Things Biden and the Democrats did, this week #15
April 19-26 2024
President Biden appeared along side Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senators Ed Markey and Bernie Sanders to announce major climate action. Biden announced a program, Solar For All, 7 billion dollars aimed at supporting low income house holds install solar power in their homes. The program will support 900,000 households across the country getting solar. Lower the average energy bill for a family by $400 a month and avoid more than 30 million metric tons of carbon pollution over the next 25 years. The boost in solar installation will help create 200,000 new jobs across the country. The President also announced the launch of the Climate Conservation Crops. modeled on FDR's Civilian Civilian Conservation Corps and JFK's Peace Corps, Biden's Climate Conservation Crops will be a program where young people can connect with climate projects across the country and be paid to help protect the planet. The Corps will be 20,000 strong, with 2,000 openings listed right now on their webpage across 36 states DC and Puerto Rico.
The Department of Labor finalized a new rule on overtime. Currently employers are only required to pay overtime to workers making under $35,568. Under the new ruling that will be raised to workers making $43,888, and in January 2025 raised again to workers making $58,656 and under. This will bring overtime pay to 4 million more workers and transfer $1.5 billion from the pockets of companies to workers. It also fixes to raise the level with inflation every 3 years starting in 2027.
The EPA announced a $1 billion dollar program to help replace heavily duty vehicles with clean energy versions. There are currently 3 million class 6 and 7 vehicles, school buses, box trucks dump trucks, street sweepers, delivery trucks, bucket trucks, and utility trucks, in use. 70% of the funds will go to replacing School Buses with Clean energy buses and the remaining 30% will go to replacing Vocational Vehicles like dump trucks and street sweepers. Heavy Duty vehicles on top of green house cases release harmful nitrogen oxide and fine particulate matter and replacing them will not only combat climate change but improve public health.
The Department of Interior took actions to protect 13 million acres of Alaska wild land is protected and to secure the livelihood of Alaska Native peoples who rely on this land. The Administration refused oil and mining rights on the vast areas of Alaska land as well as a 210 miles road through the northern wildernesses. This area represents valuable habitat for caribou and endangered polar bears, as well as millions of migrating birds.
The Department of Transportation announced finalized rules requiring airlines to give automatic cash refunds for canceled flights and other inconvenience. The refunds will be automatic meaning passengers will not have apply for them, prompt the airlines are required to refund a credit card purchase in 7 days, and require repayment in full and in kind, airlines can not substitute travel vouchers for cash. The DOT also announced new rules to protect airline travelers from junk fees, airlines and ticket agents must now clearly tell travelers upfront about all fees so no one is surprised by a hidden fee.
The EPA announced finalized rules on emissions standards for fuel burning power plants. The new rules include a tightening of Mercury and Air Toxics Standards, requiring a 70% reduction in mercury. It also had rules protecting ground water, new rules will require coal powered plants to remove 660 million pounds per year of pollutants discharged through wastewater, and for the first time federally regulates the dumping of coal ash, requiring safe dump sites that will not leak into ground water. Finalized rules require coal fired and new natural gas-fired power plants to capture up to 90% of their carbon pollution
Security of Transportation Pete Buttigieg attended the ground breaking of a new high speed rail project to connect Los Angeles and Las Vegas. The Biden Administration announced 3 billion to support the project 5 months ago. At 218 of all electric green rail the project promises to be the fastest way to get from LA to Las Vegas. Planned to open in 2028 just in time for the LA Olympics it is the first of many planned high speed rail projects. The Biden Administration has promised $66 billion for high speed rail and the largest single investment in Amtrak ever.
The FCC announced a new rule restoring Net Neutrality. Net Neutrality requires internet service pervaders to treat all websites equally and not slow certain ones now or speed others. In 2015 under Obama the FCC passed a rule requiring Net Neutrality. However in 2017, the FCC spread headed by Trump appointed Chair Ajit Pai repealed the rules. A patchwork of Democratic controlled states, lead by California passed state level laws requiring Net Neutrality forcing ISPs to de facto keep it in place. Late last year President Biden got the opportunity to replace Pai on the FCC, giving the FCC a 3 to 2 Democratic majority which voted this week to return to the Obama era rules and protect Net Neutrality nationwide.
