'Purlie Victorious,' a Riotous Look in the Backward Mirror of 1960s Southern Racism
'Purlie Victorious,' starring Leslie Odom, Jr.. is a must-see rollicking comedy with a serious message.
Leslie Odom, Jr. in Purlie Victorious (Marc J. Franklin) White power structures die hard. However, they do fall apart when the younger generation helps to topple them. This is particularly true in Purlie Victorious, a Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch currently in revival on Broadway at The Music Box. It is the next generation that overwhelms the cement-like apparatus of noxious

You already know.
Yes, child, run for your breakable human friend, or the delicate hero... See what they make of Missy then. See how long they'll last around her like this. See how long anyone can tolerate such a monster.
Why do I keep these humans around?

Rewatching The Doctor Falls because Twelfth versus Simm!Master and Missy, and Cyber!Bill and Nardole and Alit... This episode is magnificent.
Also the more I think about it, the more I'm convinced that the Master's regeneration timeline goes Simm then Dhawan and then Missy. And the one trapped in the Toymaker's golden tooth is either Missy or the one just after her. The Toymaker found Missy dying on the floor of that ship while spying on the Doctor and trapped her. It would explain why Dhawan!Master is so unhinged and feral, having gone through Simm!Master, and why Missy is so hell bent on redeeming herself and helping the Doctor, having gone through all the discoveries of the Timeless Child and seen the Doctor's pain and loneliness, and she herself having gone through that pain and sadness. It's how Missy says "it's time to stand with the Doctor" and Simm answers "no! Never!" - that's what Dhawan fights against his whole time - hating and loving the Doctor, ruining her but also detroying her... Missy knew where it was going, she just knew it would take some work.
Underrated friendship of the whole show: Bill and Nardole. "Bill's back", the sheer relief and joy in Nardole's voice when he says that... And then the pure HEARTBREAK on his face when Hazran shoots at Cyber!Bill and Bill says "I understand". It's just. They're pals your Honor.
One-episode only character that deserved much more screen time: Alit.
"Don't be sorry. You were being kind. Nothing wrong with being kind." - I tend to say that Eleventh is my Doctor but really it's Eleventh AND Twelfth. I adore Twelfth.
Bill Potts is the Best, pass it on. Also, Pearl's acting, can we talk about Pearl's acting? The way she moves like a Cyberman, even when she still perceives herself as a human? Robotic movements, rigid spine... I adore Bill Potts.
Eleventh and the Ponds đŸ€đŸŒ Twelfth and Nardole and Bill > making me feel all the emotions and cry real tears and giving me ideas and thoughts. "Which one of is is stronger, Nardole?" - it's the way the Doctor, for all that he dismissed Nardole all series, actually respects and has a lot of consideration and affection for him. Shut up I'm crying, shut uuuuup. "I never will be able to find the words" - *curls up and sobs*
The Cybermen are so much more terrifying than the Daleks...
And then one of the best speech of the whole show. I've quoted it so many times already, but once more because it's seriously perfect:
"Winning? Is that what you think it's about? I'm not trying to win. I'm not doing this because I want to beat someone, or because I hate someone, or because I want to blame someone. It's not because it's fun and God knows it's not because it's easy! It's not even because it works, because it hardly ever does. I do what I do because it's right! Because it's decent. And above all, it's kind. It's just that. Just kind."
I swear, I heard that speech the first time and immediately incorporated it into my morals and values. Just be kind. Do the right thing, even when it hurts. Even when it's hard. Even if it's not going to work. Be kind and do the right thing. That's it. That's everything. "Always try to be nice, but never fail to be kind."
"Without hope. Without witness. Without reward. Pity. No stars. I'd hoped there'd be stars."
"Where there's tears, there's hope."
"I've been through a lot since the last time we met. So I'll show you around." - Bill and Heather. Love them.
"I never want to change again! Never again! I can't keep on being somebody else. Wherever it is, I'm staying. No! I will not change." contrasted with Eleventh's "We all change, when you think about it. And that's good, as long as we remember all the people we used to be."

