"MARY POPPINS" (1964) Review
"MARY POPPINS" (1964) Review Looking at the 1964 movie about a magical nanny, one would be amazed that it took nearly 20 years to make it. I suspect that many did not predict it would become critically acclaimed. But if one is ever interested in the behind-the-scenes production of the film, one would have to read about it . . . or watch the 2013 movie, "SAVING MR. BANKS". I am here to discuss the actual movie, "MARY POPPINS".
Based upon a selection of short stories written by P.L. Travers, "MARY POPPINS" tells the story of how two Edwardian Age children named Jane and Michael Banks, who request a particular kind of nanny after their latest one quits her job after enduring one too many pranks from the two siblings. Their father, a banker named George Banks, is too busy with his career and projecting the image of an ideal Englishman in order to pay attention to them. Their mother, although slightly more concerned about their welfare, is either caught up in the Suffregette Movement or too busy adhering to their father's demands. After the departure of their latest nanny, Katie Nanna, Jane and Michael write a letter describing what they want in a new nanny. But Mr. Banks has different ideas - a nanny who is an effective disciplinarian - and tears up their letter. However, the children's letter magically reaches a woman named Mary Poppins. She appears at the Banks' home the following morning to apply (or appoint herself) as Jane and Michael's new nanny. Despite his initial reservation, Mr. Banks is impressed by Mary Poppins' firm manner and hires her. With the help of friend named Bert, Mary Poppins introduces the Banks children to a new magical world. In doing so, she also manages to shake up Mr. Banks, his household and his livelihood. I first saw "MARY POPPINS" as a child and immediately fell in love with it. For years, I have regarded the movie as one of the highlights of my childhood and one of the best films to be released from the Disney Studios. But recent criticism of Mary Poppins as a sugar-coated character of no substance, and of the film as an infantilization of P.L. Travers' work and vision has led me to wonder if my childhood opinion of "MARY POPPINS" may have been overrated. After all, I had spent years judging the movie from the viewpoint of a child. How would I judge this movie from an adult who has spent the last ten to twenty years viewing movies with a critical eye? As many have recently pointed out, the Disney Studios made a good number of changes to Travers' stories. They also left out a great deal. To point out "all" of the changes and deletions would require an essay. And I am not interested in writing such an essay. Were there any aspects of "MARY POPPINS" that I disliked? Honestly? No. But there are aspects of the movie's production that I wish could have been handled in a slightly different manner. For quite some time, I never understood why "MARY POPPINS" was shot at the studio's Burbank lot, instead of at England's Pinewood Studios, where 1963's "DR. SYN, ALIAS THE SCARECROW" and "THE THREE LIVES OF THOMASINA" were filmed. Like the two 1963 films, "MARY POPPINS" mainly featured a cast of British actors. Only four cast members were American born - Dick Van Dyke, Ed Wynn, Jane Darwell and Reta Shaw. I feel that if the movie had been shot in Great Britain, its exterior shots of the Banks and Uncle Albert's neighborhoods and the City of London would have featured a bit more details - add more oomph to the movie's visual British style. As for Tony Walton's costume designs, I must admit that I found them rather charming, if not particularly mind blowing. However . . . I could not help but wonder why Mary Poppins' skirts seemed a tad short for 1909-10 fashions. And I also end up wondering why Winifred Banks' wardrobe seemed so limited. Unless I am mistaken, actress Glynis Johns wore only three costumes in "MARY POPPINS". In fact, I suspect she wore one particular costume twice. And Walton designed her costumes either in yellow, powder blue or a combination of both colors. Although I found Johns' costumes rather charming, they also struck me as a bit limited. Although the film's production designs struck me as a bit limited, I cannot help but admire the film's cinematography and visual style. Edward Colman earned a much deserved nomination for his colorful and sharp photography for the film. Colman's photography also enhanced Tony Walton's pthe matte paintings created by Peter Ellenshaw. Since "MARY POPPINS" was filmed on the Disney Studios backlot in Burbank, Walt Disney and director Robert Stevenson not only had to depend upon Carroll Clark and William H. Tuntke's art direction, but also the visual effects and special effects teams. But "MARY POPPINS" was set in Edwardian London. And since Disney, Stevenson and the film's crew could not film in Great Britain, the production team had to rely on Ellenshaw's beautiful and colorful matte paintings to add to the film's visual look for its setting, as shown in the following images:
