let's make some sleeves!
don't worry i'll put it below the cut, no one should be confronted with the horrors of drafting them on their dashboard without giving prior consent.
those first few photos are of the final mockup and the final sleeves. the first mockup was more to gauge length and the final width I wanted the cuff to have, so it looked like this.
Tumblr media
I wanted this to have a specific lantern shape with limited gathers because this fabric is thicc so I sewed a 1/2" dart at each of the marked points, taking the bottom edge in by 11" in the process.
Tumblr media
I ended up shortening it a lot just above where the darts ended, which left me with this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I knew it would be easier to have a single seam going horizontally than sewing a dozen darts into each one, so I was prepared for this development. I probably could have drafted something much closer to this from the start but I wouldn't want to seem too competant.
Tumblr media
I took out a lot of volume on my next mockup and settled on something very similar to what you see above.
then they were cut out from faille, the seam was covered with 1/2" horsehair braid to give them a bit more body.
Tumblr media
now, for the velvet layer, I didn't want a visible seam. It sort of ruins the flow of the fabric's pattern AND the fabric's pattern runs in vertical stripes which don't lend themselves well to the curves of the sleeves.
so instead I fussy cut out pieces and overlapped them until they formed the correct shape without any obvious breaks.
It was only after I got these pinned and partially sewn that I realized I forgot to add the gold overlay beneath them and had to re-do it all.
Tumblr media
I kept trying to machine-baste together the edges and the sleeves were like "no."
the faille folded over the seam point after I finished since the overlay was like 1/4" too short in some spots, because I didn't baste all the layers together before cutting them out and sewing them together (like I usually do).
I ended up doing it by hand, all but two of the "short spots" will be hidden in seams and the others were patched with additional appliques.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I sewed the appliques to the fabric below the horizontal seam, but this created issues with the drape when I attempted to carry it further up, so the layers are independent above that seam point, save for the top edge where they are basted/eventually seamed onto the bodice..
Tumblr media
these will be finished with matching cuffs and cotton lining.
the bottom edges were gathered from 22" down to 19" prior to the underarm seam being done up, so most of the shaping comes from the piecing, not the gathers.
(the top edge is gathered a similar amount at the armscye.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When going to baste together the top edges I decided to shorten the lining by about an inch at the center and tapering down to nothing at the underarm. This forces the fashion layer to puff out a little bit more.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then they were sewn on and probably some other stuff happened that I forgot. Anyway, voila!

How I Create Pouches for Spells
by repurposing old fabrics.
These DIY pouches are a personal and sustainable way to add an extra touch of intention to your spellwork.
Here are two methods I use: the Circular Pouch and the Sleeve Pouch. Both methods are beginner-friendly and require minimal sewing skills.
Materials Needed:
•Old fabric (such as clothes that no longer fit, sleeves, or scraps)
•Scissors
•Needle and thread (or a sewing machine)
•Cord, ribbon, or a fabric strip for tying the pouch
•Optional: Decorations (I decorate some pouches with embroidery, beads, or charms)
I experiment with different fabrics and colors for unique textures and energy. I prefer black sturdy materials for my protection spells, colorful tulle for beauty spells and blue velvet for good sleep spells.
Method A: Circular Pouch
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This method works great for making versatile pouches of any size.
1. I prepare the fabric
I find a piece of fabric I no longer need.
I use scissors to cut the fabric into a circular shape. I sometimes use a plate or lid as a guide to trace the circle.
2. I create the cord
If the fabric doesn’t have a pre-existing cord, I cut a long, thin strip from the fabric itself to use as a cord.
I make sure it’s long enough to tie my pouch securely.
3. I assemble the pouch
I place my spell items in the center of the circle.
I gather the edges of the fabric upward to enclose the items.
I tie the cord around the gathered edges to secure my pouch.
And that’s it! A quick, no-sew pouch that’s perfect for small spells and charms.
Method B: Sleeve Pouch
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This method is ideal for repurposing shirt or sweater sleeves and creates a sturdier pouch.
1. I cut the sleeve
I take an old shirt or sweater.
I cut the sleeve horizontally at the desired length to create a short fabric “pipe.” (The longer the piece, the larger your pouch.)
2. I sew the bottom
I turn the fabric inside out so the seams are on the outside.
I sew one of the open ends shut using a needle and thread.
Sometimes I reinforce the seam by stitching twice or using a strong thread.
3. I finish the pouch
I turn the fabric right-side out.
I use the open end as the top of the pouch.
I add my spell ingredients and tie it closed with a cord or ribbon.

Closing Time
Summary: For pricklenettle, Phandom Holiday Truce 2024
With twenty minutes left in his shift, an unseen ghost shows up to make his night harder. Tucker does not get paid enough for this.
Word Count: 2074
Also on AO3 and Fanfiction.net
Note: Happy Truce! This story is for @pricklenettle. I went with the Prompt 2: Danny being a creepy, mysterious fellow somewhere normal like a gas station. Prompt 5 inspired me to have Tucker be the pov character, though.... well, you'll see. 😉
Enjoy!
