Sci-Fi Horror Films for the Spooky Season
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Blob (1958)
Steve and Jane are two teenagers who encounter a creature from space that begins attacking and eating people from their town. Best scene: In the doctor's office where he's looking in a mirror and sees something moving under a sheet. Still freaks me out to this day. 100% recommend!
Tumblr media
The Thing (1982)
It's a classic for a reason. A group of men are trapped in an Antarctic research base with a shape-shifting alien. The practical effects and atmospheric paranoia make this one of my favorite movies. Best scene: The blood testing scene.
Tumblr media
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)
What the title says. There's a 50s version of this film which is good too, but the 70s one leans farther into the horror aspects of its premise. Donald Sutherland, Jeff Goldblum, Leonard Nimoy, what more could you ask for? Definitely one that'll be keeping you up at night. Best scene: The mud bath house.
Tumblr media
Alien (1979)
Just watch it, seriously. I don't need to explain this one, just trust me. Starts out slow, but is worth it. A must-see. End then once you finish it watch Aliens (1986). Best scene: Entire third act.
Tumblr media
Nope (2022)
A brother and sister investigate the strange happening on their horse farm. This movie blew me away and made me obsessed with Jordan Peele. Best scene: Too many to list. Watch it.
Tumblr media
Annihilation (2018)
A group of women enter a zone that has been cut off from the world, and inside the zone DNA does some weird things. The tension is crazy high in this movie and it really makes you think while you watch, trying to understand and put pieces together. Best scene: The one in the gif, I mean come on.
Tumblr media
The Fly (1986)
Body horror to the max when a scientist tests out his teleportation device and things go horribly awry. Not for those with a weak stomach, this film is straight up disgusting, but in the best way. Best scene: can't say without big spoilers.
Tumblr media
The Blob (1988)
That's right, another blob movie on here! You'll never guess the plot. Practical effects, creative deaths, and a distinct 80s feel that you just can't replicate. Best scene: at the hospital.
Tumblr media
Event Horizon (1997)
A space crew goes to investigate when a long-missing ship, the Event Horizon, shows back up after being missing for seven years. This movie did not do well upon its initial release, but found a cult following later and I'm a part of that cult, babyyy. Join us! Best scene: not really a scene, but any part where we see the recordings from the ship or they're mention because it freaks me out.
Tumblr media
Attack the Block (2011)
Neighbors must team up when killer aliens start to invade their building. This is just a really fun movie with immaculate vibes. John Boyega stars in this and he does such a great job as an unlikely hero. Best scene: When Moses makes a run for it.
Tumblr media
The Faculty (1998)
A school's staff are taken over by aliens intent on turning everyone in the school into one of them; a group of students fight back. This is one of my favorite comfort movies because the characters are great and the premise is tried but true. If you're having a movie night with friends or want to cuddle up with something spooky, this is your movie. Best scene: can't pick one tbh, it's all so good.
Tumblr media
Re-Animator (1985)
Imagine Victor Frankenstein but even shittier at his job? You'll have Herbert West. Goofy B-horror from the 80s is sometimes the height of the genre. Jeffrey Combs is in this movie which is reason enough on its own to watch. Best scene: The first reanimation scene in the morgue.

Jeff Combs Characters
Fanfic ideas I'm too lazy to write.
AU, modern day, Herbert West is a neurosurgeon and Crawford Tillinghast is a physicist. I want a sort of Big Bang Theory scenario where they're brothers/cousins/or just doppelgänger roommate's, but they dig the same woman. In mind, I have her kinda like Wednesday Addams but a bit more friendly, but not like Abby Sciuto, and still a genius in her field- which isn't medical at all. She's a punky-goth Suzie-homemaker lookin' baker/small shop owner. I thought wouldn't it be hilarious that after trying to best each other intellectually and show off, if they resorted to nerd fighting like Sheldon Cooper + Leonard Hofstadter? Then one of the following happens: A) She's already got a boyfriend. They're shocked it's Milton Dammers. B) They decide they're alright forming a thrupple. (If in this AU, Herbert + Crawford are bisexual.) C) She's married! To Commander Shran. D) They decide it makes sense to be brother-husbands. They're both married to their work and she to hers, so it makes sense that they would trade off whenever one of them has the time for a relationship.

