SUMMARY: Emma and Colt have been childhood best friends since forever, they were both inseparable. In middle school they became something more but when Colt had to move with his mom away from LA all the way to Miami, things started to change between them. A small misunderstanding leads to the end of their relationship. Years later they meet again at the most unlikely place. Will Emma and Colt be able to mend what has been broken between them? Or will it continue to crash and burn?

A/N : I’m here with another chapter from my Rom-COM series and for the for the first time in forever I finally managed to write something below 2K words!

Summer 2019

The rumbling sounds of engines revving filled the streets of El Segundo as the street racers lined their cars up on the starting line. While the sound of the crowds cheer in the background for their favorite drivers.

Emma sat in the driver's seat of her GtR R34, both hands on the steering wheel. Playing with the throttle of her car letting it’s engine roar as she readies herself for the race. “Keep your focus, find your momentum.” She murmured under her breath.

“Hey barbie, why don’t you give me a kiss once I win this race.” Salazar hooted at her with a wide grin. “Pretty smug for a guy who’s never won a race against me before.” She sneers back at him. “We’ll see about that!” He scowls then looks away.

The organizer steps up to wave the flag. Beside Emma five other cars starts revving their engines. “Racers are you ready..set...GO!”

Emma releases the clutch and punches the gas. Her car zooms ahead with the other races leaving dust of smoke behind the starting line. The crowd cheers as the vehicles speed away from the lot, moving further away into the deserted street. Salazar manages to get ahead of Emma, blocking her path every time she tries to overtake him. She takes a quick look at the rearview mirror and sees the other cars behind her. Changing gears she manages to divert herself from behind Salazar, now both their cars are now racing neck in neck.

Salazar notices her next to him, his brows furrow. “You ain’t passing princess.” He said gritting his teeth and picking up speed. The road reaches a wide corner and they start to drift but Salazar's car takes a wide corner causing his car to fall back behind Emma’s. “Too wide asshole!” She howls and speeds past him. They finally pass the last corner, leaving a long stretch towards the finish line, with only a short distance left Emma hits the NOS button which causes her car to go into overdrive in just mere seconds just in time to cross the finish line, winning the race. Her car drifts to a stop followed by Salazar and the other drivers behind her.

The crowd cheers at her victory and the organizer walks up to her. “I believe this is yours.” She grins, handing her a stack of cash worth 10 grand. “Here’s a tip.” Emma smiles, and hands the organizer a few dollar bills before turning to where Salazar and the other guys who raced were standing. “Maybe next time boys.” She winked and walked away to join the rest of the crowd at the sideshow.

Loud music filled the air and a set of colorful light illuminated the abandoned industrial park. Engines roars as driver's lift their hoods and compared their rigs. Emma scans the area looking for her friends.

“Not bad for a girl. You race here often, sweetheart?”

She turns to see a boy off by himself leaning against his white motorcycle with his arms folded.

“Wouldn’t you like to know?” She quirks an eyebrow at him while crossing her arms.

The boy laughs. “Don’t flatter yourself too much, sweetheart. Smugness doesn’t look good on you.”

The nerve of this guy, who does think he is? “Yeah cause you’re such a charmer.” She claps back and gave a sarcastic eye roll.

As if on cue Logan arrives. “Hey babe.” He grinned, placing his hand on the small of her back and giving her a quick kiss. “Vaugh told me you kicked ass during the race against Salazar and the others just now.”

“Kick ass? I basically killed them on the streets tonight.” She beamed proudly.

“Sorry I wasn’t there to witness your victory, boss had a last minute job he wanted me to handle.” Logan turns to the stranger on the motorcycle, his eyes narrowed. “Is this guy bothering you?”

“Relax prince charming, I was just keeping your girlfriend here company while you were late.” The boy replied with a grin.

“Everythings fine Logan, we were just talking. I Promise.” She assures Logan giving his arm a soft squeeze.

The stranger swings one leg over his motorcycle. He looks right at Emma and winks. “See you around, sweetheart.” He revs his bike and guns ways. Logan glares after him.

