once again thinking about how satoshi's three categories of "thing that is bad" are, in order of priority, a) harms pokemon b) harms a person c) worries people satoshi cares about. thinking about how he excludes himself from the pool of people in category b. will try to stop doing a thing because it upsets a friend not because it causes himself any harm, but will most be concerned that it doesn't hurt someone else & most-most concerned that it doesn't hurt a pokemon. why is he like this.

Have you done any watches of the pokemon arcs and talked about them? Someone I'm mutuals with discussed doing that for AG arc. I'm considering doing it for the DP arc since I still consider it my favorite arc in the franchise.

Aww, sorry, I was a child getting into fandom when AG was starting in Japan, social media was at its infancy too... i didn't even have a livejournal yet. I don't do full series rewatches either. But I am very fond of the Contest arc, Haruka/May and Masato/Max, the humour, and the warm and tropical colour palettes. I also adored the hoso specials (the Side Stories that got dubbed as Pokemon Chronicles, although the dubs for those were... infamously much worse than the TV series in script quality and accuracy), I used to downloa the specials and watch them in Japanese while slowly learning Japanese bit by bit because no subbing group took Pokemon seriously enough to sub it outside of banned episodes, specials, and movies...

It was a unique time, I think!

Rescue Ralts! Hurry, Masato!/Do I Hear a Ralts? remains one of the best episodes of the anime, period. The Wishing star of Seven Nights: Jirachi was my old favourite pokemon movie before Lucario!! I love that the dub kept KAORI's singing for May and part of Chiisaki Mono in Japanese.

AG is criminally underrated, despite introducing concepts popular in fandom, like Hadou/Aura. Satoshi apologizing to Lucario after seeing his memory of apparently being abandoned by Aaron was the turning point for me where I truly felt Satoshi mature as a person and become much kinder and more patient. He was so prone to fighting people, he was much more of a (pint-sized) hotblooded shounen protagonist before that, but I adore the all-loving hero he grew into. How he helped Hikozaru/Chimchar heal in DP, how patiently he dealt with both Shinji/Paul and Shootie/Trip being jerks to varying degrees compared to the way he was before (solution: run screaming and throw himself at whatever problem exists, fists flying), the growth I personally cared about was visible even in the first episode of BW! where he's annoyed or exasperated by what he encounters, but keeps his temper in check and just makes faces in disapproval, fff.

He can still, of course, fight those who deserve it, like Largo's bullies and Sauboh/Faba.

So, yeah, I loved AG! It also has one of the only battles to ever excite me (anyone who knows me, knows I HATE Pokemon battles, they make my eyes glaze over... it's just not interesting to me unless a fight has, like, swords or something—I really do watch Pokemon more for the cute friendship stories, ships*, and idealized humans living in harmony with nature and other non-human creatures setting)... it was Haruka VS Shuu in the kanto Grand Festival! I was literally on the edge of my seat. I loved seeing her surpass him and his little look of approval and smile before she went from concern to happily celebrating with Wakashamo/Combusken. They had a beautiful story arc going from him looking down on her (while gifting roses like he's harboring a secret crush, fff), to respecting her as an equal, even dropping the -kun honorific he used to use after her name, when he saw her as a kouhai/underclassman and himself as her senpai/upperclassman, and moved to calling her just "Haruka"... after she saved his life, I believe!

I feel like that was Pokemon's best written romance amongst th main characters, it didn't overtake her story arc, it added to it and she still had her goals outside of that, it only added to her growth and story. ^^ It was innocent and sweet.

I am convinced that "for Agehunto/Beautifly" line is how Satoshi saw through Kasumi/Misty's lie in the final series.

I also adore the episode were Haruka and Nyasu/Meowth go back in time and save a man's life and improve a whole town (?) by doing so. It was a fun, moving episode.

The dub harmed this a bit with music choices and voice acting, but from the look of things, people still found it quite emotional (I still vastly prefer the original, no contest!), so Arbok and Weezing's release episode. Interesting that poacher Ryo/Rico was one of the last criminals shown using a real world gun and modern day weapon... maybe also because it doesn't look familiar to a lot of people as a real firearm...

