Several weeks ago we had the distinct pleasure of touring the new, sleek tower dotting the Dallas skyline. Bleu Ciel, aptly named for its dazzling presence, is the latest condominium tower from esteemed developer Harwood International. Once our car had been parked by a member of the valet team, Harwood Living Sales Director, Allison Hayden, met us with a welcoming smile in the truly impressive lobby. Passionate about the project and extremely knowledgeable, Allison was the perfect person to lead us through a fun and informative tour. She kicked off the hour by explaining that renowned Paris-based architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte and Harwood’s CEO and Founder, Gabriel Barbier-Mueller, drew inspiration from Barbier-Mueller’s collection of samurai objects, one of the largest and most complete in the world. Two samurai warriors decked out in full battle regalia greet residents as they enter the building.

Our time spent at Bleu Ciel exceeded all expectations. The 33-story tower is simply STUNNING. The Condé Nast inspired spa, fully outfitted gym, 24/7 concierge service and dog park are just a few examples from the long list of luxe amenities. Our personal favorite? A tie between the ridiculously gorgeous resort-style pools and the 10,000 bottle wine cellar and tasting room (with a hidden speakeasy-style door to boot). We can’t fail to mention the location! Nestled in the heart of the Harwood District, residents have more than 100 restaurants, entertainment venues and museums within walking distance. If you don’t feel like walking, the adorable Bleu Ciel shuttle can take you wherever you need to go within the District.

The spa features both sauna and steam rooms, beautiful plunge pool and a massage room.

The fully outfitted gym boasts breathtaking views of the pool and Dallas skyline, as well as a private studio for yoga, Pilates or personal training.

The 10,000 bottle wine cellar, which is also available for private events.

New story in Politics from Time: Roger Stone Leaves the First Day of His Trial Early Over Alleged Food Poisoning

WASHINGTON — The trial of Roger Stone, the flamboyant former confidant of President Donald Trump, kicked off Tuesday amid a host of medical issues involving both the defendant and a spectator.

Shortly after jury selection began, the courtroom had to be cleared for more than a half hour when a man sitting in the back row moaned loudly and collapsed on the floor. He was revived and helped from the room by medical staff. Not long after the session resumed, Stone himself went home early, telling U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson that he had food poisoning.

Stone, a longtime Republican provocateur, faces charges related to allegations he sought to collaborate with WikiLeaks to release emails hacked by Russia to damage Hillary Clinton’s Democratic presidential campaign.

The trial in Washington promises to revive the specter of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation as the impeachment inquiry against Trump proceeds in the House. Stone’s indictment in January stems directly from Mueller’s investigation. He is accused of lying to lawmakers about WikiLeaks, tampering with witnesses and obstructing a House Intelligence Committee probe into whether the Trump campaign coordinated with Russia to tip the 2016 election.

Stone, whose history in Republican political circles dates back to the Nixon administration, has consistently criticized the case against him as politically motivated. Day One was focused on jury selection and featured some of the political complexities that may dominate the case.

Jackson started the day by fending off attempts by the defense team to exclude any potential jurors who worked in the U.S. government or had a negative view of Trump. Berman pointed out that excluding all government workers may be impossible given the nature of the District of Columbia jury pool.

Sure enough, the first potential juror was a woman who had worked in the Office of Management and Budget in the Obama White House and whose husband is a lawyer in the Department of Justice.

Jackson also rejected the notion that a juror who was opposed to Trump would not be fair to Stone.

“That doesn’t mean the juror is biased against THIS defendant on THESE charges,” Jackson told defense attorneys. “The defense has assumed bias that has not been shown on the part of those people.”

Stone, a longtime friend of the president’s, briefly served on Trump’s campaign but was pushed out amid infighting with campaign manager Corey Lewandowski. Though sidelined, he continued to communicate with Trump and stayed plugged into his circle of advisers.

The indictment says Stone, who was arrested by the FBI in a raid at his Florida home, repeatedly discussed WikiLeaks in 2016 with campaign associates and lays out in detail Stone’s conversations about emails stolen from Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta and posted in the weeks before Trump beat Clinton.

After WikiLeaks released hacked emails from the Democratic National Committee on July 22, 2016, the indictment says, a senior Trump campaign official “was directed” to contact Stone about additional releases and about “what other damaging information” WikiLeaks had “regarding the Clinton campaign.” The indictment does not name the official or say who directed the outreach to Stone.

Stone is also accused of threatening New York radio host Randy Credico in an effort to prevent Credico from contradicting Stone’s testimony before the House Intelligence Committee.

Former Running Back DeMarco Murray Lists His Nashville-Area Home for $3.3M

Former Tennessee Titans running back DeMarco Murray has punted on his Franklin, TN, home, putting it on the market for $3.29 million.

The 30-year-old announced his retirement earlier this year, three months after being released by the Titans. The All-Pro is now ready to release his luxurious Nashville-area mansion, which he bought in 2016 (when he joined the Titans) for $2.95 million.

The traditional manse is worthy of a touchdown dance. After Murray and his wife, Heidi Mueller, purchased the place, they brought in the pros.

