Sailor Moon Rewatch Week 17 (April 22-28)
061: Usagi Devastated: Mamoru Declares a Break-Up
Tumblr media
Mamoru breaks up with Usagi. But itā€™s like, a fake-out, right? Itā€™s resolved by the end of the episode, right? HE HAS A CLEAR MOTIVE FOR DOING IT, RIGHT??
062: A Guardian's Friendship: Goodbye, Ami
Tumblr media
Ami is given an amazing opportunity to study her dream field of medicine! The only catch is sheā€™d have to leave for Germany to pursue it. Can a Sailor Guardian really give up their duty so easily? And do the other Sailor Guardians have the right to stop her?
063: Women Must Be Strong and Beautiful: Rei's New Special Technique
Tumblr media
Self-defence classes for women are a great idea! But while Grandpa Hino might be a skilled fighter, his motivation for hosting all-female martial arts classes at the shrine might beā€¦ less than selfless? Rei tries to warn him about the new attendees whoā€™ve started to take over his course, but heā€™s too smitten to listen.
64: In Search of the Silver Crystal: Chibi-Usa's Secret
Tumblr media
Ever have those weeks where it feels like itā€™s been pouring non-stop? The weather means bad news for the Usagis, both terrified of thunder. While the other Guardians shelter indoors, Mamoru and Usagi are forced to search for Chibi-Usa out in the storm, whose heightened fear triggers a bizarre phenomenon and attracts unwanted attention.

Goodbye Grandpa Hino
Written for Sailor Moon Platonic Week.
Day 3: Loss.Ā
----
It had only been a few days since the passing of Grandpa Hino. It shouldnā€™t have come as a surprise. With his heart condition, it was somewhat miraculous thatĀ heā€™d lived as long as he had, although he attributed it to a good diet and exercise. No, it should not have come as a surpriseā€¦ but that didnā€™t make it hurt any less.
Rei sat in the central area of the now very quiet Hikawa Shrine. In the days since his passing her friends had tried to offer words of comfort, but Rei had closed herself off. She hadnā€™t returned any of their calls, and whenever they came to visit she just told them that she was doing fine, but that she needed them to leave so she could deal with funeral preparations. She didnā€™t need them there.Ā
She was fine.
She saw the silhouette of someone approaching the front door and went to open it before they even had a chance to knock. She opened the door to reveal Makoto standing there, holding a basket and an umbrella to protect herself from the rain.
ā€œHey. Can I come in?ā€ She asked.
ā€œSure. You canā€™t stay too long, though, Iā€™ve got stuff to do.ā€
She didnā€™t.
Mako stepped inside, closing her umbrella and hanging it up.
ā€œWhat are you doing here?ā€ Rei asked as they made their way to Reiā€™s room.
ā€œI just wanted to come check up on you. See how you were doing.ā€ Mako said, sitting down on Reiā€™s bed.
ā€œOh great, sheā€™s sitting.ā€ Rei thought to herself, wanting to get this over with as quickly as possible, ā€œIā€™m fine. What is it you have there?ā€ She asked, gesturing toward the basket.
ā€œJust some food. When was the last time you ate?ā€ The green-eyed girl asked, setting the basket down and looking up at the raven-haired girl.
ā€œ... not too long ago.ā€ Rei muttered, not meeting her friendā€™s gaze.
Makoto opened her mouth to question her, but that was rendered unnecessary when Reiā€™s stomach growled, betraying her lie.
ā€œ... look, I just havenā€™t been hungry, okay?ā€ Rei defended, getting more and more tense.
ā€œI get that.ā€ Makoto said, standing up as it seemed her friend had no intention of sitting down next to her, ā€œBut you still need to eat. You canā€™t just-ā€
ā€œDonā€™t tell me what I can and canā€™t do!ā€ Rei snapped, ā€œI appreciate the food, but I need you to leave. I have-ā€
ā€œThings to do? Forgive me if I find that hard to believe.ā€ Makoto said, holding her composure, ā€œLook, I understand youā€™re upset but-ā€
ā€œUpset? Upset?! Donā€™t talk to me like you know how I feel! None of you do! None of you couldā€¦ possiblyā€¦ā€ Rei petered off, realizing just who she was talking to.