A little while later Emma and Logan manages to find the rest of the group amongst the crowd, they decided to go to Kelso’s for a late night snack. When they return back to the garage they notice Teppei in his office discussing matters with someone.

“Who’d you think the boss is speaking to at this hour?” Toby asked with an eager tone in his voice.

Mona shrugs. “Probably some business associate.”

“At this hour?” Toby raises an eyebrow turns to the office door. “I wanna eavesdrop.”

“That’s not a good idea.” Ximena advises him but he is already peering his ear by the door. Just then Teppei’s office door flies open. He glares at Toby who is still crouched with his ear pressed to the door. “Ahem.” Teppei clears his throat furrowing his brows at Toby.

“Sorry boss, I was just uh… cleaning your door. Look all done.” He stuttered and walks towards where the rest of the crew were standing.

Teppei steps out of the office, his expression emotionless as he looks at the crew.

“Everything alright boss?” Logan asked with his arms folded.

“Everything is fine.” Teppei assures him. “Now that you’re all here, there’s someone I’d like you to meet.”

As soon as he said it a figure steps out from his office. Emma and Logan eyes go wide when they see that it’s the stranger from the sideshow. He gives a smug look when he sees the two standing in front of him.

“What the hell is he doing here?” She whispered to Logan.

“No idea but this better be good.” He replied, eyes glaring at the stranger. The rest of the crew cocked an eyebrow wondering who the person standing in front of them was.

“Everyone this is my son, Colt. He will be joining us temporarily and will only be working for us by the book. Is that understood?”

Emma stammers back her eyes go wide open. Colt? As in Colt Kaneko? The smug asshole at the sideshow was Colt? Her Colt? How could she recognize someone she practically grew up with all those years ago? There was definitely a lot that had changed about him. The Colt she remembered was shorter, skinnier. But the Colt standing in front of her? He was different, he had grown a foot taller than her, maybe even more, his skinny figure was now replaced with toned muscles in all the right places and his face was much clearer. Hitting puberty definitely did him a lot of favors. But how could she have not seen it the moment they met on the sideshow. Or better yet did he recognize her?

“C—Colt?” She stuttered and he gave a curious look. “Yeah that’s my name?” As if instinctively she approaches him and gives him a hug.

“Geez Logan, you really need to tell your girlfriend to stop hugging strangers. It gets creepy.” Mona smirked at Logan who looks confused at Emma.

Colt is taken aback when she suddenly comes up to hug him. What in the world is this girl doing? His body stiffens, slightly confused but as he took in her scent he couldn’t help but notice how familiar it was to him.

“Emma?” He murmured under his breath. Like her, he couldn’t believe that he didn’t recognize her as soon as he laid eyes on her at the sideshow. She was so different from the Emma he grew up with. She had coloured her jet black hair into a rose gold pastel color, she had tattoos on her body and she wore makeup which she didn’t do before. Even the way she dressed was different. But she was still beautiful maybe even more than she was before.

His body relaxes under her embraced and hugged her back, he didn’t realize how much he had missed her. But then memories of their break up start surging back, all the pain and anger he went through. She broke his heart. Remembering all this his body stiffens again as he pulls back.

“Emma, you look different.” He said with a flat voice then straightens his jacket before turning to his father, ignoring Emma like he couldn’t care less and at that moment she feels her heart shatter.

“So pops, you gonna introduce me to the crew or are we just gonna just stand here and stare at each other all night?”

Teppei introduces the team, Toby enthusiastically shakes Colt’s hand while Ximena gives him a big bear hug. Mona nods at him and finally it’s down to Logan who glares at Colt.

“So Logan, you must be my pops new pet. Glad to see he still does the occasional charity work.” Colt sneered giving Logan a smug look.

“You’re lucky you’re Kaneko’s kid or I‘d beat your smug ass to the ground right now.” Logan retorts.