Just twenty minutes. Twenty minutes before closing time.
Tucker sighs, repeating the words in his head as he sweeps the front of the supermarket. The broom’s bristles scrap against the floor, the sound grating against his ears. Ten feet away, his manager surveys the square of self-checkout kiosks. One lone customer, a middle-aged man, swipes his chips and soda. The machine chimes harshly as it processes the man’s credit card.
The boy lifts one hand to massage his forehead. Just twenty more minutes.
The shopper exits passed Tucker and the teen’s gaze follows, trailing to the wide glass window, to the pitch-black outside. The doors slide open, the sound of rain crashing through the front with a spray of cold droplets.
Tucker winces at the sensation. Please, please let it stop soon. Fervently, he begs in his head.  Please let it stop before he has to run to the bus stop.
“Go sweep the produce section.” His manger’s nasally voice cuts through the silent pleading.
With a nod, the teen complies. He pushes the broom’s long head around the banana stand. The bristles scrape harshly as the lights illuminating the vegetable stands buzz sharply. And Tucker again rubs his forehead, gritting his teeth at the building headache.
Those stupid lights, this stupid broom. If his boss wouldn’t give him crap about it and would just let him wear headphones at work….
Tucker hums under his breath, repeating the chorus to his favorite Dumpty Humpty song in his head. Normally, that is a decent distraction from the overstimulating sounds. But this night….
The pounding of rain on the roof crescendos. Tucker shivers, suddenly cold. A draft blows through, from the outside doors at the front of the store, he assumes. The chill tickles his nose and he sneezes. Tiny, wet drops spray on his face.
Great. The boy huffs, wiping his nose with the back of his hand. He’s getting the cold Danny has too, isn’t he?
At least he can go home soon and collapse on his warm bed.
Tucker goes back to sweeping, humming the same Dumpty Humpty song. He sweeps up little bites of onion peel, fallen leaves from the poinsettia display, dried mud tracked in on someone’s boots. He moves in front of the carrots and cucumbers, wrinkling his nose as water mists over the produce and sprays him.
The teen comes to the end of the produce section, to the first fridge of meat. He surveys the pork chops approvingly. Oh, those ones are on manager’s special. Maybe he should-
Suddenly, the sound of a cough cuts through his thoughts. Tucker looks up, drawn to the noise.
Two aisles over, someone about his height in a red hoodie stands with back facing him. Huh? How hadn’t noticed that person before? The clink of cans shifting in a pile sounds as they pick up a can of soup.
Tucker goes back to sweeping, eyes fixed on the head of the broom as he carefully maneuvers it between the horizontal display fridge filled with pork ribs and a shelf with an offering of barbecue sauces.
The heavy thump of a can falling and Tucker’s head jerks up again. The person in the hoodie is gone, a can of chicken noodle soup rolling across the floor.
Brow winkling, the teen approaches. He picks up the luckily undented can, returning it to the display. His head tilts, peering down the pointedly empty aisle. Where did the person in the hoodie go?
Before Tucker can contemplate the mystery, the intercom crackles. “Clean up! Aisle 10!”
Tucker sighs, rolling his eyes exacerbatedly. Really? This is the second time this shift. Please don’t be throw up again, he mentally begs. Still, he carries the broom back to the supply closet near the restrooms, collecting the bucket and mop.
The teen jerkily pulls the yellow monstrosity through the store. One of its wheels refuses to spin. “Come. On.” He mutters under his breath, annoyance growing.
He passes the lunch meat and the cheese, the butter and eggs. Approaching the aisle in question, Tucker takes a breath, preparing himself for what will hopefully be a small mess. He rounds the corner and-
Milk… all over the floor. The teen’s jaw drops. Half the length of the aisle, a good twenty feet section of the floor is covered in the white liquid.
“H… how?” He can’t help but stutter. How could someone even manage to spill this much milk?
Eyes blown wide, Tucker approaches the nearest jug. Tentatively, he prods it with his shoe. The plastic crunches at the touch, jagged cracks scrapping against each other. It looks almost shattered…as if dropped from a great height.
His eyes trail over the scene once more. A dozen more crumpled jugs litter the floor, their contents all explosively dispersed.
But…. How? How could one person do this? A flicker of unease leaps in his stomach. If he didn’t know better, he would think it was the Box Ghost’s doing. Expect these are plastic jugs, not rectangular cartons. No boxes have been touched, not cardboard the cartons of eggs come in, the microwave dinners, or the sticks of butter. And most tellingly, there are no shouts of beware.
Tucker’s nose wrinkles. It would be just his luck for Boxy to show up for the end of his shift.
The teen shakes his head, dislodging the thought. That hypothetical doesn’t matter right now. He frowns hopelessly down at the now quite insufficient mop. He’s going to need those blue absorbent puppy pads. A lot of them.
