I love it when Snufkin destroys himself for Moomin I want to write a story like that

The current one I'm writing has a bit of that but they're established relationship and I want him to destroy himself

Can an author not just. Endlessly write self-destructive characters who would rather put themselves on the altar of sacrifice instead of admitting their feelings if they feel it would save their friend the trouble??

See 90s anime Snufkin is very positive about this mindset. He loves Moomintroll and that is enough for him. Moomintroll can go off and love others and Snufkin will just be happy to see Moomintroll is happy.

2019 Moominvalley Snufkin is a whole other beast. He's older and more insecure and presents a perfectly put together face in no small part due to just his suppressing a lot of that panic. He's still a chill dude, still very friendly and distant, but he's awkward. He's a teen in the prime of his panic.

Of course he ends up overreacting at points of course he's more actively afraid of going forgotten of course he's more emotionally constipated than should be healthy

When you've lived your life as a transient and are loved by a wonderful Moomintroll (who is also a teen, also awkward, also a mess of anxiety), of course you have trouble admitting the way you feel inside. One wrong move could shatter that tension and change is terrifying. (Change could mean disaster)

alright, I want to share some Moominvalley season 4 thoughts SPOILERS AHEAD

I don't want to go on a long rant, but, like many others, I was disappointed. Mostly since the writing felt off and a lot of character arcs felt completely abandoned (especially Moomintroll). And while I never truly believed they would make Snufkin and Moomintroll canon, I hoped they would continue with the same level of subtext as in previous seasons.

So believe me, I get the frustration - I'm right there with you. But I wish people would stop accusing Gutsy for queerbating and getting unreasonably angry at them for "ruining the show".

We have no idea what Gutsy or Moomin Co.'s true intentions were, but I refuse to believe they intentionally wanted to queerbate anyone. Probably Gutsy just weren't allowed to canonize the ship, if they wanted to, since it was never canon in the source material.

But does that matter?

Definitely there is a need for more explicitly queer media, but this is not that show. Here's a quote by Sarah Z on youtube, summing up my point perfectly:

"Why would some official stamp of canonization from an author hold more weight than the myriad connections audiences have made with the work?"

That snufmin didn't become canon in this adaptation doesn't make the queer reading of the pair any less valuable.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think Gutsy or Moomin Co. are exempt from criticism, but please be respectful and constructive when giving it. Or, use any of your creative skills to rewrite the parts of the show you didn't like - that's what I will do 😉

okay can i just say. in my opinion moominvalley season 4 was the worst season out of all of them, which really isn't the thing you wanna say about a final season...

the whole thing was so anti-climactic, like the whole thing with snufkin and joxter. in what world is it satisfying to not have them meet?? especially after having a whole build up for it as well??? if they're not gonna meet don't pretend like it. i'm expecting a memoires adaptation where they do meet now

this goes for the final episode again. it just felt like another filler episode, none of that tension that the original story (and even the movie) provided. it was not a satisfying conclusion to the story AT ALL.

and don't even get me STARTED on the relationships in this season.

more specifically whatever moomintroll and snorkmaiden have going on. why are they still together?? genuine question, and i don't mean that in a "break up so that snufmin can get together" way, i mean it in a "break up because they're both holding onto something that isn't working for either of them" way. it's been set up since season 1, when moomintroll is shown to care about his best friend more than his girlfriend and her then feeling neglected, and further in season 2 (or 3? i can't remember) with the whole metaphor with moomintroll holding snorkmaiden's paw too tightly which very clearly implies their relationship, based on other subtext.

and also snufmin?? i hate, genuinely hate, how there was just none of it, no mention or continuation of anything the other seasons have been building up to. it's as if we're back to season 1 again, except for the fact that snufkin and moomintroll are more comfortable with little touches and stuff like that. how is it that gutsy just decided to be basically done with it after the lonely mountains scene?? there's just none of that beautiful queer subtext that tove's stories contain

also this doesn't feel like an issue with them being gay, okay yes it does i take it back but gutsy were completely fine with making sniff fall in love with stinky in the midsummer meddling episode which. what the hell even was that. what the fuck gutsy

also where the hell was snufkin in this season?? he was in like 4 episodes which is kinda insane for such a major character😭

i think i'll end my rant here by saying that this season was incredibly disappointing and i'm fucking pissed about gutsy queerbaiting us

Hi, hello, here's my rant about Invisible Snufkin because Moomin has been the only thing on my mind and I have problems.

