, like Tokyo to Kyoto or Tokyo to Nara.

Travel tips to experience Japan on a budget

Book early. Especially if you’re travelling in the spring or autumn, book accommodations atleast a few weeks in advance to be able to choose from a diverse range of options.

Get a Japan Rail Pass or regional travel pass. If you plan to travel by train a few times, definitely look at investing in a Japan Rail Pass or regional train / bus pass. Individual tickets cost an arm and a leg!

Use buses to get around locally. Unfortunately the JR Pass doesn’t cover travel within cities / towns. Opt for buses. It took me a while to figure out the bus system. Basically you get on, take a ticket from the machine, notice the number on it, notice the number you get off at and pay accordingly.

Stay longer in one place. Even if you’re travelling to Japan for the first time, fight the FOMO and include only a few destinations on your trip. That way, you can save transport costs, avail long stay rates and immerse deeper in the local culture.

Eat at supermarkets. Sounds like one of those Japan travel tips you don’t want to follow, but even supermarket food in Japan is high quality! And there are some vegan options available. Ask the staff to help translate ingredients if google translate doesn’t work.

Visit the local tourist information. Many places offer travel bundles, combining transport and some sightseeing. The local tourist office is the best place to find out.

Do they speak English in Japan?

Japan travel tips: Learn some basic Japanese phrases before you arrive in Japan.

Within Tokyo and Kyoto, you’re likely to find English speakers at accommodations and restaurants frequented by travellers. But beyond that, most locals tend to speak very little English. Which is great, because Japanese is a beautiful language and it’s fun to attempt to learn atleast a little bit.

Before travelling to Japan for the first time, I learnt a few basic Japanese phrases through a podcast. That, mixed with google translate, broken English and sign language, made it easy enough to get by. Besides, Japanese people are so friendly and kind that no language barrier could stop them from helping you out.

Japanese words to know, especially if you’re travelling in Japan for the first time

Konnichiwa – Hello, good day

Konbanwa – Good evening, good night

Arigatou gozaimas – Thank you very much

Sumima sen – I’m sorry or excuse me (also used to call the staff at a restaurant)

Kudasai – Please

Matane – See you later

Watashi wa began / bejetarian des – I’m vegan / vegetarian (though it might not mean anything to most people)

Ita daki mas – Said before eating, similar to bon appetite. Literally, it is a way to thank the animals that’ve given their soul for your meal.

Wakarima sen – I don’t understand

O genki des – How are you? (formal)

Genki – How are you (informal)

Oishikatta des – It was delicious (say it after a meal you enjoyed)

Best podcast to learn Japanese

I learnt basic Japanese phrases on the Japanese Survival Phrases podcast, available on iOS and Android. The podcast is recorded by a Japanese woman, which makes it easy to learn the diction without a foreign accent.

Is the Japan Rail Pass worth it?

Japan travel tips: Invest in a Japan Rail Pass!

Every time I got into a shinkansen (bullet train) in Japan, I felt like I was flying business class instead of rolling on ordinary railway lines! The Japan Rail Pass is a physical train pass, only available for tourists, that offers unlimited rides on most trains across Japan for a fixed number of days.

Priced between INR 18,000 – 36,300 (265 – 535 US$) for 7, 14 or 21 days, it’s probably the biggest travel cost you’ll incur in Japan. And yet, if you spend a week or less in Japan and do only the return Tokyo-Kyoto-Tokyo train journey, the Japan Rail Pass for 7 days is already worth it. The individual Tokyo-Kyoto journey costs 13,000 Yen (INR 8300 or 115$) one way!

If you plan to explore only one specific region of Japan – for instance, Kyushu island – you could also consider buying a regional train pass.

How to survive as a vegan in Japan?

Vegan in Japan – sounds difficult but it’s full of good surprises (mostly)

While travelling in Japan for the first time, I was surprised to learn that during the Edo period, the traditional Japanese diet was largely plant-based and meat-free! Both Buddhism and Shintoism, practiced for centuries across Japan, promote compassionate eating. And many Japanese rulers had banned the rearing of cattle and consumption of meat, because they couldn’t afford to lose more forests to animal agriculture. Unfortunately things changed during the late 1800s and veganism became an alien concept.

