I was a bit concerned about the fact that we have a persimmon tree at the fenceline that drops fruit into the paddock that my horse is in. Mostly due to them being the perfect size to choke a horse if it were to eat it without chewing. But, come to find out, the second that any ripe fruit drops into the fenceline, my chickens will rush over and to rabidly eat it. Which, calms another worry of mine that one of the hens we have was staying off alone by herself by this particular stretch of fence, in reality she just wants to stand by so she gets all the fruit to herself 😩
#mine#we thought the lone chicken was upset and scared of the horse since we introduced him last week#so she was hanging in the corner out of fear...nope. just wants the fruits#i guess it's a win win because persimmons are quite nutritious for chickens

Some notes on worldbuilding with carnivorous cultures:
Animals feed more people than you think. You don't kill a cow for just one steak, this is a modern misconception since we're removed from the actual animals we eat our meat from; a single cow has several kilos of meat. In fact, slaughtering a single cow often means a feast time for possibly dozens of people. Every part of an animal can be used, and you can see this in cultures that live by ranching and transhumance.
Here, you should look at the Mongols and the people of the Eurasian Steppe, the people of the North American Plains, the people of the Pampas (fun fact; Buenos Aires was called the "carnivore city"), European and Asian cultures that practice transhumance, and those of the Arctic circle.
There are many ways to cook meat, but arguably, the most nutritious way to consume meat is in stew, as it allows you to consume all the fats of the animal and add other ingredients. In fact, mutton soup and stew historically was one of the basic meals for the for people in the Eurasian Steppe, who are one of the people with the highest meat consumption in the world.
Of course, meat spoils away easily. Fortunately, from jerky to cured meats, there are ways to prevent this. In pre-industrial and proto-industrial societies, salted meat was the main way of consumption and exporting meat. This makes salt even a more prized good.
Often, certain parts of animals like eyes, the liver, the testicles, the entrails, are considered not only cultural delicacies but as essential for vitamins and nutrients unavailable in environments such as the poles. The Inuit diet is a very strong example.
Pastures and agriculture have often competing dynamics. The lands that are ideal for mass pasture, that is, temperature wet grasslands, are also often ideal for agriculture. So pastoralism has often been in the margins of agrarian societies. This dynamic could be seen in the Americas. After the introduction of cattle and horses, the Pampas hosted semi-nomadic herdsmen, natives and criollo gauchos. The introduction of wire eventually reduced this open territory, converting it into intense agriculture, and traditional ranching was displaced to more "marginal" land less suitable for agriculture. Similar processes have happened all over the world.
This also brings an interesting question to explore. Agriculture is able to feed more people by density. What about species that DON'T do agriculture, because they're completely carnivorous? The use of what human civilization considers prime agricultural land will be different. They will be able to support much higher population densities than pastoralism.
Pastoral human populations have developed lactase persistance to be able to feed on dairy products even in adulthood. This mutation has happened all over the world, presumably with different origins. In any mammalian species that domesticates other mammals such a thing would be very common if not ubiqutous, as it massively expands the diet. Milk provides hydration, and cheese, yogurth and other such products allows long lasting food sources.
What about hunting? Early humans were apex predators and we are still ones today. However, humans can eat plants, which somewhat reduces the hunting pressure on fauna (though not the pressure of agrarian expansion which can be even worse). An exclusively carnivorous species (for example some kind of cat people) would have to develop very rigid and very complex cultural behavior of managing hunting, or else they would go extinct from hunger before even managing domestication. These cultural views towards hunting have also arosen in people all over the world, so you can get a sense of them by researching it.
It is possible for pastoral nomadic people, without any agriculture, to have cities? Of course. All nomadic peoples had amazing cultures and in Eurasia, they famously built empires. But they traded and entered conflicts with agrarian societies, too. They weren't isolated. Most of nomadic societies were defined by trade with settled ones.
The origin of human civilization and agriculture is still debated. It would be probably completely different for a non-human carnivorous society. One possible spark would be ritual meeting points (such as the historical Gobleki Tepe) or trade markets growing into permanent cities. But in general, pastoralism, hunting and ranching favors low-density populations that would be quite different.
Fishing, on the other hand, is a reliable source of protein and promotes settled cities. One can imagine acquaculture would be developed very early by a civilization hungry for protein.
Other possibilities of course are the raising of insects and mushrooms, both very uncommonly explored in fiction besides passing mentions.
Of course, most carnivorous species have some limited consumption of plant matter and many herbivores are oportunistic predators. The main thing to ask here is what the daily meal is here. For most human agrarian cultures, it's actually grain (this is where the word meal comes from). What about species that cannot live with a grain-based diet? You will find that many things people take for granted in agrarian society would be completely different.
As I always say: the most important question you can ask is "where does the food comes from?"
I hope you found these comments interesting and useful! I would love to do a better post once I'm able to replace my PC (yes, I wrote this all in a phone and I almost went insane). If you like what I write and would love to see more worldbuilding tips, consider tipping my ko-fi and checking my other posts. More elaborate posts on this and other subjects are coming.