*I got into Pokemon and Sailor Moon via a Rocketshipping fanfic set in the Silver Millenium when I knew nothing of both series and was used to only reading Harry Potter fanfic as an 11 year old! The secret backstory, pffft. So I watched for TR. ^^

I used to review Best Wishes! episodes, the earliest reviews were on my livejournal ( http://inkedfeathers.livejournal.com ), later mini reviews were on my now deleted tumblr blogs, but some reblogs exist... some DP episodes too! BW! was my favourite.

Diamond & Pearl was just a bit heavier in general like that! Between Shinji being the darkest rival Satoshi ever had, Hikozaru's trauma from Shinji's abuse & neglect and recovery (Hikozaru's Tears!/Tears for Fears! definitely paved the way for longer recovery arcs like Lillie's), and Hunter J being out to KILL Satoshi after his repeated interference (so on the same level as Bashou & Buson in a special pitched at slightly older fans, with higher stakes, a slightly older cast + love triangle subplot, etc., and even then, J's STILL more cut-throat, B&B are loyal to each other, J *does not care about her men*--they're canon fodder)..

Satoshi had a really, really rough time in Shinnou/Sinnoh, but he was also at his peak, whiiich is why people got so mad at his performance and attitude in Isshu/Unova (but he's also under far less stress overall.)

He probably doesn't get as mad at Shootie's nonsense as people'd *like* because he's just a rookie and younger than him (Shinji's a veteran trainer like Satoshi!) and coming right after Shinji, Shootie's stunts (outside of, uh, the very concerning stuff in Hiun/Castelia) are just *quaint.* Satoshi's probably like, "Aw, he's not *so* bad--maybe we can be friends!!!" If he managed to befriend SHINJI, how hard can it be? :D;

Ngl it took me a while to see what the ask was referring to, and i see now it’s a comment i made on the mood of DP back in 2017 xD since then i have watched a few more eps and well, my opinion is more or less the same. Generally can tell it’s a very good season, not “my” season, but that’s very okay! As an aside, I have complicated feelings regarding what makes a pitch for an older audience, but I am also aware that, having not watched DP in full, i am not in the best position to comment on what makes DP this or that.

All I can say is that DP is probably not for me overall (in the sense that I’d enjoy it but wouldnt go crazy over it), which is only a personal preference and does not speak to its quality, and that without comparing to DP, BW made a lot of sense to me in itself - whether it be regarding Satoshi’s reactions to Shootie or otherwise

he remembers the warnings. the grunts always seemed more hooligan than criminal to satoshi, though hardly less dangerous for the fact, but it was the boss that everyone always fussed about. some whispered as though invoking his name alone would make him show up & terrorize the neighborhood. he remembers how guzma used to be. comparing it to now, he's only more perplexed, but ... even at his roughest it was like that, huh. probably was the youngness. he kind of gets that ; even with no concept of one, a ten - year - old - satoshi latched onto takeshi as an older brother pretty quick. hm, maybe it is too different to work it out from just this. but he's still learning something about his two favorite skulls, so it's not a total wash.

& once again his heart aches for the grunt, the same part of it that cracked over hitokage, same part that shattered over hikozaru, same part that always stubbornly reaches out to the young & bruised balls of infinite potential someone else tossed aside. he's really so glad ree has the skulls. but that's the kind of mushy you don't tell to a kid actively cleaning your wounds, so satoshi pockets the thought for a later time.

he simply hums in understanding. considers how he should reply. if he should share back. what bits & pieces, then ... ?? not for a lack of trust, just ... because he's realizing he doesn't know how to explain parts of it without feeling like he's saying too much.

❛ i'm ... pretty sure the professor knew as much about me as i did about him when we met. that's to say — we thought we knew stuff that wasn't true at all. he thought i was barely in my teens & treated me accordingly, & i ... actually wasn't sure what to make of him. actually tried avoiding him at first. ❜ & isn't that a strange thought — how much distance he tried keeping at the start. a guilty distance, too, for the man hadn't done anything to garner the lack of trust other than be curious in a way satoshi had become wary of. he huffs a laugh, though.