All these years later, as a vegan traveller, I felt spoilt for choice in the popular tourist cities of Tokyo and Kyoto. The HappyCow app is full of vegan friendly spots to try. But beyond, in smaller towns and villages on the countryside, surviving as a vegan or vegetarian requires a bit more effort. What really helped me was a note in the Kanji script explaining I’m vegan and what I can’t AND can eat. Overall, from vegan bento boxes to shojin ryori to incredible tofu and yam based meals, I mostly thrived!

What is the best travel insurance for Japan?

Instead of opting for Indian travel insurance plans that are often cheaper but a pain to claim funds from, I usually opt for World Nomads travel insurance while travelling in extremely expensive countries. And so it was in Japan. Better safe than sorry!

Is Japan safe?

Japan is one of the world’s safest countries to travel in. I walked the streets of Tokyo alone at midnight (akin to some of Murakami’s famous characters), without a care in the world. I took trains and buses by myself, rode a bicycle through small villages, stayed in local homestays, and never once felt concerned for my safety! The lack of crime and the general friendliness of Japanese people sets a true benchmark for safety.

Coronavirus in Japan

The unfortunate spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus around the world has made many people reconsider their travel plans. But I guess the sad truth is that we are as susceptible to contracting it at home, as in Japan. If you have a trip lined up to Japan, don’t cancel just yet. Follow updates closely, avoid areas with cases, and remember that Japan is a huge country and most parts, like in India and the US, are corona-free.

Much to my relief, a lot of it applies to business travellers in formal settings. The locals are quite relaxed when it comes to travellers. Still, here are a few basic Japanese etiquette for tourists that you should consider:

Japanese people are extremely polite. Learning and using words like “arigatou gozaimas” and “sumimasen” go a long way.

In Japan, people frown upon eating or smoking while walking! If you’re eating a bento box or snack outdoors, grab a bench.

Learn to use chopsticks! I was really surprised to learn that locals eat sushi by hand… but for everything else, you need chopsticks. Know never to point your chopsticks at someone, poke food with them or pass food around with them.

Don’t leave a tip. Japan is probably the only country in the world where it’s disrespectful to leave a tip after your meal, because good service shouldn’t be driven by the promise a monetary reward!

Be a mindful traveller. Don’t be loud on trains or buses. Don’t jump queues. Clean up after yourself, especially in public spaces and shared accommodation areas.

Your Sunday Baseball Update (1 of 27)

Welcome. It’s Opening Week in the 2019 baseball season and there’s plenty to get excited about. It’s still only March. A lot of the games are freezing. But there are projections a-plenty, so we might as well talk about who’s supposed to be good and the early developments in this young season. Let’s start with the AL East.

AL East.

Every reputable projections model has the Yankees winning the division with 96-97 wins. But I feel like that’s how it looked last year as well. Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton have elite projections, as do Luis Severino and newcomer, James Paxton.

The Red Sox look just slightly off the pace with Mookie Betts generally seen as the second-best player in baseball and Chris Sale as (at least) the best pitcher in the American League. His projections would make him a landslide Cy Young favorite.

Every model I’ve seen also has the Rays in the second Wild Card with Blake Snell and (to a certain extent) Charlie Morton putting up elite starting numbers.

For the rest of the division, there is some excitement over Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in Toronto, but the Orioles are probably going to be terrible.

The Story So Far: Sale was horrible in his first start (3 IP, 21.00 ERA). The Sox starters have struggled. And the Blue Jays have the best pitching in baseball. After 3 games, playing the Tigers, but I gotta talk about something.

AL Central.

The Indians are heavy favorites yet again (93-97 wins) with a seemingly all-elite staff including Corey Kluber, Carlos Carrasco and Trevor Bauer. Plus, they have two of the best position players in baseball in Jose Ramirez and Francisco Lindor.

I feel like the Twins (82-86 wins) have been a trendy pick to win the division, but the rest of the Central looks lousy.

The Story So Far: Lindor is out indefinitely with an ankle injury. So maybe that trendy Twins pick just got trendier. Plus, nobody in the American League had a better opening week than Jose Berrios (7.2 IP, 0 ER, 10K). The Twins have the second-best pitching in baseball early on. But they probably need to score some runs. The Royals (2-0) are still undefeated.

AL West.

Everyone is taking the Astros (96-98 wins) yet again. Alex Bregman is projecting MVP-like numbers, while Jose Altuve isn’t far behind. And Justin Verlander and Gerrit Cole look like Cy Young candidates.

The rest of the division includes Mike Trout, who everyone agrees is the best player in baseball. He also just got that huge contract. So it would be nice for the game if the Angels could get into the mix in October.