jane’s first morning with you | cw: none. gn! reader
— swear i tried to clean up!
jane stirrs, thin sheets rustling as her tired limbs stretch across the soft mattress. the scent she grew to love smells faint in her nose. instead, it’s replaced with a delicious smell of eggs, sausages, and. .blue berry pancakes? eyes flutter open to the morning glow seeping into the room. she lazily turns her head to her nightstand to check the clock. 7:30am. jane sits up with a yawn, stretching her arms over her head. “ this is a first. . “ she murmurs, sliding her legs off the bed and stands up. a nimble hand skims through fluffy onyx locks as she walks out of her bedroom and follows the smell.
for some reason, her usual empty home feels more lively and homey. the air feels warm and she feels like a kid walking to the kitchen for breakfast. jane stops at the doorway once she catches a glimpse of your figure pacing around the kitchen to prepare everything. there’s something warm hugging her heart, introducing to her a feeling she finally gets to experience; unadulterated endearment. jane was used to being alone, only having herself to take care of. although it’s weird to have another person in her home like this, the fact that that person is you makes it feel like everything is a perfect dream.
“ oh, jane! “ you throw her a quick smile as you put a fresh batch of pancakes onto a plate from a pan. “ sit at the table! i’m almost done with breakfast. “
she crossing her arms with a playful smirk. “ oh alright. though, i’m surprised you know how to cook, you never mentioned to me that you can. it smells good so far. are you making eggs, sausages, and blueberry pancakes? “ she inquire as she walks over to the rounded table in the small dining room and takes a seat in a chair. there’s already silverware waiting on the table for her.
“ you never asked, but yeah i do. “ you reply, sliding the eggs and sausages onto a separate plate with a spatula. “ and yup, you’re right. i wasn’t exactly sure about what a rat thiren’s diet was so i tried to make the breakfast simple and nutritious. is that fine? “
small amounts of blood rushes to her cheeks. jane chuckles and rests her chin on her opened palm. “ that’s totally fine. i don’t really have a consistent diet due to my workload anyways, sweetheart. “
you sighed, walking over to the refrigerator to pull out a cart of goat milk. “ goat milk. .huh. “ you mutter under your breath, analyzing the cart. jane’s ear wiggle as her smile grows an inch wider. “ well, i know and that’s going to change. the fact that you have a bunch of snacks and energy bars in your basement says enough. “ you grab an empty glass from a cabinet and pour a considerate amount of milk in it.
“ i mean, you don’t expect me to run around without my energy bars, right? i need my energy after all. “
“ hold your horses. i never said you couldn’t have them, i’m just saying i’ll cook you meals so you won’t need them as much, hun. “ you explained, grabbing the two plates and placed it in front of her. jane stares down at the breakfast meals. it smells very good and looks properly cooked. even the sausages are nicely sliced into pieces. the portion however, is a bit too much.
you hand her the glass of goat milk and some syrup with a quick kiss on the cheek and sat beside her. “ are you done cooking? “ jane suddenly asks, teal hues looking over at you.
“ i am, why? “ you answer back with confusion.
“ i’m the only one with breakfast in front of me. did you really cook this just for me? “ she asks again with curiosity behind her tone.
you nod your head, “ mhm. i only want to know how my cooking taste for you since again, i’ll be the one making you meals for now on. “
“ . . .i see. “ jane mutters, taken back by your genuine care for her. she grabs the fork and spoon and starts to eat the eggs and diced sausages first. a surprised hum leaves her lips as she chews. the eggs are cooked to perfection and the sausages are tender and chewy. “ judging by those wide doe eyes of yours, you like it so far? “ you smile brightly, absolutely overjoyed that she’s enjoying your cooking.
“ . .it is. the best thing i had in a while, sweetheart. thank you, seriously. “ jane swallows her food, looking at you with a smile full of adoration. is it possible to fall deeper in love with someone you already love? she wonders.
“ hehe, yeah? if you think that the eggs and sausage are good, you should try the pancakes! it’ll blow your mind like boom! “ you made a goofy boom gesture and jane nearly burst out laughing. she hopes most of her mornings will be like this with you. full of warmth and laughter. “ really now? i guess i should hurry up and try the pancakes then. “
jane grabs the knife and cuts through the fluffy pancakes like butter. before she can stab it with a fork, you stop it. “ wait, wait—lemme add syrup, you like syrup on your pancakes, right? “
“ hmm, i do. but i never tried this brand of syrup before. when i was “ working “ as a store manager of a grocery store, they have given me a surplus of goods. so some of these brands i’m not so familiar with. “
“ do you wanna try it then? “
“ sure, my dear. “
you take the syrup, open it up, and pour a nice amount of the thick liquid all over the blueberry pancakes. she pierce the pieces of pancakes with the fork and puts it into her mouth. explosions of delicious tastes floods her tastebuds as she chews. everything is practically melting on her tongue all at once. will you really be cooking something like this now for her? you watch her cheeks turn a darker shade of red, her turquoise eyes brightens with awe, both her tail and ears flutter.
“ now that’s a even better reaction coming from you—mmph? “
jane press her lips against yours in an unexpected kiss. the sweet taste of the sugary syrup and blueberry pancakes explores your tongue. chu! she pulls away after a few seconds, smiling smugly at the dumbfounded look on your face.
“ now that’s a way better reaction from you. how about you share this with me? it’s even more delicious if we eat together~ “

