We have all been very busy in the store preparing for the redisplay our Natural History Gallery.
Here’s a lovely Flying Fox we needed to measure!
Flying Foxes are a type of megabat and can have a wingspan of up to 1.5metres! They are mainly vegetarian but can also eat insects.
Bats are so often thought of as scary, but we think he has the cutest face!
Object number NH.A3832

7 February 2023 / First couple of photos from the Horniman! The natural history galleries sure haven’t changed since about 1920.
I have two chapters left in The Great Exhibition of 1851, and I’m continuing to inch my way through Babel!
Tomorrow is museum day, and I’m back to working on the insects since my upgrade stuff is all turned in.

The Colourful World of David McKee
Until 16th April 2023, the Horniman Museum in London is holding a retrospective of the late David McKee’s colourful illustrations. This is in the horniman museum in London, not far from where I grew up - we used to go and see it a lot! I assumed all walruses looked like this untill I was in my 20s. I was watching a nature documentary with my partner when I discovered what they really looked like. It was a shock! I had been lied to my whole childhood!
She laughed. A lot.

toy animal
Stuffed animal toy, possibly in the form of an owl, consisting of white fur with two paws including claws, and two attached textile eyes. There is a hole in the skin at the front below the eyes, presumably where the beak would have been.

Despite being winter, it’s still not typical penguin weather here in London. Luckily, this little jackass penguin is from walmer climes. They live in South African waters and got their name due to the loud honking noise they make!
This specimen, may become part of a new permanent display as we will soon begin dismantling our current Natural History Gallery.

19 February 2023 / Hasn’t been too much to report, thus the long silence! This is going to seem like a lot, but most of my time has been spent reading, which is kind of boring to report on.
Over the last week, I sent in all of my funding application stuff, got confirmation that we’re done with page proofs for the second paper, had a data-centric meeting about a couple more papers, took notes on Making Entomologists, read and took notes on The Evolutionary Synthesis, and started Dear Lord Rothschild.
I also did a hell of a spring cleaning today! And over the weekend, I binge read Under the Whispering Door - Babel is a lot, and I needed something cozy.
Tomorrow, I need to do some code testing and keep reading Dear Lord Rothschild.

TetZooCon 2024
I am back from the UK and what was the „final“ TetZooCon ever. As every year before it was two great days of talking with fellow natural history enthusiasts, bleeding my wallet at stalls of awesome art and literature and of course some fascinating presentations.
The actual convention was then followed by a three day trip, the tetzootour, stopping at the Horniman Museum for Luis Rey‘s „Dinosaur rEvolution“, Lyme Regis for fossil hunting and Howletts Wild Animal Park.
