ITS AN AMAZING SHOW, HONEST TO GOD, BUT OP IS COMPLETELY RIGHT ON THE FACT THAT THERE'S SOME SHIT IN THERE. So! Handle it and yourself with care <3 and enjoy
Ppl are heavily recommending scavengers reign and I fully have to agree that it is so so 100% worth the watch it actually changed me as a person. I have NOT seen enough people give explicit enough warnings about the gore and death in it (including towards animals/animal adjacent creatures). I say this as someone who's never gotten uncomfortable with animated gore, I was genuinely triggered by the details of a few scenes. There are also incredibly realistic depictions of some forms of abuse and mental breakdowns/mind breaks. This is not to say it's bad at all, it's so so beautiful and the way it animates these things is immaculate. It handles all of its topics with such precision and care and it's just so good. Just please go into it with the expectation that it WILL make you more than a little uncomfortable and prepare accordingly. If you don't end up that upset, at least you were prepared for it if you did. Be safe while watching I love you all mwa mwa.
#scavengers reign#WATCH IT WATCH IT WATCH IT WATCH IT#IVE REWATCHED IT LIKR FIVE TIMES JUST FOR THE VISUALS#please.#I love it.#Highly recommend to those interested

tbh my latest biggest theory for why HoO and onwards is such a dramatic drop in quality and consistency is just. Rick stopped making teaching guides.
Like, the Lightning Thief teacher's guide is SUPER in-depth with even stuff like sources about middle grade child psychology and exact specifications of where he's applying that, explaining what different character's goals/motivations are, their dynamics with each other and their environments, etc etc. Even specifying which specific myths certain plot elements are supposed to reference or be about.
That stuff just doesn't exist for later books. There's activity guides and smaller, significantly more simple teacher guides for later books but they don't go into anywhere NEAR the same level of depth. The TLT one is a full lesson plan that breaks down the book at every level and explains what's going on and more or less why Rick did that. The others are all basically just glossaries of terminology and some simple question guides.
And they didn't even use the TLT teacher's guide for the Disney+ show because they clearly aren't adhering to any of what's discussed in that breakdown of the book.
By creating a teaching guide alongside writing the actual book, that's forcing you to document what you're doing, why, your sources, and information about your characters and the story they're in. It's like an even more in-depth version of a series bible. But that's lacking for later books (and etc) and it shows because that level of thought and depth and attention just isn't there anymore.
#pjo#riordanverse#rick riordan#rr crit#< i suppose#imo one of the most damning parts of the drop of quality in the later books is you can tell exactly what parts of what books#Rick had planned in advance and which are just filler to get from point a to point b#because characters will jump in and out of consistent behaviors - particularly in HoO - and those lapses where they act weird#are almost always super disconnected from the rest of the plot or storyline or whatever arc that character is on#or are just so clearly sped through because they aren't important#Leo is a great character imo to look at to figure out if it's a filler scene or not lmao#if he's clearly masking being somber by putting on a silly act but dropping it quickly or otherwise largely acting serious/somber#then it's probably a more considered scene and actually paying attention to his overall character arc#or just remembering how the characters are supposed to act (in Leo's case - quiet/thoughtful/somber but masking it with humor/etc)#if he's 100% silly goofy depression arc nowhere in sight then its probably mostly a filler scene or at least his part in it is filler#anyways i highly recommend reading the tlt teaching guide its really interesting actually

just realized that with the combination of the mods Lock Those Doors and Forced Entry, murderfreak can now very literally break into people's houses in the dead of night with a fire axe, and then, of course, axe murder and/or axe freak them. this is enrichment in murderfreak's enclosure
#highly recommending both of these mods btw!#lock those doors is great for discouraging players from raiding every single household they come across#unless it's something they are doing intentionally; in which case you must now become an actual burglar and act like one; which is fun!#and then forced entry is the only lock-destruction mod i've found to be well-balanced enough to not obsolete regular lockpicking entirely#lock destruction costs resources (including both your time and your silence) and forces you to make fair and educated gambles#making it a very rich and interesting alternative to the safer and more consistent skill of lockpicking the regular way#murderfreak#mods

