Mueller Austin Homes for Sale: A Brief History of Mueller
Mueller Austin homes for sale are exquisite properties in a master-planned, 700-acre urban village in the center of Austin, Texas. The community has set new standards for the contemporary lifestyle and living environment.
Originally developed as the housing for the Robert Mueller Municipal Airport workers, built in 1924, Mueller has quickly grown into a residential, recreational, and commercial mixed-use neighborhood. Through a diverse approach to architecture, accessible comfort, and environmentally successful concepts, Mueller is one of the most attractive areas in Austin.
For most of the period between 1930 and 1999, Austin was served by the Robert Mueller Municipal Airport until the facility was closed with the opening of the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.
Instead of having the land degraded and unused, city planners started seeing more potential in a new community with ordinances that can shape how future cities should be. This produced Mueller – a progressive neighborhood designed with walkability, environment-friendly living, and togetherness in mind.
Diverse Housing Options
Mueller offers what clients require, be it cheap houses, fancy or formal houses, formal houses, or even posh houses, to those with such preferences. From lavish condos with stunning vistas to compact townhouses to large houses, Mueller has it all for you.
Singles are modern structures with large floor areas ideal for homeowners and those who want more space. Some have energy-conservation features and contemporary finishes.
Many townhomes in Mueller have several stories, private parking, and sophisticated finishes, well suited for people looking for homes but without yards. Condominiums vary from large apartments with one or more penthouses to small apartments at retail level or above a shopping complex.
In particular, Mueller provides many complexes for rent to its clients, providing their tenants with swimming pools, exercise rooms, a clubhouse, and the like.
A Walkable, Pedestrian-Friendly Design
Mueller also has the advantage of being heavily walkable due to the access design. Wide pavements, bike lanes, and accessible common facilities encouraged carpooling and walking in the community.
People can walk from one school to another, parks, shops, and restaurants without using a car, making it the most convenient place for people who prefer to lead a sustainable lifestyle.
Amenities and Attractions
Mueller is not only a residence but an experience. Various facilities can be found within the locality that may interest multiple people.
Parks and Green Spaces
Mueller has over 140 acres and is devoted to parks and other open areas so residents can enjoy their time outside. These features include Lake Park, a perfect spot with 30 acres of pleasure, a walking trail, an area for picnicking, and a lake.
They include children's playgrounds, basketball courts, other sports courts, and several shaded areas for the entire family. John Gaines Park has become popular due to community pools and urban gardens.
Retail and Dining
Mueller's retail cores include several shops, restaurants, and services. For clothing, guests can buy trendy fashions at concept shops or larger stores such as Target. In addition to food lovers, drama lovers will enjoy several theatre houses, including the Schimmel, the Shakespeare, and the Liederkranz Theatre.
Cultural and Entertainment Venues
The Mueller neighborhood also boasts of organizing cultural activities and entertainment, such as the Thinkery, an innovative children's museum. The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is an excellent opportunity for cinephiles, as it unites watching movies, eating, and drinking.
Mueller Farmers Market is a weekly market in which citizens are free to produce and purchase fresh food and locally made products, among other things.
Schools and Education
Parents with school-going children will find Mueller a suitable place to live because of its proximity to good schools. There are schools within the independent domain of Austin, also known as Austin Independent School District (AISD), and schools offering private and public education.
Some schools include Maplewood Elementary School, Kealing Middle School, and McCallum High School. Numerous colleges, such as the University of Texas at Austin, are nearby, making the area appropriate for academics and professionals.
Sustainability and Innovation
Mueller can be regarded as the founder of the critical concept of sustainability in urban development. The community includes environment-friendly accessibility, such as designing energy-efficient homes by installing solar panels, high-performance windows, and energy-preserving appliances.
Most buildings have facilities for harvesting and recycling rainwater, and the builders also observe environmentally friendly processes to decrease the ecological impact on the community.
Why Buy a Home in Mueller?
Mueller gives you the best of the city, convenience, and the best of the suburbs, as well as comfort, plus incorporating sustainable features. Located only three miles from downtown, the University is convenient for the city's business, cultural, and entertainment centers.
Due to its vibrant community, there are various related activities, including movies under the stars, sculptures, and community celebrations such as festivals in the park. Mueller is among the most creative neighborhoods in Austin and continues expanding, so investing in real estate makes it possible to note that it has relatively great potential.
Real Estate Market Insights
The Mueller market is relatively saturated with homes, which make relatively fast sales within a short time, and majors sell them.
For example, the prices are distinguished by the kind of property, its size, and the house's location within a few blocks of a particular neighborhood. Potential buyers should be ready to make quick decisions, and it is advisable to seek the services of a real estate agent in the region.