Tucker turns around, leaving the mop and bucket and starting back towards the storage room. He passes the butter and eggs again. The sign for the bathroom looms in front of him. He quickly comes to the open doorway, across from the clearance rank, and-
A puff of cold on his neck. The boy stiffens. A low whisper echoes to his right, behind him. Movement out the corner of his eye, a flicker of maroon red and neon green.
Tucker freezes, head jerking to the side to look. But… nothing.
There is nothing beside him, just the freezer of meatballs and chicken nuggets.
The lights above flicker and pop, flashing brightly at the same another whisper crackles, on his other side and full of static. Tucker’s head jerks to the sound, catching another flicker, this one of something black. His body follows the movement of his gaze, turning back the way he came.
No farther spills, no customers, no annoying boss. No one to mutter or dart passed him. The walkway is the same.
Except… a spot of neon green.
Annoyance swirling in his gut, Tucker marches up to the spot. He kneels and his brow furrows at the object. A tissue, stained with globs of glowing green.
“Freaking ghosts.” The teen curses under his breath. Of course! Of course it’s a ghost.
He picks up the tissue between two fingers, nose wrinkled in disgust. What is this? The ectoplasm looks sticky and wet, glowing between the folds of the crumpled kleenex. Like some kind of ghostly booger. From what? A ghost of the common cold?
“The store closes in five minutes!” His boss’s false cheery voice cuts through the scene. “Please bring your purchases to the front.”
Tucker groans at the words, standing. Ghost or no, he still has an aisle to clean. He hurries to the storeroom, grabbing a wad of absorbent pads. He manhandles the big black trash can with wheels, pushing it out of the closet and through the open doorway.
Then a flash of green light. A crash reverberates around the corner, back in the milk aisle.
Unthinking, Tucker takes off running. He rounds the corner, the spilled milk puddles appearing in front of him once again.  A burst of cold and his legs fly out from under him.
The teen falls, landing heavily on his behind. Sudden adrenaline pounds his heart, the sound deafening in his ears. He shivers, not just from any dread but… the cold. His hand reaches for the white covering the floor, goosebumps prickling his skin. It’s frozen.
Shakily, Tucker puts his hands under him. He rises to his feet; thank goodness he’s not hurt any more than his sore tailbone. Still, his eye dart side to side, on alert.
“Look.” The teen sighs, annoyance growing. “Whoever you are, just-”
From outside, thunder crashes. The building shakes with the sound. The lights flicker, blinking out across the store.
Great, they just lost power. It’s a fleeting thought. Except-
His eyes widen at the freezers, still humming. Their fluorescent white light eerily illuminate the aisle.
“Alright.” The boy mutters, taking a step back from the slippery floor. “Dude, just turn the light back on so I can clean this.”
Ominous whispers answer, the words lost to static. To his side, a shadow passes over the freezer’s light.
Tucker turns, fumbling in his pocket. “You know what, I don’t care about the lights!” Come on. Come on. Where is that wrist ray? “Just go!”
Another boom of thunder rattles the air. The PA system shrieks, a deafening dial tone. The boy grimaces, covering his ears. Again, a shadow flickers out the corner of his eye.
The sound cuts out. The teen jerkily swivels to face the flicker, pulling out a lipstick blaster. “Don’t make me-“
The freezer door behind him slams open, the force of the glass on his back sending him to the ground. The blaster goes off, the laser sailing through the air. Harmlessly, it pings off a bakery display. Meanwhile, Tucker’s momentum sends him sliding across the slick floor on his front.
“Dude, I just want to finish my shift and go home!” The teen complains, slamming into said mid-aisle shelf.
He rolls to his side, groaning. Those bruises are going to hurt in the morning.
Neon green streaks across his vision. Again, Tucker shoots. Again, the laser flies free. And still, it fails to impact.
In response, more glass doors fling open. Three shelves collapse, dozens of frozen meals crashing onto the floor.
“Not my Hungry Man too!” The teen cries.
Back pressed against the wooden bakery shelf, Tucker pushes himself up to sit. With frustration-gritted teeth, he holds the blaster in front of him.
Static pops, filling his ears as the hum of the freezer crescendos. The ghostly fluorescent light flickers bright and dimmer. But… no hint of shadow, no ghostly green.
Eyes still intently focused ahead, Tucker reaches for his PDA. “That’s it. I’m calling Danny.” He scowls, finger over the button. “He can deal with you-“
The PDA sparks, to the technogeek’s horror. He flings it away. At the same time, a screeching reverberates, like long skeletal fingers scratching styrofoam. A milk carton rises from the open fridge. The teen stares with narrowed eyes as the plastic warps. It explodes. Drops of white liquid hang in the air for a drawn out second, before flinging across the room.
Something in Tucker snaps. He’s cold, tired, and bruised. His head hurts. His shift is almost over. Enough is enough!