“DeMarco and Heidi solicited the help of talented interior designer Erica Hartlein to help them create their perfect Nashville dream home,” says listing agent Paula Hinegardner.

The result? A “casually elegant, French manor-style residence that’s perfect for both celebrity entertaining and the everyday, crazy life of a young family,” she adds, noting the couple lived in the home with their two children and two dogs.

The estate boasts “casual elegance with gracious spaces, luxurious interior design and state-of-the-art home technology,” the listing notes. It’s located in a gated community that has been home to celebrities including musician Alan Jackson and former MLB pitcher Kevin Jarvis.

The 9,600-square-foot home on an acre lot has six bedrooms, seven bathrooms, three half-baths, and an elevator. The two-story home features an open-concept living and dining area, formal dining room, grand entry, game room, and home theater. The master wing comes with a private office, coffee bar, and spa bath. Other amenities include a four-car garage and a dog run.

Hinegardner calls the “amazing private outdoor living space” a standout. It features a spacious living room, pool, spa, and deck, as well as a cabana with a full kitchen and shower.

The Las Vegas native starred in college with the Oklahoma Sooners. He began his NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys in 2011, and also played with the Philadelphia Eagles before landing with the Titans.

“It’s been a long time thinking, the last year or two, and physically, mentally, and emotionally, I think it’s time for me to hang it up,” Murray said of his retirement, according to ESPN.

The Ringer noted running backs have particularly short-lived NFL careers due to the physical demands of the position. Murray retired just three years after he was named AP’s Offensive Player of the Year. He has since joined Fox as a college football analyst.

Housing Developments in Newark, Boston and Austin Selected as Winners of The Urban Land Institute’s 2017 Jack Kemp Excellence in Affordable and Workforce Housing Award

WASHINGTON — Newark’s Hahne & Co. Building, Boston’s Mosaic on the Riverway, and Austin’s Wildflower Terrace have been selected by the Urban Land Institute (ULI) Terwilliger Center for Housing as the winners of the 2017 Jack Kemp Excellence in Affordable and Workforce Housing Award.

The annual award, which honors developments that ensure housing affordability for people in a broad range of incomes, is provided to developments in which all or a portion of the units are affordable to households earning up to 120 percent of the area median income (AMI).

The three winning projects, which were chosen by a jury of national housing industry leaders, are being recognized today during the Terwilliger Center’s Housing Opportunity Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana. Finalists were A-Mill Artist Lofts in Minneapolis, Minnesota; Casitas de Colores in Albuquerque, New Mexico; Perris Station Senior Apartment Homes in Perris, California; and Veo in Carson, California.

In 2015, public and private partners crafted a plan to transform the vacant former Hahne & Co. department store into a thriving, modern residential and retail community in Newark, NJ. A public-private partnership, spearheaded by L+M Development Partners and Prudential Financial, Inc., led to the rehabilitation of the 400,000 square-foot building and construction of a 120,000-square foot, nine-story addition. This redevelopment has played a central role in the economic revitalization of downtown Newark. The now completed mixed-use development offers new housing, retail, jobs and educational opportunities near transit. It includes160 units with 64 units affordable to those earning less than 60 percent of AMI.

Mosaic on the Riverway offers a mixed-income and mixed-tenure development near jobs and addresses a childcare shortage through a 9,000-square foot early childhood education center located on the ground floor. This project embodies the spirit of Boston’s mayor Marty Walsh’s policy to build for all of Boston: from formerly homeless families, to first time homebuyers, to doctors looking for a condominium close to work, Mosaic provides housing for all types of Boston residents. The project, which has earned a LEED Silver certification, includes 145 units with 60 units affordable to those earning less than 60 percent of AMI; and 43 condos for those earning 60-120 percent of AMI.

Wildflower Terrace, a mixed-income apartment community for ages 55-plus, is located within the 700-acre Mueller Redevelopment community in Austin, Texas. The LEED Silver, amenity-filled development includes a community activity room with a covered terrace, movie theater, fitness center, art studio, library, laundry facilities, business center, game room, billiards room, and an outdoor courtyard with access to greenways and trails, swimming pools, parks, shopping and convenient public transportation. It includes 201 units with 171 units affordable to those earning less than 60 percent of AMI; 3 units for those earning 60-120 percent of AMI; and 27 market-rate units.

“This year’s winners honor the spirit of Jack Kemp and reflect his signature qualities of compassion for others, pragmatic efficiency, and entrepreneurial spirit in meeting the housing needs of all America’s citizens,” said Jury Chairman J. Ronald Terwilliger, chairman of the ULI Terwilliger Center for Housing and a former ULI chairman.

ULI established the Jack Kemp Excellence in Affordable and Workforce Housing Award in 2008, naming the award in memory of Jack Kemp, former secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and ULI Terwilliger Center national advisory board member. The award is given annually to affordable and workforce housing developments that represent outstanding achievements in several areas, including affordability, innovative financing and building technologies, proximity to employment centers and transportation hubs, quality of design, involvement of public/private partnerships, and replicability of the development, among other criteria.