While Teppei and Logan are in the office discussing business. Colt, Toby and Ximena are at another corner talking about the new engine Toby just installed in one of the cars they just got. Mona saunters over to Emma, who’s leaning on the hood of her car with her arms crossed glaring at Colt.

“What’s the story between you and Junior over there?” Mona asked leaning next to Emma pulling her out of her thoughts.

“He used to live next door to me when I was a kid.” She answered.

“That does not explain the whole tension vibe I just witnessed. Were you guys together or something?”

“We… We were close.” She replied giving a half smile.

“That’s not a no.”

Emma gave a half shrug. “It’s... Complicated.” She looks back at Colt who still pretends like she doesn’t exist. Could he still be holding a grudge of their break up after all this year? But he was the one who cheated. Emma shook her head trying to get rid of Colt from her mind. “Look Mona, I’m really tired so like tell Logan I went to bed already.

Mona leans back at the hood of Emma’s car, chewing her gum and blowing it into a bubble while observing her surroundings. In one corner, she sees Emma climbing up the stairs to the loft. At Teppei’s office Logan walks out while Colt walks in, Colt making sure he bumps into Logan’s shoulder as he goes making Logan scowl at him. The bubble pops and she draws it back into her mouth. Her lips curved into a mischievous grin. “Well this is going to be interesting.”

I would love to see something a little softer with Miami? I like the whole idea that Miami is a planner, who plans everything (a night out; fancy dinner, expensive gifts, opera, sex) down to the last detail because he is a control freak. Reader on the other hand, spoils the whole night by doing the opposite of what he wants and they end up eating fastfood, no opera and she spills ketchup on their new dress. Hope you feel like making something out of it, it doesn't have to been totally like that!

Miami wouldn’t call himself a control freak, per se, but compared to the Ricks who were willing to fly by the seats of their pants and just improvise their way through life, he enjoyed a bit more planning and attention to detail.

Tonight, for example, was to be classy. A nice dinner at the restaurant that looked over the city (the one where prices weren’t listed in the menu); digestifs and continued good conversation (she was interesting to talk to, not like some women without two brain cells to rub together); then off to the opera with her on his arm (looking stunning and making other men jealous); then back to his penthouse, where he wouldn’t be against having sex on the balcony (with the city lights as a back drop).

He’d used a bribe to secure the reservation at the restaurant. He paid handsomely for box seats at the theater. His jeweler had procured a small selection of Art Deco earrings; Miami hemmed and hawed between simple drop earrings with diamonds and Egyptian revival earrings that had scarabs carved from labradorite.

In the end he chose both. One as a gift for tonight; the other for another time. His jeweler put each set in velvet boxes for him.

Without the need to request it, his favorite suit was pressed and laid out for him. His shoes were shined expertly as well. Miami knew that even after he’d left, his manservant would freshen the flowers throughout the penthouse, make sure there was plenty of champagne chilling, and go through the place with a fine-toothed comb to verify it was picture perfect.

Everything was ready. Dressed, cologned, tickets in his inner pocket and hinged box with the scarab earrings in another, Miami felt able to take a sigh of relief.

And then--

--she forgot.

Sometimes her work was crazy-busy. It must have been one of those days that just exploded, because his texts of, “Where are you?” and “Are you home yet?” went unanswered. Miami sat and stewed and barely restrained himself from blowing up her phone with more and more messages.

Six o’clock--the time of their dinner reservation--came and went. There was still the possibility of making it to the theater at eight. That hope shrunk smaller and smaller as the minutes ticked by. When his phone finally, finally buzzed with a return message from her, however, it was twenty minutes before the curtain rose.

“I’m home!” she’d texted.

“Date night, remember?” he’d sent back, and almost immediately after hitting send his phone rang.

He didn’t even have a chance to say hello. She instantly filled his ear with teary apologies. She was so sorry, she had forgotten because of work and she knew he’d planned a whole night and--

Miami interrupted her by telling her he was going to be at her place in less than thirty minutes.

