The extreme policy positions and toxicity of Project 2025 — the Heritage Foundation’s initiative to provide policy and personnel to the next Trump administration — have prompted leader Paul Dans to resign from his position at the Heritage Foundation and former President Donald Trump to publicly disavow the effort. (Heritage's president has said that Trump trying to create distance from Project 2025 is a “political tactical decision” and that Heritage still has a “very good” relationship with Trump and his team.) Fox News has maintained that Trump was not aware of Project 2025 and attempted to distance Trump from its extremism. But the pro-Trump network’s personalities have repeatedly signaled support for many of Project 2025’s proposals.

Personnel and staffing

Project 2025’s plan to staff the next Trump administration involves potentially firing thousands of nonpartisan federal civil service workers — what MAGA figures usually refer to as the “deep state” — and replacing them with Trump loyalists. This would be accomplished by reinstituting a Trump-era executive order called “Schedule F,” which would reclassify civil service employees as “at-will” workers who can be more easily fired. And Project 2025 has already created a training academy to instruct potential staffers on “rolling back destructive policy and advancing conservative ideas in the federal government.” 

Christian nationalism

In the foreword to the effort’s policy book, Mandate for Leadership, Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts warned that “the Left is threatening the tax-exempt status of churches and charities that reject woke progressivism,” adding that “they will soon turn to Christian schools and clubs with the same totalitarian intent.”

To rectify this threat, Project 2025 offers, as Salon has written, a “blueprint for the Christian nationalist vision for America.”In the chapter on the Department of Labor, former Trump official Jonathan Berry cited the “Judeo-Christian tradition” to justify calling for overtime pay on the Sabbath.

In the chapter on the Department of Health and Human Services, former Trump HHS official Roger Severino criticized the Centers for Disease Control for issuing health guidelines warning against congregating at churches during the COVID-19 pandemic.

He asked, “How much risk mitigation is worth the price of shutting down churches on the holiest day of the Christian calendar and far beyond as happened in 2020? What is the proper balance of lives saved versus souls saved?”He also argued that future conservative administrations should “maintain a biblically based, social science-reinforced definition of marriage and family.”

LGBTQ rights

Project 2025 will have a major impact on LGBTQ students and teachers in public school systems.

The Heritage Foundation’s Lindsey Burke wrote that the next conservative administration should “take particular note of how radical gender ideology is having a devastating effect on school-aged children today” and warned of a supposed intent to “drive a wedge between parents and children.”Project 2025 claims that concepts such as gender ideology “poison our children, who are being taught … to deny the very creatureliness that inheres in being human and consists in accepting the givenness of our nature as men or women.”

Burke also called for legislation to force “K–12 districts under federal jurisdiction” to prohibit employees from using a name or pronoun different from the information listed on a student’s birth certificate without written guardian permission.

Project 2025 additionally targets trans athletes in schools, citing “bureaucrats at the Department of Justice” who “force school districts to undermine girls’ sports and parents’ rights to satisfy transgender extremists.” The plan says the federal government should instead “define ‘sex’ under Title IX to mean only biological sex recognized at birth.”Additionally, in the foreword, Kevin Roberts calls gender-affirming care “child abuse.”

Diversity, equity, and inclusion

Project 2025’s Mandate for Leadership proposes the removal of “DEI” references from “every federal rule, agency regulation, contract, grant, regulation, and piece of legislation that exists,” claiming that such efforts undermine the purpose of these agencies. The proposal also calls for the investigation and prosecution of supposed discrimination brought on by DEI policies.Fox News has been vocal in the anti-DEI crusade as well, pushing many of the same talking points found in Mandate, including that DEI and pro-LGBTQ policies are a detriment to the U.S. Army’s effectiveness and that DEI policies constitute discrimination:

Oh, there is some discourse about Oscar Isaac playing the mk system because he is not jewish. I have no say in the matter as I am not jewish, so I thought I'd ask

Oh! Okay! I'm willing to bed you are the same anon that sent this ask? Or maybe not and just someone with similar questions.

Well, Moon Knight came out over two years ago now. So most of the discourse over it is pretty old news at this point. If it is starting up again, it's just beating a dead horse. Or maybe there are new fans that are just blazing their own trail and not checking out that neat trail that's already been blazed.

Either way, I'm not upset about it. Learning is learning and I'm here for questions.

SO! Let's get into it!

Now, this may surprise a few of you… But I'm not Oscar Isaac. I know… I know… A real let down. This means that I can't speak on his behalf and everything I say is what I have picked up, and could be wrong.

