I am always so feral about "if you don't have a reason for living, then use me as the reason" because xie lian thinks he was arrogant and naive, but... Imagine you're so desperate you want to kill everyone in the world and then yourself. Imagine not having anybody in the world who cares if you live or die. Actually, they'd all much rather you died. And then this kind beautiful person who literally saved your life once already comes to you and says "I do. I care if you live or die. I want you to live. So please, keep on living. If not anyone else, live because I want you to. Live for me."

@here4hualian day 9: kissing an item that belongs to the other

Hong’er didn’t mean to take the earring, really! He only noticed it when he made it to his most recent alley hideout and sat down. It rolled out from where it must have gotten caught on his clothing during the chaos. He stared at it like it was a lifeline, and in many ways, it was. It was proof that it had actually happened. He had actually been saved.

Gently, more gently than he had ever been, more gently than anyone save for two had ever been with him, he picked it up. It was small, so small to be suddenly so important to him, and… it was red.

His entire life, Hong’er had hated the color red. His mother had tried, but Hong’er knew: red was ugly and cursed and demonic. Red was the color that ruined his life, made his father turn on him, kept his family’s love from him. Now, though…

Hong’er had seen a wedding once. He remembered watching the bride parade down the street, dressed in red and looking so happy. He had resented her then. How could she be so happy while drenched in the color that had only ever brought him pain?

He stared at the earring.

Suddenly, overcome with the urge to see, see what his mother saw, see what that bride saw, his unoccupied hand reached up and tore at the bandages across his face. The light stung when it hit the exposed eye, but Hong’er couldn’t care less, focused on scrounging around until he uncovered a piece of metal shiny enough to look at his reflection in.

His ugly eye stared back at him. That red he hated… hated… hated…

He lifted the earring and held it next to his face. This symbol of his savior, it was the same color, the same shape as his eye, and yet he couldn’t hate it.

“Your eye isn’t a curse, my sweet Honghong’er,” his mother used to say. She would kiss him then, right on his eyelid, right on that cursed, ugly eye. “It’s beautiful.” 

“Beautiful,” Hong’er whispered. He lifted the earring and kissed it, aching for something he knew he couldn’t have. “Mama, he caught me. He saved me, and he wore red, and it was beautiful.”

Hong-er focuses on the letter he's writing, tongue sticking out. "Dear gege… I think you're wonderful…"

Minutes pass. Finally, he ends the letter. "Will you go on a date with me? Signed, Hong-er."

The next day, Xie Lian smiles down at the letter in his hands. It has a beautiful flower drawn on it.

"Be careful, Xie Lian! It could be poisoned!" Mu Qing warns.

"Who would want to poison me?" Xie Lian laughs, opening the letter with care. "Everyone loves me."

He and Mu Qing stare at the contents.

"Everyone but one person," Xie Lian amends. This can't be anything but a dreadful curse!

I have more thoughts on the whole "Xie Lian is bad with kids" thing. The only times we see Xie Lian with a kid when he is not in the middle of a crisis, a war, and/or dealing with the worst luck imagineable it is with Hong'er. Every interaction he has with Hong'er is a good interaction too. Like could he have done better? Sure! But he was 17 and not a licensed child psychologist lol. Not to mention all the trusted people in his life were telling him to throw Hong'er to the dogs. In their first interaction after catching Hong'er, Xie Lian comforts him and tells him not to be afraid. Then he doesn't let anyone punish Hong'er for ruining the parade. He asks Hong'er about his parents and only sends him away when Mu Qing says that he has a home. In their next meeting after saving Hong'er from Qi Rong, he makes sure Hong'er gets medical attention and takes Hong'er with him since he didn't have anywhere safe to stay. Plus, at Taicang Mountain Xie Lian reassures Hong'er that it's not his fault that the evil spirits escaped even though his teacher said Hong'er was bad luck. After his accession, he makes sure Hong'er eats and gives him a reason to live.

All this is to say that I don't think Xie Lian is bad with kids when he isn't in impossible situations. He has a lot to learn (especially by modern standards), but he is not inherently bad with them. I don't think he wants any kids of his own anytime soon, but I wouldn't mind post-canon Xie Lian watching my kid with instructions as long as I packed snacks.

Medical visits are the only joy that Hong'er gets in the barracks. He always helps the apothecary, Xie Lian, however he can. Today, he was tasked with gathering medicinal ingredients. Diligent as ever, he found them all, plus the courage to gift Xie Lian a flower.