Mueller is more than simply a suburb; it is a concept of the life people would like to see in their town or city.
It is a highly integrated, pedestrian-friendly community where residents can live in various housing units supported by abundant amenities and a sustainable environment. Mueller has you covered if you are a first-time homeowner, a family expanding to need more space, or someone who wants to reduce your space needs.
There is no better time than the present to consider the homes for sale in Mueller and learn why so many are in the neighborhood with so much pride.

I love hiking in Australia. There’s just something about the Australian bush. It’s lack of uniformity, maybe? It’s the maverick of the floral world. And we mustn’t forget that Australia is a very old, geologically and culturally important place. When we hike, we pass through history.
One of Australia’s most popular and acclaimed hiking tracks, The Overland Track, has long been on my to-hike list. A different world, and probably as far from what I am used to hiking in South Australia. But you know what, it seems the closer I get to tick it off my list, the further along it gets moved. Every time I get the urge to head for Tasmania I end up booking a plane ticket to New Zealand.
Disloyalty maybe, but despite having already spent about 15 weeks in total tramping in New Zealand, there is so much more that I want to do and I find myself struggling to head to Tasmania instead.
Both Tasmania and New Zealand do lush forests and colourful mushrooms really well!
Tassie vs New Zealand
Everyone I speak to who has travelled to Tasmania from the mainland to hike The Overland, Three Capes, or South Coast Tracks says one thing: “It’s expensive but fantastic/well worth it/the best thing I ever did!”. No doubt Tasmania differs from New Zealand in its types of spectacularness nor do we need to perform a comparison to work out which one is ‘better’.
From everything I have seen and know about walking in Tasmania suggests that it is awe inspiring. However, I contend that if you want a bang for your buck and a real backcountry experience, hop on a plane and head for The Land Of The Long White Cloud.
Cost to get there
Believe it or not, it’s potentially cheaper to fly to Christchurch from Adelaide, than to Hobart or Launceston. Let me show you.
For the sake of this comparison, the pretend trip will take place from 22 January to 1 February 2017. This is 11 days in total and should be enough time to enjoy The Overland or a multi-day backcountry tramp or two around Arthur’s Pass. It also takes into account the timetable of the Tassielink, a popular public transport option out to Cradle Mountain, the start of The Overland Track.
The cost of a return flight to do The Overland, flying Adelaide to Launceston and Hobart to Adelaide is around $400 at the time of writing*. The cost of a return flight to tramp the South Island of New Zealand, flying Adelaide to Christchurch return is $450.
Both flights arrive late in the day with shuttles out to the tracks the next day, Monday**, getting you to Cradle Mountain by 11:20 am ($155 return from Lake St Claire to Hobart) with Tassielink and to Arthurs Pass by 10 am ($80 return) with Atomic Shuttles.
This is near Mueller Hut, near Mt Cook on the South Island of NZ. No need to pay national park fees to access this part of the world.
Fees for hiking the tracks
To hike The Overland Track there is a $200 Overland Track Fee and a $30 Lake St Claire Ferry.)
There is no cost to access and enjoy New Zealand national parks. The only fee applicable to tramping non-Great Walk tracks is for Backcountry Hut Tickets or a Backcountry Hut Pass. For the sake of this comparison, and even if you were staying in ‘Serviced’ huts every night, you’d pay only $15 per day for 6 days of tramping that’s $90. Along with flights, transport to and from Arthur’s Pass, that’s a total of $620.
*I used Skyscanner to check the prices of flights, and it’s based on a solo traveller and the cheapest economy seat plus checked baggage.
**One thing I noticed in preparing an itinerary to do The Overland is the lack of public transport options to the start of the track (Cradle Mountain) and from the finish (Lake St Claire). There are a number of private shuttle operators that will get you to the track (McDermott’s, Outdoor Tasmania).
Time & Distance
Despite Arthur’s Pass being in a totally different country, you could potentially be taking your first steps on a track in less time than on The Overland. This would be different if you flew into Tasmania early and hired a car. But that would be tricky, as it’s a one-way track – it starts at Cradle Mountain and finishes at Lake St Claire.
The first hut/camping spot on The Overland is Waterfall Valley. If you start hiking as soon as you arrive in Cradle Mountain you’ll get there by around 5-6pm. The first hut on the Harman Pass Route in the Arthur’s Pass National Park, if this is the tramp you choose, is Carrington Hut which you’ll reach by 4-5pm.
So, despite NZ being 3,200km from Adelaide, it’s possibly quicker to start hiking, once the logistics of it all are considered than it would if you only headed 1,200km south-east. Don’t want to do the Harman? There are dozens of other tracks to hike in the region.
