National Pecan Pie Day
Beneath the shade of a Georgia pine
And that’s home you know
Sweet tea, pecan pie and homemade wine
Where the peaches grow.
Chicken Fried - Zac Brown Band
We’re simply nutty over today’s honoree, National Pecan Pie Day on July 12. It’s pretty easy to get behind a day dedicated to one of our favorite desserts. Indeed, 90% of Americans surveyed believe eating a slice of pie is one of life’s simple pleasures, indulging in 186 million commercially sold pies every year! People who prefer pecan pie over the many other types of pies describe themselves as thoughtful and analytical. We’re not sure if this still holds true for those who add ice cream or whipped cream but, nonetheless, it’s time to celebrate the delicious dessert today!
History of National Pecan Pie Day
It is uncertain how National Pecan Pie Day started but we certainly feel indebted to an unknown person because we couldn’t agree more with the idea of celebrating such a beloved dessert.
Pecan pie has a long, Southern history whose origins are highly debatable. Some believe pecan pie started in New Orleans by French immigrants, turned Southern, in the 1700s after being introduced to the pecan by Native Americans. Others believe pecan pie got its start in Alabama but this claim is unsupported by written recipes or printed literature. Of course, it’s not hard to believe many Southerners would love to lay claim to being the inventor of pecan pie.
Following the Civil War, commercial developers brought in a few varieties of pecans to grow in Georgia, which is now the main commercial grower of pecans in the U.S. Grafted pecan trees also became prevalent in Louisiana in the mid- to late-1800s. The name of the nut itself is derived from the French word ‘pacane,’ which is taken from the Algonquian word for ‘nut.’
The first printed pecan pie recipe surfaced in an 1886 edition of “Harper’s Bazaar” magazine. Years later, various forms of the recipe were published in well-known cookbooks such as “Joy of Cooking.” Throughout the early 1900s, Karo corn syrup was invented and yet another claim to the discovery of pecan pie emerged. The wife of a company executive shared her recipe using Karo as the ingredient of choice instead of maple syrup, honey, or molasses. Whether her claim is true, Karo corn syrup helped raise the popularity of pecan pie when they published the recipe on the product can.
While most hold the perception that pecan pie remains a Southern dish, in reality, its popularity has swept across the U.S. with regions taking on their own ingredient preferences. Pecan pie holds a place in the Thanksgiving trinity of pies — pumpkin, pecan, and apple — most frequently enjoyed by families during this holiday. Due to this, many also consider pecan pie a dessert to savor during the fall- and winter months.

The next in their Stone Fan Favorites series, Stone Brewing Company re-releases Baird / Ishii / Stone Japanese Green Tea IPA.
Press Release
ESCONDIDO, CA (March 7, 2022) – Stone Brewing announces the release of the second beer in its series of Stone Fan Favorites, Baird / Ishii / Stone Japanese Green Tea IPA. For discerning beer drinkers, this is their cup of tea! In the whole wide world of things-that-go-together, tea and beer haven’t often been among them. In fact, Stone Brewing was one of the first US craft breweries to try such a feat. Blending the assertive flavors of hops and the delicate characteristics of tea takes profound expertise. On the nose, Baird / Ishii / Stone Japanese Green Tea IPA imparts green tea aroma alongside peach, apricot and mango from the hops. Tropical fruit flavors – mainly mango and pineapple are followed by hints of mineral and tea. The tea flavor lingers, contributing a dryness to the finish. However elegant the artistry, this is no delicate cup of tea. The beer itself, in classic old school Stone style, is big and bold at 10.1% ABV. The Stone Fan Favorites Series is a lineup of limited release throwback beers voted on by loyal fans of the brewery’s prolific 25-year history. Baird / Ishii / Stone Japanese Green Tea IPA was first brewed in 2011 to support relief efforts from the tsunami in Japan. Good friends Bryan Baird and Toshi Ishii invited Stone to collaborate on this Japanese-inspired IPA that’s been requested by fans ever since. Bryan Baird founded Baird’s Brewing in Japan and Toshi Ishii, who got his start at Stone (1998-2001) founded Ishii Brewing in Guam, soon to open in Japan. Stone’s Senior Manager of Brewing, Jeremy Moynier, shared, “Brewing with tea is a great challenge. It’s important to get the right tea and have it integrated and balanced with the other ingredients. This beer definitely strikes that balance, even at 10.1% ABV! This is a special beer, and I fondly remember that day, over 10 years ago brewing with Toshi and Bryan. This is an internal favorite and we are stoked our fans agreed and voted for us to brew it again.” Baird / Ishii / Stone Japanese Green Tea IPA is now available nationwide in 12oz six-pack cans, 22oz bottles and draft. Visit Shop.StoneBrewing.com for shipping direct to addresses in CA, OH and Washington D.C. or locate the beer by zip code at Find.StoneBrewing.com.