Pathfinders to Venus (ABC, 1961)
"What a paradise this place is. The way Earth must have been before man spoiled it with sprawling towns and filthy machines."
"If it hadn't been for man's filthy machines we wouldn't be here."
"That's true. And the pity of it is that after us will come rocket after rocket to ravage this planet. They'll gouge the minerals out of the earth, destroy the forests and eventually they'll go to war over it."
#pathfinders to venus#1961#children's television#classic tv#abc#malcolm hulke#eric paice#guy verney#reginald collin#gerald flood#george coulouris#graydon gould#pamela barney#hester cameron#stewart guidotti#brigid skemp#hugh evans#bob bryan#astor sklair#robert james#third and final sequel to the sadly missing Target Luna serial; this one picks up immediately after the previous story‚ Pathfinders to Mars#and sees our heroic group once again strongarmed into space exploration by the trickery of George Coulouris (bf's hatred for the character#reached new strengths during this series). this serial delves further into the sci fi fantasy vibe: where Space saw some remnants of#interstellar travel discovered and Mars had some plants and stuff‚ this one has full on alien contact with the native Venusians (handily#very much humanoid). this one also allows the real world to intrude more simultaneously tho; the Cold War‚ having hummed along happily very#much in the background so far‚ gets faced head on here as US and Soviet interests finally start to complicate the plans of our plucky (and#somehow‚ so far‚ entirely apolitical) British explorers. good old Mac Hulke gets a couple of very strong and very prescient environmental#messages in too‚ prefiguring his work on Doctor Who in the 70s (and right you were Mac‚ tho did you have to give those lines to the maniac#character who keeps almost getting everybody killed because of his blind insistence on seeking out some great Spacey Truth..)#these serials have been a lot of fun and I'd highly recommend them to any fan of old tv or old sci fi or DW or the like

I'm gonna be meta for a little bit, but huge shout out to George Lever (Sleep Token's previous producer).
Like, don't get me wrong, I love Carl Bown (he's worked with soo many of my favourite bands and killed it), and I love that Vessel himself got involved in the producing process of TMBTE. The album is amazing, everything sounds extremely clean and professional, and very, very concise.
But George Lever? That guy has a way with music that just... It's very innate. I think One was self-produced (although I'm not entirely sure), but everything else apart from TMBTE was produced by him - and you can tell.
There's this very raw and organic feeling to his work that I think it's quite rare to find nowadays. Especially the drums - I really wish he could've been the one mixing it for the last album because man, he just gets it.
When I first listened to Eden, I remember thinking "man, this drummer is insane". But then I went all the way back to One and slowly made my way to TPWBYT and ket me tell you, Jaws' drum line left me flabbergasted. I know that George and ii have been friends/working together for quite a while prior to ST, so maybe that's one reason why. But they just work so well together, everything sounds so clear and crisp, it feels almost impossible.
This is not to discredit the amazing, fenomenal work done on TMBTE - there's a reason why it's my favourite album and why it gained the traction it did - nor to downplay ii's insane skills (as if one could ever do that, he's just that good). But George's work with ST is just so, so brilliant, and I really needed to put it out there.
It's been a while since I've checked in on him, but it seems he's a bit inactive nowadays? Idk. Whatever the reason why he's no longer working with them, or why he's a bit mia (or was for a while), I wish him all the best, and I'm just so thankful for all his hard work.
#his work on tpwbyt in particular is just - fantastic#i do think it speaks volumes to the kind of artists vessel and ii are#they're obviously incredibly talented and knowledgeable and they have a very genuine approach to their work#they seem to be very careful and particular in choosing the people they work with and how their music is supposed to sound#if you haven't seen George's q&a on the subreddit i highly recommend you do. also his yt channel#i love the way he talks about his work and mindset. it's so very interesting#all of this to say that one of the reasons st is so successful comes from the amazing team behind it and all those surrounding them#it really makes a difference when you have the right people working with you. and it makes me appreciate all the background people even more#cus at the end of the day sleep token is not just 2 or 4 or 7 people - it's everyone involved#excuse my ramblings but yeah. feeling very grateful on this friday night#george lever#sleep token#darya is unhinged

