actually yknow what, no. this is not being limited to discord, yall get it too.
some general cooking tips (in which there is a brief senshi posession):
moisture is the enemy of crispy skin. pat dry with paper towel, and if you have the time and spoons, give a thorough but even coat of baking powder and let sit uncovered in your fridge overnight. this will dry out the skin nicely. for pork belly, create a tight foil boat so that only the skin is showing, and cover in salt to draw out moisture, repeating a couple times if necessary.
furikake seasoning, for the fellow rice lovers, is just nori (seaweed), sesame seeds, sugar, and msg/salt. you might have most if not all of these things already in your kitchen.
chai spice mix is just cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, cloves, nutmeg, & allspice.
pumpkin spice is just cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and ginger.
to cure your own bacon, you only need water, white and brown sugar, and a non-iodized salt - himalayan pink salt is not iodized, if you cannot find butchers curing pink salt. from there, you can add any seasoning/flavoring you want.
the truly adventurous may cook their rice in green tea for a fresh clean taste.
you can tell if a fish is truly fresh by their eyes - clear and bright is fresh, while cloudy is older or potentially has been frozen.
it's cheaper to buy a large block pack of ramen from your local asian market and repackage the bricks into sandwich bags, than to buy a box of individually packaged ones such as maruchan or top ramen.
when buying meat, look at it's fat content - more fat marbling usually means more tender + flavorful.
you can save onion skins and other vegetable scraps to make your own broth with. you can also save bones for this. mix and match ratios to create your ideal flavor.
bay leaf will always make a soup or broth taste better, but Watch Out (they are not fun to bite into on accident).
msg is, in fact, not The Devil, that was just a racist hate campaign against the chinese and other oriental races. it's literally just a type of salt. it is no more dangerous to eat than any other type of salt.
washing your rice is important because it not only improves flavor and texture by removing excess starch, but it also helps reduce any residual pesticides or dirt, or even insect fragments (please remember that rice paddies are essentially giant ponds that all kind of things live in and swim around. you should also be washing all your produce in general.)
please salt your cooking water for pastas, it just tastes better and you will be happier for it.
boiled potatoes are also improved by salt water.
if you hate vegetables, please consider trying them fried in butter or perhaps bacon grease. it is healthier to eat them fatty than not at all.
healthy food does not in fact have to taste miserable. thats a lie. they are lying to you. free yourself from your blandness shackles. enter a world of flavor.

Pink Himalayan salt is often marketed as a premium product. While it contains trace minerals like calcium, iron, magnesium, and potassium, the amounts are so minimal that they have no significant impact on nutritional intake.

So my roommate and I were reading The Spy Who Came In From The Cold series by @philosopherking1887 , and we couldn’t stop craving Delavian chocolates from how great they described them so I decided to make them and here’s my little recipe. (I mostly measured by my heart so the measurements probably won’t be exact)
What you’ll need:
85% cacao dark chocolate bar (I used central market, the more you’re able to use of this the better your chocolates will taste I mixed with the chocolate melts just so that I’d have enough for 2.5 squares of each flavor)
Ghirardelli dark chocolate melts
Coarse Himalayan pink salt
Rosemary (I used dried)
Powdered sage
Lavender
Lingonberry jam
Cayenne
Chopped up almonds (or almond extract)
I also used some rosemary and pepper flavored honey along with mesquite flavored honey but this is really optional
Any silicone mold you have I just used an ice tray we weren’t using
Make a little double broiler with a pan with boiling water and a glass bowl on top to melt the chocolate and remember to temper your chocolate before putting them in your mold.
For the delavian berry chocolate:
I used 4 squares of the 85% cacao dark chocolate bar and a handful of dark chocolate melts put them in the double broiler with roughly 2 teaspoons of lingonberry jam, mixed it around until completely incorporated, if you want more of a lavender taste with it put a pinch in with the chocolate as it’s melting otherwise I just put it on top of some of the chocolate for it to be more subtle. Make sure you temper your chocolate before placing them in the mold by adding 1/3 of the amount of chocolate you first put in after you’ve taken the bowl off of the heat I didn’t learn to do this until my 2nd batch and the chocolate will lose all of it’s integrity when out of the fridge/freezer too long. Then I put the chocolate in the freezer to let it solidify.
The ijhem nut delavian chocolate:
Nuts are a migraine trigger for me but my roommate loves almonds so I just used what we had on hand so I cannot speak for how these chocolates taste
Using the same chocolate ratio and set up as the berry chocolate add either some chopped up almonds or what I did which is a splash of almond extract we had with some vanilla extract, again make sure to temper your chocolate and place them into the mold. (Or just buy some almond chocolate from the store)
This one is the whole reason why I had to make these chocolates my roommate and I couldn’t stop talking about the blue salt and fruit chocolates, I made this one with and without lingonberry and I have to say both were good but I loved it without.
Use 4 squares of your 85% chocolate bar and a handful of dark chocolate melts just like in the last couple, add a pinch of sea salt and cayenne pepper (I also added a dollop of rosemary pepper honey and mesquite flavored honey) mix until fully melted, temper your chocolate and then add to your mold, I then mixed in small pinches of the coarse Himalayan salt so each chocolate had an even amount and then after it’s set for a minute or two top with another pinch of the Himalayan salt. If you want to make it fruit filled prior to mixing in any of the coarse salt, line your mold with some of the chocolate put some of the lingonberry jam (or really any jam you have) then top it off with the rest of the chocolate.
The Lerta herb chocolate (my personal favorite)
Using the same chocolate ratio add a good solid sprinkling of sage powder (if I had to guess maybe anywhere from 1-2 teaspoons start off small and taste as you melt until you get a desired amount) and a little less rosemary (anywhere from 1/3-1/2 of the amount you use of sage again start off small until you reach a desired taste but keep in mind it will be a tiny bit more flavorful after setting) a hint of cayenne powder, and I once again added a dollop of rosemary and pepper flavored honey. Mix that bad boy up and temper it put it in your mold and if you’re feeling fancy top it with some rosemary (or even maybe some of the Himalayan salt and lavender. I personally enjoyed doing that)
And boom you now have my best interpretation of their Delvain Chocolates. My roommates and I personally enjoyed them and I hope you do as well! Im also pretty sure you could find real chocolates with these flavors but I already had 90% of the ingredients I needed and I like trying to make new things. This was my first time making a recipe and making chocolates and I had a great time. I didn’t manage to get any pictures of my first batch but I attached a photo of some of my 2nd batch which aren’t as pretty as my first and is mostly just the herb and berry chocolates.