TASTING NOTES

Aroma: A complex blend of herbal tea and hops: elements from both ingredients are there. The up-front aroma is mostly green tea, and there are also strong elements of peach, apricot and mango from the hops.
Taste: There is a massive hop presence in both the flavor and bitterness. The hops start off as tropical fruits like mango and pineapple, and then are followed by hints of mineral from the Sorachi Ace. The tea flavors assert themselves mid-palate and linger nicely with a dry character.
Palate: Medium-body, dry and bitter finish.

Inktober 2020 #3: Bulky
The entity scowled, tapping his (its? Their?) foot impatiently. “I told you, you get to bring one thing.”
Sara smiled brightly at him. “This is one thing. My garden.”
Ganymede looked down at her, his expression even more supercilious than usual. “Do you honestly think I’m going to allow an entire garden as one thing?”
Sara sat down on the tree stump. Part of her still couldn’t believe she’d lost the house, that all of this – the tree stump her father had cut down to prevent the wind from knocking it onto the house, the tire swing he’d put up for her, Mom’s rose trellises all around the house and the herb patch she’d had Sara weeding and tending from the age of 5, the screened-in porch, the attic bedroom – all would be gone in a matter of weeks. The bank would take it, and sell it to someone who would probably destroy everything her parents had built to make the place special and unique, and she would never see any of this ever again.
She’d thought Ganymede’s offer would allow her to take at least a part of her home with her, but he was balking.
“When you think about it, can we describe anything as just one thing?” she asked. “Everything we have is made of molecules, which are made of atoms, which are made of quarks. We’re all a multiplicity. We all have legions contained within us. So how is a garden not ‘one thing’ but, say, if I wanted to bring a bicycle, that would be ‘one thing’ even though it’s made of so many things?”
Ganymede’s expression went from deeply irritated to reluctantly amused, and he chuckled. “A nice argument, but no. Your garden’s too bulky. It can neither transport you, nor can it be carried around with you.”
“You never said there was a weight limit.”
“It’s not a weight limit. If you wanted to bring a car, you could. I don’t advise it, but you could.”
“Are any of the others bringing a car?” Sara asked.
Now Ganymede laughed. “Tsk, tsk. I told you I wouldn’t tell you anything about what the others are choosing.”
Ganymede – who appeared to be a tall, slender man with pale skin and curly green hair, like he was some kind of comic book character, and who claimed to be a very bored alien with godlike powers who was taking human form so that he could interact with Sara – had showed up at the café Sara waitressed at, three weeks ago, and was apparently very impressed with Sara’s ability to put up with entitled idiots and even get them to calm down and do what they were supposed to do. He’d ordered cherry pie and asked her if she’d ever wanted to travel into the past, and when Sara had pointed out that in the past, she would have had her rights severely curtailed because she was a woman, he’d asked, what if she could bring one thing from this time, one thing in her possession?
Sara’s master’s degree in the history of plant cultivation in Europe and how it impacted society had never done her a damn bit of good. It had resulted in crushing student loans that a job as a waitress couldn’t keep up with and still pay the mortgage her parents had left to her when they’d died in a car accident, and it hadn’t resulted in a good-paying job in academia like she’d expected when she started college. She was about to lose her parents’ home, the only place she’d ever considered home in her life. And before her boyfriend had dumped her last month, he’d turned most of their friends against her with lies and distortions.
Sara didn’t want to die, but she had lately been seriously reconsidering how badly she actually wanted to live.
So she’d agreed to Ganymede’s offer. Go back to the pre-Renaissance medieval era – or something very much like it – with one thing brought from the future. He’d explained that she wouldn’t actually be going to her own world’s past, so she couldn’t create a paradox by changing the future – she could freely do whatever she wanted without worrying about making her grandparents never born or something. He’d also told her that he was making the same offer to several other people, but that she wouldn’t necessarily get to meet them unless they happened to run into each other by chance in the past-world. And she had a month to get the thing she wanted to bring to the past.
Sara had spent the last three weeks digging up her garden and potting everything in ceramic pots, figuring ceramic wouldn’t be an issue in the past like plastic would be. Sadly, she’d had to abandon the apple trees, the peach tree and the grapevines – she couldn’t exactly dig out trees and pot them – but she’d gotten everything else. The potatoes had been a challenge – exposing potatoes to light while they were growing would make them inedible, so she’d had to dig them out on a cloudy night with no moon, more or less digging by feel instead of sight. Carrots, potatoes and onions had needed very large, deep pots. She’d wound her zucchini around a tomato cage in the large pot she’d put it in. The small fruit bushes – the blueberry bush, the raspberry bush – were already in pots. She had her peppers, her tomatoes, her tiny soybean bush, her arugula.