"MARY POPPINS" may not have been free of any flaws, but it still remains one of my favorite movies of all time. I had earlier pointed out that some critics have pointed out the movie's failure to be completely faithful to Travers' stories. Honestly? I do not care. It would have been near impossible for any screenwriter to be completely faithful. Travers did not write a single novel. She wrote a series of short stories and novellas. And since it is impossible for a screenplay to be completely faithful to a novel or stage play, what on earth made these critics believe Bill Walsh and Don DaGradi could have been completely faithful to Travers' stories and still fashion a single narrative for the film? Ridiculous! Personally, I am amazed that Walsh and DaGradi managed to wring a single narrative out of so many short stories in the first place. That must have not been an easy task. As the 2013 movie, "SAVING MR. BANKS", had pointed out, Mary Poppins' purpose within the Banks' household was to save George Banks and his relationship with his children. And she did this in the most interesting way. Mary Poppins used her role as the children's nanny to indirectly affect the family's patriarch. Instead of utilizing traditional means to care for the children, Mary Poppins exposed Jane and Michael to her world - using magic to clean the nursery, an excursion into a sidewalk chalk drawing of the English countryside, and an afternoon tea party on the ceiling with Mary Poppins' Uncle Albert. The children's revelations of their activities naturally shook up Mr. Banks, along with the magical nanny's subversive and cheerful impact upon the Banks' household. Unable to accept Mary Poppins' impact upon his family and servants, Mr. Banks threatened to fire her. And this is where Mary Poppins, as the film's trickster, pulled off a pièce de résistance. Before Mr. Banks could fire her, Mary Poppins managed to manipulate him into agreeing to take the children on an outing to his bank. However, the night before this outing, she decides to sing a song to the children about an old beggar woman who sits on the steps of St Paul's Cathedral, selling bags of breadcrumbs to passers-by for twopence a bag,so that they can feed the many pigeons that surround her. Between the song and the children spotting the Bird Woman on their way to their father's bank set in motion the chaos that followed and Mary Poppins' plan to save Mr. Banks' relationship with his family. Brilliant. If the narrative that Walsh and DaGradi had created from Travers' short stories had struck me as brilliant, the songs written by Robert and Richard Sherman seemed even more so. Aside from the performances, the Sherman Brothers' songs seemed to be the heart and soul of the film. If someone was to ask me which song was my favorite, I honestly could not answer that question. Aside from two of them, I found most of their songs very memorable . . . even to this day. One of their songs - "Chim Chim Cher-ee" - was nominated for the Best Song Oscar and won. However, I must admit to being surprised that the beautiful and rather haunting "Feed the Birds" failed to garner any kind of nomination or award. Perhaps it was not as fully appreciated back in 1964-65 as it is today. Both "Jolly Holiday" and </i>"Step in Time"</i> were not only entertaining songs, but they also provided the background for some very entertaining dance numbers. The first featured the very agile Dick Van Dyke and a quartet of animated pigeons. I found this dance sequence both funny and a joy to watch. You have to see it to believe it. As for the second song, it was featured in a show stopping dance routine that involved Van Dyke, Julie Andrews . . . and chimney sweeps. Between the song, the dance routines choreographed by the husband-and-wife team of Marc Breaux and Dee Dee Wood, and the London rooftops background, the entire sequence is one of the film's highlights. Another addition to the magic of "MARY POPPINS" proved to be its cast. The movie featured excellent voice performances in the chalk picture sequence from the likes of J. Pat O'Malley, Marni Nixon, Dallas McKinnon, and Alan Napier. Even Julie Andrews and David Tomlinson also provided voice performances. The supporting and cameo performances featured in this film were marvelous. The movie included excellent performances from Reginald Owen as the cankerous Admiral Boom; Elsa Lancaster as the disgruntled Katie Nanny; Arthur Treacher as the kindly Constable Jones; Arthur Malet as Mr. Dawes Jr., one of the board members of the bank that