Could BotW’s Hyrule be an unflooded Wind Waker?
Oh boy, buckle up because I have a whole conspiracy theory.
So this whole thing started as I was browsing the Nintendo Gallery in Wind Waker and came across this on Ganondorf’s figurine:
I was like: huh. That looks awful similar to Zonai Constructs. These were the closest I found but looking at it once you’re used to Zonai technology, you see the resemblance pretty clearly.
I know I’m not the first to notice the resemblance to Gohdan either, boss in the Tower of the Gods (we’ll come back to that) because this convenient picture exists.
But so what, right? It can’t be Wind Waker’s Hyrule anyway because it’s not the end of the timeline, right? WRONG. It may be the first in the adult timeline but it’s also the last in that timeline to take place in Hyrule. Phantom Hourglass takes place in the World of the Ocean King, Oshus’s dream if I remember correctly but most importantly, not Hyrule, and Spirit Tracks takes place in New Hyrule, one that Tetra and Link founded later. It is not the same land.
Ganondorf ends up dying at the end of Wind Waker with the Master Sword stabbed through his head (cough cough, we’ll come back to this too). The Triforce is used by King Daphnes, the exact words as follows:
“Gods of the Triforce! Hear that which I desire! Hope! I desire hope for these children! Give them a future! Wash away this ancient land of Hyrule! Let a ray of hope shine on the future of the world!!! And let our destinies finally be fulfilled…”
Granted this is the English translation and I don’t know Japanese, so if anyone is able to translate this scene from the original Japanese that would fly in the face of what I’m talking about please make it known.
King Daphnes wished for Hyrule to be washed away, specifically his Hyrule that he’d been clinging so desperately to. If this is indeed the same land we see from the Zonai in TotK, then the old kingdom would’ve been gone long enough to not be recognizable. He also mentions a ray of hope for the world. This is obviously referring to Tetra, Link and eventually New Hyrule but I wouldn’t put it passed the Goddesses to revive the land now that the danger is passed. And that’s another thing!
The whole reason the world flooded in the first place was because of Ganon, now that he’s died, there’s no reason for it to stay flooded. I seem to recall there being a comment somewhere in the game that went something to the effect of “there’s no fish in these waters to catch because it’s magic god water” I don’t remember where it was but do correct me if I’m wrong.
Geography was another big thing. Zelda geography has never been exactly consistent, I always assumed it was because such large chunks of time were going by that tectonic plates had shifted everything now and then. However, Wind Waker and the BotW maps are surprisingly aligned.
Death Mountain and Dragon Roost are easy examples, the Forest Haven is in a similar location to Mount Lanayru and is in proximity to the ice island. The Forsaken Fortress is aligned with Hebra Peak, Outset Island is shaped roughly like Spectacle Rock in the Gerudo Highlands, the Gerudo Highlands in general, and interestingly enough, Satori Mountain is very close to the Great Fish Isles. Plus there’s a lot of other miscellaneous peaks in BotW.
Something else very interesting, the final boss arena lines up rather well with being either near the castle, or perhaps the Great Plateau. A friend I was playing with when I first discovered this pointed out how proportionately small the people are, and normally you don’t notice that, it’s a very stylized game. But maybe, perhaps the reason the world feels so big was because the Hyruleans evolved to simply take up less space on the islands?
Something else interesting is Luralin Village. We’ve never really seen a fishing village before besides in Wind Waker with Outset.
To finish off the miscellaneous details I’ve noticed, the sword pose. It’s suspiciously similar to the one Rauru has Ganon in in Tears of the Kingdom. Here’s the two side by side.
Now onto my heaviest hitters, the salt thing and the races.
As most people who’ve spent anytime debating BotW’s place in the timeline is aware, the rock salt description mentions it came from an ancient sea. This could be the Lanayru Sand Sea all the way back in Skyward Sword, in which case, why isn’t it localized to the desert area it was in? Or it’s from the Great Sea. Not much, but it’s very much suspicious.
The other big one is the Rito’s presence along with the Zora. Besides the games in question, the Rito only ever appear in the Wind Waker. We know based on the Zora iconography as well as Laruto, a Zora, being Medli’s ancestor as well as that special magic water comment from earlier I believe. So how can the Zora exist alongside them if they came from them? Answer: the Fish Map Men. They fill out your map as you travel through the islands, and on top of that, there’s a lot of Gyorgs swimming around. What is Sidon molded after again? A hammerhead shark. It’s likely a new species of Zora evolved from the sentient Fishmen, this time with more variety. The Zora monuments mentioning Ruto? Left over and well preserved under the waves, maybe like how Hyrule Castle was.
