So, yours anonymously truly has been snooping around Wikipedia, and I see that Hiruko isn’t the only abandoned child! Izanagi and Izanami had other children they cast aside, along with “unblemished” children they chose to keep.
This raises the question: in the LC universe, does Hiruko have siblings? If so, will we get the chance to meet them? What’s their relationship like? Haha, I hope this isn’t an odd question—I’m just really intrigued!
Great question!
As far as this story goes, Hiruko is acting on his own without involving his siblings. While conceptualizing the story, I briefly considered having one of them ally with Keiko to work against Hiruko, but there are certain plot points (yet to be revealed) that made this idea difficult to justify. This character's role would have also overlapped quite a bit with the role Cleo fills, so it felt superfluous from a storytelling POV as well. The role is best filled by Cleo, so that's what we've got. :D
Will other deities from Japanese myth make an appearance, however? That's a big mystery, and we'll have to wait and see! But Hiruko's goals may provide a clue to where his story eventually leads the Not Quites, so keep those peepers peepin'. :)
As for their relationship, that's another very good question. We've learned a little bit about the construction of Spirit World in LC, namely that it's incredibly vast. I think his relationships with his siblings are extremely distant, mainly because they only talk once in a blue moon.
Not a whole lot, I don't think? The cool thing about myth and legend is that there's a lot of room for interpretation, and some of Hiruko's origins are disputed or overlap with other gods, so going with any one version of it over another feels like someone could accuse you of taking liberties even when you're just using different (but still valid) details. There's a bit of room to play, as a result, but I don't think I strayed very far from the roots of his origin myth in the end. Cast out as a kid, god of luck and fishermen... I didn't really change that, and that feels like the core of him. The rest is cosmetic, really.
Thanks so much for the ask! Have an amazing day!

So I made a Sasori-themed amigurumi gift set for @lordkuronekosama a little while back. (Alive-version Sandaime stayed with me, he was just a bonus to see if I could make his outfit work.) Sharing here because I was genuinely delighted with how these little guys came out and because Sasori always needs more love (and more hugs).
[Scorpion slightly adapted from pattern by PatternToyBySandy on Ravelry; puppets, mini scorpion and sign all designed by me.]

Inktober day 12: Tenebrous
In a move no one was expecting, except maybe the people around for Tuesday sketches a few years ago, I’ve drawn Hiruko from Nightmare Inspector: Yumekui Kenbun by Shin Mashiba. It is yet another beloved manga from my childhood. I cannot express how much this manga shaped the kind of horror I enjoy. Or how much it made me cry. One can only be impressed when an author boils you like a frog with their narrative and leaves you contemplating the ending and its meaning for days. Since Darkness itself is a later prompt I wanted to go for the more conceptual meaning of obscure. The meaning of nightmares in the manga is obscure and shadowy if not outright enigmatic which fits well with the word tenebrous. Not to mention the mystery of the past and present in the story. It was fun to draw the nightmares and use cell shading to get a harsher look.

howd u come up with hiruko's character design :)
Most of the design was inspired by the mythological figure I based him on. I just tailored elements of his real-world history so they fit into the larger tapestry of LC and its themes.
Hiruko (AKA Ebisu) is one of the Seven Gods of Fortune. As a consequence of originating in Japan, he is the only one who doesn't have any Buddhist/Taoist influence. I gave him pink hair as a nod to Japanese cherry blossoms and his purely Japanese origin. The symbolic meaning of cherry blossoms in Japan ties into Hiruko's history and motivations nicely.
One of his many names is "the laughing god," which is why I nearly always depict him smiling and laughing.
I dressed him in traditional Japanese fashion because of his connection to ancient Japanese history.
Because he's known as the god of fishermen, I gave him a fishing hook earring hanging from a thread of fishing line. Given his connection to the Fates and their weaving within the context of LC, I liked the inclusion of thread in his character design. It was a way to marry his design with the item(s) he stole from the Fates. Webs/weaving/thread/tapestry are a big part of his role in LC, and it's one of the motifs I lean on when writing about him.
Since he is both the god of fisherman AND luck, I dressed him in red, which is known as an auspicious or lucky color in many East Asian cultures. It's also a color very commonly found in Shinto temples and is said to scare away evil spirits, so I thought he'd wear that color to try and signal to whoever saw him that he's a "good guy" and not a villain.
But that's also why I gave him blue eyes. In kabuki theater, blue is the color of villainous characters as well as the supernatural world, so they're a clue about his role in the story. Ocean blue eyes also connect back to the "god of fishermen" origin. Blue denoting the supernatural has some plot relevance as well.
Aaaand I guess the last notable trait I gave him was initial appearance of a child. This was partially inspired by Koenma, of course, who can change between a childish and adult appearance at will. A huge part of the Ebisu legend involves him being abandoned as a child, and I wanted a direct callout to that history from his first appearance. (I also think he took that form so people would underestimate him.)
That's the bulk of it, I think. Basically all of the most important bits come right out of Japanese culture and Hiruko/Ebisu's history.
Thanks for asking!

(1/2) theory: NQK swapped places with the "real"/in-universe Star Charter that wrote Lucky Child. adds another layer of meta (lol) although where does Hiruko fit? hmmm maybe Star Charter is unwittingly manipulating HIruko which means that Star Charter is a maker 😨
Anon sent these asks back in October of 2020. They're super interesting, and while I can't confirm or deny anything, I just wanted to say they're extremely interesting and I love this idea!
You know how much I love meta. Clearly there's something weird going on with stories and Hiruko and the Makers and the entire world being based on something fictional, and I can't wait to share all the gory details when we get to the right moment!
I love hearing y'all's theories. There are SO MANY in my inbox I've never answered because I don't know how to respond to half of them without spoilers, but I may just start posting them with some emoji responses so everyone can share in how amazing these theories are. Keep 'em coming, and thanks for sending this!