One of the goals in establishing the ULI Kemp Award program was to show the critical role that housing plays in achieving economic prosperity and a high quality of life, both for individuals and communities, Terwilliger said. “If a family is constantly worried about housing, then being healthy, getting educated, and staying employed is never much of an option. A family with a stable housing situation is a family with a chance. Housing is the foundation from which everything else takes root.”

“Mixed-income housing is a good business and good for communities,” added Stockton Williams, ULI executive vice president for content and executive director of the ULI Terwilliger Center for Housing. “These award-winning developments reflect the innovation and leadership that have characterized the ULI Kemp Award since its inception.”

The winners were selected according to each project’s ability to meet affordable and workforce housing needs in their communities. In addition to Terwilliger, the 2017 Jack Kemp Award jury members were Victoria Davis, president, Urban Atlantic; Hal Ferris, principal, Spectrum Development; Gadi Kaufmann, managing director and chief executive officer, RCLCO; Alazne Solis, president and chief executive officer, Make Room USA; and Margaret Wylde, chief executive officer, Pro Matura Group.

For once, Roger Stone is letting others do the talking.

The political provocateur has spent decades verbally sparring with almost anyone who is willing to engage. But as his trial over lying to Congress and tampering with a witness nears its end, Stone has left his defense in the hands of external factors: lawyers, God, the race card, a coterie of MAGA-world figures and, if all else fails, President Donald Trump.

Given the chance to tell his side of the story, Stone chose not to take the witness stand. Given the opportunity to call witnesses, his attorneys opted instead to simply play portions of the congressional testimony in question.

As a legal strategy, it caught many by surprise, even if Stone’s defenders have done their part in court since the trial started to poke as many holes as they can in the government’s case.

As a political play, though, it might be perfectly tailored for a very different audience — MAGA-ites and the president himself. After all, a conviction on any of the seven counts opens Stone up to prison time and raises the question of whether Trump would face pressure to issue an election-year pardon to his longtime friend, who has a passionate following in Trump land.

“If you hesitate about your conclusions in this matter then you have a reasonable doubt,” Bruce Rogow, the lead Stone defense attorney, told the jury during his closing arguments Wednesday. “My job is to create for you the reasons why you should have a reasonable doubt.”

On Thursday, Stone’s six-day trial will shift to jury deliberations and a verdict soon thereafter, the final coda to months of legal wrangling that kicked off in January with a dramatic early-morning raid to arrest Stone at his South Florida home.

As the case moved toward a trial, Stone and his family have been appealing to a higher power.

They were at Sunday morning Mass about 10 days before his trial: “please pray for us,” his wife, Nydia Stone,wroteon Instagram alongside a prayer emoji, the hashtags #trump and #maga and a tag for the president’s Twitter handle.

And before opening arguments last Tuesday, Stone’s wife and daughter sat with a leather-bound Bible in their laps open to the Book of Psalms.

They were joined in the front row by Randy Short, a Washington, D.C., activist wearing a white religious smock who has described himself as Stone’s spiritual adviser.

In fact, Short participated in a small rally outside the courthouse on the first day of the trial, leading a chant that Stone was innocent and interspersing a pro-Trump song with the chorus: “I’m on the Trump train. We did it in ’16. Gonna do it again.”

In an interview, Short said Stone wasn’t concerned about the government’s parade of witnesses, which included Steve Bannon, the former Trump campaign CEO whom the government called to contradict Stone’s deposition to Congress that there had been no contact with Trump’s campaign about WikiLeaks.

“I don’t think Bannon is someone that would worry them,” Short said. “Their biggest fear from my sense is that there’s so many [jurors] who have intelligence community or government ties or ties to the former administration or lawyers. Where are the blue collar people on that? Really? I’m a Washingtonian. This city is still half black. If you look at the jury there are four blacks. There are two others and 10 white folks. It’s interesting not one black man is on there.”

“If you looked at the jury pool it looked like Green Bay, not like Washington, D.C. I mean, really,” Short added.

That was a theme that Stone’s daughter, Adria, also picked up on Twitter in the hours before the trial’s opening arguments.

“Look at our jury pool for Roger with eyes wide open! Spouses that work at DOJ, 10 yr position w congress, journalist, attorneys, admitting they have negative feelings about RJS & DT-all allowed!#realDonaldTrump#AGBarr” shewrotethat Wednesday morning.

Other close friends of Stone have said they’re not confident in a victory on the merits alone.

“In a courtroom where 90-plus percent are found guilty, it’s a problem,” said Michael Caputo, a former Trump 2016 campaign aide and longtime Stone friend who’s attended most of the Stone trial.

“I’m praying every day, and everybody I know is praying every day,” Caputo added. “When court starts and is in session, we have people in there praying. There’s going to need to be celestial intervention for him. It can happen.”

Since the trial opening, Stone’s lawyers have tried to mount a more traditional defense, searching for just one juror who would hold out and block a guilty verdict. They tried to get potential D.C. jurors booted from the pool based on their professed opposition to Trump.