As far as I am aware, he is not a practicing Jew. Meaning, he probably doesn't go to Shul or keep the Sabbath. He might! I don't know. I also don't know if he's Catholic or Christian or how he was raised or what his current belief system is… If it is on Wiki somewhere, I still can't say I know because how do you Wiki someone's personal religious beliefs?

What I DO know… He has Jewish Ancestry!

These quotes are taken from two interviews that are easily looked up on Google:

When asked how he felt about playing an Orthodox Jewish man for "Inside Llewyn Davis" (not his first or last Jewish role), here was his responce:

“We could play that game: How Jewish are you?” he said to interviewer Alexis Soloski, who is Jewish. “It is part of my family, part of my life. I feel the responsibility to not feel like a phony. That’s the responsibility, to feel like I can say these things, do these things and feel like I’m doing it honestly and truthfully."

Isaac referenced the fact that he has some Jewish heritage on his father’s side.

Of his roots, Oscar said, “My grandfather was French in Guatemala and my father is Cuban but he grew up in the States as well. I came to the States when I was five months old and I grew up my entire life mostly in Miami, between Miami and New York.” He is the third Oscar in the family. “My father and my grandfather were both named Oscar,” he revealed. “I am the third Oscar. It’s from the Academy Awards. Isaac is Jewish from my father side. I am definitely a big mix of many things.”

Now, I COULD get into semantics. His Jewish ancestry comes from his father's side and there is discourse in the Jewish system on Patrilineal vs. Matrilineal and what makes a Jew a Jew. I'm not going to get into that because it has WAY more involved than I'm willing to get into and that is probably why Oscar asked the "How Jewish are you?" question (He's known to be cheeky and that could be taken as a very cheeky question).

In MY books, If you have Jewish ancestry and you acknowledge it and consider it a part of you, then you are worthy of playing all the Jewish people you want in movies/shows/plays. ....As long as you are respectful and do your best to do it right.

And that is what I love about Oscar. He WANTS to get it right. He wants to honor the parts he plays and he understands when he has an important part that needs to be done right and with care.

Now, Oscar doesn't have DID (as far as I am aware), but he did the research and connected with people that Do have DID to make sure he offered a fare and honest and respectful tribute to it. Is it going to fit everyone with DID's shoes? No. But it is a very multi(LOL) colored disorder that presents in many different ways and because it is a Show meant to be visual to an audience that doesn't understand how it works, of course he's going to have to play it up a bit and the editors and directors are going to have to add flourishes that don't always agree with everyone so that we, a visual and auditory audience, can see a representation of this disorder that we can understand.

You know what's fun about being Jewish? You don't have to see it or hear it to demonstrate someone is Jewish. I can watch almost any movie or show and go "That guy's Jewish." How do I know? I don't. But in my head, he's now a Jewish character and I'm connecting to him that way.

You know what they DID do in Moon Knight? Oscar wore a Star of David necklace. There was a mezuzah on Steven's door. Steven had a Shabbat table set up. Steven is a Vegan to avoid having to risk not eating Kosher.

(I see Shabbat candle, decorative Menorah, and a Kiddish cup. I really hope he moves those (should be two but we only see one, Maybe it's behind the other) candles before he lights them. His fire hazard apartment gives me anxiety. Let's just hope his Havdalah candle doesn't set the place ablaze).

They could have done more to show his casual Jewish life, but you don't need to. This is Steven Grant pretty much living a Jewish life. I'm not sure what people were expecting him to do? Dance the Horah and have Peyot? This is more than what Comics Moon Knight has done to show his Jewish side for a LONG time (minus some good runs in the OG run and Recent MacKay run).

Anyways, I'm not sure who did decide to toss in those little details, but I deeply appreciate them and love them for it. And I love that Oscar is aware of and acknowledges his heritage. Not only that, but that he strives to represent it in a truthful and honest way.

Anyways, I hope that answers your question... There's a lot I could get into, but others have honestly done it better ages ago.

Is Oscar a Jewish man? I don't know. Probably not? BUT... If he suddenly said "I'm Jewish" I'd welcome him to the tribe with open arms. I think he's earned a little Challah. He's certainly a Mensch in my book.

This is gonna be really long long read

Recently, my post with the paintings of Wilhelm Kotarbinski attracted a lot of attention from a couple of individuals. In this post, I share paintings for The Sims 4. 41 paintings that represent Kotarbinski's work in different periods of his life, on various motives. Against the background of my other publications, this is a rather unpopular post with a small number of likes and reposts (big respect to those who do this). This post is practically invisible by the standards of Tumblr and especially the Internet.