The Story So Far: Ichiro had a great send-off at the Tokyo Dome in two games from two weeks ago that totally counted in the standings even though I’m not sure even the sportswriters are sure how to handle since everyone packed up and went back to Spring Training. But the Mariners have started hot. They lead the Majors in runs scored. Tim Beckham lit up Chris Sale and is my first week A.L. MVP. Enjoy it while it lasts, Seattle.

NL East.

The Nationals (86-90 wins) still seem to be the consensus, slight favorite in the East. Even without Bryce Harper in the mix. Every reputable model has them at least tied for first in the division. Juan Soto and Anthony Rendon have elite projections. Max Scherzer is seen as the 2nd-best pitcher in the league. And the rotation also has Stephen Strasburg and newcomer, Patrick Corbin, who are also Cy Young candidates on paper.

The Phillies (84-89 wins) also look like a playoff team in almost every projection. Bryce Harper was their prize pickup in the offseason. Aaron Nola is also elite.

The Mets (85-87 wins) are also a playoff pick in every projection model. Jacob deGrom is seen as (at least) the best pitcher in the National League. And Noah Syndergaard isn’t far behind. Edwin Diaz is also seen as a huge pickup in the bullpen.

The rest of the division has a Braves team (with Freddie Freeman and Ronald Acuna Jr.) that could compete at 79-85 wins. And the (rebranded) Marlins are going to be awful.

The Story So Far: deGrom and Scherzer went head-to-head on Opening Day, and deGrom came out victorious. And with 6 IP, 0 ER and 10 K, he’s my Opening Week N.L. Cy Young. So the question remains whether he is officially the best pitcher in baseball. Bill James’ pitcher rankings (which I love) still has Scherzer at 1, deGrom at 2 with Justin Verlander, Chris Sale and Corey Kluber rounding out the top 5. Robinson Cano homered off Scherzer in his first AB with the Mets or we might be having a different conversation. The Nats are winless (0-2) thus far without Harper. I feel like Victor Robles has made a lot of mistakes early on. And Mets fans apparently chanted, “Where is Harper?” during the game.

Harper seems like he’s having fun in Philly. He has the #1-selling jersey in baseball (dethroning Aaron Judge). He wore Phanatic spikes on Opening Day. Then the Phanatic wore Harper spikes the following day. He hit his first home run and got a curtain call after going hitless his first game. He got walked before Rhys Hoskins delivered a grand slam. Andrew McCutchen also homered on Opening Day. Even though Maikel Franco has probably been the player to watch early on. Which all means that the Braves pitching has also been pretty terrible.

NL Central.

The Cardinals (83-86 wins) seem to be the consensus favorite in the projection models. Although the Central is all over the place.

The Brewers (80-88 wins) would probably be the #2 choice in the power rankings. Christian Yelich is seen as the best player in the National League and an MVP favorite in two of the 5 projection models I’ve seen.

The Cubs (80-87 wins) start the season as the seeming #3 choice, which rubs me the wrong way. Even though FanGraphs has them winning the division. Kris Bryant is also an MVP favorite in two of the 5 projection models.

The rest of the division seems tough, with the Reds (77-81 wins) and the Pirates (78-80 wins) rounding it out. Joey Votto and Chris Archer have some elite projections in there as well.

The Story So Far: Lorenzo Cain had a walk-off catch on Opening Day. Christian Yelich has stayed red hot. And that might make up for Corey Knebel being lost for the season. Yikes.

After a lackluster debut for the Cardinals, Paul Goldschmidt homered three times in his second game before being walked in his attempt at #4. Kolten Wong has also been hot for the Cardinals. Javy Baez hit two home runs on Opening Day for the Cubs, so he’s coming into the season with a ton of confidence. Just in case anyone forgot about him. But Yu Darvish was fucking horrible (he walked 7 of his first 13 batters) in his season debut against the Rangers.

NL West

The Dodgers (92-95 wins) are heavy favorites again in the West. Justin Turner has some elite projections, as do Clayton Kershaw and Walker Buehler.

The Rockies (79-85 wins) may be competitive and Nolan Arenado is projected as an MVP in one of the models I’ve seen. The Padres (74-81 wins) might be a sleeper. I’ve already received a ‘hot take’ text message predicting the Padres to win the West, so take that with a grain of salt. Garrett Richards and Chris Paddack have some pretty impressive projections in that rotation. And it looks like the Giants and Diamondbacks are going to be bad.