Leslie Howard and Norma Shearer in Romeo and Juliet (George Cukor, 1936)
Cast: Norma Shearer, Leslie Howard, John Barrymore, Edna May Oliver, Basil Rathbone, C. Aubrey Smith, Andy Devine, Conway Tearle, Ralph Forbes, Henry Kolker. Screenplay: Talbot Jennings, based on a play by William Shakespeare. Cinematography: William H. Daniels. Art direction: Cedric Gibbons, Frederic Hope, Oliver Messel, Edwin B. Willis. Film editing: Margaret Booth. Music: Herbert Stothart.
If Shakespeare's Juliet could be played, as it was in its first performances, by a boy, then why shouldn't she be played by 34-year-old Norma Shearer? Truth be told, I don't find Shearer's performance that bad: She lightens her voice effectively and her girlish manner never gets too coy. It also helps that William H. Daniels photographs her through filters that soften the signs of aging: She looks maybe five years younger than her actual age, if not the 20 years younger that the play's Juliet is supposed to be. I'm more bothered by the balding 43-year-old Leslie Howard as her Romeo, though he had the theatrical training that makes the verse sound convincing in his delivery. And then there's the 54-year-old John Barrymore as Mercutio, who could be Romeo's fey uncle but not his contemporary. In fact, Barrymore's over-the-top performance almost makes this version of the play a must-see -- we miss him more than we do most Mercutios after his death. Edna May Oliver's turn as Juliet's Nurse is enjoyable, if a bit of a surprise: She usually played eccentric spinsters like Aunt Betsy Trotwood in David Copperfield (George Cukor, 1935) or sour dowagers like Lady Catherine de Bourgh in Pride and Prejudice (Robert Z. Leonard, 1940). In the play, the Nurse rarely speaks without risqué double-entendres, but most of them have been cut in Talbot Jennings's adaptation, thus avoiding the ridiculous spectacle of Shakespeare being subjected to the Production Code censors. (Somehow the studio managed to slip in Mercutio's line, "the bawdy hand of the dial is now upon the prick of noon.") Some of the other pleasures of the film are camp ones, such as Agnes deMille's choreography for the ball, along with the costume designs by Oliver Messel and Adrian, which evoke early 20th-century illustrators like Walter Crane or Maxfield Parrish. No, this Romeo and Juliet won't do, except as a representation of how Shakespeare's play was seen at a particular time and place: a Hollywood film studio in the heyday of the star system. In that respect, it's invaluable.

Martha J. "Tootsie" Davies
Tumblr media
Martha J. “Tootsie” Davies, 86, of Edwardsville, passed away on Sunday, October 27 surrounded by her loving family.
Tootsie was the daughter of the late William and Martha Johns Watkins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her late husband, Leonard A. Davies, two brothers, John T. and William D. Watkins, a sister, Shirley M. Shovlin, and a beloved son-in-law, Mark J. Herbert.
She was born in Edwardsville on June 25, 1938, and was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. Upon graduating from Edwardsville High School in 1956, she went on to marry her late husband and relocate to the Philadelphia area where they had their three children. She returned to the Wyoming Valley after her husband's passing in 1978 and has resided in Edwardsville ever since.
Following her return to the Wyoming Valley, most of Tootsie’s days were spent playing pitch, watching Jeopardy, or cheering for the Phillies with her companion of many years, the late Harry Harrison.
Tootsie spent her life as a devoted homemaker. Raising her three children and playing an active role in the lives of her grandchildren and great children was her number one priority. Her home was always filled with the sounds of her grandchildren playing.
Martha was extremely proud of her Welsh heritage. She was an avid, lifelong reader. As a young woman, she always dreamed of attending Princeton University to study journalism. When not reading she was most likely doing a crossword puzzle or watching the Game Show Network.
She was known for her quick wit, even in her final weeks. She loved rooting for the Philadelphia Eagles, who she notoriously referred to as the “iggles”. She loved country music and spending afternoons at The Grille with her best friend, Marsha Cragle.
