2023 Round-Up: Films Acquired in 2023

incredible year for home video releases and i'm thrilled to have gotten a sliver of stuff released this year among this bounty. i can't wait to dig into the ones from 2023 that i haven't yet, most specifically From Hollywood to Heaven (Indicator), Vinegar Syndrome's Lost Picture Show (VS), World Noir Volume 1 (Radiance), the Cinderella 4K that undoes the damage job done by the Blu-ray, Barbarella 4K (Arrow), The Graceful Brute (Radiance), Dream Life (CIP), Vengeance is Mine (The Film Desk), Door (Third Window), Spacked Out (Kani), Fake It So Real (Factory 25). Home video releases are in an unprecedented niche boom, with so many great labels having cropped up in recent years and doing incredible restorative work and bringing attention to countless films from around the world and from all periods of cinema. i don't think there's any better time to be a lover of film for this reason imo.

also thanks to my partner's buying habits, i've gotten to watch things i haven't bought myself. Criterion's 4K of Lost Highway, Vinegar Syndrome's 4K of eXistenZ, and Arrow's 4K of Psycho III were all transformative experiences. the work done to do right by these films is just unbelievable.

i know we keep saying “for us jews it’s still october 7th” but from the bottom of my heart i cannot process the fact that it’s been more than 8 months. literally my brain has blocked out all of it. i know logically so much of my life has changed in these 8 months but every single change, every good or bad experience, has been tainted with the massacre and the war since. i cannot feel normal, i can’t even process time normally. and i am a jew in the Diaspora. i can’t even imagine what it’s like for israelis, jewish or otherwise. geez.

After I finish the skull mini quilts, I'll be cleaning up my sewing room in preparation for panel quilts. November 1st, the commission options will be reduced to pins/magnets, pine tree wallhangings, and rag quilts. December 1st, commissions will be closed until Spring 2025, probably in April or May.

If you want to commission me, now is the time to do it.

The pins I make can serve as "ornaments" on the pine tree wallhangings. The pine trees are perfect for displaying your own pin collection, as well. It's what I use my own for. You can also sew favorite buttons on there for much the same purpose.

Rag quilts are a fun and quick type of quilt I can make on a lower budget because all the quilting is done during the sewing part. They're three layers of fabric, minimal piecing, made using large pieces, and have a good amount of weight to them. If you live in a cold area, or want to get a quilt for someone living in a colder region, three layers of flannel are an excellent option. They can be made with quilting cotton as well, which is heavier than flannel, but costs twice as much. Here's one rag quilt I've made. The reason I don't keep them in stock is due to their bulk and my extreme lack of storage space.

These are the same quilt, flipped over. The exposed edges are why it's called a rag quilt.