That was met with protests that she wasn’t going to be good company tonight, she ruined everything for him, she needed a shower, she was tired--

Miami repeated that he’d be there in thirty minutes, and she needed to get ready.

Then he ended the call. He hoped she heard the smile on his face.

Thirty minutes later, on the dot--again, not a control freak, just punctual--Miami rang the bell at her front door. She opened it, still wrapped in a towel from her shower and looking frazzled. She still apologized a mile a minute for ruining the evening, that he looked so good and put together and she looked like a sack of potatoes, and there was no way she was going to be able to get ready and look good enough for him--

Miami shushed her. He told her to dry her hair and put it up. Put on her make up. Relax.

While she rushed to the bathroom to do as he said, he went through her closet and found a suitable dress. Nothing glitzy, as he envisioned originally, but something more fun with a shorter skirt. He located heeled shoes to match and stood with everything outside her bathroom while she finished putting herself together.

So their witty and delightful banter? It started while she was applying mascara and he was holding her shoes by their straps. Their nice dinner in an intimate booth, waited on by a fleet of servers? It ended up being supermarket sushi, shared on the hood of his Bentley. He did snag a bottle of champagne, but it was mostly warm, and they drank it from the bottle. The opera? There was a free concert in the park, where a band of young people played enthusiastically, if not one hundred percent professionally.

She accidentally got wasabi on her skirt. He managed to dribble champagne down his front. By that point, neither cared, and both laughed it off. Driving home, even though he told her he needed his hand to shift, she insisted on holding it.

He couldn’t help but smile at how widely she grinned.

At his penthouse, they retired to his balcony, as he’d anticipated. He offered another drink, with a glass, this time! She accepted with a laugh. He popped the cork on a new bottle, poured her a flute that was almost overflowing, and handed it over. She gulped it to prevent it from spilling on her, a little tipsy, laughing the whole time.

Later, he presented her the earrings. She gasped and exclaimed over them. It wasn’t in public, as he’d had imagined, with an audience of men jealous they weren’t him, and women jealous they weren’t her. But that was okay; her delight was enough.

Under the night sky brightened by light pollution from the city, they sat close together and held hands. Their conversation remained lively until, well past midnight, it waned into comfortable silence.

They didn’t have sex, like he’d planned. It’d been a long day for her, and an evening out didn’t make her less tired. Miami took her inside. He undressed her carefully and slipped her into satin and lace déshabillé. He directed her to the en suite to clean up, and she returned with her hair loose and fresh-faced.

Miami, dressed for bed himself, turned down the bed and helped her in. She snuggled against him, thanking him for a nice evening as he extinguished the lights. In the dark, he nodded, which she felt. She told him she’d make it up to him, having completely derailed his plans. He replied mock-seriously that he expected her too, to which she giggled and bit playfully at his chest. Cautioning her not to start something she wasn’t prepared to finish only made her nip him again, but before it went too far she settled down.

Pleasantly warm and slightly dizzy from the alcohol, she sighed and drifted to sleep. Her breathing slowed and became even, and Miami went to sleep to its cadence.

The history of cinema is filled with cars that have proven both lastingly memorable and iconic in the realms of popular culture. The DeLorean time machine from "Back to the Future" and Ecto-1 from "Ghostbusters," the Dodge Challenger of "Vanishing Point" and the Mustang/Charger duo in "Bullitt," the Volkswagen Bug in the "Herbie" series of movies and the mean Plymouth Fury in "Christine," to name just a few. But no list like this would ever be complete without the inclusion of Max Rockatansky's customised Ford XB Falcon "Pursuit Special" or "Black-on-Black" as seen in the first two "Mad Max" films (the oft-used "Interceptor" name is a misappropriation from a line of dialogue from the second movie). Nobody had any idea just how incredibly successful George Miller's original low-budget dystopian movie about a cop trying to stay sane in a society barely holding itself together, with the loss of his family ultimately driving him to a road of personal vengeance at the movie's climax, would become. Not only was it the most profitable film in Australia's history (no doubt helped by the movie's shoestring budget), but also made Miller and star Mel Gibson into celebrities. Thus a sequel was not long in coming, this time saddled with a much bigger budget, and changing the aesthetics away from a dystopian future to that of a post-apocalyptic Western with cars and filled with gangs fighting over scraps of gasoline to keep their machines still moving.