The FTC passed finalized regulations to ban noncompete agreements in nearly all cases. These agreements, which cover 18% of American workers, about 30 million people, prohibit workers from joining or creating competing companies for a certain period of time. The FTC estimates that workers will earn an average of $524 dollars a year more and up to 8,500 new businesses will be created each year. The new rule will still allow noncompete for senior executives who make up less than 1% of the work force. Like with the FCC, two out of the 3 FTC commissioners who voted for the new rules are Biden appointees.
The Departments of Health and Human Services and Interior have announced a joint, $1 billion project to connect tribal communities to safe drinking water. Roughly half of Tribal households lack access to clean drinking water or adequate sanitation.
At the White House The Biden Administration announced plans to protect, restore and reconnect 8 million acres of wetlands and 100,000 miles of rivers and streams. This effort will include state, local and tribal government as well as private efforts along with the federal government to protect and restore the nations freshwater environments.
The Department of Health and Human Services announced a new rule boosting privacy protection for abortions. Republicans in states like Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma and Idaho have tried to make it a crime to leave the state to seek an abortion in a state where it is legal. The new federal rule would make it illegal for health information to be shared in these cases
Vice-President Harris announced a new rule requiring staffing standards at Nursing Homes across the country. The new rules will require registered nurses on duty 24 hours, seven days a week. This represents the first time the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services have required specific numbers of nurses and aides in Nursing Homes that get Medicare and Medicaid funding.
The Biden Administration Announced a $6 billion deal with tech giant Micron to bring high tech manufacturing to New York. The deal is expected to see Micron invest $100 billion in Syracuse New York area as well as build a factory in Boise, Idaho. The deal will create 70,000 new jobs. It is part of the Biden Administration's effort to bring high tech chip manufacturing to America.
The Department of Education finalized the most comprehensive federal protections for Trans and other Queer students in the nation's history. The rules also overturn Trump era rules on how colleges should handle sexual assault and harassment.

We’re just a few days into 2025, and already there are countless questions surrounding the two attacks involving vehicles that were carried out by U.S. Military veterans on January 1.
The suspect in the first attack, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, was reported to have mounted an Islamic State flag upside down in the back of his truck when he crashed it into a crowd of people in New Orleans, killing 14 people and injuring 35. According to the NY Post and its eyebrow-raising tour of Jabbar’s home, he had left the perfect crime scene, complete with a “bomb-making station” and everything.
The suspect in the second attack, Matthew Livelsberger, was an active-duty U.S. Army Green Beret, who was described by his family as a major Trump supporter. So, it was all the more puzzling when he rented a Tesla Cybertruck, drove it across the country, and then, according to reports, shot himself in the head, seconds before the truck exploded outside the Trump hotel in Las Vegas.

Honey Harvest 2024
I've had this in my drafts since July 2024 lol, I don't know how I forgot about it.
This is me and one of the other beekeepers gathering honey supers for honey harvest from a small yard. I took a very brief video of myself using a shaker box set up to knock the bees out of the super before staking it in the truck for transport. The shaker box has a grate on the top with slots large enough for workers to fall through, but not the queen or drones, so that if we are using the shaker boxes to collect bees to make packages or splits, we don't accidentally take the colony's queen.
We load up the honey full supers in the trucks, and replace them with empty supers for the bees to fill up again.
You can see the bees flying around pretty calmly, even after being smacked on the shaker box, and you can see part of my coworker and that she's in shorts and a veil while I'm in a full suit. It's just personal preference. She always brings her suit with her when she goes to yards, in case she needs to suit up, but I just go ahead and wear mine if I'm doing some heavy duty work with more than 4 colonies. I remember on this day we harvested from two yards and it was a generally hot day, and though the first yard, featured in the video, was tame, by the time we got to the second yard late in the day, they were far less calm about it. She had to dodge into her truck and put her suit on, and caught quite a few stings up the shorts 😨
Honestly, I'm not looking forward to the stress and chaos of bee season in early spring, but I'm looking forward to working the bees again. 🐝
Btw, that box I'm tapping probably weighed around 60lbs, pure honey!