“Seriously!?” He shouts, frustration giving way to rage. “I have to clean all this up?!”
In one surprisingly fluid motion, he stands. The shadows hiss, two glowing green orbs flashing into sight. They linger, just a second. But it’s enough.
Tucker shoots the blaster. And it impacts.
A pained yelp sounds. The darkness solidifies, person-shaped between one blink and the next. The green orbs, eyes, widen.
A flash of light blinds Tucker. In the next second, the store’s lights are back. The freezer doors all slam closed.
And a boy in a red hoodie crumples, falling to his knees five feet in front of him.
“Wha- Tuck?” The boy blinks, looking up.
Tucker’s jaw drops. “Danny?”
“I was in bed. What? How did I get- Acho!” A sneeze interrupts, Danny whipping glowing green snot away with his sleeve. “How did I get here?”
Tucker stares, mind churning with surprise. Then… understanding. “You!” He points accusingly. “You did this!”
“What?” Dazedly, the half ghost looks over the destruction.
“And you were, what? Sleeping haunting?!” His hands lift, exacerbated. “This is gonna take an hour to clean up!” He marches forwards, grabbing the mop and bucket, and shoving the handle at his friend. “You’re doing it!”
“But…but…” Danny stutters, blinking disbelievingly at the mess
Still, Tucker stomps away. He doesn’t get paid enough for this.
Note: Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoyed.
I debated whether to end it with Tucker storming off or if I should show more of the aftermath but decided the quick ending worked best with the prompt I was going for. Rest assured though, like two minutes after storming off, Tucker comes back and feels really bad about losing his temper. There are mutual apologies as both clean up. Danny flies Tucker home (yay for not having to wait for the bus in the rain!). And the next day, they're laughing about the entire thing.

Dress, circa 1883-1885, Scotland

Elbow-length sleeves with pleated red silk satin cuffs. Skirt, full-length, fastening on left with five metal hooks and eyes, chine overskirt pleated into waistline at front and over hips at side, side panels trimmed with vertical border of cream machine lace and frill of cream machine lace extending into lower side edges of train, centre back cut-in-one with bodice with additional width in skirt to go over bustle, extending into a long train, red silk satin frill under hem. Petticoat-style underskirt revealed in front in cream silk satin underskirt decorated with six slightly asymmetrical horizontal rows of cream machine lace. Bodice lined in printed cotton, fitted with eight metal bones and waistband. Skirt front lined with linen and printed cotton, sides and back lined with printed cotton, integral thirteen-inch wire mesh bustle with two sets of twill weave tapes to pull fullness to back to create train, balayeuse around hem of skirt and train. Waistband printed in light green ‘R. Simpson and Sons Costumiers Jamaica St. Corner Glasgow’.
Worn by Ann Smith, the wife of Robert Kirk Simpson of R Simpson and Sons.
This romantic dress is printed with roses and has machine-lace frills on the skirt. In the 1870s and 1880s fashion looked back to the late 1700s, with its flamboyant fabrics, for inspiration. The blurred effect on this evening dress is created by printing the warp prints before the fabric is woven. This ikat technique originated in Asia and was introduced to France in the mid-1700s, where it was known as chiné. Here, it’s use, together with the laced bodice and open over-skirt draped back over the hips and into the bustle, reflect the historical revival style with its imitation of an eighteenth-century open gown.

CDK: Company Expo Set (Mesh + Recolor Pack)
Tumblr media
Published: 9-14-2024 | Updated: N/A SUMMARY Cubic Dynamics by John B. Cube and Marcel Dusims forged the future with furnishings that were minimalist in design and maximalist in erudite pretension. Generations later, the company continues to produce edge-of-cutting-edge designs. Use the Cubic Dynamics Kitbash (Simmons, 2023-2024) collection to set up corporate, exposition, and office environments. Envisioned as an add-on to the Cubic Dynamics set (EA/Maxis, archived at GOS), it features minimalist and retro-futuristic objects. Find more CC on this site under the #co2cdkseries tag. Read the Backstory and ‘Dev Notes’ HERE. The COMPANY EXPOSITION SET includes 20+ items to create a conference/event space for your businesses and corporations. This set doubles as the main MESH PACK for all items in the CDK series.

[CN] MLQC’s Lucien - Strategy Game Date - English Translation (1/2)
⚠️ SPOILER ALERT!! ⚠️
This post contains a detailed spoiler for a date that has not been released in EN yet! Feel free to notify me if there are any mistakes in the translation~
Tumblr media
"Wow, if you remember someone, they must be really impressive!"
"Not at all. In fact, on most of the days we've played, he couldn't even win a pack of biscuits."
"So, about the same level as me then~"
"But MC is special to me. Whether it's ‘biscuits', 'candy', or even 'unreasonable requests', you always manage to win them over in another way."
Translation under the cut!