Tito weren’t the only unique race in Wind Waker, Koroks were as well. As I’m sure we’re all well aware, they are present in both BotW and TotK. They’re descended from the Kokiri, and there’s not a shred of evidence to suggest that the Kokiri ever came back. It’s likely they just stayed Koroks and since Kokiri don’t age and stay kids forever, and that trait likely carried over to the Koroks if they’re behavior is anything to go by, they just keep multiplying…
And finally, the Zonai themselves. All this started because I noticed Ganondorf was wearing what appeared to be Zonai accessories. Gohdan is said to be a trial placed by the Gods themselves. The Zonai descended from the heavens to settle Hyrule, it’s not illogical to assume that the Tower of the Gods was built at the behest of the Gods, by the Zonai. Perhaps one of Rauru’s ancestors. The Zonai also have extremely long ears, and it’s said in Ocarina of Time that Hylians have long ears so that they may hear the whispers of the gods. Wouldn’t those closer have longer ears then?
One last little thing I couldn’t seem to fit anywhere, isn’t it weird how Rauru’s name is one we recognize and yet Sonya isn’t? The Oocca canonically speak a different language than Hylians, perhaps the Zonai originally did as well and simply adopted Hyrulean names to better fit in. Rauru was arguably the most important sage. He could have chosen in to appear more humble while still showing his importance. Alternatively he didn’t want to disrespect the dead king by taking his name and/or it would seem arrogant.

The full gang has survived the oven and they’re good to go! The only thing we lost was one of the tassels on Seyka’s scarf… an acceptable sacrifice to the Sculpey Gods.
From left to right, we have Mooloy, an additionally fluffy Highland Cow Beta, Wolf Varl, Bearend, Hawklanah (who is really big for some reason), Lioness Zo, Snowtallo Leopard, pink Kitten Alva, Arctic Fox Ikrie, and Flying Fish Seyka!
I am OUT of the relevant colors, but someday I’d like to add Rost, GAIA and Lis to the lineup… perhaps in the new year. And after I figure out what kind of animal GAIA is… a sea turtle with the world on her shell, maybe? And what would Sylens be?
(And of course I’m gonna have to do Lobster Tilda at some point, I can’t NOT)
#horizon zero dawn#horizon forbidden west#Aloy#beta#Varl#erend vanguardsman#talanah khane padish#zo#kotallo#alva#ikrie#seyka#I love working with clay :)#obviously Lis would also be a moo and Rost would be a boar :)

Map Spotlight #3: The Jagged Island
Just off the coast of Sharq-Tooth Beach is an island. It juts up into the sky, black rock contrasting with vibrant foliage. It was quickly discovered to be an island formed by the death of a Zorah Magdaros. It is primarily populated by leviathans and piscine wyverns, and as such has a lot of ecological overlap with the Beach, however it is also inhabited by a variety of bird wyverns and flying wyverns.
Coral Pukei Pukei can be found on the island. It is unsure if they adapted there separately from the population in the Coral Highlands of the New World, or if they migrated to the island from the New World. They tend to stay to the lower to mid levels of the Island, where there are larger spaces for pools of water to form. The thrive on the mushrooms that grow in the humid environment.
The upper levels of the island are the domain of Toridcless, who enjoy sunning themselves on the peaks and ledges found there. They can be seen diving towards the water to catch fish, and are also know to feed on the hermitaur along the water's edge. Their wings function like solar panels, allowing them to absorb huge amounts of energy, which they will discharge as powerful attacks when in combat.
In the water around the islands, two beasts reign supreme. The Plesioth uses its incredible speed and powerful water beams to feed on everything from average fish, to Epioth, to Ludroth. Their powerful legs also allow them to traverse the lower-most part of the island itself, making them an adaptable predator.
Plesioth are not the only powerful predator patrolling the Island waters, however. Underwater, you may hear the songs or Poborubarumu, a huge, whale-like monster. Using its powerful songs to empower itself, it will then dive down into the depths, hunting for squid. Injuries found on some specimens indicate that there may be a large, squid-like momster that Poborubarumu hunt in the depths, though it is not yet known to the guild what this monster is. This powerful beast is also adapted for movement on land, where it likes to rest away from the dangerous monsters of the deep. On its tail lives a species of particularly hard-shelled barnacles, which it uses to bash opponents behind it.