one of the more funny things that i've seen in bg3 fic, i think because there's a fair number of people playing the game for whom this is their intro to dnd, is the general assumption that astarion wouldn't be able to sire a child
ok genuine question, but how would that happen? is he not undead? because from what i unerstand it can oly happen if the mother is turned while she is csrrying the child.
so while i can't exactly answer why it works, one of the available origins for the dhampir as introduced in Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft is the most straightforward way a dhampir would exist: one of their parents is a vampire. since this is in canon faerun and it looks like candlekeep is canon, i am operating on the assumption that the new ravenloft lore is also canon (would be cool to maybe go to a domain of dread in a future expansion or DLC; a run-in with azalin rex would certainly be challenging for even a party above level 12 and strahd could absolutely be tweaked that way in barovia; it'd be cool to see the grand conjunction come back into the lore but i digress)
now in fairness, there is also precedent in older editions of DND for some intelligent undead being able to reproduce; my best guess is that the difference lies in if the undead in question was resurrected from the grave directly and started at baseline dead or if they were somehow transformed and therefore started from baseline alive (eg vampires, liches, etc) but this is purely conjecture
so, yeah, no, you could definitely have a kid with astarion, the kid in question would be a dhampir which you can read more about at this link if you're interested
thanks for the question!
#baldur's gate 3#astarion#mothspeak#van richten's added a lot of interesting things to the canon#i highly recommend digging into it a bit if you get a chance#i don't love EVERYTHING in it#and i am not completely happy with the rerelease of curse of strahd i think older editions had a lot interesting stuff in them#that got cut a little arbitrarily#i do like the decision to rewrite van richten and the vistani#dnd tends to be one of those things where you keep what you like and dispose the rest#this can totally be one of those things btw!#there's nothing stopping you from ignoring the dhampir!#it just amused me a little that the general assumption was that it was baseline not possible

yeah im thinking about the full version of 1・2・3 again yeah its making my brain a little mushy about The Characters
#taylor.txt#the lyrics in that song are insane has ANYONE gone through and determined which parts are sung by whom#because im bad at distinguishing voices so some parts im not sure if its both of them or not#either way lyrically this song is crazy. like its not the only ash and companion duet op but it has VASTLY different flavour#high touch walked so 1・2・3 could run frankly and boy did it ever#i would so happily analyze the full version lyrics so hard if anyone asked just saying#thematically goh is such a good companion and yeah WHATEVER we know im biased by shipping goggles but like. they did something so#INTERESTING and UNIQUE with that dynamic which is really compounded in jn being ash’s last series#and it reflects so well in the lyrics of the song like there is so much to say about their development as characters#and its so interesting compared to say high touch where its like. yeah this is a song ABOUT their relationship#1・2・3 is arguably that as well but fundamentally its all in the thesis of the series which is about how relationships strengthen your#INDIVIDUAL goals and actions and shape you as a Person and how those are things that like#yeah other people influence you and motivate you but at the end of the day youre still making the choice to try but whatever choice you make#that friendship doesnt just go away. it bolsters you! makes you a better person! helps you grow up!!!#idk what im saying now idk i just head full. many thoughts. btw if you havent listened to the full version like. fully. highly recommend#its just a genuinely good song like tbh it has no right being such an unironic bop but it is and i love it

I was thinking about this while helping my friend beta something yesterday like… I vaguely remember that at one time, I felt (punctuation) periods were too harsh. They had a sense of finality about them. They were too loud and vibrant. Commas were more comforting to use. They felt softer and not as exact. And then I look at my writing now and there's nothing I love more than a period. I love how sharp it is. I love its finality.
Like I can't understate enough how much a period makes a statement. Like that's what it's supposed to do, yes, but it's more than that. It tells the audience that what precedes is true. It's a fact. And when you yield a period properly, it emphasizes and highlights what is stated. It stands out. It's final. It has weight. It's such a powerful thing that it's addicting to use.
#thoughts#personal#writing#i should be putting this in the main post but the main post has a vibe that i don't want to interrupt#the way to properly wield a period is by varying the lengths of your sentences#a good key to remember is that long sentences are meant for providing information#*long sentences are not meant to stand out*#when you want to highlight something that is key you use a short sentence#making it short makes it clear to the audience that the statement is meant to hold weight#however it is important to keep variety in the lengths of your sentences#a short sentence after a short sentence does not stand out as much as a short sentence after a long sentence#think of it like this#if you have two short people standing next to each other they look normal#if you put a short person next to someone really tall it makes the short person look shorter than they actually are#their shortness really stands out#this is called juxtaposition#i can make a whole essay based off of the importance of juxtaposition too HAHA#periods can be loud but i highly recommend trying to learn how to use them#one of you said you like hearing my thought process when i write so i hope you find this one interesting!!#now i'm gonna speak more off the top of my head but i feel that ppl that dislike periods are very sensitive to the flow in their stories#there is a flow to a sentence when you use commas and periods tend to disrupt that flow#a period/short sentence is too abrupt and jarring#at least that's what i assume they feel#however imho i feel ppl that feel this way are overly sensitive to the flow they perceive exists in their sentences/paragraphs#i have to tell myself this constantly that things that flow seamlessly aren't always a good thing#imagine your writing like an orchestral piece. are they always flowy and legato? or are there moments where the music jumps or changes?#and what do those sudden jumps do? they wake the audience. they catch the audience's attention. they add variety and interest#imagine an orchestral piece that the tempo never changes. the volume never shifts. every note bleeds into the next#you get put to sleep!#so a period may seem abrupt in the scheme of the sentence but look at it from the view of the whole paragraph. it may be better than u thin