Tootsie is survived by her three children, Wendy Davies-Thompson and husband Ross, Edwardsville, Leonard W. Davies, Sr., Edwardsville, and Elizabeth Rowlands and husband John, Plymouth. She is also survived by a sister, Elizabeth Roberts and husband John, and a brother James Watkins and wife, Carol. Above all else, Tootsie enjoyed being a grandmother and a great-grandmother. She cherished all the time spent with her grandchildren: Sarah Herbert-Hannick (Rich), Lennae Thompson-Pellam (Christopher), Laura Thompson, Ross L. Thompson, Jr., Ashley Yeager (Zachary), Leonard W. Davies, Jr. (Cayla), Jennifer Davies, Katiemae Goryl (David), Meghan Rowlands, and John R. Rowlands, Jr. (Kristen). Her great-grandchildren, Brody and Hudson Harrison Hannick, Theodore and Lucy Thompson-Pellam, Addisyn and Austin Davies, Spencer and Lincoln August, Kennedy and David Goryl and Piper Rowlands were the light of her life.
Family and friends are invited from 4 to 7 PM on Thursday, October 31st at the Hugh B. Hughes & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 1044 Wyoming Ave., Forty Fort.
Funeral Service will be held at 10 AM on Friday, November 1st at the Hugh B. Hughes & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, with Rev. James Quinn, officiating. Interment will be held at Memorial Shrine Cemetery, following the service.
Tootsie’s time here is marked by a great legacy in those she leaves behind, a true testament to a long and fulfilling life.

One photograph tells more of the story of the Packards than anything else. The photograph is courtesy of Find a Grave user Jack Vander-Schrier.
The photograph shows what the “Barnabas Packard family,” as Vander-Schrier puts it, around 1875, living in Cameron, Missouri. It has been numbered as to help future genealogists determine who the individuals are in this picture. Based on the photograph of Charles Edwin on page 70, it is clear that number 8 is him. He was a cashier at the Farmers Bank in Cameron, Missouri, and later a banker, reportedly. The rest of those in the photograph are unknowns. However, numbers 1 and 2, 3 and 4, 5 and 6, seem like couples based on the way they are standing. One of these couples is Roswell Clifford and Ellanora (1842-1895), while another is Patty and Charles Ford (1822-1914) (also a banker), and the last is Ossmus and Sophia H. Dean. Possibly Araminta Aminta Utter is number 16, although this cannot be confirmed. Somewhere in numbers 9-14, 17-21 are Araminta and Charles’s child Clark, but not Eva since she was born in 1876, unlike Clark who was born in 1873.
The same goes for Ossmus and Sophia’s child, Herbert Melvin (1867-1935). All of these children have the last name of Packard. Basing it on the photo, earlier in this chapter, number 7 is Ruth Snow. Number 16 may be the wife of the person occupying that house. Other women, such as Herbert’s wife, Mary Francis, are likely in the photograph as well. The same is undoubtedly the case for Roswell and Ellanora’s children: Emma E (b. 1870), George C (b. 1873), Leonard C (b. 1875), Etta B (b. 1877), E Edwin (b. 1880), and Jennie S (b. 1882), the first three of which were likely in the photo. It is also the case for Patty and Charles’s children named Pearl, Arthur, Sarah Jane (1844-1898), Henry Edsel (1847-1902), and Cora Ann (1855-1918) who married George Thomas Howser (1855-1936). If you add up all of the people noted in this paragraph, it adds up to 21. Solving the mystery of who is who in this old photograph would require identifying all these individuals rather than using educated guesses. Still, it adds more to the Packard family story.

"5 DAYS TO 90, FLEES GETS 2 YEARS IN 'PEN'," Toronto Star. May 14, 1943. Page 32. ---- Ralph W. J. Kimble Escaped From Reformatory at Guelph ----- "B" Police Court at City Hall, Magistate Browne.
On May 3, with only five days to serve before he would have been released from Guelph reformatory, Ralph W. J. Kimble escaped in a truck, the property of the Ontario Agricultural college, at which he was working, drove to Toronto where that night he stole a suit of clothes and a shirt from a house on Sherbourne St.
"You will go to the penitentiary for two years," said his worship this morning when Kimble pleaded guilty to charges of escaping custody, theft of the truck and the clothing.
Det.-Sergt. Hinchlewood testified accused was serving a sentence for car theft and was working with other prisoners at the Guelph Agricultural farm when accused took the truck and escaped. "The truck was left on Pembroke St. That night he stole a suit of clothes and a shirt from 184 Sherbourne St.," said Hinchlewood.
"Allowing for good conduct he had only five days to serve before. he would have been released." said G. Potter from the provincial secretary's office.
