While there is zero canonical support for it, in-universe I do like the idea that Haruka is not, in fact, a gold star lesbian where Michiru Kaioh very much is for the same reasons that Willow not being one where Tara Maclay is also works well in that universe. It illustrates a broader range of queer experience and in finest Sailor Moon fashion where appearances are outwardly deceiving the butch lesbian is the one who had a boyfriend as a younger woman and the femme is the one who's the gold star 'I am for one woman'. This is one of the many layers of how storytelling works in that verse and it also amplifies some key differences between Haruka and Michiru.

That said I do use some parallels in the Harumichi and Tara/Willow relationships. In each case there's a witch associated with an element (Earth/Water in the form of the Ocean) and there's a short-haired impulsive powerhouse who is a highly aggressive semi-rabid golden retriever who will bulldoze through things 100% of the time even or especially when finesse is the better option. Equally the elemental witch has some dodgy aspects (Michiru is canonically a stalker of Haruka in the anime, which by virtue of providing a past will do where the manga didn't) and Tara almost killing the Scoobies and sabotaging demon-detection spells that might have considerably shortened the Initiative plotline and then almost killing off her family of choice, well...there are some overlaps there.

While the short-haired powerhouses equally have massive doses of angst, take on themselves burdens that are not always the wisest to bear, and have the emotional intelligence of a rock. The main distinctions are that the Outer Senshi are both equally powerful in separate ways, and that the functions of magic and its wellsprings in the Sailor Moon universe between the Galaxy Cauldron and reincarnation factor function vastly differently than the more erotically charged sorcery of the Buffyverse.

The other distinction is that Tara Maclay, at least as I write her, is only a cinnamon bun relative to the rest of the Scoobies and when the comparisons are Spike, Xander, Anya, Willow, Buffy, and the like it's not hard to be the least morally ambiguous person in that bunch. Michiru, OTOH, is a stone cold manipulator-seer who uses her powers in the right ways, but is for all that by far the most ruthless of the Outer Senshi, as Haruka is far too impulsive to actually plan something where Michiru rivals Bruce Wayne for how OP she gets with prep time.

Of the two Michiru has by far the darker elements and the two would be highly at odds, as ultimately befits that Water and Earth have some particular geological antagonisms in science and equally so as elemental sorcery, and they operate on very different moral principles. Where, too, Michiru has intended seer-sight and anything I use with that with Tara tends to be the influence of the First, which is at least a part of any take on Season 6, with her being more easily manipulated via dreams of her dead mother playing into her insecurities in a bid to ensure a plan coming together works before the first components are truly assembled that misfires because the anthropomorphic personification of evil cannot understand human complexity and flaws and because Tara loves too much to truly fall into the fuller scale of the trap on the one hand and because Willow is not, in fact, truly evil or foredoomed to fall into darkness.

In truth as I write her and Setsuna both Michiru has the exact opposite problem that with reliable seer-sight her life often feels like a scripted thing of one damn crisis after another, which is why she goes for Haruka, because the impulsive golden retriever won't let things remain so stably serene as all that.

July Camp NaNoWriMo

Another NaNo month! The next section is going to be tricky given how the last chapter was written.

First issues to tackle:

How much damage was done to the Scarlett Palace?

How badly are things going to go for Sailor Pluto?

What is going to happen with Seiya and Usagi?

I have the next five chapters outlined and I am hoping they won't be really long chapters but I tend to fail at writing short chapters.

And at the last minute.... I have changed my goal. In the next 31 days.... 60,000 words. Let's go!!!!

Hmm... wonder why this segment was subtitled Shiori. This next section will feature the scene I thought up trying to go to sleep one night in January.

It was a bad joke, Michiru being back on her feet, able to walk, before Haruka could. But everything was a bad joke, her whole life leaving that uneasy feeling in her stomach, her head, the experience of choking on your own laughter; Michiru felt like she was choking to death all the time now. There were tears dwelling under the surface constantly nowadays, like back when she discovered it, but she was much better at zipping it up by now. And still all she wanted to do was cry as she slowly walked towards Haruka’s room. Pluto had told her that she had thought about putting them in the same room, as they had shared their sickbed a long time ago. Pluto was a strange woman, she always had been, Michiru was so very sure of it. But she was right. She always was. So she had decided to separate them, “Because clearly Haruka’s not ready for that commitment.” Oh, Haruka was ready. She just had committed to a different thing. The thoughts were bitter, like salt on her tongue, as Michiru’s feet left almost no sound on the floor. She wore lacey thigh-highs, a matching nightgown and the comfort of a cozy bathrobe over it like a safe blanket. Again, no sound was heard as she opened Haruka’s door. It was so unlikely for Haruka not to move. She still slept most of the time now, her only way of running away. The beautiful mouth of her, the one Michiru wanted on her own constantly, was slightly open; she softly snored. They’ve sworn love. They’ve sworn not to be together. One of Haruka’s hand was slightly hanging out of the bed, so did one of her weak legs, therefore Michiru let her fingers ghost over Haruka’s. “I never asked for this”, Michiru murmured; burying her face in her other hand. It was not like her to break. But there should be excuses for times after you’ve died and came back to live. She hadn’t asked for being born into her family. She hadn’t asked to be a reborn Senshi. She would have been perfectly fine growing up as a middle class girl in the outskirts of Paris or maybe one of many children in Italy, admiring an athlete from overseas with short blonde hair and hunger in her eyes.