IMHTA? (Is My Horse The Asshole?)
I (2_?F) have been exploring the forest of Hollow Woods, gently collecting fireflies for the druids so they can use the light from them. Don't ask me what they do with them, I don't know!
The more fireflies I collect, the further my training with the druids proceeds. I have gotten to the point where I can self-make hay that'll be nutritious enough for horse consumption. However, my current steed (17M) refuses to eat the hay I crafted. After all the time I spent gathering fireflies (which he has helped me with, it's also good exercise for him), and the training in the garden, and the collecting of the necessary supplies to craft the hay, he still will not indulge in my hard work!
He's being inconsiderate of my time and craft abilities, only willing to eat hay sold at stalls around Jorvik. It's disheartening. The hay is not inedible, so is he being the asshole?

Townsends just uploaded a video where he unearths a large, decorated ceramic vessel that contains the corpse of a horse that has been preserved in salted butter since 1758. Back then, they mutilated animals and humans that were precious to them as a form of divination. This horse in particular had been contorted to have a toadlike appearance and shaved bison horns grafted to its mouth to form an array of six tusks. It was posed so that it appears to be sipping from a silver chalice, decorated with elaborately carved bone icons. Jon believes that the chalice is a metaphor for prosperity. While the horse was still alive, they would keep the goblet filled with a nutritious wine of sow milk to keep the animal alive and in relative comfort. Buried under a gambling hall, the beast was intended to represent the Philadelphian god of luck and hard spirits; the inscriptions carved into the wall planks detail the extensive prayer that they would chant to imbue each liquor cask with merriment without hangover. It's hard to tell how quickly they would recite the hymn, but the length implies that it would take at least a few hours - Jon said that he would cover this in a future Nutmeg Tavern livestream. Apparently the butter did a surprisingly good job at preserving the flesh, but it altered the texture and flavor in a way that makes it taste reminiscent of foie gras.

So my brain just came up with the most cursed blessed crossover.
War Prize Cow Hob is gifted to Centaur King Dream. Hob's people are known for their milk, which is said to have some sort of magical properties that help extend lifespan, increase virility, heal all ailments, etc, so Hob with his ahem, huge tracts of land is obviously selected to be the king's. personal cow since he is clearly producing a healthy amount of milk.
Not really sure if bipedal or quadrupedal cow Hob works better in this scenario but you can bet that Dream spoils the hell of his war prize. He feeds him only the freshest of veggies grown from the royal farms, dresses him only in the finest silks, and of course, ensures that he personally milks Hob daily... sometimes twice daily 😏
AJSHSHS this is so blursed.... I love it. Cow x Horse solidarity. I kinda love the idea of both of them being quadrupedal, but it might be difficult for Dream to milk Hob properly if he's working with a proper udder situation? I suppose he could get right down on the floor like a good centaur milkmaid, hehe.
Either way - it's both a sexy and sweet idea. I'm imagining them both cuddled up on Dream’s MASSIVE custom centaur bed, limbs tangled together, Dream snuggling up against all of Hob’s soft parts. All the things they can do together - hoof care, washing and brushing each other, and of course the milking. Dream likes to partake in Hob’s milk every morning to start the day off right. He's definitely noticed that he's feeling more lively since he started drinking from his prized cow, although he's not sure if it's magic or just really nutritious.
For his part, Hob is having a great time. Dream takes such good care of him, and the centaurs in general seem very pleasant. Hob felt like a country bumpkin at first, but everyone is nice to him and Dream says that he's the prettiest thing in the entire Palace! Hob is definitely falling in love, and who can blame him? He's having his titties fondled every day by a handsome centaur, he's being fed organic, delicious food, and he gets to keep the King warm at night! And even when he gets up to shenanigans, Hob is never punished. Dream will simply pinch his teat and tell him to behave nicely.
The strange world of centaurs and cowpeople is a delightful one. I hope they live happily ever after <3

