although i'm incredibly late to the hype surrounding helium and the last few chapters of heat waves, i had recently re-found and finished reading the remaining content. i'm completely obsessed with the style of writing dakota uses and how the plot all slowly comes together.

i'm mainly posting this just to share a playlist that i think suits h! D and h! G's story because i'm hyperfixated and i need to express it😭

i'm not a big book person because i feel a lot of books are incredibly stereotypical and often doesn't portray a realistic development to the characters in the story, but somehow a FREE fanfiction on the internet has displayed more raw emotion behind a slow, immersive, and descriptive piece of digial text. The use of literary devices to describe feelings, characters, the environment; it's all beautifully tied together and i truly think these two fics deserve all the support they get.

even though it's a shame helium was discontinued right after a plot twist, i wholeheartedly respect dakota's decision and i'm glad a lot of people are understanding towards their wishes, so let's keep it that way.

can…can we ask what the dnf ship is?

Popular RPF ship between two MCYTs. Both have since faced serious SA and grooming allegations with fans, which is why we do not endorse the ship anymore.

In the context of the asks that have been coming in here, a very popular (and extremely well-written) fanfiction arose from that ship called Heat Waves, which broke ao3 several times upon update and catapulted Glass Animals' song of the same name (that the fic was based off of) to virality. It was a pretty weird moment in fandom culture, Major news outlets were writing articles about it, the people involved in the fic openly admitted to having read it, it trended on twitter for multiple days. Heat Waves and its sequel Helium were subsequently taken down by the author due to their feeling that fandom boundaries had just been completely eroded. It's a little bit of a cautionary tale to those of us who indulge in RPF to keep it within very well-defined fandom spaces, and not let it near those whom it involves, nor those who could seek to exploit it.

Glass Animals is a fantastic band though and deserves a chance to throw off the Heat Waves curse. Go listen to their newest song Creatures in Heaven.

Like i respect it for what it was at the time but looking back on it the last half of the fic was horrible and insanely ooc and even before i actively watched either of them i knew they would never do that shit😭 and dont even get me started on helium

I have a particular hate for pre face reveal fics that make dream leave his house

I committed a sin again bc I couldnt find helium on ao3 (heatwaves is e so nope) but I learned that wattpad is literally a hivemind like half of the comments are literally just the same thing most of the time

especially in the unchained melody/ff1970 comments did you know they name the timeskips? the ff1970/heatwaves commenters are the only wattpad people I respect

This might be considered a random vent, I will do so too as I am writing this at 2 am and I have school tomorrow and there is a lot of things going on irl but what still hits me right at the heart is the songs heat waves and helium. the first time i started reading heat waves my mentality was in shambles– i was locked up in my room forever trying to make something out of myself, something my family would approve of. during all of those online classes and whatever shit i had to do dsmp popped into my life. i met all these content creators that told me to live and care about myself first, they told me that feeling bad was okay and during all this, i very randomly stumbled upon a lyrics video of heat waves, that was when i first found the fic under the comments. It was just a little fic i wanted to read to distract myself, then i read it once, twice, thrice–i read it all over on every new episode, till dream and george—no more like heat waves became all i could think about. it did a great job distracting me but when i listened the songs it started to hurt. i dont even know how i made it into such an obsession, i blame it on being a rope to hold onto when i was on the verge of falling. then i did the same thing to helium too, cuz i was obviously way too down already, it did not feel good when i first found out its discontinued, but its the authors choice and i respect what theyre comfortable in.

And after all that rolling down and getting delusional in the fictional dnf shit, they meet up. dream face reveals and the entire fandom shakes all over, everything becomes real all over again.

Looking back at my falling self holding onto a mere fic and now seeing them actually really holding onto each other and always being there for each other, it truly blessed me enough to write such a thing publicly, i really can see them being happy with each other and its so, so amazing to see their development over the years.

Now im just getting emotional heh.

ok i wanna talk abt the author of heatwaves as a dreamland freak i think they generally left pretty peacefully but had some rumor spread abt them that they thought dream was ugly? 😭

which i then think turned into "thats why they deleted heatwaves and helium" but im like 99% sure they deleted them pre-face reveal & pre-drexit, it was also very very clear that they were losing interest/getting burnt out because of how infrequent the chapter updates were, also that they deleted all of their dnf related bookmarks

i think they intended to finish it though as after they released chapter 14 they said that there would officially be 17 chapters, but it stayed at 14/17 until it got deleted. it may have felt like an obligation or something considering it was the biggest dnf fanfiction series of all time

also side note im like pretty sure helium was gonna have a smut scene😭 it had the tag "angst & fluff & smut" and dakota had also released a smut fic that them and their friends implied was "them getting over their fear of the word cock" which makes me think it was like. practice 💀 anyways sad we didnt get to witness that sry for the yap fest that was just a little tidbit

idk where im going with this i was violently hyperfixated on the dreamland series i think u can tell. anyways getting back on track they left pretty peacefully 💀
