Greedflation, but for prisoners
I'm touring my new, nationally bestselling novel The Bezzle! Catch me TOMORROW (Apr 21) in TORINO, then Marin County (Apr 27), Winnipeg (May 2), Calgary (May 3), Vancouver (May 4), and beyond!
Today in "Capitalists Hate Capitalism" news: The Appeal has published the first-ever survey of national prison commissary prices, revealing just how badly the prison profiteer system gouges American's all-time, world-record-beating prison population:
https://theappeal.org/locked-in-priced-out-how-much-prison-commissary-prices/
Like every aspect of the prison contracting system, prison commissaries – the stores where prisoners are able to buy food, sundries, toiletries and other items – are dominated by private equity funds that have bought out all the smaller players. Private equity deals always involve gigantic amounts of debt (typically, the first thing PE companies do after acquiring a company is to borrow heavily against it and then pay themselves a hefty dividend).
The need to service this debt drives PE companies to cut quality, squeeze suppliers, and raise prices. That's why PE loves to buy up the kinds of businesses you must spend your money at: dialysis clinics, long-term care facilities, funeral homes, and prison services.
Prisoners, after all, are a literal captive market. Unlike capitalist ventures, which involve the risk that a customer will take their business elsewhere, prison commissary providers have the most airtight of monopolies over prisoners' shopping.
Not that prisoners have a lot of money to spend. The 13th Amendment specifically allows for the enslavement of convicted criminals, and so even though many prisoners are subject to forced labor, they aren't necessarily paid for it:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/04/02/captive-customers/#guillotine-watch
Six states ban paying prisoners anything. North Carolina caps prisoners' pay at one dollar per day. Nationally, prisoners earn $0.52/hour, while producing $11b/year in goods and services:
https://www.dollarsandsense.org/archives/2024/0324bowman.html
So there's a double cruelty to prison commissary price-gouging. Prisoners earn far less than any other kind of worker, and they pay vastly inflated prices for the necessities of life. There's also a triple cruelty: prisoners' families – deprived of an incarcerated breadwinner's earnings – are called upon to make up the difference for jacked up commissary prices out of their own strained finances.
So what does prison profiteering look like, in dollars and sense? Here's the first-of-its-kind database tracking the costs of food, hygiene items and religious items in 46 states:
https://theappeal.org/commissary-database/
Prisoners rely heavily on commissaries for food. Prisons serve spoiled, inedible food, and often there isn't enough to go around – prisoners who rely on the food provided by their institutions literally starve. This is worst in prisons where private equity funds have taken over the cafeteria, which is inevitable accompanied by swingeing cuts to food quality and portions:
https://theappeal.org/prison-food-virginia-fluvanna-correctional-center/
So you have one private equity fund starving prisoners, and another that's gouging them on food. Or sometimes it's the same company. Keefe Group, owned by HIG Capital, provides commissaries to prisons whose cafeterias are managed by other HIG Capital portfolio companies like Trinity Services Group. HIG also owns the prison health-care company Wellpath – so if they give you food poisoning, they get paid twice.
Wellpath delivers "grossly inadequate healthcare":
https://theappeal.org/massachusetts-prisons-wellpath-dentures-teeth/
And Trinity serves "meager portions of inedible food":
https://theappeal.org/clayton-county-jail-sheriff-election/
When prison commissaries gouge on food, no part of the inventory is spared, even the cheapest items. In Florida, a packet of ramen costs $1.06, 300% more inside the prison than it does at the Target down the street:
https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/24444312-fl_doc_combined_commissary_lists#document/p6/a2444049
America's prisoners aren't just hungry, they're also hot. The climate emergency is sending temperatures in America's largely un-air-conditioned prisons soaring to dangerous levels. Commissaries capitalize on this, too: an 8" fan costs $40 in Delaware's Sussex Correctional Institution. In Georgia, that fan goes for $32 (but prisoners are not paid for their labor in Georgia pens). And in scorching Texas, the commissary raised the price of water by 50% last summer:
https://www.tpr.org/criminal-justice/2023-07-20/texas-charges-prisoners-50-more-for-water-for-as-heat-wave-continues
Toiletries are also sold at prices that would make an airport gift-shop blush. Need denture adhesive? That's $12.28 in an Idaho pen, triple the retail price. 15% of America's prisoners are over 55. The Keefe Group – sister company to the "grossly inadequate" healthcare company Wellpath – operates that commissary. In Oregon, the commissary charges a 200% markup on hearing-aid batteries. Vermont charges a 500% markup on reading glasses. Imagine spending decades in prison: toothless, blind, and deaf.
Then there's the religious items. Bibles and Christmas cards are surprisingly reasonable, but a Qaran will run you $26 in Vermont, where a Bible is a mere $4.55. Kufi caps – which cost $3 or less in the free world – go for $12 in Indiana prisons. A Virginia prisoner needs to work for 8 hours to earn enough to buy a commissary Ramadan card (you can buy a Christmas card after three hours' labor).