I love it when cooking shows are like, "So the way we make this is first we go catch some of the fresh largemouth bass from the lake on our property. We only needed a few years to farm the population and it's worth the extra prep time. After that, we're going to grab some dill from the hydroponic garden, and a lemon out of the climate controlled green house. I prefer to use my own peppercorns, and of course we're going to shave a little of our Himalayan salt slab. Now if you want to simplify the recipie a little, you can get some fresh fish at the local fish market on Thursday morning, and just grow your own dill in a window box. For the pepper corns and lemons, check out our other videos in the links in the description for a DIY guide to these which you can do in the spare fourth guest room. Next we need a creamy sauce so we're going to talk about making our own mayonnaise. Check out the other links for setting up a coop and chickens to have fresh eggs."

the next time a recipe tells me that I need "Himalayan Sea Salt" for a recipe I'm going to print out the recipe, fold it into a miniscule paper brick, bury the brick in a little cardboard box full of Morton's table salt, fill a bigger box with a crushed salt lick, rig it with a motion sensitive glitter bomb setup, and mail the whole thing to whoever first decided imported salt was sexy.
The Himalayan Mountains are landlocked. Himalayan Rock Salt is pink because it's full of oxidized iron deposits from the rock it's mined out of. There's no measurable nutritional benefit to eating Pink Salt. In fact it's technically less nutritionally useful than table salt because it's not iodized. Those salt lamps that were so popular a while ago, marketed as air purifiers? Same stuff. They didn't purify air or neutralize negative ions or protect against EMF toxins or whatever. Fleur de Sel had the same problem in the late 90s, and Dead Sea Salt had its turn in the early aughts.
Himalayan Sea Salt. What kind of vacuous pinterest nonsense.

