Something interesting I discovered whilst revisiting SuperS. In the final episodes of SuperS, Luna and Artemis discuss a story they heard long ago about a witch being imprisoned by Queen Serenity, this obviously referencing Nehalenia.
However, later on Nehalenia comments that Usagi doesn't remember her and more or less says, it was she (as in, Princess Serenity) who sealed her away. We even get a brief shot of Princess Serenity with the Golden Crystal (in the anime this is not Mamoru's crystal):
Tumblr media
This is really interesting lore.
On the one hand, we could just argue everyone's SilMil memories are hazy and leave it at that. On the other hand we could interpret and extrapolate a few things from this:
a) In SuperS, Usagi believed she was the one who needed to wield the Golden Crystal, but actually it was Chibi-Usa (or maybe both of them as they are both sort of holding it in the penultimate SuperS episode). So both times Nehelenia was defeated, it was by the youngest royal, not the eldest. Perhaps this is tied in with the SuperS arc revolving around children? Maybe QS found she was unable to beat Nehalenia on her own, just as Usagi did, only for their respective daughters to be the key to saving the day.
b) If we overindulge in the fact that Chibi-Usa and Usagi were holding the Golden Crystal, the fact that everything in this season in terms of their powers revolves around them doing things together (transforming, posing, doing their finishing moves, etc) could this mean that when Serenity used the Golden Crystal in the SilMil she was perhaps...pregnant!!!!!!?????? Probably not, but it's fun to think of the political scandal that'd cause back then.
c) This sort of implies Luna and Artemis joined Queen Serenity's court a long time after Nehalenia's defeat, and when Princess Serenity was already a teenager, or the equivalent of a teenager for Lunarians.
d) For some reason the 'official' story is that Queen Serenity defeated Nehelenia instead of Princess Serenity. Why? Maybe, if history did repeat itself Queen Serenity and princess Serenity were both holding the Golden Crystal, therefore history kind of got conflated, going from 'Queen Serenity & Princess Serenity saved the day' to 'Queen Serenity saved the day'. Or, maybe it was a cover up? The Golden Crystal, being connected to Earth, it would have strained Earth/Moon politics if the Princess of the Moon used this Earth artefact, or perhaps having Queen Serenity be the one to use it re-affirmed her dominance of the Earth? Or again, Princess Serenity using it might have raised questions about just how 'close' she was to the Earth...or specific people from Earth????????
e) If we accept that Usagi has all her past life memories, why doesn't she remember Nehalenia? Was she too young? Was it traumatic and she repressed the memory? Or did someone, perhaps her mother, erase or rewrite her memories? Let's remember, we know from Sailor Moon season 1 and R that the Silver Crystal can not only resurrect and reincarnated you, but also reset your memory too. Moreover, Luna can restore your memories too.
Curiouser, and curioser, eh?

My outrage given voice: ChibiUsa has always rubbed me the wrong way; since her introduction even
For me, it wasn't the sound of her voice (though I do agree that it could be annoying at times, no offense to her English VA) it was her attitude. Being a child should not excuse her behavior, especially when considering the canon that despite her appearance she's over 900 years old, however that's supposed to work. It's the fact that she tries her hardest to try to ruin Usa's life.
So happy that Mamo tries to keep Usa away from him despite letting Chibi, who lives with Usa, close until he can't. Trying to make the girls question and doubt why Usa's friends with them in probable hopes they'll "see the light"; that they shouldn't be friends with her in the first place and ditch her. Does her best to get Usa in trouble with her family and tends to succeed. Not to mention the trouble she keeps getting into despite being given rules to keep her safe but it's Usa who gets the flack for it because she's "not looking after Chibi right" or when she needs some form of discipline, for breaking said rules meant to keep her safe as an example, she manipulates the situation to make Usa the over-reacting scapegoat, or the trouble she got into leads to 'thank god everyone's alright' feelings and gets off scot-free.
