Hilda Appreciation Week Day Seven: Free Day or Favorite AU(s)
For me, it's my (and hold it down) 'verse, of course!! This AU started with my wondering what Hilda would be like if she retained the ability to turn into a troll, then it spawned a fic, then a series, and now a whole 'verse I love to play around in. I'm still planning to work on it because I still love it so so much, but internship be wild and I'm so tired (and stressed) these days so that's probably not going to happen for a while :(
I decided to include my teen and adult designs for Hilda and Frida, with Hilda's troll forms included, as that's the time frame in which the majority of AU takes place (also ft. Arch-Sorceress Frida) and also included Frankie because he's also a part of the AU! Beloved child :)
reblogs are highly appreciated, and please do not repost my art

Something that really intrigued me about Hilda is that in the first season it started with Frankie cosmos song (Fool) and how the last season it ended with Frankie cosmos. It started and ended with Frankie cosmos :') (such a bitter sweat feeling)

Hear me out: any modern child!sketchbook AU should include Kaisa as a Monster High fan and Johanna as an Ever After High fan. They play together and make the Draculaura and Cerise Hood dolls kiss. That is all.

Been in a strong musical AND Hilda mood tonight so I thought it'd be fun to sing a lil personal cover of "Fool" by Frankie Cosmos from "The Midnight Giant" for y'all, though instead of recording a voice memo like I'd usually do, I thought I'd try something different just this once and show myself playing my uke as I sing this time. Hope ya enjoy! (and it's okay if not) <33

as i gaze upon your blog i wonder, “what the hell is taskmaster?” i’d journey the lands of safari but its much better to hear the words of insight from the enjoyer. quite interested in the au tho, tempted to watch this thingamabob because of it. i like hearing your ramblings about your fave doodabs and whatchamajigits. i am determined to return to you with the holy gift of a singular hilda but finals are kicking my ass and i’m learning a new art program. while i wait i’d love to be graced by your words :3
HI ANON!! first of all good luck with finals and your new art program i hope everything turns out BEAUTIFULLY for you don't forget to have fun!!
i'm so glad you asked! taskmaster is a ridiculously entertaining gameshow that originated here in the uk with other versions in other countries. it's super fun to make aus/character studies around the tasks because they're so telling of personality!
Tumblr media
the format of the show is - 5 comedians per season are set tasks by host greg davies (6'8" ex-schoolteacher, and it shows) and creator/cohost alex horne (the brains behind it, but onscreen is very weaselly/neeky and generally picked-on).
each episode begins with a prize task, in which contestants must bring in prizes to be won by the winner each day - the most high-octane item, the thing that makes the best noise, the most difficult thing to take home. prizes range from body parts to furnished bathroom sets. these, along with every other task, are scored in the studio from 1-5 points. the rest of the tasks are filmed beforehand mostly in one house, individually and sometimes in teams, and are incredibly arbitrary, silly, confusing or difficult:
eat as much watermelon in 60 seconds. eat an egg the fastest (it starts raw). interview, then write and perform a song about this stranger. conceal an entire pineapple on your person. take three huge exercise balls to the top of this large hill. make the biggest mess, then clean it up. get this object as far away from here as possible. go the longest time without blinking.
sarah kendall purposefully, blindfoldedly, throws her own house and car keys into the trees in front of the building. james acaster gets taken aside onstage to be told off by greg like a schoolboy. respected academic richard osman throws a shopping trolley into a river in a fit of rage (it is retrieved). nish kumar and mark watson write a genuinely beautiful song together. bob mortimer makes a floor-size chart documenting the amount of piss produced across britain.
Tumblr media
the episodes end with a live task in the studio in front of the audience. the show allows the contestants to genuinely go off the rails with comedic creativity and problem solving, and it's SO fun to impose characters onto this template. person gets presented with task -> completes task as they see fit -> is judged on their actions -> reacts to the judgement. like if you want to develop an oc. look no further!! put them on taskmaster in your brain.
every contestant, whether it be famous comedians, up-and-coming stand-ups, or actors & presenters, really shine in taskmaster. people who i don't really find funny become entertaining and i root for them simply because of the genius format of the show.
it gets gross, argumentative, tense, earnest, and never ever loses the clownish spirit and light-heartedness of the meaningless and hilarious program it sets out to be. greg davies is ruthlessly harsh with points, alex horne is endlessly nitpicky and often bullied, and they frequently bring up fanfiction written about the two of them for some fucking reason. they embody such perfectly fine-tuned characters, only to break them constantly to laugh at the show.
if anyone (no one) wants to know a few of my fav contestants rn they are:
sam campbell, lucy beaumont, sarah kendall, bob mortimer, nish kumar, james acaster, and the ENTIRE freakish family team dynamic of frankie boyle, ivo graham, jenny eclaire, kiell smith-bynoe, and mae martin