Popularity of the Overland Track
The Overland Track, being a ‘Great Walk’ is rigid in its rules. During the peak season, you must book, you must walk in one direction, and only 60 people can depart Cradle Mountain each day. Because of this, the track can be busy, and the campsites at night crowded.
No doubt it’s for good reason that it gets so busy – the scenery and experience is worth it. But this isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. In my experience, the tracks around Arthur’s Pass are much quieter.
The Avalanche Peak Track, directly behind the village, is a popular day hike with dozens if not hundreds of people hiking it on a nice day, but the more remote backcountry tracks really make you feel like you have the place to yourself.
The markers leading up to Avalanche Peak. Leave Adelaide on Sunday morning. You could be standing right here at 2 pm the next day.
Popularity of Avalanche Peak
In 2009, I tramped from the village to Avalanche Peak then down the other side into the Crow River Valley. The track up to the peak was alive with tourists. I saw maybe 30 people all day. But as I descended the peak toward Crow Hut, I didn’t see another soul until I arrived at the surprise of two lovebirds thinking they had the hut to themselves. Sorry, Sarah and Bruno!
They left early, and I didn’t see another person until I got to the Klondyke Corner the next afternoon. From which I hitch-hiked back to the village. (A nice two-dayer to start a month of tramping around the country.)
I must add, with the increasing popularity of the Te Araroa Trail (which takes trampers from the top of the North Island all the way to the bottom of the South Island, some 3000km), many of the previously quiet non-Great Walk tracks have picked up a notch.
So, you will sometimes find a 24-bunker filled to the rafters. A peril of there being no booking system. Managing these numbers is something the Department of Conservation is actively working on.
Comparing them both
Yeah, I realise this piece isn’t exactly comparing apples with apples. The Overland has more in common with a NZ ‘Great Walk’ like the Milford Track than the not-so-popular Harman Pass or Edwards-Hawdon Route. However, the backcountry huts around Arthur’s Pass are quite similar to those on The Overland. As is much of the other trail infrastructure.
Outside of Australia’s ‘Great Walks’ like The Overland, Three Capes, the new Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail, and even the Bibbulmun, hikers infrastructure is light on.
A multi-day hike will usually stitch together many shorter tracks, and often doesn’t venture that far into the backcountry. Or, requires a tent, a pack full of water, and a sense of self-sufficiency.
Rees Saddle on the Rees Dart Track. The trailhead is about an hour out of the adventure capital of New Zealand, Queenstown.
I guess what I am getting at is that I believe New Zealand offers cheaper, more accessible multi-day, genuinely ‘wilderness’ hiking opportunities than most of Australia. And this is what has kept me going back time and time again.
I like huts, I like having access to water so I don’t have to carry a heavy pack. I like to immerse myself in the backcountry with the promise of some basic facilities at the end of each day. And this is why the New Zealand wilderness is so popular I suppose. It’s accessible. More people can do it. The barrier to entry is lower. Just trying to get to The Overland Track is an adventure in itself!
And this is why the New Zealand wilderness is so popular I suppose. It’s accessible. More people can do it. The barrier to entry is lower. Just trying to get to The Overland Track is an adventure in itself!
Have you ever visited New Zealand? How did it compare to hiking on home soil?

Jon Newcomb Visits Austin’s Thinkery Children’s Musem
Part One of ‘Jon Newcomb Austin Reviews’ Series
Parents and kids alike love Austin's hands-on children's museum where science, innovation, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) exhibits get families finding out and chuckling. Thinkery is Austin's version of a children's museum. The environment itself challenges your mind (and some may call it a bit too crowded at times). Jon Newcomb visit Thinkery all the time and has quite a bit to review about it.
Thinkery is an effective method for kids to establish analytical skills, crucial thinking, and curiosity about the world around them. The exhibitions and programs motivate children-- along with their caregivers-- to fix imaginative obstacles, check out a range of products, and to establish brand-new ways to complete unknown jobs. Through these activities, children get the tools and confidence to grow and establish into enthusiastic, innovative, long-lasting STEAM learners and thinkers.
The Many Benefits of Thinkery
Children find out through play-- whether it's a child-led expedition of the connections between water and sound in Currents; together with an adult directing your own Stop Motion Animation Station motion picture in Innovators' Workshop, an exploration of experiences in Kitchen Lab; experimentation with motion in a Move Studio barrier course; diving into fictional worlds during Storytime; or checking out an idea with new products making your own cardboard production in a Spark Shop making activity. Play helps develop the ability to envision, perceive, factor, and issue solve while developing a foundation for a life time of learning.
Build Knowledge
Kids start to establish an understanding of STEAM concepts as infants. To support this, Thinkery offers enjoyable, engaging, high-quality STEAM experiences that cut across disciplines and set the phase for how they approach learning into adulthood. Thinkery kids check out cause and effect with electrical power and switches throughout a Scribble Bot Birthday Party, have fun with patterns manipulating colors in Light Lab, test structure and function developing a catapult in Camp, and examine the size and function of tiny structures at Micro Eye.