Hell, once she learned Usa was SM, she lost all admiration and respect she had for her childhood idol and stole the SC first chance she had to take back to the future and the resulting catastrophe could've gotten the others, and her own Mother (though no one knew that yet) killed and her existence erased, or at least transported/sent to another time where she'd have a chance to exist as a certain Timey-wimey shenanigans HC dictates.
'Cause I've always hated that. That sense that UsaMamo "has no choice" but to stay together to make CT happen and bring Chibi into the world, despite being SoulMates and thus of course will happen no matter what the future holds so long as they work between them to stay and choose to be together. I believe it's the reason for so much anti-UsaMamo. The illusion of 'no choice'. If that Arc hadn't included any concrete facts of children between the two or how many Senshi might've been active or any other probable family members, Usa's kidnapping by Diamond the reason they're forced to go to the future by way of Pluto instead of Chibi leading them there, and Pluto warning them that the future wasn't set in stone and just seeing what they have might change it into something else just before they return to their time would've led to more or less the breathing room of 'our future might be better, it might be worse, or it might simply be different but we have the power to choose. It doesn't have to be that way.' Because, without concrete proof or proper attachments in the form of a child they've interacted with and the warning this future was only a possible future, there's no sense that they have only one path to follow and heaven, hell and the Powers-That-Be help you if anyone try to cause it to deviate.
Because some people get the sense that CT is in truth some form of dystopia, not actually a utopia, but because it's being told from the perspective of the Good Guys after being attacked by the Bad Guys trying to change the future, it can be considered a 'non-issue' because they triumph over the time-traveling intruders to their peace. And I can also get how such a perspective can be reached. One could say that the SC brainwashed, despite the many times being shown of cleansing brainwashing and corruption and possession, all but the progenitors of the BMC into letting Ren and Dymi rule the planet, or that such power cowed them into doing it, despite the fact that there's no reason for either Usa or Mamo to want to rule the entire planet; not even because it's Mamo's birthright as heir to the planetary throne/wielder of the GC. They were perfectly happy to live as civilians until SM was needed. And the Senshi, numbering four with Pluto as the 'secret' fifth instead of the eight there actually is if one excludes Moon, seem to be nothing but bodyguards to the Royal Family with no other life goals, spouses or children as evidenced by Chibi always feeling/being alone in the palace when out of adult sight with only a kitten and a toy she uses to speak with Puu without having to head for the Gate for a friend, despite the varying dreams of their youths; despite Ren and Dymi having Chibi and each other.
Then there's the whole thing where there's a few times where Usa's expected to act like a mother to a five/eight(?) year old looking kid as a fourteen/fifteen year old teenager but then when she attempts to do just that she's told to back off because 'she's not her mother yet'. Given all the responsibility but never any of the authority. Hell, sometimes she's even been undermined and thwarted in her attempts to get the kid who has life-altering or danger-incurring secrets to spill them, if only to make back-up plans. Like, the kid appears from the sky while on a date with her guy, threatens her with a gun (being a toy is irrelevant in this case since if that had actually been real she'd have been dead when the Brat pulled the trigger) for a Crystal she shouldn't have known she had, and promptly appears in the midst of her brainwashed family with no idea how she found her way there and props to a false backstory. If she had been in any way type of hostile, that could very well be considered a hostage situation and then what would have happened? What could she have done?
Especially with the already mentioned attempts by the Spore to make her out as being more incompetent than she already felt she was in her civilian life before Chibi Found Out and her friends seeming so okay with the kid possibly putting her family in danger, the BMC only needed to see her with them by a stroke of luck to have practically gift wrapped hostages for the taking if not the kid herself, and her guy breaking up with her with a weak explanation to why and no attempts to get him to actually explain himself or tell him to take a hike since he supposedly doesn't care about her anymore and stepping up to take on the role themselves as her actual bodyguards; especially since he's not really a team player. Usually just a distraction or last minute rescue for SM instead of actually working with them or even attempting to see if he can do more by practicing/sparring with them. Hell, they could even try some bonding activities that don't involve all five/six/seven of them or study sessions.
