"Worked my way down through Grannvale," he said. "Beat everyone there, so I kept going southwest. I probably would have started moving up through Agustria if Sigurd hadn't beaten me."

Her eyebrows lifted. "If you're from a Crusader lineage, what were you doing as a prizefighter?"

Chulainn felt a smile cross his face. The noblewomen in their fugitive army would have found a more tactful way to ask that, but he appreciated how she cut straight towards the answer she wanted. "Od gave me the gift of bladecraft. I never figured out how there was a straight line between that and my worth as a ruler. But there is a very clear line between my skill with a sword and my worth as an arena fighter." He shrugged his shoulder again. "I chose the more honest course."