But it is noticeable for certain individuals who came under this post not for sims or even pictures. They appeared to restore justice and correct me, although I would rather call it bullying and humiliation of the national dignity not only of me, but of the entire Ukrainian people. But I don't want to play the victim. I just want to refute these arguments in a good way.

Take 1 – Kotarbinski is a Polish artist. Calling him Ukrainian means appropriating Polish heritage.

A lot of confusion arises when we talk about the past - the times of the existence of empires, when most modern countries (in this context, European ones) were under the oppression of metropolises. For some reason, a certain number of people still think in these categories, dividing countries into "newer" and "older". The purpose of such distribution is simple – to diminish the importance of the mentioned country. But we will gradually return to this issue.

But there is another, less obvious reason why it is difficult to talk about people of the past. Centuries ago, people did not think the way we do today - I am a citizen of this country, and therefore I carry its culture. Before the First World War, people preferred to identify themselves with a certain social class, a certain stream of like-minded people, a type of employment or religious denominations. They were subjects of their states, members of their noble and not so noble families, were Christians, Jews or representatives of other denominations, and only then representatives of some country or nation. And if the things created by people themselves do not give us a hint of their own position, our own thoughts are only speculations.

For example, let's take the artist Taras Shevchenko. He was a subject of the Russian Empire, which he hated, his work and life took place in Ukraine, he was Ukrainian by birth and wrote in Ukrainian, criticizing the government. There are no questions about his nationality and self-identification.

How about, for example, the artist Vasyl Tropinin? Tropinin was born in the Novgorod province, the territory of russia. He was of russian origin, studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts and lived most of his life in russia. At the art academy where I studied, among the various art history courses, we had a separate subject on the history of 'russian art'. The art of no other country or period was defined as a separate subject. Except for russian (which somehow miraculously had a special status). But surprisingly, Tropinin did not appear in this subject as a russian artist. He was considered in the context of the history of Ukrainian art as an artist who represented the Ukrainian culture of the first half of the 19th century. Tropinin himself spoke about his work as follows:

Again, notice - I do not indicate that he was considered Ukrainian by origin. It was his work that was defined as Ukrainian, and therefore he himself is defined as a Ukrainian artist in the scientific studies of art critics based on the nature of his works. He owns many portraits depicting the Ukrainians of Podillia and their national clothes, emphasizing the diversity of Ukrainian culture. We can say that Tropinin is a russian by nationality, who has a Ukrainian period of his art.

Speaking of this, I would rather pay attention to such a Ukrainian artist as Ilya Repin (real name - Ilya Ripa), Ukrainian artist of Armenian origin Ivan Ayvazovsky (real name - Hovhannes Ayvazyan) or composer of Ukrainian origin Pyotr Tchaikovsky ( real name is Petro Chayka). At this moment, you will most likely raise an eyebrow and distrust what you read, because all your life you have heard that these are Russian artists. But they are russian only because of the imperial hand of the russian empire, which represented the culture of the captured territories as its own cultural diversity.

Moreover, playing along with the empire and pandering to its colonial policy was the only way to "break out into the high society" and become something more than an ordinary peasant from the colony. For this, you had to do a few simple steps: to give up one's cultural identity, speak russian, and change a difficult (by russian standards) surname to one that is easier for russian to pronounce. That is why I added their real names in parentheses.

What does Wikipedia tell us?

Ukrainian-born, but still Russian. After all, I cannot deny the simple fact that their work, their life and fame really have a very close connection with Russia, at least because they were its citizens. In Tchaikovsky, you will find many works inspired by Russian culture, such as the operas Oprychnyk, Yevgeniy Onegin, The Queen of Spades, etc. The Cossack origin did not prevent the composer from distorting the image of the Ukrainian hetman Ivan Mazepa in the opera of the same name. The image, which in contrast to the Russians, who historically perceived Mazepa as a traitor, had an epic and romantic image in the works of European artists (in the works of Lord Byron, for example).

Ukrainian motifs prevail in Ilya Repin's work. His most famous works depict the Cossacks and the Ukrainian countryside, but he himself, despite his descent from the Cossack family and great love for his native land, identified himself as a russian, separating himself from the 'little russians'.

After this lengthy passage, in which I prove that often the origin does not say much about the affiliation of the artist, we can return to so much suffered Kotarbinski. Wilhelm Kotarbinski was born in Neborów, in the central region of Poland. The boy was interested in drawing from childhood, so after entering the Warsaw gymnasium, he additionally attended drawing courses. While studying in Warsaw, young Kotarbinski fell in love with a cousin - a relationship that the family could not allow, and therefore gave the girl in marriage to someone else. Shocked by this, Kotarbinski decided to leave Warsaw and go to Rome. Kotarbinski lived in Italy for 15 years, where during this time he managed to graduate with a silver medal from the Art Academy of St. Luke.

