The painting shown here depicts the living room of the house. The tiled splashback above a stove is clearly recognisable as well as the golden knobs on the side of the stove.

The knobs were used as hand warmers, but were also taken to sea by the men as a sign of home, and good luck. The knob was only replaced when they returned but if the men stayed at sea, the knob never came back, so that today many of the old stoves have hardly any knobs left.
