i thought i had talked about hedon on this blog but i guess not. this is my second go-around through the first episode.

more than anything, i'm super impressed by the fact that outside of the music and the engine (gzdoom), the dev made the whole game themselves: textures, sprites, maps, the story, the whole shebang. this is one of those projects where you can tell the person behind it has had brainworms about it for probably a decade and this is their way of getting it out into the world.

gameplay is doom/hexen with a more narrative-focused level design. there's magic and stuff but zan doesn't know how to do magic so she just smashes stuff with her axe. the weapons feel good and sound good. i wish the basic spike gun was a bit better but it's the doom pistol slot weapon so it's fine if it's not the most powerful thing. you can also throw your axe, but it doesn't come back so you have to run and grab it afterwards, which made me wish you could hold more than one. later in the game you can finally hold three at once with a secret ammo pouch upgrade, but by that point you don't want to be tossing axes as much since the difficulty of encounters goes up.

it's interesting comparing this to selaco, which is also a gzdoom shooter, albeit selaco heavily modifies the engine more so than hedon does. both games i feel are going for similar gameplay loops, with high highs of action and slower exploration to break up the pacing. something about the way selaco does it however... doesn't necessarily rub me the wrong way, but it felt like i was spending much more time waltzing around not fighting and looking for secrets than i was in hedon. i got much more into hedon's world and story than selaco, though that's not necessarily fair since selaco doesn't have all of its narrative and voice acting in the game yet. once selaco is wholly done i'll give it another shake and see how i feel.

all i'm saying is, hedon's got goblin fertility statues. does your game have goblin fertility statues? it ought to.