Prison price-gougers are finally facing a comeuppance. California's new BASIC Act caps prison commissary markups at 35% (California commissaries used to charge 63-200% markups):
https://theappeal.org/price-gouging-in-california-prisons-newsom-signature/
Last year, Nevada banned any markup on hygiene items:
https://www.leg.state.nv.us/App/NELIS/REL/82nd2023/Bill/10425/Overview
And prison tech monopolist Securus has been driven to the brink of bankruptcy, thanks to the activism of Worth Rises and its coalition partners:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/04/08/money-talks/
When someone tells you who they are, believe them the first time. Prisons show us how businesses would treat us if they could get away with it.

whos your favorite player on every team?
Ooh, this is a fun one! Under the cut :) Also not gonna use former Devils, and gonna try to stay away from just naming the most known player on each team... we'll see.
Anaheim Ducks: Lukas Dostal is doing a damn good job tending that net. I'm super excited to see where he goes!
Arizona Coyotes: Of course, our pride king Travis Dermott!
Boston Bruins: Look. I said I was gonna not name the most known players. But you can't expect me not to name a goalie for the Bruins! Impossible! I'm gonna give the edge to Jeremy Swayman.
Buffalo Sabres: Probably Jeff Skinner, honestly. Most cursed man in hockey. Does that make me old?
Calgary Flames: I don't follow the Flames much but I do really like Cody Taylor.
Carolina Hurricanes: Pyotr Kochetkov is, in my opinion, the only Cane with rights.
Chicago Blackhawks: All Star Jason Dickinson just seems like a funny dude. Well, for having to play for Chicago...
Colorado Avalanche: I am forgiving Ross Colton for that really shitty shift against the Devils because he's holding Woody's hand and they're cute. But I'm watching you, mister.
Columbus Blue Jackets: Alexandre Texier. He's French! And played in Switzerland last year! And is suffering!
Dallas Stars: Thomas Harley is carrying half my fantasy teams and he seems like such a fun dude!
Detroit Red Wings: Jake Walman, hitting the griddy, and getting a bobblehead after it.
Edmonton Oilers: I am not immune to Ryan McLeod propaganda. Just look at his smile!
Florida Panthers: Sam Reinhart, the highest-paid Panther, has no goals and one assist in his last six games and his ice time is declining. Where are the Sabres fans who told me how much they would miss him? When I hear of all the positive qualities the team lacked in the past, I think of Reinhart - lol nah that's just the Reino copypasta. Love him!
Los Angeles Kings: Long Distance Girlfriend Kevin Fiala and his hysterical wife!
Minnesota Wild: Mats Zuccarello is very short. This is always fun. Especially because his stick is very long. Also fun.
Montreal Canadiens: Juraj Slafkovsky is not only worryingly homoerotic with every single Slav he meets, he is also trying valiantly to overcome the bust narrative, and he's silly and goofy! What more do you want?
Nashville Predators: Roman Josi. I am not immune to a good-looking Swiss man.
New Jersey Devils: All of them. I'm in a Dougie Hamilton mood right now, though. (Aka, I miss him :'( )
New York Islanders: The Real Sebastian Aho, simply because it's funny there's two of them. Also, this one is prettier.
New York Rangers: There's a fic out there that makes me somewhat like Braden Schneider.
Ottawa Senators: I'm saluting Jacob Bernard-Docker for his services to my fantasy teams.
Philadelphia Flyers: The image of Known USNTDP Member Cam York fielding calls from Zegras on how to take care of his platonic soulmate is truly peak.
Pittsburgh Penguins: The Other Smitty, Reilly Smith. I am predictable. I have a type.
San Jose Sharks: Anthony Duclair! And his many sons on the team.
Seattle Kraken: Kailer Yamamoto. I just like him because he's short, okay? He also seems to have a very fun character, which I admire.
St. Louis Blues: Colton Parayko, for no other reason than it's a very good hockey name.
Tampa Bay Lightning: Brayden Point is another of those players that just eternally carries my fantasy teams.
Toronto Maple Leafs: I think Calle Jarnkrok is eternally underrated. And I'm right.
Vancouver Canucks: Stanley Cup Champion Teddy Blueger. He deserves it.
Vegas Golden Knights: I simply believe that if one does not at least admire Jack Eichel for his dedication to being a bitch and ruining all the narratives, one does not exist to me.
Washington Capitals: They have Dylan Strome from the fics! It just takes some time, little girl you're in the middle of the ride, everything everything will be just fine, everything everything will be alright alright...
Winnipeg Jets: Nino Niederreiter. God, I hope he finds a home some day. I hope it could be Winnipeg.