They challenged the government’s witnesses, getting an FBI agent who obtained Stone’s communications to admit she didn’t know the content of Stone’s phone conversations even though they leaned on his phone records. They also got her to concede that she didn’t know whether Stone followed through on any alleged threats he made in emails.

Later, Stone’s team pressed Bannon to acknowledge that Stone never actually told him directly that he had WikiLeaks connections. Bannon said Stone simply gave him that impression.

With former Trump campaign deputy Rick Gates, Stone’s lawyers largely tried to shred his credibility, reminding the jury that he had already pleaded guilty of lying to special counsel Robert Mueller’s team. Gates’ testimony, they stressed, was part of a deal he struck to obtain a more lenient sentence.

But when it came time to mount a formal defense, Stone’s lawyers kept things simple.

They had the jury listen to about 50 minutes of audio from the September 2017 House deposition central to the charges against their client. That brought more of Stone’s voice into the trial, but jurors never heard directly from the normally voluble counterpuncher.

And so it was left to Stone’s lawyers to speak on his behalf. Their argument? Stone’s election-year behavior was de rigueur in politics. Candidates use opposition research all the time, they said.

“This is what happens in campaigns,” Rogow said.

Why would Stone have lied to lawmakers, Rogow asked the jury, given that he offered to speak publicly to the House panel and he even appeared without a subpoena?

“There’s no motive for Mr. Stone to do this,” he said.

It was the most Stone’s defense team had directly addressed the government’s arguments in months. Before last week, Stone and his attorneys had mostly pushed a narrative that Stone was the victim of a political hit job, carried out with the help of the media and the deep state.

They filed pleadings slamming the media and accusing prosecutors of trying to crimp Stone’s speech at the same time he was the subject of tens of thousands of hostile articles and a mocking Steve Martin impression on “Saturday Night Live.”

Ultimately, JacksonbannedStone in July from using Facebook, Twitter or any social media to trumpet this narrative.

Her decision came after an initial warning over a Stone Instagram post that appeared to show a gun’s crosshairs above a picture of Jackson’s head. Stone took the witness stand toapologizefor the incident, saying he didn’t fully control his Instagram account.

With Stone silenced, some of his supporters picked up the torch and pushed the limits even further.

InfoWars founder Alex Jones last week erroneously reported the name of a juror in the Stone trial based on the description that one woman gave identifying herself in open court as a former Obama-era communications aide for the Office of Management and Budget. Jones called her a “minion.”

“We’ve got to have Obama’s former communications director hang Roger. Hell, if they give him the death penalty, maybe she can hang him and kick the lever and he’ll break his neck and she can piss all over his dead body,” Jones said.

When Jackson found out about the incendiary remarks emanating from the far-right mediasphere, she chastised the rhetoric as “uninformed” and “unfortunately false.”

“It puts the safety of all the people on both sides, including possibly the jury, at risk,” she said.

In court, however, the outside hyperbole has had to grapple with Stone’s previous words, including a mountain of emails and text messages that seem to drip with contempt for the House’s fact-finding effort and Mueller’s investigation.

“Tell him to go f— himself,” Stone wrote about Mueller in one text message to liberal radio host and erstwhile friend Randy Credico.

It doesn’t matter what Stone is — or isn’t — saying now, prosecutors told the jurors. They have all the Stone commentary needed to render a verdict.

“The evidence here is written down for you,” prosecutor Michael Marando said in his closing argument Wednesday. “This is literally the defendant’s words.”

“Special counsel Robert Mueller testified before two House committees Wednesday, and his performance requires us to look at his investigation and report in a new light,” Kimberly Strassel writes in The Wall Street Journal.

Best Times to Visit Austin and What To Do

One of the best things about living in Austin is all the outdoor food and music festivals. Once spring hits there is SXSW and PGA TOUR’s Dell Technologies Match Play tour with non stop crawfish boils and swim time. Here is a list of my favorite events in Austin when you are not coming for a bachelorette or bachelor party (unless you want to tack it on around these)!

SXSW

SXSW , a two-week conference and party, is actually my favorite time of year. My New York City x West Coast world’s collide in my own town, and it’s SO cool! WHERE else do experts from the food, film, tech, music, and politics gather together in such a close nit space over two weeks- not even in NYC or LA. If your company is able to shell out thousands of dollars for a badge, you have access to see speakers like Kevin Systrom and Mike Kreiger from Instagram, Julia Kramer from Bon Appetit magazine who decides the “Hot Ten” best restaurants each year, producer and musician T Bone Burnett, comedian Kathy Griffin, marketing guru Bozoma Saint John.The Taco Meet up is also really cool as you get to try about 5 of the best tacos from around Austin.

If you don’t (like me!), there is still SO much going on and a lot of free parties and panels that brands through that are considered “unofficial.” A few of my favorites included: Outdoor Voices annual “A Brunch of Jogger’s,” Facebook’s concert showcase with Toro y Moi and later Ghostland Observatory through their other division Oculus, GOOP’s pop-up store and event with Brahmin bags (it does help if you have friends to get you in that work at these places), Malverde’s rooftop shows during music week above La Condesa, South x San Jose Free Concert Series in their parking lot with pop-up shops, panels by local entrepreneur’s and companies like: Bumble, Kendra Scott, Planoly, Packed Party.