With an established distributor, it was no surprise that the sequel also proved even more successful, with the movie re-titled abroad as "The Road Warrior" to mitigate the possibility of confusion over a sequel whose first part many had not even known of due to problems with the original's distribution. Thus it was this second movie that also ended up being many people's first touch with Mad Max and solidified the franchise's aesthetic for all the future films, with humanity's descent into a tribal post-society a marked characteristic that subsequently left many bewildered over how different the first movie in this series truly was when seeing it out of sequence the way so many did. Of course, with so much focus on high octane action and souped-up cars, the hero car had to be something truly distinctive. Beginning in the mid-1960s, Australia's car manufacturers had increasingly began to take on to the rising muscle car wars that were sweeping across the United States by pushing out their own, increasingly original home-made alternatives. By the turn of the 1970s, Australia was already home to several manufacturers who had taken the lead from their American examples and forged their own path that was entirely their own and wholly successful even when the muscle car days were drawing to a close in the States.

Ford Australia was one of the big ones at this and particularly their steady appropriation of the humdrum compact Falcon into a brawny performance machine saw its apex when they introduced the third generation XA Falcon in 1970.Though the Falcon continued to exist in more modest forms as well, it could be tickled up significantly with a range of V8 engines, including the 351 Cleveland, that were mostly made in Australia now as well. The XA, however, didn't last very long and was supplanted by the face-lifted XB model in 1973, which gave it an increased muscular style over its predecessor. For the film, director Miller and producer Byron Kennedy acquired a white '73 Falcon GT, which was then modified by the Melbourne-based customising firm Graf-X with added wheel flares, spoilers both on the roof and the rear deck, and a "Concord" nosecone and air dam designed by Peter Arcadipane, who also supplied similar nose kits for other customers to install on the XA and XB Falcons. The most notable feature was the installation of a fake Weiand supercharger over the engine, which on film could be engaged through a switch on the gear shifter, but which in reality was operated simply by a separate electric motor giving the impression of functionality.

After filming was done, the blower and the exhaust pipes were removed when the car was sold by the filmmakers to pay off debts, but by the time the sequel came about, it was re-purchased to continue its role in the production. By that time the original blower had disappeared and was thus replaced with a new one (hence it's not quite the same as in the first movie), the air dam underneath was removed for better ground clearance, and the rear was equipped with two large gas tanks on top of the car being re-painted and weathered to show off the effects of years of hard use and robust repairs. In addition, a second car was also acquired and modified for the sequence when the car gets rolled down a hill and blown up, leaving the original still intact. Once the movie was completed, the "Last of the V8 Interceptors" sat for a few years in a wrecker yard before being again found and then restored by a man named Bob Fursenko for touring in various locations, the Falcon subsequently finding its home at the Cars of the Stars Museum in England. Today the original car is located at the Dezer Car Museum in Miami.

On the model side of things, the Pursuit Special was until 2007 effectively only available through hard-to-find plastic model kits or conversion kits, which left many enthusiasts at times needing to work out their own custom conversions in place of more official releases. However, a change to that came in late 2007 when the precision model company AutoArt unleashed the above 1:18 reproduction of the Mad Max 2 car for what was to become an influx of other subsequent offerings of the Mad Max cars over the following years, likely also helped by the release of the long-in-development "Mad Max: Fury Road" in 2015 that helped revitalise interest in the franchise. Based on the old Biante moulds, that have for years now provided high quality 1:18 models of various Australian muscle Falcons, including the XA, XB and XC coupes, it is interesting that it took so long for an actual MM variant to come out, but the wait was certainly worth it. As said, the body is clearly using the already existing stock Biante shell on which a spoiler near the rear of the roof and side flares have been attached to. These admittedly smell more like shortcuts for them to not be forced to re-craft the old moulds for these additions, but neither do they look so bad as to be truly disappointing and the fitting of these additional component are clean and tight, though the spoiler doesn’t sit quite as snuggly as one would hope.