You know, I considered keeping these in my inbox, make it an aquarium, but I think it's best if I set them free Just look at how shiny they are!! Absolutely lovely little dudes, I love their coloring and frilly fins
#thank you so much for sending me these!!#they made my week tbh#goofy little fellas#Their names are really interesting too! They are also called 'Devils Hole Fish' in english#And 'Teufelskärpfling' in german which roughly translates to 'Devils finfish' in english#They are about 2 to 3 cm long which is like one or two inches I think? I have no idea about inches and all that#The individuals in this image are (as seen in the file name) male which can be seen in their blue color; in general they are silvery white#(with in general I mean outside the mating season; the female fish are silver all the time iirc)#They are endangered and only live in one place which is also where they were discovered around 1830? or 1890...or 1930? I hate numbers :(#it's one of those I'm sure#That place would be a limestone basin above a warm water source called the Devils hole (hence the name of the fish)#That water source is located 15m underneath the ground and the basin above it is about as big as a small room I'd say#People have tried to grow the population artifically but it failed which is tragic since the population in that basin is still declining#as far as I know at least; it's possible I missed something and it went back up again but last I knew there were like only... 110 of them?#This is because of a pump station located very closely to this Devil's hole (can you see I find that name is amusing?)#is stopping the water in that basin from rising; and therefore endangering the habitat of these fish#The close by Hover Damn is also responsible for this and researching this I did not expect this name to pop up#Fallout New Vegas follows me everywhere it would seem#And also! They eat diatoms which are some funky looking things as well! Algae if I remember correctly#I highly highly highly recommend looking at pictures of those#They are pretty pretty; trust me on this#Also; and feel free to ignore this; but these guys give me Mirage and V1 from Ultrakill vibes#based on the color mostly#Although really; show me anything blue and metallic and I will find a way to make it about them#Don't even get me started on color associations; I will not shut up and that is a promise#I could make one of those 5 hour breakdowns of why which shade of any color makes me think of the little idiots that occupy my mind 24/7

thinking about the documentary of a couple's aibo who had been their family dog for years "dying" because parts have become so rare and theres almost nobody who can service some of the older models. i feel like theres so much i could say about this stuff and it makes me so emotional
#i dont remember whats its called but i do recommend it.. but it is sad#for those who dont know aibo are a line of robotic dogs that are highly programmable with lots of different personalities#the latest models require a paid cloud subscription which is a whole different level of ougdh#like sure theyre just 'toys' but its also a companion you can have for years and years#and one dying because its parts have become obsolete versus losing it because you cant pay to keep it alive anymore...#idk theres so much to be said its a topic im very interested in#ive always wanted an aibo but the new models have the forementioned issue and the old ones are very delicate to find and maintain#both are very expensive endeavors

Some other resources that might be worth checking out (not strictly about faeries but related):
The Corpus of Electronic Texts, or CELT, a collection of Irish cultural materials. This includes English translations of Irish myths.
Mary Jones - similar to CELT, and a resource we used for translations in the Irish mythology class I took in undergrad.
An Encyclopedia of Fairies by Katherine Mary Briggs, a British folklorist.
The Folklore of Cornwall by Ronald M. James. Unfortunately this book is harder to access and is often only in university libraries, but if you're interested in piskies it's a potentially very helpful read.
Traditions and Hearthside Stories of West Cornwall by William Bottrell.
YALL. Holly Black has a list of resources she's used for writing her books on the fair folk. I'm OBSESSED. I love her work and world building. it's so true to the heart of faeries
#I am not an expert but I have spent a good number of hours learning Celtic folklore stuff beyond my uni class#I highly highly recommend paying attention to the source cultures of the faeries you're interested in. it may not be Ireland!#and those cultures are important to the nature of said faeries. different landscapes - different practices - different clothes etc.#I've heard conflicting things about Yeats. but as with even the things I am recommending it's important to remember that#while folklore traditions are not strictly bordered and do mix together it's equally easy to misrepresent them#especially when Celtic cultures and languages have faced colonization and the threat of obliteration#be mindful. be critical. do a LOT of research and see who's pulling from who. and listen to people from those cultures#esp where they're documenting their own folklore#celtic folklore#resources