The joke about the fact that Kotarbinski studied and lived in Italy, but for some reason is not considered an Italian artist, looks a bit lame. As Viktoriya Sukovata points out in the study "Wilhelm Kotarbinski, the forgotten genius of Ukrainian Modern", being a Pole, Kotarbinski received an academic base in Rome, and therefore to some extent he can be called a representative of the Italian art school.

Roman Orgy

In 1888, Kotarbinski returned to Warsaw, where he was able to marry his already widowed cousin, although over time he realized that this marriage did not bring him the desired joy. So at the invitation of his old friends from the Roman period, the Svedomskyi brothers - russian artists - Kotarbinski moved to Kyiv. Here he actively took part at exhibitions, being one of the most active Kyiv artists.

Imitating the organizational forms of The Itinerants (association of artists of the russian empire, including Ukrainian artists), in May 1893 Wilhelm Kotarbinski, together with Vladyslav Galimsky and other artists, appealed to the authorities with an official request to approve the charter of the Kyiv Society of Art Exhibitions. In 1897, he became a member of the Kyiv Society of Antiquities and Arts, which was reformed from the Society for the Promotion of Arts. It can be said that the Kyiv cultural environment was not alien to the Polish artist at all, and he actively contributed to his work with his creativity and social activities.

If you are a little familiar with the history of art, you will notice that Kotarbinski's works, with their Ancient and Oriental motifs and chosen themes, is very reminiscent of the works of representatives of mid-19th-century academicism, Lawrence Alma-Tadema and Henryk Siemiradzki. However, as Viktoriya Sukovata points out in her already mentioned article, this perception is a bit wrong, since Kotarbinski was working at the end of the century. Instead of the romantic interpretation and fascination with the past, inherent in the middle of the last century, Kotarbinski perceived exotic Orientalism through the prism of the decadent present, on which was superimposed the mystical aesthetics picked up by Kotarbinski from the cultures of Eastern Europe.

This mysticism is particularly visible in his erotic female images. According to the researcher, they are inspired by such currents of European modernism as Jugendstil and Vienna Secession, which enriched his Italian academic base with "bright decorativeness, sophisticated plots and symbolism." It was during this second Polish and Kyiv period that Kotarbinski painted many canvases depicting creatures from Slavic mythology. Numerous mavkas, mermaids, female spirits of nature, ghosts and other creatures are permanent characters in his works.

It is also worth mentioning the fact that, in addition to easel works, Kotarbinski had extensive experience in painting churches. He painted Orthodox and Catholic churches in Ukraine and Belarus, the most famous of which is the Volodymyr Cathedral in Kyiv, as well as the Church of St. Nicholas in Radomysl (Zhytomyr Region, Ukraine), the Cathedral of Tree Anastasias in Glukhiv (Sumy Region, Ukraine), etc.

This, in turn, could not help but leave an imprint on Kotarbinski's work. In Orthodoxy, the temple is the embodiment of God's house on earth and a semblance of paradise for Christians. Its inner space should remind the believer of his purpose and life path, in which he is accompanied by saints, martyrs, archangels and other forces of the heavenly host. Kotarbinski worked on the frescoes of the church under the supervision of Sviedomskyi, because as a Catholic, he could not be allowed to independently paint an Orthodox church. Perhaps that is why, in this period of Kotarbinsky's work, in addition to nymphs, he also depicts numerous angels of death, drowning women or paintings with the leading motif of death, full of the same aesthetic mysticism, but in different context.

"Stop. What all this does with the aesthetics of mysticism ?" - you ask. This is about my answer to not so respected person that the environment has a considerable influence on the creativity of any artist:

Do you really believe that after living in another country for more than 30 years, you can remain completely untouched by the local culture? But in the eyes of someone, I am the thief here for calling Kotarbinski a Ukrainian artist for his conscious choice to incorporate local motifs into his works. However, his most significant role for Ukrainian art is bringing the style and themes of European art of that time to Ukrainian. Viktoriya Sukovata writes about this in the already mentioned work:

Returning to the question itself - whether Kotarbinski can be called a Ukrainian artist based on the nature of his creative heritage, I believe that there is every reason for this. Firstly, Wilhelm Kotarbinski spent a significant part of his life in Kyiv, surrounded by its artistic life, in which he actively participated. He not only enriched Ukrainian culture with European modern trends, but also borrowed local motifs in his work, creating his mystical worlds full of mythical creatures.