And now, after she’d done so much work to pot everything, Ganymede was telling her she couldn’t bring it?
“Look, if I had a caravan wagon and a horse, I could definitely carry all of this.”
“But you can’t bring a caravan wagon and a horse back with you.”
“No, but I could get one there.”
Ganymede chuckled. “You think I’m sending you with money? You get period-acceptable clothes, the ability to speak the language, immunity to all the local diseases, and the thing that you bring with you, and that’s it. If you appear in the middle of a field, or a town square, surrounded by potted plants, how are you going to bring them with you to whatever shelter you need to take?”
“They’re plants. If I have to leave them out in a field for a few days while I carry them all to wherever I end up going, nothing bad’s going to happen to them.”
“And what if you appear in the middle of the town square?”
“Then I prevail upon some good gentlemen to help me move them someplace safe.”
A deep sigh escaped Ganymede. “I’m almost tempted to let you. Just to let you find out first hand how much your plans are not likely to work. But no. An entire garden is too bulky, and I’m quite certain that most humans would define a garden as a collection of things, not one thing.”
“Come on! I did a lot of work to put all these plants into pots! Doesn’t that count for something?”
“Sadly, no.” Ganymede walked around the garden of pots, randomly touching most of the plants. “You did do quite a lot of work. I tell you what, I feel bad for you. Pick something else to bring and I’ll make sure all your plants get donated to people who like to grow things and are good at it.”
“And aren’t racists,” Sara insisted.
“It’s interesting that that matters to you; aren’t you part of the dominant ethnic group in this nation? Racism doesn’t affect you, generally speaking.”
It was true that Sara was white, and therefore, racism rarely directly affected her, but she had an answer for that. “Racist people in this country have been brainwashed into believing that climate change is a hoax, that gay and transgender people are some kind of terrible threat, and that it’s more important to make sure the government doesn’t tax rich people than to put any accountability on big corporations. Everything bad that we can’t get solved in this country and we can’t even begin to start solving it, because people won’t let us… it’s because rich people have figured out how to use racism to brainwash white people into voting against their own interests.”
“Oh, I understand.” Ganymede grinned broadly. “You’re a hippie, aren’t you?”
“Uh… not really? That was sort of my parents’ generation? I think of myself more as solarpunk. But if what you’re trying to get at is that I’m someone who cares about the environment and wants people to be happy and healthy and to care about each other, then yeah.”
“All right, very well. I’ll hand them over to people whose political beliefs generally track with yours, who are good with plants, and who have space to grow them. Now, pick something else.”
“A big sack that I can carry on my back, maybe 50 pounds, and I get to fill it with seeds and bulbs and anything else plant-related that I can fit in the sack.”
Ganymede raised his eyebrows. “You’re really dedicated to this bit, aren’t you?”
“I know how to use plants to change history. I don’t know how to change history with anything else – not in a way I might want to. I mean, I could bring a gun, but after I was out of ammo, what good would it do me? And also, I don’t like guns.”
“All right,” Ganymede said. “I’ll allow it. As long as you can carry the sack on your person, you can stuff as many seeds into it as you want.”
Sara smiled at him with her best customer service smile. “Thank you, I really appreciate that.”
“One more week,” he said, and vanished.
One more week and she’d leave all this behind. One more week and she wouldn’t have to worry about the foreclosure and impending eviction anymore, because she’d be in a whole other world.

13. "Hey! I made pecan pie for dessert.”, “I think I love you.” Phichimetti Please! :) ~ Days
This gave me the perfect set up to lead into all of my responses to our Very Merry Phichimetti Christmas Prompts!! You da best, Mini Me ;) (If you want to join us for a Very Merry Phichimetti Christmas, the prompts begin in 2 days!)
Christmas Prompts
One day. For one day Phichit had been hanging at Chris’sapartment being given the royal treatment by his fabulous boyfriend. Theydidn’t have a lot of time to spare between practicing and preparing fornationals, but Phichit had happily accepted Chris’s offer to visit forChristmas. They would have thirteen days together ahead of the holiday and fourafter it, and Phichit had a list of plans for each of them. Starting withtreating his boyfriend to a fabulous home cooked meal.
Phichit had never had a romantic holiday with anyone, but hehad spent lots of time playing with the idea when he lived with Yuuri. They hadcome up with grandiose ideas of skating on frozen lakes, and renting cabins inthe woods, and decorating Christmas while wearing matching pajamas. Yuuri hadalways imagined Victor as part of his fantasy, while Phichit had always imaginea certain curly haired Swiss skater. As many posters as Yuuri had of Victor,Phichit had an equal number of Chris, and both of them had happily indulged ineach other’s hopes for love. Currently, Yuuri and Victor were celebrating theirfirst holidays as a married couple and Phichit was standing in the kitchen ofhis ultimate crush. Smiling, Phichit pinched the rim of his pie crust as hesnuck a glance at the clock above the counter.