Beneath the island are a series of enormous caverns, formed by a combination of volcanic activity, and the submerged portion of Zorah Magdaros's body. Swimming in and out of these caverns, one may be so lucky as to see the Shining Giant of the Depths, the Ceadeus. This massive Elder Dragon's remote habitat means it seldom requires the direct attention of the guild, though this does not mean it is a harmless beast. Its sheer power and size, along with its Encounters with this beast are rare, making its behavior something of a mystery. Ceadeus is often content to leave people be, so long as it is given the respect and space that such a beast deserves. Its massive horns, and the bioluminescent organs along its belly, make it truly a sight to behold in the darkness of the ocean depths.

Just curious, where do the lowland curbs go during a volontaro? I assume the highland ones have a nice tall cave somewhere!
Ah, good question. One might also ask where ferryshaft went who were living on the far side of the island before the war. It's implied that there have long been a population of ferryshaft, creasia, and telshees who shared the Great Cave during the volontaro and were committed to a truce during that time. This truce pre-dates the war by many generations and might even pre-date the creasia's ability to speak. It's safe to assume that the creasia have always lived mostly near the Great Cave. Their range is limited by their favored prey (deer) and habitat (dense forests). The Great Cave has always been their preferred refuge. The ferryshaft, however, are much more flexible. For most of ferryshaft history, herds would have been scattered all over the island. The Great Cave can't be the only safe place. I'm talking about this like I don't know the answer, because I don't. If I haven't committed to some world-building detail in the text, it's always up for grabs in future stories. I intentionally leave lots of loose ends, so that I have interesting places to go and things to discover and room to maneuver. So bearing in mind that I could change this later, I'll say that the lowland curbs probably have many different nooks and crannies where they shelter, and these locations have been passed down as carefully guarded secrets within various packs. If the pack is wiped out, the knowledge may be lost. Lowland curbs are tribal and territorial. Packs may cooperate on some large project for a while, but they are prone to bickering and feuding and never quite trust each other. They are much smaller animals than creasia or ferryshaft, and they also live in smaller groups, so a pack of curbs could take refuge some place that would be inadequate for ferryshaft or creasia. Lowland curbs also have a semi-opposable thumb, and they do build things (traps everyone knows about, but also other things). It is not inconceivable that they might build something like a boat or temporary floating structure. It's not impossible to survive in the open during a volonto. The risks would be drowning, getting sucked up by a tornado, or being hit with flying debris. There are also weirder risks, like getting fatally injured by a shark in the middle the plain or stung by a jelly fish. Since it is a magical storm, one might also fall through a randomly opening other way. :)

Whumpy-if-you-squint WIP Wednesday
“Bebé?” Marc said, tightening his arm around Jack’s waist. “If this is too loud, we can go back to the campsite so you can rest.”
Jack opened his eyes and smiled at his partner who’d been gently mother-henning him since he’d "talked" with Ted an hour earlier.
His all-but-gone headache provided a good excuse for why he’d gone quiet as they brainstormed how to save Ted’s home. Jack had been excited to relay what Ted described with a combination of images and words. Although he’d "heard" a deep, garbled voice speaking Spanish, somehow Jack knew Ted wasn’t using verbal language. Whatever it was, it had worked and he was glad.
A month earlier construction had started on a canal a half mile from the part of the Everglades Ted called home. “Home” massively understated what the plant creature felt for the Spanish-moss-draped cypress rising from murky waters. The area teemed with life: sprawling trees, flowering vines, birds, fish, snakes, countless insects, and more. Something like a heartbeat thrummed through it. Jack didn’t know what it was, but it was vast and awe-inspiring.
[ redacted for brevity and extreme first-draftedness ]
How [Ted had] fled explained how a swamp creature had ended up in arid highlands. The power that pulsed in his home connected to other places, one of which was the Three Sisters.
Ted had been away for weeks. He was eager to return but didn’t know if doing so would kill him.
Ted needed to be there. It was a mandate, and Jack would help make it happen.
But it was in Florida, thousands of miles away.
Marc and Layla could probably fly there in a matter of hours, carrying Jack, Bri, and Robin, the latter two in their animal forms. Could they do whatever their plan ended up being in a matter of hours so they could return home quickly? Jack had to get back.
“It’s okay,” Jack told Marc, then widened his gaze to include Layla, Bri, Robin, and Ted. “I want to stay here with you all.”
