Oli jumps backwards onto the railing of the balcony, his wings sweeping majestically on either side of him, rainbow feathers rippling with the movement. He starts pulling Joel up beside him, "what's a bad idea, Joel?"
Joel's vice grip on his hands only tightens as he pulls him up. He's trembling, looking down over the edge, (a rookie mistake), and stammers, "j-jumping off, Oli, I don't know if I'm ready-"
"Joel, we've been waiting a week for this!" he answers, "why, just last night you said you were ready to try, and now your wings are well and truly ready."
He wags a finger in Joel's face, "You even pinky swore."
"Well, I did, but-" Joel looks over the edge again, his hands shaking in time with the flickering of his antenna, "Oli, I really don't-"
Oli reaches up, catching Joel's chin in his hand, "hey, look at me."
He guides his face back- makes Joel meet his eyes.
Joel's breath catches. He looks as if he's going to cry. "What if I fall?"
"Oh, Joel," the tip of Oli's wings come to rest on Joel's shoulders, not quite a hug but close. He leans in, brushing tears away with his thumb, his smile bright and soft as midmorning sunlight, "what if you fly?"