So I personally see the merit in it, especially after the 2019 series. In the most recent adaptation (which is so GOOD in my opinion), Snufkin seems to ride this line between having his space and straight up isolating himself. My main point of evidence for it is Season 1 episode 2, The Spring Tune. In this episode, Snufkin first acknowledges how alone he feels, and then states that he must be ill. This to me means that he's crossing from that place of solitude into something cold and lonely (same, Snufkin). The dream is probably the biggest point for me, as it straight up explains that he's scared of being forgotten. Throughout the entire series, this personal battle Snufkin has is hinted at. I mean, in The Invisible Child it's quite literally said that he's one of the lost souls during Too-Ticky's talk with Moomintroll (that scene STILL has me screaming). Someone can turn Invisible for a number of reasons. Ninny turned Invisible because she was made to feel that way, but I think if Snufkin were to canonically turn invisible, it'd be because of more personal struggles. I'd honestly love to see it at some point, I can just picture the change in relationship dynamics. If you read my rant, thanks! I just need to get it out because this has been the only thing in my brain.

Ok, so I'll share two unpopular opinions that I have in regards to the Moomin fandom in general, and more specifically, the 2019 animated series, Moominvalley.

One is that I really don't care about Snufmin. Yeah, you heard me right. No matter the place or adaptation, Snufkin and Moomintroll are always paired up with each other, and I don't care about their relationship. Heck, they're not even my favorite characters of the series, which will be my second point, but they're quite popular as a couple here or anywhere else. Although, it may be just me, but I'm a niche parasite. I'm very fond of side characters that are seen once and never again, the characters who do not even get referenced after they appear for a single frame. The Moomins have plenty of characters like this.

As for Snufmin, they're the opposite of their niche, which means I'm not concerned about the nature of their relationship. You can read the most recent posts on Tumblr to see what other people think of the lack of queer representation in Season 4, and here are my two cents: You guys, ladies, non-binaries and all the LGBT+ people deserve better than breadcrumbs, but a supper is rare when it comes to canonical queer relationships, so I understand how you feel when you're given nothing in return.

But this rant isn't about Snufmin, oh no. Because, you see, this is about one of my favorite Moomin characters... and it's not Sniff, but today, I'll talk about Mrs. Fillyjonk and one aspect of her character that was denied in Moominvalley: Her motherhood. Mrs. Fillyjonk doesn't have children in this adaptation. They are their nieces, they even wear different clothing as if to say "hey look at us! We are related to Mrs. Fillyjonk but we are not her kids! You thought we would be, but no!", which... I don't like this change. It feels like it was done to justify why Mrs. Fillyjonk was on her own, but by doing so, they took away one part of her character that made her such an interesting figure.

In the comics, Mrs. Fillyjonk is established as a juxtaposition of the Moomin's. She is a no-nonsense ferret lady whose children all wear the same clothing and spend most of their time on study. Meanwhile, Moomin and his friends have their own identities and are playing around the valley, and Mrs. Fillyjonk is so devoted to showing others how a life led by duty is discipline is better to the point it gets ridiculous, as in, if your way of life is so much better than the Moomin's, then why do you feel the need to impress them all the time? Are you, or your children, happier than they are by living this way?