following the canon timeline for the legion, frank is 19 in 1996 (year of the murder and abduction by the entity), implying he was born in 1977. he was 6 years old when he was taken from his home in calgary (alberta’s largest city, the third largest city in canada) and tossed around foster homes across alberta. implying he was separated from his parents in 1983; this would have occurred during one of the worst recessions in global history; wages for low-wage workers rapidly declined, and the world price of oil collapsed. alberta’s economy plunged into a deep recession. oil companies, which were in massive debt due to years of exploration with no profit, filed for bankruptcy and curtailed, or abandoned operations in alberta altogether. by 1992, 25% of calgary’s population were living under the standard poverty line.
frank grew up in a densely populated, expensive city. when the recession reached calgary, his parents could not afford their apartment and were driven into houselesness, living out of their car. social services processed frank and separated him from his biological family. for days. then the days bled into weeks. into months. into years. his foster parents received fat checks to keep frank fed and sheltered. nothing else. in 1984, his parents froze to death in their minivan when the heater stopped working. the local government took his survivor benefits and stored it in state coffers. frank never saw or spent it.
for the first five years, he screamed and cried and fought and repeatedly tried to run away. raging against the unfairness. spent two birthdays in a juvenile detention center for physically attacking a foster parent.
74% of all children in alberta’s foster care system are indigenous. first nation children make up 82% of canada’s permanent wards. the older wards used to call it the new residential schools. frank was a foster brother to many aboriginal foster kids, and he was often mistaken as one of them because of his features. when he was 15, frank attempted to contact his hualapai relatives in arizona; an effort to finally escape the cycle of foster homes. but frank’s efforts to reconnect with his estranged family were ultimately in vain. the legalities of immigration and blood quantum did not favor frank’s unique circumstances.
frank learned that no one was coming to save him. by design. so, fuck it. fuck them. and all the stupid fucking rules that stopped him from getting what he wanted.
frank’s trauma within the foster care system cultivated his overt/antagonistic narcissism and antisocial or “anti-society” personality. arrogance and aggression became a protective shield that cushioned the worst of his experiences, becoming vital to his survival and inseparable from his core self. with authority (police, foster parents, social workers, bullies), frank learned to watch for certain body languages, vocal tones. tells. their habits. their interests. their insecurities. he learned to use his intense observation skills to lie, manipulate, cheat, etc.. people were objects or assets, forgettable faces he would never see again as he constantly moved around foster homes.
for every town or city he was bussed to, frank would get a tattoo. to keep him focused. to remember. as a rule, his rule, frank only sticks around until the skin cools and the ink dries.
ormond, and the legion, became the only exception.
frank lived in ormond for three years, which implies he was 16 years old when he moved into the trailer park with clive andrews. in those three years, frank nurtured his obsession with julie, joey, and susie.
frank views the other members of the legion as tools. weapons. his favorite weapons. extensions of himself, like body parts. and, like his body, he protects them. appealing to their interests. infiltrating their darkest secrets, their insecurities. enabling their worst instincts. julie’s boredom. joey’s rejection sensitivity. susie’s loneliness. and frank’s anger, bleeding into them like a virus.
when the entity takes its killers, it makes an offer. if the offer is refused, the entity takes them anyway, and forces them to become its killers through supernatural torture. frank was offered an eternity with the only people he has ever cared about. no rules. no turbulent future. no way to separate them. together, forever.
he did not reject the offer.
#MORRISON ,FRANK.#SCRIPT.#frank fucked up real bad and the only solution seemed to be: make a deal with Canadian Satan or whatever#obsession4obsessions yknow it be like that#abuse cw#death cw

Clipboard Icon
Procedures & Aftercare
Kensington Clinic offers medication and aspiration abortions, as well as procedures to help you manage a miscarriage. For your convenience and privacy, pre-operative services including ultrasound and labs, are provided at the clinic on the day of your procedure.
bortion
There are a few types of procedures provided at Kensington Clinic:
Medication Abortion from 6 to 10 weeks
Aspiration Abortion from 6 to 16 weeks
Dilation and Evacuation from 16 to 20 weeks
It is important to know the duration of your pregnancy. This is measured by the number of weeks from the first day of your last normal menstrual period. If you are travelling a long distance from Calgary, or your pregnancy is 12 weeks or more, we recommend you obtain an ultrasound before coming for your appointment to ensure we will be able to provide the care you need. When you book your appointment, a receptionist will ask for the first day of your last menstrual period, and which type of procedure you are booking for.
Medication Abortion
Medication abortion is done in Canada using a combination of medications, together called Mifegymiso. Mifegymiso includes two medications that are taken over two days.
If your pregnancy is between 6 and 10 weeks (70 days), counting from the first day of your last normal menstrual period, you may choose either a medication abortion or an aspiration abortion. Please read about both types of procedures before booking your appointment.
All assessments including ultrasound and lab work (including a blood test for Rh type and pregnancy hormone) are done on the day of your appointment, meaning you do not have to go anywhere other than Kensington Clinic for the evaluation of your pregnancy.
Before you receive the medication, we will do an ultrasound to confirm you are no more than 10 weeks (70 days) pregnant. If you are eligible for a medication abortion, you will meet with our counsellor to discuss the steps in detail. You will then meet with a nurse who will take your medical history and do blood work. After this, the physician will start the treatment.
Mifegymiso
Mifepristone: You will take the first medication, mifepristone, in the clinic. Mifepristone will destabilize the lining of your uterus to end the pregnancy. Once you take this medication these effects are not reversible.