Ted shifted in the pool of stream water, sending ripples in all directions. The vines near his red eyes and tentacle-like appendages shifted into what felt like a smile, and sympathy flowed from him somehow.
Jack sat a little straighter and studied his new friend. “Did you do that?”
Marc’s arm tightened slightly around Jack; he was such a worrywart.
“Do what?” Bri asked.
After a shoulder-nod, Ted started signing. While the creature spelled out words for Marc to translate, Jack explained, “I felt something when Ted looked at me. Like an emotion that wasn’t mine.”
Robin’s, Bri’s, and Layla’s eyes went wide as Marc stayed focused on Ted’s gestures. “He says he’s an empath,” Marc said, then turned to Jack. “He doesn’t need to touch you to talk to you now. He said he's staying quiet because he doesn’t want to hurt you.”
“Wow,” Jack breathed, smiling with delight. “This is so cool! Straight up X-Men stuff.”

Scottish Historical Lúnasdal & Lammas
There are many theories of where the name Lammas comes from. Some I have come across are:
It could be warped from luna agustalis, which is latin for “August moon.”
It is from “loaf-mass,” which is an alternative name that some people do call it today.
It is an anglicization of Gŵyl Awst, Welsh for “feast of August”
It comes from the Anglo-Saxon “Hlâf-mæsse” which means “loaf mass.”
Lammas is mentioned as a Christian festival, but it does overlap with a pagan one. As like with other cross-quarter day festivals that coincided with church ones, the names and traditions blurred.
Lúnasdal (which has many alternative spellings), is thought to be named after the Irish god Lugh, and the day was once widely celebrated in Scotland and elsewhere. It commonly marked the end of the fishing season, and the start of the harvest season. The day would often see markets, feasts, dancing, and saining.
“This, being a quarter day, formed a great day with old women for saining cattle, and performing those ceremonies by which evil was to be kept away from them for the next three months. Tar was put on their tails and ears, charms (òradh) were said at their udders, red and blue threads were put on their tails, and various observances were gone through with balls of hair (rolag), plants, fire about the earthenware pipkins (crogain) in which milk or butter was to be put, etc. Curds and butter were specially prepared for a great feast held this day, at which it was highly important that everyone got as much as he cared for.” “Witchcraft & Second Sight in The Highlands and Islands of Scotland” by John Gregorson Campbell (1902)
One of the most unique traditions involved a mock-war. Hundreds or more communities of a district would build towers of sod or stone.
“It was for the most part square, about 4 feet in diameter at the bottom, and tapering to a point at the top, which was seldom above 7 feet or eight feet from the ground . In building it a hole was left in the centre for admitting a flagstaff, on which were displayed their colours on the great day of the festival. This tower was generally commenced about a month before Lammas, being seldom entirely completed till close that time.” “Old Scottish Customs, Local and General” by Ellen Emma Guthrie (1885)
As Lammas drew near, the groups would gradually build the tower, fend off any saboteurs, pick a captain, then find themselves a flag (colours) that would be put up in the tower.
For this purpose they borrowed a fine table – napkin of the largest size from one of the farmers ‘ wives within the district , and ornamented it with ribbons. “British Popular Customs, Present and Past; Illustrating the Social and Domestic” by T. F. Thiselton-Dyer (1911)
On Lammas itself, they would set out with cudgels(a bat-like weapon), and protect their tower by any means possible, even if it included bloodshed. Some would set out, with the goal of toppling enemy towers. If the attacked stopped by mid-day, flags would be removed, and the crowds would head back to their communities while blowing horns. From then, races and other fin would be held.
For a strange bit of folklore, Lammas was said to take an eye of gadflies(horseflies), making them less dangerous.
"On Lammas day, the gad-fly “loses one of its eyes” (Latha Lùnasdal caillidh chreithleag an leth shùil). The creature is not so vicious after this date.’" “Witchcraft & Second Sight in The Highlands and Islands of Scotland” by John Gregorson Campbell (1902)
Lammas Market (for ‘St Andrews: its Character and Tradition’)

So that ten facts characters thing, it didn't specifically say original characters... but it also said my characters.. but idk sometimes people feel like they have a claim on a blorbo or something.
Um... anyway give me ten facts about Rae (and only if you're up to it, ten facts about Warren?)
