Been really into Planet Zoo recently, habitats from top to bottom: Giant Panda, Chinese Pangolin, Red Panda
#main scenery pieces in red panda habitat made by Sir_Didymus on steam workshop#Not pictured here: the second bit of the red panda habitat which has himalaya pines#normally I'm doing a ton of research to see what their habitats actually look like and imitating it as much as possible but#in this zoo I decided I'm just going to roll with it because that takes a while#Planet Zoo

So we know that Leo canonically put the Grimoire in the West Andes, but he doesn’t really specify what exactly he did with it.
“Well, the Grimoire has a new home in a mountain of rock in the West Andes.”
Which is vague enough for you to make your own arguments about what he did with it, although mountain of rock is more specific than I remembered it being. (I will still be sharing this thought anyways.) So two basic ideas:
First off: some kind of magical stronghold dedicated to keeping it out of Evil’s hands once again. Without it, they’re unable to crown a new Source, which creates a pretty significant complication in the legitimation of any new leadership in the Underworld. I mean, you could make any kind of argument about what the defenses are, ranging from spelled to hell and back or a group of actual beings dedicated to protecting it. Elders, witches, whatever. Any evil being would first have to find the “stronghold” and then have to destroy the spells or defeat the protectors. (Which would give a Big Bad some nice credentials on being an actual formidable threat.) Alternatively, and the one that inspired the post:
Leo ditched it in the snow.
Like. Demons go to the West Andes, dragging Leo with them and they’re expecting the first option or something and they go 👿 where is it and Leo just *shrugs* i don’t know, i think i buried it over there? and they’re like. what...do you mean? and leo just says i don’t know, i just left it under the snow. seemed like a good safety precaution which everyone wants to argue with but they are standing on a snowy mountain with no idea where the fuck the evil magical book is so point leo i guess. (Demon leader trying to recover from the fuck-up and demanding their minions start to dig and Leo just helpfully squints at a different spot and goes it could’ve been there too. and the demon leader grits their teeth and demands which is it and leo shrugs again and is like not sure, it all looks the same. demon leader throws their hands up and goes what do you mean it all looks the same and leo shrugs again. this was over twenty years ago, i forgot which identical snow pile it’s under.)
Necessary disclaimer/context: the West Andes don’t even look snowy, according to Google. I just always think that Leo hid the Grimoire in the Himalayas for some reason, and so my brain automatically goes “snowy mountain!” despite any logic about it. I still think it’s a funny idea though.
#charmed#charmed meta#worldbuilding#leo wyatt#i mean barely tbh#meta#this is mostly an excuse for#crack#imma eventually write a ficlet about that i think#also srsly why do i always think that leo hid it in the himalayas instead of the andes

I want to also mention that most places have a prevailing wind, and the desert will be on the side of the mountains that the wind is blowing towards from the ocean. The most important large-scale factor affecting prevailing winds is latitude, and in general, they'll come from the east between 30° north and 30° south, and from the west between 30° and 60° latitudes in both the northern and southern hemispheres. The winds come from the east again in polar regions, but they're not as strong, and don't cover as much ground.
You can look at satellite and climate maps of South America and see the desert switching which side of the Andes it's on at around 30° south, and I believe this is why, though I'm not certain.
reminder to worldbuilders: don't get caught up in things that aren't important to the story you're writing, like plot and characters! instead, try to focus on what readers actually care about: detailed plate tectonics
#Worldbuilding#I learned about prevailing winds way after I learned about rain shadows but I think it's more helpful to learn them together#That map tool doesn't have much detail but it's fun as a rain shadow generator#What I said doesn't explain why eastern Africa and the Arabian Peninsula are like that though#I think it's something to do with the Himalayas disrupting the prevailing winds to the east but really don't quote me on that one

I FUCKING L
OVE GEOLOGY
#DIDNT MEAN FOR THE IMAGE TO BE INBEWTEEN THE WORDS BUT ITS FUNNY SO IM KEEPING IT#i forget sometimes and then i end up researching a bunch of geology shit for no reason and fuck YEAH BABYE I FUCKING LOVE GEOLOGY#brought to you by. i am literally worldbuilding intricate geology of a region for. no reason#this started as: what do faun weddings look like?#>whats the decoration for them look like >where do they get the stone for that >what kinds of stone is in an area like this#> what could make it unique > how are these rocks formed > what kinds of SEDIMENTATION could be in an area like this#> what circumstances must be true for me to get the kinds of sedimentation i want? > how can i make that happen in terms of geologic time?#i fucking love geology. speculative geology is frankly. not used enough. speculative biology has a long history#but i havent seen much GEOLOGY#MY TURN#anyway. researching himalayas geology>researching rock types>researching sedimentation methods>researching clay types> and now we back at.#plate tectonics. oh baby its always plate tectonics#<said with joy and elation

I just wanted to piggyback on @gay-jesus-probably’s excellent commentary with the small addition that Sagarmāthā (meaning “goddess of the sky” or “head in the sky”) is the Nepali term, first introduced by the Nepali government in the 1960s, while in the Tibetan & Sherpa languages, the mountain is called Chomolungma (meaning “Holy Mother”).
Let’s be honest - Everest should be cut off from climbers, and the only people that should be allowed up there are ppl who volunteer to clean up all the garbage and human excrement adrenaline junkies have left up there over the decades, and anyone who volunteers to attempt to bring down any bodies of those who died.
The ascent is too dangerous, too many ill-equipped and unprepared climbers try to make the climb, and too much garbage is piling up and poisoning the run off that communities around Everest rely on to live.
#chomolungma#sagarmāthā#everest#mountains#world#important#nepal#tibet#himalayas#i have never climbed the mountain nor do i intend to but i have been fortunate enough to visit this incredible region through voluntary work#and spend time with some really wonderful sherpa people who taught me so much about this place#my guide on this trip had summited the mountain multiple times and said that climbing was in his blood#he talked about the mountains with such admiration and respect for them#the mistake people make is seeing the mountain as something they can conquer#and not listening when it tells you to turn back#sometimes admitting defeat and coming back another time is the way to survive#but some climbers were too arrogant#he always called it chomolungma#tag ramble