China’s EV Boom Is Starting to Pinch Oil Producers. (Wall Street Journal)
Excerpt from this Wall Street Journal story:
China’s oil demand is nearing a turning point as electric vehicles take a growing share of its vehicle market, the world’s largest.
The country has long been the thirstiest consumer of crude. China accounted for 16% of global demand in 2023, or 16.4 million barrels a day, up from around 9% in 2008. More significantly, China was the largest buyer of marginal barrels. During that span, it contributed to more than half the growth in global oil demand. Since a record consumption year in 2023, after the country emerged from strict zero-Covid policies, demand has slowed. Oil consumption is projected to rise a mere 0.8% year on year in 2024 and by an additional 1.3% in 2025, according to the International Energy Agency.
While China’s overall oil demand still appears stable, its composition is shifting gears rapidly. Gasoline and diesel demand seems to have peaked: China’s total demand for these transportation fuels in 2024 will be 3.6% lower than in 2021, according to IEA estimates.
China’s housing bust is partly to blame, as a slowdown in construction led to weaker demand for diesel used in machinery. But a bigger story comes from China’s rapid shift in personal transportation, and especially the rise of electric vehicles. More than half of the passenger cars sold in the country in recent months were new-energy vehicles, which includes plug-in hybrids, according to the China Passenger Car Association. Largely because of that trend, China’s gasoline demand in 2025 is expected to be 6.4% lower than the peak in 2021, according to IEA projections.
More new heavy-duty trucks in the country are also using liquefied natural gas instead of diesel. Diesel and gasoline accounted for 44% of China’s oil demand in 2024, down from 51% in 2018.
While transportation fuels are running out of road, China’s growing petrochemical sector has been gobbling up oil products. Consumption of naphtha, ethane and liquefied petroleum gas, all feedstocks for petrochemicals, has risen 59% between 2019 and 2024. But this boom may no longer be enough to compensate for the continued decline in diesel and gasoline demand as electric vehicles keep gaining ground in China.

11 June 2024: King Abdullah II stressed that Gazans are facing death and devastation that have far surpassed any conflict in over twenty years, stressing that humanitarian access cannot wait for a ceasefire and cannot be subject to the political agendas of any party.
“The people of Gaza are not looking to us for platitudes and speeches. They want action. And they need that now,” His Majesty said at the plenary session of the “Call for Action: Urgent Humanitarian Response for Gaza” conference, attended by Crown Prince Hussein.
The King continued that, “the international humanitarian response in Gaza has been severely lacking, with the delivery of aid facing obstacles at every level.”
Following is the full text of His Majesty’s remarks:
“In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful
President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi,
Mr. Secretary-General,
President Mahmoud Abbas,
Your Royal Highnesses and Excellencies,
My friends,
Let me start by thanking Their Excellencies President Abdel Fatah Al Sisi and Secretary-General Guterres for co-hosting this vital conference with Jordan.
We stand today at a critical juncture in human history. Our collective consciousness is being tested by the unfolding catastrophe in Gaza. Our very humanity is on the line.
For eight relentless months, the people of Gaza have been suffering from death and devastation that have far surpassed any conflict in over twenty years. The spectre of famine looms large. Trauma is ever-present, the effects of which will remain for generations. And every corner of Gaza is marred by ruin.
The onset of the Rafah military operation has worsened an already dire situation. Nearly one million Gazans have been again forcibly displaced, and deprived of access to food, water, shelter, and medicine. Even those displaced time and again seeking safety are targeted. No place is safe.
My Friends,
The international humanitarian response in Gaza has been severely lacking, with the delivery of aid facing obstacles at every level. Humanitarian access cannot wait for a ceasefire and cannot be subject to the political agendas of any party.