ā€œI do. Thatā€™s why Iā€™m here. Thought it might help to talk to someone who knows what youā€™re going through.ā€ Mako said, making her way closer to Rei.
ā€œI appreciate it Mako, but Iā€™m-ā€ Rei began, trying her best to repress her emotions.
ā€œYouā€™re really gonna try and tell me youā€™re fine after that?ā€
ā€œIā€¦ Iā€¦ā€ Rei began, tears beginning to well up in her eyes as all the feelings she repressed began to come to the surface.
Makoto wrapped her arms around Rei, pulling her into a hug. As much as she had tried to fight against it, the raven-haired girl finally broke down into tears.
ā€œItā€™s okayā€¦ itā€™s okayā€¦ just let it out.ā€ Mako said, holding her close.
ā€œI justā€¦ heā€¦ Iā€¦ā€ Was all Rei could muster between sobs.
ā€œI knowā€¦ I knowā€¦ā€ Mako cooed.
ā€œDoes it everā€¦ does itā€¦?ā€ Rei tried to ask, but her green eyed friend got the gist of it.
ā€œIt does. Not completely. A part of you will always miss themā€¦ youā€™ll see, or hear, or even smell something that reminds you of them andā€¦ but each time that happens it gets a little easier.ā€
ā€œIā€™m s-sorry for-ā€
ā€œI knowā€¦ we knowā€¦ itā€™s okay. Weā€™re here for you.ā€ Mako said, looking down at Rei.
The shrine maiden cried for a bit longer before finally collecting herself, and leaving Makotoā€™s embrace, ā€œThank you Makoā€¦ for coming hereā€¦ and for the food.ā€ She said, rubbing her belly a bit, ā€œI donā€™t know if I could live off granola bars for much longer.ā€ She said with a weak smile.
ā€œOf course, I can heat it up for you if-ā€ Mako said, going for the basket, but Rei beat her to it and picked it up.
ā€œNo need. Butā€¦ if you wanted to stay and help me eat it, I wouldnā€™t mind that.ā€
A small smile appeared on Makoā€™s face. It had been many years since she lost her parents, but she remembered the most important lesson she learned from that was to embrace life. To enjoy it to the fullest extent with the people around her. And she hoped she could help her friend learn the same lesson from this.
ā€œYeah, thatā€™d be nice.ā€
----
Real quick, Iā€™m aware Rei also lost her mother, but (and correct me if Iā€™m wrong) I had always gathered that Mako had gotten to spend a bit more time with her parents than Rei.
And that does it for Day three. Come back tomorrow for Day 4: Future. Iā€™ve got a fun one cooked up, so hopefully youā€™ll check it out.
But until then, please let me know what you thought! Comments, reblogs, likes, etc. are much appreciated!
And until next time, take care everyone!

CATCHING MY BREATH, STARING OUT AN OPEN WINDOW
Rei Hino is based on Rei Hino from Sailor Moon. She is a 27 year old super human, holistic therapist and uses she/her pronouns. She has the power of shinto mysticism and fire manipulation. Rei is portrayed by Komatsu Nana and she is taken.