Misoprostol: You will be given the second medication, misoprostol, to take home on the day of your appointment. You will insert the misoprostol tablets into your vagina or into the cheeks of your mouth 24-48 hours after you take the mifepristone. You may choose the time of day you take the misoprostol, but be aware that you will start to bleed heavily within 1-4 hours. As you can expect to have heavy bleeding and strong cramping, you should choose a time when you are safe to rest. The bleeding and cramping may continue for several hours. After that, bleeding may continue off and on for up to 6 weeks.
There is a 2-5% failure rate with these medications.
Side Effects
Most people will need pain medications such as extra strength ibuprofen and acetaminophen to help with the pain associated with medication abortion. Heavy bleeding resulting in soaking 1-2 large pads every hour may occur for several hours, with on and off bleeding for up to 6 weeks. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, chills, headaches and fatigue are common side effects of the medications. Some people will find these side effects to be intense. If you are unsure you are can manage these symptoms at home, you should choose an aspiration abortion instead.
Medication Abortion vs Aspiration Abortion
Please consider carefully which type of procedure best suits you. Although there is bleeding and cramping with both aspiration and medication abortions, bleeding and cramping will be more intense and of greater duration with a medication abortion. Our staff will be happy to answer any questions you may have before you make your decision. However, if you book for one type of appointment and change your mind on the day of the appointment, you will have to rebook an appointment on another day. Please read the Comparison of Early Abortion Options
Medication Abortion Aspiration Abortion
How far along in the pregnancy can I be?
6 to 9 weeks (63 days) from the first day of
your last menstrual period.
6 to 20 weeks from the first day of day of
your last menstrual period.
Is it safe?
With both medication and aspiration abortions, there is a small risk of complications, but
abortion is at least 10 times safer than continuing a pregnancy.
Is follow-up required?
Yes. You will need to complete follow-up in 6
weeks to ensure the pregnancy has ended.
This will involve a urine test, a blood test or a
vaginal ultrasound.
No. The doctor will ensure the abortion is
complete during your appointment. You are
not required to return to the clinic for followup unless you have concerns.
How is the abortion done?
Medication causes the abortion. Heavy
bleeding with clots is common as the
pregnancy is passed, and this can continue
for several hours.
The doctor opens the cervix and removes the
pregnancy from the uterus using instruments
and suction. This usually takes 5-10 minutes.
How painful is it?
Cramps can be very strong for a number of
hours during the medication abortion. Pain
medication (such as Tylenol and Advil) can
help.
You will be given local anesthetic and IV
sedation during the procedure, and this will
help relieve pain. You may feel some cramps
during the procedure and right afterwards.
How much will I bleed?
You could have light to heavy bleeding for 1-4 weeks after either type of abortion.
Can the abortion fail?
The medication works 97% of the time. The aspiration is successful over 99% of the
time.
Can I still have children afterwards?
YES. Neither type of abortion lowers your chances of getting and staying pregnant in the
future.

the abortion happens at hom Aspiration Abortion / D&C
An aspiration abortion is done entirely in our clinic on the day of your appointment. All assessments including an ultrasound are done in the clinic so you do not have to go anywhere other than Kensington Clinic for evaluation of your pregnancy. After the ultrasound, you will meet with our counsellor to discuss the procedure in detail. You will then meet with a nurse who will take your medical history prior to your procedure. During the procedure, you will receive sedation that helps makes you feel comfortable and relaxed.
6 to 12 weeks — If your pregnancy is between 6 and 12 weeks, the doctor gently opens the cervix a small amount in our comfortable procedure room. Once the cervix is opened appropriately, the doctor uses gentle suction to clean out the contents of the uterus. The doctor may use a spoon-shaped instrument (curette) to check the walls of the uterus for any tissue that may remain. The doctor will check to ensure all of the pregnancy is removed and the procedure is complete. The procedure will last less than 10 minutes, but your appointment will take 3 hours.
13 to 16 weeks — If your pregnancy is 13 weeks to 16 weeks, you will first be given a medication before the procedure called Misoprostol. Misoprostol softens the cervix and makes dilation easier. Misoprostol takes about 2 hours to work, so you will be given a recliner to rest in. The procedure will last up to 15 minutes as described above. Your appointment will take 4-5 hours.
You will rest in the recovery area after the procedure is over. There is generally no follow-up required after an aspiration abortion. Most patients return to normal activities the following day.
Medication Abortion vs Aspiration Abortion
Please consider carefully which type of procedure best suits you. Although there is bleeding and cramping with both aspiration and medication abortions, bleeding and cramping will be more intense and of greater duration with a medication abortion. Our staff will be happy to assist you and answer your questions and concerns before you make your appointment. However, if you book for one type of appointment and change your mind on the day of the appointment, you will have to rebook an appointment on another day. Please read the. Dilation and Evacuation
16 to 20 weeks — If you are over 16 weeks, the procedure will occur over 2 days. The cervix needs to be opened by inserting laminaria (osmotic dilators) the day before the abortion. These absorb moisture and expand, gently opening the cervix. They are left in overnight. Plan to be in the clinic 2-3 hours on the first day.