Oooh thank you! Let's see... under the cut for space
Rae:
Often speaks with a faint Scottish accent, but it gets thicker when she's tired
Is actually quite handy around the house - her father's a carpenter, and taught her and her sisters quite a bit about general repairs
Can speak seven languages fluently, but can count to ten in over 20
Went through a phase when she was about twelve of pretending she was a mutant with a hidden mutation (most of her friends were mutants who had just recently come into their mutations and she got jealous)
If Apocalypse hadn't forcibly expressed her mutation, it only would have been expressed through an extremely physically stressful event (like a car accident, or going into labor)
The only pets she's ever had were fish (her mom is allergic to pet dander, and as an adult Rae moves around too much to have a pet)
Was once dared by her friends to try and ride one of the Highland cattle they found out in a field somewhere (she did it)
Once got into a fight on Jess' behalf after her Prom date stood her up. Rae go a three-day suspension for it, but the boy apologized to Jess
Doesn't remember when exactly her phobia developed, but her earliest memory of it is going into a panic attack in the middle of English class bc one of her classmates kept reading her mind to get the answers (and she could sense it happening)
Once they're reasonably settled-down, she and Warren take dance classes together :)
Warren (it's blorbo time babyyyy):
Canon middle name is Kenneth
Once appeared in the comics as a character called "The Fallen", with bat wings
Once appeared in the comics with cosmic/fire wings in X-Men Blue
In Marvel 1602, his name is changed to Werner
Both actors who have played his adult, live-action versions were named Ben (Ben Hardy in Apocalypse and Ben Foster in Last Stand - and I say adult because the kid-Warren at the start of Last Stand is played by an actor named Cayden Boyd)
In the comics, once was mocked for having "the largest shoulder blades I've ever seen" (paraphrased)
His wings in The Last Stand were such a big project that they had a dedicated feather department for the special effects crew. It was led by Laurel Taylor
Canonically can lift his own weight plus 200 pounds when flying
Canonically, his mutation prevents his body from storing excess body fat (so that he can get himself off the ground and fly effectively)
In the comics, strikes up a romance with Psylocke after both of them were involved in the business with Apocalypse. He's also had a relationship with a non-mutant named Candy Southern
#i kid you not coming up with ten of warren's was EASIER than coming up with ten for rae#my friends!!!#answered asks#ask game#my ocs#rae mckinney

𝐖𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐄: Highland Hospital
Mercer first contemplated the beams of fluorescents when she came to, squinting under the harsh light as the scent of antiseptic chemicals wafted past her signalling that she was in fact in the emergency room, strewn out across a bed with a thin curtain concealing her privacy ─ lovely. The last thing she could recall was a fly fishing expedition in the Chesapeake Bay (more of a business trip), and then her mother picking her up from the train station, despite her protests, so they could "talk about something".
Adjusting her cardigan and then combing her fingers through her hair, her mother's voice came into earshot, over the PA system, informing the doctor of her concerns that her daughter has whiplash and then excusing herself to find a "decent" cup of coffee in the cafeteria. Her plan of exit was to check herself out and send a text later, but to do that, she'd have to get a doctor or nurse to sign off on that. An unsteady trail led her to the doorway only to be met with someone coming to check on her ─ perfect timing, Mercer stumbling out of the way, perhaps a bit more hazy than she led on. Just her luck too, as it's none other than a being from her past; her married life, still like a fresh wound as she ushers a smile to the front. "Aren't you a sight for sore eyes, Maeve Chapman," Using the other woman to steady her stance, Mercer regards her, unfazed, as if they're old friends and perhaps they are, "I was just wondering how I was gonna bribe the nurse to let me out of here."

Our Scotland trip 2024
Over the past week we have been on a wild adventure in Scotland, independently (rather then on an organised tour this time) we visited locations in the Cairngorms where we were based, wider Highlands and Moray to look for wildlife and we managed to cover many places and see so much incredible wildlife which was thrilling and fantastic.
Alongside all the big wild locations visited we need to look no further than the cottage we stayed in near Duthil near Carr Bridge for exciting wildlife experiences on many occasions, set in gorgeous countryside with a view over a vast area including the impressive Cairn Gorm range and some lovely wetland and pine woodland nearby, we saw so much wildlife. Singing Willow Warblers, a sensation of the holiday it’s amazing to think the one I saw as soon as we arrived was my first of the year given how many we’ve seen and heard this week, and charming Brown Hares getting some of my closest ever views of them were a constant. Curlew, Oystercatcher, Lapwing, Teal, Rook, Buzzard, Chaffinch, Skylark, beautiful Yellowhammer, Red-legged Partridge, Pheasants, amazing scenes of Pink-footed flying over a valuable chance for us to see them this year, Peacock and Small Tortoiseshell butterflies, Cuckoo heard, Roe Deers, Crossbill and oil beetle in the woodland and only my second ever Stoat were some of the other amazing species seen with many seen whilst having breakfast.