While all kids are born with an innate sense of interest about the world around them, they require grownups to cultivate, guide and enhance their interests in STEAM. By offering chances for caregivers and moms and dads to share in a cheerful, positive STEAM finding out experiences and to see themselves as crucial parts of their kid's early learning, it sets children up for future success.
Cultivate Curiosity
Nurturing clinical thinking is necessary for developing curious, bold and innovative long-lasting STEAM students and thinkers. Thinkery utilizes the process of query to promote clinical thinking. We "hand the reins" to kids and adults to explore what they discover curious-- which leads to asking concerns, making discoveries, and screening those discoveries in the search for brand-new understanding.
Promote Positive Adult-Child Relationships
Thinkery supports grownups in the vital work of parenting and caregiving. Adult engagement within a free-choice learning environment is multi-faceted and necessarily varied. Thinkery supplies multiple entry points for adult engagement, incorporating opportunities for grown-ups to observe - a child to produce a work of art at Paint Wall, help with-- an enhancement on a co-designed bridge at Build Landscape, and collaborate with-- creating a temporal "household portrait" in Frozen Shadows.
History of Thinkery
Austin Children's Museum was founded in 1983 by a grassroots group of teachers and parents who wanted regional kids to have more cultural and educational chances. At that time, it was a "museum without walls"-- the founder drove tabletop exhibitions around town in her station wagon and provided activities and programs in schools, parks, libraries and, yes, even shopping malls.
In 1987, they settled into their first brick-and-mortar home-- a 5,000-square-foot building on W. 5th St. For the next 10 years, they presented exhibitions, experiences and curricula for local kids and households. Throughout this time, they established exhibits that traveled to other kids's museums around the country, acquiring rather a track record.
By the mid-1990s, Austin was flourishing, and they had outgrown their home. Fortunately, the community acknowledged the significance of the organization and supported an expansion project. The outcome was the 1997 relocate to downtown Austin's warehouse district. Transferring to the 2nd St. center through a 10-year, rent-free lease was a huge action for Austin Children's Museum, however they understood when they opened the doors that Austin was growing and we 'd eventually need to expand.
In December 2013, Austin Children's Museum became Thinkery and opened at its brand-new location-- a 40,000-square-foot facility in the Mueller neighborhood. Thinkery delivers its mission through a variety of displays and programs that concentrate on science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM). Museum activities focus on academic experiences led by personnel, so each visit is various from the last!
My Review
Today I'm excited to tell you all about our current see to Thinkery. Tess likes going to the interactive museum and I love enjoying her expand her mind in numerous ways. Whether it's through art, building with logs, designing airplanes, or pretending to run a farm-to-table dining establishment.
Area
Thinkery is located in the Mueller location, which is simply east of I-35 near Dell Children's Hospital. The entrance to Thinkery is a few steps away from Mueller Lake Park's Playground.
If you're headed there on a weekend early morning or weekday early morning after traffic wanes, you can arrive in about 25 minutes from the Four Points area. With traffic, however, it could be closer to 45 minutes.
Parking
Thinkery visitors can have up to 3 hours of parking validated in the McBee Street District Garage which is ideal across the street from (but behind) Thinkery With children in tow it can take about 5 minutes to obtain from your car, however, so strategy accordingly.
Exploring Thinkery.
Immediately kids love climbing up all over the lock ness beast at the entrance. Lake Mueller Park Playground will interest kids of any ages. It can get crowded!
When you first walk into Thinkery, you'll immediately find a huge train table, an electronic camera for taking silly images (which then get blown up on the wall-- the kids like to see themselves up there), and a giant block table.
Ongoing Exhibits
The Thinkery routinely updates their permanent displays and each is created for hands-on learning. Here are some favorites that kids will love to explore:
Currents
Currents functions hands-on water activity stations for households to explore fluid dynamics and discover the connections between water and sound. The museum offers smocks and hand dryers however load a modification of clothes or a towel in case you are worried about your kid getting too wet!
It can get crowded, however it's extremely nice that there is a confined "baby" space in the middle for parents with both older and more youthful kids. Genius! So moms and dads can wait their infant however watch on and engage with their older kid( ren) at the very same time.
Trigger Shop
Next we headed to the Spark Shop where kids can find out all about aerodynamics. You can also design your own gliders and launch them in the air in this space.
Light Lab
Light Lab allows families to investigate the impact of color, light and shadows. Visitors can draw with light, freeze shadows, and build light structures utilizing mini and magnets blocks with LEDs. On this wall, you could push on the various pressure zones to get it to alter a variety of colors.
