More than 50,000 service industry workers in Las Vegas voted on Tuesday, September 26, to authorize a strike that could impact 22 casino resorts on the Strip — which means bartenders, cooks, cocktail and food servers, guest room attendants, porters, bellmen, laundry, and kitchen workers statewide could hit the picket line at any time. The Culinary Workers Union Local 226, one of the largest and most powerful unions in the country, represents 60,000 workers across Nevada. 53,000 members are based in Las Vegas and are in active negotiations with casino and hotel employers for a new five-year contract. As of September 15, roughly 40,000 workers employed by the three largest gaming employers in the state — MGM Resorts International, Caesars Entertainment, and Wynn Encore Resorts — are working under an expired contract.

Emily is my new work hero!
I simply love her.
———
Emily Benschoter has taken malicious compliance to the next level after she was told she wasn't allowed to have pink hair for her job.
Emily found out her workplace had a bit of an issue with the fact she had pink hair after she got the job without an in-person or video interview.
She revealed on TikTok that she told bosses about her hair color before starting her front-of-house role in the hospitality interview and found out that having pink hair was a big no-no for them.
Instead of dying her hair - or looking for another job - Emily decided that she would wear wigs in natural hair colors each day to comply with the dress code.
The 29-year-old would not only wear natural-colored wigs, but would ensure that they were pretty terrible wigs to boot, meaning far more attention was drawn to the state of her hair than it ever would have been had she been allowed to rock her real hair in all its pink glory.

So at my job I have to serve food to people sometimes, and sometimes we get customers who don't speak Dutch and I realise I have no idea how to wish them a good meal (eetsmakelijk in Dutch, bon appetit in french, etc). So now I end up just saying "here you go" and then nothing, which feels very rude. What are you supposed to say?????? English speaking people in the hospitality industry please help

Hey hey so, just a friendly plea that when you're a guest at hotels/resorts - please give the workers providing you service due consideration, if nothing else.
Yes, we understand you pay a lot to stay at our resort for your vacation. Yes, we get paid to make your stay as comfortable as we can. But also understand that we're humans as well? We aren't the roombas in your house you can turn on at your command. You aren't the only guest we service; some days are busier than others and often times we're required to prioritize certain rooms over others.
It's frustrating for us too when we can't get to everything as fast as we like! - but we're required by brand standards to smile and be polite no matter how stressed or overwhelmed we are. We're trained on how important it is to conduct ourselves properly to appear friendly and accommodating. It'd be nice to receive the same decency in return sometime.
Also, I'm not sure if this is common across most hotels, but for the one I work at, if you call the front desk and request housekeeping service for your room, they will put a ticket in, and the housekeeper it's assigned to will make it their priority to complete at their earliest opportunity. If it was really that much of an issue that you get service, that you have to get entitled and passive-aggressive to the housekeeper - there were ways for you to communicate that to us beforehand! Hell, you could have even just approached me in the hall earlier and asked outright, instead of waiting to make an excuse to get pissed off! I had 15+ turnovers that take priority over the stayover I didn't know you so desperately fucking needed, thank you very much.

Who benefits when a hotel’s staff painstakingly stretches sheets across a bed and tucks them under the mattress so tightly that you have to loosen them to fit your feet in?

big night (1996) and why you should watch it, according to a culinary student
Big Night is one of the fundamental culinary movies. people don't talk about it much, and that's a damn shame.
it made me love Italian cuisine. no easy feat. I've grown up in southern-Italian-food-loving NY, and I've been bored of the cuisine for the longest time. and then came Big Night and Italian food stopped being spaghetti and meatballs and became whole roasted pig, tricolor risotto, and timballo (called timpano in the film).
from a film-lover's view, it's just as stunning. it's an oddball sort of film that throws you straight into the action and leaves you to fill in the space in-between in a way that makes you feel clever. the cinematography, especially in the back-of-house scenes, is beautiful. and it ends in a way you hardly ever see: it's open ended. we have no idea how the story ended.
i love this movie so much <3333
tl;dr go watch Big Night (1996), it's a beautiful film from both a food lover's standpoint and a film lover's.

Lizard Hotel
Went into the greenhouse and something literally sped right in front of me like a blur. At first I thought it was a small rodent. I thought, yay! Another guest!
I got out my camera and started to search for the little critter, but because he is so speedy, all I caught was this:
Tumblr media
It's not Alligator Lizard, but it is a lizard. A different kind of lizard. I think it might be a Western Fence Lizard.
That got me to thinking, maybe the greenhouse is not a Lizard House, so much as a Lizard Hotel. Maybe I shouldn't be as sad about Alligator Lizard leaving, because it was only a hotel visit in the first place. It wasn't meant to be like a condo, or even a rental apartment. Just a hotel.

Hey you! You weeb! I am writing my thesis and would like to see some international anime, manga and japanese pop-culture fans participating in this neat little survey I did. https://link.webropolsurveys.com/S/E3A949F0E438A9B1
I am a 3rd-year student in Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences. I study Tourism and Event Management in the international TEMPO class.  The subject of my thesis is seichijunrei (聖地巡礼), also known as “anime pilgramige”. The aim of my thesis is to understand how anime and other Japanese fiction media entertainment effect a tourist in their decisions when choosing international destinations and visiting points of interest. I wish that anime and Japanese pop-culture fans, aswell as those who have participated in seichijunrei partake in this survey.    All answers are handled anonymously with trust and good scientific conduct. Participants cannot be identified from their answers. Answering this survey takes around 15 minutes, and the survey can be accessed untill 2nd of October 23:59 or untill ~50 answers have been recorded. Participation to this survey is voluntary, and the answers provided will only be used for this thesis.

Workers across the country have taken to walkouts and strikes to demand better wages and working conditions. Las Vegas hospitality workers could be the next to join. Members of the Culinary and Bartenders Unions Tuesday night voted in favor of authorizing a strike at nearly two dozen properties on the Las Vegas Strip. While the vote does not mean a strike is imminent, the unions now have the power to call one if it does not come to an agreement with employers. Negotiations are slated to continue next week. The unions aim to “settle a fair contract as soon as possible” but are prepared to strike, according to a statement from Ted Pappageorge, Secretary-Treasurer for the Culinary Union, which is affiliated with the labor union Unite Here. “Companies are doing extremely well and we are demanding that workers aren’t left behind,” he said.