The next morning you will return to the clinic and be given Misoprostol tablets to aid in softening the cervix. These take approximately two hours to work, so you will be given a comfortable recliner to rest in. When you are ready, the physician will remove the laminaria and complete the procedure. On the second day, the procedure will take 10 to 30 minutes. Expect to be in the clinic for 4-5 hours on the second day.Miscarriage
Kensington Clinic offers timely care for treatment of miscarriages and fetal demise.
Your physician may refer you or you may book your own appointment.
When a pregnancy ends on its own, it is called a spontaneous abortion or miscarriage. Miscarriages are common, occurring in 25% of pregnancies. A miscarriage usually cannot be prevented and is no one’s fault.
There is no right or wrong way to emotionally feel about a miscarriage. Experiencing a miscarriage holds different meaning to everyone. Some want to explore ways to remember the pregnancy. Others may want to just focus on getting through the procedure on the day of the appointment. You can speak with a counsellor at Kensington Clinic if you want to explore ways to feel supported, remember the pregnancy, care for the pregnancy remains, or discuss a plan for further support after the surgical procedure. Our staff can provide resources and referrals in the community for support after a miscarriage. One organization is the Pregnancy & Infant Loss Support Centre.
You have options when it comes to caring for pregnancy remains and a counsellor will support you with whichever feels right for you. Options include:
The Silent Hopes Memorial is a program where pregnancy remains lost to miscarriage are cremated and interred at a memorial garden in Calgary. There is no charge for this program.
Private arrangements including burial or cremation can be arranged through a funeral home of your choice or the clinic will recommend a local funeral home to support you with this.
The clinic will care for the pregnancy remains in a regulated manner and no further involvement is required on your part.
If your pregnancy is very early, your doctor may have given you options to treat your pregnancy loss, including:
Waiting (expectant management) for the pregnancy to expel on its own.
Treatment with a medication called Mifegymiso will cause your uterus to contract and help your body expel the pregnancy. This is successful about 90% of the time within 2-3 days of taking it. Heavy bleeding and cramping are normal with this process. If unsuccessful, you may require a D&C.
Treatment with a procedure (D&C) to remove the pregnancy from your uterus. A procedure for miscarriage involves the removal of the pregnancy and placental tissue from the uterus. This is called Uterine Aspiration or Dilation and Curettage (D&C) for pregnancies up to 15 weeks by ultrasound.
If you are over 16 weeks by ultrasound when you miscarried, the procedure to remove the pregnancy and placental tissue is called Dilation and Evacuation (D&E). You can read about the risks of these procedures here.
If you have chosen to treat your miscarriage with a D&C, or your pregnancy is at a stage where your safest option is to be treated with a D&C or D&E, your doctor can refer you to a hospital or Kensington Clinic for the procedure. You may also book your own appointment at Kensington Clinic. At Kensington Clinic we will make every effort to see you within a few days of your referral or request.
Procedures are done using IV sedation. You may feel very drowsy and not remember much after, but you will not be completely asleep. For procedures under 16 weeks, you can expect to be in the clinic for 2-3 hours. For procedures over 16 weeks, your stay in the clinic may be closer to 4-5 hours, or you may be required to come for two appointments on consecutive days. When you book your appointment, we will let you know what you can expect. You must arrange to have someone drive you home.
We will require copies of all the diagnostic investigations that have determined your pregnancy has ended or is non-viable. If you and your doctor have established you are eligible for genetic testing to determine the cause of your miscarriage, your doctor will need to forward the appropriate requisitions for the tests to us and Kensington Clinic will ensure this is done.
For more information or to book an appointment,Risks of Procedures
Aspiration Abortion or D&C
Uterine aspiration, D&C, and D&E are some of the most common procedures in Canada. The rate of complications is less than 2% and most complications are minor and easily treated. If compared to pregnancy and childbirth, these procedures have fewer complications. However, like any procedure there are risks you should be aware of.
Infection in the uterus occurs in 0.1 to 2% of aspiration procedures. You will be given one dose of antibiotics before your procedure to help prevent this from happening.
Retained tissue (some pregnancy tissue is left in the uterus). This occurs in 0.5 to 1% of aspiration procedures. Further medical care may be necessary.
Continued pregnancy or failed abortion. This is rare with aspiration abortions and more likely if the uterus has an unusual shape, if the pregnancy is very early (less than 6 weeks), or if the pregnancy is not in the uterus. You may have to return for another visit or be referred to another physician. With a normal pregnancy in a normal uterus, there is less than a 0.1% chance of this occurring.
Post-abortion hematometra. This is a rare condition where blood builds up more quickly than it can come out. It is unpleasant but is not dangerous, and is treated by repeating the uterine aspiration procedure. This condition occurs in about o.1% of procedures.
Excessive bleeding or hemorrhage. Occurs in about 0.1% of procedures. It is sometimes caused by failure of the uterus to contract or by retained tissue. Usually this can be controlled by medications in the clinic. If heavy bleeding cannot be controlled in the clinic, transfer to hospital would be required.