[T/N: Before reading the date, I highly recommend you all to read this R&S: Regarding What Book Doesn't Say (and while at it read The Victim Who Disappeared too~). This date contains important references to that R&S, and I would like to analyze this date later in comparison with it at the end of this date🥺 There's also some reference to S1 chapter 23 but I'm gonna assume that y'all already read it u.u.]
If you want to follow along with the voice, you can follow it here.
-
[Call- On The Way Home from Work]
Lucien: I just saw your missed call, what's wrong?
MC: [worriedly] I was just wondering why Professor Lucien, who clearly got off work an hour ago, still hasn't come home yet.
Lucien: [chuckles softly]  Sorry, I was held up a bit by something.
Lucien: If you're not too busy, could you bring a trolley and come pick me up at the small park outside the complex?
MC: I certainly can, but what happened?
Lucien: I was stopped by that old gentleman who often plays chess in the park, and he invited me to play a game with him.
MC:  Hmm? Why did that grandpa suddenly "abandon" his friends and come to you?
Lucien: Today, his chess friend stood him up, so he was searching the whole park for a "destined" person who could play chess.
Lucien: And on my backpack, I happened to have a chess pendant that you gave me.
MC: Oh~ But the Xianqi (Chinese chess) Grandpa plays and international chess aren't the same type, right?
Lucien: There are indeed quite big differences between the two, but luckily, I'm not too unfamiliar with the rules of Xiangqi.
MC: Judging by Professor Lucien’s tone, it seems like he has won~
Lucien: It was a narrow victory.
Lucien: However... I'm having some regrets now.
MC: Why?
Lucien: Things seem to have gotten a little out of hand after I won the game. He enthusiastically invited me to solve an endgame puzzle—
[Trivia: In chess, endgame refers to a chess problem where only a few pieces remain on the board, and the challenge is to find the best moves to win or achieve a draw.]
Lucien: And after I solved it, I found out that this puzzle has apparently been around for a few years.
MC: Wow! That's amazing...! So, doesn't that mean the brilliant Professor Lucien is going to become a big celebrity in the park?
Lucien: [sighs] ...But they're a bit too enthusiastic.
Lucien: [he sounds so helpless and dumbfounded it's cute LOL] To celebrate, that grandpa and the elderly watching the game gave me all the eggs, rice, and cooking oil they got from the supermarket.
Lucien: I couldn't refuse at the moment, so now I'm stuck here, overwhelmed by this weighty goodwill.
MC:  Pfft, hahaha~ So that's why you asked me to bring a trolley and rescue you!
MC: I think I see you! Hmm? Are you buying something?
Lucien: [chuckles] Mm, I just found a flower vending machine here.
Lucien: After all, I did ask my girlfriend to come rescue me, so I figured I should at least buy a bouquet of flowers as a thank you.
[Prologue-Surprise Journey]

MC: You're going to compete against the world champion of 3D chess next week?!
When I arrive home from work and step into the entryway, the news hits me like a brick, leaving me frozen in place.
[Trivia: 3D Chess is a variant of traditional chess that adds a third dimension with multiple horizontal layers. It's different and more complex compared with classic 2D chess because besides being able to move horizontally, it can also move vertically between layers, and naturally, it has different rules compared to the classic (I tried to search the rules of one type of 3D chess and ended up being confused at it HAHA). Most ppl def can't easily learn it in one try unless you're Xu Mo]
Lucien calmly takes my bag and nods slightly.
Tumblr media
Lucien: Mm, the tournament organizers invited Carl to play a simultaneous exhibition.
[Trivia: In chess simultaneous exhibition means one player plays against multiple opponents at the same time]
Lucien: Besides me, there will also be many 3D chess players and enthusiasts participating.
MC: ...Wait a minute, Lucien, you haven't been scammed, have you?
MC: There are a lot of scams going around these days that seem to trick people with things like registration fees.
[gurl why would you think that the great and mighty™️ Professor Lucien would get scammed🤣]
Lucien: That possibility certainly can't be ruled out, but I've already confirmed it.
Lucien can't help but chuckle a bit and opens the official website of the International Chess Federation.
Following the movement of his fingertips, I quickly found Lucien's name on the shortlist.
MC: So awesome…
MC: You've obviously only been playing 3D chess for a month, yet you're already able to participate in such a competition.
Lucien: This type of game is actually not that difficult once you grasp the rules.
MC: ...That's precisely something a genius would say.
He winks a little smugly, smiles, and pulls me into his arms.
Lucien: So, would MC like to go together?
Lucien: I recall you don't seem to be very busy next week.
MC: Of course, I would like to!
MC: This is your first time participating in a chess tournament, so I wouldn't want to miss it.
Lucien: That's good to hear. Otherwise, I might have to repack my suitcase.
Following his gaze, I notice he's already packed some of my clothes in the suitcase and I can't help but laugh.
MC: You already knew I'd say yes.
Lucien: Mm, after all, it seems like MC can never bring herself to turn down my requests.

