Ellen Sung, narrator of the 1992 young adult novel Finding My Voice, marches into the office of her gymnastics coach and declares she's quitting the team. Why? She's tired of the racist epithets her Iron Range teammates keep taunting her with.

"I'm sure they don't mean it," Ellen's coach says, putting an arm around the girl's shoulder. "You know how kids can be mean to each other. Don't take it personally."

That book, with its account of an Asian American character being gently gaslit, was "the first teen novel released by a major publisher with a contemporary Asian American protagonist by an Asian American author," wrote literary historian Gabrielle Moss. It drew on the then fairly recent experiences of its writer (above, right), who grew up in Hibbing as the child of Korean immigrants.

Marie Myung-Ok Lee went on to an illustrious career as a writer and teacher. She's also been one of the few American writers to have visited North Korea in recent decades. Her most recent book, a novel written for adults and titled The Evening Hero, returns to the Northland to explore the journey of a character who is in some (though not all) respects similar to the author's father.

Lee will be at Greysolon Ballroom on Sunday for an appearance in association with the Duluth Library Foundation's Olga Walker Awards. Reached by phone last week at her home in New York City, Lee talked about her life and her work — including her next book.

Just realized in dms with a friend that Hero is Back SWK/Dasheng wears bright red lipstick as part of his war paint.

This is the face of a man who 100% has teasingly kissed an opponent solely to leave a big obvious red lipstick mark on their face ala Bugs Bunny. Now his opponent gotta face his homies looking like he got caught in a makeup testing room.

I feel like he saves that particular move for special opponents.

I got bit by the succession OC bug and I couldn’t stop thinking abt how insane it was that Stewy almost had a daughter in the script, and then I was like….what if he did….have a daughter. Then I went blind and passed out and woke up and she was in my tablet.

Her name is Iasmim “Mim” Cardoso and she’s the product of a summer fling in Portugal w the daughter of an Angolan politician/oil profiteer. They have a polite non-relationship where Mim lives w her mom (she doesn’t. She’s shipped off to some Swiss Catholic all girls school) and in exchange for his minimal involvement she spends her summers w “dad”. It’s all very non involved. If the lack of his last name doesn’t make that apparent.

She’s an utterly rancid girl who doesn’t strive for much at all or wishes prove anything, and is content w immediate pleasures. Her hobbies are sucking fucking and seething. But she mostly keeps to herself. Her relationship w stewy is impersonal and polite but completely strained. He’s so upfrontly non parental she doesn’t feel like it’s worth hating him for it. She DOES blame him for her features are too big for her face, she hates him for that, making her uglier than she could be.. She never bothers for plastic surgery, the hate is fufilling. She has a clit piercing.

Had a hilarious idea regarding a possible interaction/dynamic in my Hero is Back fic;

Erlang Shen comes down to earth to figure out; Why Sun Wukong isn't in his prison? And why was a manifestation of Primordial Chaos/Hundun smashing around just now? Did the Golden Cicada just die??

However when he gets to earth he sees:

Sun Wukong in a weakened state, holding a newborn half-demon/celestial (as per my hc of Silly Girl being not-human) with dark hair to his chest.

Erlang: (*all three eyes blinking with shock*) Dasheng, realising what it looks like: "She's not yours A-Jian." Erlang, unable to control volume: "THEN WHO IS!?!" Dasheng, covering the baby's ears: "Probably someone who wouldn't capture me and allow me to be tossed in Laozi's Furnace!" Zhu Bajie, jaw-dropped: "Sweet Buddha! You [pointing at Dasheng] and the Emperor's nephew-" Dasheng, flushed: "Shut up." Liuer, still injured and semi-lucid: "Why is the god Erlang here??"

Things gets cleared up once Liuer wakes up from his recovery, and explains how he found and accidentally released "Dasheng" whilst running from baby-stealing yaoguai.

Erlang refuses to answer his initial reaction to seeing Silly Girl in his former rival's/"it's complicated" arms.

Then when everyone gets to Flower Fruit Mountain and meet "Zhanshi"/Liu'er Mihou...

And the three-eyed god meets up with another ex...

Erlang ain't getting away from a pair of angry, mischievous kissing monkeys.

Zhanshi, resting Silly Girl on her lap: "Did A-Jian seriously believe the baby was his?" Dasheng: "And mine. He must have believed I survived the Furnace and my imprisonment while with cub." Zhanshi, giggles: "I wonder how his brain tried to rationalise seeing the little Monk." Dasheng, teasing smile: "He probably thought he was yours." Both monkeys: (*laughing*) Erlang, sitting nearby with Liuer: (*blushing with furious embarrassment*) Liuer: (*blissfully unaware of the convo. is too busy petting Xiaotian Quan*)

So now Liuer, Silly Girl, and the future cubs, have another accidental parental figure - and this one comes with a dog!

Then again, some details are dependent on if Erlang is still a god; as the video game DLC depicts him falling from Heaven after a post-Furnace rematch with Dasheng. Similar to how the film depicted Zhu Bajie did before he reincarnated as a pig.

Erlang might be a werewolf-esque canine demon running around the mortal realm, calling himself Yang Jian as he did as when he was human.