The tip is to follow them on instagram, facebook, or subscribe and you’ll get all the invites and details! I was also lucky enough to see the preview of Hulu’s Shrill with Elizabeth Banks and Aidy Bryant, thanks to a friend who works for the theater here in Austin. Sitting on the same row as these actresses and producers and watching their work for the first time with them is an unmatchable experience. Texas Monthly, Yeti, Uber Eats all had music events and parties, and Rainey is another good place to check out activations and free stuff. Lastly, Wanderlust Yoga has free yoga for the whole two-weeks at Republic Square Park and a few great local brands like Juice Society, Fit Joy, GT’s Kombucha, Culina, and Cara Caulkins Communications hosted a Festival Recovery Lounge at a lovely Clarksville home to help those kick back into gear.

PGA TOUR’S DELL TECHNOLOGIES MATCH PLAY TOUR

Usually, the last weekend in March, this golf tournament takes place right by Austin 360’s bridge which has a great view of Lake Austin. Pro’s like Bubba Watson, Tiger Woods, Kevin Kisner play on the lovely course from Wednesday – Sunday with lots of local bbq, tacos, wineries, beers, Grey Goose lounges. It’s very intimate walking around and you’ll see the same folks and friends jaunting. There is also a lot of local fun going on with Save Muny more locally if you don’t make it out there.

CRAWFISH BOILS! Austin has an overflow of breweries, distilleries, BBQ joints, and outdoor music venues. You’ll find that right at the end of March and beginning of April that these places are dishing out the mud bugs with live music! Perla’s, TLC, The ABGB, and Scoot Inn to name a few.

AUSTIN FOOD & WINE FESTIVAL

C3 puts on this Austin Food & Wine Festival that showcases chef demos, wine tastings, and mostly local Austin and San Antonio chefs showing off their goods at the big Grand Tasting event held at Auditorium Shores with live fire pits, too. You’ll see cooking demos from some national big wigs like Jonathan Waxman, Nancy Silverton, Sarah Grueneberg, Aaron Sanchez, Andrew Zimmern. There are also evening events at Auditorium Shores like Grillin and Chillin where Tim Love hosts an outdoor dinner that you get to learn how to use a grill for. Rock Your Taco is always on Saturday night at Fairmarket with all kinds of taco creations from about 16 chefs and live music.

HOT LUCK FESTIVAL- Memorial Day Weekend

To kick off summer partners, Aaron Franklin (Franklin BBQ), James Moody (Mohawk and Guerilla Suit), and Mike Thelin (Feast Portland). This is extremely different than Austin Food & Wine. It’s all about the music and some baller chefs from all around the country doing their thing in a laid back atmosphere (even at Wild Onion Ranch) where it feels like it’s just a bunch of friends coming together to eat and drink. It’s everyone’s favorite chefs and restaurants flying in like Sara Kramer & Sarah Hymanson from Kismet in LA, Alon Shaya from New Orleans, Chris Shepard from Houston, Christina Tosi from Milk Bar all hanging with OUR favorite Austin chefs. The weekend food line up for 2019 is here. What makes it so great if you aren’t into diving into an entire food event is that you can still be a part of the fest and attend to music shows and feel the energy of the weekend. Some of these spots still have some creative chef snacks there, too and tickets are a much lower price point if you just want to dip in or even last minute. The city is again flooded with musicians and awesome shows that play not only two weekends back to back at Zilker Park but also at music venues around town for smaller private late night shows at spots like Stubb’s, Scoot Inn, Mohawk,etc as well as surprise pop-ups at Continental Club and I even saw Arizona at a Chipotle! Each weekend, there are 3 days of full line ups for Friday, Saturday, Sunday with headliners such as: Paul McCartney, St. Vincent, Metallica, Blood Orange, The National, Sofi Tukker, Nelly, Odesza, Chvrches, etc. If you want to step up your game, go for the VIP tickets. You get your own double decker viewing area of the main stage, unlimited drinks, sparkling waters, lunch and dinner, braid bars, clean bathrooms, etc. People also love to come for all the local food and beer tents at ACL Eats. TEXAS MONTHLY BBQ FEST Each year the Top 50 Barbecue restaurants (according to Daniel Vaughn at Texas Monthly) come to the Long Center to put on a 4 hour BBQ festival with around 30 booths serving smoked meats, mac ‘n cheese, pie’s, beer, big red, whiskey, and Desert Door Sotol. There is live music and great bands to sit and sway too after you start experiencing the meat sweats. This past year was the first time Franklin BBQ did not attend the fest because he did a more exclusive ticketed private dinner at the shop the night before. Some of my favorite ‘cue included: La BBQ, Micklethwait Craft Meats Lamb Chorizo Kolache, Snow’s BBQ, Louie Mueller’s Taco, Truth BBQ, Texas Pie Company that served 4 kinds of pie in one boat!