thank you anon :-) i'm sorry this was so long i hope you didnt mind reading it all and it told u what u wanted to know!!

REVENGE for @autumnalfallingleaves over on art fight ! I think that AJ would think Madison is just SO cool. She has a dragon, she skateboards, she plays the drums, she's a witch AND she pisses off the local police force??? Sign her up. Annoying little sister who won't leave you and your best friend alone when you're hanging out. The definition of "Mum said I could come too!" except she's trying so hard to be chill and cool about it.

Hey, stranger
(a ficlet about Hilda and Hilbert because I needed more Black (and Black x White) in the BW2 arc of the Pokespe manga.)
The light above the door buzzed quietly, it's yellow glow illuminating the lacquered brown doorway. Hidden amongst high concrete walls, the ornate entrance seemed misplaced.
For the most part, Castelia city, despite being the largest city in Unova, was rather clean. Though, Narrow Street was adorned with filled rubbish skips and overturned trash cans. People stood by flickering streetlamps, their eyes darting about. Strolling past them, one man approached the unassuming doorway.
Cafe Sonata was a little-known place. It's customers were few, but loyal. The budding musicians which played live music mingled, discussing their craft and spurring one another on. Several customers filled the boothes. Brown leather couches around sleek black tabletops. Yellow wallpaper decorated with swirling brown patterns covered the walls. Lamps sat on the walls at regular intervals. Black stools lined a glass-topped bar. A black suited barkeep selected drinks from rows of shelves, overflowing with bottles of various shapes and sizes.
Shuffling to the bar, a man dressed in denim jeans and a heavy black coat slid into a stool. He pulled a grey scarf from his neck and draped it over a knee, but left the black and blue beanie sitting atop his head. The barkeep served a round of drinks before strolling over, a broad grin splitting his face.
"Hilbert? It's been too long. How are you?" The barkeep said, pouring a thick brown liquid into an ornate glass.
Grinning softly, Hilbert nodded, his gaze distant. "Good, Franky, I'm good. Yourself?"
Franky drummed his fingers on the bar and shook his head slowly. "Well, Melissa had her baby."
Hilbert's face seemed to crinkle as he smiled. "You're an Uncle? Well, congratulations!"
Still shaking his head, Franky chuckled. "Thank you, thank you. Tell you what, that ankle biter's got a set of pipes. Who knows, maybe I'll have the kid playing here some day."
Swirling the drink in his glass, Hilbert nodded. "When the day comes, let me know. I'll be here."
"It's a deal," Franky agreed.
Turning, the barkeep grabbed a dirty glass and began wiping it with the nearest dishrag. The two lapsed into a comfortable silence for some time, until Franky cleared his throat.
"So, speaking of kids, you seeing anyone yet?"
Hilbert sighed, his head dipping. "Nah, I'm just, I don't know. It's been awhile since I was interested in anyone."
"Why not her?" Using his head, Franky gestured at a girl sitting alone in a booth. She seemed lost in thought, staring into the drink cradled in her hands.
Hilbert glanced at the stranger before raising an eyebrow.
The barkeep answered with a shrug. "She's been coming here for years, but she doesn't stop by too often."
Shaking his head, Hilbert sipped at his drink. "Then clearly she likes this place. I'll leave her be and she can continue to enjoy it."
"Actually, I'd be grateful for the company," a voice responded.
Glancing over his shoulder, Hilbert raised an eyebrow at the girl. Smiling politely, she slid into the stool beside him.
"I didn't mean to eavesdrop, but when people talk about me, I tend to notice."
Pulling his lips into a thin smile, Hilbert nodded slowly. "My apologies. I'm Hilbert."
"Hilda," the girl answered, extending her hand.
Hilbert shook her hand gently and noticed that Franky had subtly moved away from the pair.
"So," Hilda began, "do you come here often?"
"No, but I like to stop by when I'm in the area. Franky's an old friend. Yourself?"
