Building on the authoritative text of the first edition, ''Atlas of African-American History, Revised Edition'' chronicles the important cultural, historical, political, and social experiences of African Americans through the years.
Completely updated and revised, this fascinating book features numerous full-color maps - 18 of which are new - that engage readers with easy-to-grasp facts, figures, and images of everyday life. Ten new black-and-white photographs, eight new full-color photographs, and four line illustrations enliven the text.
Coverage includes: The dramatic 1839 journey of the Amistad, including its successful slave rebellion; The labor activism of Albert and Lucy Parsons, an interracial couple who led the eight-hour-day movement and the national railroad strike; The accomplishments of Matthew Henson, who, with Robert Peary, discovered the North Pole in 1909; The post - World War II influences that drove the economic rise of a new black middle class; analysis of how the cultural contributions of writers, actors, athletes, musicians, and other artists helped define American culture during the 1960s and 1970s; The rise of hip-hop and rap from a local South Bronx phenomenon into a powerful industry capable of launching other businesses.
The coverage also includes: Demographic profiles of the health, education, employment, income, spending habits, homeownership, and other benchmarks of African Americans, as well as how these compare with those of other Americans; The powerful role of theater, comedy, TV, and film in presenting and shaping the image of African Americans from the mid-1970s to the mid-1990s; and The persistent social, racial, and economic issues that still confront America, as highlighted by Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.

The Monarch & the Ambassador; Zukka
This is a design of adult Zuko and Sokka as Fire Lord and a representative of the Watertribe. I took inspiration from different historic/indigenous cultures that fit the respective designs of the Water Tribe and Fire Nation.
Here’s a close-up of their upper bodies:

ATLA (zukka….) au where everything is mostly the same except that the phrase “friend of the Avatar” is a euphemism for being gay, a la the phrase friend of Dorothy
(the phrase started towards the start of the 100 year war because in this universe Avatar Roku was some flavor of gay, then Sozin canonically banned gay marriage after their situationship went downhill. so people had to be more subtle about communicating their identities, something something something, the phrase became semi-commonplace throughout the fire nation and later the earth kingdom. maybe it started even earlier because of bi queen kyoshi. who knows!)
miscommunication and self-discovery ensues throughout the events of ATLA:
early on into his banishment and search for the avatar, Zuko runs into someone who casually mentions that they’re a “friend of the Avatar” and he’s immediately like “THE AVATAR IS ALIVE? WHERE ARE THEY. TELL ME”
…he learns a new phrase that day! perhaps he didn’t even know gay people existed until that awkward encounter (bc sheltered fire nation royal.) maybe he does some self reflection at this point, or perhaps he puts off his sexuality crisis in favor of his avatar hunting mission. who’s to say?
(the next time he hears someone say they’re “a friend of the avatar” he asks if they’re gay or if they actually know the avatar. you know, just in case they actually do.
….and the next time after that, too.
but after that he catches on pretty quickly that, no, it’s REALLY just a turn of phrase, and he does not repeat the mistake again.)
+ early into the series events sokka runs into some confusion when he mentions to a stranger that he’s a friend of the avatar while aang isn’t around—
sokka: hey so uhh i’m actually a friend of the avatar… think i can get a discount for that??
kindly ally shopkeeper: oh! i love that for you!! you know, i have a cousin who’s gay, real swell guy. anyways about the discount—
book one sokka, canonically sexist and with perhaps a fragile masculinity: what wait a sec, IM NOT GAY??????
shopkeeper: oh that’s okay, you don’t have to explain yourself or put a label on it to me (:
(sokka does in fact get a discount.)
he walks back to katara who was waiting for him and overheard the whole conversation, and she says “you know, sokka, it’s fine if you like boys.” sokka responds as you’d expect he would at this time.
(some amount of time later, sokka comes up to katara and aang very nervously and says “hey guys. i think i might. um. be a friend of the Avatar.”
and aang, confused but enthusiastic, goes “aww buddy, we’re already friends!!!!”)
at some point they’re fighting Zuko and during a back-and-forth exchange, Sokka proclaims “i won’t let you hurt him, the Avatar is my friend!” or something to that effect
Zuko, who has learned from his past mistakes in misconstruing this phrase, says “love is love. but your sexuality will not stop me from capturing the Avatar”