After enjoying the quirky sight of Oystercatchers (what would go onto be a star of the trip) on a roadside verge by the hotel we stayed in near Preston to break up the outward journey and Blackcap at Ralia services on the way, Sunday arrived and it was time to explore. We firstly headed to the first of many amazing locations we had visited on our past birding tours with Heatherlea in 2018 and 2023, a location with top views of an Osprey nest which is always a breathtaking sight. Then onto Laggan Dam where I’m thrilled that we picked out two stunning summer plumage Black-throated Divers in the beautiful setting of Loch Laggan and the mountains. With rain really set in we headed for Lochindorb securing our first views of Red Grouse this week a key species of the area that we don’t get at home and my first Common Sandpipers of the year. Monday arrived and we went to Strathdearn to search for eagles, finding at least one and maybe two gigantic White-tailed Eagles. In this stunning mountainous landscape along the Findhorn River it was also great to see many Common Sandpipers, Goosander and Wheatear. Later in the day we headed for Chanonry Point where my first Kittiwakes of the year, Gannet and Razorbill were waiting. On the way and way back so far north it was brilliant to see my first Hooded Crows of the trip another novelty to us not resident at home.
We headed for the Moray coast on Tuesday and were spoilt at Spey Bay with exhilarating moments watching Bottlenose Dolphins, as we saw here last year Ospreys fishing in the river, Red-throated Divers including one in exquisite summer plumage, Common Scoters, a distant Puffin out to sea and thanks to some of many kind like minded people we met on the trip giving us invaluable advice and information on species and locations a lovely White Wagtail. It was then onto RSPB Loch Spynie when as happened last year here we spotted a Tree Sparrow a very valuable species to us alongside Yellowhammer and Brambling. Later that day we were treated to more sensational views of fishing Ospreys over the river at Lossiemouth East Beach a personal favourite location of the Heatherlea trips we’ve done and the gorgeous sight of my first Little Ringed Plover of the year as well as more Gannets. Lovely headland at Burghead beckoned before we headed back to the Cairngorms and on a beautiful sunny spring evening it was great to see Long-tailed Duck, more Gannets, Guillemot, Wheatear and the amazing sight of hundreds of pretty Knots huddled on a rock.
Wednesday brought an early start to see Black Grouse at a lek site that another kind person we met on Monday recommended and it was a pleasure to see these birds evocative of open spaces, before getting astonishing views of Dippers one of my favourite birds that I love seeing at Nethy Bridge in bright sunshine. We then headed for RSPB Loch Garten where just a day before a dramatic nest takeover it was special to see the Ospreys on the nest and the site where Ospreys first nested here. Without that iconic pair from the Scandinavian population settling here and the amazing work of the RSPB to protect the nest Ospreys might not be so successful now across Scotland as we’ve seen this week but also across the whole of the UK with Loch Garten paving the way for the reintroduction programmes elsewhere such as Poole Harbour and especially Rutland Water that has given me so many amazing opportunities to see this bird that I love so much and have such a special bond with over the years. Also standing out that day was precious time hearing Crested Tit and Cuckoo, and seeing Goldeneye, some of many Common Sandpipers this week and Redstart. Next was a stop at Dell Woods where it was nice to see a Red Kite. We ended the day via another look at the Black Grouse spot and seeing them again revisiting Lochindorb to take in the nice views of the castle in clearer weather and we had some of the most magical and intimate wildlife encounters of the trip. Firstly we saw Common Sandpiper and Oystercatcher right at the edge of the loch from the car, then a phenomenal moment as an excellent and dashing Black-throated Diver surfaced right near to us in the car and we were all spellbound watching it and it’s partner getting fabulous views of them. The best views I’d ever got of a rarity in home areas and a species I only saw for the first time in 2020, simply one of my best ever wildlife watching moments. The icing on the cake was a similarly stunning intimate and prolonged encounter with a ravishing Red Grouse by the roadside which was an honour.