Take 2 – Kotarbinski could not be a Ukrainian artist, because Ukraine did not exist.

Here I'd like to address both disreputable individuals who repeated this slogan twice in different variations:

Here I would like to introduce my Polish not-friends to one russian under my post, dated October 31, 2023. This was a post in which I adapted for The Sims 4 novel "Vyi" by the writer Mykola Gogol, calling him Ukrainian because of him (you won't believe) being a Ukrainian.

I will not raise a historical polemic about who owns which lands and when which state arose. After all, in such a case, it is possible to reach extremes, in which Ireland never existed without Britain, and Poland without the soviet union. Doesn't sound very nice, does it? But the imperial past of Poland and russia still allows certain individuals to draw this trump card and throw it in the face of Ukrainians, whose separate country really did not exist for a long time precisely because of them. But for some reason they don't like to mention it. Currently, Ukrainians are going through a difficult stage of self-identification, collecting parts of our culture, scattered by empires over the centuries, barbarically looted and erased from the face of the earth. A very convenient position is to ban culture and language, erase at least a hint of its existence and appropriate it, and then declare that neither such a nation nor its "poor culture" exists.

I want to add only one thing: Kyiv has always been Ukrainian, and no barbaric capture by another state for over 10 centuries made it either the cradle of some imaginary civilization, or the mother of distant and foreign cities for us.

I wrote "Polish-Ukrainian" artist precisely because Kotarbinski was an important part of Ukrainian cultural life of the beginning of the 20th century; precisely because that is how it is defined by the art history scientific community, and not my personal whim. It is thanks to him that the St. Volodymyr Cathedral has its majestic interior full of mystical awe, the house of the Khanenkos is filled with exotic panels with Oriental motifs, and Ukrainian museums preserve rare easel works of the artist, which embody the tragic uncertainty of the future, so characteristic of all European art of this era.

Unlike the Ukrainian works in the Tretyakov Gallery in St. Petersburg, Kotarbinski's works were not stolen, illegally exported, or shamelessly appropriated under the guise of "evacuation" or forced restoration. Kotarbinski spent the last years of his life in Kyiv. Against the background of the First World War, his fate was not the best. He died poor and forgotten, unable to return to his homeland in Poland. Today, his works are kept in museums in Warsaw, st. petersburg, Ukrainian Kyiv and Sumy. His work is examined from the perspective of all three countries with which he was in contact, and the scientist of each of the countries will emphasize those aspects of his work that are related to this country. But for God's sake, no one tries to steal from a dead person, unless you're into strange practices.

What to do to see Ukrainian culture?

For example, to begin with, open your eyes. This can be especially difficult if you're a prejudiced chauvinist, but it's worth a try. Next, as the fastest solution, I can offer you the blog @vintage-ukraine, where works of Ukrainian fine art, films, famous Ukrainian cultural figures, historical photos, musical works, etc. are published every day. As a next step, I can recommend the Культуртригер channel, in which the authors talk about Ukrainian fine art and refute imperial narratives about Ukrainian art that have been cultivated for centuries. This channel is in Ukrainian, but it seems quite similar and easy to understand for Russian and Polish speakers, so I think you won't have any problems with it. According to the same principle, I can recommend the Ukrainian-language literary channel Твоя Підпільна Гуманітарка, where authors research and talk about Ukrainian literature, language and mythology in an accessible form.