As for SuperS, I found it so annoying not just because of the refocus on the ungrateful Pink Spore but also because of the 'plot point'(?!) of Pegasus being treated just like TK from the first season. Like, why?! Usa, at least, should've given the benefit of the doubt to Chibi because she went through the same thing in regards to TK. Instead she did the same thing as the others and Luna did to her. Not to mention that if Chibi had said something, actually shown that despite her still present 'ttude she does trust them because such a secret as that could've been deadly for all anyone knew, the girls and Mamo could've made some plans or something of the like to keep her and Pegasus safe while still letting her fight and train as a Senshi. Because they could've also used it as training for themselves. To bodyguard while also protecting themselves and civilians, or learning how to prioritize and delegate while working together in battle because not all of them might be present at the time. Or, like the True Ending to the fourth season, (not the "series ending" one that was for the North American audience) not paired with their preferred partner/comrades. Hell, mentioning that, the Outers could've been brought in to help instead of the two of them fucking off, the third... returning to the Gate(?) {did we ever learn how Pluto was brought back after her Time Stop Sacrifice in the 90s anime, or was it like that one was considered from the SilMil and the one after was the Reincarnation as provided by Queen Selenity as a delayed effect kinda thing?} and the last being practically abandoned with her still healing father while still an innocent infant. It wouldn't be weird for Hotaru, if she had been aged to match like in the Manga, to hang with Chibi as her best friend and thus the first line of defense/warning to the others as and when needed.
Just... there's so much that could've been done differently but wasn't because of this, that, and the other thing. What do you think?

Ok, I shall start my liveblog rewatch of Sailor Moon Crystal with Act 15: Infiltration - Sailor Mars.
May I just begin by saying it is a BALLSY move of Chibiusa to introduce herself to her past parents by literally falling on them and then pointing a gun in Usagi's face.

CHIBIUSA ISNT IN LOVE WITH HER DAD HER WHOLE ARC ESPECIALLY IN THE BLACK MOON ARC IS AGAINST THAT OH MY GOD
Black lady is Chibiusa manipulated into being this person she isn’t, it’s a form born from her trauma and insecurities with being small and not taken seriously alongside the loneliness she feels (which is why she kidnaps Mamoru and does that whole fucked up crap and kisses him, she doesn’t WANT to do that obviously but Wiseman is using her trauma to MAKE her do that!!) the scene is supposed to uncomfortable and bad because we as the audience KNOW this isn’t right and that she doesn’t want this THAT WHOLE ARC IS TELLING YOU THIS FORM IS BAD so that the comparison of her finally finding some peace and love in herself brings out her sailor form!!! FUCKING READ!!!
Tumblr media
This form is based on trauma and is something Chibiusa does NOT want!!!!
Tumblr media
THIS FORM IS OUT OF SELF LOVE AND IS THE ANTHESIS OF BLACK LADY!!!
This is especially why I hate when ppl use her kissing mamoru as black lady as a point to the whole “haha shes in love with her dad! Haha Electra complex!” Which like NO!!!! SHE DIDNT WANNA DO THAT!!! THE SCENE IS SUPPOSED TO BE DISTURBING AND FUCKED UP BECAUSE YOU KNOW NEITHER OF THEM WANT THIS!!!!!
Chibiusa’s relationship with Mamoru is really complicated because yes she does have those sorts of feelings for him but it’s not actually love, it’s because she is lonely and the only happiness she remembers having is with Endymion. She doesn’t really understand that Endymion and Mamoru are the same person there’s that disconnect. Shes not in love with him, she’s confusing that familiar happiness with love, this is why her meeting helios helps breaks this a bit, because with him she realizes that this form of love is different so she finally connects things BECAUSE IS A CHILD AND STILL LEARNING WHAT LOVE EVEN IS!!!
(Hotaru also helps with this too ofc)
BUT NO SHES NOT IN LOVE WITH HER DAD HER WHOLE CHARACTER IS AGAINST THAT!!!!!!
Chibiusa’s arc and emotional story goes so hard when you don’t have a bitch in your ear telling you “OH BUT SHES IN LOVE WITH HER DAD” WHEN THATS NOT EVEN TRUE!!!