❛ couple'a months into my first stay i heard my classmates calling us father - & - son. some of the teachers, too. then a bunch of people down at the market. that was weird. i think it was a proximity thing, mostly ?? 'cause, y'know, i did live with the guy. & turned out he was battle - crazy same as me. ahh, i couldn't really see it. i've only had my mama, & i didn't know much about other people's dads, so ... ❜ satoshi's never been bothered by the fact, & even now he throws it out like speaking on the weather, shrugging, but the lack of this sight everyone else around him had — that had made him curious. even if he was sure the comments were often mostly just teasing aimed at the professor.

❛ funnily enough, professor burnet being around made me kinda see it. she's always reminded me of my mama, so i guess the professors being together kinda made it click a little, that professor kukui felt like a parent. & i've definitely accidentally called professor burnet " mama " more than once, haha. ❜ only accidentally, though. & only that on accident. the other professor, however ...

satoshi looks aside, scratching idly at a spot on his cheek between scars, a bashful smile. ❛ i, uh ... i actually called professor kukui " dad " last father's day — bolted right out the door for the day, & he didn't bring it up later, so i've got no idea what he thought of that, but ... felt weird. not bad, at all, just ... weird, y'know ?? ❜ like moving an appendage that showed up spontaneously. so he's stuck on with the professor titles. for the time being.

“I mean, I dunno if all of Alola sees it. I dunno if even most of skull sees it. But I do.”

(Because Ree is the same as Satoshi in that regard. Finding a father-figure in someone who took them in.)

But trying to describe that is complicated at best. Ree’s not great with words. They’re not good with trying to display their feelings, either. So they turn Satoshi’s arm over and apply some antiseptic, mulling over his questions.

“I mean.” A pause. “It was different for me because I was so little. Most of the skulls were teenagers or even older; I was barely past ten.”

They’re not sure if Satoshi knew that. That they’ve been with skull for so long. Surely he did, right? Maybe? Ree swallows and keeps their eyes focused on fixing up Satoshi’s injuries.

“Since I was small, I needed more attention. I was treated differently; boss never yelled at me or scolded me like he did everyone else. He was … really angry back then. Way scary. I didn’t get it, but I learned that being scary was a way to protect yourself. It made sense. So…

I mean, I guess I always saw him as a dad. we’ve all called him dad once or twice on accident but I think it was different for me. I really did always see him as a dad. He’d protect me and make sure I was safe.

But …

i didn’t know if he would like that. I was scared of what kinda face he’d make …so I didn’t tell him. Not until after I got hurt. He got … more soft with me, after the accident.”

I’ve spent years hatching chimchars in many different games looking for a shiny, now going OVER ODDS with my Masada method+shiny charm approach in SV. My pokemon were bred for my personal competitive builds, hoping I’d finally have that hot pink monkey there to show off all that I’ve learned. Most of your siblings have amazing stats, why did yours come out only “good”?

Well, we are kinda midway between the two. As much as I am angry on what they did for my FAVOURITE POKEMON GAMES E V E R, I am really HYPED for Legends! This, mixed to a new colouring method I wanted to try... led to this!

taking in hikozaru was almost the breaking point of satoshi & takeshi’s friendship.     takeshi thought taking in a pokémon like that was how an unconventional trainer got themself killed by said pokémon & satoshi was still an arrogant brat with a contrastingly massive heart who’d already begun dissociating from his own mortality while never really caring about his own well-being above a pokémon’s before & refusing to start then.     it really was only satoshi proving that he could raise hikozaru into a goukazaru better than shinji ever could that made takeshi ease up, but by then he’d already decided he wanted to shift his focus towards being a pokémon doctor thus would need to part ways with satoshi.     they’re still practically brothers but the topic of abused pokémon rehabilitation is still more than a little sore when both are in present company. in any case, satoshi's purposefully omitted talking too much about the pre-catch times of a fair number of his pokémon when talking to takeshi in recent years. takeshi kind of understands everything without saying & lets them both pretend they don't have any issues.