Manafort Loses Plea Deal After Judge Finds False Statements To Special Counsel

Paul Manafort added to his burgeoning record of alleged crimes and falsehoods this week with a decision from U.S. District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson that he had broken his cooperation agreement with Special Counsel Robert Mueller by making false statements and withholding information. The result could be devastating for Manafort who will now face sentencing without the benefit of the plea deal that he struck with Mueller. That could mean that, absent a pardon from President Donald Trump, Manafort could die in prison since he is looking at decades of potential jail time.

Jackson ruled that Manafort intentionally misled investigators on at least three matters. This included lying about his communications with Russian businessman Konstantin Kilimnik, a figure closely tied to Russian intelligence who was indicted by Mueller. He also allegedly lied about payments to a law firm and another unspecified matter.

While the ruling found that the Manafort did not lie on other subjects, including his communications with the White House, it leaves him in the worst possible position. He was previously convicted in Virginia on various counts and then pleaded guilty to other crimes in Washington. Those admissions will now be used against him without the benefit of a plea arrangement.

Manafort elected to divide the cases rather than face a single, unified trial. The reason may be that he believed the Virginia jury pool was better for him and he would succeed in defeating some of those counts or even secure a hung jury in his home state.

The problem for Manafort is these trials made it increasingly difficult to portray him as a victim. Indeed, the second trial involved allegations of money laundering and foreign lobbying as well as false statements to the FBI. The government is preparing almost three times the number of documents detailing his transactions and associations with an array of sleazy characters around the world.

Manafort’s dealings in the indictment include his involvement working on behalf of a pro-Russian faction in Ukraine. The prosecutors notably held back much of the evidence of Manafort’s Ukrainian dealings in the Virginia trial. Manafort was working for the interests of one of the most bloodsoaked and sinister figures in Eastern Europe — Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych — widely viewed as a Russian stooge who took over the government with the help of Moscow and ultimately did Moscow’s bidding. Yanukovych was accused of not only massive corruption, but also the murder of protesters and the arrest of political opponents. He accumulated an estimated net worth of $12 billion through alleged pilfering of Ukrainian funds. He ultimately fled to Russia.

When he fled into Russian exile, Yanokovych took away not only Manafort’s most important client but also the source of his wealth. Manafort’s opulent lifestyle now faced a serious downgrade. It was then, the government claims, that he began to lie to banks, the IRS and ultimately investigators.

In other words, Manafort is one of the least redeeming characters facing a sentencing and the last defendant who would want to do so without a prior sentencing agreement.

Manafort has been trying to play two-hands in this controversy: preserving a plea bargain will seeking a presidential pardon. He is now left with only a pardon as an escape from what could be a terminal sentence.

Manafort Indictment Exposes Luxe Real Estate Purchases

Paul Manafort, a former campaign manager for President Donald Trump, was indicted Monday on charges that he laundered millions of dollars from his work for a pro-Russia party in Ukraine through luxury real estate.

Investigators have identified at least four high-end properties belonging to Mr. Manafort subject to forfeiture if he’s found guilty, including a brownstone in Brooklyn, a SoHo condo, a lavish estate in the Hamptons and a 1920s single-family home in Arlington, Virginia.

Prosecutors say Mr. Manafort—who was placed under house arrest—stashed millions in accounts in Cyprus, Saint Vincent and the Seychelles to buy the properties.

“Manafort used his hidden overseas wealth to enjoy a lavish lifestyle in the United States, without paying taxes on that income,” the 12-count indictment says. Purchases include Range Rovers and nearly $1 million in men’s clothing. These mark the first charges by special prosecutor Robert Mueller, brought on to lead a probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election after Mr. Trump fired former FBI Director James Comey.

Mr. Manafort, 68, pleaded not guilty in court on Monday, with his lawyer calling the charges “ridiculous.”

The most luxurious home subject to forfeiture is a 2.4-acre estate in Water Mill, New York. Mr. Manafort funneled millions from accounts in Cyprus and the Grenadine islands to build up the property, according to the indictment. The county assesses the home at $5.3 million.

Mr. Manafort’s wife, Kathleen Manafort, purchased the tract of land in Water Mill for $400,000 in 1992, and a house was built on the property in 2001, according to records accessed through PropertyShark. But the indictment suggests many more millions were later funneled into renovations via illicit funds. (Ms. Manafort is not facing any charges.)

Prosecutors say Mr. Manafort wired more than $5.4 million from offshore accounts to a Hamptons home improvement company between 2008 and 2014 for work on the property and spent nearly $1 million of hidden funds on landscaping and installing an audio and video home integration system.

Now, the lavish 10-bedroom home consists of a red, two-story mansion and a matching guest/pool house, according to property records and aerial images. The grounds include a pool, paved patio with a pergola, tennis court, basketball court, putting green, a pond and manicured gardens.

