Heinz Graffunder (1926-94) is probably best known for being the chief architect of the now demolished Palast der Republik in (East-) Berlin. What is lesser known is that in the 1950s and 1960, and again in the 1980s, he was responsible for numerous zoos and animal parks in the GDR, among them the Tierpark Berlin and the zoos in Rostock and Magdeburg. Especially the Berlin Tierpark was a highly ambitious and complex task that Graffunder, then in his late twenties, had to face together with his young collective: for an areal of 160 hectares the collective had to design the landscaping, the routes, the urban plan and of course all compounds and infrastructural buildings. Together with the designated zoo director Graffunder against the foil of changing paradigms in zoo architecture developed less naturalistic and more abstract, colorful compounds/buildings. Decorated with mosaics, tiles and individual color schemes the filigree designs were state of the art and marked a decided departure from former Stalinist grandeur.
With Natascha Meuser the leading German expert on zoo architecture has taken to the Graffunder archives at Akademie der Künste Berlin in order to unearth the architect’s pioneering zoo designs, a research project that led to the present monograph: „Heinz Graffunder - Bauten und Projekte für Zoologische Gärten“, recently published by Dom Publishers. Besides a general introduction to Graffunder’s work in the context of the GDR Meuser focuses on nine zoo and animal garden projects which she supplements with extensive photographic and plan material from the archive. Together with her very insightful texts the reader receives a thorough overview of the projects and in particular Graffunder’s thoughts about each project. The latter are deepened by a selection of his texts, reflections and the memories of long-term collaborator Heinz Tellbach.
Natascha Meuser’s book proves that both the history and the present of zoo architecture, especially in view of changing paradigms and animal welfare, is a very relevant research topic that deserves much more attention.