Memories of a Woodland Spectre
Ah, good to see you! Come on in, sit down.
I apologize for the mess; been busy, you know how it is.
Can I get you anything to drink? I've just opened this bottle of scotch. Grandpa loves it!
Listen, I wanted to tell you a story, if you'd like.
I was walking out in the forest where the trees wrap their branches around me, on my way to my thinking rock.
This time of year there's no footprints, at least not from people, and everything's covered in snow, so I'm just trying to find the way on pure intuition. So I pass by this blue spruce with kind of a funny whoville top so I know I'm going the right way, and that's when I see these two bears, and you're going to think I'm out of my tree but I swear to whatever god is around here,
I could hear them.
There was a big one and a little one, and the big one spoke, and the little one listened and nodded, and I froze in my tracks.
These big, majestic, frankly terrifying creatures were right there, and I'm not about to try to speak bear, so I sat down and listened too, because I was there to think anyway and I might as well have something to think about.
The big bear talked about some travellers that came in a big metal box full of metal boxes, all of which spoke languages older than the hills. When she talked about being observed by them, I felt a little guilty- she said they followed her wherever she went, watched what she ate, who she met, and never once even tried to understand her. They could have just asked, of course!
Then she mentioned a little girl who came and talked to her a few years ago.
The girl had explained that those were scientists, and the little bear asked what that was, and the big bear explained that scientists are people who really want to know everything. The little bear asked wouldn't that be boring, and the big one agreed, but she said it was okay because they never knew what she was like anyway. They didn't know how to fish without a metal box, they didn't know how to talk without a box, they even slept in boxes full of sorted groups of each other.
It sounded like the scientists just want to put things in boxes, the little bear said, and I laughed because he didn't know how right he was.
So back to that little girl. The way the bear told it, the little girl explained that not all people are scientists, and some people really like and trust them but some people don't. And she said her dad was a scientist who really liked nature, and she really liked nature too, but she thought the scientists didn't understand.
And the big bear didn't speak human but she listened and listened. Every day the girl would find the bear, and every day the bear would listen, and the girl would say I like you, you're a good friend, and the big bear would reply. I couldn’t understand the word she used, but it was sort of a knowing, patient growl.
They played and talked and looked at the clouds and the girl and the bear got older, loved, tried new things, told stories, knew each other.
The little bear had a hundred questions on his face but only asked a careful one: what happened to the girl?
The answer was that one day, the girl came and painted the big bear, and the bear was a good model, and the painting looked beautiful.
She didn't need a box to make art, she didn't even need every colour. She could make colours by mixing the dirt from the forest with the sparkle in her eyes.
After that, she thanked the bear and disappeared for a while. When she came back, she looked sick. Her body was healthy, but her eyes were dark.
I promised, the big bear said, to keep secret what she told me. So I won't disrespect her. But the last thing the girl said in this version of the story was that there will never be a box that could fit either of them.
The big bear said this was good advice, but she wasn't a scientist and she didn't need boxes anyway, so she wasn't really sure what that meant.
The little bear simply looked thoughtfully.
With that, the bears disappeared into the snowy brush.
I never made it to my thinking rock that day. I went home, because I had too much to think about.
Never did fully make sense of it all.
I didn't expect you to have any idea either, don't worry.
You're an artist now, aren't you? Much better line of work than the old neighbours, I don't know what they did but they were so damn loud...
Anyhow, it's nice to see your family back around here, we missed y’all.
Oh, and apropos of nothing, I love that tattoo on your arm. Tell me the story behind those three stars in a row?
#i cannot be left to my own devices during english classes#also for those in uni with the option#i highly recommend taking a more interesting english class than the basic critical analysis#i'm taking indigenous literature and it's fascinating