"Why did you do this?" asked the court. "It was just on impulse," replied Kimble.
A month in jail was given David Mossom who pleaded guilty to theft of two suits of clothes from Robert Reynolds. Complainant stated he had befriended accused, paying his room rent. "He stole one suit first and later on another," said Reynolds.
"They were recovered in pawn shops," said the crown.
"We are not prepared to go on today," said the crown when Leonard Giles was called on remand to answer a charge of shooting at Detective Sergeant Fred Munro.
Defence counsel stated accused elected to be tried by judge and jury. He was remanded to May 19.
STEALS AFTER DRINK --- A Police Court, City Hall, Magistrate Gullen. "If I had not been drinking, I would not have done it," said Herbert Burns, 52, pleading guilty of stealing socks, a shirt and purse. from a store.
"Accused was going around with a shopping bag. He had been drinking," related Detective Ritchie.
Burns was fined $20 or 20 days.
For failing to report for medical examination for military service before March 15, as required by the National Selective Service Regulations, Steve Butch pleaded guilty and was fined $25 and costs or 30 days. "If the fine is paid accused will be turned over to the authorities for medical examination, if not he will be examined after 30 days," said Magistrate Gullen.
"Since October, 1942, the mobilization branch have sent notices to accused requesting him to report for medical examination. They have all been returned. Yesterday accused was picked up by one of our officers," said Constable N. G. Canfield, R.C.M.P.
Robert Myers admitted stealing four cartons of cigarettes from his employer, and was fined $20 or 20 days.
FORGED $20 CHEQUE --- "C" Police Court, City Hall, Magistrate Prentice. Beatrice George pleaded guilty of forging a cheque for $20.
Det.-Sergt. Frank Wilson said accused had cashed an "allowance cheque" mailed to her landlady, Mrs. Connell Marritt. He said the signature was forged.
"I'm only 19," pleaded accused. "I come from Boston, Mass., and my mother is in the army. I want to make restitution."
She was remanded to May 17 for sentence.
A woman, charged with theft, collapsed and fell heavily from her chair during the hearing today. Charges of stealing a watch, lighter and three pairs of socks from Anton Rodek were dismissed.
"The watch was given to you by this woman as a Christmas gift, wasn't it?" Frank Callaghan, defending, asked complainant. "Yes, that's right."
"Didn't accused arrange to get you a divorce from your wife? Didn't she pay cheques to a lawyer?"
"She paid them."
"And didn't you get out of the air force by saying you had sinus trouble, which you didn't?"
"I went through the medical board."
At this point accused woman collapsed. She was assisted to her feet by court officials.
"I don't think they have caught up with you yet," the court said to Rodek.
"The night you left her, you took her car, didn't you?" asked Mr. Callaghan. "I did."
6 MONTHS' SENTENCE ---- County Police Court, County Buildings, Magistrate Keith. Six months was the sentence imposed on John Hudyma, convicted of receiving a stolen bicycle.
Accused, a second-hand dealer, bought the bicycle from two school boys for $7. It had been stolen from a schoolyard in York township.
"Stealing bicycles from messenger boys has become a racket," said Magistrate Keith, sentencing Donald Graham to two months for theft of a bicycle from George Painter, a messenger boy.
"There seems to be something to be said for this man. He has never beer to schcol in his life," said Magistrate Keith, in the case of Anthony Luciano, remanding him for sentence to May 21 on a charge. of purchasing two sets of used automobile tires, tubes and wheels without permission from the rubber controller.
A second charge of receiving these articles, knowing they had been stolen, was dismissed. Det.-Sergt. Wilfred McLellan testified he recovered two sets of auto tires, tubes and wheels from accused's home on May 5. "He admitted buying them from Frank Dunn and Robert Wheeler (who were convicted of stealing them and given suspended sentence and six months' probation in county' police court yesterday). Accused stated Dunn had told him he was wrecking his car and disposing of the tires and tubes. Luciano bought them for $25," said witness.
Accused said he was illiterate, and had never seen the inside of a school in his life. He said he was. a naturalized Canadian, but that he did not know it was against the law to buy used tires without permission.
"You knew there was a war on?" asked Mr. Mathews. "No. I am just a working man," accused replied.
"Didn't you know it was pretty hard to get tires nowadays?" queried Mr. Mathews.
"I don't know," answered accused.
