Prologue/Part One | Part Two | Part Three
The best way to survive in a world like this is in community.
The towns that thrive, as much as anyone can thrive when the world has ended or stopped, are the ones that band together, where neighbors support neighbors and protect their own. Those are the kinds of places that will continue to rebuild, that will start to recreate the kind of society they came from.
Unfortunately for Dany, she was on a road trip when everything came to a halt. All she had at the time was two changes of clothes, two days' worth of food, two gas cans she filled after an attendant told her what had happened, and two guns. She picked up the revolver later. She'd driven straight through the night in her dad's old truck and taken a phone call halfway through, the last time she would hear her parents' voices.
She was alone from the beginning. An empty house greeted her when she pulled in with the fleeting whim that she could drive to meet her family, and she tore through it for bags and clothes and shelf-stable food and extra knives. She threatened a man who wanted to ransack but didn't shoot him, and nearly had a heart attack when she saw the boxy green bag that her parents had left behind. It was the first thing she took with her.
Community is survival, in a world that's stopped moving. Safety in numbers, like Robin said. But Dany is capable of surviving on her own. She's done it for months, now. She doesn't think Robin would make it so well, though, and- Dany isn't cruel. She doesn't want to hurt him if she doesn't have to, and she would love to leave him behind as soon as the sun rises, but he'd probably starve, the absolute idiot.
She sets off just after dawn, the forest sparser than she'd thought in the night. Robin, groggy, confused, follows. He tries to start conversation, tries to get her to talk, and Dany just ignores him. Let the guy stay curious. He doesn't get to know anything about her. She keeps a hand on her knife and an eye over her shoulder.
The wind picks up as soon as the trees thin, typical this time of year and hopefully blowing clear some of the ever-present smoke in the sky. Dany pops her collar. Behind her, the tagalong trips on a rock or a root or his own feet, she doesn't know or care. Dany hears him stumble and keeps walking.
"Where are we going?" He asks, eventually, halfway through that afternoon when Dany has finally gotten fed up and stopped to pull out her maps. She's going the right direction, still, which she didn't really doubt.
She glances up at Robin with a ducked head, glaring once again. "I'm going to find my family," she grumbles. "You, on the other hand, are going to the nearest surviving town and staying there."
"So you're going to leave me?"
Dany nods in response, and doesn't look up to see the stubborn look in his eyes. "I don't want a companion," she says, folding the map. She gives him a pointed look. "Or a sidekick."
"Very funny," he mumbles, rolling his eyes. Dany snorts, pushes windswept dark hair from her face, and starts walking again.
The nearest town that might be friendly, might still be civilized, and hopefully won't have scouts who will shoot them on sight, is at least another day's walk out. She doesn't tell Robin that. He'll figure it out.
He was right, when he said that survival is in numbers. It is.
Just not for her.

Freedom Vision Board
As some of you may know I’m taking a tax preparer course. Recently they asked us to do a vision board of how we see our near future. They asked us to go buy poster board from the store and cut up old magazines to paste to the board. Bizarre for a tax course, right? Well they’re all about bettering our and their future.  Considering my current condition, I didn’t feel like going out for some…