the short answer is no the long answer is that there are a few possiblilties for how twelvespy would fit into the existing canon. the first is that twelve & the spymaster meet before twelve has experienced the events of world enough & time / the doctor falls, and the art in question that i just reblogged 18979187398 times shows him with his s9 hair, which does work timeline wise, if it was s10 i dont think he'd be able to cope both essesntially living with missy (OH MY GOD. HE IS PRETTY MUCH LIVING WITH MISSY IN S10. BWEEEUHHH..) and also being around the spymaster in any capacity, but yknow its that A Problem Happens in Space show so there could be but NAYWAYS, in that scenario missy has died on the colony ship, killed by simm!master, had her moment as the lumiat, been killed by missy iirc (if we're including audio continuity), and then regenerated into the spymaster, who is so so determined to never be anything like missy, never fall that far, to never (in his view) scrape the ground in front of the doctor, let alone admit he had any measure of attraction to them. spymaster burns down gallifrey because the timelords lied to him & also because he was so mad the doctor really was as fucking special a they always acted like they were. So. bearing this is mind.
would spymaster risk the timeline by telling twelve, if not that he probably dies on that colony ship too, that missy died there, killed by her past self, just as & becuase she was about to go stand with the doctor and probably try to save him - something thatspymaster would find embarrassing at best & disgusting at worst, BUT there's also like. A Lot to unpack there. esp if spy & twelve end up getting along fine (i think they'd complement each other's quietly and then explosivley deranged and angry sides, like thats a dynamic i want to see) - how do they ever discuss that. esp if twelve is with missy & if spymaster has met thirteen already then They Both Know that each other died during the events of the end of s10. how do you possibly talk about. that.
another option is that twelve bumped into the spymaster during one of the times he was disguised & stranded on earth but that doesnt quuiiiitteee work well for longer interactions cos then the doctor knows where he is & how hes disguised sooooo
BUT. the other option and the way funner (read : more messed up) option Is That. missy still dies on the colony ship in The Doctor Falls, from simmmaster shooting her, but that she somehow manages to regenerate, find the doctor again - maybe even save him??? from dying there?? maybe even before she fully regenerates you know? simmaster says 'dont bother trying to regenerate, you got the full blast' so if she thinks that she;s Dying For Real she might try to find the doctor before then. but she dies there and the doctor doesnt. bill & heather can still have their exit, just with less of the 'i cant leave the doctor' stuff. SO twelve Knows that missy dies (can probably infer some details that spy isnt willing to tell him), and now has spymaster with him who is far angrier (some of that directed at the doctor) - he didnt die alone as much but he still has tgat resentment there that make him into who he is, in such stark contrast to missy. the way simmaster reacts to her, the way spymaster decides conciously to never ever be like her ever again, BUT with twelve still there who Knows that missy was trying to be god, that she does have good in her heart like he always thought - OOH and spymaster could have this as some of the resentment towards twelve as well, that he Knows how close missy came to actually being good. and even though hes Not Like That Now he can still feel it insided of him and twelve is still there with his stupid sad eyes and its not like either of them could just say 'ok uhmmm see you round i guess' after that but its not like he was going to lock spymaster in the vault again ESPECIALLY if he saved twelve life even a little bit sdo thered be Tension and like what are they gonna do stay in the tardis???? together?????
ahah. uhm anyways

genuinely world enough and time/the doctor falls was a story about queerness and conversion therapy, i think
lesbian (shown to be not out to her family) goes through cyber conversion and everyone sees her as this monster but she is quite literally saved by a gay kiss
multi-master episode with two consecutive incarnations, the latter being the first female incarnation in the shows history, where explicitly the one who has "transitioned" is shown to be the good one who eventually does the right thing. (i don't think this was intentionally about being trans necessarily, but it certainly is depicting the master as a character as gender non-conforming, especially with simm!master putting on eyeliner at one point.)
like bill's part of the doctor falls is about conversion therapy. turning her into a cyberman = removing her emotions, which is then shown pretty explicitly to not have totally worked because she still produces a tear, which was even given to her by heather. cyber conversion = gay conversion therapy, and this episode is basically saying that conversion therapy doesn't work because of this exchange:
Tumblr media
bill is no longer a cyberman, because heather as the pilot has given her a second chance at life. and yes, bill still isn't human, but heather also says she can make her human again. so rather than being trapped in one mode of expression as the cyber conversion process had intended, bill can now do whatever she wants.
the two masters thing is important, but would be even more so if the doctor's regeneration from 12 to 13 had been a part of this episode, as had been originally intended. it's pretty obviously showing that simm!master is stuck in the past, and in fact literally is the incarnation directly before missy, who forces him to regenerate into her because it's time to do the right thing. again i think this is less about queerness (though there is some element of that in there) and more moffat writing about the fans ahead of the first female doctor. it's his commentary on how he knew people were going to react, with simm!master being a depiction of angry male fans who think the doctor shouldn't be a woman.
it also strikes me as deliberate along with this that bill is a lesbian specifically, and not say a gay man or something. if bill was a gay man that aspect of this story wouldn't work nearly as well because of what it's trying to say about specifically women. putting bill, a lesbian, through conversion therapy = forcing her to be in relationships with men that don't work and don't allow her to grow and be happy. in this way, she's a metaphor for doctor who as a show: forcing the doctor (or the master) to continue to be exclusively played by male actors would be a poor choice because the show is forced to stagnate, and can't grow and change the way it needs to in this century. moffat is saying here that it doesn't work to stay set in our ways.
even bill's last words to the doctor are an expression of her queerness:

The Tumblr Jerk Tournament Bracket...
...has dropped. I put all my love towards these assholes into it.
Tumblr media
Seeded according to uhhhhh "my brain thinks these sources allign in same genre or medium, and if not, then it's because I think the characters have similar themes in some way in my brain". Contestants all chosen by YOU (+ Palpalymo, for diversity /j).
Polls: TBA. Once I finish making them all and draft them, I'll make an announcement.
There's no right or wrong criteria for who to vote here because trying to establish that via Tumblrpoll is useless. You can vote for someone because they're your favorite, because their propaganda swayed you, because they look cool, or because they're the meanest. Just think: Do You Want Them To Emerge Victorious? Or are they such an ass you'd delight in seeing them get swept?
I highly encourage taking the time to read some propaganda. These guys have lots of love behind them.
And last but not least, be nice to other people on the internet. These polls may be for asshole characters, but that gives you no right to be an asshole back. Anything attacking the fans or fandom of a character will get taken out via my sniper team.
Thanks for your patience and let the whooping begin.