Someone probably wrote an in-depth rant about Mrs. Fillyjonk's character and how she is a joke trying to be taken seriously, but hey, I like her. As for her children, they don't have their own characters, they're just mini-Fillyjonks who sometimes get to talk and they exist to show that Mrs. Fillyjonk, despite her strict behavior, cares for someone that isn’t just herself. One of my favorite moments of the 1990 anime is Mrs. Fillyjonk worried about where her children might be and they're just fine. 

That motherhood is gone from the 2019 adaptation, and now they're their nieces. And they barely interact with each other. I guess the nieces appear for, like, two episodes, and that's it? Sure, you still have the dutiful, organized, anxious, methodical Mrs. Fillyjonk, but to take away her children took away a piece of her character that I could relate to.

Heck, she isn’t even concerned about her nieces and their well-being during the Comet finale. They are simply gone, like Emma, like Ninny, like… Oh yeah, isn’t it odd that Ninny only appeared for one episode and then never again? She doesn’t even get to be casually mentioned like Snufkin borrowing a sun oil from a certain Fire Spirit… I could write about that moment as well, but I’ll leave it for later, there's been too much disappointment already.

DIRECTOR'S CUT! give me the rundown on Lemon Boy!

Oh god uhh. That is three whole chapters lol it's gonna be a bit long oof

Okay so like. The concept started from this Cavetown Album (called Lemon Boy, fittingly) and me singing Lemon Boy to myself one day and going, "huh. Apollo and Snufkin both fit this song. I should do something with that." (I pretty easily spiraled into shipping the two help)

I wanna be ten feet tall!! I wanna grow big red horns!! I wanna eat fire and snow!! And scare everyone!!

Uhh yeah go listen to Ten Feet Tall it's a good song. Very Apollo vibes.

(I love to write to music, if you couldn't tell. Sprinkling in the motifs or imagery of them is like my fave thing to do it's so much fun.)

It is very important to me that you understand that Apollo's love language is to shove. This is my headcanon and I will go to the grave pushing this agenda. XD

The concept of Apollo tracking down one of his old foster caretakers was actually something I came up with while jamming out a different story with Tega. It was a nice little heartbreaking thing to include in Apollo's backstory and so I put it here. Shit's fucked, my boy, I'm sorry.

(Maple and Ginger were purely named for food. Also lesbian couple because idk I will also die on this hill that Apollo is gay and had a lot of gay in his life.)

I am pushing an Agenda and y'all will have to live with it. XD

But for real, I just like the concept of a young Snufkin, not really knowing any other way to console his friend, kissing him first and explaining it after. Snufkin and Apollo can understand each other in a way not a lot of the other kids around them could, so of course they'd also have a bit of a different relationship than those others.

This was also a good setup for the final chapter but it's really the entire reason I wrote this fic, I wanted this scene where Snufkin kisses Apollo and then Apollo pays it forward later in his life.

so uh I wrote the Clay chapter *after* finishing the first and last chapters!! I was originally just not gonna include a Clay segment (he was giving me too much trouble), but then I had a burst of inspiration and slammed it out so hey Clay gets to be in this lol.

Also furthering my Apollo will bite agenda. I love the idea of Apollo not actually getting bullied because he fought back, but getting ignored and avoided actually because, again, he fought back. I think it fits his character pretty well to have that in his background, considering how desperate he is for validation.

Clay is also weird to me. Like, he's such a blank slate for characterisation that I end up not knowing what to do with him half the time and that kinda makes him boring to me. He's only fun because *I* made him fun, which can be nice but like. The Ace Attorney roster is filled with too many good characters for him to stand out at all. Dual Destinies made Clay an important fixture in Apollo's backstory, though, so fuck me I guess.

Finally, Klavier chapter!! I got to start off with Apollo just buying the concert tickets Klavier sent, which as you know is my favourite little detail. Klavier sending these tickets is such an unhinged move but Apollo then buying them without a second thought is just as unhinged, these two are dumbasses and perfect for one another. XD

IT'S ME I'M STILL MAD ABOUT THIS. Phoenix goddamn Wright you cannot make Apollo present two (two!!) pieces of forged evidence and then never apologise for it!!! And then Spirit of Justice rolls around with Dhurke's whole deal and!!! Makes everything worse!!!