Our Backyard
Our Backyard is an amazing outside play area that welcomes museum goers to scale the heights of an accessible, custom-made climber, or rest under the branches of our native elm tree. This is Thinkery's outdoor play area. There you will discover a separate water play area, a huge playscape (tailored towards older kids), a location where kids can construct with foam noodles, and more.
Let's Grow
Upstairs you'll discover the Let's Grow Exhibit which includes a farmer's market, a play space for more youthful kids (0-3), a reading nook, and more. Kids LOVE the farmer's market.
Repeating Events
Every Wednesday, the museum remains open late for Community Nights from 4-- 8 p.m., admission is by donation. There is likewise a Bilingual Storytime on Wednesdays beginning at 6 p.m.
For households with children ages 4 and up, Think Lab allows for expedition of intricate procedures and usage of real scientific tools. Inspect their website for the schedule.
Toddlers take control of the museum during Baby Bloomers, when the museum is open just for visitors ages 0-- 3 years and their households. Held Mondays (9 a.m.-- noon) and Saturdays (9-- 10 a.m.), the program is produced for the earliest students. Saturday Baby Bloomers activities are restricted to the second level of the museum, so other ages can still access other locations of the museum during the event.
Every Winter, The Thinkery uses Gingerbread Workshops where families utilize fresh gingerbread and sweet treats to construct gingerbread houses. Make your appointments in advance.
Plan Your Trip to Thinkery Today!
Okay, so if you can't tell, we enjoy Thinkery. My review didn't even cover half of whatever they provide. I want I could but there are still areas of the museum we have not hung out in, and as the kids age I'm sure we'll start to find even more.
Admission
General admission to Thinkery is $10 for anybody 2 years old and up. Thinkery provides wonderful subscription bundles for households and I completely suggest getting one. Although we can't make it to Thinkery as typically as we 'd like, we probably happen as soon as every two months and it's nice to not need to pay anything each time! Plus, members have numerous other advantages, consisting of early gain access to on a couple Sundays every month and a discount rate at the present shop.

Camping in New Zealand
Whether you rent a caravan or grab your tent and find a beautiful space near the beach - New Zealand is the camping capital of the world where it is allowed to set up your camping equipment freely or visit one of the official camping sites. New Zealand will offer you many camping opportunities during your travel, this activity is not only loved by tourists who love the outdoors and saving money, but it is also a hobby to many locals as well. Sitting around a campfire, barbequing as well as stargazing is probably one of the greatest perks camping has to offer.
Places to camp in New Zealand
You will be able to find stunning camping grounds wherever you go, no matter if you choose the North or the South Island. If you have chosen to start with the North Island head to Gisborne where you will be able to freedom camp in one of the beautiful beaches, nothing can be better than falling asleep under the stars and waking up with a refreshing swim in the ocean. We recommend free camping in Hot Water Beach which is known for the natural hot springs. Alternatively, you can choose to set up your caravan or a tent in one of the official camping grounds which will provide you with lavatories. We also recommend – The Magical Spirits Bay Campsite, seaside town of Mount Maunganui and Kuaotunu beach in Coromandel. If the South Island is your choice, visit Lake Pukaki Reserve, it has official camping grounds with running water and lavatories. You can either enjoy a day at the beach or go for one of the hiking trails nearby. Don’t miss an opportunity to stay at the Mueller hut at the Mount Cook National Park. The famous red hut gets fully booked fast, even though you have to do some serious exercise to get there. The hike to the Mueller Hut is 5.6 km long and it starts with a 2000 step staircase which will lead you to the main trail.
Where I can freedom camp in New Zealand
Freedom camping in New Zealand allows you to park or set up your tent almost anywhere, although in recent years the rules of freedom camping have become slightly stricter. Although freedom camping gives you free parking and camping possibilities it has limited or no access to running water or lavatories. We recommend the Wairau diversion reserve it offers lavatory although no running water. Bear in mind that this site will not allow tents and it can only be accessed by a caravan. Another amazing finding is Gillespies Beach on South Island. You can either go park your caravan or set up your tent right next to the beach. If you wish to experience some peace and quiet and run away from the city, drive down to the Abel Tasman National Park where you will find the Totaranui Beach. This secluded area has no bars or restaurants, even though it is hard to access it will truly be worth it once you get there. Drive to the Okains Bay where you can freedom camp as well as use the services of the nearby camping sites which offer clean drinking water, showers, and lavatories. This location is close to the city as well as many hiking routes.
