Home Screen Redesign & Development

When creating further screens for Bookmark, I went back and revisited the screens I had already made with a fresh perspective and a goal to make them easier to use and understand. 

The home screen was something I knew I could improve upon, especially as it's one of the primary screens for the app. So I carried out a lot of research into other content-heavy screens focusing on Flipboard, Apple Music, Spotify and Letterboxd to see how I could improve my designs UI.

On the left is the initial Home screen design from my Semester 1, this involved users having to scroll down to view only 12 'popular' books from new releases. However, this was lacking as it didn't provide enough content to be suitable for a home screen. It also wasn't a personalised shelf of books for users to choose from, and it was generic which defeated the purpose of the app which is to promote users to read more (on books that interest them or appeal to them to read in the first place).

The New Home Screen - Changes Made

On the right is my new and improved home screen layout, there's been a significant redesign to this screen. I felt there was so much that needed to be added and improved so now the UI IS much more minimal, crisp and elegant in its redesign. One of the small changes I made was removing the search navigation from the top of the screen. As after receiving feedback from experienced UX Designer from Fathom, he recommended putting the Seach icon on the right of the title so that it takes less room and is still as easy to find for users.

I added personalised recommendations for users from their onboarding genre choices. The home screen displays four books out of their three selected genres which were - Thriller, Fiction & Self Help.

There are also 12 books from the New Releases section for users to swipe across to view the rest of the shelf.

Similar to this is the Most Popular section; users can swipe further across the screen to view the rest of this shelf. I also redesigned the 3D shelf using Procreate to try and create a more effective UI and to make it appear like the books are sitting on a physical shelf.

I also redesigned all apps so that the top nav is the primary blue colour, rather than having it merely white like beforehand. As this didn't do anything for the screen and it also didn't highlight the titles of each screen the way it does now.