Thinking about how popular Mai would've been if she were a boy. Like, can you imagine?people would've swooned over her like they swoon over, idk, Jet—it just occured to me that I like her because she's so unconventional for a female character.
Girls like Mai exist in real world—but women are rarely allowed to be complex and three dimensional and grey in fiction.
I would argue that Mai is a grey character; she did start out as Azula's lackey. And well, that's a fictional girl; I found her apathy stan-worthy.
I love that she constantly has a bitch face. She cracks dry/dark jokes. Wears black. Is mysterious and stoic. Does everything she can to disregard authority/even though she's not confrontational about it. (There's one difference. Bad boys are usually very confrontational).
All these characteristics exist in popular male characters. (Except for one thing that I've noticed: most of these “bad boy” characters are volatile and yet, are described as broody/stoic, like, dude. That ain't stoic, that's so emotional.)
So yeah. Coming back to Mai. Imagine if she were a boy.
A boy who's apathetic and has no passion for anything. A boy who's constantly bored/a thrill-seeker/has nothing he cares about. A boy who has a shutter for a face and rarely expresses himself, is amazing with knives and hand-to-hand combat and is gloomy.
There's nothing he cares about because caring gets people hurt and everyone wants something and is two-faced so it's safe to be a mask of indifference. Until—hold on—until he meets a passionate, hot-headed girl who's ✨ different ✨and if not anything, wears her heart on her sleeve/is an open book...
Yes, I'm talking about Zuko.
...and oh, oh, would you look at that? Now he has something to fight for!
I mean, for Mai, Zuko (after Ty Lee) is the only other person in front of whom she can be herself.
Reminds me of “he's only nice to her” trope. Sorry.
“You're so beautiful when you hate the world.”
“I don't hate you.”
Just imagine Mai as a boy. People would eat it up. They don't like her 'cause she's a girl.

A Kind of Magic inbetween acoustics🎤
After a few months of work, I’m pleased to reveal this piece I worked for @go-minisode-minibang, which is my version of them attending the 1985 Live Aid concert! Along this is a fic created by the wonderful Alex (@/rollinggaywriter on Ao3), we hope you enjoy some ineffable husbands fluff and longing, smitten stares🥺
Bonus: a bit of sketches I did for this era! Thought I’d do a bit more of a modern take for aziraphale’s 80s styling (just for the sake of the concert hehe)

also like why r ppl confused about the technological jump in lok it’s literally the same as happened irl. avatar takes place in the rough equivalent to the mid 1800s, it’s not medieval or anything. lok takes place roughly equivalent to the early 1900s. that is, in fact, what happened irl in the seventy odd years between, say 1850 and 1920. like it’s literally just historically accurate.

[I’m being grumpy about knowing too much about the histories of various royal families again don’t mind me]
Seeing a whole post about the absurdity of Zuko being firelord that takes his being seventeen as the most absurd element and I’m just sitting here massaging my temples bc like listen. Look. I get that having a seventeen year old running a country is not actually a good idea. But that doesn’t mean it hasn’t, historically, happened kind of a lot

Still thinking about that post I saw right after the live action atla came out where someone said "they introduced Zuko's backstory TOO EARLY" and I'm sitting there like "bruh. Iroh tells the crew how he got his scar in episode 10 of season 1. They definitely did not bring it up too early" 😂

Historical Atlas of the North Pacific Ocean: Maps of Discovery and Scientific Exploration 1500–2000
Derek Hayes
British Museum Press 2001
Derek Hayes has authored many books of maps, and it shows. This one is much better. More maps, more specific, more detail images, and it includes incidental illustrations documenting voyages. Featuring maps from the voyages of Sir Frances Drake, James Cook, George Vancouver, Matthew Perry, the first sonar map of the Pacific, physiographic diagrams of undersea topography, plate tectonics, tsunami maps, satellite images, and hundreds more, this book covers over 500 years of people trying to understand the North Pacific rim.