employed Mr. Banks; Hermione Baddeley and Reta Shaw as Ellen and Mrs. Brill, the Banks' gregarious maid and cook; and a poignant cameo by Jane Darwell, who was convinced by Disney to make a brief appearance as the Bird Lady. "MARY POPPINS" marked the second teaming of Karen Dotrice and Matthew Garber, who portrayed the magical nanny's charges, Jane and Michael Banks. It seemed pretty simple to me why Disney had used this pair in three movies. Not only were they were first-rate actors who more than kept up with the likes of Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke and David Tomlinson; they also had a great screen chemistry. In P.L. Travers' books, Mrs. Banks was an easily intimidated woman who could barely maintain control of her household. In this movie, Mrs. Banks was a woman more occupied by her suffragette activities than her children. And she was portrayed by actress Glynis Johns. The latter gave a marvelous performance as a woman who seemed to hid her inability to protect her children from their father's neglect with a few sympathetic words and her own brand of neglect. If I had to select the most complex character in this movie, it would have to be Mr. George Banks of 17 Cherry Tree Lane and the Dawes Tomes Mousley Grubbs Fidelity Fiduciary Bank. Thanks to actor David Tomlinson in his first appearance in a Disney film, movie audiences were treated to a superb performance. Tomlinson skillfully transformed George Banks from a highly driven and disciplined man who was obsessed with order to an affectionate family man who had found a new lease on life. It almost seems criminal that the actor never received any kind of acting nomination for his performance. Unlike Tomlinson, Dick Van Dyke did receive a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor, thanks to his performance as Bert, Mary Poppins' closest friend and jack-of-all-trades. Whenever Van Dyke's performance in "MARY POPPINS" is mentioned, people seemed to comment on his Cockney accent. Granted, it was not perfect. But I have never considered it to be a travesty. I have noticed that whenever he spoke words with a long vowell, his Cockney accent seemed exaggerated. Otherwise, I had no problems. And if someone like Sean Connery can win an Oscar for portraying an Irish immigrant with a Scots accent, I see no reason why Van Dyke's portrayal of Bert should only be condemned for a questionable Cockney accent. Besides . . . accent aside, Van Dyke gave a superb performance in so many other ways. He captured Bert's charm, wit and a slight talent for manipulation with such perfection. Van Dyke was also given the opportunity to portray another character in the film - namely Mr. Banks' elderly boss, Mr. Dawes Senior of the Dawes Tomes Mousley Grubbs Fidelity Fiduciary Bank. How often does one find an actor in his late 30s effectively portraying a 90-something year-old man? In my personal experience, very rarely. And to put the cherry on the icing, Van Dyke was never criticized for his British accent, while portraying Mr. Dawes . . . for good reason. Although there have been hints of his talent as a song-and-dance man in his first television series, "THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW", this movie really provided an opportunity to convey how truly talented he could be. Julie Andrews managed to capture the big prize for her portrayal of the film's leading character, Mary Poppins. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress. Whereas many were distracted from Van Dyke's performance because of his accent, others have lamented on how Andrews' portrayal of the magical nanny seemed a far cry from her literary version. Granted, the latter was a plain-looking woman, somewhat more pompous and strict. Although Andrews' Mary Poppins was more beautiful looking and somewhat warmer, she could still be quite sharp-tongued - especially when disciplining Jane and Michael. Andrews also did a great job in conveying Mary Poppins' no nonsense behavior and massive talent for emotional manipulation. That one scene in which the magical nanny manipulated Mr. Banks into taking his children on an outing to his bank was just a joy to watch. Thanks to her skillful and award winning performance, Andrews managed to convey the reason why Mary Poppins is regarded as a trickster. What else can I say about "MARY POPPINS"? Over fifty years have passed since the movie's initial release and it is still - at least to me - a magical movie to watch. Yes, it had a few flaws. What movie did not? But thanks to P.L. Travers' stories, Robert Stevenson's marvelous direction, Robert and Richard Sherman's music, the movie's visual effects teams and the superb cast led by Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke; "MARY POPPINS" remained timeless and magical as ever.