The people of Gaza are not looking to us for platitudes and speeches. They want action. And they need that now.
As we gather here today with so much at stake, our immediate focus must go to four paramount issues.
First, there is a need for a robust mechanism for coordination that engages all parties on the ground. Effective and comprehensive de-confliction between the actors on the ground is key to ensure aid agencies can act, organise, and perform their duties safely, sufficiently and sustainably.
Second, the land corridor is the most effective method for aid to flow into Gaza. International resources are critically needed to undertake this urgent endeavour. We must be ready now to deploy a sufficient number of trucks to deliver aid on a daily basis. Hundreds of trucks are needed within Gaza. And many more are needed to effectively operate a sustained flow of assistance through the land routes to Gaza. We cannot wait months to mobilise these resources for action. What we have today is simply far from what we need.
Nevertheless, Jordan will continue sending assistance, along with international organisations and donors, by land, despite the impediments. It will also continue its airdrop operations, and will consider opportunities to use heavy-lift helicopters to deliver aid, for the short term, and once there is a ceasefire.
Third, the quantity and quality of aid to Gaza is key and is equally important. Medicine, water, and shelter material should be delivered sufficiently and freely.
We must ensure there are adequate stockpiles to deploy aid without delay, as soon as we can ramp up the relief operations.
Finally, I want to draw everyone’s attention to the dire economic, political and security situation in the West Bank, where hundreds of children have been killed and injured, while settler attacks, settlement expansion, economic sanctions, restrictions to movement of people, and violations of Muslim and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, are at their worst.
Jordan has already started sending assistance to the West Bank months ago to support the Palestinian population in these dire conditions. We have provided over $25 million of food and medical aid since October 7th to the West Bank. And a Jordanian army field hospital is operating in Nablus. This is in addition to almost $75 million in direct Jordanian assistance to Gaza since the war began, where we also operate two medical field hospitals in the north and the south.
And here again, we must warn that without the action of everyone present today, West Bank tensions could escalate into a larger conflict that will leave a far more devastating impact on the region.
My Friends,
We cannot abandon Gaza. It should be everyone’s priority. History will judge us by our actions. It is a test of our humanity and sincerity.
Thank you.”
The Jordanian delegation at the high-level conference included His Royal Highness Prince Rashid bin El Hassan, chairman of the board of trustees of the Jordan Hashemite Charity Organisation, Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, Director of the Office of His Majesty Jafar Hassan, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Maj. Gen. Yousef Hneiti, and General Intelligence Department Director Maj. Gen. Ahmad Husni.
The conference is co-organised by Jordan, Egypt, and the United Nations, at the invitation of His Majesty, Egypt President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi, and UN Secretary General António Guterres.
The conference, held at the level of heads of state and government, as well as heads of organisations at the King Hussein bin Talal Convention Centre, sought to identify means to bolster the international community’s humanitarian response in Gaza.
It is also aims at identifying the steps needed to ensure an active response in Gaza, as well as outlining operational and logistical needs, and committing to a unified humanitarian response.

Is California’s push to phase out diesel Recreational Vehicles yet another control tactic masquerading as climate policy? Conveniently, as with so many other policies, it's both.
Nov 26, 2024
End-of-year ‘blowouts’, Black Friday sales, ‘last year’s models,’ and all manner of rebates and promotions exist to lure prospective road warriors into the showrooms of RV dealers. However, if you've been considering a new diesel motorhome as a hedge against society’s imminent collapse, you might be in for an unwelcome surprise — particularly if you live in California, Oregon, Washington, New York, Massachusetts, or Maryland.
New regulations, set to take effect in 2025, will effectively bar the sales of new diesel motorhomes as part of the push to phase out gas and diesel engines in favor of electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles.
As Citizen Watch Report recently noted:
California’s Advanced Clean Truck (ACT) regulations require manufacturers of medium and heavy-duty vehicles, including RVs, to achieve 35% sales of zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs). The problem? A ZEV-compatible RV chassis doesn’t yet exist. This rule forces dealerships to comply or risk losing the ability to sell motorhomes entirely.