Fate (Chapters 25 - 26) - Throwback Thursday Edition

A short one this week with my favorite Rei scene, the Senator trying to play both sides of the fence, movie night (!), and some fluff to balance out the angst.

Usagi was ready and waiting when the car pulled up.  She hurried out to meet them, a small backpack over her shoulder and one of her mother’s round throw pillows in her hand.  A smile on her face, she quickly slid into the back seat with Minako.

“Hi, guys,” she said as she arranged herself and her belongings.  “Thanks for picking me up, Yuichiro.”

Yuichiro smiled into the rearview mirror at her in acknowledgement, then started to pull away.

“What’s with the pillow?” asked Rei, fighting with the seatbelt as she turned around in her seat to face the girls in the back.

“Mako-chan said they have to bring their own pillows to get comfortable with.  And, since they’re not expecting us…” she drawled out, her grin getting bigger as she took the pillow and shoved it up under her shirt.  “So we look the part in case we have any trouble getting in.”

Minako giggled while Rei rolled her eyes.  “I’m almost afraid to ask what’s in the backpack,” quipped Rei.

Usagi reached for her bag and started to rummage around inside it while she explained, “Well, like I said, they aren’t expecting us, so I figured they probably won’t have enough snacks for everyone.  I didn’t want us to get left out.”  As she said this, she began to hand items out to show what she had.  A can of orange soda, bag of grape gummies, and a box of Pocky were handed to Minako, and a can of cola along with a small, black snack bag were handed up to Rei.

Rei held the bag in front of her and gave it a shake, causing the white puffs inside to jostle and resettle.  “Popcorn?  We’re going to a baby class, Usagi, not a picnic.”

“I know that,” answered Usagi.  “But Mako-chan said tonight was movie night.”

Minako’s anger quickly turned smug. “I have an even better idea. We let Usagi decide.”

“Uh,” she said with a nervous giggle. That wasn’t exactly what she’d been going for when she suggested they talk. “I’m not so sure about that.”

“You really think that’s a good idea?” Mamoru asked, arms crossed over his chest with a confidence Usagi usually only saw when he talked about medical things. “You want my girlfriend to decide who gets to keep my cat?”

He had a point. She did tend to favor him.

“I do,” Mina replied, a wicked grin on her face. “Because I think you vastly underestimate how much she loves me.”

I love you. I'm glad you were born and that I still get to dabble in the Sailor Moon world every so often because of you.

Sailor Moon ficcage thoughts

So, I originally had access just to the Miss Dream fan translation of the manga (Sailor Moon in whole, plus Sailor V and side stories) and I do still have that. Back in the day I watched the 90's dubs on Cartoon Network though of course they never released Stars so, incomplete even if I'd managed to watch it every day.

Now, I have access to Crystal and I've watched some of it (almost the first two seasons) but I'd need a re-watch if I was to write something from it.

Now, here's the thing:

I have kicked around the idea of writing a Sailor Moon fanfic / series for an age and here's what I would do in a perfect world -- a canon divergent fic series broken up by era and driven by two things. One, a more realistic reaction of the senshi to their trauma. (Yeah automatically darker than my usual, but prime for hurt/comfort.) So that would affect their personality a (extended to Mamoru and you have so much going on between the accident that killed his parents, his loner lifestyle while somehow taking on the mantle of Tuxedo Mask chasing a dream in utter desperation.

Also unfridging the Shitennou, because they're interesting characters who deserve exploration. Also Mamoru deserves the moral support and deep friendships and because, quite frankly, I am an avid Senshi/Shitennou shipper and I want it. #good enough

I also want to explore the family bonds of the Senshi especially. There's just no way they didn't notice changes in the girls and I really like the idea of them knowing and doing something about it.