Injury to the uterus or other internal organs occurs in less than 0.1% of procedures. Transfer to a hospital and surgery to repair the injury may be required. Removal of the uterus is required in approximately 1 in 10,000 procedures.
Allergic reaction to any of the medications given to you, or to latex or other materials in the clinic. Most reactions can be treated in the clinic. A very severe reaction would require transfer to a hospital.
The risk of death related to surgical abortion is about 1 in 1,000,000. Most deaths are related to general anaesthesia or other medical circumstances. The risk of death during pregnancy and childbirth is ten times greater.
Medication Abortion
Retained tissue (some pregnancy tissue is left in the uterus). This occurs more frequently in medication abortions. Sometimes the uterus is unable to expel the tissue and further medical care is necessary.
Continued pregnancy or failed abortion. There is a 2-5% failure rate with these medications and if they have failed to induce an abortion the doctor will discuss a treatment plan with you.
Excessive bleeding or hemorrhage. It is sometimes caused by failure of the uterus to contract or by retained tissue. As this will be happening outside the clinic, you should contact the clinic if you are experiencing hemorrhage, and you may need to proceed to the hospital for medical care.
Infection in the uterus occurs rarely. You may need antibiotics to manage the infection.
Allergic reaction to any of the medications given to you can rarely occur. A very severe reaction would require visit to a hospital.
The risk of death related to abortion is about 1 in 1,000,000. Most deaths are related to excessive bleeding. The risk of death during pregnancy and childbirth is ten times greater

How Can LGBT Parents Start Their Surrogacy Journey
Starting a family through surrogacy can be a fulfilling yet complex journey for LGBT parents. In this guide, we’ll break down the essential steps, highlight how to find the right support and discuss the role of agencies in Calgary, Vancouver, and Montreal that cater to the unique needs of LGBT couples. Surrogacy can provide a safe and structured path to parenthood, with legal and emotional support along the way.
Understanding Surrogacy for LGBT Parents
Surrogacy allows same-sex couples and LGBT individuals to build families through a structured process involving a surrogate mother. There are two main types of surrogacy: gestational and traditional. Gestational surrogacy is typically preferred, as the surrogate has no genetic link to the child, making legal arrangements easier. For LGBT parents, particularly gay male couples, gestational surrogacy offers a safe way to have a biologically related child through the help of an egg donor.
Why Surrogacy Is Popular Among LGBT Parents
With advancements in fertility and surrogacy support, many LGBT couples are choosing surrogacy over other options, such as adoption. Surrogacy for LGBT parents allows one partner to be genetically related to the child, which can be important for family identity and heritage. Additionally, surrogacy offers LGBT parents a greater level of control over the process, including selecting a surrogate and having involvement from pregnancy through birth.
How Do LGBT Parents Start Their Surrogacy Journey?
Starting this journey requires careful planning and a solid support system. Here are some essential steps to help guide LGBT parents:
Research
Look into local and international surrogacy laws, as regulations vary by country and province. Canada, for example, has specific rules, including restrictions on compensating surrogates beyond expenses.
Financial Planning
Surrogacy can be costly due to medical, legal, and agency fees. Budgeting from the beginning is crucial, as this will include costs for finding a surrogate, medical expenses, and legal documentation.
Choosing the Right Agency
Selecting an experienced agency can make the journey smoother. Agencies provide services from surrogate matching to medical and legal assistance. In Canada, agencies in Calgary, Vancouver, and Montreal specialize in LGBT surrogacy services.
Legal Counsel
Surrogacy requires a clear legal framework. An attorney specializing in family law or surrogacy can help draft necessary contracts, especially regarding the surrogate’s rights and the intended parents’ parental rights.
Emotional Support
This journey can be emotionally challenging, so finding support from family, friends, or support groups specifically for LGBT parents can make a difference.
Choosing a Surrogacy Agency in Calgary, Vancouver, or Montreal
Finding a supportive agency is key to a positive surrogacy experience. Canada is home to various agencies that support LGBT families, providing essential services for each stage of the journey.
Surrogacy Agency in Calgary: Calgary-based agencies are known for their comprehensive services, including surrogate matching and coordination with clinics. These agencies often work closely with local healthcare providers to ensure seamless medical care.
Surrogacy Agency in Vancouver: Vancouver agencies are popular for their commitment to ethical practices and support for LGBT families. They offer resources for legal guidance and provide a supportive community for surrogates and intended parents alike.
Surrogacy Agency in Montreal: Montreal-based agencies provide bilingual support and offer a range of services, including surrogate matching, legal aid, and post-birth support. Montreal’s agencies may also have connections with U.S.-based partners, offering additional flexibility for LGBT parents.
How to Find the Right Surrogate
The process of matching with a surrogate is one of the most important steps. Here are factors to consider:
Compatibility
Finding a surrogate who shares similar values and expectations can create a positive experience. Open communication about the process, medical appointments, and involvement is essential.
Location
Working with a surrogate within your province or a nearby location can simplify logistics and reduce travel-related stress.