The indictment also alleges Mr. Manafort wired $1.9 million from Cyprus to purchase a four-bedroom home in the Washington, D.C., bedroom community of Arlington, Virginia. His daughter, Andrea, is named as the owner of the 1920s Arts and Crafts house in county property records.

The 2,600-square-foot house underwent a renovation a couple of years before the Manaforts’ ownership, taking down walls to open up the floor plan and adding a handful of state-of-the-art kitchen appliances, according to a previous listing. The home has an assessed value of $1.7 million.

The charges against Mr. Manafort—who was chairman of Mr. Trump’s presidential campaign from March to June 2016—cover the decade from 2006 to 2016. Prosecutors laid out two cases of alleged money laundering in which Mr. Manafort bought homes in New York City using hidden foreign income and then took out loans on them in order to obtain cash.

In 2012, he allegedly wired money from Cyprus accounts to purchase two homes in New York City: a SoHo condo for $2.85 million and multi-family brownstone in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, for $3 million cash.

Mr. Manafort, authorities claim, lied that his daughter lived in the two-bedroom, two-bathroom Manhattan condo—with its trendy exposed brick interiors—in order to secure a $3.185 million mortgage on the property, when he was actually renting the home out on Airbnb.

In Brooklyn, Mr. Manafort obtained a $5 million construction loan in order to convert the multi-family townhouse into a single-home dwelling. But authorities called foul in the indictment, saying he violated the terms of the loan by using the proceeds to buy another property in California.

Both New York City homes are now subject to forfeiture if the political operative is found guilty.

The four homes targeted for forfeiture are only a portion of Mr. Manafort’s real estate holdings. The indictment suggests he laundered money through home improvements to other homes, though it’s unclear whether prosecutors might add more properties to the list. The Special Counsel’s Office declined to comment beyond the indictment.

For instance, he transferred $1.3 million from accounts in Cyprus and the U.K. to a Florida company specializing in home automation, lighting and home entertainment. He wired another $400,000 to a contractor there, the indictment says.

Mr. Manafort and his wife have a three-bedroom villa in a swanky golf enclave in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. He bought the property with a glass-covered pool and one-bedroom guest house, for $1.5 million in 2007, property records show. The Manaforts often use their Florida property as their primary mailing address.

He’s accused of spending another $1 million in unclaimed foreign income on antique rugs between 2008 and 2010 in Alexandria, Virginia. In 2015, the Manaforts bought a three-bedroom apartment in a new luxury condominium there for $2.7 million, according to property records.

The Manaforts also own a condo at Trump Tower that they bought in 2015 for an undisclosed amount in property records.

Former Running Back DeMarco Murray Lists His Nashville-Area Home for $3.3M

Former Tennessee Titans running back DeMarco Murray has punted on his Franklin, TN, home, putting it on the market for $3.29 million.

The 30-year-old announced his retirement earlier this year, three months after being released by the Titans. The All-Pro is now ready to release his luxurious Nashville-area mansion, which he bought in 2016 (when he joined the Titans) for $2.95 million.

The traditional manse is worthy of a touchdown dance. After Murray and his wife, Heidi Mueller, purchased the place, they brought in the pros.

“DeMarco and Heidi solicited the help of talented interior designer Erica Hartlein to help them create their perfect Nashville dream home,” says listing agent Paula Hinegardner.

The result? A “casually elegant, French manor-style residence that’s perfect for both celebrity entertaining and the everyday, crazy life of a young family,” she adds, noting the couple lived in the home with their two children and two dogs.

The estate boasts “casual elegance with gracious spaces, luxurious interior design and state-of-the-art home technology,” the listing notes. It’s located in a gated community that has been home to celebrities including musician Alan Jackson and former MLB pitcher Kevin Jarvis.

The 9,600-square-foot home on an acre lot has six bedrooms, seven bathrooms, three half-baths, and an elevator. The two-story home features an open-concept living and dining area, formal dining room, grand entry, game room, and home theater. The master wing comes with a private office, coffee bar, and spa bath. Other amenities include a four-car garage and a dog run.

Hinegardner calls the “amazing private outdoor living space” a standout. It features a spacious living room, pool, spa, and deck, as well as a cabana with a full kitchen and shower.

The Las Vegas native starred in college with the Oklahoma Sooners. He began his NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys in 2011, and also played with the Philadelphia Eagles before landing with the Titans.

“It’s been a long time thinking, the last year or two, and physically, mentally, and emotionally, I think it’s time for me to hang it up,” Murray said of his retirement, according to ESPN.

The Ringer noted running backs have particularly short-lived NFL careers due to the physical demands of the position. Murray retired just three years after he was named AP’s Offensive Player of the Year. He has since joined Fox as a college football analyst.

After McKalla Place stadium fight, several city-owned properties are poised for new life

Mueller, Seaholm, Colony Park and McKalla Place are vastly different places spread out across Austin.

But they have common roots as public land with a new lease on life through City Hall’s redevelopment efforts.

Mueller and Seaholm were transformed from a municipal airport and a decommissioned power plant, respectively, into mixed-use destinations. Mueller’s master developer, Catellus Development Corp., is poised to develop Colony Park in Northeast Austin into a master-planned community with thousands of homes.