Chris had one last day of solo practice before Phichit wouldbe joining him at the rink. It stunk that they would have to lose time toactual training, but Phichit couldn’t argue how excited he was to watch Chrispractice. He had seen videos of Chris, concentrated and developing routinesalmost as if they were flowing out of him directly from his heart. Even hissexiest programs had detailed care put into them, and Phichit admired thateffort more than he could describe.
He chuckled to himself as he carefully added the filling tohis pie. For so long Chris had seemed like an untouchable force, a skater sofar beyond Phichit’s abilities that they would never be considered equals.Chris was sexy, Phichit was adorable. Phichit took selfies, while Chris postedpictures of his cat and famous paintings. He had argued with Yuuri that it wasfar less likely that Phichit would ever catch Chris’s eye than Yuuri catchingVictor’s, and Phichit had been happily chanting his I told you so’s right up until last year’s GPF banquet. Chris hadasked him to dance, Phichit had fallen into Chris’s arms, and the rest washistory.
A history full of beautiful and playful memories that madePhichit’s cheeks turn red as he slid the pie into the oven. Their dinner was invarious pots on the stove, but the pie was a special treat. Chris’s mom had letit slip that it had always been one of Chris’s favorites and Phichit couldn’tresist the urge to spoil his boyfriend. It was no secret that Chris wasconstantly spoiling Phichit, and he figured he would take any opportunity toreturn the favor.
The sound of the key in the lock made Phichit bounce withexcitement. He didn’t resist the urge to meet Chris with a hug as soon as thedoor was opened, burying his face into Chris’s neck and smelling the scent ofChris’s soap. Smiling harder when Chris’s arms came around him, Phichit pulledhis head back to look at his boyfriend. “You showered at the rink?” He was alittle surprised as Chris had a spectacular bathroom and the rink was onlyminutes from Chris’s apartment.
Smirking, Chris leaned in for a kiss before he answered. “Iwanted to be prepared. I left you alone in my apartment all afternoon. I didn’tknow what you might have up your sleeve, peach.” Trailing kisses down Phichit’sjaw, Chris nuzzled at Phichit’s neck making Phichit laugh as the stumbletickled him. “You are wearing far more clothes than I expected.” Chriswhispered against his ear, making Phichit shiver in delight.
“I made dinner though!” Phichit nudged Chris’s cheek withhis nose to encourage Chris to look at him. “In my experience, cooking naked isdangerous and not all that fun when you’re alone.” Mocking Chris’s raisedeyebrows, Phichit giggled and stepped out of his boyfriend’s embrace. “Sit downand let me serve you!” Tugging Chris’s hand, Phichit paused to strip Chris outof his coat, tossing it across the back of the couch before pulling Chris intothe dining room. Pushing him into a chair, Phichit bent down for a quick kissand said “wait here” against Chris’s lips.
Chris had never shared his space with anyone, but there wasa sense of perfection floating around his heart as he watched Phichit flutterthrough the kitchen. He never allowed himself to consider how amazing it wouldbe to have someone to share simple moments with, like eating meals and brushingtheir teeth. There was a beauty to the way Phichit had fit into his life, leaving Chris feeling lucky that they were having this chance to be together. It would hurt when Phichit left, but Chris refused to think about that as thebeautiful embodiment of sunshine waltzed back into the room.
His stomach growled audibly at the aroma coming from hisplate. Noodles, chicken and vegetables were stacked in an artistic mountain andthe smell was making Chris’s mouth water. If he had been alone dinner wouldhave been one of the pre-prepped meals still stacked in his fridge. It wouldcertainly not have been the colorful masterpiece brightening the plain whiteplate in front of him. “Phichit, this looks amazing,” Chris leaned closer to breathein the heavenly scent as he sunk his fork into his first bite. He hummed as theflavors blossomed in his mouth and gave Phichit a smiling thumbs up.
Pride was vibrating through Phichit as he watched Chrissavoring his food. He would have to call his mom later and let her know thather cooking advice via Skype had led to one very happy Christophe Giacometti.Phichit could already imagine how thrilled his mom would be and couldn’t helpgrinning as he took his first bite.
Forcing himself to slow down, Chris wiped his mouth and tooka sip of wine. He knew that neither of them should be drinking, but he didn’tcare. They were together and that would be cause for any type of celebrationthey wanted. Picking his fork back up, Chris leaned back in his chair to lookinto the kitchen. “Is there more of this? I worked hard today, I claim my rightto seconds.” Wiggling his eyebrows, Chris took another bite, smiling at Phichitas he chewed.
