Financial independence! No small thing.
Mrs. Ellen Gertrude Tompkins Kidd, creator of the famous Pin-Money Pickles, vice president and treasurer of the Virginia League of Women Voters, and resident of the entire sixth floor of the Shenandoah Building.
In 1868, 16 year-old Ellen Tompkins began making delicious award-winning pickles in her Richmond kitchen. In 1873 she founded Pin-Money Pickles, a thriving business that she ran until 1925. Pin-Money Pickles could be purchased at “leading grocers everywhere!” and were served at the White House, on Pullman Railroad Cars, and at restaurants across the nation.
Lillian Whitney Babcock of Boston described Pin-Money Pickles as “made from very small cucumbers which are covered with sharp points like a baby porcupine.”

Funniest error ever in historical fiction TO ME as someone who is rlly into 18th century history is when an author obviously thinks "breeches" is just a fancy antiquated word for trousers. why are the breeches of a character in this book set in 1845 I'm reading allegedly brushing the tops of his shoes rn
#PSA for my fellow writers please google historical fashion terms before using them because if someone who actually knows what they mean#comes across them & u have used them incorrectly they will laugh. like how fucking long are these breeches#anyway don't ask me what the book is I refuse to clarify. but to b clear it's not castle richmond#reading#jory.txt

Poe Museum, Shockhoe Bottom, Richmond, 1987.
The high rise in the distance, a state government office building, was new when the photo was taken. That building is now deemed obsolete and is slated for demolition. The Poe museum, by contrast, is housed in a structure built about 1740, and the museum itself is about to celebrate its centenary.

Ruins of Richmond castle
Richmond Castle in Richmond, North Yorkshire, England, stands in a commanding position above the River Swale, close to the centre of the town of Richmond. It was originally called Riche Mount, 'the strong hill'. The castle was constructed by Alan Rufus from 1071 onwards following the Norman Conquest of England, and the Domesday Book of 1086 refers to 'a castlery' at Richmond.
In the 12th century, his great-nephew Conan expanded the castle and built the keep. Although it was derelict by 1540, it was restored centuries later. The property is the best-preserved early Norman castle in England and an important tourist attraction.

✩🪡🐈Review:
This historical romance is absolute perfection!
Since his return from the war, the Duke of Ashbury is in need wife. Enter Emma Gladstone, a vicar’s daughter turned seamstress. When she conveniently appears in his library wearing his former fiancé’s wedding gown demanding payment, he decides she’ll do.
I loved watching Emma and Ash’s marriage of convenience slowly turn into something real! In the beginning, Ash was determined to keep them apart by creating rules so that they wouldn’t fall in love. I knew from their first interaction, however, that his plans would fall apart because their chemistry is undeniable! Emma is stubborn and sees right through the walls that Ash puts up. Their intelligent, humorous personalities spark a connection between them that only strengthens as they help each other embrace their insecurities.
I was pleasantly surprised by how comedic this book is! Emma and Ash’s banter was incredibly entertaining and made me laugh out loud at times. If you’re looking for a historical romance that is reminiscent of Beauty and the Beast with both steam and humor, then this is your book! I was hooked from the first page and am convinced it was written for me!

his favorite thing about living in richmond?
honestly, there’s a lot of things. beard adores the closer knit community, especially after he moved in with ted in ted’s neighborhood. he likes going on his daily coffee shop trip, interacting with his familiar baristas and everything. he loves taking long walks around, taking note of the scenery and locations (and sometimes if he walks too far, he’ll take the tube back)……and yeah. he’s biased, but beard loves going to matches. he LOVES football matches and rugby games and cricket and all of that, he truly will make an entire day of seeing various sports matches.
#mobile. this is your planet speaking.#I mean beard does love Richmond. like a lot. he loves Richmond green. he loves the food (even though he carries around hot sauce with him)#the owners and workers of local establishments that he frequents#being able to go to sooo many games (being a coach does help)#the history of richmond and local areas (historical and musical and literature etc)

Taking a walk through the grounds of the Virginia State Capitol is a great experience with architecture, monuments, memorials, and tons of stately trees to take in. I’m planning more strolls around the Virginia State Capitol grounds for more photos. While transitioning, its play tourist exploring the surrounding downtown Richmond neighborhoods.