Tumblr media
MC: The guesthouse you chose is so beautiful!
I lean out from the villa window and look outside; the warm breeze passes through the tropical orange trees, stirring sweet orange-scented ripples on the clear pool water.
MC: This garden is exactly like a scene from an American movie, I feel like a pool party is about to start any second now.
Lucien: [chuckles] After I finish my competition, we might as well have a pool party here too.
MC: Sounds good! Then I…
I spin around excitedly, but then my gaze is suddenly caught by a vibrant blaze of crimson, making me fall silent.
Tumblr media
Lucien is dressed in a cherry-red suit paired with an olive-green tie, giving off a bold retro vibe.
Complementing this look, a sleek leather belt with a ring buckle and a tilted round hat adds a touch of simplicity and style.
Tumblr media
Lucien: [teasingly] If you keep looking at me like that, I might actually get a little shy.
Despite saying so, he doesn't shy away and instead approaches me with a smile.
MC: It's just so stunning... Did this Great Chess Player pick this outfit specifically for the competition?
Lucien: There will be a lot of people at the competition, so maybe this will help me better attract the attention of a certain little lady.
[T/N: Great Chess Player (大棋手 - dà qíshǒu) is how MC teasingly and admiringly refers to him while little lady (小姑娘 - xiǎo gūniang) is Lucien's special term of endearment to MC. So yes, he's the one picking the outfit to attract her attention, just like male peacocks displaying their feather🤣 Please don't be harsh on his color choice because he literally can't see them🥲]
MC: [pouts] Humph, I want to protest~
MC: Even without any help, I can still instantly spot you in a crowd!
Lucien: [chuckles] Of course, I believe that. But I also have a selfish motive.
He gently pinches my puffed-out cheeks and meets my gaze with a smile.
Tumblr media
Lucien: [gently and sincerely] Just thinking about you watching me throughout the competition... it'll likely fill me with strength.

Tumblr media
In the vast venue, a hundred chess players are seated at their tables, eagerly awaiting the arrival of Carl, the world champion.
The audience seats are already packed with hundreds of spectators, and the broadcasting equipment, along with the commentators, is set up and ready to go.
Feeling the solemn atmosphere, I shrink back a little and quickly walk over to the family seating area within the venue to sit down.
Host: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the International 3D Chess Championship!
Host: Here today, we have chess elites gathered from all around the globe.
Host: They have emerged from fierce preliminary rounds and will face Carl, the champion of the International 3D Chess Championship, in a head-to-head battle.
Just then, on the large screen suspended above the venue, a refined-looking man is waving and greeting the crowd below.
Host: Following the classic tournament rules, each player will have 120 minutes to make their first 40 moves, after which they will have another 60 minutes to complete the rest of the game.
Host: To ensure fairness and smooth progression, a team of referees will supervise the entire match.
Host: Please remain quiet during the match so that the players can concentrate.
Host: We hope you all enjoy this feast of intellect and strategy!
As the match bell rings, the first game appears on the big screen.
Carl opens with a knight's jump, using the black pieces. Time flows in silence for a long while before his opponent finally makes their move.
Just as the unfamiliar and complex cross-layer moves are starting to make my head spin, the game reaches Lucien's table.
Tumblr media
Facing Carl's aggressive opening, Lucien doesn't panic. Calm and collected, he establishes his defensive formation.
I quietly note the position of his piece, trying to summon the knowledge I learned from playing classic chess with him in an effort to keep up with the game.
However, as the game progresses, I quickly become lost amidst the complexity of the situation.
Thankfully, that splash of cherry-red color always manages to blur out the world, allowing me to clearly see him every time I look up.
While waiting for his turn, Lucien leans back and intently watches the live screen, unlike the others who are engrossed in studying their own games.
[This passage implies that, unlike other players who are focused solely on their own games, Lucien is observing the matches on the live screen to study the world champion's strategies and gameplay. Also, this passage is an interesting parallel with how Lucien sees the world - to him, her color blurred the world around her, allowing him to see her clearly🥺]
Yet whenever it's his turn to make a move, he does it extremely quickly.
After a few rounds, players on the field are gradually eliminated and leave, but Lucien remains seated, his remaining time nearly equal to Carl's.
Most of the time, his expression remains calm, only occasionally does his brow and eyes curve slightly as if he's noticed some clever moves.
Even though he's far away, I feel like I can see that fascinating and captivating world through his eyes.
I gaze for a long time, so long that I only snap back to reality when Carl sits down opposite Lucien.
The stage is empty, and before I realize it, only that red figure remains.
The black and white sides are locked in a tense struggle, like a small battlefield. Pieces fell constantly, yet new attacks were relentlessly launched.
A hushed silence gradually spreads over the audience. Finally, the timer goes off, and the referee, who has been observing from the sidelines, rises to his feet.
He takes a step forward, waiting for Lucien to put down the piece in his hand, pick up a pen and write something, then seal the paper in an envelope.