Freedom camping penalties
During recent years New Zealand government has implemented new rules for Freedom camping. There are over 500 freedom camping location around New Zealand and most of them have the same simple rules to follow: -Don’t leave any waste behind you and make sure that the camping grounds are left clean; -use the specially designated lavatories as well as waste disposal stations; -although free camping allows you to park and set up freely, some areas can be prohibited, make sure to do research before heading to the designated camping area; Those who do not camp responsibly or damage the environment can receive some serious penalties from $200-5000 or even up to $10,000 fines for major damage to the environment. -You are allowed to freedom camp in-cars, vans, caravans, campervans, RVs, motorhomes as well as mobile homes. -You are not allowed to camp on private land, leave or dispose of rubbish or any other waste in non-designated areas. You will be given 28 days to pay your fine if you miss the deadline it may result in court or additional penalties.
How safe is camping in New Zealand?
New Zealand is one of the safest countries in the world with low crime rates, no dangerous animals, as well as positive social acceptance. It is a great travel destination and a place to settle down. Although New Zealand is ranked to be one of the safest countries in the world we still recommend some basic safety precautions while traveling and camping. Make sure to keep your personal valuables close, take care of the environment and your personal safety. We recommend camping on official camping sites which will not only provide clean drinking water, electricity and many other essential services it will also allow you to be surrounded by other campers. However, if you choose to freedom camp there is a slightly higher chance of a vehicle or personal items theft if you leave it unattended. Personal safety, as well as the safety of the environment, has to be considered while camping. Simple mistakes as leaving an unattended campfire or a cigarette can lead to a devastating forest fire which can result in loss of endangered animal species as well as protected flora. Before you head out to your next camping adventure make sure to educate yourself on general rules of camping in New Zealand, to keep yourself as well as the beautiful nature of New Zealand safe.
10 of the most iconic backcountry huts on the South Island
There are a lot of things to love about New Zealand.
The endless soundtrack of birdsong playing from sunrise to sundown. The plethora of terrain and ecosystems densely compacted into a relatively tiny block of land. The turquoise blue braided river beds, the cascading waterfalls at every turn, the pods of dolphins greeting you while you swim in the sea. The fact that people routinely walk through cafes and supermarkets barefoot (seriously this happens and is amazing and borderline concerning).
But perhaps the thing that makes New Zealand stand out from every other country in the world is its unparalleled system of well-maintained huts which has offered shelter and refuge to generations of trampers (kiwi for hikers), mountaineers, scientists, hunters and all other walks of life who move through the mountains and backcountry.
5 Things to Know before Hiking in New Zealand
If hut bagging is on your New Zealand bucket list, be sure to check out these amazing backcountry huts.
Bask in their glory and treat them with kindness and please, for the love of god, pay your DOC fees. These huts are not free and supporting the Department of Conservation means ensuring decades more of hut maintenance and upkeep.
Here are 1o of New Zealand’s most iconic backcountry huts on the South Island. Enjoy!
1. Mueller Hut
Mt. Cook National Park: 5.2 kilometers and 3-4 hours one way, 1800 meters, 28 bunks, advanced fitness, moderate tramping skills required. More info here.
It’s impossible to have a list of breathtaking high alpine huts without mentioning Mueller Hut.
This iconic red hut can be found in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park and with a well worn and accessible track, this hut can be reached by almost any determined visitor ready for a 3-4 hour steep jaunt. After tackling a few thousand built-in steps, the route sends you up a mild scree field before walking the ridge to the hut.
This is undoubtedly one of the more popular huts in the area so bookings are required from November-May.
Mueller Hut – New Zealand’s Sexiest Hike
If you still have some energy in the legs after reaching the hut, it’s worth a scramble up to the summit of Mt. Ollivier (1933 meters), notable for being the very first peak summited by climbing legend Edmund Hilary as a young mountaineer in 1939.
You know, New Zealand’s greatest son and the first person to conquer Everest?
Both the mountain and the hut give you exceptional views of Mt. Cook on a clear day. A century of climbing history paired with some epic views? Yes, please.
2. Liverpool Hut
Mt. Aspiring National Park 15 kilometers and 6-7 hours one way, 10 bunks, advanced track. More info here.
Living in Wanaka affords us the pleasure of having the Mt. Aspiring National Park practically in our own backyard. Home to New Zealand’s second highest mountain, Mt. Aspiring, this national park provides endless valleys and peaks to explore for local adventure seekers and curious travelers alike.
Liverpool Hut is a challenging walk not to be taken lightly.
Similar to the Brewster track, the climb up through the bush is steep and requires hand over hand climbing up a path of tree roots. Unlike Brewster hut, you get a 3-4 hour warm up before this climb with a flat and hot valley walk.
Fear not, your efforts will be rewarded with gobsmacking views of Mt. Aspiring, Mt. French, and Rob Roy Peak from the hut’s veranda.