NAME LORE! Specifically the District 2 naming that I’ve already created, but have expanded upon. Keep in mind, this District 2 name system is exclusive to those in the masonry related trade, not Peacekeepers. It’s called a “Home Name,” a name given to you by the various and small masonry communities of the District. Originally it wasn’t a thing since most of those in the district already had names related to the trade, but with the heavy influence of the Capitol and adopting Capitol sounding names, most having Greco-Roman influences, the people of District 2 continued to sustain the Capitol’s favor. It wasn’t until after the war with the influx of Peacekeepers and District 2 becoming the military center of Panem that masonry families and their children felt the shift in their naming heritage in relation to their trade. Thus the creation and at first underground program of a “Home Name” was born. Children born in District 2 would continue to be incentivized to have Capitol or warrior like names, but those would not be the ones used in home. On official documentation, like on a reaping slip or on the roster in the training academy, they would have their actual names (called a Slip Name referencing the reaping slip). The process of creating a Home Name is long and arduous, taking up to two to three years to finalize a handful of names and ultimately choosing one that both fits the babe and reflects their trade. Names can be repeated, names can be changed, Capitol-like first names can be axed all together once they’re past reaping age or not a Peacekeeper in a 20 year contract, but as long as they still hold onto to their trade and call it, there’s no problem at all. As this tradition is not set in stone, various families have their own rules to when and if their children can change their Home Name, with some being as lax as letting them change it whenever the child pleases, to after reaping age, to not at all. If you marry into a masonry family and have no Home Name of your own, you have weeks with your future in-laws to not only get to know each other, but so they can have an outside perspective on deciding the new Home Name. Your partner who knows you best will present the final handful of names, their meaning and bring any tools or stones that align with that name if there are any, and once that name is decided, you’re sprinkled with marble dust on your forehead from a patch of rubble and are called that until your last day, intermixing your old name if you so wish (I showed this to a friend of mine & she said that the sprinkling dust on the forehead gave her christianity vibe. I can't out-run my religious trauma even if I tried). Children also go through the same process, and the case of the Sophro children (OCs) are no exception. The three of them spent the first two or three years of their lives in District 2 to give them a proper Home Name that truly reflected the District and themselves. They take great pride in their Home Name and use it the second they leave the Capitol. Most of the children of 2 that they grew up with didn’t even realize that they’re Capitol until much later and recognized them on TV, using their Slip Names. And yes, there is an assignment done in school in 2 where those who have Home Names pair up with those who don’t, spend the week at their home in the masonry sector where the families there can get to know them and finalize a name. At the end of the week they are given a Home Name by that partner and can use it when they are in the stone working section of the district. I think Enobaria totally has a Home Name (Caliper?). Brutus is for sure the kind to have to follow a masonry kid around for a week.

The Kiev regime tends to view its common religious heritage with Russia as exclusively Ukrainian and sells to the West invaluable Christian artifacts, religion expert Roman Lunkin told Sputnik.

Historical and cultural artifacts, including Orthodox icons, are taken out of Ukraine and transferred to Western countries where some of them are sold, according to Roman Lunkin, head of the Center for the Study of Religion and Society of the Institute of Europe at the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS).

"It is not rational and not at all ethical to treat the heritage this way," Lunkin told Sputnik.

Last year, the rarest 6th and 7th-century Byzantine icons were secretly transferred from the territory of Ukraine to France under the pretext of safety issues, and then displayed at the Louvre Museum in Paris. All in all,16 invaluable artifacts were brought to France through Poland and Germany.

Still, the crux of the matter is that these Christian Orthodox icons were gifted to the head of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem by the Sinai Monastery of St. Catherine in the mid-19th century, according to Bishop Porfiry, a Russian theologian and byzantinologist.

In 1940, the Soviet government transferred the icons to the Kiev Museum of Western and Oriental Art (now known as the Khanenko Museum of Art), where they were kept after the Great Patriotic War. It is unclear whether and when the icons will be returned.

Anyway I think James chooses to be a Shadowhunter because he likes protecting people, he likes the sense of purpose, he likes using the skills he has and things he loves (e.g. jumping on rooftops) to protect everyone (mundanes included) he sees as equally valuable (and this is a lot of my reason for choosing Christianity, too, the religion I was raised with as James was raised among shadowhunters and there are so many parallels between the clave and the church but this isn't the post for that). And I think he would embrace doing so as both a warlock and shadowhunter if he'd thought of it, and maybe once he unpacks some of his trauma and internalised shadowhunter supremacy from the academy days (I don't think he really believes shadowhunters to be superior). But I think Tessa needs to work through that as well and if she were to model it when he was younger, James would be more in with owning exactly who he is! (and we would have a whole lot less of the tlh drama).

Anyway, he's only 17 (18 in the epilogue) when we leave them so he's still got time! Perhaps he plays some role in the whole Tessa joining the spiral labyrinth thing as she sees her adult child more embrace that side of their family (again, parallels with neurodivergence in my fam).