Headcanons for the Shaw Pack’s Favorite Carnival Activities and Foods
David: David’s favorite activity at a carnival is the Ring Toss. He knows that most games are rigged, but somehow, David always manages to excel at that game. He strikes the perfect balance of strength and finesse. When asked which prize he’d like, David always lets Angel pick something out for him because (since their mating), Angel suggests that they donate the stuffed animal they selected to the pups’ room in the Shaw Pack den, so lots of kids can enjoy. Their mere idea of using the prize for the young pups makes David’s heart melt. As for his go-to fair food? Fried dough with a generous sprinkle of sugar. There’s no such thing as nutritious fair food, and frankly, if there were, David would not want to touch it. After all, it’s not often that he goes to a carnival. While he’s there, he might as well enjoy and indulge!
Angel: Angel is a big Bumper Cars fan. They love to get behind the wheel and take down anyone and everyone they can. No one is safe from their bumper-car road-rage, even (especially) the pack. After their victory, they will track down a sausage sandwich with grilled onions and peppers to celebrate.
Asher: Asher always looks forward to the Scrambler ride, because no matter how hard he tries, the pattern of movement always confuses him, which is what excites and thrills him. He habitually orders a large plate of nachos with every kind of cheese (or ‘cheese-product’) to share with the pack. Not only does Asher love nachos, but he also enjoys letting his friends have a bite. A bonus, his friends will usually let him sneak a bite of their food as repayment, meaning Asher gets to sample the whole carnival.
Babe: Babe does not do rides because they get horrible motion sickness. They do, however, love playing all the games. Their favorite game to play is the Water Shooting Game, because they always do well. Since Babe saves money by not going on the rides, they are able to play almost every game and usually return home with many prizes of all sizes. Their favorite food to eat is caramel corn, because it’s somehow always better when eaten at a carnival than at home.
Milo: Milo makes a beeline for the Strongman Game whenever he attends a fair. He makes the bell ding every time, much to the surprise and chagrin of the employees. In fact, once, after Sweetheart declared that a stuffed gray wolf plush (which happened to reflect Milo’s own wolf form) was the cutest, best prize of the whole fair, Milo made it his mission to win. The plush, named Hammer, now resides on Milo’s and Sweetheart’s bed. (In fact, this is a headcanon I developed and discussed in an old fic, Cross My Heart.) Afterwards, Milo is hot to trot to get his hands on a nice, hot, salted soft pretzel. It’s filling, delicious, and quintessential to the fair experience.
Sweetheart: Although one might expect Sweetheart to enjoy funhouses or horror houses, their favorite carnival activity is actually the Carousel. They walked up and down to seek out the perfect horse, ideally one with unique markings and/or close to the outer edge so that they can wave to their friends on each rotation. Sweetheart never leaves a carnival without eating a candy apple. They can’t resist the sweet treat, and love how convenient it is on a stick.
Darling: Darling adores a session in the Photo Booth. They ask (or sometimes, force) each of their friends to take a few pictures with them. Darling is a master at posing, always ensuring they get a wide range of shots showcasing all the fun they have. After the fair, Darling will copy the photos, keeping one set for themselves and giving the other one to the person. Having a physical reminder of the fun memories is so meaningful to Darling, especially if they begin to feel loneliness creep in. While at the fair, they usually opt for a corndog slathered in mustard. They have a very strong stomach.
Sam: Sam may be reluctant about crowds, noise, and being forced to convert your money into ‘tickets’ to hide how expensive everything, but even he enjoys a slow ride on the Ferris Wheel. It’s a beautiful opportunity to see all the stars above and all the hustle-and-bustle below, especially when it’s Darling sitting next to him in the seat, holding his hand in theirs. Ever one with a sweet tooth (or sweet fang, rather), Sam usually gets a hot fudge sundae to eat, savoring each spoonful.
BONUS!
Gabe: A bit of an adrenaline-junkie, Gabe always enjoyed the Roller Coaster. David clearly heard the familiar howl in his father’s voice as he dropped from the apex. Gabe always opted for french fries when it was his turn to order, but in reality, it was his job to eat whatever anyone else ordered and didn’t like or couldn’t finish. It was a job at which he performed efficiently.
Marie: Marie never leaves a fair without getting her face painted. She usually asks for a wolf. Her favorite food is the pack of sandwiches she smuggled into the fair by hiding them in her large purse, because fair food is too greasy, too expensive, and (probably) prepared with too many health/cleanliness violations for her to even think about putting it in her mouth.

