grief is fucking terrifying.
it covers everything in
such a massive layer of pain.
of confusion. of rage.
i can't breathe through it.
one minute i'm sitting in
my childhood bedroom
and the next, i can't see.
i wave my hand in front of my face
and no one greets me in return.
i don't know who i am without her.

x files fanfiction taught me how to write in so many ways, and i think so much of the rhythm of decades of prose has worked its way into my bones

.
writing is great because it'll take you a week to write a 7k word chapter, and then you'll think of a scene in the following chapter & have written out 7k words within a day
anyway we are officially over 50k works with theseus's guide yaaay . i think my plan at this point is to finish off this big climax, then go back to edit all the previous chapters, give em the final sauce, and start posting
aaaaaa i really wanna talk to folks about it lol ......... there's so much stanley & family shenanigans i'm excited about . i wanna play with folks aaaaa come play in my sandbox with meeeeeee

"A dyke, according to geology, is a sheet of magma born in a fracture. Dykes are best understood as the veins of a volcano, coursing hot and varicose toward the surface to erupt. Because of this, dykes are always younger than the body of rock in which they’ve made their home. Born differently than the mother rock, they make their presence known in rebel coloration: black against white, striped against mottled, crystal against sand. Geologists consider dykes intrusive formations, in part because they were formed underground until exposed."

I still haven’t found my ground again in my writing, but I’ll start posting it again regardless. I shall expose my shame for the world to see, thank you (and apologies in advance for poor writing bits)

I wish someone would take Weekes to a like. Intro to theater writing class. Just like. Anything to explain the concept of pacing, narrative set-up/payoff, the importance of foreshadowing, etc to them. Because I feel like they have good ideas, terrible execution.
I'm saying this into your inbox bc I, too, often find that a solid 70-80% of what I dislike about Inquisition is often explained instantly by "Trick wrote this".
that's super interesting because i barely know what's going on in dai half the time so i can't really identify the specific weak points in the overarching narratives, most of my personal issues are with smaller picture stuff and the way they write dialogue/characters. i did think the short story i read in tevinter nights that they wrote had pretty awkward pacing though lol, i think i actually wrote that down somewhere when i was trying to get through the entire book for veilguard homework. then again, i usually think gaider's characters are fine/good and his tie-in novels were INSANELY bad.
i massively agree with the good ideas, weak execution thing though... they have some really good moments (solas' low approval cutscene is probably the best companion cutscene in the game imo, the bull boss/bas payoff is FUN and smart) but for every one of those good moments there are tons where it feels like they've trapped themselves by being overambitious. cole had soo much going on that he just kind of ends up being nothing, solas is hard to connect to because he spends too much time foreshadowing or saying things that will be ironic later, etc etc

I do think an ideal translation team would need to have at least three people, and only two of them absolutely *must* speak both languages.
You need someone who's better at the original language but speaks the target language (to identify subtleties and cultural references), you need someone who is better at the target language but speaks the original (to make sure the initial translation makes sense), and you need a proofreader who has some expertise in prose in the target language (to make sure the concerns of the first two are being met in the final draft, and determine if there are any cases where a better-fitting word in the target language fits for words with multiple definitions)
and all three of these people need to be in some kind of communication with each other, back and forth until all parties can come to some consensus.

in which goro akechi is still unable to die due to the whims of others
context for people who don’t recognize the fandragons: >doc runs status quo; it’s an organized militia/strike force >the shadow lookin’ thing behind goro is loki; it’s essentially a spirit contracted to him >the location shown is one of the final dungeons in persona 5 >doc’s basically a necromancer (very much Not a real doctor)
part 1 | part 2 [these are not my dragons nor my lore; they belong to a friend]

in class we read the effluent engine and it wasn't 'well-written' but it was short and sweet. then i picked up a short story collection to try and do some extra reading for the end of term assignment and it was- okay hang on this post was going to culminate in me being mean and comparing her work to the dragon age tie-in novels (they're bad don't read them unless you're really sick in the head) but then i went to her wikipedia bibliography and saw she actually wrote a mass effect tie-in novel so lol lmao

It is somewhat difficult being someone who isn't a practicing writer, meaning I haven't written anything beyond what I'd consider warmup sketches in several years, but also can't divorce myself enough from the craft to like... have a normal experience with a book.

Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros is literal hot garbage and I will die on this hill.
#like it’s literally one of the worst constructed/written books I have ever encountered#how on earth could Yarros be married to a 20+ year military vet and yet still not even understand the most basic military concepts#it’s honestly astounding how brain dead her characters are#the way she writes makes it abundantly obvious that she thinks her readers are a bunch of idiots#who need every single story theme and element hand fed to them#the introduction of Varrish was just utter bullshit#she could have painted ‘VILLAIN’ on his forehead and it would’ve been less obvious#please tell us again how smart your main character is while she proceeds to do the dumbest shit I’ve ever seen#‘oh why won’t xaden trust me with rebellion secrets even though I basically announce my suspicions of the empire at every turn?’#idk violet maybe it’s bc you won’t do the mind training they’ve been telling you to do#so you’re constantly vulnerable to the mindreader YOU KNOW PERSONALLY#maybe that’s why no one tells you anything???#also holy shit her being like ‘I have to be careful and not let the empire know I’m questioning my duties’#and then immediately crashing into a scribe meeting to request more red flag reading??#like??? was she kicked in the head???#also the dragons stating multiple times that humans are basically like ants to them and they don’t care if they live or die#but simultaneously having to somehow be subserveant to the military????#bitch why weren’t you all enslaved by the dragons#this is such nonsense#also her prose is ass#come back when you can tell the difference between parse and parcel Rebecca#yeah a lot of my complaints are iron flame related#but that’s just bc it really hit home how bad this all is with the second book#net zero improvement#way to fail downwards Rebecca#ALSO!! what evil empire would conscript their enemies children into the one branch of their military where they get DRAGONS and SUPERPOWERS#like what??!!#in what world#what military would be so afraid of a new rebellion that they conscript the people with deep emotional ties to the old rebellion???#if real militaries worked this way there would be no more war bc we’d all be dead

INTRO & WARNINGS
Hello there, my name is Rosemary. I use she/her pronouns. I'm over 18 (23 y/o), but this is not a typical NSFT blatant explicit blog.
This is a side-blog for curating content that reminds me of The Gothic. Specifically Gothic Romances, with a heroine lead. Fucked up coming-of-age tales, with a fantastical, dramatic and historical edge to them. This blog will include unnerving themes and imagery, so please leave if you're sensitive for your own benefit.
This is a side-blog, so I will not be able to be mutuals or start conversations. If you'd like to get in touch with me, do send me an ask! And if you'd like to talk more, I'll reach out to you through my personal account.
CW List, Tag Directory and Media Inspo after the cut.
LIST OF SENSITIVE TOPICS
abduction, blood, cannibalism (#devour), excessive/ gratuitous violence, gore, psychological torment, supernatural monsters and elements, unhealthy + toxic relationships, etc
These topics will not be tagged individually.
You are strongly advised to leave this blog if you are uncomfortable with these topics.
You are responsible for your experience on Tumblr. I cannot physically stop you from following so it's your judgement for your own sake.
TAG DIRECTORY
#actual advice — The Gothic explores and highlights human flaws and points of conflict. But they say a character flaw is just a character’s strength taken too far. A trait in reverse. So, if you reverse all of these constructive, helpful observations and just see them from another angle… these keys to recovery end up as destructive tragedies. And Gothic stories are often the biggest tragedies there are.