As for powers, they lose their ones that are linked to Belial. Most warlocks don't have powers linked specifically to their demon parent, and we know Tessa still has powers after Belial dies. There's no reason to think her kids might not have their own, albeit weakened by being half shadowhunter, powers we don't know about yet. We only discovered Lucie's powers during COG when she was 16. Even Jem is skeptical of them just being ordinary shadowhunters now. Genetics don't work like that, and I see them as having kinda watered down warlock skills applied to being shadowhunters: maybe a bit of magic in their runes (would explain how Math survived Edom), maybe a bit of healing magic or something and maybe they live slightly longer being half immortal and all, idk! Happy 90th birthday to filmmaker Roman Polanski! Polanski was born Raymond Roman Thierry Liebling on August 18, 1933 in Paris, France. His Polish Jewish parents moved the family from his birthplace in Paris back to Kraków in 1937. Two years later, the invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany started World War II, and the family found themselves trapped in the Kraków Ghetto. After his mother and father were taken in raids, Polanski spent his formative years in foster homes, surviving the Holocaust by adopting a false identity and concealing his Jewish heritage. Polanski's first feature-length film, Knife in the Water (1962), was made in Poland and was nominated for the United States Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. After living in France for a few years, he moved to the United Kingdom, where he directed his first three English-language feature-length films: Repulsion (1965), Cul-de-sac (1966), and The Fearless Vampire Killers (1967). In 1968, he moved to the United States and cemented his status in the film industry by directing the horror film Rosemary's Baby (1968). In 1969, Polanski's pregnant wife, actress Sharon Tate, was murdered with four friends by members of the Manson Family. He then made Macbeth (1971), What? (1972), Chinatown (1974) and The Tenant (1976). Polanski was arrested and charged in 1977 with drugging and raping a 13-year-old girl. As a result of a plea bargain, he pleaded guilty to the lesser offence of unlawful sex with a minor. In 1978, upon learning that the judge planned to reject his plea deal and impose a prison term instead of probation, Polanski fled to Paris and has since been a fugitive from the U.S. criminal justice system. After fleeing to Europe, Polanski continued directing. His other critically acclaimed films include Tess (1979), The Pianist (2002) which won him the Academy Award for Best Director, The Ghost Writer (2010), Venus in Fur (2013), and An Officer and a Spy (2019). His other notable directorial work include Pirates (1986), Frantic (1988), Bitter Moon (1992), Death and the Maiden (1994), The Ninth Gate (1999), Oliver Twist (2005), Carnage (2011), Based on a True Story (2017) and The Palace (2023). Aside from appearing numerous times in his own films, he has also appeared as an actor in the films The Magic Christian(1969), Blood for Dracula (1974), Back in the USSR (1992), The Revenge (2002) and Rush Hour 3 (2007). Earlier this year, nearly 1,000 supporters of “National Conservatism” gathered at the semicircular auditorium of the Emmanuel Centre, an elegant London meeting hall a couple of blocks south of Westminster Abbey, to hear from a range of scholars, commentators, politicians, and public servants. NatCon conferences, as they are often called, have been held in Italy, Belgium, and Florida and are broadly associated with what is increasingly called the “New Right.” In London, speakers denounced “woke politics,” blamed immigration for the rising cost of housing, and said modern ills could be solved with more religion and more (nonimmigrant) babies. The break room was lined with booths from organizations such as the Viktor Orbán–affiliated Danube Institute, the U.K.-based conservative think tank the Bow Group, the Heritage Foundation, and the legal powerhouse Alliance Defending Freedom, which is headquartered in Arizona but has expanded to include offices in nearly a half-dozen European cities. When I attended NatCon London in May, I heard a number of American accents in the crowd, and I was not surprised to see Michael Anton, a former national security official in the Trump administration and a senior fellow at the Claremont Institute, a right-wing think tank, on the lineup. These days, Anton and other key representatives of the Claremont Institute seem to be everywhere: onstage at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC); at the epicenter of Ron DeSantis’s “war on woke”; and on speed-dial with GOP allies including Josh Hawley, J.D. Vance, and Donald Trump.

Most of us are familiar with the theocrats of the religious right and the anti-government extremists, groups that overlap a bit but remain distinct. The Claremont Institute folks aren’t quite either of those things, and yet they’re both and more. In embodying a kind of nihilistic yearning to destroy modernity, they have become an indispensable part of right-wing America’s evolution toward authoritarianism. Extremism of the right-wing variety has always figured on the sidelines of American culture, and it has enjoyed a renaissance with the rise of social media. But Claremont represents something new in modern American politics: a group of people, not internet conspiracy freaks but credentialed and influential leaders, who are openly contemptuous of democracy. And they stand a reasonable chance of being seated at the highest levels of government—at the right hand of a President Trump or a President DeSantis, for example.

Founded in 1979 in the city of Claremont, California (but not associated in an official way with any of the five colleges there), the Claremont Institute provided enthusiastic support for Donald Trump in 2016. Individuals associated with Claremont now fund and help run the National Conservativism gatherings; Claremont Institute chairman and funder Thomas D. Klingenstein also funds the Edmund Burke Foundation, which has held those National Conservatism conferences across the globe. Claremont is deeply involved in DeSantis’s effort to remake Florida’s state universities in the model of Hillsdale College—a private, right-wing, conservative Christian academy in Michigan whose president, Larry Arnn, happens to be one of the institute’s founders and former presidents. Claremont honored DeSantis at an annual gala with its 2021 “Statesmanship Award,” and the governor returned the favor by organizing a discussion with a “brain trust” that included figures associated with the Claremont Institute. If either Trump or DeSantis becomes president in 2024, Claremont and its associates are likely to be integral to the “brain trust” of the new administration. Indeed, some of them are certain to become appointees in the administrative state that they wish (or so they say) to destroy.