3. Brewster Hut
Mt. Aspiring National Park: 5 kilometers and 6-8 hours return, 12 bunks, advanced track. More info here.
Continuing the theme of bright red huts perched on precarious ledges, may I introduce another Southern Alps classic: Brewster Hut. Read my personal account here.
Located just before Haast Pass past Makarora on the other side of Mt. Aspiring National Park, Brewster Hut sits about a kilometer vertically above the highway below. After a quick river crossing to start the hike, the track steeply winds its way up through the bush. After a few hours, you will reach bush line where you’ll be greeted by perhaps one of the most pleasant 300-meter ridge lines walks in the area.
This is another hut quickly gaining popularity and as of December 2017, bookings will be required online to secure a bunk in the hut.
If you’re after a summit, follow the cairns up to Mt. Armstrong to catch the sunset or sunrise. You’ll be rewarded with 360-degree views of the alps and a stunning shot of Mt. Brewster looming to the North East.
4. Welcome Flat Hut
Westland Tai Poutini National Park: 18 kilometers and 7 hours one way, 31 bunks, intermediate track. More info here.
Visitors of the North Island who venture south might be a little disappointed with the relatively few natural hot springs available to trampers.
However, one of the more popular hot springs in the South Island sits alongside the Welcome Flat Hut on the West Coast. The hike in is not difficult but is long and follows a canopy forest and a braided riverbed which can make for slippery footing during the colder months. After a long day on your feet, you will arrive at the hut and are free to immediately jump in the pools for a well-deserved soak.
This is a popular hike and a busy hut and bookings are required. For the best experience, do this hike in the late autumn or early spring. The weather will be just cool enough to really enjoy the temperature of the hot pools and the sandflies are not nearly as hungry when the temperatures drop!
5. Luxmore Hut
Fiordland National Park: 1085 meters, 13.8 kilometers 5-6.5 one way, 54 bunks, easy track. More info here.
Luxmore Hut sits on the Kepler Track which has been deemed one of the official Great Walks of New Zealand and is also a 60km loop track. While the hut itself isn’t particularly stunning or unique, this hut easily makes the list for the high alpine views overlooking Lake Te Anau, especially with a beautiful veranda.
Why Fiordland is an adventurer’s playground
The track to the hut is well worn and maintained and takes 5-7 hours to complete. Trampers start with a gentle walk through the forest before a steeper climb to the top of the bush. From there, the hut waits just a kilometer ahead.
As part of the Great Walk huts, trampers visiting from October – April enjoy a big hut with running water, flushing toilets, solar lighting and gas stoves but has to be booked.
If you’re a runner and ambitious you can even compete in the annual Kepler Challenge and run the track in a day.
6. Siberia Hut
Mt. Aspiring National Park: 26 kilometers and 7-8 hours one way, 20 bunks, track varies depending on routes. More info here.
Siberia Hut is one of the more popular huts in Mount Aspiring National Park and for good reason. The relatively easy hike in offers up majestic valley views and access to Crucible Lake, a hanging lake perched at the bottom of a bowl of jagged peaks. If you catch the lake at the right time of the year, you might even see the floating icebergs!
Siberia Hut sits on the Wilkins / Young circuit on the Gillespie Pass, a 58km loop near Makarora. If coming from the Wilkin Valley, most visitors will opt to jet boat up the river and finish with a 2-3 hour hike to the hut. Trampers from the other direction will be coming from Young Hut and will face a big climb over Gillespie Pass before descending into the valley to the hut.
The relatively new hut was built after the old hut burned down in 2011 due to a faulty fridge in the warden’s quarters of the hut. The entire building caught fire and burned the hut to the ground within an hour. Luckily, the hut was quickly rebuilt do trampers could continue to enjoy this awe-inspiring valley.
A side trip to Lake Crucible is well worth the effort, and there are different ways to combine a trip out to this hut and valley for all experiences level. You can even fly in on a day trip on the Siberia Experience.
7. Dumpling Hut
Fiordland National Park: 18 kilometers 5.5 – 6 hours one way to Sandfly Point, 40 bunks, easy/moderate track. More info here.
The Milford Track is one of the most popular hikes in the country, and for good reason.
Dubbed as the greatest of New Zealand’s Great Walks, this 4-day hike requires bookings and is often booked out a year in advance (though often there are last minute cancelations). Trampers are required to stay at each hut which might not be ideal for those wanting to fly through the track quickly but is actually a great way to force trampers to take their time and enjoy the rare beauty for Fiordland.
My journey on the Milford Track in 30 photos
This means that if you want to stay in Dumpling Hut during the main season, you pretty much need to walk the whole track (4 days) and this is the 3rd night of the trip.