Scarlet Lady
Architects: Concrete
In addition to proudly presenting an extravagant project featuring architecture, multiple bars and restaurants, a gym, a running track, two pools, a 360-degree lookout, the biggest sunbed in the world, and more… concrete is most proud of designing their first-ever traveling project: The Scarlet Lady cruise ship for Virgin Voyages.
Scarlet Lady is ready for her guests to arrive and will soon set sail in the Caribbean. Three additional ships will follow the same blueprint; the second, called Valliant Lady, is almost ready to explore the Mediterranean.
concrete completely changed the blueprint of traditional cruise ships by adding an actual running track and a two-story F&B pavilion as the beating heart of the Aquatic Club. The red loop floats elegantly over the upper deck and functions not just as a promenade, but also as a visual connection between the Perch at the very top of the ship and the Athletic & Aquatic Club on the decks below. It is the perfect spot to see and be seen.
” Scarlet Lady is set to make waves, challenge preconceptions, and possibly make cruising cool. ”
quote from an article about Virgin Voyages from Wallpaper*
Athletic Club Designed with the aesthetic of athletic social clubs of the past, our club incorporates not just an active Training Camp room and boxing classes, but also a basketball court and cold-pressed juice bar. The best of both wellness worlds just a few feet apart. The Athletic Club is where activity meets leisure, and sweat and support mingle. The club extends across both sides of the aft of the ship as an active outdoor lounge and adult playground. Topped by a sundeck, it features the largest daybed at sea as the perfect place on board to sunbathe or gaze at the stars.
Aquatic Club With smooth curves and nautical details, the pool deck has the sophisticated glam of a contemporary superyacht. Whether you’re looking for mornings spent sunbathing on one of the daybeds, or letting last night’s choices fade away as you glide through the water — the pool club is a serene space for ultimate relaxation.
Runway or running track The signature, Virgin-red running track floats over the upper decks of the ship inviting passengers to sprint, skate, or stroll whilst enjoying the best view over the ocean and the ship alike. It is an iconic and unique showstopper, worth changing the blueprint of the ship to make it happen. The luminous graphics will guide your athletic self day and night, and you might catch a glimpse of the all-night party on the crew deck.
Gym & Tonic After working up a sweat or standing around thinking about maybe, possibly picking up the weights, restore yourself by taking a dip in the Wellbeing [a2] Pool. More details on the Wellbeing area will soon be revealed!
B Complex Gym The Gym is divided into two parts to the port side and starboard side of the Gym &Tonic area. The starboard side part offers all you need if you are a workout fanatic and into speed. These spaces are held in cool dark blue and black, the perfect backdrop for all these trained bodies lit in theatrical light. The portside part offers all you need to reveal your inner peace. These light spaces are held in shades of off-white all featuring stunning ocean views.
The Perch Enjoy 360-degree views over the ocean, whilst an extensive red, translucent sunshade protects you from the Caribbean sun and golden bucket showers are available to cool you down quickly with a refreshing splash. The place for yoga, meditation, and stretching, or simply to escape the crowds and treat yourself to the most gorgeous ocean backdrop.
Restaurant Razzle Dazzle – deck 5 This restaurant offers creative surprises inspired by classic comfort foods. The bold interior is based on dazzle camouflage -a type of ship camouflage used extensively in World War I- based on the ability to blend in by standing out. The disruptive pattern is literally covering everything: at the walls and floors it is brought
back in diagonally layouts black and white rubber stripes, in the room dividers the pattern is build up in black powdered steel structures, and even the wooden tables in the center of the restaurant follow the diagonal pattern.