The punch-Nazis posts always make me think of the time I started a riot in the third grade and the fact that I will never be sorry about it.

I have some recent Jewish heritage, but I was raised by and among white evangelicals. This put me in a weird position as a little girl with a long nose, deep-set hazel eyes, and dark, wavy-curly hair. In most situations, I read as just another white kid ... but anyone who was LOOKING for Jewish people would pick me out of a crowd quickly. (For proof of this, see my college's Chabad chapter and also every racist I've ever met.)

My grandfather on the non-Jewish side seemed more aware of this than most people, maybe because he was a WW2 vet. So one day when I was 8 or 9 years old, he sat me down with a book full of photos and explained to me what the Holocaust was. He told me that he needed me to do something for him: it would be my job to remember all this stuff for him, so that someday, when I was all grown up and people tried to tell me this hadn't happened, I could fight back even when he wasn't there to do it anymore. I was a very serious little kid and Grandpa didn't ask for much, so I agreed.

Not long after that, I was attending third grade at my not-NOT-a-segregation-academy Christian school when the PE teacher showed up to take us all to PE class. We dutifully lined up in the hallway, and as we started to follow the coach outside, he told us he had invented a fun new game called Concentration Camp.

Thanks to Grandpa, I was the only kid in the third grade who knew what those words meant.

To the credit of third-grade me, I didn't panic. I realized immediately that I had to run for my life, also realized that I couldn't just leave everyone else to die just because they had less useful grandpas than I did, and decided to save who I could. I grabbed the nearest non-white kid, rapidly whispered an explanation of what a concentration camp was, and tried to pull her away from the line of kids with me.

Unfortunately, I had overestimated my fellow third-grader. Instead of running, she stopped dead in the middle of the hallway and SCREAMED.

Even worse, she SCREAMED WHAT I HAD TOLD HER.

Other kids panicked. More screaming. Pandemonium erupted. We had made it halfway up the hallway, but we were still close to our classroom, so our third-grade teacher heard the blooming riot and came out to find out what the hell. She was about Grandpa's age, so when she heard the words "concentration camp" and saw the guilty look on the PE coach's face, she started tearing him a new orifice the way only an elderly church lady can do.

It turned out that Concentration Camp, the new game, was a modified form of dodgeball. The PE teacher had thought it would be funny to name a game after something no kid in a mostly white Christian elementary school in the 90s would know about. He hadn't counted on Granddad, or me.

My mother was called, and I got in a little trouble, but once my teacher realized I had genuinely thought people were going to die and had tried to save the nearest child rather than just running like hell, she stepped in with her church-lady voice and I was quietly let off the hook, except for a note in my office file that probably said something like "incorrigible shit-disturber".

I think about that incident whenever someone brings up the should-we-punch-Nazis thing. Maybe if more people agreed that Nazis deserved punching, that idiot PE teacher would have named his idiot dodgeball variant something else and I wouldn't have briefly convinced 24 third-graders that we were all about to be murdered.

Anyway, punch Nazis. Unless you're too short to reach them, in which case start a riot.

East Pasco Chamber Foundation Kicks off School Year by Giving Honors to 10 Student Citizens

The East Pasco Chamber Foundation in partnership with the Greater East Pasco Chamber of Commerce recognized ten students from local Zephyrhills schools. This ceremony marks 27 years of celebrating student citizenship in the Zephyrhills. The students were honored as the Greater East Pasco Student Citizen of the Month for September. The ceremony took place at Chick-fil-A in Zephyrhills on September 18 at 8:00 am. Students are chosen by the teachers and administration of their individual schools for exemplary effort,achievement and contribution to their school, family, and community. The students receiving honors were: Sarai Nieves (8th grade, Academy of Spectrum Diversity); Daralis Robles (1st grade, Children’s Educational Services Elementary Campus ); Jason Jarman (6th grade, Children’s Educational Services Secondary Campus); Jase Kitchen (5th grade, Chester W. Taylor Elementary School); Anna Gomez-Marzano (1st grade, Heritage Academy); Angel Cruz (6th grade, Raymond B.