“There’s more,” Phichit said, trying to keep himself fromgloating over his success, “but I wouldn’t fill up on it. I have somethingspecial for dessert.” His cheeks burst into blush as Chris raised a singleeyebrow at him, winking quickly as Chris squeezed Phichit’s thigh under thetable. Giggling, Phichit shook his head. “Maybe that too,” he slipped his handover Chris’s and squeezed, squeaking when Chris ran their joined hands upPhichit’s inner thigh. “Hey!” Phichit pretended to scold, squeezing Chris’shand again and laughing when Chris pretended to pout. “I made pecan pie fordessert, your mom gave me the recipe,” he said with another laugh, reaching outfor his wine glass and watching Chris intently.
“I think I love you,” Chris said, eyes sparkling with thesweetness of the gesture as he reached over the table to kiss Phichit on thecheek. No one had ever cared for him the way Phichit did, and he felt his heartflutter with all the expectations for the next few days.
I think I love you too,Phichit thought, unable to stop himself from staring as Chris settled back intohis dinner. He didn’t think Chris would say something so lightly, but his mindtold him to hold back his own declaration. Maybe, just maybe, before he left toreturn to Thailand, he would be able to tell Chris all of the things he hadbeen feeling over the past few months.
For now though, Phichit was simply happy to enjoy a mealwith his boyfriend, with all the possibilities of the next two weeks stretchedout in front of them.

Some people observe National Peach Pie Day as an extended celebration of National Eat A Peach Day.
Pies are easy to make. A pie is a baked dish prepared by a pastry dough casing such that the fillings get covered. The fillings in a pie can either be sweet or spicy, and some pies may even contain meat. Pies can be served in a variety of sizes, that range from bite-size for a quick snack to the ones that can be shared with the entire family. A pie made with fresh peaches is not just delicious to eat but also quite healthy. It tastes even better when served with a generous helping of vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or a glass of cold milk. Since peaches are also rich in nutritional content, a peach pie is the perfect way to get your vitamins while also enjoying a well-loved dessert. On this day, instead of just peach pies, you can also taste pies made of unique fillings such as mangoes, avocados, or strawberries. You can expand your palate and try pies from different regions to appreciate how truly versatile the dessert is. Hopscotch Kick Off (Part 1)
As September inches closer by the day, the city of Raleigh starts to prepare itself for that one magical weekend of the month known as Hopscotch Music Festival. This weekend, happening Sept. 7-10, takes over downtown Raleigh as music fans from just about everywhere descend upon the city’s many venues, some even makeshift just for the festival. We here at WKNC look forward to the festival every single year and would like to share with you some of our most anticipated acts for this year in our special Hopscotch kickoff!
Run the Jewels
Over the past four years, Hip-Hop has been turned on it’s head by the genre’s super-duo Run the Jewels. Comprised of emcee Killer Mike and producer/emcee El-P, the pair have created an undeniable sound for themselves that originates in their self-titled debut, and has been reinvented twice over on their 2nd and 3rd LP’s. But even more exciting than their studio albums, is the sheer legendary live performance that Run the Jewels has put on for fans all over the country. It only makes sense that Hopscotch would want in on this action, and out of all the amazing acts on the festival’s line-up this year, I am most excited to see RTJ hit the stage.
My favorite tracks from each album include “Banana Clip feat. Big Boi” (Run the Jewels), “Love Again” (Run the Jewels 2), and “Legend Has It” (Run the Jewels 3).
Killer Mike has always been a staple lyricist in Hip-Hop, representing a unique spin on the Atlanta-sound. But after having El-P produce his 2011 album R.A.P. Music, and featuring on El-P’s album Cancer 4 Cure, the two realized the chemistry was perfect, and they toured together to promote these projects. This of course led to 2013’s first release under their new moniker, Run the Jewels. Ever since, they have put on unbelievable live performances, arguably thriving the most successfully at festivals (which is good news for Hopscotch goers).
As Underground Music Director, I have of course promoted every Run the Jewels project, and they continue to be in regular rotation at WKNC, because they encompass the ultimate “Hip-Hop” sound, yet they also reshape it. This year’s performance will be a special treat for me, as I have yet to see them live. The exciting part about seeing a duo is the way they transfer energy back and forth throughout their performance, and I can only assume they have mastered their craft over the last 4 years of touring together. To me, the show just might be, as Run the Jewels would put it, a “Christmas F**king Miracle!”
Run the Jewels will be performing Friday night at 8pm at Red Hat.
-John Wilson, Underground Music Director
Cherry Glazerr
Los Angeles’s Cherry Glazzerr is upbeat indie rock with garage rock, punk, and synth pop influences. The band features songwriter Clementine Creevy on guitar and vocals, Tabor Allen on drums, Sasami Ashworth on synth and formed in 2012 when Creevy was just fifteen years old. Their music is an honest display of self expression and offers a modern spirit of the rriot girl movement with frontwoman Clementine’s songwriting themes of feminism and empowerment which can especially be heard in their second album Apocalipstick which came out earlier this year.