@dcviated asked:
I was gonna send an IC ask but I keep imagining Honey as the protagonist of one of those 'run a store to get out of debt' games. How do you think she would prioritize (or, did, I guess) upgrading and expanding the business? Did she have any band-aids (so to speak) while waiting for other things to come together?
I'm playing in this mental playplace with you and I gotta say, I would KILL to play this game; she feels like a very natural fit for that protagonist role, especially considering her narrative typically shifts directly from 'finishing up magic school' (or something to the same effect) and moving straight into starting her business. Typically, I'm charitable enough to assume she doesn't have student debt or other similar some-such to worry about, but it would be a cute narrative to explore... mmm.... well, let's get into the meat of the question:
If Honey had started from a less-than-advantageous position and didn't have the savings/means to go from zero to her idealized vision of Charmed Confections from the start, the first thing she'd set her mind to figuring out is consistent, high-quality supply sources she could form good business relationships with.
Playing the market and probing all of the options in that respect is something which takes a surprising amount of time; as much as possible, she'd probably try to sort stuff like this out before she opens her doors, but with payments due and pressure mounting, things can only be delayed so long. Until a better wholesale arrangement can be made, she's probably just making supply trips herself and buying in smaller quantity—more micro-manage-y than she'd care to be, but it's not the end of the world in the short term given that she's not exactly cranking out the volume of goods she aspires to, from the start.
That's probably one of the hardest things for her to curb, at first, despite knowing the necessity of it: given as she is to flights of fancy, Honey wants to make good on every blessed thought which crosses her mind, every experimental treat and obscure, foreign pastry or candy; but filling a shoppe with a visual assault of outlandish options is a sure way to run into the red fast.
So she starts with staples, the more familiar things, albeit with a bit of a twist or general personal touch: pain au chocolat, but also some with a honey-pistachio filling, soft caramels with pink himalayan salt or maybe a hint of cayenne, etc. etc. The pre-made options start simple, select, with a more pronounced emphasis on by-request/custom orders as she's getting her footing. This means not keeping more expensive or niche ingredients on hand and letting anything go to waste, purchasing specialty materials (and perhaps equipment) only when a custom order invites it and ensures the cost will be covered, in kind.
To that end, she also dedicates a lot of her initial focus to good ol'-fashioned marketing. Doesn't have the spare bones to commission much, so it's all self-designed, printed, and distributed, but that's hardly a detriment in her case—she's probably not even fully settled in to her new neighborhood before she starts showing up at food fairs, wedding expos, craft markets and other some-such with a table, a booth, some fine samples of her sweets and a portfolio of the fancier sugar-sculptures, cakes, and other specialty orders she's made (or mocked up) in the past. Always! Stay! Plugging!
For someone whose philosophy centers around a life of luxury, hedonism, and well-cultivated laziness: she works herself like a dog in that opening season. The 'band-aids' employed to keep her growth, aesthetic, and vision on track while she was still working to make connections and establish her customer base, waiting for commerce to really start flowing—quite simply: it was to do everything she possibly could, herself.
All the signage and decorations? Made by hand. The same delicately manicured hands which begrudgingly committed themselves to building some of her own custom display stands, custom bits of furniture. Many a tear to be shed, many a furrowed brow while trying to spacial-reason her way through the process, but precision measuring is one of her strongpoints, and while she won't soon be trading her preferred fabrication tools of spatulas and candy maker's shears for power tools full-time, she makes do, and does better than expected.
Presentation and environment are important. You can have some of the most delicious goodies in the world in stock, but it won't matter if nobody notices your existence in the first place—people have to want to come in through your door and spend time inside. In that respect, I think one of the first 'upgrades'/'expansions' she'd prioritize is making room for a small seating area, a bar, stationed within view of the front windows; so people not only have a place to sit and immediately enjoy their treat, (basking in the scents and ogling more potential prizes to take home), but also so they can be seen by passers-by. There's no promotion more powerful than seeing someone else enjoying themselves (aka, y'know, FOMO).
From the very beginning I think she also tries to situate herself either in a stand-alone building with lot space to expand into, or (depending on setting) a sort of strip-mall/street with an additional empty storefront beside it, hoping to work her way up to enough profit in time to buy out that additional space as well.
#answered.#isms.#about.#musings.#dcviated#( ...this makes me want to play recettear )#( i should also look into potionomics tbh )#( but yes. someone please make me a game for my sweetmaker/charm seller. it'd be a banger i promise. )#( queue. )

bottled lemon juice is definitely cheaper here than buying fresh lemons. lemons are 50 cents to a dollar a piece and a bottle that's got the equivalent of a few dozen lemons is only about 5 bucks.
actual pre-grated cheese is much more expensive but the kraft stuff is artificial and full of additives. i like the taste but its not cheese per se.
jarred garlic is cheaper but you have to use proportionally more of it for the same effect. if you dont like that sharp garlic taste its probably better to use the jarred stuff. but its definitely different
i dont understand what the problem is supposed to be with iodized salt. most cooks i know prefer kosher because its easier to work with but theyre the same price per weight. if theyre trying to say you should use sea salt or himalayan pink salt those dont actually taste different its just marketing

I love Josh’s anti-classism so much. I grew up in a single parent household that didn’t have time/the ability to cook. I taught myself as an adult and ended up loving it. I cook with this stuff a lot. Shit, the RealLemon juice ends up in a lot of my cocktails. Sure, I like fancy ingredients when I can afford them and I have things I get picky about using - but I have bad hands, mincing garlic is painful as fuck. There’s a lot to be said for knowing how to work with what you have. Don’t shame people for trying, don’t shame people for feeding their families things that they enjoy.