This hut is reached via the Mackinnon Pass, the highest point on the Milford Track so trampers are guaranteed to be rewarded with some of the best views of Fiordland…unless it’s raining, which happens a lot.
Milford Sound gets roughly 7 meters of rain annually so if you are lucky enough to do this track, don’t forget your rain gear!
8. French Ridge Hut
Mt. Aspiring National Park: 16.2 kilometers and 6 – 7.5 hours one way, 20 bunks, advanced/expert track. More info here.
It’s a tough call and very competitive but I’m going to make the bold call and say the French Ridge Hut might take the cake for the best view from a long drop toilet.
This bright red hut and its matching toilet bask beneath the massive mountain range leading up to Mt. Aspiring. Visitors of this hut will find the track eerily similar to the Liverpool track. A long, flat walk through the valley before a steep, full body climb to the hut, all hands. French Ridge sits a bit higher in elevation than Liverpool Hut and a serves as a resting point for many mountaineers on their way to climb the mighty Mount Aspiring.
With 20 bunks, this popular New Zealand Alpine Club Hut offers spectacular views of Mt. French and the Bonar Glacier and is often frequented by the ever mischievous keas – don’t leave anything outside or it’s gone.
If you’re up for a challenge full few days of hiking, this hut can’t be missed.
9. Anchorage Hut
Abel Tasman National Park: 12.4 kilometers and 4 hours one way, 34 bunks, easy track. More info here.
New Zealand’s high alpine huts get a lot of attention for their dramatic views but the hut system also includes hundreds of unique huts tucked away in the native New Zealand bush or hugging the sunny coastlines.
Anchorage Hut, located in the Abel Tasman Coast Track, another NZ Great Walk that’s 60 kilometers and 3-4 days, is one not to be missed for beach lovers and sunshine soakers. There’s many different ways to reach this hut and explore the Abel Tasman, and it’s often the most fun to combine them all, hiking, kayaking and a boat ride.
With safe swimming, easy walking tracks and glowworm caves nearby, this large and easy to access hut will do well by those who prefer a milder hike and lots of beaches.
As a bonus, this hut can be reached foot, boat or kayak. If you’re lucky you might just get some dolphin companions to escort you to the hut!
10. Lake Mackenzie Hut
Fiordland National Park: 12 kilometers and 4-6 hours one way from the Divide, Milford Road, 50 bunks, easy/moderate track. More info here.
The Lake Mackenzie Hut is found on another one of New Zealand’s Great Walk tracks, The Routeburn, a 23 kilometer, 2-3 day track.
Found in the Lord of the Rings mecca near Glenorchy, this track promises amazing views at every turn. This hike offers trampers a two for one national park deal starting in the Mt. Aspiring National Park and crossing over into Fiordland National Park, or vice versa.
Hiking New Zealand’s famous Routeburn Track
The hike starts slowly through the forest before making it’s way up to the Routeburn Falls Hut. The falls are stunning on their own but trampers will soon learn the best views are yet to come. The track continues to climb before reaching the Harris Saddle, the highest point on the track at 1,255 meters.
Trampers enjoy a nice relatively flat walk across the mountains before being rewarded with a birdseye view of the turquoise Lake Mackenzie and it’s matching hut. A steep and quick descent will put you on the veranda of the hut where you’re free to enjoy a cup of tea or take a swim in the lake.
The track can be walked in both directions and you can also walk to the Lake Mackenzie Hut from the Milford Road.
Do you have backcountry huts where you live? Have you ever stayed in one or one of these iconic huts in New Zealand? What’s your favorite? Share!

How Rent To Own Real Estate Works
Also known as a lease option, rent to buy homes are a type of owner financing tor real estate properties.
While the terms of the agreements can vary from house to house, the typical scenario is one in which the owner is looking to sell the property but is willing to accept payment over a period of time, rather than an up front settlement.
In this case, the buyer and seller both agree on the selling price of the home, and the terms of the purchase agreement, specifying things such as payment terms, interest, and length of the agreement.
Usually, owner-financed properties are paid off much sooner than a traditional bank mortgage, but by allowing the renter time to accrue equity in the house, the renter can often roll over that equity into a traditional mortgage after 1-3 years, if the need arises.
Every month the renter/buyer makes a payment to the seller. Typically, part of this payment is credited as rent, while a second part is credited towards the interest on the loan and/or equity in the home. Over time, the renter can then buy out the seller, even if the renter didn’t originally have a large downpayment or the credit needed to qualify for a traditional mortgage.

Many rent to own listings are never uploaded to national or local databases, since it is common for sellers to work independently and not go through a real estate agent for these transactions. It is also common for sellers of owner financed, rent to buy properties to sell their homes casually, meaning that they are interested in selling, but are in no hurry to do so, meaning the listings are not widely publicized.