The Story So Far: The Dodgers hit 8 home runs on Opening Day, which is a record. Zack Greinke (3.2 IP, 17.18 ERA) was horrible. Joc Pederson is my Opening Week N.L. MVP, edging out teammate, Austin Barnes. So maybe they’ll be fine without Kershaw or Rich Hill in the early season.

Things sure seem to feel different in San Diego. Maybe that’s just the excitement of the Manny Machado signing. Or the debut of Fernando Tatis Jr. But they went over .500 for the first time since 2015, which is insane. But I also read a story about Machado finding a woman’s wallet at Target and then tracking her down on Instagram. And there’s so many things about that sentence that are incredible.

Alright. We’ve only just begun. I’ll keep a tab of the current projections as we go. But here’s how they stand as of 3/31.

PECOTA: Yankees, Indians, Astros. Red Sox, Rays.// Phillies/Nationals, Brewers/Cardinals, Dodgers. Mets.

From make-up tutorials, holiday vlogs to outdoor adventures, there's nothing 70-year-old grandmother Park Makrae isn't up for.

Park was first encouraged by her granddaughter to make videos as a way to stave off dementia — something that was prevalent in her family.

Her first video, a vlog of her trip to Australia with her 27-year-old granddaughter Kim Yura, quickly racked up thousands of likes, with many praising her sense of humour and her sunny attitude.

Less than six months later, Park — who goes by the adorable name Korea Grandma online — has almost 300,000 followers on YouTube.

One of her most popular videos, in which she shares her "everyday makeup look" has almost 2 million views.

"My grandmother [is] just like us. She likes to travel, eat tasty food and take pretty photos," her granddaughter Kim, who now films and edits her videos, told AP.

"I'm her fan too. She is such a cool person."

But when she's not making YouTube videos, Park is running a diner, which she says she will operate "until she dies."

And like every celebrity, fans are mobbing her in real life. They have been travelling across the country to the restaurant, located some 34km (21 miles) away from the capital city of Seoul, for a meal and a chance get a glimpse of their favourite YouTube star.

Though Park is unable to read or write at an advanced level, she frequently updates her Instagram account. She uses no spaces between words and spells words in her own way, leaving fans guessing the contents of her posts.

"My mom and dad didn't teach me [to read and write] even though we were not poor because they wanted to put me to work," she said.

"As I do YouTube now, I feel sorry that I haven't been educated."

Life wasn't easy for Park as an adult. Her husband abandoned her and three children when he ran up debts, and left her to raise them on her own, while having to run the restaurant every day from 4 in the morning, until 9 at night.

She eventually repaid his debts, and with little government assistance.

Looking at her cheerful demeanour however, you'd hardly guess how much she's been through.

Today, Park has started to add more of her daily experiences to her vlog, often with the help of her granddaughter Kim.

Brands like Samsung and retail giant Lotte have also reportedly approached Park to collaborate with them for commercials, and she's even been featured in local magazines.

"We used to think, since I'm over 70 my life is over," said Park.

"But as I started doing this, I realised life starts at 71."

In 2017 Hot Since 82 added Even Deeper to his seemingly endless list of projects. The first short film saw him explore Mexico during a, particularly high-pressure period. Now, one year later he has taken to Japan for the second installment of the series.

Hot Since 82 – Even Deeper Japan:

Hot Since 82: “Even Deeper is a concept very close to my heart, it allows me to spend more time in a country and to really immerse myself in its culture and history. Playing more intimate shows, meeting people and really understanding their way of life, something that can very easily pass you by when the DJ life is usually airport > hotel > club > airport…”

Instrumental in making the Japan tour possible was BURN Energy Drink, who recently added Hot Since 82 to their list of brand ambassadors for 2018. The partnership includes powering the Even Deeper tour as well as performances at Italy’s Kappa Futur and The Ark BURN this summer.

As a man proven not to be able to sit still, Even Deeper Japan is far from the only project on Hot Since 82’s mind. I fell in love with the lolita aesthetic at a really young age, when I discovered Japanese culture and subcultures. For years and years I wished I could be able to wear such gorgeous clothes once I grew up, so many years later my dream came true 4. Which style of lolita do you like? My favourite style is classic, but I love old school as well. Also I have a thing for sweet otome! 5. Express in your own words, the ideal of your above answer.