A wistful smile playing on her lips, Hilda shook her head. "Unfortunately not. I travel a lot, but I absolutely love this Cafe so I stop by whenever I'm in Castelia."
"You aren't from around here, then?" Hilbert asked, gesturing with his glass.
"No, I'm from Nuvema Town. What about you?"
"Lacunosa Town," Hilbert answered with a polite nod.
As the conversation lulled, Hilda turned sideways to better look at Hilbert. Crossing her legs, she held her chin in a hand, resting her elbow on the counter top. Her fingers drummed lightly against her cheek.
Hilbert glanced curiously at her but didn't say anything.
A minute or two passed with neither saying anything, but eventually a sly grin crept across Hilda's features.
"I see," she murmured.
The statement hung in the air, jabbing at Hilbert. His eyebrows raised in a question, but Hilda said nothing.
Spinning slowly in his chair, he turned to face her better. She wore a white blouse, tucked into a black pencil skirt with matching tights. A black blazer clung tightly to her small frame. Her long brown hair was pulled into a high ponytail, though two stray curls hung down, framing her soft facial features.
"See what?" Hilbert asked slowly.
Her smile growing, Hilda promptly ignored the question. "Knock, knock."
Hilbert scoffed, but replied nonetheless. "Who's there?"
Hilda opened her mouth to answer but after a moment only laughed. "I'm sorry, I've got nothing. I can't think of anything."
A grin crept across Hilbert's face. He nodded and gazed into his now empty glass while a warm, fuzzy feeling began spreading through his chest.
"Do you have a dream?" The words slipped from his mouth before Hilbert could stop himself. Glancing at Hilda, he shook his head apologetically. "Sorry, I didn't mean- I study psychology, both human and Pokemon. It's just interesting, hearing what drives people."
Hilda's open mouth closed slowly, a loving smile adorning her face. "When I was little, I saw a musical. It was incredible. The music, backdrops, acting, every part was so well crafted, but during one of the songs, a Cubchoo appeared onstage. I don't know where it came from, but I don't think it belonged to one of the cast or crew."
Her gaze growing distant, Hilda drew little circles on the bartop. A quiet laugh escaped her lips and she shook her head slowly. "The musical didn't stop. They just kept going. That Pokemon, that little Cubchoo, it looked like it was having so much fun. That was when I fell in love with theatre." Her eyes raised to meet Hilbert's gaze and a determined tint settled on her features."
"I will create opportunities for everyone to enjoy theatre, without fear or worry."
Gently placing his glass on the bartop, Hilbert smiled, a glint in his eyes. "That's a nice dream."
"It is," Hilda agreed, "but I wonder, have I already fulfilled it? The musical theatre in Nimbasa City, and Pokestar Studios in Virbank, I managed those projects. Now, they're crazy successful and employees handle everything. Have I achieved my dream? Do I keep developing the theatre and studio or create new opportunities? Or maybe, is it time to move on, start a new dream? What do I do now?"
Nodding knowingly, Hilbert ran a hand down his thigh. "I've met a few people wondering the same thing, but none of them had an answer yet. Though they were all happy; grateful that they'd had the chance to arrive at that point because doesn't it mean they achieved something? Whether that chapter of their lives' ends or whether they keep going, the fact that they stopped and asked is something special. Not everyone gets that chance."
Hilda made a quiet noise in the back of her throat. Drumming her fingers on the tabletop, she smiled to herself. "Whatever happens next, I'm grateful."
Outside the Cafe, the city noise began to die. Car engines quietened and people disappeared from the streets. Stars streaked across the sky and the moon drifted closer to its rest, covering Castelia with a yellow glow.
The music stopped and patrons drifted from the Cafe. Hilbert and Hilda took no notice. Despite his yearning for sleep, Franky hadn't the heart to kick them out. So, he waited, cleaning glasses and occasionally refilling their drinks until the early hours of the morning when the sun rose anew.