Tracks like “Nurse Ratched” feature upbeat garage rock influenced guitar laced in synth, powerful drums, and strong smooth vocals with socially charged lyrics “She’s a wild one in a land that’s supposed to be free”.
Other tracks have a more self reflective feel such as “Told You I’d Be With the Guys” a reflection of youthful friendships. As well as a more punk influenced sound as Clementine croons with the ferocity of Kathleen Hanna (Bikini Kill) “ I told you, I told you I’d be with the guys, but I know better now than to be with the guys”. Apocalipstick was recorded with the talent of Joe Chicarelli (White Stripes, The Shins, The Strokes) and Carlos de la Garza (Bleached, M83, Tegan and Sara) and released on Secretly Canadian! records.
They are a band not to miss at Hopscotch and will be closing out the Pour House at 12am with a energetic, head-banding, feel good, empowering set.
For fans of: Speedy Ortiz, Diet Cig, Screaming Females
-Mariam Marand, Local Music Director
Pie Face Girls
Raleigh based trio Pie Face Girls is comprised of Dani Hoffpauir on lead vocals and guitar, Tiffany Huff on bass and Klay Misenheimer on drums. Kicking off the high-energy lineup at Pour House on Saturday, they are sure to cause a stir. Their music is politically motivated with goals aligned against the patriarchy, the “alt-right” and any of their sympathizers. Join these warriors as they tear Trump a new one whilst infecting onlookers with the urge to aggressively move their bodies in solidarity. Their sound is very pop-punk and energizing, some of my favorite songs are “Get On The Floor”, “Dude Yr Girlfriend Sux” and their Peaches cover of “Fuck the Pain Away” (found of their Bandcamp). The Pour House is THE venue to attend Saturday of Hopscotch, with Pie Face Girls getting things started at 9PM and Cherry Glazerr ending the night at midnight.
-Farah Hamouda, DJ sPaRr0vV
serpentwithfeet
I have already seen serpentwithfeet open for Perfume Genius at Cat’s Cradle, but his performance was transformative for me; Josiah Wise, the artist behind the enigmatic music project, weaves together R&B and gospel, creating songs that sound like prayers. Wise is able to piece together the experience of queer love and heartbreak in both a theatrical and intimate way for his listeners. I’m excited to see what he brings to the stage for Hopscotch, since his stage presence demands to be felt, and I couldn’t get enough of his voice. One of the songs I’m most excited to hear (again) is “four ethers” ,an orchestral masterpiece filled with runs of Wise’s voice. During his actual performances, he tend to improvise a lot of his runs, making every show a unique experience.
serpentwithfeet will be performing Saturday night at Nash Hall, 12 p.m.
-Cas Saroza, Program Director
Madame Gandhi
You probably heard about the woman who free-bled at the London Marathon, right? She’s also a really neat musician and activist named Madame Gandhi, and she’s playing Hopscotch! Although it was tough to choose with the lineup this year, I’m probably most excited to see Madame Gandhi because I’ve been following her for a couple of years now, and she’s inspired me the whole time. She went on a world tour drumming for M.I.A. while simultaneously attending Harvard Business School through 2015, and she released her first EP, Voices, in late 2016. Additionally, she works with Thinx, a company which makes period underwear, and AfriPads, which produces reusable menstrual pads for people who do not have such products readily accessible. If you’re interested in activism, electronic music, hip-hop, and/or lyrics that *really make you think*, give Voices a listen! The EP is more relaxed than most music that I listen to, but I really enjoy the arrangements throughout it. I’m eager to see what her music is like live and to hear what she has to say. She plays on Friday, September 8, at 11:30pm at Nash Hall. Top tracks include “The Future is Female” and “Yellow Sea,” but they’re definitely all worth checking out!
-Ciera Cipriani, The Fuzz
The Make-Up
When Hopscotch 2017’s lineup came out, there are obviously going to be bands that everyone more or less knows. Then there are those bands that one must discover before the festival. For me, that band was The Make-Up. For many, this band might be one of those bands everyone knows, if you’re of a certain age. The Make-Up released their first album Destination: Love- Live! at Cold Rice the year I was born on the infamous punk/hardcore label Dischord Records. Funny enough, this album isn’t exactly what one might think of when they hear the words punk/hardcore. This album was released on Dischord given the band’s interesting history. Frontman Ian Svenonius and multiple other members of the Make-Up made up 80’s notorious DC hardcore band The Nation of Ulysses. Politically, both bands share a very similar message. Sonically, they are in two different playing fields. The Make-Up will be a band to witness this September at Hopscotch as politics are their bread and butter, right next to making a unique blend of funky, gospel tinged post-punk. They wear their communist, leftist leanings well on their sleeves and are sure to have a few things to say about the current political landscape plaguing America right now. Rest assured, they will still sound amazing with their special live show that calls for audience participation and takes many cues from gospel performances. Be sure to familiarize yourself with this band as they take the City Plaza stage Friday night right before local legends Future Islands.