Restaurant Test Kitchen – Deck 6 Inspired by Escoffier’s Ma Cuisine, this laboratory-like restaurant is educational, experiential, and social. Hosting cooking classes and evolving tasting menus, this place is for the curious boundary-pushing foodies on board, one part cooking school, and one part restaurant.
The Test Kitchen restaurant has an eye-catching entryway with a light fixture showing images of herbs and spices that mimic the periodic table. The laboratory-like environment is accented by metallic furniture with greenish leather upholstery, sleek clean lines, custom made metallic open cupboards, and custom made fridges stocked up with storage and a finishing touch of beakers, test tubes, and volumetric flasks in them. The heart of the space forms the 2 live kitchens with bar seatings all around them.
The Scarlet Lady is ready for her guests to arrive and will set sail soon along the Caribbean. Three additional ships will follow the same blueprint, the second ship called the Vaillant Lady is almost ready to explore the Mediterranean.

4 Summer Wedding Shower Ideas We’re Loving
For a summer wedding shower, I love dreaming up the bride’s favorite things about summer. Does she love a good pool day? Try a glamorous summer wedding shower in a cabana at a rooftop pool with a view of the city. Add fun blow up floats and plenty of umbrella drinks to go around. Does her favorite flower bloom in the summer? Look for a local botanical garden or quirky garden brunch spot. Lots of natural textures and brightly colored bloom will set the scene. –Skylar Caitlin, Chancey Charm Houston Wedding Planner
Incorporate a fun build your own sundae bar. Depending on the time of day, guests could go for a sweet treat and what better way than to have an ice cream bar! –Alana Futcher, Chancey Charm Washington DC Wedding Planner
LOVING THIS POST? PIN IT FOR LATER!
There are so many great holidays and events in the summer so capitalize on those! Not only will your guests sometimes have an extra day off, it will be easier to find great decorations. If you love a fancy luncheon, organize a Kentucky Derby themed summer wedding shower with big hats and mint juleps. Head to a lake cabin for a 4th of July weekend “No More Independence” Day bash if you’re more of a laid back bride. –Liz Ise, Chancey Charm Dallas Wedding Planner
Make the menu interesting – instead of light snacks during an afternoon summer wedding shower, utilize the warm summer nights for a delicious Shrimp Boil. Get inside and think outside of the registry. Many couples already have it all – the towels, the dishes, even the matching utensils. Instead of a typical registry, ask the ladies to join you at a DIY studio like ‘AR Workshop’ with locations all around the US. Reserve the workshop for just you and your friends and have each guest purchase a project they are comfortable with that you can later use in your home or better yet, in wedding decor! Shops like this can even customize the lettering stencil to feature your new last name and the final project looks better than something you’d find on Pinterest! –Sarah Duckworth, Chancey Charm Charlotte Wedding Planner
Are you a bride looking for a resource you can trust to help keep you on track as you plan your wedding?

DRIP Zine Lets Coffee Professionals Celebrate Their Sexuality
Today is Valentine’s Day, which means baristas will be pouring an above-average amount of hearts in lattes. And today especially (though really this is an everyday occurrence), should muscle memory kick in and they pour an unrequested heart—one of the three primary latte art shapes, mind you—it will inevitably be misconstrued as some sign on interest by the customer and thus begin awkward series of interactions with a person who has already planned the entire relationship in their head. Based solely upon a foam shape in a cup. Baristas, along with service industry members in general, get objectified on a daily basis. A significant part of their livelihoods, tips, are based solely on being nice and welcome and often gets contorted by many into some grand but subtle gesture of affection. But a new zine is fighting back. Called DRIP, this new print publication exists as a space for members of the specialty coffee community to reclaim their sexuality, and it comes out today.
Created by Coffee People founder Kat Melheim and Amethyst Coffee’s Claudia Campero, DRIP Zine is a submission-based publication where coffee professionals can feel free to explore their illicit sides. Works will include “photography, poetry, short stories, illustrations, and other artwork where we explore how we feel about our bodies, sex, gender, nudity, power, vulnerability, expression, and identity.” And what better way to celebrate this new print venture that with a party, on Valentines of all days?