The body is flawlessly painted all in black, with the main portion being in gleaming gloss black and the bottom skirts featuring some satin black that noticeably wraps itself upwards before the rear wheel arc towards the remnants of the rear spoiler (hence the car's alternate name "Black-on-Black"), while there is also a similarly matt black streak running across the hood in the style of American GT accent striping. Now this being the Mad Max 2 version, the body has been customised to meet the details of that film. The bottom air dam of the "Concorde" custom nosepiece (the biggest modification done to the body) is accurately missing, while the tires and wheels of course are fat and wide Goodriches, perfectly suitable for usage on "badly" kept roads where endurance counts, and are also accurately mismatched from one another front and rear. The entire backside of the car is dominated by the two, huge gas tanks that take up the entire boot area and go all the way through the old rear window frame, both sturdily strapped in with a fastener. The fitting of the doors is perfect with no ugly cracks taking away from the look of the body and neither door is left popping out due to poor fit. The doors themselves have been realistically hinged with smaller low-swing hinges, a truly positive trait that has taken hold with precision scale models over those older bulky dog leg hinges of yesteryears. Lights are also realistic and well detailed from the red/orange/red taillights, the smaller sidelights and the square Falcon XC front lights hidden behind the gold-coloured, striped mask covers, making the front end look like the headpiece of a knight's helmet.

Taking a look inside the engine compartment, we get to see the fully detailed 351 Cleveland V8 engine with all wiring, labels and other details you'd expect to see under the hood, all of it capped off with the huge blower sitting atop the engine block. In fact, no matter how hard you peer down into the engine compartment, the same attention to detail will continuously make you notice new gratifying things in its striving for authenticity. The interior itself is likewise detailed, though the insides of the car are stripped very bare of any additional material, apart from a heavy roll bar that has been added behind the driver's seat. The dash, as expected, features detailed meters and gauges (including a huge fuel gauge sadly showing a very low amount of guzzoline on board), while the gear shifter with the red supercharger activation switch attached to the side is of course also there. As per the film, the passenger seat has been removed and in its place is a sideways doggy seat attached to the door, leaving the interior considerably more barren than what the original Mad Max car would have been like. The underside is also decently enough detailed, the most noticeable component being the exhaust pipes that branch off into four separate flutes and shoot out from both sides of the car between the doors and the rear wheel arches. A nice detail is also the little explosive device strapped near the rear of the car for that little additional bit of film accuracy.

In line of that, the model comes with a number of little accessories that include a spare wheel surrounded by a chain, two jerry cans, two machetes (one housed on the driver's side door and one underneath the car beside the bomb), and a brown box of Dinki-Di dog food, complete with two separate cans that are accurate right down to the little doggy face on them. And to complete the car, Max's faithful "dog" is also included, though seeing as I can't seem to find my own, he must have wandered off into the wastleland. A point of contention may be the spotless paintjob considering the decided wear apparent on the movie car, but AutoArt later also issued a variant version with added grime and mud applied to it for those wanting closer film verisimilitude, along with one that has a detachable front end to simulate the damage the car sustains in the film’s beginning. I originally ordered this from Japan in 2007 at a rather reasonable 95 Euro cost considering current AutoArt models (including their new MM1 Pursuit Special) now sell for well over 200 Euro new, so on today's market the price that I paid would now be an absolute steal. This model itself is based on the replica car built by Gordon Hayes, which has led some to complain about inaccuracies that then were also replicated on the model, but this is an ultimate nitpicker hang-up really to not pay any mind to in face of such a hugely well crafted scale model. This particular one may be a bit hard to find today seeing its limited edition nature and being a good 10 years old now, but it is certainly a keeper if it ever comes your way.