Left to Burn Part 1/15
In the World of Avatar, there were 112 years where the Avatar was not only unknown but absent; leaving humanity to fend for itself. Min, a non-bender who grew up during the early war helps to fill in the gaps left by history and shine a light on the reality of living through an endless war.
Mom, what’s this?” a young girl with sleek hair lifted up a crate of papers, all with delicate handwriting on sturdy paper. Most looked to be letters.
A woman with greying hair and tired eyes looked up from her work to the young girl, and she put down her quill for a moment, rolled her wrist, and smiled at the girl.
“Writings, things we collected from our trip, your brother is helping me organize them,” This led to a very pronounced huff.
“I still can’t believe you traveled without me,” she pawed over a few of the notes, “You could have just waited until I got back,”
“I know sweetheart, but I didn’t want to put you in danger,” Her mother said patiently and the girl padded to her side and leaned against her mother, scanning the words her mother had written. The fine, drying lines were an advanced style which, mere months ago she wouldn’t have recognized.
“What’s this?” She leaned down, suddenly more interested, and the woman gingerly picked up her pen once more.
“Just some things I don’t want to forget, here pull up a chair, you can read as I write,”
The girl lifted one of the finished pages and frowned.
“Is this a sad story?”
“Parts of it are, yes, but it’s all important,” She told her daughter patiently; she steadied the paper between her the paperweights.
“Why,” the child pestered on and her mother poked the girl’s nose with the dry end of her brush.
“Because if this hadn’t happened, you and your brother wouldn’t be here,” She then read where she had left off, thought for a moment, and continued to write.
“Oh, well thanks mom, you spoiled the ending!”
I
You have to understand; I grew up when the Avatar was just a distant memory, a symbol swiftly falling out of modern thought. I was born a few years after his death and would have been around the next avatars’ age but no one knew what exactly happened to him, or her. The previous one however, I learned much about him from those who knew his reign.
The story of his demise had been well circulated, killed by a volcanic eruption on his home island. He was an average avatar from what my mother told me; a bit preoccupied with the Fire nations wishes of global war. Despite the cause of his death, I, like many others, suspected foul play—The idea the Avatar’s home island just erupted and only a few weeks later Sozin decides to invade Earth Kingdom waters? You don’t need to be a genius to smell the salmon-eel stench of that happenstance.
So the few memories I have of my early childhood don’t involve that spiritual master in particular. My earliest memories were painted with more orange and yellow than with red and burgundy.
When I was small, my mother used to take me to trade in the city. In those days, it would be mostly peasants, dirt farmers and wandering merchants looking for a few takers to their wares. We never had much, and what we had we conserved until it broke down, from clothes to farm equipment. The precious little surplus we had, well that’s where the market came in. My mother would carry my brother in a sling on her back and tell me to stay at her side as we pushed trough the crowds, my arms filled with the excess vegetables or bread. These were our bartering chips to the interested takers, few that there were.
We would walk past the other women with their children selling beans, and rice- we had just enough of our own, and the merchants- we could never afford their luxuries, and the dirt farmers with their grain. In the old days, our destination was always the same, as was the fight to get there.
Set up in their usual lot were the nomads. Dressed not in greens and greys, but bright oranges, sunny yellows, and rust reds, sometimes with bight sky blue arrows on their temples and arms. They were always smiling as they tried to fairly trade with the cranky women and their screaming babies. My mother would tell me to watch how they moved, to notice how they looked around at us common folk as equals though they could leap away to their temples like spirits conquering the sky. She would always be very respectful, bowing even when they told her they were just trying to trade. They sold fruit pies, and they were always the best you’ve ever tasted. I remember begging my plants some nights before market days to grow faster just so we could have something else to trade with, just to taste the pies once more.
They always accepted vegetables, you see, they were strictly vegetarians and never seemed to shy away from trading their pies for a few more beets, carrots and peas. I remember one woman with dark brown hair cascading into a bun down her back laughing as she took our eggplants and tomatoes in exchange for a fruit pie. She had striking eyes, more brown than grey- an odd trait for an air nomad. She saw me and smiled, not knowing what to do, I hid behind my mother’s skirts. The woman bent and handed me a leechee nut, still smiling at me. I took it and she told me that she had a little boy, perhaps a few years older than me and that he was growing up away from her, she told me seeing other little ones reminded her of his smile. She tucked the eggplants and tomatoes into a basket under their table and winked at me as my mother walked away with our treasure.
