The Last of Sheila (1973)
When Clinton Greene arranges a petty little revenge game for his friends surrounding the death of his wife, he’s ready to twist the knife at any opportunity, drawing out an elaborate spider’s web in order to name and shame the killer. If only he hadn’t involved a bunch of Hollywood types. An amalgam of airheads and egotists, everyone is either terrible at the game or thinks too highly of themselves in that regard, especially when it comes to figuring out the petty meta-game Clinton has arranged in order to draw out the secrets of his guests. It’s a Hercule Poirot deposition meets the average round of One Night Werewolf where everyone is just a little too drunk to play a clever political game. Stephen Sondheim and Anthony Perkins take delight in penning these sequences with an acerbic wit, fitting as many double entendres and jabs as they can manage, even before the knives are out for real. The stakes aren’t too high, despite a couple of deaths involved, but karmic justice serves the killer. In Hollywood, there truly are fates worse than death.

The Last of Sheila (1973)
Swampflix readers, the internet has been essentially de-democratized. What I mean by that is that when you or I go online to look for the answer to a question or read one (1) article about a thing that we engaged with or enjoyed, we no longer get to interact with that article in a vacuum. Unless you’re VPN’d up every single time that you look for a movie review or try to purchase a replacement…