Had a “Naughty Game” idea for the sleepover
Would you rather…
Let Tommy do whatever he wanted to you for 24 hours
OR
Be able to do whatever you wanted to Tommy for 24 hours
Oh, that's easy! I want to be in control 😈
That man is getting a minimum of 8 hrs rest, 3 nutritious meals and a long soak in the tub as I gently stroke him like a frightened horse and whisper words of affirmation into his ear. What can I say, loving relationships are my biggest kink 😉 (and this poor man deserves nothing less after years of trauma!)

Today In History
Dr. George Washington Carver was an agricultural scientist and inventor who developed hundreds of products using peanuts, sweet potatoes and soybeans. He is believed to have been born the month of January in 1864.
Dr. Carver discovered over 300 products from peanuts, soybeans and sweet potatoes, which aided nutrition for farm families.
Dr. Carver wanted to improve the lot of “the man farthest down,” the poor, one-horse farmer at the mercy of the market and chained to land exhausted by cotton.
Unlike other agricultural researchers of his time, Dr. Carver saw the need to devise practical farming methods for this kind of farmer. He wanted to coax them away from cotton to such soil-enhancing, protein-rich crops as soybeans and peanuts and to teach them self-sufficiency and conservation.
He achieved this through an innovative series of free, simply-written brochures that included information on crops, cultivation techniques, and recipes for nutritious meals. He also urged the farmers to submit samples of their soil and water for analysis and taught them livestock care and food preservation techniques.
Dr. Carver took a holistic approach to knowledge, which embraced faith and inquiry in a unified quest for truth. Carver also believed that commitment to a larger reality is necessary if science and technology are to serve human needs rather than the egos of the powerful.
His belief in service was a direct outgrowth and expression of his wedding of inquiry and commitment.
One of his favorite sayings was:
“It is not the style of clothes one wears, neither the kind of automobile one drives, nor the amount of money one has in the bank, that counts. These mean nothing. It is simply service that measures success.”

Melilotus albus (honey clover)
Honey clover arrived in North America in the 1660s and was deliberately introduced as a fodder crop for horses and cattle. Not only is it nutritious but this plant also fixes nitrogen (it's in the pea family Fabaceae) and honey clover improves pastureland over time. Of course the other reason it was introduced is implied by its name. European settlers were also introducing honeybees at the same time.
Honey clover is a Eurasian plant but it now grows in temperate environments all over the world. In its natural habitat it likes full sun but beyond that, it's not too fussy. This healthy specimen seems to be doing very well, growing next to a signpost in the middle of a parking lot - and it hasn't rained in weeks.
I hate to admit it but secretly, I admire weeds. Unlike the pampered pussycats we plant in our flowerbeds, weeds are tough. They take full advantage of our urban environments without the luxuries of regular watering and chemical fertilizers.

This was the sixth of my revamped Whinfell designs. 🐎✨ Originally posted on my alt instagram account.
Meet the Corcráin Whinfell.🌺
The name Corcráin is a shortened form of the Irish surname name Ó Corcráin, which means "descendant of Corcrán." It is derived from the Gaelic word corcair, meaning purple. I chose to go with a purple-themed name because the Halloween Whinfell redesign had already been given an orange name and I didn't want any of the horses to have the same color-based names. Lore:
"The Corcráin Whinfell loves the warm summery months, especially from June to August. These hotter temperatures are perfect for the Corcráin as they enjoy swimming and soaking in marshy swamps and lakes. This Whinfell also loves the Marsh Cinquefoil plants that tend to grow in these environments. These purple blossoms are both eye-catching and nutritious to the Corcráin and may be the cause of their bright and vibrant coats.
The Corcráin's magical coat was based on the Purple-bordered gold moth, while their neutral coat is a dunskin roan (a buckskin dun with roan, and yes that's it for the roans in this lineup lol).
You may also notice the neutral coat has a small spot on its forehead. This was intentional. The Corcráin may be able to magically hide its form, but this is a tiny giveaway to their true selves."