I have a whole ten or so rants about how AJ's ending is made worse actually by SoJ's inclusion (because how could Apollo be "too new" to law when he grew up with a literal disgraced defence attorney?? How could he have nothing to say on the poisoned system when he's known Dhurke and Khura'in's whole deal for all his life??? I'm upsetti I am so upsetti about this) but I'll save that for another time >T

I just really like this bit. Absolutely added this scene it does not exist in canon, but. I like Apollo's last line. Maybe one day you won't be such a coward, Klavier. Maybe one day you'll stop running from the truth.

And agh. The whole conversation scene in the lobby is just. Catharsis but not. I ended up playing the comfortable-but-also-not mood the two got stuck in, Apollo reaching out and Klavier dodging his advances (like the coward he is lol) until Klavier finally does accept that offer. I just like their dynamic, two men touched by ruin and reacting to it in vastly different ways. Klavier runs until he sees someone else in need and Apollo reaches out against all of his better instincts. They're my faves <3

*screaming from the rooftops* IT'S ABOUT TRUST!! IT'S ABOUT TRUSTING SOMEONE WHOM YOU SHOULD ABSOLUTELY UNDER NORMAL CIRCUMSTANCES NEVER THINK ABOUT TRUSTING!!! BUT YOU TRUST THEM ANYWAY!! AND THEY TRUST YOU IN RETURN!!! agh

I like the whole scene of them talking outside the car (and fun fact, I have an actual location in mind for them to be at; it's near the Conejo Boulders, which isn't LA whoops but is a view ingrained into my mind), but particularly this bit (of course) --

YEAH KISS!! it's a parallel (or rhyme??) to the one Snufkin gave him in the first chapter!! It's Apollo internalizing that lesson and paying it forward!! Yeah.

The end bit is funny specifically to me. Like yeah Apollo just spent a whole day making out and talking with Klavier and only when Klavier is like, taking care of him (making breakfast) does Apollo go "oh. Shit. I might desire this man romantically." Like lol amazing my fave. XD

ANYWAY YEAH LEMON BOY. I LIKE IT. At some point I'll finish the two sequel stories I've got in the works....

Moomin rant part 2: Snufkin's tail

Hi again! So something I've seen a lot on here and on other apps is fanart of Snufkin with a tail. Personally, I LOVE IT! One, I think it's just cute. Like, look at this little guy with a little tail! And the artists who draw him with a tail always have such nice art styles (part of why I spend all of my free time looking at fanart is because you're all so freaking talented). I also think it connects him more with how I've seen Mumriks described as cat-like. I'm pretty sure it even says that on the Moomin Wiki page, but don't quote me. It also has a nice tie to All Small Beasts Should Have Bows In Their Tails (or they'll find themselves locked in Hemulen jails). The song is most closely associated with Snufkin and Little My, which SIBLINGS! But it could also be a tie to Joxter. Maybe it was a song that they learned before Joxter left/Snufkin was turned into Moses. Also sad side note, maybe if there is an invisible arc, Snufkin's tail is constantly invisible. It's sad, but also kind of funny because I imagine everyone being like "you have a tail?!" Anyway, thanks for reading my rant! These funky little Finnish creatures are the sole thing in my brain.

Couldn’t sleep cause of negative thoughts about my life so they somehow ended up turning into negative thoughts about the trial episode and oh my god I’m so mad HOW did it turn out so terribly. I know I’ve ranted a lot about it already so I’ll try not to repeat stuff I’ve said in the past but...