Thursday saw our return to Strathdearn when alongside White-tailed Eagle again we achieved a massive trip aim of seeing a Golden Eagle. What a bird, the icon on wilderness. Possibly seeing a Goshawk too, some of the many Buzzards seen on the trip, my first Red Deers of the year and as we took an exciting walk up a mountainous track at Coignafearn a brief view of a Mountain Hare with only a bit of it’s winter white left another iconic species of the area were other highlights with Cuckoo heard. That day on a fine afternoon/evening we moved onto the beautiful RSPB Loch Ruthven. The summer plumage theme of the trip continued here as we were in awe of four summer plumage Slavonian Grebes. A bird we usually see in winter in Hampshire as with last year here it was a magnificent novelty to see them in their summer finery in their breeding grounds. Little Grebe, the serenading song of Willow Warbler and call of Cuckoo and another Osprey seen were also highlights here. Another magical encounter on a sunny morning awaited on a revisit to Dell Woods on Friday when we saw a glorious Red Squirrel, another heartfelt mammal encounter this week. Jay and Willow Warbler were good to see here too before seeing a Dipper at Nethy Bridge passing through again this time seeing their nest on the bridge. Another mountain walk followed that afternoon as like last year we drove up Cairn Gorm and walked a little way. It was breathtaking to take in the beautiful views in the sun and perseverance paid off as we just got a view of a Ring Ouzel late on, a fine final addition to my bird year list of the week which soared to end the holiday on 183 after ticking nineteen species for 2024. Top views of Willow Warbler and Meadow Pipit stood out there too.
On the final morning yesterday we were invigorated once more visiting Loch Garten and Loch Mallachie before beginning the journey back south to home, getting amazing views of Goldeneyes, hearing the loudest calling I’ve heard from a Cuckoo yet this year and seeing and hearing the loud drumming of the Great Spotted Woodpecker. A Grey Heron and Moorhen was nice to see at Milton Loch soon into the journey. It was great to hear Blackbird, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Woodpigeon and Magpie on International Dawn Chorus Day morning at the hotel we stayed in near Warrington to break up the return journey today. Other standout birds throughout the trip included many Common Gulls seeing them in their breeding grounds which is unique for us too as we usually see a handful at most of these at home, Sandwich Tern, Red-breasted Merganser, Greylag Geese, Siskin, Swallow, Sand Martin and enigmatic Ravens seen and heard a lot. Mountain Goats at Strathdearn alongside Highland Cattle a nice sight of the area and Sheep on the trip were nice to see.
Butterflies very much played a big role on the spring trip especially when it got sunnier with the Small Tortoiseshells at the cottage and Peacock across the week joined by Orange Tip and Green-veined White and I saw moths too including The Streamer at the cottage. A Green Tiger beetle, an incredible and exuberant species, on the path at Coignafearn was another insect of the trip as were regular bees. It was a fantastic floral week too with it nice to see seas of daffodils a beautiful sight now passed at home. Wood sorrel was a revelation of the week in the Abernethy Forest at Loch Garten and at Loch Ruthven, beautiful flowers adorning the forest floor. Wood anemone, lesser celandine, marsh marigold, gorse, broom, dandelion, daisy, violets, red deadnettle, thrift, scurvygrass, primroses, ferns, bog myrtle, wood rush especially at the cottage and a bit of groundsel there and stunning coltsfoot on Cairn Gorm were other highlights. It was good to see fungi clinging to trees including hoof fungus and much lichen and moss.
It really was so awe-inspiring seeing all this wildlife and being in the vast mountainous landscape and also enjoying woodland, coast, wetland, moors, lochs and pretty whitewater and otherwise rivers. I found this week so fulfilling, captivating and inspiring and it brought me such valuable and refreshing tranquility. I am sad this anticipated amazing week is over and I feel it will have a lasting impact on me as I hold dear many fantastic memories from the trip.
The photos in this set from the trip are of; one of the Crossbills, a view at Pattack Falls where we briefly called into, the lighthouse at Chanonry Point, Herring Gull at Chanonry Point, one of the Willow Warblers on one of my morning walks from the cottage, Small Tortoiseshell on a dandelion in the cottage garden, daffodil at Ralia services on the way, the Knots at Burghead, a beautiful view at Loch Garten and the Red Grouse we got close to at Lochindorb.

oh yeah uh splatoon au world building, specifically A New Run AU
In this AU humanoids are spread across 3 different elevations which house different creatures depending on their proximity to the water surface placing them either near the shores; Lowlands, in the middle; highlands, and high in the mountains though specifically in their dark valleys; deeplands.
