Hong’er didn’t mean to take the earring, really! He only noticed it when he made it to his most recent alley hideout and sat down. It rolled out from where it must have gotten caught on his clothing during the chaos. He stared at it like it was a lifeline, and in many ways, it was. It was proof that it had actually happened. He had actually been saved.

Gently, more gently than he had ever been, more gently than anyone save for two had ever been with him, he picked it up. It was small, so small to be suddenly so important to him, and… it was red.

His entire life, Hong’er had hated the color red. His mother had tried, but Hong’er knew: red was ugly and cursed and demonic. Red was the color that ruined his life, made his father turn on him, kept his family’s love from him. Now, though…

Hong’er had seen a wedding once. He remembered watching the bride parade down the street, dressed in red and looking so happy. He had resented her then. How could she be so happy while drenched in the color that had only ever brought him pain?

He stared at the earring.

Suddenly, overcome with the urge to see, see what his mother saw, see what that bride saw, his unoccupied hand reached up and tore at the bandages across his face. The light stung when it hit the exposed eye, but Hong’er couldn’t care less, focused on scrounging around until he uncovered a piece of metal shiny enough to look at his reflection in.

His ugly eye stared back at him. That red he hated… hated… hated…

He lifted the earring and held it next to his face. This symbol of his savior, it was the same color, the same shape as his eye, and yet he couldn’t hate it.

“Your eye isn’t a curse, my sweet Honghong’er,” his mother used to say. She would kiss him then, right on his eyelid, right on that cursed, ugly eye. “It’s beautiful.” 

“Beautiful,” Hong’er whispered. He lifted the earring and kissed it, aching for something he knew he couldn’t have. “Mama, he caught me. He saved me, and he wore red, and it was beautiful.”

I have more thoughts on the whole "Xie Lian is bad with kids" thing. The only times we see Xie Lian with a kid when he is not in the middle of a crisis, a war, and/or dealing with the worst luck imagineable it is with Hong'er. Every interaction he has with Hong'er is a good interaction too. Like could he have done better? Sure! But he was 17 and not a licensed child psychologist lol. Not to mention all the trusted people in his life were telling him to throw Hong'er to the dogs. In their first interaction after catching Hong'er, Xie Lian comforts him and tells him not to be afraid. Then he doesn't let anyone punish Hong'er for ruining the parade. He asks Hong'er about his parents and only sends him away when Mu Qing says that he has a home. In their next meeting after saving Hong'er from Qi Rong, he makes sure Hong'er gets medical attention and takes Hong'er with him since he didn't have anywhere safe to stay. Plus, at Taicang Mountain Xie Lian reassures Hong'er that it's not his fault that the evil spirits escaped even though his teacher said Hong'er was bad luck. After his accession, he makes sure Hong'er eats and gives him a reason to live.

All this is to say that I don't think Xie Lian is bad with kids when he isn't in impossible situations. He has a lot to learn (especially by modern standards), but he is not inherently bad with them. I don't think he wants any kids of his own anytime soon, but I wouldn't mind post-canon Xie Lian watching my kid with instructions as long as I packed snacks.

Medical visits are the only joy that Hong'er gets in the barracks. He always helps the apothecary, Xie Lian, however he can. Today, he was tasked with gathering medicinal ingredients. Diligent as ever, he found them all, plus the courage to gift Xie Lian a flower.

crying again cuz i just realised hualian are both mama's boy ohmygawd there's xie lian who intentionally cooks food in a horrible way and names them weirdly in remembrance of his mother and immediately went to talk to his mother in her resting place after finding out abt qi rong and then there's hua cheng who left home at the age of 10 after his mother (the only person who loved him at that time) dyed and still remembered one of her love songs that he sings for xie lian (it's not in the book and the author said she that she scrapped that draft off and SHE SHOULDN'T HAVE I'VE BEEN ROBBED) and i also like to believe that they both got their mom's genes CUZ HELLO ??? THEY'RE SO BEAUTIFUL ??

Xianle Trio head cannon time

XL obviously doesn't have a problem cross dressing, so what if back before the trio ascended, XL would cross dress to sneak out and he got caught by MQ one night. So of course XL would convince MQ to do it with him.

As these two are about to make it out of the palace undected, FX walks up and immediately clocks MQ but not XL. I can just imagine FX just absolutely tearing into MQ and this mystery girl he's trying to sneak out with, talking about how disappointed Dianxia would be if he found out.

MQ is absolutely FUMING at this point because he knows the only reason he got recognized was because he let XL do his makeup instead of of doing it himself and XL is doing everything in his power not to completely lose his cool and fall to the floor laughing.

800 years later on Mt Yu Jun, Fu Yao is absolutely loving making little comments to XL about how he must have done this before because he's such a natural at it. Nan Feng would eventually start arguing that the crown prince would have never done that with the exception of missions.

What if Hua Cheng hadn't been allowed to jump down from the heavens after ascension?

What if Hua Cheng received a shackle that day that kept him tied to the heavens and unable to speak of either Xie Lian or his murderer?

Summary:

Never straying far from his god, the crown prince's most devoted believer once again sacrifices it all at the hands of a sword and the onslaught of the Human Face Disease. As the ghost of the soldier is dragged into the chaotic slaughter of the kiln, the last thing he expects is to find himself ascending to the heavens from where he had lay in the deepest pits of hell.

Turning his back on the heavens who had rejected his one true god, the boy leapt from the edge of the divine realm.

Only for the collar of his robes to be seized midair by the same hands that killed him.

He smiles down at Hong’er’s tilted head. “You’re right. Anything I say would be too nice, what’s the point?” Xiao He wheezes a laugh around Ed’s foot, and he angles his head to snicker with him. “Okay, now. Language!”

I don't know if you have already said anything about A-Yu's birthday... But if not... When are the birthdays of the WangXian children and of the other couples???

Xiao-Yu's birthday is March 25, the date he was first introduced in TMAAF :)

A-Lan's birthday is September 14, and Wei Chunyang's is May 2. She shares her birthday with Jiang Yanli.

I haven't chosen birthdays for Jiang Cheng's children yet, but here we go: Lang Lihua was eleven months old during the final arc of TMAAF, which takes place from late October to early November (ending on November 6, the day after Jiang Cheng's 39th birthday), so her official birthday is December 5. And Jiang-furen was around two months pregnant when Wei Chunyang was born, so Jiang Lianhua's birthday should fall in late November/early December. We'll say November 28.

Jiang Bohai is five years younger than Chunyang and Lianhua, and he was born in the spring or summer, since Wangxian traveled to Lotus Pier by boat to meet him right away (sometime between May 2 and early September, because Chunyang's birthday had passed by the time he was born). He sounds like a June boy to me, so his birthday is June 19.

Re: the Nielan kids, Jueying's birthday is August 9. Yunhua and Yunhai were born on April 30.