As if on cue, the people around me rustle and leave. I instinctively get up as well, feeling puzzled, and head towards Lucien, who is also departing.
MC: Is the match over?
Tumblr media
Lucien: Not yet, it's just that the official match time is up. Now the moves are sealed, and the match will resume in an hour.
MC: I see. So, what do you think?
Lucien: Although the situation is a bit tense right now, I've more or less deduced the strategy he'll likely use.
Tumblr media
He narrows his eyes, looking like a smug little fox.
MC: Wow, I knew you were good, but I'm blown away that you've been able to hold your own against the world champion for so long…
Lucien: Would you mind holding onto that compliment until the 26th move and telling me again later, MC?
MC: Um?
I suddenly figured something out, and in that instant, I found the answer in those confident eyes.
Lucien: By then, I'll have won.
=[Part 2]=
Lucien wins.
At the 21st move in overtime, Carl topples his cornered king piece and concedes defeat.
It's not that I never thought he would win, but seeing Lucien standing on the podium, the clear reality of his victory washes over me along with the tide of applause.
I clap with extra force, wanting to convey all my heartfelt congratulations to him.
MC: Congratulations, grand champion!
Tumblr media
As the award ceremony ends, after waiting by the side of the stage, I step forward and greet the person before me with a big hug.
An icy chill clings to him, yet the voice that falls upon my ear is incredibly gentle.
Lucien: [chuckles] I received all of MC's congratulations.
Lucien: Even though you were a bit far away, the way you clapped so enthusiastically was especially adorable, just like a little seal.
MC: Of course! As your girlfriend, I can't let myself be outdone by anyone else…
??: Mr. Lucien, congratulations.
A stranger's voice suddenly interrupts the conversation as Carl, dressed in a suit, walks over in surprise.
Carl: I'll always remember this match, I hope to see you again on the competition stage someday.
Tumblr media
Lucien: Thank you, there will be a chance.
Lucien nods politely, and only after watching the other person disappear into the crowd does he speak, his voice tinged with uncertainty.
Lucien: Was that Carl?
MC: Hmm? Even a superbrain like you can have face blindness?
Lucien: Perhaps I was too focused on the chessboard, so I didn't pay attention to his appearance.
Lucien: Besides, his clothes seem completely different from what he wore this afternoon.
Seeing him explain earnestly, I can't help but laugh.
MC: [laughs] If I were Carl, I think I would be more hurt that my opponent, whom I faced for half a day, doesn’t remember me than about losing the match.
Tumblr media
MC: Speaking of which, you don't forget everyone you've played chess with, do you?
Tumblr media
Lucien: [stunned as if hit by a memory of someone from his distant past] …
It’s as if something leaps into the depths of those dark eyes along with my words, and they suddenly blink quickly.
Lucien: Not quite everyone.
MC: Wow, if you remember someone, they must be really impressive!
Lucien: Not at all.
Lucien: In fact, on most of the days we've played, he couldn't even win a pack of biscuits.*
MC: So, about the same level as me then~
I can't help but curve my lips into a smile, and it seems as though my rising smile also slowly melts that touch of indifference.
Tumblr media
Lucien: [chuckles] You're right, it's about the same level. But MC is special to me.
Lucien: Whether it's ‘biscuits', 'candy', or even 'unreasonable requests', you always manage to win them over in another way.
MC: [laughs happily] Hahaha, that friend of yours would probably think you're way too biased if he heard you say that!
Lucien smiles faintly as if my words allow him to vaguely picture that person before his eyes—
Tumblr media
Fuzzy... distant... yet somehow a little vivid.
Lucien: Perhaps, but all of those are just assumptions.
MC: Even if they are assumptions, aren't they still based on deductions from the past?
I hook my finger around his, gently swaying our hands together.
MC: Even if the past may be gone, isn't there still “something” from it that continues to run through your life in different forms;
MC: Accompanying you as you pass by and meet many amazing, yet lovely and warm people?~
Lucien: Of course, I have never denied that.
It was as though an imperceptible wound within those profound eyes had been quietly mended, allowing a trace of a smile to escape.**
Wanting to keep that smile lingering for a while longer, I wrinkle my nose.
Tumblr media
MC: But... I've clearly played chess with you too, and several different kinds! Yet the first person Professor Lucien thought of wasn't me!
Tumblr media
Lucien: …
Seeing his eyes widen slightly, I smile with satisfaction.
MC: Hmph, looks like I need to work harder! In that case, I'll start by learning 3D chess!
I take the prize chessboard from Lucien's hands, giving it a gentle shake.
MC: Please teach me, Teacher Lucien.

[T/N]
*: the biscuits!!! I'm sobbing ;-;, turns out Lucien still remembers Fan Zihang/Zack so clearly... I hope we'll get another mention of Fan Zihang/Zack on his birthday too huhu.