The highlands are your standard inklings and octolings and other familiars.
Different animals live between the different elevations, sometimes in more than one.
Walruses and Seals are now built different (dogs!!!!!). They are used in service such as ones who need a guide, support and more. May even be pets.
Flamingoes formerly grew to immense heights being able to sift through crowds of prey instead of just the waters, main target being dense cities. Everyone eventually was aware of this and began to hide, making them migrate elsewhere only to reappear as only double an inkling's height. They are used in parades in some towns.
Herons grew and stopped at the modern Flamingo's size, flocking to the valleys as it takes care of the shadowing job they do to attract fish. They eventually grew stronger beaks and soon barely could fly but have strong legs and bones. In deep they're used in construction.
Ospreys are pretty much the same. They were used as scouting birds during the Great Turf War to know how far the enemies were. Now they're just funny pets.
Sea honses, including leafy sea dragons, are kinda basically horses. Leafies are used in contests while regulars are used in racing or just general riding. These guys are now way bigger than last time, around a house height. Mostly in rural highland cities.
Finally Kapi and Molly (working name) are both Deep city celebrities as well as both being dumbo octolings.

Anya
So you think physics is boring? You’ve never been to one of Anya’s night classes.
Booty Guard
That wry old devil Khallos has an elite corps of extremely personal bodyguards who attend to his special needs and maniacal whims. Only women can apply--how's that for positive discrimination and enlightened recruitment policies.
Candi Skyler
She's still got a cute butt and she's just been promoted to fleet command. Surely there's no connection?
Changeling
Looks like Maiden forgot to put her makeup on this morning...
Chastity Detroit
The chic cyberpunk crimebuster returns.
Chinese Chef
The undisputed master of dim sum and char sui returns!
Corporal Hart
Cortez's old sidekick. Who knows, if she hadn't caught one in the kisser back in TimeSplitters 2 she might still be around, Oh, I see, you've completed the story game so the TimeSplitters never existed and she didn't die. Well, how come there's a selectable TimeSplitter character then?
Doctor Amy
The only way you'll get Amy out of her regulation leggings is to wave a designer outfit in front of her.
Elite Henchwoman
Black rubber mini-dresses--Khallos is a genius.
Henchwoman
The henchwomen asked Khallos for some concessions to Woman’s Lib in the workplace like maybe a Sisterhood of Ultra Science. So he burnt their brassieres and got them some mini-dresses--he's very progressive.
Inceptress
Cloned from genetic samples taken from catwalk models, the Inceptress are trained to kill and looked damn good while they’re about it. They are naturally bald and Crow likes nothing better than to caress their smooth domes.
Jo-Barf Creepy
Gag me with a spoon.
Jungle Queen
The Jungle Queen has taken to her new life in the Scottish Highlands like a true native. She has been amazing Captain Ash with her amazing talents for fly fishing and tossing the caber and he’s never had his bagpipes played quite like that before. Och-aye the noo!
Kitten Celeste
Sometimes things get a little too hot under the collar for Harry and he needs some manual assistance from his slinky sidekick, Miss Celeste. Go get 'em tiger! Grrrrrrr!
Kyrpiss
The experts are still out on this one.
Lieutenant Black
At the interview, Miss Black said she would happily give her right arm to work in UltraNet - Crow took her up on the offer and then went one better.
Lieutenant Christine Malone
Lt. Malone's impeccable arrest record is enough to make her chest swell with pride.
Maiden
Two years have gone by and she's still innocent and pure--I've no idea how she manages it.
Mischief
If she asks you round to the back of the coconut shy to pull some salt water taffy-just say no.
Neophyte Constance
Constance spends most of her expense budget on hairspray.
Nurse Gulag
Always a popular choice for flu jabs and yearly medicals amongst the Brotherhood of Ultra Science. Nurse Gulag is well respected for her strict, if somewhat unconventional examination techniques.
Sister Faith
It took six months before Sister Faith could convince the other U-Genix scientists that girls liked pulling the legs off spiders too. Six months, and a whole lot of spiders.
Venus Starr
Venus always keeps her shooters loaded and ready for action.
Viola
"CENSORED"
Warrant Officer Keely
Warrant Officer Keely is in charge of the safe where the keys to the castle cellars are kept-she's a very popular lady.
Edwina
She's more dangerous than she looks.
Arial DaVinci
Balsa wood, PVA adhesive, twine and too much spare time.