Health and Medical History
A surrogate’s health history is vital to ensuring a safe pregnancy. Agencies often perform health screenings, but intended parents may want to review additional health background details.
Emotional Stability
Surrogacy is a unique experience, and finding a surrogate who is emotionally prepared for this journey is crucial.
Benefits of Working with an Agency
Agencies play a central role in guiding intended parents through each stage of surrogacy. Here’s how they support LGBT families:
Legal Support: Agencies assist with legal contracts and ensure all documents comply with Canadian laws.
Screening and Matching: Agencies help screen surrogates and find the right match for the intended parents.
Counseling Services: Emotional support is often available through agencies, both for surrogates and intended parents, helping them navigate the surrogacy process with confidence.
Medical Coordination: Agencies work closely with fertility clinics, coordinating appointments and handling medical arrangements.
Important Considerations: Surrogacy Laws in Canada
Canada has strict surrogacy regulations, as commercial surrogacy is not allowed. Surrogates can only be compensated for specific expenses, making it crucial for intended parents to be aware of what is legally permissible. Working with an experienced agency in Calgary, Vancouver, or Montreal ensures that all steps are compliant with local laws and protects both the surrogate and intended parents.
Costs Involved in Surrogacy
Although Canada’s surrogacy costs are typically lower than in the United States, the process can still be expensive. Costs include:
Agency Fees: Agencies charge fees for their services, including surrogate matching and counseling.
Medical Costs: IVF procedures, medical exams, and hospital visits are typically covered by the intended parents.
Legal Fees: Hiring a lawyer to draft and review contracts is essential for protecting the rights of both parties.
Miscellaneous Expenses: Additional costs, such as travel, pregnancy-related expenses for the surrogate, and other supportive services, may also apply.
Emotional Support for LGBT Parents
Surrogacy can be an emotional journey, and LGBT parents often face unique challenges. Many surrogacy agencies offer counseling services to support intended parents and help them process the emotional aspects of surrogacy. Additionally, support groups specifically for LGBT parents can provide a sense of community and understanding, as well as tips for handling questions or concerns from family and friends.

Conclusion
In conclusion, embarking on a surrogacy journey as LGBT parents is both an exciting and complex process. With the right preparation, a supportive agency, and a clear understanding of the legal and financial aspects, LGBT individuals and couples can successfully navigate this path to parenthood. Working with a trusted agency, whether in Calgary, Vancouver, or Montreal, can provide the expertise and resources needed for a positive surrogacy experience. KPMG audits the nursing homes it advises on how to beat audits
Tomorrow (May 10), I’m in VANCOUVER for a keynote at the Open Source Summit and a book event for Red Team Blues at Heritage Hall and on Thurs (May 11), I’m in CALGARY for Wordfest.
Auditors are capitalism’s lubricants, who keep the gears of finance capital smoothly a-whirl, allowing investors to move their money in and out of companies without having to go pore over their books and walk through their facilities. Without auditors, the gears of capitalism would grind themselves to dust:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/02/18/ink-stained-wretches/#countless
If you’d like an essay-formatted version of this thread to read or share, here’s a link to it on pluralistic.net, my surveillance-free, ad-free, tracker-free blog:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/05/09/dingo-babysitter/#maybe-the-dingos-ate-your-nan
Unfortunately for capitalism, auditing is irredeemably broken. The Big Four auditors (PWC, EY, Deloitte and KPMG) have merged to monopoly, becoming “too big to fail” and “too big to jail.” These four gigantic firms have spun up fantastically lucrative “consulting” divisions that advise companies on how to cheat on their audits and attain incredible (paper) gains. The work of these “consultants” is worth far more than the accounting and auditing jobs the companies do, and the weaker the audits are, the more profitable the consulting is:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/06/04/aaronsw/#crooked-ref
This crisis has been a long time brewing. Back in 2001, the accounting/consulting giant Arthur Andersen was at the center of Enron’s fraud, which lit $11B in shareholder capital on fire. Enron had been making everyday people angry for years, engineering rolling blackouts and incredible energy-price gouging, but no one cares about working peoples’ complaints. By contrast, stealing $11B from rich people was something the authorities couldn’t ignore. They gave Andersen the death penalty, trying to teach the surviving accounting firms a lesson about what happens when you fuck with plutes.
But those other firms learned the wrong lesson: the collapse of Andersen was so disruptive that it soon became clear that the authorities would never take another giant consulting firm down, no matter how egregious its conduct was. They doubled down on crime, and then doubled down again.