And a pending deal for McKalla Place, a 24-acre tract in North Austin on the edge of The Domain, could soon give rise to a soccer stadium for Austin’s first major-league sports franchise.

So what’s next for the city’s real estate portfolio?

It’s a conversation that will linger long after this summer’s debate over Major League Soccer in North Austin fades into history because there are 13 more sites on the table.

And it’s an increasingly relevant conversation, to developers and taxpayers alike, as the city tries to use all its tools, including the dirt it owns, to address simmering issues like home unaffordability, vanishing creative space and gentrification.

“It is our obligation to make sure that our city-owned lands are used for the highest value,” Mayor Pro Tem Kathie Tovo said.

‘Highest maximum potential’

The city’s redevelopment process tends to focus on repurposing underused or decommissioned land.

"We use real estate to collaborate with the private sector to create development that results in community benefits,” said Christine Maguire, the city’s redevelopment division manager. “It’s about how real estate can leverage community benefits… and City Council strategic goals.”

She said the "North Star" guiding that effort are directives such as the 2012 Imagine Austin Comprehensive Plan.

"There’s also the real needs and aspirations of the community in real time," she said.

At this time, that means city-owned land is looked at for its potential for affordable housing, creative space for artists and health care opportunities "in areas of our city that have been traditionally ignored," Maguire said.

An Aug. 3 memo from city staff identified these four properties as the most ripe to go through the redevelopment process:

Here’s another prime site in East Austin. This one, at 2201 Grove Blvd., is near Riverside Drive and just a couple of minutes away from the airport. The land that will be available is only a portion of this photo and includes some of the wooded area.

"We’re going to move [on] the first group that has the highest maximum potential," Maguire said.

Maguire cautioned there’s a lot of due diligence the city needs to perform by analyzing those sites at a "fine-tooth level" over the next several months.

"It is really doing our homework on any physical, regulatory or legal constraints on the property," she said.

‘So much opportunity to have an impact’

But that’s not all.

Local experts with the Urban Land Institute conduct research on topics relevant to affordability in Austin, such as the city’s permitting processes and employer-assisted housing. This spring, they began researching the development of affordable housing on government property.

As the subject of their study, they used five city sites that were highlighted for their development potential in a March report to Council. In addition to Justin Lane, McKalla Place and Home Depot/Chrysler, they looked at the HealthSouth building at 1215 Red River St. and the Winnebago tract at 4711 Winnebago Lane.

Paulette Gibbins, the executive director of ULI’s Austin chapter, said they wanted to analyze sites through their proximity to transportation, job opportunities and food and education options.

"For an affordable project to really be affordable, being able to have the cost of the land taken out of the equation… really makes these affordable projects happen," she said. With "building on government land there’s really so much opportunity to have an impact."

HealthSouth, a former physical rehabilitation center near the old Brackenridge hospital, was identified as the site with the highest opportunity due to its location and ability to capitalize on low-income housing tax credits.

"Let’s face it, there’s not many [affordable] places available downtown," Gibbins said.

In its March report, the city identified more long-range options, such as the One Texas Center surface parking lot at 505 Barton Springs Road or 411 Chicon, an East Austin parcel near the Plaza Saltillo MetroRail station where the city’s building services department is located.

City-owned property along RR 2222, FM 812, Johnny Morris Road and East William Cannon Drive were also floated as long-term development opportunities.

But don’t hold your breath.

"It may be a decision by the city to never let go" of those properties, Maguire said.

‘Recognize how capital looks at Austin’

The desires of area residents will play a role in the city’s deliberations.

Maguire said they want to continue community engagement work already started by some on City Council, such as Leslie Pool with the Justin Lane property and Greg Casar with Home Depot/Chrysler.

"We want to build upon that… and not supplant that great work," she said.

The site’s constraints and community feedback would be packaged into a competitive solicitation process like a request for proposals, Maguire said.

There’s a sense of urgency among city officials to redevelop city land to address affordability issues while Austin’s economy remains healthy.

Maguire said the city needs to take advantage of Austin’s "smoking hot market." Put simply, it’s relatively easy now to attract real estate interest from across the country and overseas.

Consider this: Earlier this year, for the first time, the Texas capital broke into the top 10 cities to invest in the Americas in an annual survey from CBRE Group Inc.

The report said investors are “racing to find the next Seattle by increasing their focus on the higher-yield potential of high-growth secondary markets” — and Austin is one of them. Austin tied with Toronto, Canada, as the 10th-most desirable place to invest this year.

"It’s an international city and we need to be able to recognize how capital looks at Austin," Maguire said. "We’re in a very strong position and we need maximize that strong position… particularly in places that haven’t seen that investment before."

While professional sports may not be on the horizon with other city properties, Maguire hopes community feedback and passion from the McKalla Place debate will stick around moving forward.

"I really hope that continues for every… opportunity that the city has," she said. "It’s really a challenge if nobody cares."

After the four sites outlined above, city officials have ID’d these tracts as being next in line for a revamp.
