This Slytherin boy at the library being the most relatable character in the HL universe. Same, boy. Same. Sometimes I want to smash my head on the table, forget my work, and hibernate until the next Sunday😂😂

And this random Gryffindor boy who can be found studying in the dark at that spot with pillows a bit further from Hogsmeade near Leopold's stall. I wonder how chaotic the Gryffindor's common room is for this boy to go this far simply to study. Or he probably wants access to the sky to study astronomy. Regardless, good on you, boy.

Also, I myself acknowledge I am faulty if this. Not really when it comes to Israel/Palestine but more when it comes to Belgium.

Back in the 9th and 10th grade, I was doing a lotta research into World History (for fun and for APWH). When I learned about the Belgian Genocide in the DRC during and after King Leopold II, I began to hate Belgium as a nation and Belgians as a people.

How could an individual own an entire country as a personal slave colony? 

How come more people died in this genocide than in the holocaust but nobody talks about it?

How come he literally put people from his slave colony into human zoos, and those humans remains are in museums?

How could a nation be so evil?

How could such an evil monarchy still be in power, that government still be in power?

Why isn’t this taught in Belgian schools?

How could a country be so evil?

Now, at this time, I was living in the Middle East. The population of Belgians was basically non existent, and I didn’t speak French or Dutch so my interaction with Belgians online was non existent. I was told one POV, one historically accurate POV, and because this was one of the only things I knew about Belgians, I hated the country.

And, of my group of friends who were mostly Middle Eastern, South Asian, South East Asian, North African, Jewish, or American, well, let’s just say that nobody really cared I was being so Belgianophobic

Then I moved to Germany where there were many Belgians at my school, and I realized that like 99% of Belgians had nothing to do with that genocide in the DRC, and blaming the people for the actions of their monarchy and government was a) only going to make them double down and b) lead to more harm for everyone

Also yes I acknowledge Belgium, the country, still has neocolonial control in the DRC and was responsible for what occurred in Rwanda and Burundi, but again, that’s the fault of the government and the corporate elites who crush the proletariat everywhere.

And, while learning basically just German history in IB European History HL, we looked at how propaganda spread, looking primarily at American and Nazi propaganda. One of the biggest tools of propagandists is to convince a people that their government is the only thing protecting them as a people from other countries coming in, destroying their culture, and that they should support everything their country does… Jingoism. And this propaganda used real world accounts as a way to prove it. 

“America should invade Iraq and Afghanistan because they wanted to destroy the American way of life. And we must do it alone because nobody came to our aid during 9/11”

Both of these are half truths

“Nazi Germany must kill all Jews because they stabbed us in the back during WW1”

This statement was largely built on bigoted first hand accounts dialed up to 11 and nothing more

“The non Belgians hate our history, we must unapologetically support it”

And now you have youth groups protesting the removal of Leopold II statues

“Italians must become militant, look how we are treated in USA. A strong Italy needs to exist for the sake of the Italian people”

Yes Italians faced discrimination (see Italian lynchings in USA south) but that doesn’t give you the right to fucking invade Ethiopia

“Israel must become militant, look how we are treated in Europe. A strong Israel needs to exist for the sake of the Jewish people”

Yes Italians faced discrimination (see all of European history) but that doesn’t give you the right to fucking invade Palestine

Once you realize you were the victim of propaganda, it’s easy to spot

If it seems like I've been posting a lot about antisemitism, it's because I've seen massive amounts of it coming from every possible angle and no one seems to give a fuck except Jewish people, who are called traitors and blood-thirsty Zionists for saying anything while "allies" look the other way.

I have seen so much antisemitism on my dashboard from people I previously trusted and respected as leftists and activists. I have seen seen indigenous bloggers, including many former mutuals, say the cruelest and most vile things and act like it's totally fine.

I refuse to be complacent in this hate and violence and cruelty and I highly suggest you all also think long and hard about why antisemitism is becoming so prevalent and explicit in leftist circles and how we're all contributing to it.

This is not a matter of "yeah!! Not all Jews are Zionists!!" You CANNOT categorize people as "good Jews" vs "bad Jews" and if you feel like you need to justify antisemitism against certain groups of Jews, then you are part of the problem.

Dream movie, theatre, tv, etc. role for Claire or RF?

Ashley: My dream role for Claire is Heidi in The Heidi Chronicles. Elisabeth Moss played the role on Broadway a few years ago and I unfortunately missed it… it closed before a friend I really wanted to share it with was able to join. She’d also be an amazing May in Fool For Love. She’d be a downright INCREDIBLE Hedda Gabler… basically I want her to star in all of my favorite plays.

As for Rupert… I dunno. I don’t have the same kind of feel for him as an actor. He’d be fucking amazing as Leopold in Largo Desolato or as Josef in The Memorandum or as Foustka in Temptation… so, like, anything by Václav Havel.

Sara: I’ve really loved what Reese Witherspoon has done the last few years. I loved her in Wild and in Big Little Lies. So I guess my dream role for Claire would be something meaty and headlining like that – either a film or (actual) miniseries (I don’t know what a S2 of BLL will look like). Oh, I also think she’d rock a villain role. I dreamed of her playing Amy in Gone Girl for years and it says a LOT about Rosamund Pike in that film that I was completely satisfied with their casting. 