Even Sniff’s new hairdo baffles me. He’s complaining at the beginning about Moomintroll & Snufkin calling him a “little animal” so when he takes off the hat and we see the shadow, when I first saw it I thought he’d grown a moustache (since facial hair on men has typically been associated with maturity). But then he arrives at the trial sporting this Karen hair???? Which is so baffling cause you’d think the most fitting thing would be for him to now have a hairdo that resembles the curly white wigs lawyers (used to?) wear in court... but no... he has a younger-looking blonde bob... which somehow gives him confidence and maturity????? How does that make any sense? What were they thinking??? (And on top of the homophobia that was how the treated Thingumy & Bob’s story, you could argue that the comedy of Sniff wearing this wig - Little My literally laughs at him when she sees him - is the old “lol funny man dressed as woman” offensive joke... but maybe I’m just taking my anger too far now...)

Also, when the trial begins, initially no one steps forward to defend Thingumy and Bob. Eventually Moomintroll does, which he’s praised for and it’s supposed to be this “wow isn’t he so nice stepping up for the gays when no one else will uwu” but... he doesn’t do it for them. He does it so Mamma will be pleased with him. Idk that just never sat right with me. Especially since this is after the episode in which Moomintroll learnt to stop feeling jealous of Thingumy & Bob and was all “there’s enough cake for everyone”, you’d think maybe they’d continue to show that newfound friendliness between them by having him want to defend them for them buuut nope! He just wants Mamma to applaud him! Not a very nice trait for your main character to have imo.

And all the other problems I can think of I’ve already mentioned on here before so I’ll stop for now lol. It just turned out to be such a terrible terrible episode that’s offensive not only to the LGBT+ community, but to individual characters (Sniff, Hobgoblin, etc.) as well! Of course the concept art shows that there was definitely stuff they had to end up scrapping so I really do wonder just how much it changed during production and if it was ever decent...

rewatching tgm for the umpteenth time: wifi's not working edition 1/?

ngl Barkilphedro has No Rights and he gets No Sympathy from me but i do feel sorry for him when he talks about his mother. also sucks for him that he wasted so much time hoping his loyalty to Clarence would pay off, only to get nothing but mockery in return. also also as 'comical' as the Erotic Breakfast Dance scene is played it's still...really gross and Not Okay. This dude's 100% culpable for his actions and he made his own choices and is absolutely slimy but it's like those bits in LotR when they talk about Bilbo pitying Gollum. idk i just kinda hate that ol' Barky let himself be twisted into such a wretched creature. He crossed the No Rights line the night he decided to carve up a kid's face tho and just kept right on going.

okay so i've seen some comments around about Clarence's "How do you keep your pecker up" remark and just thought i'd- dude's fingernails. wow they're so shiny. ahem -mention here that i've looked into this expression before and it's actually a term that i guess is mainly used in England or something and it's like nose = beak = 'pecker' as in birds which ‘peck’ things with their beaks. It's basically the same as "keep your chin up". Snufkin says it to Moomin. I mean with Clarence i wouldn't put it past him to mean it another way but also given where the show is set it makes sense he would use such a term.

ngl i want to Know about Angelica tho like. why is she Brutalized. why did Clarence send her awaey. i actually want to know about the whole family. I feel like it's a three separate moms situation but even if it's only two separate moms Where Are The Moms. did Clarence send Them awaey too? Did one or more of them Die? Were they Killed? oh god what if it's like in Light Princess and he actually Had (one of/)Them Executed. I think it's interesting that Clarence Lorded Dirry-Moir. we don't get to know about how he treated Josiana, but none of his kids even turn up to his funeral and the only one who talks about him at all only does so to denounce him.

interesting how Ursus has little!Gwyn sing “they put blood in my nightmares” but also vow to find the man who cut him. which i mean singular ‘they’ is obviously a thing but as i doubt the intention was for Gwyn to have decided that whoever cut him must be a they/them man i just think it’s interesting that even the wording in the puppet show points to the fact that there was Someone Else There, even if it does then swerve back to a single perpetrator. But also it’s still accurate because while it was only one man who cut Gwyn’s face, it was both Barkilphedro and Ursus who contributed to putting blood in his nightmares.