Tonight in Denver at Amethyst Coffee’s Lakeside location starting at 6:00pm, the DRIP Zine holding a release party, and it will be a night of erotic good times. Included in the night’s festivities includes “Glitter Pussy,” an aphrodisiac signature beverage competition presented in collaboration with Glitter Cat, X-rated Valentines Day card making, and even a little flash. Hand-poked tattoos from custom-made flash by @stickandpeg will be going on all night.
But for those unable to attend the release party, copies of DRIP Zine are available for $15 via the Coffee People Zine website (with the option of donating more). Partial proceeds from sales will go to benefit Planned Parenthood.
Just because today is a manufactured holiday designed solely to separate you from your hard-earned cash via overpriced plants and mass-produced confections doesn’t mean you can’t also treat yourself. Pick up a copy of DRIP Zine today and maybe find out how your fellow coffee professionals are treating themselves (and other consenting adults).

How to Handle Holiday Stress in Dogs
The post How to Handle Holiday Stress in Dogs by Arden Moore appeared first on Dogster. Copying over entire articles infringes on copyright laws. You may not be aware of it, but all of these articles were assigned, contracted and paid for, so they aren’t considered public domain. However, we appreciate that you like the article and would love it if you continued sharing just the first paragraph of an article, then linking out to the rest of the piece on Dogster.com.
The holidays are right around the corner, but your dog is acting anything but jolly. He’s lost the jingle in his step. Gone is his ready-quick grin, the goofy barks and the jubilant dash to fetch a favorite tossed toy. Just like us, holiday stress in dogs can extend past the festive ushering of the new year.
Consider this: Your loyal canine pal is so tuned into you, your emotions and your schedule. But the comforting predictability of the household routine has been upended by your erratic comings and goings, the arrival of a large tree in the living room with don’t-touch ornaments, the smell of oh-so-tempting goodies from the oven and the not-so-welcomed appearance of strange and sometimes obnoxious people referred to as “relatives” by you. That’s a doggone lot to deal with, especially for your confused canine.
Look for these clues of holiday stress in dogs (although they could also be due to a health concern, so consult with your veterinarian):
Boisterous behavior might be a sign of holiday stress in dogs. Photography ©caliburn82 | Thinkstock.
Loss of appetite
Lack of energy and interest
Lip licking and/or yawning
Becoming boisterous or whining
Hiding, cowering or ignoring your “come” calls
Chewing up sofa pillows or comforters that he has left untouched before the holidays
Turning into a Velcro dog, shadowing your every step in the house
Piddling and pooping in the house after years of stellar potty habits
If you don’t address these behavioral changes, the doggie blues can continue after the holidays when you return back to work and the kids head back to school. This is especially true for highly social dogs who welcome the holidays because they know they will get more attention in the forms of petting, cuddling and, especially, treats from you and visitors. Suddenly, they find themselves home alone.
Whether you plan to take a holiday vacation sans your dog or intend to stay home and fill your house with lots of guests, Dogster offers these effective solutions to prevent Yule time from turning into yowl time.
How to ease holiday stress in dogs if you’re taking a vacation without your pup
If you plan to take a dog-free vacation, hire a professional pet sitter or take your dog to a reputable boarding facility. The choice depends on your dog’s health, age, temperament and experience with other dogs.
“Dogs who are shy, quiet and get intimidated by the presence of other dogs or loud barking will likely prefer to be at home,” says Leni Kaplan, D.V.M., a veterinarian at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in Ithaca, New York. “Dogs who can handle changes in their routines and environment, who are used to being around other dogs and especially those who go to doggie daycare are best candidates for boarding.”
In choosing a professional pet sitter, consider one who belongs to a professional pet sitting organization, such as the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters and Pet Sitters International. Members of these organizations must show proof of being licensed and bonded. This is not the time to save money by hiring the neighbor kid or an untrained house sitter.