**: I'm taking liberties in translating this one 😂. The original line is “那双幽深的眼瞳里似有道小小裂隙被悄悄填上,终于泄 出一点笑意。” which if literally translated it will be “In that pair of deep and dark eyes, it was as if a small crack had been quietly filled up, finally revealing a hint of a smile.”. The 'crack' can symbolize an unhealed wound from the past. As it gradually fills, this wound is slowly mending, allowing him to release some of his past burdens and letting a hint of joy show through his eyes. Or, you can also think of it as a frozen lake that slowly melts and reveals a small crack, allowing the sunlight to fill in and showing what's in the water all this time (there's happiness from those past memories too).

So, here's what X-Men 97 did that TBB did not, for its main character death. Obviously, huge X-Men 97 and TBB spoilers.
The death happens at a pivotal moment story wise, but is NOT immediately abandoned for other plot.
Remy (Gambit) dies towards the end of an episode which is in and of itself a real jaw-dropper, much like Plan 99. Out of nowhere a safe haven for mutants is being glassed, and Remy sacrifices himself to put a stop to it, because he's a little crazy but also well aware of what he's capable of and knows it might be their only chance to save SOME of these people who are his fellow mutants. The episode ends with his lover, Rogue--who's finally decided she agrees with Remy on things and is going to choose him and the X-Men over an alternative--holding his lifeless body in her arms.
Tech, on the other hand, dies 1/3 into an episode and vanishes from sight. Our POV character here, Omega, is injured and doesn't witness most of the ensuing escape, so when she wakes up, she demands they go back for him, crying, and we see Wrecker cry and Hunter explain he didn't make it.
...and then the episode keeps going. They're betrayed. A villain tosses Tech's broken goggles at Hunter and threatens them. Omega is captured, the remaining members of the Batch barely escape. For almost twenty minutes of runtime AFTER Tech dies, the story keeps going and has NOTHING to do with him dying (save the dig about the goggles). His death gets maybe, at most, 2 entire minutes of focus between Omega and Wrecker's reactions, Hunter's when Hemlock gives him the goggles, and Echo looking at the empty pilot's chair. That's it; for the bulk of the episode Tech's death has next to ZERO involvement in the story. It's not the climax. it's just A Thing Which Happened, and that massively devalues it from a narrative viewpoint. No one stops for more than a single breath to react to it, thus we as the audience don't.
(If anyone is winding up with 'that's because they can't due to the everything', this is why it's NOT GOOD WRITING. If you want the death to matter to your viewers/audience then you need to MAKE the time for it in your story, somehow. This isn't real life, you DO in fact control the horizontal and the vertical when making your plot.)
In X-Men 97, the death is the immediate focus of the next episode and a character's entire arc of the ensuing episodes. In TBB, it's a footnote.
In the following X-Men 97 episode, Remy has a funeral which Rogue doesn't attend, not because she doesn't care but because she's off raging against the machines, trying to find those responsible and kill them. There's a gorgeous eulogy for Remy, some thinking back on who he was and what he meant to them, a friend angry at Rogue for not being with them. It's so good. We cut to Rogue, absolutely furious with grief and looking to take it out on, well, everyone. She winds up putting herself into a coma as a result.
Literally nothing like this happens for Tech. Nothing close. There's a several month timeskip in S3 eps 1-3 which negates any immediate mourning or revelations to people who wouldn't know (Crosshair, Phee, Shep and Lyana), and we see NONE of Wrecker, Hunter, OR Echo's processing. Just what we saw in Plan 99, which again, is almost nothing. For a main character who as of S2 had the third most screen time of any character.
In X-Men 97, Remy keeps coming up as someone to remind them of what they're fighting for, what he would want for them. Tech is a skillset and a pair of goggles.
Remy is the first thing on Rogue's mind when she wakes up from her coma. She's instantly grieving him all over again, and mentions him numerous times throughout the remaining episodes as someone who wouldn't want this for them, or would have hoped for that. He's a guide for her even though he's gone. The rest of the characters reflect on him off and on--not his skills or abilities, but who he was, his nature. Remy's death completely changes Rogue's behaviors, almost 180 degrees, as well.
Tech is mentioned for what he could do, not what he liked or didn't like, how he felt about things, save for once: when Phee reveals he told her all about Crosshair. This is the only time someone talks about him like people talk about Remy in X-Men 97, and it happens twelve episodes after he died.
No one's actual narrative course changes trajectory in the case of Tech's death either. No one is shown making different decisions based on his loss (just the lack of his skills), no one is bringing him up as a rallying call for themselves, nothing. He is excised from the show in terms of his emotional, character impact. The loss is of someone who can decrypt things or knows stuff, not of a beloved sibling.
Remy's presence remains throughout the rest of X-Men 97, despite him dying in episode 5 of 10. Tech vanishes and becomes an occasional reason they have to do something the hard way and a background prop.
If you want to know how to actually write a main character death and have it MATTER and make it good story telling, watch X-Men 97.