It’s hard to pick a winner in the Big Four Accounting Firm Corruption Olympics, but KPMG is a strong contender, with a long history of just being monumentally inept and wrong. Back when Enron was unspooling, KPMG devoted itself to threatening people who linked to its website “without a license to do so”:
https://web.archive.org/web/20020207141547/http://chris.raettig.org/email/jnl00040.html
A couple years later, they declared war on wifi, trying to convince normies that wireless networks were an existential risk to human civilization:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/2885339.stm
But there’s not much money in wifi scare stories or licenses to link. KPMG are good dialectical materialists, devoted to money over ideology, and boy did they figure out some wild ways to make money. For one thing, they figured out that they could get more accountants certified by cheating…on ethics exams:
https://www.marketwatch.com/story/the-kpmg-cheating-scandal-was-much-more-widespread-than-originally-thought-2019-06-18
KPMG’s top managers bribed regulators to give them the answer-sheets for ethics exams. What did they bribe those public employees with? Jobs at KPMG:
https://www.pogo.org/investigation/2020/01/how-accountants-took-washingtons-revolving-door-to-a-criminal-extreme
There’s hardly a month that goes by without another KPMG scandal somewhere in the world, with enormous monetary and social fallout. During the lockdowns, Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government outsourced the creation and maintenance of ArriveCAN (a contact tracing app for people who entered Canada) to a grifter called GC Strategies, who billed millions for their services. GC Strategies didn’t do any work — instead, they paid KPMG $1,000-$1,500 day to hire freelancers to build the app. The app itself was a catastrophic failure, and that failure didn’t just embarrass the government — it also failed to protect Canadians during a once-in-a-century global pandemic. KPMG raked off a 30% commission:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/01/31/mckinsey-and-canada/#comment-dit-beltway-bandits-en-canadien
In the USA, KPMG helped Microsoft work up a radioactively illegal tax-evasion scheme. Microsoft poured the millions it saved by cheating on its taxes into dark-money operations that lobbied to defund the IRS so that KPMG and Microsoft could cook up even more illegal tax-evasion schemes:
https://www.propublica.org/article/the-irs-decided-to-get-tough-against-microsoft-microsoft-got-tougher
But KPMG doesn’t content itself with screwing over everyday people and rotting our democratic institutions — it also engages in the dangerous business of helping billionaires steal from millionaires. KPMG was the auditor that signed off on the scam “oil company” Miller Energy Partners, a fraud that operated for years thanks to KPMG’s rubber-stamp on its crooked books:
https://www.desmog.com/2021/06/03/miller-energy-kpmg-auditors-oil-fraud/
The company was run by serial fraudsters with long rapsheets for stealing millions. They staffed their C-suite with executives from disgraced companies that had been busted for running Ponzi schemes, issuing press releases praising those execs’ “proven track records in raising capital.” KPMG ignored every red flag, ignored the hundreds of millions in fraud on the books — and when the whole thing came crashing down, the responsible KPMG partner kept his job for years, until retiring with a full and fat pension.
More recently, KPMG made millions by confidently certifying the stability of a large regional bank, assuring investors and depositors that it was managing its risk and could be trusted. The name of the client that KPMG was so bullish on will be familiar to you: Silicon Valley Bank:
https://www.wsj.com/articles/kpmg-faces-scrutiny-for-audits-of-svb-and-signature-bank-42dc49dd
KPMG epitomizes the idea of Too Big To Fail and Too Big to Jail. Despite being at the center of virtually every major finance scandal, it continues to thrive and grow. Remember the Carillion bust, in which billions went up in smoke and swathes of privatized government services vanished overnight? Not only did KPMG sign off on fraudulent Carillion books, but it escaped fines for doing so — and got paid to help administer Carillion’s bankruptcy:
https://www.reuters.com/business/finance/uk-watchdog-fines-kpmg-24-mln-over-carillion-regenersis-audits-2022-07-25/
Despite this, KPMG continues to find willing buyers for its services. After all, when the sector is dominated by four giant, lavishly corrupt firms, there’s not much choice in the matter:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/11/29/great-andersens-ghost/#mene-mene-bezzle
This is bad news for the investor class, of course, but it’s even worse news for the people who rely on the services that KPMG certifies, even as it helps grifters destroy them. Every kind of business relies on audits, from transit to aviation to day-care to eldercare.
Here’s a scary one for you: in Australia, the job of auditing residential eldercare homes’ compliance with safety and anti-abuse rules has been outsourced to KPMG. While KPMG earns a mid-sized fortune from these audits, it earns far more advising the owners of residential aged care homes on how to beat those audits:
https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2023/may/04/firm-performing-australian-aged-care-audit-also-charging-providers-for-expertise
KPMG says that the division that ensures the safety and dignity of elderly people is firewalled off from the division that advises companies on how to spend as little as possible on that safety and dignity — but KPMG also went to great lengths to keep the fact that it was selling services to both sides a secret.
Once the secret got out, an anonymous KPMG spokesmonster said, “When considering a request to perform an audit, we undertake a detailed process to ensure the engagement is free of conflicts.”
It’s hypothetically possible that this is true, but anyone who believes anything KPMG says is a sucker. The company’s rap-sheet goes back decades. This is, after all, a company that cheated on its ethics exams.
Catch me on tour with Red Team Blues in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, DC, Gaithersburg, Oxford, Hay, Manchester, Nottingham, London, and Berlin!
[Image ID: Two business-suited male figures seen side on; each has a bomb for a head, and each is holding a lit lighter that has ignited the other's fuse. Each bomb is wearing a green accountant's eyeshade. In the background is a fiery mushroom cloud. They wear KPMG logos on their lapels.]