“A professional pet sitter is prepared for emergencies and, in many ways, can be like Santa Claus to your dog,” says Joette White, president of Park Cities Pet Sitter in Dallas, voted the 2016 Business of the Year by NAPPS. “A pet sitter will feed, walk, play and love on your dog as well as pick up your mail, water the plants and take out the trash. We do all we can to let your dog know that he is loved and well-cared for during your absence. Plus, your dog gets to stay in his own home.” Boarding your dog — or taking him for doggie day care — are options if you have an energetic, social dog or one who acts up when there is a change in household routine.
“We get requests from people who know that the in-laws coming for the holidays don’t want dogs in the house or may be allergic to dogs or insist on bringing their dog who does not get along with your dog,” says Ash Vaughan, owner of Canine Republic Resort in Plano, Texas. His company was recently voted best boarding facilities by Plano Magazine. “We also get a lot of requests for doggie day care when people need a staycation at home or want their dogs in a safe place while they get the house ready for holiday guests.”
He advises that you scout out local boarding/day care facilities in advance and give your dog a “trial run” before the holiday to gauge his level of acceptance. His company offers a free day of day care during non-holiday seasons and encourages people to tour his center before booking a reservation.
How to ease holiday stress in dogs if you’re celebrating at home
Schedule five to 10 minutes of cuddle time each day with your dog. Photography © avemario | Thinkstock.
If you plan to stay home for the holidays with your dog, here are some ways to save the sanity and fend off stress for you both:
Power walk with your pooch. Book time each day to take a daily brisk walk or run with your dog to stave off some of the holiday stress bubbling inside you both. Use the walk to mentally map out your holiday gift list or holiday dinner game plan — or as a good excuse to escape irritating or demanding relatives who are visiting.
Schedule canine cuddle time. Calmly call your dog over and cuddle with him on the sofa for five to 10 minutes each day. Enjoy being in the moment with your four-legged pal. You will be amazed how this daily ritual will help you and your dog survive, perhaps even thrive, this holiday season.
Dish up a holiday treat. Show your dog how much you love him by baking him a special batch of canine cookies or snacks. (See the sidebar for Marvelous Mutt Meatballs recipe).
Book an activity that your dog can join you in. Take your leashed dog on a walk through a neighborhood all decked out in holiday lights and decorations. (Bring a stash of his favorite treats and poop bags.) Or check online for any special dog holiday parties or events in your area.
Keep tabs on your dog through technology
Whether you are gone from home for the day or the entire holiday, you can keep tabs on your home-alone dog 24/7. There are lots of high-tech monitoring devices that enable you to see, speak and even dole out a treat to your dog with the click of a button. Some gadgets even allow you to remotely play fetch or have your dog chase a laser toy from apps on your smartphone.
Nix holiday stress in dogs by making these New Year’s resolutions:
Be ready for the next round of holidays by creating and embracing some New Year’s resolutions to benefit your dog. Here are a few to consider:
Become a label reader. Select quality commercial products that list a real meat (such as beef, chicken or salmon) as the first ingredient. Choose food made in North America to ensure quality compliance.
Schedule daily mini-play sessions indoors, especially during inclement weather. Mix and match different types of dog toys to maintain interest. Toss a tennis ball down the hallway or engage in a friendly game of tug-of-war with a durable rope toy, or praise him for stalking and “capturing” a plush toy with a squeaker inside.
Invest five minutes every day to brush your dog’s coat. Select the right brush or comb that fits his coat — short-haired, long-haired or nearly hairless like the Chinese Crested Dog or Mexican Hairless Dog (Xoloitzcuintli). Or use grooming gloves designed for use on dogs.
Have pet safety hotlines on hand
Keep your dog safe year-round by posting the contact information of your veterinarian, after-hours emergency veterinary clinic and the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center in a visible place, like the refrigerator. The APSCA’s 24-hour hotline can be reached by calling 888-426-4435 or you can visit its website at www.aspca.org/apcc.