They lived in the sky, just the opposite of the earth benders who would come around on occasion and told us to seek our fates in the land. I always thought they were full of nonsense. The land? The land gave us famine and insects to devour our crops. The land gave some of our people the ability to break and form the rocks of our earth while it left most of us high and dry, seeking sustenance from the nutrient deprived outer skin of the land’s hulking form. Being of the earth meant to be shafted, it meant holding on to everything you were given and making do with what you had.
The air on the other hand, it was like being spirits among mortals. They could all control the air; they could all depend on the wind to keep them aloft as they sought new heights, new lands, and new futures. They are the people of spirit, grace and freedom. They weren’t stuck to the earth like canyon crawlers clawing through mud.
I never told my mother how I planned to leave and seek enlightenment in the eastern temple with the women who sold the fruit pies, she would have told me to get my head out of the clouds, but that was precisely the point.
I decided when I turned sixteen that she couldn’t force me to stay any longer; I would refuse to be just another woman in town with screaming children in the market place. Unfortunately for my daydreams, however, my 16th birthday would come far too late.
I noticed on market days, the masters- the ones with tattoos- would help the younger girls to create the signature dollop on top of the pie with this grace-filled flick of the wrist. Sometimes I would make mud pies and do the same movement, just silently hoping that some hidden air-bending prowess would reveal itself. My father was part air nomad, his mother had run away with an earthbender and they two children, and neither were benders. As a result though, my father had grey eyes and lived with the hope that my brother or I would become airbenders. He didn’t live to see my brother fail to airbend so perhaps he died with some unfulfilled hope.
At the age of ten, my mother sent me into town alone with our basket of kale and rutabagas and I traded a teenage girl for a pie. I looked at her and smiled, she didn’t have her tattoos yet so I knew she wasn’t a master but I watched in awe as she inflated the cream with the spin of her wrist.
I asked her if she was going to be a master soon and she bashfully replied that she was still a few years off. The line was short so I took my time collecting the pie and watching her as she put away the vegetables. I almost told her my plan but I was still so young and they were still so impressive, I was too shy and I told my self I would always have next time.
The walk back home was filled with possibilities and I watched the sky as I always did in the old days, waiting for a sky bison to make his way peacefully across the clouds. I like to imagine that one day, if I were patent, they would glide down on their orange gliders and take me away. I would sit outside after all of my chores were done and wait for a herd to pass by, I would try to see if there were any people like me, a normal citizen just randomly selected to become air nomads and live in the sky. I’m not quite sure what I would have done differently had I known for a fact that I could become an air nomad, perhaps run away?
Instead, I padded dutifully back to our small cottage, a wooden lodge surrounded by a thicket of trees, to deliver our pie back to my mother. My brother was picking corn in the late summer afternoon sun and waved as soon as he saw me. He ran out to see the pie I got- peach- and to try and steal a dollop of cream.
“See any bison?” I asked excitedly-it’s our current past time-he smacked his forehead.
“I forgot! I think the piglets are big enough to bring to market though,”
That’s the kind of thing he remembered, his chores. Cho and I shared many things, but priorities were never among them.
When I entered our homestead, mother was looking and fingering though our meager funds. After our father died, we couldn’t use all of our land to it’s full potential, so we were selling it slowly to bigger families.
She smiled at me when she saw the pie, and insisted we dig into it before dinner. She kissed me on the forehead and took the pie to the kitchen for slicing.
My mother was always the bravest person I knew, I suppose I tried to follow in her footsteps but, then and even now, I don’t think I ever lived up to her. As she sliced into the pie, she looked out the window and by chance spotted an air bison. She called me over and we watched it as it disappeared into the clouds.
She never told me out right, but I always assumed she wanted to live in the clouds just as much as I did. She spent too much time on the ground though, and her daydreams were too caked with mud to see much more than her small town and my father’s picturesque grey eyes.
He had been dead for almost 5 years by the end of that summer and his memory was never particularly revered. There had been a cough; he didn’t make it though the winter. On one morning of the vigil, there was a nock on our door and a weepy looking Air sister came in with a lovely bouquet of white cascading flowers. My mother made tea and the woman told us that our father was her nephew.
My mother and the Elderly sister spoke for a very long time until the sun soaked the horizon in pink. She told us that she would keep our family in her meditations and prayers, and she pulled a small spinner from her vestments and handed it to me as she left, commenting on how I had his eyes
At the table my brother ate with his mouth open and my mother heaped another serving on my plate without me having to ask.
“You need to eat more dear, I swear you never eat enough,”
“I eat plenty,” I complained and continued eating my pie, my brother pointed out of the window.
“There’s one! “
We all looked as a few bison glide past, and my mother released a sigh.
She never told either of us, but I always assumed she liked the pies because they reminded her of dad.
A.N. That’s it for part one, I hope you enjoyed!