CATCHING MY DEATH, AND I COULDNā€™T BE SURE
Right from the moment she woke up in Evermore, Rei knew this was no regular place. Though she was far away from her grandpa and the Hikawa Shrine, it did little to dull her senses; she could feel the strange energy coming from all corners of the town, masked by seemingly normal folk going on with their day-to-day life. She tried to ignore it, to shake it off as some weird feeling but the longer she stayed in Evermore, the harder it became to pretend things weren't off. In any case, these were the cards she'd been dealt and there must be a reason why she was brought here, so might as well make the most of it! With the boom of social media and general interest in the occult, Rei figured her knowledge, the abilities she was born with and her time as a priestess could come in handy. She quietly built a reputation as the 'real deal' when it came to holistic therapies or things pertaining to the occult, banishing dark energies and warding off evil to name a few, a shift from the cold judgment sheā€™d received so often back home. Enter Usagi Tsukino, the weirdest, silliest and most endearing client she'd ever had with the dumbest request she'd ever heard. Still, the two girls became good friends and soon enough, Rei became a part of the group. She often comes across as brash or even rude, but it comes from a place of utmost caring ā€” of wanting to protect those she holds dear. Rei knows what lurks in the darkness, and it's her mission to protect humanity from it. With a fiery personality to match her planet, Mars, Rei is a girl you don't want to mess with!
I HAD A FEELING SO PECULIAR
ā€ Antoine Lewis: Rei would never compare Antoine to her grandpa, but he's the closest she has to a family figure in this new place. They both know what it's like to be considered the fiery one but most of the time, Rei is just trying to keep her good friend in check. ā€ Brystol Utonium: The two hit it off right away, and Rei even crashed at Brystol's for a few weeks when she first arrived in Evermore. The two still keep in touch regularly, especially on Rei's days off. ā€ Luis Salgado: It's hard to pinpoint the exact moment Rei realized something wasn't right with Luis. She doesn't know much about the guy but one thing is certain: he isn't good, and he definitely isn't human.
THAT THIS PAIN WOULD BE FOR EVERMORE

For prompt mornings, Rei and Hanukkah, burning through the night? (I have some vague recollection of you saying something about Jewish Rei a very long time ago, though Iā€™m not certain Iā€™m not misremembering)
You remember correctly, but Iā€™m shocked you do! It was an answer to an ask a LONG LONG time ago, about if I had to pick a Senshi to be Jewish who would it be? Anyway, this took a lot of consideration, and is also partially based on @keyofjetwolfā€˜s drawing.Ā
Rei set the shamash candle in its place, and looked down at the menorah in front of her. She had always wondered if her connection with the fire had come from this tradition, this story. She had always loved it, how everything had been defiled in the temple, how the oil should never have burned on and lasted, but it did, and from that moment on, the Jewish people saw more in the flame than light. There was a miracle and promise contained within, and Rei sometimes felt she saw those glimpses of the future in that same gift, that she felt herself in the oil that refused to give.
She had never mused on the number of candles before, or how they lit, but her life tending as it did now, she could not help but think of it in that way. Her grandfather had laughed good-naturedly at her insistence that she have a menorah in her room this year, when she had always kept it in the common area, but he did not try to stop her.
He understood so many things, and supported her keeping her motherā€™s traditions alive in so many ways, but this was another thing entirely, this was something she could not share.
She looked down at the strange menorah, now blazing in her window. Nine candles, each of them different. It would have seemed silly to anyone else, and did to her, enough that she didnā€™t want to share it with Usagi, the sparkly pink candle in the middle of her menorah.
Mina, that curvaceous orange candle, would have balked a little at her being the one to light the others, and Michiruā€™s elegant teal candle from Barneyā€™s New York would have rolled her eyes in the most elegant way possible. But it was true, whatever their protests, or at least it was true to Rei, and it was her menorah, and her Hanukkah, and her memory.
Individually, each of them lit only a small corner, but together, they lit a brilliant torch that flung light all through the room and out into the streets. Rei had not realized how much of her life had been spent in darkness before she had found them, all of them (though she might never admit that to the tall, thin candle sheā€™d found on discount) and now how she saw all the world in so much more light. How they brought that light to others. And how Usagi had lit them to their best selves.
And they would burn through the night, as long as it lasted, and though people might never know where the light that guided them had come from, Rei would look at each of these candles, and see how it had lit a path for someone. Rei had always thought it would be her bright torch, and her great fire, that would light the world, but this was so much sweeter.
This was her truest miracle of all.