As for Rupert, I’d like to see him unleash in a dramatic role. Quinn was a very restrained, terse character. It seems like Vasily in Death of Stalin is big, but, of course, that’s a comedy. I saw Nocturnal Animals a few weeks ago and I was blown away by Aaron Taylor-Johnson in that film. He was legit insane but so compelling. I love to see actors really go there in their roles and choices.

Frangi: Dream? IDK. I became a little afraid of investing in TV or movies since my heart was broken over and over again with HL.

For Rupert, I‘d love to see him in another TV series. Movies are just too short, and I would like to see him uncovering the depth of another character. My current book character crush is Ned Willard from Ken Follett’s latest book, A Column of Fire. The book is set amidst the religious conflicts of 1558.

If you prefer a non-period drama, I’ll stick to my wish from a few months ago: Caelum Quirk from The Hour I First Believed. I recently said I‘d like to see him as Harry Hole (pronounced as Hølé), not aware that this is Michael Fassbender‘s latest role.

I‘d like to see Claire in a comedy. She delivers those short moments of levity in HL‘s earlier seasons pitch-perfect, with great timing, and seemingly effortlessly, and I‘d like to sit back and see more of that. As for a period drama, the Brits plan to do a remake of Jane Austen novels as a mini-series, including a “darker” Pride and Prejudice. Claire would make a great Caroline Bingley. (And who wouldn’t want to see Rupert‘s take on Mr Darcy?)

Plus la qualité des produits est bonne, meilleur est le plat. Il est préférable de bien choisir ses produits: du jardin, d’une A.M.A.P., du marché, d’un artisan, de préférence bio.

Mozart n'a pas été élevé dans une communauté avec des traditions, il a voyagé sans arrêt en Europe. Par contre, il a eu beaucoup de pression car son père a pensé que sa mission divine était de faire connaître le talent exceptionnel de son fils. Dans son enfance, il était considéré comme le cadeau de Dieu.

Mozart était un esprit indépendant et cela a guidé sa vie. Quand son père lui a trouvé un emploi auprès du Cardinal de Salzbourg, il a arrêté de faire de la musique sacrée du jour au lendemain et il s'est fait renvoyé.

Quand l'empereur Leopold qui était viennois lui a proposé d'écrire des opéras, il a délibéremment écrit contre les conventions italiennes alors qu'il respectait leurs conventions dans ses oeuvres précédentes. A cette époque, tous les responsables des arts étaient italiens. Il a écrit Cosi fan tutte en 1789 qui décrit une histoire d'adultères, contraire à la morale. Les noces de Figaro dénoncent les privilèges archaïques de la noblesse et surtout de l'aristocratie. La pièce de Beaumarchais était alors interdite dans toutes les monarchies. Quand Mozart a eu du succès et que le nationalisme impérial allemand a essayé de le récupérer en lui demandant d'écrire des opéras en allemend, il a écrit L'enlèvement au Sérail qui se situe dans un harem. Puis il a tout rejetté en écrivant sur les thèmes maçonniques avec La flûte enchantée. 

A la fin de sa vie, il a refusé l'aide financière de ses amis aristocrates. Le Requiem a été écrit sur son lit de mort. Les rumeurs divergent sur les circonstances de sa mort, Salieri aurait écrit sous la dictée le Confutatis et certains vont jusqu'à dire que les Italiens l'auraient empoisonné.

Incidentally, @shellcollector turned me on to this podcast and it is *everything*.

I don’t know why this is such a mood, but it is. I’m really into Burgess, Philby and McLane; I know another gay man who’s really into Leopold and Loeb. I suppose it’s the history nerd version of being into Disney queer villainy; just as cinema has given us such a wealth of representation of queer malevolence that we have embraced it as our own, so too have the “well behaved gays” rarely made history. In their place, we have a lot of people whose evil was used as an example of a specifically queer deviance, and who we know about because of it. & I think the fascination, too, is rather like the embrace of queer-coded Disney villains; I’m very into Jeremy Thorpe too. We get so comfortable with seeing ourselves only depicted as wicked, that we embrace it as our own, as part of our aesthetic.

The Morrisey episode is *exceptionally* good. The ones which are just a historic (not a personal) narrative, less so, but it’s still always exciting to me to be reminded We Have Always Existed. Historic LGBT people continue to be the greatest source of validation for me.

Also, very interesting how many of these figures slip into white nationalism/racism/nazism etc; it feels significant, like, people trying to cope with their own abjection by allying yourself with a different privilege axis where you are strong.

(Don’t underestimate the content warning for Aileen Wuornos. If you haven’t read about her life before, you need to be made aware that I don’t think I know of anyone who was more comprehensively failed by everybody around her; I guess that’s part of the fun of the evil queer men trope, is that they’re usually part of the upper echelons, and therefore both insulated from some of the consequnces of homophobia as well as beautifully dressed. Wuornos is not a fun part of the evil queer men trope. It’s a horrible life story, her serial killing doesn’t even make the top ten of distressing content in that episode)

Leopold III., Markgraf von Österreich, trug maßgeblich zur späteren Größe seines Heimatlandes bei. Der charakterlich und geistig hochstehende Babenberger wurde um 1075 geboren.
